Charms Lesson One
 

Callie unlocked the door and flipped the lights on, as she paused to take a look around the classroom. "It's good to be home," she said to herself as she waved her wand and conjured up the objects the students would be using for the days lesson.

"I'll leave them right here for now." Callie thought as she bit her lip, smirking at the objects.

"Hmmm . . . actually, maybe it would be more fun for these guys if I made this a surprise." Callie thought, as she waved her wand once more, and conjured a black sheet that softly fluttered down, laying itself atop the objects.

"Much better " Callie laughed as she made herself a spot on the desk to sit down on, and waited for the first students to arrive.

Asteira walked into the professors class as she had a smile on her face. She was warned it was going to be good and she couldnt wait to see what she had in store for them." hello professor." she said as she moved to take a seat in the front of the class." how are you today?" she put her book on the table as she looked at the professor.

Isabella walked into the classroom and looked for a seat. She preferred sitting close to the front, if for no other reason than to help with her concentration. She saw the professor at the front of the room and smiled.

"Good afternoon professor." she said as she took a seat and prepared for the class to begin.

Emily walked into the class and, to her surprise, saw a strangely-shaped bunch of objects covered by a black cloth. I guess this will be an interesting class period.. she thought wryly.

Allie walked into class. "Hello, Professor!" said Allie.
And took a seat upfront.

Livvy walked into the classrom nervously and glanced around for a seat. "Afternoon professor," she said, as she took a seat near the middle but more towards the front. Livvy set her books down and folded her hands, waiting for class to begin.

Anna made her way into class, fighting the urge to not skip and sing through the front door. My how she loved Professor Hawkins' classes! Ahhh, memories of casting Glisseo! on that house table last term still made her smile!

As she stepped further into the class, she shot a shifty smile up at the Professor. "Good day, professor," Anna greeted, looking down towards the black sheet. Hmm...what lied beneath? She raised her eyebrows at the professor and then headed off to find a seat on the front row.

"I'm doing very well, thank you. You ready for an interesting class?" Callie smiled.

"Good day dear. How are you today?" Callie asked, greeting the young Slytherin.

"Hello dear, it's great to see you today."

"Hello there, and thank you for removing your gum. I didn't want to have to embarrass you by doing that for you." Callie laughed. "How are you today?"

"I'm great thank you. And you?"

Finally Charms had started! Hello, Professor Hawkins. How are you?" she said as she walked in. There was an empty seat over on the other side of the room in the front so she went and sat down and pulled out her notebook ready for anything.

Camira walked into the classroom and looked around. She hadn't met this teacher before so she wasn't sure what to expect. "Hello Professor", she said politely. "I'm really excited to be taking this class". She then walked over to an empty chair and sat down, pulling out a quill in some parchment should she need to take notes.

Noticing that the Charms professor opened up her classroom and had walked in, already being followed by some students. Seth quickly made sure that his Charms textbook was in his messenger bag and walked in for the first Charms class of the new term. Taking a seat up front but not too close. He smiled up at the professor and said, ”Hello, Professor Hawkins.” He nodded his head once at her, pulled out the necessary items from his messenger bag, and set them on his desk. He was ready for class to begin.

Lima entered the class and walked over to Mads. She stood behind him and put her hands over his eyes. "guess who," she said giggling.

Livvy glanced around and saw Camira. "Hey Camira," she said, smiling and waving at the girl that she had met at the Dueling Area. Livvy pulled out a piece of parchment and a quill as she waited for more students to arrive.

Lucas hurried into class. He hated being late for things, but his little legs could only move so fast. He walked into to class and found a seat near the front so he wouldn't be drowned by all the big people.

Slipping into the classroom, Daphne hitched her school bag higher, her free hand struggling with releasing the caught blond waves underneath the strap and shoulder. Having accomplished that, the 12 year old girl let her eyes wander over the table present, a black sheet (or mantle) covering whatever odd shaped objects laid underneath. How pressingly curious.

"Good day, Professor," commented the Gryffindor girl before taking a seat, allowing herself to absorb her surroundings. There were many familiar faces although she couldn't pin a name on most of them; however, Daphne was happy with just being able to recognize facial characteristics. This whole socializing thing wasn't as bad as she initially thought it would be.

Mari entered the classroom feeling a little too excited, much like a first year. She chuckled silently to herself and smiled at the professor. "Hello professor" Some students were already waiting for the class to start. Mari went and sat looking around expectantly.

Isabella smiled at the professor as she pulled out her text book. "I'm doing quite well today. I've been looking forward to this class. How are you doing today professor?"

Who in the? Oh, yeah. The dueling arena girl. She gave a little wave and flashed the girl a smirk. She didn't much have a problem with Ravvies, after all.

Ludo bustled into the Charms classroom afraid he'd be late. Straightening his tie to meet uniform standards, he smiled. "Hello Professor Hawkins. I've been anticipating this class."
He looked around at the students who'd already arrived. Asteira sat at one of the desks. He walked over, setting his stuff down at the adjacent desk. "Asteira! Mari! Hey guys!" he called quietly, but an air of excitement in his voice.
It was then that he noticed the black sheet. "What do you think is under that?" he muttered.

"Hello there. I'm doing great. How are you? Are you ready for class today?"

Callie noticed Anna glancing at the sheet on the desk. "No, you may not remove that yet Anna." Callie teased. "Just in case you were fighting the urge." Callie winked. "Oh and good day to you, too. How are you doing?"

"Hello luv, how are you?" Callie smiled as she greeted the young Hufflepuff.

Callie watched a Hufflepuff boy walk in and immediately roll his eyes and snort. "Is something the matter today that you'd care to share with the class?" Callie glared. She was not going to put up with such rude behavior before the class had even started.

"I'm doing great, how about you?"

"Well I'm glad to hear that, let's just hope you're saying the same thing at the end of class."

Callie nodded, happy to see so many students entering class on time. "Hello dear. How are you?"

"If you'll just be patient," Callie addressed the class, "And we'll wait a few more minutes for our last minute stragglers."

Maddox chuckled and said, "Hmm oh i wonder who that could be." He pulled her hands down and looked up, his head touching her stomach. "Sit down please, before we get into trouble and lose more points." As she sat he kissed her check gently and said, "Good morning my love."





Maddox smiled and said, "Good thank you. And you?"

She gave the professor a nod." Of course i am. Im ready to learn something new." she said as she moved to put her hands together and crack them. she let the professor be as she was talking to all the students that were coming in.

Asteira saw Mari as she gave her a smile. She gave her a small wave as she didnt want to say anything. it seemed that class was going to start soon so she didnt want to get points taken away for talking during class. Wouldnt that be great.

Piper slowly entered the class room, relieved that she was not late, she saw some people she knew, but she opted for a seat near the back. She smiled at the teacher and then took her seat quietly.

Livvy smiled and glanced at Camira. "Hey. Got any other good spells for me to learn?" she asked, referring to their lesson thingy at the Dueling Arena the other day. Livvy hadn't seen Edward around lately, so all she could do was depend on Camira for lessons.

MJ smiled and blushed a little. "I know, I usually don't have gum, but i needed something to keep me awake." she told the professor and smiled. "I am well, and yourself?" she asked her.

MJ's eyes brightened up, she had missed her professor's when she had been at home. They seemed nicer than before and the charms professor didn't ignore her, and the professor seemed to be giving everyone a friendly greeting. MJ's smile continue to grow.


It's good to be back in school, back at home

"Now, now settled down. I know some of you are excited, but need I remind you that this is a classroom. I don't mind the quiet chatter before class starts, but can you please lower your voices or I'll have to ask you to all sit silently while you wait for your classmates."

Dominic was startled when the Professor picked him out and asked him if anything was the matter. Meh? He hadn't done anything wrong by sitting in the back had he? Surely sitting down wasn't a crime around here...

"Me?" said the fourth year quietly. "No, nothing I'd care to share with the rest of the class." except too many girls Weird.

Be patient, right. He could do that.

She laughed at him and gave him a noogie. "It's not my fault that you are so talkative." She sat down beside and stuck her tongue out at him. "So how are you?" she then asked, smiling.

Camira gave a nod. "Find me after class", she said quickly, before class officially started. She wouldn't want to get in trouble for talking.

"I'm excellent, thank you!" Astrid didn't even try to hide the excitement in her voice. She nodded and said, "Oh yes, Professor! This is my absolute favorite class."

"I'm good professor." she smiled. She looked around at how full the class was getting. "Wow this must be a very popular class." she thought

Xehanna walked in the classroom and sat at an empty desk in the middle of the classroom waiting for her friend to appear. she took her backpack off and walked up to the teacher. "Good afternoon Professor. I'm Xehanna. How are you today?" she smiled and shook the professor's hand.

Miranda sat down at one of the desks, she looked around the classroom ''wow every classroom is so differet'' she mumbled to herself. She took out her notebook and quill, waiting excitedly for the class to start ''yay i get to use my wand!'' she grinned

Livvy smiled and nodded her head. "I'll hold you to that," she said and then faced the teacher. She glanced around at the other students and felt a bit lonely once more. But oh well, she'd get over it.

"Well, I trust you can control yourself then. I will not tolerate someone sitting rolling his eyes or snorting in my classroom. I'd would expect that you're more mature than that. I hope you'll prove this to me. I will be watching." Callie said as she clapped her hands and stood up tall, smiling at everyone.

"Welcome to your first Charms class of the term. Before we begin, lets review a bit for those new students who have never taken a charms class before. First off, I think we should start with the definition of a charm. Who can tell me what a charm is?"

Mariska looked over at Ludo as he came to a desk that was somewhat between her and Asteira, and she smiled as he straightened his tie. He was quite energetic, she thought. " Hello," She whispered as she waved to Asteira. She looked up and noted that the professor seemed to be waiting for more students, but Mari still kept her quiet voice. " I don't know, but I'm intrigued," She said, giving Ludo and Asteira a quick little grin.

The lesson then started, and Mari's attention was at the front immediately, her excitement plain to read on her face.

Livvy looked up and smiled. There was Xeh. "Hey Xeh," she said, waving at the girl. She then set her head on top of her desk and thought for a while. Boy, was she tired... and bored.

Seth looked back up at the professor and smiled charmingly. “I’m doing quite well, thank you. And might I just say that you are glowing today, Professor Hawkins,” Seth said, adding in the glowing compliment just for the heck of it. That’s what girls and women liked, right? Compliments? We’ll just have to wait and see about that….

And raising up his arm after he heard Professor Hawkins ask them a question about what a charm was, he stated, “Charms are a type of magical spell concerned with enchanting an object in a way that isn't normal for that object. Like changing a desk into a pig, for example.”

Lucas raised his hand, "Charms is when you give something an unexpected property." he said proudly. He knew that one.

Demetria raised her hand. She didn't know much about charms but she figured she would give it a try. "A charm is like a spell, right? You can bewitch things to do stuff for you I know that."

Rachel smiled and replied, "A charm is a spell used to enchant and object and make it do things it wouldn't normally do." She quickly scribbled down the heading on her parchment and waited for the professor to resume talking.

Ludo looked up, Professor Hawkins telling him to settle down. He blushed but still worked a small smile. "Sorry Professor. Won't happen again."

He raised his hand. "Professor, a Charm is the bewitchment of another object or being. An outside force producing an effect on a human, creature, or inanimate object."

Anna raised her hand and then answered. "Charms are a type of magic spell concerned with enchanting an object to behave in a way that isn't normal for that object."

Class finally started and she watched the professor. Livvy raised her hand reluctantly. "Um... isn't a charm a sort of magical spell that involves enchanting an object to do things that they don't do normally?"

Camira raised her hand. "A charm is a type enchantment that causes an object to behave in a way that is not otherwise normal for that object. A "charm" is a designation for spells that are not classified as Transfiguration"

Allie raised her hand.
"A charm is a type of spell." said Allie. "It envolves enchanting objects to do things that they wouldn't normally do."

Xehanna raised her hand. "A charm is a spell in which you can do certain things to certain objects such as lavitate them or bring them to you without getting up."

He was about to answer her when the teacher started class.



Maddox raised his hand and said, "A charm is like a spell but it cause the object to do a specific thing. " Hoping he would get points.

Miranda looked curiously between Professor Hawkins and the boy she was talking to. The professor seemed upset and Miranda turned away before any of them looked at her, it felt like i was oogling her eyes out.

Miranda sat still and tried to take in what the answer to the professors question.

Dominic nodded and gulped when it appeared this woman had noticed his eye rolling. Nothing gets by this one, he thought, slightly frightened of her.

And then she began the lesson. What a charm is? Merlin, how was he supposed to know? "Isn't a charm like that pendant thing that girls like to where on their wrists or around their neck?" Pfft. Probably not. Oh well.

Vaelle slowly scratched notes onto her parchment, in between looking at the other students.

Isabella raised her hand into the air.

"A charm is a spell one places on an object to make it do something which it would not normally do." she answered, hoping she was somewhat correct.

Miranda tried not to laugh out loud at the boys answer and bit her lip
'' I would probably have said the same thing, what is a charm?'' Miranda had no clue, this magic stuff seems a bit difficult... She started to write down what the other students had said

Piper kept quiet, as she scribbled notes down on her parchment. She was to shy to say anything at the moment, especially with people she knew in the room, what if she got the answer wrong?

Chris Listened to all his classmates answers to the question they all sounded right to him. he raised his hand to answer. "Isnt a charm a magical spell used to make an object do something that you want it to?"

Livvy scribbled down some notes as she looked around and listened to what everyone else was saying. Interesting, yes it was. Livvy waited for the class to move on to something new.

"I'm happy you're intrigued, but how about being intrigued about class please. If you haven't noticed, class has started. Minus 2 points Ravenclaw.

"Ahhh, poor Ravenclaw, you're not off to a very good start here. Another 2 points off. The time for talking is over, please pay attention thank you."

Callie just shook her head and laughed. "Flattery will get you nowhere. Paying attention in class might though. As sweet as you were trying to be, seeing as I took points away from your classmates for chatting, I need to do the same for you. One point from Hufflepuff. Do try to pay attention and earn them back please."

OOC: please do not edit your post, but rather post again to be fair to the other students.

"Yes!! Excellent! Three points to Gryffindor. Charms is all about enchanting objects to make them behave in a way that is not normal for them, such as - as you have told us, casting the summoning charm on an object and making it come to you, rather than walking over to get the object.

"Another good point. Take one point for that. Charms does give objects unexpected properties, like making them fly, making them invisible, cooling hot flames, there are many things we can do to objects through charms."

"Well, yes a charm is a spell, very good. You can indeed bewitch or enchant them. That's another way to put things. One point to Gryffindor."

"Ahhh, yes! We do indeed need incantations in order to cast a charm. Charms is not all about the incantation however, it's also about wand movement and concentration. Take a point for you though for reminding us about the need for an incantation."

"Two points to you! Excellent! Charms can affect humans, creatures, or objects. Although I trust you will not cast a charm on a human. The effects can be very dangerous."

"So to sum it all up for you. A charm enchants an object to make it do something it doesn't normally do, such as levitating an object, or summoning an object to fly to you. This is different from Transfiguration because while it's making it do something unnatural, it's not changing the object completely. For instance a charm would never change a bird into a water goblet. Instead, we might charm the bird to fetch the water goblet. I hope that's clear to everyone."


"You guys are off to a great start. Now that we know what a charm is, who can name some of the basic charms all witches and wizards should know, and what those charms do for us."

OOC: Please only name one charm each so your classmates each have a chance to answer the question fairly. I will ignore any posts that have more than one.

Anna raised her hand. "Accio is the summoning charm. It sends an object right to us. Expelliarmus is the disarming charm. For example, it would cause another person's wand to come right out of their hands and into yours. Lumos and Nox are also common, with Lumos causing light and nox causing darkness," she said.

Livvy winced at what had been done to her. She raised her hand and said, "There's wingardium leviosa, which levitates an object." She folded her hands and wrote down more notes.

Lucas' hand shot in the air again. "There is the lumos charm that lights up the end of your wand. So that if you are afraid of the dark you can have a night light." He said.

Demetria shot up her hand "Lumos lights up your wand so you can see when it's dark!"

Chris raised his name to say a charm "What about the Accio charm? Thats the one that summons an object."

Chris raised his hand. "Protego the Shielding Charm." Chris said.

Xehanna raised her hand. "Lumos is to light up the room or your wand so you can see." xehana smiled. she used this charm alll the time.

Allie raised her hand.
"The Alohomora Char, unlocks locks." said Allie.

Aurora took a deep breathe and recited: "There is the Incendio spell that conjures fire or other Magical Fires"

Demetria shot up her hand. "Lumos makes your wand light up when it's dark!"

"Scourgify will clean surfaces and objects." Isabella said trying to think of one that someone had not yet mentioned.

Anna raised her hand again. "Sorry, Professor. I should have only said one. I'll stick with Accio, the charm that summons an object to us," she said.

Camira raised her hand again. "What about cheering charms. They're used to uplift someone's mood. Quite common during O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. time, from what I've heard."

Lucas wanted to giggle at Anna, she was funny.

Xehanna raised her hand again. "Leviacorpous is to send away. and Anapneo is to clear."

"Engorgio, it enlarges an object." Rachel said, trying to make up for lost points. She wrote down everyone else's answers as well.

Jack raised his hand. "Avifors, It changes small objects into birds" he said.

"Professor can I add another one? There's Point Me, a charm which makes the wand act like a compass," Rachel said, suddenly remembering.

"Excellent! A very basic spell every good witch or wizard should know! Take 2 points!"

"Yes, lumos is a very hand charm to know in case you're ever trapped in the dark. 2 points for you!"

Callie was shocked the Hufflepuff boy was actually paying attention. "Wow, impressive, you do know a little about charms. Aquamenti is indeed a rather basic charm that allows you to shoot water from your wand. 2 points to you.

"The Accio charm? Is there such a charm? Or did you mean the Summoning charm?" Callie teased. "But yes, you're right the Accio summons a charm, a point to you."

"Ahhh, now that's a good one. Some might argue that it's not a basic charm. However, it's imperative everyone know this charm, and you all will learn it soon enough, as well. 2 points for you!"

"Alohomora. A favorite charm of mine during my time at Hogwarts." Callie laughed. 2 points!

"Scourgiy! If only more students knew this one, Hogwarts would be spotless." Callie chuckled. 2 points.

"Locomotor is a great charm, but it's not the easiest of charms to do, so I'm not sure I would consider it basic, but one point to Hufflepuff for sharing a charm."

"It's ok Anna, and yes Accio summons something but it's been said already." Callie smiled, wondering if everything was ok with Anna, it wasn't like her not to pay attention.

"Ferula! A great spell. Again another one that's a bit advanced, but a point to you for sharing your ideas."

"The cheering charm!! I love this charm! Yes, 2 points to you! What a great charm to cheer people up. We could have used it last term huh?" Callie winked.

"Ahhh, the silencing charm. I'm not sure I want everyone to know that one, or you'll be casting it on one another at every turn," Callie teased, but it's another great charm. One point to you!"

"Speaking of today's lesson," Callie smirked "Today we'll be learning the levitation charm. Now some of you have already told us that levitation is one of our basic spells that lifts an object into the air, and they would be correct, of course. But who can tell me why this charm might be very useful to us?"
