Headmistress Cassandra Rae had spent far too much time in her old office, watching the house elves fuss at the babies, and no time at all preparing for class. She was finally ready, though, and she opened her classroom with relish. The windows let in the crisp autumn air, and she settled herself at the desk to await any students.

Themea smiled at his fellow Slytherin's comment. She knows that in a fight, you must do what is nessacary. Themea nodded slowly at the professor's comment about not hurting the frail and weak. She was wise, yet, somehow she gave him the opinoin that she could end up underestimating her oppenent and lose the fight, and maybe her life. "Ma'am," Themea said shifting his weight. "I understand not hurting the young or frail, but must we risk underestimating our oppenent?"

Savannah thought about the question for a moment before looking up to Professor Rae.
She quickly raised her hand, "I think i'd try to disarm them, so they couldn't hurt me and then try to get away." Savannah said quietly.

Kerry smiled at the awarding of points but was more impressed by the idea of doing a self inventory. It's something she had never thought of sitting down to do, but this class was certainly making her think about what her own strengths and weaknesses were, for future references. Kerry admitted to herself that she'd never know just when it would come in handy to realize this, but she was certain she would need to know it just the same.

Ariana secretly chided herself for being so slow. She went back to her normal self, taking notes and being quiet, it just wasn't her day. She listened to the others answering the questions and wrote down what they said.

Dinara was furiously jotting down everything that was being said. She had no intentions of failing this class. She also made a mental note to think her answers out more carefully so she could win points for her house.

Megan paused in her note-taking and raised her hand. "So you're saying we should keep a journal of some sorts, Professor?"

"Running is never a stupid option, although screaming is certainly not as effective. Although, to be fair, you can use screaming as a weapon itself. I had a colleague at the Ministry who would always shout while she was dueling. She reached for her wand then and signaled that open discussion was finished. "Let's continue with today's lesson. We've established that we need to approach every situation with clarity and our wits about us. I'd suggest you try to remember that you need to know and measure the following before acting: your surroundings, your opponent, your abilities, and your resources. Only then can you 'S.O.A.R.' through the obstacle. I know, it's cheesy, but write it down to please Mama Rae."

She wrote it on the board: Surroundings. Opponent. Abilities. Resources.

"What do you need to know about your surroundings?"

Megan raised her hand, "Obstacles that may get in your way and you can look for things you can use to protect youself." Megan wrote down the notes after stating her answer.

"It's never a bad idea to make note of your strengths and weaknesses. I have a journal, but I also keep a 'Spell Log' with spells I know, what they do, how they are cast, and other ways I've seen them used. Defensive ways to use non-defensive spells."

Kerry raised her hands, "You need to look around your surroundings. Observe what is there that will aid you or hinder you. Observe what you can use to block things, jump behind things if you need to and even deflect off things. Observe escape areas around you, so you're always aware of that. Also observe who it is that is around you.. do you have many friends or foes around you? Are there any innocent bystanders? This is all important to figure out in order to know what to do in a situation." Kerry said.

Themea nodded slightly at the response. "Firstly, you must understand what is in your surrounding you can use to your disadvantage, and what can be used to help. Secondly, you must always be aware of your footing. I experienced a rather unfortunate experience without knowing my footing. I digress, thirdly, you must becareful of who surrounds you. Innocents must not be harmed due to lack of awareness," he answered twinging when the memory came up.

"I think it is important to know what innocent bystanders are around, how familiar you are with an escape route, what resources are nearby that can be used to your advantage or against you."

Ariana hurrily wrote this down on her piece of parchment, not missing a single thing. She knew this answer hopefully and said as she raised her hand, "You need to know where the exits are, how many people are dueling so if you do run you won't get caught off guard. um...what kind of lighting is around? Um, I think you need to know hif there is any hiding places so you can regroup...I can't think of anything else."

"Professor, you need to know your surroundings well enough to know your means of escape, to know what you may use as a shield, and what may be used as a weapon to trip up your attacker, you should also check to see if there are any muggles around." Cecilia replied.

Vince looked at the professor, quickly taking notes of what she had said. He smiled, seeing the board have four words on it. His eyes glanced at each student as he raised his hand. "You need to know the people and the natural resources. You need to know the people if they are good or not, so you would be careful if they are not Dark Wizards. You need to know the natural resources, to know if it has a good environment, like water and food," he said, guesing.

Atmor raised her hand "Escape routes and obsticles. Also a weak point for your opponent and you need to realise your weak point and avoid them" she wrote down S.O.A.R.

Gazing intently at the board for a moment, Dinara then averted her gaze to her parchment. She quickly re-inked her quill and jotted down "S.O.A.R." She then refocused her attention to the question. Dinara then raised her and and said, "You need to pay attention to escape routes for you and possibly for your opponent. You need to also be aware of any crevasses or areas where possible opponents could be hiding."
Dinara was not sure if this is what the professor was looking for.

"It seems like you'd be looking for anything that might work to your advantage or disadvantage, especially in a duelling situation. You'd need to know if there was something to hide behind, or something to shield you."

"Normally, I would say we should always look for Muggles, but consider whether or not your oponent cares about Muggles. Better you save your own life and a Muggle's life and then Obliviate, rather than you all die." She shrugged.

OOC: I know in this fast paced setting it can be frustrating. Just know that I'm reading it all, and I'm impressed with your answers, even if they overlap someone else's and I don't award points.
