"Well done, all of you. This is not an easy spell to learn." He walked to the back of the class and drew a glowing line across the back of the classroom, segregating those who had yet to perform the charm successfully from those who could perform it. "Those of you who have yet to produce a patronus, please stay on the far side of this line, where you will be safe. Continue to practice the charm independently; if you need assistance please raise your wand and cast lumos and I will come to assist you. In the interim. I am going to be working with those who have cast the charm. IF you find yourself capable of casting the charm and sustaining it, you may cross the line and join your classmates in the final segment of this class."

"Those of you who have successfully cast this charm, please listen carefully. Whether you have cast a sustained corporeal patronus or merely an ethereal patronus, you are well equipped to complete the next part of this lab. Remember your technique and remember to concentrate on your happiest memory. It may save your life." He turned around and strode to the front of the class, casting again.

The room became pitch black for only a moment, then very dim light returned to the room. Both trunks at the front of the room were open... open and empty.

"I have released several lethifolds in the classroom. They are stalking you as we speak and intend to smother you. Once you are attacked, utilize your patronus charm to shield yourself. Once you have successfully protected yourself from an attack, you may join your classmates in the safety zone at the back of the class. If you require emergency assistance, please raise your wand and cast the scintillus roseus charm to send up red sparks and I will assist you. Begin." Kazimeriz said.

ooc: RP your character prepraring if you would like to be attacked, and then the lethifolds will find you. If you are successful, please RP yourself moving to the back of the class. If you need help, the 'red sparks' charm is scintillus roseus because hey, Rowling didn't give us one. :) As always, PM or IM with questions and please don't RP for the lethifolds or they may really eat you IC. :D Thanks, Xana

Anna stilled and grew quiet as the professor began to talk once again, this time giving directions for the next part of class. She watched as he drew a line across the room separating students who could not produce a patronus from the ones that could. Anna remained on the side with the students that could successfully cast a Patronus Charm. As the professor talked, Anna gripped her wand tighter and she held it up in preparation for a surprise Lethifold attack. She glanced nervously around the room, wondering if and when one of them would choose her as its victim. Nevertheless, she was ready for it. She was sure her owl could defeat it.

Qaz had an urge to run, but she knew that nothing really bad would happend, so she prepared for an attack. It was dark enough that she didn't have to close her eyes. She could hear the music in her head. She was playing the Warsaw Piano Concerto in front of hundreds of people. She was playing flawlessly and the crowd loved her. The Applause was exhilerating!

All she had to do was keep that in her mind and remember to cast the charm correctly. No Problem.

Helios Sunrider 04-08-2009 03:50 AM

The light faded, and his patronus went with it. It wasn't fear that he felt, but a heightend sense of awareness. The boy's heart was pounding in his ears like war drums. There was no memories to summon, his mind firmly in the now.

"Freya, Kayla. I'm not so sure if we can trust professor Kaz to keep us safe. We should stay close, make sure no one gets in over their head." Shooting glances to the two girls, Helios readied his wand. If this were a more casual occurence, he would wonder how much he could trust either girl. But survival often makes hasty alliances.

The lethifold moved with the utmost of silence throughout the now darkened space of the DADA room. It slithered, heavily, like a weighted chunk of smoke as it found its first potential meal, a girl who, in her stillness, seemed an easy enough target. Creeping up behind her the creature gave off a clamy, humid sensation, the only indication of it's prescence. In a matter of seconds, the creature had wrapped it's cold, cold body around the girl and was begining to squeeze.

Qaz felt it, rather than saw it. It sent a shiver down her spine, but she knew what she had to do.

Music flowing through her mind, what joy...

Although she was being held, she managed to move her wand and with the small movement, bellowed, 'Expecto Patronum' She watched with joy as light eminated from her wand. It was taking shape. It WAS a mountain lion. 'Get this off of me,' she yelled at her cougar and watched it as it circled around her back.

A dense, inky shadow behind Anna Greingoth steathily slithered towards her, appearing to elongate as it approached from behind. Sizing up its prey, the lethifold slid around her neck and rapidly shrouded her nose and mouth, quickly making its way up her face. Its horribly thick, weighty, clammy touch left no room for oxygen intake, clinging to her face as if being sucked by the vacuum of space. Om nom nom.

The lethifold's grip losened as Qaz sent her mountain lion patronus out of her wand until finally it released her entirely. The mountain lion had successfully beared claw and tooth into the blanket-like dark creature and sent it shrinking away into the safety of the darkness, it's edges rippling as it did so.

Cedric was preparing himself whenever the lethifold will attack him and he was still practicing the patronus charm while thinking his happiest memory..

druidflower 04-08-2009 04:45 AM

Tobi clamped his mouth shut, gripped his wand and focused on his happiest memory.

The LAST thing he wanted was to panic at a time like this. Getting eaten by a lethifold would be highly embarrassing... Among other drawbacks he could think of.

The Quill Shop. Parchement and Ink and Raspberries.
He repeated in his head like a mantra. The Quill Shop. Parchement and Ink and Raspberries....

Torchwood 04-08-2009 04:47 AM

Qaz felt a gigantic sense of relief when she was let go. She calmly walked over to the safe side of the line...and almost threw up. She found a chair and sat down, trying to recover from the ordeal.

PhoenixRising 04-08-2009 04:47 AM

from the back.... ;)

Dominic took a deep breath, as he listened to Kazimeriz issuing them a few more tips. At least an ethereal patronus ... He was FIFTEEN for the love of Merlin! Caleum Myers was former Defense Professor and he would be quite disappointed if he ever knew the state the Hufflepuff was in now. Panicky and frustrated because the one happy memory that came to mind first failed to produce but wisps of smoke.

Tiny, delicate wand motions.

It was then, as Dominic repeated the instructions over in his mind, that he knew what his happiest memory was. A memory that had no sad feelings, but only warmness. Envisioning before him the three people who had truly made his first two years of Hogwarts memorable. His role models and mentors: Caleum Myers, Ethan Truebridge, and Macadrian Shackleton were all fresh in his mind. Clearly beaming down at him and praising him and helping him. Giving him the strength he needed.

"Expecto Patronum!"
The fifth year called, waving his wand appropriately, his full focus on those mentors and the memories of the time he had with them. Something small and four-legged scurried from the tip of his wand, disappearing though a few moments later. Well it was better than the wisps.

Anna's eyes darted around and around the room, trying to catch the slightest trace of a Lethifold attempting to attack. Anna knew they creatures were amongst her, that she was sure of. What she wasn't sure of, though, was exactly where those creatures were, and if--or when---they'd sneak towards her and began their attack. Her wand raised, Anna turned to face the opposite wall, her eyes drifting towards the dark corner in the far back of the room. Anna imagined a Lethifold to be there...stalking her and inching forward second by second by second. She didn't know if there was one back there for sure, of course, she'd just let her imagination run wild as a way to distract herself from he inevitable attack. Professor Kazimeriz was present, though, and no matter how much fear he actually instilled in the students, Anna knew he'd be there to save here if worse came to worse.

It happened before Anna even had time to prepare herself more than she been. The Lethifold had snuck up behind her, coming from the exact opposite direction than that dark corner Anna had been eyeing. She could feel it consuming her body more and more by the second, and Anna struggled slightly due to the uneasy feeling. She felt as if she'd suddenly buried her face deep inside a pillow, and that her breathing had ceased until she could find a way to uncover her face. The answer seemed so simple, yet so difficult at the same time. Anna felt the urge to claw at her face in an attempt to free herself from this intrusion. She knew that wouldn't work, though, so she gripped her wand even tighter and began to angle it slightly in the direction the Lethifold seemed to be in.

"Argghhh," she grumbled, starting to feel as if she might turn blue in the face and pass out soon. She needed a happy memory---and fast! Cale...she needed Cale. Anna squeezed her eyes shut and began to plead silently with her memories, urging them to float to the surface of her mind and help her through the mess she'd found her self in. "Please come to me," she thought to herself, trying to concentrate on Cale and those memories instead of the terror that had nearly overtaken her.

...and then they came.

They were few and far between at first, but the more Anna focused on them, the more they flooded in. Anna thought about the time she'd realized that "rude, ill-mannered, arrogant, clumsy" boy was her latest crush. She thought at the day he'd told her she was his crush, and then the day he'd officially asked her to be his girlfriend. Anna though about that first date in Hogsmeade (where they'd had their first kiss) and that summer they spent together in Hawaii.

Anna continued to angle her wand until it was in what she considered the perfect position. She looped her wand in the e-shape they'd been taught to do, and then, as her wand swooped downward, Anna called out a strong "Expecto Patronum!" Anna could have sworn she heard a slight whooshing noise as her patronus darted from her wand. Her beautiful silvery owl took off in flight, fighting against the attack of the Lethifold.

It passed up the boy who was still practicing his charm. He moved with too much liveliness to be considered a possible treat. Moving on, the lethifold spotted another boy nearby. He was a bit stiller. Staying rather low to the ground the beast from the tropics slithered up behind Tobi and waited until ... until... the perfect time arose and the creature struck. Stretching itself from it's crouch-like gathered position and coiled around Tobi like a soft, cold, amoebus serpent.

I'm ready for the Lethifold

Cedric think that he was practiced enough so he was now waiting for the lethifold to attack him..

Ameh 04-08-2009 06:11 AM

Lethi...Lethi.... Lethifolds?!

Raiden's eyes went wide and he stared at Professor Kazimeriz in horror. Lethifolds?! LETHIFOLDS?! That was insane! How many people had DIED from lethifold attacks?! A few short, panicked breaths escaped him before he managed to calm himself down. Most of them had died in their sleep, he reminded himself. They hadn't been able to protect themselves because they'd been sleeping. He was awake, and had a wand in his hand. He would be okay, right?

Resigned to it, he tightened his grip on his wand and clenched his teeth. The only thing to do... was to focus as hard as he could on his memory. He closed his eyes and gulped; he wasn't even sure if he wanted to see it coming. That might make him forget...

Another lethifold began to venture out and caught sight of a boy who was just standing there looking rather delicious. The creature shot out of the shadows and in no time at all, was wrapped around Cedrics chest as whisps of it began to wisk up and down the boys face in an attempt to impede his breath.

Wenzlebug 04-08-2009 06:21 AM

Cedric was shock when the Lethifold wrapped him..his wand are on his hand..then he did the arm position....after that he think the happiest memory in his life...his family was reunite..he and his cousin were playing while his relatives was busy decorating their house because its the season of christmas..

"Expecto Patronum.."Cedric shout as a growling lion came out of his wand..now he was sure that he can get rid to this lethifold who was impeding his breath..so he move his patronus lion closer to the lethifold..

As soon as the lion lept out of Cedrics wand, the lethifold relinquished its whisps from his chest. With a great manner of fierceness, the lion patronus chased down and attacked the lethifold until it was too tired and wounded to try again. Quietly, it crept back into the darker reaches of the room.

As the classroom went dark suddenly, Elizabeth froze. Her knowledge that the darkness was never good when it came to this class broke her concentration again and her eagle faded away before a dim light returned to the room. But before she could relax at the return of any sort of light, she heard what Professor Kazimeriz said, an instant before her wide eyes acknowledged the trunks that were now standing open. Lethifolds?!?!?, she thought, her grip on her wand tightening as she sought out Ludo again. She knew it was irrational that he was able to calm her down, but she couldn't deny that he did.

Finding him nearby in the dim light, she inched over toward him, keeping an eye on the rest of the room now. The lethifolds had started to attack, and she didn't want to have one sneak up on her when she was unprepared. So as she slowly moved, she tried to focus on her happy memory again, trying to keep it in mind.

Pop! Goes the weasel. Sam had been ready for this, he knew it was coming. Perhaps he had some sort of a sixth sense for this kind of stuff. Nevertheless, he was immediately scared out of his mind. Lethifolds! They were horrific...they squeezed you to death! He gritted his teeth and pulled out his wand, setting a stance with his feet a shoulder-length apart. Now...what was going to happen exactly? He couldn't remember. Mastering his fear was going to be harder than he imagined.

Sam whipped around quickly, the hair on the back of his neck standing up. "Oh no..." he groaned as he saw some of the other students being attacked. It was more horrible than he thought it would be; he gripped his wand tighter.

Spying a boy nearby, one of the lethifolds spread itself like a blanket, thin and wide and caught enough air, so that it's lightweight body was airborne momentarily to spring a surprise attack on the unsuspecting child. It aimed itself and landed upon the boys head immediately aiming to asphyxiate by plugging up his nose and mouth.

Kayla stood quietly as the room went dark and she relaxed and controlled her breathing. She became totally aware of her surroundings letting her other senses take over and she blocked out the other students who were taking turns in defeating the Lethifold. Her wand was gripped tightly in her hand and she concentrated on her happy memory, letting the joy of that one memory fill her whole entire body.

Freya only ganced towards Helios as the boy spoke to two of them, there was no way on Earth that Freya would sit back and let a lethifold do much harm to anybody, that's just how she was. Bossy, protective, and territorial.

Still, Freya had to relax herself because for a moment her crocodile began to flicker almost like a light switch had been flipped on and off very quickly. She concentrated some more on her memory, and there it was. The birds were chirping again, and Hollis was walking nearby Freya and giving his trademark laugh which always seemed to make everybody else around him happy. Even the present Freya began to get a nice warm and fuzzy feeling from it, though she still looked around the room with her sharp eyes, wary of any movement even if it were to be a breeze; her wand at the ready.
Meanwhile, her crocodile had regained it's strength and continued to circle it's creator, mouth still wide open...though it stayed relatively close to Helios as well since he right next to Freya.

But then-
Freya remembered the very last time she had seen her dear friend; he had been foaming at the mouth, scratching and screaming, with his teeth chattering...completely insane. Her crocodile drifted over to Freya and began to vanish very slowly. 'No! Nonononono! You get back here now!' She started to think of that grand memory again, and gradually her patronus started to come back. Her eyes still darted around the room, and wand still in hand.

TeafortheSoul 04-08-2009 01:00 PM

Standing in the midst of mostly older students, those who could successfully cast a corporeal patronus, Celandine froze statue still as she heard the words "...several lethifolds...smother..." Her mind reeled and the room spun out of control- not quickly like the logical side of her brain expected- but more in a sickening, slightly wonky slow motion, ground-slipping out from-under-foot kind of way. Everything was grey and everyone else faded to nothingness as a feeling of raw terror sunk claws into her throat from the inside out.

This wasn't like her boggart. With that, a part of her knew it was still a boggart, even as she watched the boggart-lethifold attempt to subsume boggart-Nico and boggart-Will. She had overcome that.

This was something else entirely, the painful and terrifying memory of her seven year old self, staying with her family in their holiday home in the Maldives.

It had been hot. A hot and sticky night that had caused Cela to leave a window open just a crack. The tiniest, most infinitesimal crack. But that had been enough. And it had been her fault. She had awoken in the night with a heavy feeling of dread and a parched throat, so she had slipped from her bed and made her way to the kitchen, the feeling of dread growing with each step she took along the shadowy corridor.

She passed the half-open door to the bedroom where Nicholai, Robert and Adriano slept and hesitated at the sight of shadows pooling in odd places, despite the moonlight overflowing through the curtainless window. Blinking the sleep from her eyes, she had nudged the door open gently with her foot...

Her wand was clasped in a white-knuckled grip and Cela was breathing shallowly, completely lost in the memory.

... as the door had opened, Cela had frowned. Where were Robert and Adriano? Her eyes sought out 11-year old-Nico and she saw that he was awake and staring. But staring at what? She followed his line of sight and saw. The silence was odd and unnatural and the shapes were moving, undulating, like cloth in the wind. Her eyes desperately strayed to Nicholai again and in the bright moonlight she could see that he was crying. She'd never seen him cry before or since, but there he was, age eleven, brand new wand pointed at the lethifolds quietly attempting to feed on their siblings and quite unable to summon even one memory that was moderately happy. It had to have been fate, and certainly an indication of the close connection the Cela and her brothers shared, because Keiran, the eldest and just finishing his final year of school, had suddenly burst into the room and driven the lethifolds away with the brightest and strongest Patronus Cela had seen in her life.

While Robert and Adriano recovered remarkably quickly, Cela and Nicholai had both been fairly traumatised by the event, Cela in particular, who blamed herself completely and utterly for having left the window open in the first place.

So now she stood, alone in a crowded room, tears trickling openly down her pale cheeks, while Celandine Toussaint waited to face her fears for real.
