Tavelon hadn't eaten anything all day, and he was very hungry. Trying to still pay attention to class, he discreetly grabbed a chocolate frog and unwrapped it.

Ilfacrombe incident... page...15? Tavelon thought, flipping through his book. He had heard something about it before, and people always- But then the chocolate frog wriggled itself out of his hand and started hopping on the floor.

"No... psst.. Come back!" he hissed in an undertone. Tavelon slid off his cushion and took a grab for it, but it kept hopping past the row of students. Still lending an ear to the professor, he continued to crawl behind the students after his frog, then took a swipe at it and slipped, falling hard on the floor. But he had his frog, and wouldn't let it get away this time. Slinking back to his seat hoping no one noticed, Tavelon bit off the frog's head.

Once they started talking about the Ilfacrombe incident and the welsh dragon, she became distracted by doodling dragons all over her parchment and then charming them so they animated. She was broken out of her creative mood when she saw a frog hop past her and someone crawling after it. 'Weird class.' she thought as she looked back down to her paper. "Sounds like it was a splendid day." she said to herself, referring to the incident, and then going back to drawing her dragons, taking notes every so often.

Ellie was scribbling down almost everything being said, for she didn't want to miss anything. Her hand was aching. Her writing wasn't all that clear because she was writing so fast. She couldn't think of anything to say at the moment, it seemed that a lot of the stuff she had read in the summer had not sunk in at all. Still, she found the class very interesting.

Mina diligently continued to take notes, she was very fascinated with it all. Never realizing how little she knew about history, she was looking forward to learning as much as she could.

"Maybe the strength of the charm would have been stronger?" she volunteered. "Dodgy Dirk probably wouldn't have remembered any of it and probably wouldn't have been considered crazy."

Herminny raised her hand to answer yet again the current question at hand and said, "Hmm, most likely there never would have been the Dodgy Dirk incident because all of the muggles memories would have been modified including his.".

Theo's legs swung underneath his chair. Well he tried to swing his legs. Like he used to when he was bored. But he couldn't, his legs were too long. Instead he looked out the window. The window he used to look out and wish he was among the stars. No again he wished he was. But this time he wasn't being taught by Forrester. He missed Edward. He missed Astronomy.

Looking up as a couple of first years reacted to what he had said about Yetis eating people, Truebridge nodded. "Yes, Yetis eat people. Among other things really. But unless you are alone in the Tibetan mountains I'd not worry overmuch."

There certainly weren't any Yeti here.

"You are all quite right with your answers. We can certainly assume that the charms would have been more effective and better executed had Obliviators been present and likely 'Dodgy Dirk' would not have gotten away with the impression of the dragon that he did." Truebridge watched the escaped chocolate frog in fascination for a minute, then vanished his banana peel with a negligent wave of his wand.


"There are two factors with an Obliviation charm, Natka. The first is how complex and deep rooted the memories of the target are and how linked they are to other memories, the second is the magical ability and training of the witch or wizard casting it. Memory charms are very, very difficult to cast correctly without leaving lasting damage. It is entirely possible that, in casting a memory charm on Dodgy Dirk, instead of his memory of the event being targeted, other parts of his brain were effected. If he showed mental imbalances or strange behaviours in other ways then it is little wonder no muggles believed his stories." Truebridge explained.

"In any case, most adult witches and wizards can cast a very basic 'you did not see what you just saw' sort of Obliviate, but the risk is indeed higher that something will go wrong. Replacing an erased memory with something new, or rebuilding linked memories is domain of very advanced and experienced Obliviators only, just as recovering lost memories is the domain of specialist healers." Ethan hoped he'd answered her question sufficiently.

"Now, can anyone summarize what we've learned and talked about so far today?"

Raising one hand and rifling through his scruffy, apparently illegible notes, Jake spoke. "We spoke about History of Magic, what it is, some events. The two-way mirror effect, the stature of secrecy and why it's there, and certain breaches of it."

He looked up again, not taking much in now his eyes were strained from trying to read his own writing. "Right?"

Theo raised his hand, "We learnt that yeti's eat people. And that obliviate is hard to cast. It is best to be an Obliviator."

K raised her hand"We talked about The Statute of Secrecy and how it keeps the two words apart though there are some ways around it we talked about some of the events in the History of Magic as well what exactly the history of magic is." K said she think she got most to part of it right.

Ahhh ha, knew it Arrick thought to himself, scribbling the words 'memory', 'root', 'target' and scrawling what looked to be a bunch of arrows on top of them all. So magic could be used to make people forget things, or remember odd things. Arrick didn't like the idea of messing with people's heads, though. It was dodgy, unnatural business.

"Normal people ernt supposed to know about magic for everyone's good," he said, though it sounded like he doubted that statement. That's what grownups said about kids knowing about grown-up stuff, and it never sat well with Arrick. He hated not knowing.

Evelyn looked up from her drawings and raised her hand. "We talked about the Statute of Secrecy and why it is important and necessary for our world as well as the muggle world, even though it doesn't really apply to them, and the occasions where the statute has been breached. And we learned something about clause 73..." she broke off, still being confused on that particular topic. "Something about the Tibetian government that i can't remember..." she paused again 'Wait, was that part even important to the lesson?'. "And we learned more about the Ilfracombe Incident and what could have been different if trained Obliviators were there." Evelyn tried to think of anything else that they learned today, but became distracted when her dragon drawings started fighting each other. 'I really need to pay more attention the next time i have this class.'

Tavelon quickly swallowed the rest of his chocolate frog (his hunger now satisfied until dinner) and raised his hand.

"Why we need to keep ourselves and magical things hidden from the muggles, how the International Confederation of Wizards keeps the statue of secrecy and what happens when it's breached." he answered.

"But I also have another question, Professor- How is it decided what creatures are magical and need to be hidden from muggles? What would be wrong with muggles knowing about, say, a simple garden gnome?" Tavelon then noticed he had a little bit of chocolate on his chin and wiped it off.

"Good. You've all been paying attention." Ethan answered and turned his attention to the Hufflepuff as he asked a question.

"Magical creatures have, in the past, either been exploited by muggles or indeed exterminated as pests. Sometimes too, it is important to keep something simple like a garden gnome hidden so that a Muggle does not say to himself, 'well If this exists, I wonder about...'. Little things are just as important in the grand scheme of things."

Truebridge looked around the class, pleased with how well the lesson had gone and impressed with the new first years.

"Alright. We are actually done and I hope the lesson was not too painful for you. Feel free to take a chocolate frog or a banana on your way out and copy the homework from the board and if anyone has any questions feel free to come and see me in my... the office."

Whit couldn't believe class was already over. Seemed a lot shorter than usual. She simply shrugged and copied down the homework and a reminder to do it. Getting up from her seat, she went up to Professor Truebridge's desk, grabbed a banana and said, "Great class today, and thanks for the banana!" and, happily, walked out.

Virgi copied down her homework and went over to James and Ella, sliding a note on their desk which said,

Bye! Meet me at the Room of Requirement 8:00 EST.

Evan smiled at the professor. He'd never have guessed that he could actually like this lesson. He quickly wrote down their homework and got to his feet, heading out of the class. He grabbed a chocolate frog and said "Thank you for the awesome lesson sir!" to the professor before exitting the class.

Evelyn looked up at the board and read through the homework, copying it down on her dragon filled paper, scowling as she read each question. 'Ugh, probably going to take forever to finish this assignment.' she thought, pressing harder down on the quill then necessary. Packing her bag and standing up, she grabbed a chocolate frog and waved goodbye to the Professor, smiling slightly at him, and left the classroom.

Abigail copied down the homework that she was sure would take up allot of her time. She didn’t know why but she couldn’t really remember much of the lesson. She had a funny feeling that she’d fallen asleep at some point. This didn’t make any sense because she quite liked history.

Putting everything in her bag she decided to try her hardest with this homework and catch up. ‘Maybe it was the comfy cushions’ she thought as she walked towards the door. “Bye Professor”

Shoving his notes haphazzardly into his school bag, Jake stood up off his cushion and stretched out his legs. Oyyyye, he hated sitting on the floor, it made his butt numb. Grabbing the cushion, Jake threw it back to where he'd got it from and, after making sure he had the homework, gave Truebridge a small nod and went for the door...

... banana or chocolate frog?

Banana... chocolate.

Biting his lip and making a face after his hand hovered over the chocolate for a moment or two, Jake left the room without getting anything.

Arrick scribbled down what appeared to be a copy of the homework in another page of his textbook before hauling it with him on his way out. He eyed the small stack of food the Professor had been snacking on and decided the bananas were safe--Tavelon had warned him the chocolate frogs moved.

He plucked a banana and scooted out of the classroom, head abuzz with thoughts.

"Great class. Thank you." Carter said grabbing a chocolate frog on his way out.

Tavelon scribbled down the assignment and stood up. Contemplating another chocolate frog, he decided not to do so. "Thank you, Professor, the lesson was a lot of fun." Especially with the squishy pillows and chocolate frogs.

"Thanks for the class, professor!" Ella yelled to the back of the room, emerging from her cushion, (ooo, sore bum) and waving to the teacher.

"Don't be alarmed if you get a visit from me soon, and I have chocolate."



Ella winked and strode out the door.

Aaron quickly copied down the homework and packed his things up. He took a moment to looked at the broom he really wanted and put it in his bag. He walked to the front of the class, took a chocolate frog and said, "Have a good day, Professor!" And walked out of the room...
