Nadia's eyebrows raised slightly. "That's what I meant to tell, professor. Anti-jinx jinxes are jinxes suppossedly used by defense but, depending on the context, it should be considered an offensive spell. So, in the case of Stupefy, it's a jinx but suppossedly used by defense. Hence, it could be considered an agressive-defense spell. Or, an anti-jinx."

"You would probably have to determine if the spell protects the individual from harm. Expelliarmus enables the caster to disarm their attacker. The shield charm (Protego) create an invisible barrier which will protect the caster from any spells except the unforgiveable spells, and Pretricus Totalus and Stupefy will render your attacker immobile. All these charms will protect the caster from harm. Jinxes like the Tarantallegra Jinx and the Jelly-Leg Jinx will make it difficult for your attacker to fight, but he will still be able to use his wand, so I don't know if they can be considered true defensive spells. They are a means of defending oneself, but they will not totally protect one from harm. There is such a thing as a defensive spell which is suppose to protect the caster from harm. Very little is known about this spell. Fulbert the Fearless died in 1097 when the defensive charm he was using to defend himself backfired."

A defensive spell is really any spell that serves to keep you from being hurt by someone else. I think that we could start to think outside the box and see that a lot of spells that don't strictly fall into this catagory will fit our criteria... but we'll leave that fun exercise for later. What I want to know is... can anyone think of a spell that is PURELY defensive? A spell that has no offensive purpose?"

"Would or could Silencio be used as a purely defensive spell? It silences a person, but doesn't harm them, and if they are not an Unspeakable, then they should be able to cast any spells until the spell wears off."

"Yes... protego was the spell I was thinking of," Rae nodded first at Jaren and then at the others who suggested it. "Although... some might argue that since it repels the spell back at the caster... it could be aggressive. However, that isn't it's main purpose. The same goes for Expelliarmus, although that spell is much more likely to cause some bodily harm or physical affect, as people are often knocked off their feet from a powerful Expelliarmus." She paused for any reactions.
