| | | Astronomy Lesson 4 Upon entering the room, the first thing you notice is that instead of planets orbiting the sun around Hazelle's tiny makeshift model, you spy billions of rocks orbiting it in a doughnut shape. They are many sizes and colours.
Hazelle smiles and offers out tea and cookies to all who enter this night. |

Evy raised her hand. "Yes, I believe they are between 300 to 600 million miles from the Sun. The belt is inbetween Mars and Jupiter."

"Which is the first asteroid to be discovered?"

Evy raised her hand. "On January 1st, 1801, the Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi dicovered the first asteroid and named it Ceres. It is the largest asteroid in the belt and was believed to be a planet for many years."

"What else is very unusual about asteroids, but Ceres has?"

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sini Sarah Snider Second Year | Sini raised her hand again, "Professor, Ceres contains approximately a third of the belt's total mass and is in fact spherical, when asteroids are typically irregular shapes with less gravity."

Kat raised her hand, "It is unusual for an asteroid to have such a spherical shape, but Ceres does, causing debate about whether or not it can be considered planet-like."

Hogwarts RPG Name: Casper Scouten Fourth Year | Jeremiah lazily lifted his hand and announced, "Ceres is a sphere, Professor. Most asteroids are just lumpy, irregular shapes."
"And Gaspra is an s-type asteroid that orbits very close to the main asteroid belt." He continued.
OOC: I did edit here, and I believe that that's supposed to make the answer invalid, so if someone else gets the answer, then it's only fair, I suppose, for them to get the points.

Raising her hand, Kat answered," Gaspra is an S-type asteroid, believed to be composed of a mixture of rocky and metallic minerals. It orbits the sun near the inner edge of the main asteroid belt."

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sini Sarah Snider Second Year | Sini knew the answer to this one too! Raising her hand she said, " Gaspra is an S-type asteroid that orbits very close to the inner edge of the main asteroid belt. Named after a spa town in Crimea, Ukraine. It was the first asteroid ever to be closely approached when visited by the Galileo spacecraft, on October 29, 1991."

Hazelle nodded, "Exactly, it's sphereical in shape, which is unusual. 2 points." Quote:

Unsure of her answer, Kat raised her hand and said," The asteroids within the main belt are thought to be remnants of the protoplanetary disc or even remnants of a planet."

Hogwarts RPG Name: Casper Scouten Fourth Year | Jeremiah decided to make an attempt at the more difficult question. While raising his hand once more, he stated, "People believe that the asteroid belt is extremely dense and hard to pass through, due to some very inaccurate muggle movies. In the past, they also used to believe that the asteroids in the belt were the remains of a planet called Phaeton." |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sini Sarah Snider Second Year | Sini was unsure how to answer this one, but attempted it anyway. Raising her hand she said, "People believe the asteroid belt is since dense that adventurous measures must be taken to avoid an impact. In reality the asteroids are spread over such a high volume that it would be highly improbable even to pass close to a random asteroid."

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sini Sarah Snider Second Year | Sini raised her hand, "The Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous - Shoemaker (NEAR Shoemaker), is an unmanned spacecraft designed to study the near-Earth asteroid over a period of a year. It found data on the bulk properties, composition, mineralogy, morphology, internal mass distribution and magnetic field of Eros. This data will be used to help understand the characteristics of asteroids in general, their relationship to meteorites and comets, and the conditions in the early solar system."

Hogwarts RPG Name: Casper Scouten Fourth Year | Jeremiah answered with his hand up, "It showed Eros, an asteroid that goes across Earth's orbit." He was feeling slightly lazy, and hoped the short answer was enough to earn his house a point or two. |

Nikki raises her Hand ' The near NEAR probe controllers were able to successfully touch the craft down on the Eros' rocky surface. This is the first time humans have landed a space vehicle on an asteroid. It has shown us close-up and detailed photos of Eros. Also it has shown us that Eros is not a pile of rubble, but a solid body believed to have been formed many years ago when the solar system was. '

Hogwarts RPG Name: Grace Cail | Phoebe just sat there with her cookie and tea and listened writing down some notes every so often. She didn't know any of the answers. Phoebe made a note on her hand, (though it hurt a little using the quill) to go and read up later on planets and asteroids. For now though, she would just listen. |

She tapped her wand on the chalkboard and the assignment appeared: Quote:
Approximately, how many asteroids have been identified and observed long enough for their orbits and rotational periods to be calulated? (2pts)
What are the 3 types of asteroids, and what are they made of? (3pts)
How far does the main Asteroid belt stretch from the sun? (2pts)
What is the largest asteroid found? (1pt)
Why is Ceres not a typical asteroid? (3pts)
What two groups of Asteroids follow Jupiter's orbit? (2pts)
What do people believe the Asteroid Belt to be? (2pts)
Homework PM'd to me, adorable_lil_thing, no later than Jan 23, 6:00 PM GMT - 6 (central time).
