| | | Advanced Arithmancy Lesson 3
As you step through the Arithmancy classroom doors, the wooden desks and chairs have been arranged into two neat rows. Professor Shackleton sits behind her desk, her legs crossed and a glass of water in her hand. With her other hand, she is scribbling quickly on a piece of stationary parchment. Her owl stands atop the corner of her desk, preening itself while waiting for Macadrian to finish her letter. While taking a sip of her water, she reads over what she wrote and when satisfied with the letter's contents, she taps her wand to the parchment. Quickly it folds itself over twice and slips into a thick parchment envelope, which she ties to the owl's leg before sending it off out the window.
She then turns her attention to you, "Good afternoon! Take a seat wherever you'd like and we'll get started very soon." OOC: This lesson is for fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh years ONLY. Any students in first, second, or third year who post in this thread will be dismissed. |

Professor Shackleton stifled a giggle at the skunk stripe Tobi had just put in his hair and confirmed, "You've arrived at the correct answer. So, now we have to figure out how to interpret this number. As I mentioned earlier, the middle name tells us our emotional approach to life and our likes and dislikes. Using Chapter Four in the Basic Arithmancy textbook, extrapolate how the qualities listed for the number seven could apply to my likes or dislikes or my emotional approach to life. And don't worry about saying something wrong or something you think might be embarassing for me, 'cause it won't be." Professor Shackleton gave Tobi an encouraging smile.

Dan glanced down at his textbook and quickly read the qualities that the Number 7 brought , given these qualities he supposed Professor Shackleton would be good in an argument. he raised his hand " Errm well i suppose youd be good in an argument, as two of the qualities of number sevens are that they use logic and reason ... which could come in hand in an argument " he half frowned suspecting he was talking gobbledygook

| Made of Awesome | Ern-la the Best-wa | TZ's Apogee Copernicus checked his text and then raised his hand. "Professor, I think the number for your middle name, seven, could indicate that you like seeking information. You might not necessarily have a reason to do it, but just the act of learning new things is probably enjoyable for you. And I think that your middle name also shows that teaching is something that is very close to your heart as well. It probably also means that you're never satisfied with the basic information, which means that you don't come to decisions easily and you require everyone around you to provide you with the fullest information as well."

Deep in thought and somewhat confused, Anna scratched her head and tried to follow what the professor was saying to her. They were supposed to interpret a number without using the textbook as a guide?!?! Oh, Merlin! Anna had never analyzed numbers with her textbook on hand. At least they'd be able to use the Basic Arithmancy textbook. Flipping the textbook open to chapter four, Anna began to read information about the number seven.
Raising her hand, Anna said, "Professor Shackleton, you've always been really, really intelligent, and it says here that number seven's are 'intellectual, have inner wisdom, and are scientific-technological minded.' I'd say that pretty much sums you up. Emotionally, I think that means you are probably similar to me---you require a textbook solution to a lot of what you encounter in your life. Not necessarily a textbook solution, but even a proven, definite solution. If that really is how you feel, Professor, then don't worry---you are not alone," she assured, thinking how her own methods of thinking sometimes frustrated her. "According to this textbook, you're also a very private person, so I'd say you enjoy independent projects and alone time, and you dislike large crowds of people. Not only that, I see the word 'education' in here. I think that means you value your own education, as well as the education of others---obviously."

The Basic Arithmancy Texbook? Wha? Tobi wondered. Oh yeah! Tobi scrambled to the shelves and yanked one down. He skittered back and stood by his calculations, balancing the textbook open on one raised knee. The effect made him look like an overgrown, redheaded flamingo.
“Um, let’s see,” Tobi mumbled, “Seven is ‘Analytical and Mystical’ well that kinda works for an Arithmancy professor, doesn’t it? There are a lot of things like, calculation, education, logic, reason, skeptical and while it doesn’t usually go along with metaphysical and occult mysteries, it sort of works when you put it together. I would take this to mean you like anything you can explain with facts or calculation and you don’t like things that you just have to accept or take someone’s word for it.
“As for your emotional approach, you rely less on your emotions and more on your senses, maybe?” He hoped that wasn’t insulting, even though she said she wouldn’t be, he hardly considered that guess flattering. “I mean, Pisces is an emotional Zodiac sign, but the Hermit is not an emotional card; it’s a card of wisdom, and guidance. Seven seems to be very level headed and not very ruled by their emotions, one of your key words is dignity, another is private; you probably don’t wear your emotions on your sleeve. So I guess while you’re not cold, you probably aren’t very ruled by your temper either.”
Tobi waited for her reaction. She had said she wouldn't be mad, but she hadn't said she wouldn't dock those bazillion points. Tobi wanted to keep those bazillion points.

OOC: I have a mega-migraine, so I'm going to put the lesson on hold for tonight and will resume tomorrow. Thanks

Tobi grinned a mile wide and snapped the Basic Arithmancy Textbook shut-
"Yarg!"
- On his index finger. That one smarted a little. He stuck it in his mouth.

Especially due to the lack of Hufflepuffs for which he would be TOTALLY on their behinds later in this lesson. Honestly, Arithmancy wasn't really THAT hard and the Professor was their head of house. Half focused on the whole middle name thing (he'd figure it out later), he grudgingly heard Shackleton mention about moving on. Shaking his head that he had no questions, he waited for the lesson to carry on.

Thankful no one had any questions and they could move onto the next part of the lesson, Dominic listened as she spoke of last names. Blinking in attempt to comprehend her question - geez! he really need some sleep or something cause these allergies or whatnot were KILLING him - the fifth year finally understood what she was looking for. Raising his hand, he spoke casually. "Would this number that you speak of regarding surnames be called the 'Family Name Number'?" It made since to him, since surnames were generally family names. Typically speaking at least.

Greingoth was a Slytherin last name, just like her daddy. Anna already knew a good analysis of her father's side of the family...and her mother's at that...but it would be interesting to see what the numbers had to say. Raising her hand, Anna said, "Oh, that's the family name, professor." Anna flipped through her textbook and began reading information about her family name. She wanted to see what she could find out about both the Montez's and the Greingoth. This should be interesting!

Tobi raised a hand, and took a guess, "Wouldn't it make sense if we calculated it like the Growth Number and the way we calculated our Middle Name Number? Finding the Value of every letter in the name and reducing to a single digit or master number?"

Ohhh, erm...finding the family number? Anna hadn't really read that far ahead in her textbook. Fumbling through her book, Anna searched desperately for an answer. Her classmates were already shooting answers off the top of their heads...where had they found all that? Argh...sigh. Maybe it was just like everything else in Arithmancy seemed to be...adding and reducing, adding and reducing. She should just raise her hand and suggest that. "What about adding the numerical values of all the letters and then reducing your sum to a single digit?" Anna suggested. "If that's the case, I'm going to be here forever calculating Greingoth! Why couldn't my last name be...May or something?" she asked, her voice trailing off in the end.

"Would you calculate the family name number by finding the numerical value for each letter in your surname and adding them together, simplifying to a single digit . . . ?"

"All correct. Two points apiece!"
Pausing to tuck her wand into her hair, Professor Shackleton confirmed, "We calculate the Family Name Number by assigning each letter in the surname with the appropriate number, then adding those numbers together and reducing the sum to a single-digit, unless we get a Master Number, in which case we do not reduce. So, can I please have a couple volunteers to help demonstrate to the class the value of this number?"

He was volunteering. YIPES! Too late now. "I'll volunteer," the fifth year commented; she was his head of house after all... he had to be good

Clifford's hand shot into the air and he just about managed to refrain from squealing 'PICK ME! PICK MEEE!' Instead, he cleared he throat and opted with a more.. casual approach. Hogwarts RPG Name: *whistle* | NeeNee Omniscient Omnipotent Pie Maker Tobi would have jumped at the chance, but two things stopped him, first, he'd done the whole Artihmancy Shebang for the Middle Name, and two, if Tobi tried to jump, he'd bang his knees on his desk, and that would hurt.
So he stayed calmly in his seat and scribbled notes, drawing little pies on the boarder. MMMMMmmm Pie.
