Professor Fox looked at Jaren for a while, before finally saying, "Mr. Kymers, you have not as of yet told me what I did to deserve this treatment. Rather, you have informed me that because the privacy and rights of you and your peers were violated by people that have no relation to me whatsoever, you thought it perfectly moral to invade my privacy and rights." He sighed and stood up, he was clearly frustrated with Jaren. "Now, Mr. Kymers, I want you to think very carefully about this subject. You are angry at others for violating your rights, yet you were perfectly willing to violate the rights of others. Under what circumstances shall we now decide people are in their rights to violate the rights of others? May I violate your peers' rights and bug your common room? May Ms. Weasley violate your rights, and listen in on conversations you have with your friends, with your grilfriend? This said, give me one good reason I should trust you again." He looked long and dissaprovingly at Jaren. |
A long silence settled before Jaren replied again, still sounding calm. "You asked for a reason behind the invasion of privacy. The reason is that you set foot in Hogwarts at a time when trust between students and any non-senior staff had been broken by the events in the terms before, which is unfortunate. The previous replacement staff managed to perform several crimes right under the student's noses because this privacy of theirs was respected and left unquestioned, and if it had not been breeched, the crimes would have continued unabaited. Those...staff from the Ministry were able to imprison three of our former Professors without clear explaination to the student body as to the nature of the charge, and tortured them. One of our Professors, my former Head of House, died before she could be rescued." There was a slight bite to his words as he said this. "The Daily Prophet does not cover the fact that it was because a student decided to breech that privacy, that the crime was uncovered. If not, the other two professors held hostage would not have been recovered alive." "You may say that I overreacted due to past circumstances, but after several years of similar events like the one I have described...I believe it is safer to err on the side of caution than to give a benefit of a doubt and let the student body fall prey to another attack." "In some Muggle governments there is a...certain piece of legislation. It states that, when the country is in a state of war, or on the brink of an 'insurrection', the privacy and general rights of the citizen are to be forfited so that the government is able to take appropriate measures to resolve the crisis. That is my opinion on privacy--in a critical situation, it may have to be sacrificed in order to ensure public safety." Jaren paused briefly to allow his words to sink in. Speaking that much seemed to have taken quite a bit out of him mentally, even though he looked alert as ever and as calm. "You ask me for one good reason as to why you should trust me again. My answer is that you do not have to. I have never done anything to gain your trust nor do I request it," he finished quietly. |
Professor Fox shook his head, sighing. "That is an excuse Mr. Kymers, not a reason." He sighed, and looked sternly at Jaren, the way a father looks disapprovingly at his children. "Draconian tactics are never acceptable in any classroom, school, or office I have a part in. By anyone. The first person - student, official, death eater, house elf, goblin, or spy - who attacks the rights of me, my colleagues, or my students will find themselves in places wizards haven't even theorized how to get out of. I don't care if Mr. Perry beat you with a steel club until your legs were jelly and your spine was dust. You show who you are based on your actions; and based on your actions Jaren Kymers you are exactly the same as Mr. Perry. "Insofar as you your actions have dictated, you will be serving detention with me. During which time, you will contemplate all possible meanings of the phrase, 'becoming your own worst enemy.' Also, I will be writing your parents or guardians. Now, how many other professors did you spy on?" |
Jaren had expected no less a punishment, and displayed no surprise whatsoever at the verdict, nor the berating that came before. Good luck to Professor Fox, however, on contacting any parents or guardians of the Slytherin prefect, as the former had ceased to exist fifteen years ago and the latter had disowned him. As it stood, there was nobody in the contact slot of his school record. "So far as this term has run, just you, Professor. I suppose I'll be meeting you in the detention hall tonight?" |

"It is enough for me to say that you did, unfortunately," Jaren replied shortly but keeping his voice civil. |
"Mr. Kymers, I asked what I did to warrant such attention from you. Considering none of my fellow colleagues garnered such attention from you, I think it a fair question. Please don't make me repeat it." He said, putting his glasses back on. |
"The honest answer is that I only have so many mirrors," Jaren replied shortly in a quiet voice. Tension was beginning to build in the small room, though Jaren fought to keep his calm facade up with good results. |
Professor Fox shook his head sadly. "Very well Mr. Kymers, report to detention. We will talk more on the subject there. Also, consider this a notice, you are suspended from the Experimental Device club until further notice." He waved his hand casually and the door to his office opened. |
Jaren nodded only once and got up, sweeping out of the Office without another moment's delay. |
:: Ganymede stood for a few seconds at the door before giving a knock. She tapped her fingers against her leg nervously, waiting for an answer. :: |
Professor Fox looked up and sighed. "Yes, please come in." The door slowly opened. |
:: Ganymede wasn't sure Professor Fox had yet heard that she was the one who was spying on him. She cautiously walked in, her empty school bag on her shoulder. She saw that Jaren had left already. Her hopes sank a bit. "Hello Professor", she said rather uneasily. She waited to see if he wanted her to sit down. If he has no clue.. then I think I'll run as fast as I can to the RoR. I need to talk to Nadia. I hope Jaren is alright. I wonder why he isn't in Fox's office still? She thought as she stood there. :: |
Professor Fox examined Ganymede. "Yes Ms. Craft, what can I do for you? How is the book coming along?" |
:: She gave a small smile, Dear Merlin! I don't think he knows! she thought rather relieved. "Yes, the book. It was marvelous." She said with a dramatic wave of her wand. "Well Sir, I think I'll go work on some of my lessons." She explained as she gave a small nod goodbye. "Thank you again." She slowly turned around nonchalantly and headed for the door. :: |
Professor Fox nodded politely to her as she left. No sooner had she done so, than he recieved an owl. Pulling out the letter, he examined it carefully, then he looked up at the door, somewhat perturbed. |
