DADA Lesson 1 Headmistress Rae-Branxton opened the door to her classroom and flicked her wand to open the windows. A gentle breeze brought in sounds from the grounds, but it was worth the slight distraction. Rae moved to sit on the front of her desk, waiting for her class to arrive. |
Faye walked into class and took a seat in the front row. "Hello, Professor, How are you? My name is Faye, I don't think we've met, I'm a fifth year Transfer from Canada." |
Alicia walked into the classroom. "Hello Professor," she said with a smile and a nod. The young Gryffindor took a seat in the middle of the classroom, taking out her wand, parchment, quill and ink- not really sure what she would need. |
Jenna walked into the class, a bit tired. She didn't get as much sleep as she should have--only about 7 hours or so. At her age, she should be getting nine. "Hello, Professor," she said, half-yawning. "How are you?" I hope I don't fall asleep in class, she thought. Never done that before. |
Aden entered the classroom, taking a seat near the back. Not seeing anyone he recognized, he pulled out his usual mystery novel and immersed himself in reading until the class began. |
"Alright, class. While we wait for the rest of your friends to arrive, I'd like for you to go ahead and get your quill and parchment ready. You should have your wand out and in good working order as well." |
Dani walked in,sat down, and stared taking notes. |

Kennedy entered the classroom just as Professor Rae-Branxton was giving instructions to have a quill and parchment ready. Taking a seat near the front of the class, Kennedy dropped her bag by her ankles and began pulling her supplies from it. She set up her desk neatly and gently laid her peacock-feather quill on top of her parchment. |
Jenna got out her stuff, including her wand, which she hadn't used in ages. The professor said it should be working well, so she tested her wand by using a spell she learned in Transfiguration. "Fabricia Lemon," she said, pointing her wand at her quill. Her quill turned into a lemon for a few seconds, then back into a quill. Works fine, she thought. |
Mallory entered the classroom and sat down in the third row. She took out her stuff to get prepared and waited for the class to start. |
Dani got bored so he said,"stringus wrapus."And soon his wand was wrapped in string. |
Faye unpacked her quills, inks, and parchment rolls, and pulled out her wand, examining it carefully. Satisfied she was ready for class, she sat and waited patiently for class to begin. |
AShley walked in took a seat and got out her parchment and quill. She took her wand out and held it out. Beautiful she said. She had used this wand for 5years so she knew she could rely on it. |
Tae walks in and takes a seat beside two gryffindor girls. He had heard her name was sarah. "Hey I am Tae." He says as he takes his seat. He pulled out some stuff so he could take notes, and his wand. He was excited for class to get started. |
Christian slipped into the class quickly. His face was sweaty, he had ran all the way down the stairs from the seventh floor. He quickly took and seat and took everything he needed out. His cat snoozed in the bottom of his bag, out of sight. He petted the cat softly and let it snooze away for the rest of the class. |
"Excellent. Now, I'd like to start the lesson today with a bit of history. My name is Headmistress Cassandra Rae-Branxton. You may call me Professor Rae. I don't know if you've heard of me... I've been out of the world and working here at Hogwarts for nearly 10 years now. Before I came to work here, I was an Auror, so you can believe I'm trained in the world of Defense. We can start, of course, with the object of this class. Defense... against the Dark Arts. And what, do you believe, are the Dark Arts?" |
Kennedy raised her hand and replied, " The Dark Arts differ from other forms of magic in the intent of the wizard using it. Most magic is relatively neutral. The Dark arts, however, are evil in its intention. Dakr spells are often intended to cause harm to another person. This intention to do harm places that spell into the realm of the Dark Arts." |
Emily made sure her quil nd parchment was out as well as her wand. She smiled and folded her hands on her desk. She lookedup at the professor as she began to talk about herself. She smiled and stayed quiet waiting for the real part of the class to begin. Dark Arts she thought trying to think. |
Mallory raised her hand "those Dark forces that may harm us, professor..." |
The dark arts is magic that is illegal or really bad." Ashley said under her breath not really knowing if that was the correct answer. |
"The Dark Arts are harmful spells that can be used in duels and other things. They are powerful if used by a Dark Wizard, someone who practices the DArk Arts." |
Faye ventured a guess, "The dark arts are a more frowned on kind of magic, even venturing into illegal magic, magic that hurts people, magic for personal gain, and magic that might be considered evil, with ill intentions. also, it deals with dark creatures, such as hinkypunks, dementors, and boggarts." |
Sam waited for the teachers response. Having his things ready he knew he was too late to put in his own reply. |
"Excellent. I can tell I have a bright group this term. Kennedy, your answer really encompasses the spirit of the Dark Arts. Magic that is intended for harm. There are some spells that are neutral that can be used for harm, but it takes a truly malevolent intention to do Dark magic. Five for Ravenclaw. Faye, thank you for mentioning Dark creatures. Five for Gryffindor." She flicked her wand and Kennedy's words appeared on the board. "I'd like to focus our class today on duelling and defensive spells. Afterall, the Duelling Arena is open, and I want us to use proper form and appropriate spells in there. Now... in your opinion, what is the most important spell necessary to defend yourself?" |
Kennedy raised her hand and answered, "Perhaps expelliarmus. If you can disarm your opponent, you can prevent them from attacking you with most spells, unless of course they can perform spells without a wand. In which case, Protego might be more beneficial to create a magical shield." |
Mallory raised her hand "For me I think the most important is the defensive spell with the iincantation Protego" |
Faye raised her hand "Expelliarmus, Professor, it's important to try to difuse a situation before it escalates, if at all possible." |
Clifford sat quietly taking notes as Prfessor Rae spoke to the class. Defence Against the Dark Arts wasn't his strongest subject and he was not confident enough to answer the questions. So instead he sat taken notes, occasionally looking around at his classmates. |
Christian wrote down what was one the board. He thought about her question for a second and answered, "Could it be the shield charm?" He never liked answering questions. For certain reasons. |
Jamie raised his hand. "I don't believe there is necessarily one important spell for defence," he began. "But I do believe there are a few simple spells that come in handy for defending yourself in basic battles. Expelliarmus is one of those -- unwanding your enemy is a quick and easy trick. And it gives you a momentary advantage. Even something like Petrificus Totalus is helpful, because while your opponent is rendered frozen, they cannot do anything to you and again you're at an advantage. Neither really harm the person, just merely give you an upperhand." The boy gave a short nod after his explanation and sat back down. |
Emily wrote the stuff down from the board quickly. She had to choose fast it was either expelliarmus or the stunning spell. She rose her hand. "I would have to say the disarming spell if you can disarm your opponet it would give you time to think of another spell that could actually give you the time toget out of the situation" she said trying hard not to close her eyes. She was not a person to go and stick her hand in the classroom. |
Lu was day dreaming at Zyra's hairstyle, she really wished she had such talent with grooming. Rubbing her eyebrows to focus in class, she raised her hand and thought to participate for a bit "Perhaps disarming your opponent using methods of attacking? For example using the spell 'stupefy'? and perhaps confident use of non-verbal spells?" |
TAe who was writing stopped and raised his hand "Disarming spell" He said, though he wasnt really sure he had the right answer. |
Sam smiled as the Professor introduced herself. He didn't know anybody in the room at the moment but he was planning to. Listening in the back of the class, Sam took a look around him. There weren't many Hufflepuffs in the room and he wondered where they all were. Sam had only transfered to the school this year and he had yet to get to know the twists and turns that Hogwarts held, and he had to know some of these girls... Sam almost slapped himself. Must be puberty....what else would make him think like that? "Ah...The sheild charm, professor, Progreto," Sam said quickly raising his hand trying to get the thought out of his head. Must be puberty... |
Rae nodded her head. "So I have four votes for Expelliarmus, three for Protego, and two who can't make up their mind. That's quite a good turn out, considering those are the first spells we're going to learn today. Let's discuss casting and duelling though. When you're duelling... what do you do FIRST?" |
"Aren't you suppose to bow or something like that?" Joe put her hand in the air |
Emily tapped her chin. "In a duel you take so many spaces apart bow and then start I think" she muttered quietly. She wrote, DUEL on her parchment and wrote stuff down. |
Raising his hand, Jamie said, though rather uncertainly, "You get into stance? Don't you have to face each other and bow to your opponet? And make sure your wand is where you can reach it and pull it out, preferrably in a pocket within your robe or something. You don't want to stick it in your pocket or behind your ear or something like that." |
Kennedy listened as her classmates provided other really good answers to Professor Rae-Branxton's questions. When the class was asked another question, Kennedy's arm shot into the air, "Well in formal dueling, don't you bow to your opponent and then take a certain amount of paces away from them? Although in true battle, such formalities would not likely be upheld." |
Faye thought for a moment, "In a formal duel, you would bow, but if someone where to just attack you, they'd probably skip that step. I think it really depends on how much time you have. Protego if a spell is coming right at you, Expelliarmus, if they haven't cast yet but you know they will." |
"Yes, obviously if this were a real fighting situation, there wouldn't be any bowing or paces. It would be a matter of reaction time. We'll work on that in the Duelling Arena, and perhaps dedicate a class period to it. But for now, we'll discuss the mechanics of a duel." "Joe is right... we do need to bow. That will be five for Ravenclaw. And five more for Emily, because after the bow, you take a predetermined number of paces. We'll say five, because we don't have much room. Spin and get into position. Then cast. I want you all to rise and demonstrate your stance to me." |
Tae stood up to show his stance. He squared his shoulders and his feet were shoulder width apart. He raised his arm to shoulder height. That was his stance. He hoped he was right. |
Mallory got nervous. Although she learned a stable fencing stance, she was unsure if that would be sufficient enough for wand duelling. She stood up and did her fencing stance, but instead of a sword, she held out her wand. She put on her determined face, one hand above her head, another pointing straight ahead. |
Kennedy did as she was told. Spreading her legs shoulder-width apart, with a slight bend in the knee and a sligh turn at the waist. Kennedy held her wand firmly, but not with too tight a grip, just above waist-high. She waited for the professor to give her opinion. |
Jocasta got up. She flipped her bangs to the side hoping they wouldn't get in her eyes druing the rest of the class. She took her wand out of the inside of the robes and grasped onto it more than she usually did. She placed her he dominat foot in front of her left one, hoping the stance was somewhat how they told you to stand for sports in muggle school.s |
Faye stood and took her stance, knees bent, left foot leading, right arm, her wand arm, raised above her head, and leaning slightly forward but not so much that she could pitch over. she gripped her wand firmly, but not too tight, so she could adjust it as needed. |
Christian got up. He didn't exactly remember how to do this. He twirled his wand in his hand nervously. He watched everyone else to see what they were doing. He probably looked pretty dumb just standing there. He got nervous, he know the professor wasn't asking for much, he just had this thing against making himself look like an idiot. |
Emily looked up. "Whoops that must have been loud" she smiled. She was right though. She stood up and held her wand in front of her with her elbow at an angle. She smiled slightly and tucked a stray piece of her curly blonde hair behind her ear. She positioned her legs shoulder width apart and her waist slightly turned. She bit her lip. Was she missing something. She went over what she had read in her head. |
Ray stoud up ready as always to demonstrate his to professor Rae. Ray bowed and took five steps to the back and raised his wand taking the best position he can. |
Daphne stood up and took her wand out. She put her hair behind her ear, and adjusted her feet. She put her feet, one in front of the other. She stood up very straight with her wand arm sticking out. Her other arm was slightly raised, she wasn't sure if this was right, but it felt comfortable. |
"Good... you can plant your feet shoulder-width apart, or you can move one in front of the other. However you stand, make sure your weight is distributed, or you'll fall right over." She pushed on a few elbows and shook her head. "Keep the arms loose, and your posture fluid. Strength and flexibility are key. You can put the other arm in the air as a counter-balance, although I never have. Just don't flail it about. Flourishes will lose you precious seconds." |
ray stood up firmly he raised his wand firmly but not to tough remembering to make an angle not to sharp. |
Sam stood up as soon as the class rose. Okay...now what is this supposed to look like? Oh right....feet like that and wand and yeah....that should be right. Sam stood with his feet apart and his right foot slightly forwards. His arms were held out to help him keep balance, his wand hand forwards and his left hand held rigidly behind him. Sam bent his knees a little and smirked. "That good, Prof?" |
Joe listening to what she was saying. The girl placed her hand just around her waist, making sure that she could easily move if she was vunerable to an attack. Her wieght was even, and feet were planted firmly on the gound-- but she could jump if need be. She thought she was doing good. |
Emily loosened her elbow. That might have been it. She bit her lip and loosened her feet a bit moving side to side making sure that her balance was evenlydistributed. She nodded. okay she felt more ready now than before. |
Tae lowered his arm because it was getting tired. Tae knew his weight was distributed because he took one of the first stance he learned in Taekwondo. The sitting stance. He had hoped it would be corrected, and it seemed to be. He just need to bend his arm a little bit. So he raised his arm back up and bent a little bit at the elbow. Not much but just enough so that his arm wasnt perfectly straight. |
Carolyn stood up. She did as the professor asked, her feet were shoulder-width apart and made sure that her weight was equally distributed. She tried to keep her arms loose and her posture fluid. This wasn't a difficult position. She looked up at the professor, waiting for further instructions. |
"You can either do this next part with a partner or alone, but I want you to each practice bowing and pacing, then getting your wand up as quickly as possible. Taking your time, it's easy to get into your stance, but you need to practice doing it over the course of just a few seconds." ooc: I'm gone for a while. You are welcome to practice the stance, but do NOT cast or you'll lose house points. Please do not chat. |
Ray tried did what the professor asked him to do he tried to distribute his weight, bend his arm a little bit and he raised his arm back uo a littke bit at the elbow |
Joe looked around wondering if she would do it with a partnet or just by herself. The girl decided she would be on her own until someone decided to ask if they could go to gether. Joe bowed towards the wall and counted the five steps away from it. As soon as she it five she turned as quickly as possible and took her stance, pulling out her wand. |
Carolyn looked around, not seeing anyone that would want to practice with her, she decided to do it on her own. Carolyn practiced bowing, and pacing. When she was satisfied, she practiced getting her wand up in position as quick as possible. |
Tae looked around for a partner. He didnt really want to try this alone. He walked up to a ravenclaw named emily. "Hey, Im Tae. Would you be my partner?" He asked her. |
Sam frowned when they were asked to practice their fighting. Who was he supposed to practice with? Sam looked around the room looking for a friendly face. Quote:

Ashley got up from her seat and did as she was told. She paced herself and then bowed. Wow this is soo easy she thought to herself. |

"Sure why not." She took a ellastic headband out of her pocket and put her mess of blond hair back. "I'm Jocasta Houdini... Everyone calls me Joe though." |
Faye made her way to the nearest person about her age, a curly headed sixth-year Ravenclaw, Jamie, she thought his name was. "Hey, I could use a partner for this, what do you think about it?" she asked as non-chalantly as she could manage, hoping her shy squeak wouldn't come through. |
Christian looked around for a partner. He didn't know who to ask, so he started practising by himself. He paced, stance, and wand out quickly. He lost his balance and almost fell to the ground. Flustered, he attempted at trying it again. This time he really lost his balance and fell to his knees. He punched his leg and slowly got up, he couldn't figure out why he was having so much trouble with this. |
Faye looked over in time to see Christian lose his footing, "are you okay?" she asked, stepping over to help him stand. |

Emily smiled. 'nice to mee touy too tae" she said as she took a couple steps backwards and got her stance. "She realized that her legs were stick straight so she quickly corrected herself and smiled at Tae. She looked up and positioned her wand. She wasin a comfortable stance and her weight was distributed well. |
Quote:
"Not bad at all." She put her own smirk on her face. The met up once again., both bowed, five steps, and turn. This time Joe was the quicker one out of the two. |
Christian allowed Faye to help him up. He was a little red and embarrased, so he muttered a 'thank you' and stood straight trying to figure out what he was doing wrong. "Yah, I'm fine," he told Faye. "Just having trouble on trying to concentrate on getting the stance right and having the wand out fast." |

Sarah got up nervously and got herself agood position. She looked around for a good partner. Everyone has seemed tofound one partner. She looked around to see anyone left. |

"Nice," Sam said as she beat him to it. Once again they walked forwards bowed paced back quickly and spun. This time, during the spin Sam tried to get into position, which turned out to be the wrong thing to do because the next thing he knew, he was lying on the floor of the Defence against the Dark Arts classroom. Sam sat up looking a bit dazed, but he still had a almost sheepish smile on his face. "Oops." |
Cora scowled. Why did everyone partner up so quickly?! She twirled her wand between her fingers, and if anyone who she didn't know approached her, she would refuse their offer to be partners. Well.... She just wished Jamie could be her partner. She glanced over at him and smiled. |
Quote:
"Here let me help you out." She walked over to the boy and held her hand out for him to grab. She helpped him up and back onto his feet. "I don't think we are suppose to fall in a duel. It's just a guess but yah know-- just throwing that idea out there." |
Christian followed everything she said, exactly the way she said it. He took his time doing the motion. Finally getting to the end, he stood up straight and looked at Faye, "You want to run through it with me, just so I practise it at a good pace? I could use the help." He smiled cutely. No girl could ever resist the cute smile. |

Antwone got up and worked out his stance. He set back his weight on his back foot, holding his wand out straight and his free hand over his head. |
Quote:
"Okay, I suppose we should start practicing then..." Audrey walked over several steps from where Sarah was already standing, and bowed. Unfortunately, she was rather unflexible and her bow appeared to be more like a hunch. Blushing, she quickly paced 5 steps back (tripping on her robes on the fourth step), but then proceeded to spin and enter her stance with a surprising amount of grace. |

"I wish we could do some spells or something. It's getting a little borng eh?" |
Christian nodded. "On the count of three. 1...2...3.." He paced, went into stance that Faye had told him how to do and the wand out. He lost balance for a millisecond, but quickly regained it. His wand was out at the ready, not quite as fast as Faye, but he was sure that with practise, he would be speedy. He smirked and tilted his head to the side. "That went well." He laughed. |
Ryder looked around the room he was a little nervous for the first lesson. He didn't really know what he was supposed to be doing. He stood up and walked near the corner of the room. He thought about what he had learned. |
"Well done, let's try it again." Faye got pack into the start position and started to count, "One, Two, Three." |
Antwone stood up out of his stance and watch the others practing proper duelling methods. |
Carolyn felt as though she had perfected the speed of raising her wand, so she stood back against a wall and watched others practice. |
Ryder moved a little away from the wall and bowed. He didn't have a partner but he was definitely going to try and do his best without someone there to practice with. He took his steps and pulled out his wand. He thought he did a pretty good job. He put his wand away and moved back to the corner to do it again. |
As Antwone watched the others practice he began withdrawing his wand and placing it back in his pants, conditioning his reflexes. Again and again he stuffed his wand in his robes and withdrew it to attack position. A few times he dropped his wand and blushed whenever anyone looked over to him bending over to retrieve his wand. |

Christian got back into the start position. Faye counted this time. Once she said three, he paced, turned into his stance and had his wand out. Faye still had it out faster, but only buy seconds. Wait, he didn't lose balance! He made sure he was dreaming. Feet on the floor, still standing, pretty much good stance. He smiled. He could hug Faye right now. "I did it! Thanks to your teaching," he added smiling. |

They walked five paces and Joe turned taking her want out of her pocket, letting it slip between her fingers and watch it fly across the room and just miss Sam's head. Joe cheeks turned a bright pink as she looked at the wand. |
Quote:
Sam walked over to the wand and picked it up but as soon as he did the wand flew back to Joe. Sam stared at his hand then Joe. "Non-verbal spell?" Sam asked her softly. It was the only thing he could think of. |
