"What, like... you put it in an ice box or something before you use it?" Jake asked, feeling his burin properly. He couldn't remember if it was particularly cold earlier, but his hands had definitely warmed it up. Yet... it was still working. "What does 'Cold Chisel' mean?"

Rarrr.

Hmmm... the fact that Truebridge used his wand made Jake a leeeeeeeeettle wary. He liked the idea that they'd been done manually... it kind of enhanced the magic in a way. Ah well... maybe he'd try and carve some in his dormitory. Heh.

Taking note of what Truebs said (even though he recalled the bit about the grain anyway from their meeting in Diagon Alley), Jake took his burin and ran his fingertips over the table. Hmmm... the place up the right hand side near the edge was good enough for him.

Standing up and kneeling on his chair, Jake poked his tongue out of the corner of his mouth and frowned in concentration as he begain painstakingly carving his rune and chanting the galdr thingy.

When he had a messy-ISH looking bow-tie kind of shape on his table, Jake smiled proudly. He had no lines going WITH the grain of the wood, so it hadn't been too tricky. As he sat back taking a little break, Jake raised his hand.

"Can we carved them underneath the table, like on the underside, or on the legs or something?"

He had his reasons.

Luin smiled at the teacher and looked at her carving. She decided to try once more just to get the technique down a little better.

Luin had finished her final practice carving and felt like she was ready finally. She thought about which method she would like to do and decided on the burin to do it. She looked at her desk and looked down at the desk, making sure she was lined up to go against the grain. She then started to carve her rune into the desk,

After awhile she had her rune carved into the desk perfectly she blew on it to get rid of any excess wood around it.

As the wood levitated to Draven who grabbed it and began to practice some more with the incantations and carving. He was really enjoying this as it was his first time actually practicing magic and especially in a field that he most interested in.

"Thurisaz, Thurisaz, Thurisaz" he said again.

Finally, after a few more times he felt confident in his ability to perform with the technique. He raised his hand as he signaled to professor Truebridge to come and inspect his work. He was very glad that the professor had taught them how to do it with both the wand and carving tools. He knew his parents would be very proud of him right now.

Well this is going to be easy. Heather thought. She could use these runes for good fortune almost anywhere. She took out her wand as it was her 'preferred' method. She pointed to her desk. "Intaglio wunjo wunjo wunjo wunjo wunjo...." She looked at it to make sure it was good. "Intaglio ansuz ansuz ansuz ansuz ansuz.... Intaglio manaz manaz manaz manaz manaz manaz..." She looked down at her desk and smiled.

Audrey smiled and said "Thank you". She then began to work dilligently on her table carving of Ansuz. Every stroke every sound of the chant had to be perfect. Audrey wouldn't accept less. She chanted the chant and felt the magic pouring out onto the right top corner of the table. She saw the rune carving into the desk. It was truly perfect.

...

Hmm, so staring off into space and thinking about runes were two things that definitely shouldn't go together. Or, just shouldn't go together in class that is.

Blinking, the Slytherin girl looked down at the wood board in front of her and the...wood carving tool thing...in her hand. Right, might as well get started.

Opening her book to chapter seven, her gaze glided down until she found the Thurisaz rune incantation. Man, these things were kinda long. But, what must be done...must be done. Even if everyone sounded silly saying them. Eh, maybe she'll just say it really quietly.

"Thurisaz thurisaz thurisaz

Trailing off, Evelyn pulled back the wood carving tool and gave a quick blow on the wood so the wood shavings would disperse and show her the rune. Well, it didn't look half bad. Carving was just like drawing! Almost. Practice makes perfect.

Glancing up to Truebridge as he started to speak, a small smile graced her lips when he said they could start carving on the table. Hehe, and who said Runes wasn't fun!?

Ancient Runes was totally fun.

Looking at the two runes she had carved into the wooden board, it seemed that the rune she had used the spell to create looked much better then the one she carved with the burin. On the other hand, she enjoyed carving the rune with the burin more than she did using the spell.

Ugh, tough choice.

Enjoy carving the runes by hand and hope to Merlin that they come out better than her first try? Or make sure they are carved as perfectly as possible and finish it quickly since she didn't all that much enjoy using the spell?

...Eh.

Selina nodded at the teacher who had liked her work. She could not help but beam at this, but tried to keep it to herself. "Personally, I liked either way. They both do the trick. But if I had to pick, it would be the latter. And thank you sir, I will begin at once."

Selina began to carve into the table and did her chant for the raidho.

She was going to hide her singing or chanting for later. So she pulled out her wand and began to carve the runes into her desk using Intaglio.

"Intaglio
kenaz kenaz kenaz"

She pronounced it clearly and slowly making the rune appear into the table neatly and with straight edges.

Burin still in hand, Sierra nodded a few times in reply to what the professor had told her. Table-carving time now! She gently moved her wood off to the side and positioned the burin just above a clear spot on the table. With her open book on the left side and her burin in her right hand, Sierra paused and studied her text for a few moments before beginning.

...and a few seconds later,

Of course she'd started with this rune. After all, it'd been the one she had been working hard on perfecting all along. The first rune she'd thought of when it came to carving something that would be beneficial to her in this class. Eihwaz stood for defense, protection, change, and and transformation, and thoughts of those words and their meanings filled her head as she carved.

...she continued, until finally a backwards, slanted Z-looking figure was etched into the table. She withdrew her burin and admired her work. Eihwaz---her hope for this class.

First Rune
 

THAT was a trick question and Marie knew it. She also knew that look of disappointment on Truebridge's face and she didn't like it.

Choosing not to answer that question she was about to get to work when...

Salander decided to dry her hair.

Feeling her hair stand on ends she reached up and tried to put it back in place as she glared at him. Oh, she would so be paying Sal back for this one. Just not now. She didn't want Truebs any more upset with her than he already was.

There would be no one to protect him in the common room though.



Reluctantly putting her wand away Marie listened to the next set of directions. Well this didn't sound like fun. She KNEW she wasn't going to like this Galdr business when James was teaching it to her. She also knew there was no way of getting out of doing it either.

Going up to the front she grabbed that poky looking thingy and went back to her table. Now to figure out what it was she had to mumble while gouging this thing into that piece of wood.

Thumbing through her slightly wet book she found the page with the incantations. Oh great. Not only was she going to have to physically dig into that stupid wood but now he was going to sound like a fool while doing it.

Could this class get any better here?

Putting the goggles and gloves back on she got to work gouging out the rune while chanting that silly little incantation... galdr thing or whatever it was.

Oh crap...

They had to make THREE runes. Why? Just WHY?

Oh, but they could use whatever method they wanted. Well that was a no brainer. Intaglio of course.

Pulling her wand back out of its holster Marie knew this was something she would be able to do now. Wand work was SO much easier here than physically carving into the wood.

Moving everything off her section of the table she began.

Touching her wand to the table, concentrating on what she wanted she started the incantation. "Intaglio... Perthro, Perthro, Perthro." Watching her wand move across the table she almost jumped for joy when she was finished. She had done it. She had actually carved a rune into the table.

Sitting back she admired her work... until it hit her. She still had to do two more runes.

Crud!

Now what two should she do?

Arya listened and listened and listened some more as the class progressed, not really understanding most of it, but taking the notes down anyway. She would need something to look at when studying, or maybe she would just use Sabel, he seemed to have a better grasp on the subject than she did.

When it came do doing more physical work, she jumped up and retrieved the materials she would need, including another piece of wood, then returned to her seat between her two best friends. Truebridge certainly seemed worried about their safety what with all the charms and safety equipment, though it shouldn't be too surprising considering how easily the students at this school bruised.

After flipping to chapter seven, and decided what rune she wanted to start on, she placed her wood in front of her and started her manual labor.

This was a tad more difficult than when she'd worked with her wand as she had to keep the wood in place, chant, and carve at the same time. Occasionally her burin slipped, catching her fingers a few times, but thankfully all the safety measures kept any harm from befalling her, and allowing her to continue working on the rune.

It looked a little worse than the one she did with her wand, but after practicing a bit more, she seemed to be making progress.

It was after she'd moved on to her next rune that the professor spoke again, and she glanced down at her rune. Yeeeeah, that bit of information would have been helpful when she'd first started. Scribbling down that bit of information, she picked back up her burin.

They could finally work on the table? Sweet. Since she already had the burin in her hand, and she also wanted to practice a bit more with it, she continued to work with her hands on the table, pushing her pieces of wood aside to practice on the table that begged to be carved on.

This carving look better than the ones on her wood, but it still was a bit jagged looking. Meh. She didn't stress it. To her the rune was still legible and would hopefully be magical as well.

"Thank you Professor", said Emily as she stopped and took a breath. She didn't really like this method.

After watching the Professor address the class Emily breathed out a sigh of releif and immediately whipped her wand back out. She much preferred the first method.

Emily held her wand to the table, she was confident she was ready. Thinking about the magical properties of her rune she began the incantation, tracing the rune on the table with her wand.
"Intaglio fehu fehu fehu fehu fehu fehu fehu..." she said as her wand carved out a perfect fehu rune. Emily smiled, when it came to wand work she was very good, not so much with elbow greese though.
Emily moved onto her next rune.
"Intaglio ansuz ansuz ansuz ansuz....." she chanted, again the rune carved into the wood with the tip of her wand.
Emily thought long and hard about what her next and last rune would be... so far she had selected fehu because it meant prosperity, promotion, goals, beginnings and power. Which she felt to be important in her final year so that she would be able to make a smooth thransition into life in the wizarding world. Emily had selected the ansuz rune because it represented authority and leadership, a balance between mind and body, success and decissions. Emily would need to make wise decessions throughout the year to ensure that she is successful with her NEWTS.
Suddenly Emily had an idea, holding her wand to the table again she said, "Intaglio kenaz kenaz kenaz kenaz kenaz.....".
Emily felt it appropriate to have the kenaz rune as is held magical properties relating to wisdom and insight, solution and enlightenment, creativity and knowledge. As a Ravenclaw she could never have too much knowledge.

She finished carving her first piece, conveniently only a few seconds before Professor Truebridge began to address the class again. Her green eyes lit up when she observed the chocolate frog adjacent to her book, and she reached over to grab it, carefully and fervently unwrapping it to find a card illustrated with Artemisia Lufkin, a woman whom Charley knew a great deal about already.
The first witch to become Minister of Magic! So admirable! I didn't even have a card of her before!
She glanced at JP, mouthing a question, wondering who had left her the chocolate.
Hard at work, Charley hadn't noticed when Professor Truebridge had come over to her.
She smiled towards the front of the classroom, hoping the professor would see how much better that had made her feel. She began beaming, though, as he bespoke of carving against the grain of the wood and laying it horizontally in front of oneself, which she had been doing.
Focus, discipline, introspection, knowledge, hardship; study aid, self-discipline, concentration in spite of distraction, purging the negative... Charley considered as she ran her fingers over the grooves in the small piece of wood. The divinatory meanings and magical uses of Thurisaz.
Maybe that's all I really need. Focus.
Keeping this in mind, she repackaged the candy, its frog not yet released, and slid it into her bag, removing her wand and beginning to carve another rune into the upper left corner of her table: Kenaz. It was a relatively simple configuration, requiring only two lines to be carved, and she promptly completed it.
She then began on the last required rune, deciding on Jera, one which was not quite so simple, this time in the upper right corner.
"Intaglio jera jera jera...." she started, gently running her wand along the tabletop in the shape of the rune.

ooc: I know we aren't supposed to RP other characters, but I don't think my insertion of JP's response is too out of order. I do hope it's not, but Jean1210, please tell me if you believe it is.

Rune 2
 

Once she had completed carving her first rune, Mia sat down and gave her hand a small shake. Okay doing this by hand wasn't as easy as she had first anticipated and it was making her hand all sweaty as well.

She rubbed her hand against her robes, wiping away the stickiness before taking the bruin in hand again. Now to move onto the next rune. Mia wondered if there was any particular places they should carve the runes. She couldn't remember whether Professor Truebridge had said they had to carve the runes in any special order.

Again Mia, stood and moved around the desk and placed her bruin against the desk at an angle. Once again she chanted while she moved the bruin along the desk.

Oh, that was a good rune to chant and as Mia repeated her carving and chanting she even threw in a few dance moves to go with it. This time it only took her four goes to get a clear rune into the desk.

Once she had finished, Mia stepped back and looked down at her new rune.

While Kurumi waited for Professor Truebridge to get around to her question, Kurumi decided to return to her singing and rune carving. Looking over her textbook, Kurumi circled 13 runes that she thought would be useful.

13, wow, that was a lot. Thankfully, she did not come from a culture where 13 is considered an unlucky number. If she had come up with something with a 4 in it then she would be in trouble.

Alright, time to get down to work...

having already carved the three she had done on her practice piece of wood with little trouble, so she was feeling pretty confident with the remaining ten runes.

For some reason, that last rune ended up sounding more like a song she had heard from a muggle movie, Sound of Music, but it did have a lovely tone to it. Having carved the rest of her runes, Kurumi dusted off the desk with a quick swish and flick for casting Scourgify and ran her hands over her desk feeling the grooves of her hard work.




Having completed her carving, for now at least, Kurumi took out her parchment to draw a quick sketch of what she had accomplished and added notes to each of them as to why she chose each rune as was written in her textbook.

Well, she finally made up her decision. She was going to carve the runes by hand and not with magic. Surprise surprise!

Flipping through the runes, her gaze trailed over the words, reading each meaning. She already knew she was going to be using Ansuz and Wunjo but she needed one more. Or more then one depending on what she thought would be best. Most of them, one way or another, could be used for this situation, but she definitely did not have enough time to carve all of those runes by hand before class was over. Unless, she asked to stay after class, but even though Ancient Runes was one of her more likable classes and Professor Truebridge was just plain awesome...there was no way she was going to be staying after class.

Finally deciding on four, Evelyn flipped the pages back to chapter seven and locating each of the galdr's. Alright. Wasn't so hard.

Just...long.

Why did these have to be so long?!

As she chanted the galdr, quite quietly she may add, the Slytherin girl started to carve the rune onto the table, near the edge and a little to her left. Might as well evenly space these things out. Otherwise, it'd look completely random!

But when she was finally done, she stopped the chant like song and leaned back away from the table to get a better look at her work. Not bad. Definitely better then the first time she carved using this...carving tool...but not the best either.

...That bugged her. Aw well...It was still fun.

Emmy gasped. She hadn't heard Professor Truebridge say anything about three runes! Oops...
Quickly, she set to work.
She decided on the burin method next,
"Wunjo wunjo wunjo
Wu wa wi we wo
Wun wan win wen won
Wo we wi wa wu
W w w u u u n n n"
Amazingly, it worked - she now had what looked like a capital 'P' on her table.

One more to go. She went back to her preferred method - Intaglio.
Putting her wand to the wood one last time, she intoned,
"Intaglio Raidho raidho raidho raidho..."
And there it was; a stylised capital 'R' next to the 'X' and 'P'.

Lucy looked at Professor as he approached to her and acknowledge her rune and said "Thank you Professor " and gave a smile.

The she stared with her work on rune on the table. Lucy was all very set to curve her runes on the table she was very excited too. As to start she decided on which method would she be using, she was very confused then finally she decided to go with the one she felt was easy for her and decided to curve it using her wand. So she took her wand in her hand and took a deep breath "Hmm so let's start" she said looking at the table and her wand.

She pointed her wand on the table and said "Intaglio Fehu Fehu Fehu Fehu Fehu Fehu Fehu Fehu Fehu Fehu" saying that she also concentrated on the result. As this was said, she had completed doing on of her rune. "Ok, so one is done maybe I should go on with the other."

So she took her wand and pointed it to the table again and concentrated on the result of the rune and said "Intaglio Gebo Gebo Gebo Gebo Gebo Gebo Gebo Gebo Gebo Gebo" saying this she stopped when she saw it was completed. "Hmm, this is done too, maybe now I should call the Professor to show my work." She thought and looked for Professor; she saw professor looking at everyone's work and said
"Professor, I've completed it." Saying this she smiled.

Fail Post! It's late and I need to post before bed! GAH!
 

Patroclus would be the first to admit it, he loved getting positive feedback from Professor, who didn't??

Gladly pushing his wood bit to the side, Patroclus starred at the untouched magnificence that was his and Destiny's table.
"It's Craving Time!" Patroclus smiled gleefully, swapping the burin for his wand, the spell had worked much faster for the boy, and he really wanted to master it, so the spell it was!

"Intaglio Wunjo Wunjo Wunjo Wunjo Wunjo Wunjo Wunjo Wunjo Wunjo" Concentrating hard on the capital P shape of the Wunjo rune, Patroclus holding onto his wand very tightly, moved it across the table top, just left of center. As he repeated the rune, and concentrated on the result, he remembered why he was craving Wunjo; 'Achievement, success, completion of tasks.....' Moving his wand with focus and determination, it was with little surprise that before his eyes the Rune of Wunjo had appeared.

Grinning, Patroclus placed his wand to the right of the center, the side closeted to Destiny, and then once again began to declare the spell, "Intaglio Dagaz Dagaz Dagaz Dagaz Dagaz Dagaz Dagaz" once again his reasoning swelled in his thought, the words mixing with the name of the rune, weaving in and out of one another, 'Clarity, Focus, Awareness, positive outcomes.....' His movements were fluid, the side figure eight seemed to deepen into the wood as he repeated the shape and the words over and over....

It was with his thrid Rune that Patroclus decided he would use the galdr method. And this rune had to be of some significance. Flicking back to Chapter Five, Patroclus found it at once, 'success through partnership....' The rune to signify the teacher student relationship, a joint venture to success. Flipping back to Seven, Patroclus found the correct galdr and began to chant, moving the burin across the wood, inbetween the two other runes,

It was an easy rune to cave, but it meant alot.

Patroclus was done!

the professor seem busy in other, Raven decided to make a move, and because Raven found out, its more easy to used the galdr method than intaglio method, Raven choose it.

Now for the Algiz -- A shield, for protection, channeling energies. what to do next. try it first in the wood, Raven readied the burins, place it in the wood, and the chant begin.

JP Smiled at her. Noticing that she had understood that it was professor truebridge that place the chocolate frog there. This professor was awesome. What a good guy. He had a favorite rune now. Thurisaz. He focused. Deciding to use intaglio for the first and last runes. he started with Thurisaz. "Intaglio Thurisaz, thurisaz, thurisaz." Perfect. Now a more difficult but definitely more worth while. He decided on jera as his next rune. He saw that his new friend was doing the same. He would use the chant and chisel method this time.
"Ok Here we go." Starting to chant. He started to carve the intricate rune. It was turning out fine. He was please with this class and it was making him excited for what else he would learn here. He planned on getting the best grade possible in this class. He knew he could do it.

Louisa's cheeks went a shade of red. Or was the weather suddenly hotter? She was so surprised at the 'cheating yourself' statement. No one ever said that to her. A second of meditation.
Or not.
She nodded foolishly and laid her back to the chair. She wouldn't use that artifact I tell you. Louisa watched as her fellows worked on their pieces of wood. Not a very thrilling scene but better than nothing.
Soon the Professor caught their attention again.

Cool then! Let's get down on it. Louisa gave a frightful glance to the 'artifact' before grabbing her wand and clearing her throat. "Okay wand don't let me down please. I chose you over the Galdeer thing." ok, less wand-talking and more carving. "Intaglio Ansuz..ansuz ansuz ansuz ansuz.." She moved her wand near the surface of the table making uneven carvings all over it.

Her mind was focused on the shape of the Rune she should be carving. Around two minutes later she stopped and took a look at her work. "Mmm.. Not bad I guess." She told herself with a faint smile. There was too much carving at places where white spots appeared for some weird reason but it resembled Ansuz well.. thankfully.

Now it was up for the last rune.This was really funy.Maybe the blonde could carve some more runes into the table when she finsihed.Hopefully the professor wouldnt mind. Ohhh and thinking about carving runes, maybe the Slytherin could careve some into her bed. How cool would that be?! Taking a deep breath she made sure to be ready to chant.
