SPOILERS for both HBP and DH, movies and books. There were a lot of elements left out of or changed from the book to the movie. Some were minor or had to do simply with artistic choices. But there were some decisions that really made me wonder how they are going to explain this or that in Deathly Hallows - especially since the last is split into two parts and they will try to include as much as possible from the book. This doesn't seem possible since most of the events in the book were set up before. So these are some things that really had me scratching my head in the HBP: - In The Order of the Phoenix they left out what the prophesy truly means (along with Harry's temper-tantrum). Then in this movie he's suddenly the chosen one without any explanation (and once again, they left out that beautiful scene between Dumbledore and Harry where Dumbledore explains more about the prophesy so Harry can walk into the fight with his head held high, and how he's only the chosen one because Voldemort made it so). So now they leave out pretty much all of the information about Horcruxes! Correct me if I'm wrong, but finding out about Voldemort's past and what his Horcruxes may be was the most important fact leading into the last book. From reading, we know there are supposed to be 6 Horcruxes and the final bit of soul in Voldemort's body. We learned he collect trophies and wanted powerful objects. We learn about the ring, locket, cup, diary, and snake, and how the last one is either something of Ravenclaw's or Gryffindor's. We learn NONE of that in the movie! So now we go into the final movie(s) not knowing anything about these objects, and we have a whole new set of objects yet to learn about with the Deathly Hallows. I mean we as being the general audience who hasn't read the books. The filmmakers can't just assume that everyone has and people like me will just fill in the blanks! How is Harry supposed to learn about these objects in the movie with Dumbledore being dead? They'll have to have Harry learn about the Horcruxes himself, which will waste time and not fit in with his character. It would've been easier to include the memories of Hokey, Morfin, and Dumbledore's of Voldemort looking for the teaching job and make the movie 2 hours and 50 minutes instead. This would've pleased the fans and made the movie make more sense. - The whole goal of Draco was to fix the vanishing cabinet in order to sneak the Death Eaters into the castle. In the book this was because there were always teachers and aurors patrolling the castle and Draco needed help overcoming them, along with Dumbledore. Then as we know, the fight breaks out in the book. As they all scramble to leave, it makes sense that they run out to the grounds in order to apparate (it's said that the order blocked the cabinet). In the movie, they all quietly enter the castle, the business happens on the tower, then they slowly leave the castle. Bellatrix (who wasn't even supposed to be in this scene) randomly blows out some windows. My question is: what was the point of the Death Eaters in the movie? They didn't do anything except walk in and walk out! So why base the whole plot around Draco trying to sneak them in? Cutting out the battle and the Death Eater's intense escape made the scene boring and a little pointless. And why wouldn't they just leave through the cabinet in the movie? It wasn't destroyed or blocked off by the order like in the book, so why take a stroll through the castle, the woods, and out of the grounds? Silly. - Also, they changed how Dumbledore got disarmed. In the book, he decides to immoblize Harry in order to save him, and in that split second Draco disarmed him. This is very important to DH because it was the whole "Flaw in the Plan" thing. Draco truly became the master of that wand. It wasn't what Dumbledore planned to be disarmed by him (even if it did work out in Harry's favor). So why would he just stand there and let Draco disarm him when he had a plan to die unbeaten? It's a minor change that has a major effect on the idea behind wandlore. I'm not sure why they decided to mess with that. - The Seer Overheard. One of the most complex aspects of the series is Snape. Cutting out the fact that it was him who overheard the prophesy and sent Voldemort after Lily and James was a bad idea. To Harry and the audience it made Snape look more like the bad guy. Later, it shows the reason why he turned over to the good side. In the next movie, it'll seem way out of left-field when Snape's feelings for Lily are shown. This will also be because they cut out Snape calling her a Mudblood in OotP, and also Petunia talking about that boy. The Dursleys have really gotten the shaft in the last 3 movies. Where are they? The Peck of Owls scene was great in the OotP book, but was all but cut out in that movie. In this book we learn that Harry has had to stay there because of the blood protection, and that it breaks once he turns 17. It was important to know that for the beginning of DH. They took the time to show that weird scene between the waitress and Harry, but couldn't have the Dursleys? And what was up with that waitress? It was a muggle diner at the underground station and she seemed like a muggle to me, yet she knew who Harry Potter was? How about small things like not including Mundungus Fletcher who was stealing Black heirlooms? The whole thing with Dung stealing the locket and Umbridge confiscating it will also seem weird now in DH. Or not including any of the other Weasleys? Does this mean there is no estrangement with Percy in the series and therefore no making up at the end? These are just a few problems I had, with the main one being the lack of knowledge given to the audience about the Horcruxes and the fact that Harry had a good idea what they were before setting out. Other things like lacking Dumbledore's funeral, the repressed Astronomy tower scene, the changes to Ginny's and Harry's relationship, the part on the stairs with Harry and Hermione whining in super-melodrama mode, and so on are things I can overlook. Also, what was up with the Burrow attack scene? The Burrow was supposed to have protection from both the Order and the Ministry, meaning no Death Eater or even Voldemort himself could apparate in there or even walk in there. So if the bad guys knew where Harry was, why didn't Voldemort himself along with all of his best Death Eaters just attack then? That scene felt really tacked on, obviously just to increase the pace when it was slowing. But it was really illogical and there was no point to it. Overall, as a movie, I thought it was pretty good. The comedy aspects were great, as were the acting, cinematography, and effects. If I never read the books, maybe I'd see the movie differently. So it may be my fault that I can't see one without the other. What do you think? Are there any crucial things missing from the movie that will be hard to show in the last movie? |
okay so i can't say that this was my favorite but it was the funniest of them all.the funniest part was when ron ate the chocolates and was in love with Romilda. But they have cut out lots of scenes especially the memories that dumbledore showed Harry so how are they gonna make the seventh part without mentioning Voldemort's past? And they burnt down the Burrow! what was the point of doing that? And the scene that annoyed me the most was when ginny was tying Harry's shoe laces i mean c'mon that's not like Ginny at all. Also what's with Harry? he's all happy and smiley and cracking jokes like everything's fine. Sirius just died and he has to kill Voldemort but it looks like he dosen't care at all. So out of five i'll rate it 2. :) |
I guess I'm going to be the lone wolf here. Before I start let me first say that I love the books. They are the HP gospel, I guess I can say. Fortunately, for the purposes of this thread I'm not reviewing the book so I'm in the clear when I say what it is I'm going to say. First of all, I go to movies to be entertained. I was entertained through the whole movie. If I go to a HP movie with the book in mind, I've just wasted $8 and two and a half hours of my time. Hence the reason, I forget the books before I go and watch a movie. A movie that brings my favorite world to life. Accurate or not, I don't care. The movie was funny, scary, dramatic...everything a good movie should be. Second, threads like this crack me up. For the last several movies people gripe and complain about how the movies aren't an actual depiction of the books. And every time someone says something to the effect of, I'm not going to watch the movies ever again. Yet, some of those same people will go out and buy the DVD and will, if fact, go see the movie when the next one comes out. My dear friends, it's a movie. What's wrong with tweaking a little if it tells the same flippin' story and gets to the same conclusion? As far as a review which is the point of this post. I loved it! I understand (after I got home and reflected) why things were cut and why things were done a certain way. Movie making has to suck. Restrictions are put on the directors, writers, and producers. If given their job, I don't think we could have done much better. The acting was amazing in this movie. Tom Felton was brilliant. I really just wanted to give him a hug. Ron and the love potion scene was hilarious. I was happy he got more camera time. The two actors that they got to play young Voldy looked alike. It was believable that the little one we saw would grow up to look like the older one. I thought the end was fitting. Yeah, yeah, there was no funeral but what was done was good, I thought. And it did just...end. There was really no conclusion in the book, if we think about it. It led perfectly into the 7th book and the movie did the same thing...lead us into the final two movies. We didn't read the books in two and half hours. And we can’t expect them to put in every detail that we want into a movie. If that’s what you want I would recommend just getting the book on tape. At least there you have a voice to listen to and they don’t take anything out. I thought out of all the movies since Chamber of Secrets, this was the better of the book adaptations. And we have to remember, I'm sure JK had to give this some kind of approval. If there was something that was totally wrong, I'm sure she let someone know. A part of us feels like we own this series. Lest we forget who really does and if she likes it, I respect her opinion. I give this movie a 5/5. I loved it!!! It was absolutely amazing! |
Yep I did love the movie, it was good though I had wished to see more of Snape too. In the scene in the tower, I had thought (haven't read this in a while and I forget ) that Harry had been bound up a a spell so he couldn't move. I hadn't expected the finger to the lip business to Harry from Snape. I also expected the death scene would be more awful than it was, it was over pretty quick.. Also waited for Snape to say Don't call me coward!! Snape did a wonderful job with his role.. Malfoy did pretty well too, but I'm highly prejudiced about ALan Rickman. I love the scene at the joke shop, what a fun place..It was very humorous which was a good comic relief. I too liked the effects at the MIllenium bridge, I guess because I recognized it from a LOndon visit several years ago.. I do hope to see the movie again.. Never get enough of Snape:snape2: |
spoilers! this is out of order but sorry i hated: -ginny and harry didn't break up at the end -Sirius's will wasn't at the begining -they missed a bunch of IMPORTANT voldemort's past -the dark mark in the sky wasn't green -harry didn't have a full body frezee on him when dumbledore was talking to draco and dying. so instead he just stood there staring and not doing anything. -when snape was standing next to harry below everyone else who was going to kill dumbledore that's kinda all but they missed a lot. i think david yates is trying to make clear to the people who don't read the books. but come on! almost everybody who goes to see the movie have read the books. a few people havn't but if they don't understand cause they didn't read the books then that's their fault! david yates just messed it up |
I've seen the movie twice now and I thought it was a good movie. As a book adaption it was ok. For fans that went to be entertained this is probably the best hp movie. For fans hoping for a movie version of the book this was a disappointment. I thought the acting was the best of the six movies. I've always liked Emma's acting and Rupert was hilarious during the love potion scene. Dan has come a long way and his acting was well done in this one, especially during the felix felicis scene. Tom Felton was perfect and his acting was convincing. The bathroom scene really showed how much pressure and despair he felt. I liked Alan Rickman as Snape, but there wasn't enough of him. I though Jim Broadbent made a perfect Slughorn. He was exactly the way I imagined him. Jessie Cave was perfectly cast as Lavender and I loved the Ron/Hermione/Lavender/Cormac thing. Bonnie Wright could have been better, but to be fair the script Kloovs wrote for her was terrible. The screen play definitely could have been better. Kloovs should be fired. I really noticed it during the RoR scene when Harry and Ginny... well mostly Ginny... hide the potions book. The movie was poorly put together and was very unpredictable. If you haven't read the book the movie will be difficult to follow. I realize that of all the books this one is the most unpredictable because you have no idea where the story is going, but as least JK made it clear that the most important thing in the book was Harry and Dumbledore exploring Tom Riddle's past, but in the movie you only see two memories, the orphanage and the horcruxes. IMHO they needed to add the memory of Voldemort visiting the old lady and seeing the cup and the locket. This would accomplish two things. First it would impress upon the audience that the real reason this is an important part of the hp series is that we are learning about Voldy's past and it would give the movie more of a plot line. Second it shows us two horcruxes. At the end of the movie all Harry knows is that there are four more horcruxes out there. He knows one is a locket, but he has no idea what the rest are let alone where they are because they stupidly decided to cut out most of Dumbledore's discussions with Harry. Then at least Harry would be able to say "I think one of the horcruxes is a cup because Voldemort took a fancy to one." Then he would only need to guess about two horcruxes instead of three. I don't know how they plan to fix this problem. I thought the Burrow scene was unnecessary. I understand why they did it but I think there were better ways to do it that were closer to the book. I liked how funny the movie is, and I think it's good that it's funny because it's in between the two darkest stories of the hp series. One thing I did like better in the movie than the book was the Harry/Hermione relationship. They have finally made it clear that she likes Ron and they give her and Harry some common ground. Even though it may not seem like it, I did enjoy the movie and I would give it a 7.5/10 as a movie. As a book adaption a 5/10. |
I saw this with my friends on the 15th and loved it :D. But, why did they burn down the Burrow?! Don't the Order go to the Burrow after picking up Harry in the beginning of DH?! Anyways, I laughed out loud when Harry said that he was "taking someone cool to Slughorn's Christmas Party" and he takes... Luna! Cormac was arrogant, but too cute! And Blaise was... :eyebrows:. ... My friend Hilary always thought that Tom Felton was ugly, but at the start of the film she leaned over to me and said, "Draco got hot!" :lol  At the end, my friend Kerri cried for Dumbledore and Hilary teared up. Not to be unemotional, but they never read HBP so I wasn't as shocked as they were during some scenes. At the end of the film, on the tower with the trio, did anyone notice Ron's shoes! Adorable! :D Also, Tonks looks different... I mean, it's not bad, but the OOTP look was a little better. And when Hermione was talking about her dad's hand being bit b/c he's a dentist, she looked so awkward! In a good way, though! :P And Weasley's Wizard Wheezes was great! :pfd: I also wish they would have given Fenrir a little bit of a bigger role. Anywhooo, I give it an overall thumbs up; one of the best films! :) |
BEWARE: This is a novel post. Consider yourself warned. =P After seeing Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in theaters twice now, I suppose that I have the film fresh enough in my mind to give a review on it. :D As the sixth Harry Potter book is my favorite book out of the entire series, I was really looking forward to seeing what they would do for the film. Would they do the book justice? How much will they cut? How many new scenes are they going to add that aren’t in the book? What will they change of what they have from the books? Will I be disappointed? All of these questions were answered each time I went to see the film. Even though the film is pretty different from the book in more ways than one, I actually enjoyed the film the best out of all the Harry Potter films that have been made so far. Of course, there were a few things that were/weren’t in the film that I didn’t like, but there was so much more from the film that I enjoyed. SPOILER!!: And pincers. Tsk, tsk, tsk. |
Overall, I liked this movie. I thought it was the best out of the bunch. However, a lot of things were left out. I hated: *The Ginny and Harry relationship. It was nothing like in the book. Doing up Harry's shoelaces? Where did they get that from? They didn't breakup at the end either. The whole Ginny/Harry thing is going to be messed up in the next two movies. *How it started off. Okay so the Dumbledore/Harry scene in the beginning was alright. It should have started off at the Dursley's home. However, I did like the whole Harry meets a girl thing. "I have to admit, she was very pretty." Michael Gambom seemed to embrace the fact that Dumbledore was gay alittle more(which i liked). *The lack of Snape scenes. This movie is entitled the Half Blood Prince. So why is he hardly in the movie??? They left out the scene where he teaches D.A.D.A. This scene is supposed to be Harry's worst nightmare. They should have put it in! *The ending. It was all a bit abrupt. It looked like they ran out of time and/or money to film a proper ending. The trio is staring out a window and then poof that's it! Go to black screen. Dumbledore deserved a funeral! Poor guy..they just left his body where it fell? *The Dark Mark. Okay I've read every book and in every book they say the dark mark is green right? Am I colour blind, or is it gray and made up of clouds in this film? They shuold get the facts right before filming! *The Snape/Harry end scene. It was fast! Snape didn't even get to say his famous lines! Ugh...they didn't find out that Snape was a true Half Blood. No newspaper no nothing. I liked: *Some out of the blue scenes. David Yates did an okay job with the scenes that were never in the book. Like Slughorn's party fro instance, the Cormac throwing up on Snape's shoes scene was brilliant! It's scenes like this one that add a little comedy to a darker movie. *Michael Gambon embracing Dumbledore's gay side. Gambon did a great job in this film! He liked knitting patterns and called a girl pretty. That sounds like Dumbledore. He seemed as though Dumbledore's age really was getting to him. He sounded a little "off" sometimes. Just the way he spoke showed Dumbledore really was getting old and he wouldn't be around for much longer. *The little funny scenes. When Harry and Dumbledore find Slughorn and turn him back into a person, I noticed that half of his body was still a chair. I like to see little humourous things like this in a movie. Or when Seamus is trying to make a potion and it blow up in his face like it did in the first movie. It made me think back to the very first movie and how far they have come. *My very favorite scene was when the staff and students gather around Dumbledore's body. They all raised their wands and got rid of the dark mark together. it made me want to raise my wand(if i had one) too. It shows that united, they can get defeat Voldemort and the Death Eaters. This may have been a sad scene, but for me it was the scene that I will remember forever. I rather liked the darkness and the angst of this film. For me, David Yates did a great job with the timing and the effects. He has got something to live up to now. Hopefully, we won't be disappointed with the next round of Potter films! |
I loved the movie but I didn't like how they left out memories that I wanted to see. I loved how it was funnier the most of the other movies. There was a scene they didn't have at the end that I was waiting for I really wanted to see Dumbledore's Funeral! What I hated was the whole Harry and Ginny thing Harry starts to like Ginny in the begining and not over time! |
(although no one will read this) The movie was absolutely brilliant. I love as well how they showed more of Draco's side I love the different effects the movie gave. It was very emotional, emma made me cry when she was crying. And i cried when dan cries too hah. Even luna cried too sweet. very emotional and overall beautiful and funny. watching Lavender was fun too. I love all teh characters veins xD they have never showed such well graphics of their faces before. it looks magnificent up close. especially tom ^_^ I wish bellatrix would of gotten more in this movie but she will next film. |
I saw it on the first day, and not the midnight showing:( But it was was worth the wait. I loved it. It was fantastic. Slughorn was amazing, and Draco and Snape, stepped it up a lot, where I was in love with there character. And Ron, Hermione and Harry, just did amazing as well, like usual. The movie was awesome, even if some parts were left out.:voldie1: |

The movie was brilliant and i like it , but i think it could have been thousand times more brilliant .. honestly i can't add more than what unicornkeeper07 said , but want to say that the most annoying things were that there wasn't much about Voldy's past , and what makes things worse that there wasn't much about the half-blood prince ,, i expected the moment when Snape tells Harry that he's the prince it'd be a very Dramatic moment but it wasn't  plus that Dumbeldore's death wasn't convincing ,, he didn't really beg for his life . Luna and Draco were the best :D and Neville didn't appear too much:( what do you think ? |
I can't understand why some people think this was the best movie. It wasn't horrible but it was nothing like the book. I understand it's always difficult to adapt a book and make it a movie, but it is called Half-Blood Prince for a reason. There should have been a lot more scenes of snape and his past as well as Voldemort's. |
I can't really make up my mind as to whether I like or dislike the movie. On the main dislike points there is :-Harry and Ginny's relationship. This is supposed to be one of the main parts of the entire story, and what happens... They are lucky to have a kiss that lasts longer than two seconds. Ron got more action in this movie. :- The ending was abit poor. I was really looking forward to a good battle scene but got a few Deatheaters walking through Hogwarts as if they owned the place. Also, a small cross fire between Harry and Snape. :- AND Dumbledore's funeral was a main part of the entire story as that marked the beginning of the main fight for Harry. It was the pivotal point in the story that Harry decided to go and hunt for the horcruxes instead of finish school and than go. The parts I liked the most were :- Poor Ron's experence with the love potion. What a total hoot. :- Aragog's funeral was quite good also. :- The scene after the funeral when Hagrid and Slughorn were drinking and talking was very good also. :- Harry's infatuation with Ginny and the awaking of his feelings for her. When I really think about it, the good points of the movie DO out weigh the bad points. So I would probably rate the movie as a 7 out of 10. |
^I agree. The ending was poor and the whole Harry and Ginny relationship and Dumbledore's funeral. He deserves respect in the books and movies. Well, the whole black and white thing was a little freaky. But they did leave out important parts. The battle, Dumbledore's funeral and stuff like that. They also started the movie off a little wierd with all the cameras flashing but it was like a string being tied on another string because of the location and all. This movie was really great and I hope everyone can get the DvD if they want it(like i do). I'd say about a 6 or 6 1/2 would fit the rank there. |
I think that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was amazing, it was nice to see Draco have a bigger role. The parts i liked best were
|
I would give 4.5/5 there were some things I didn't like and some things that were missing. But my idea is that Warner Bros and J.K. Rowling should sell the rights to the book to abc or nbc or cbs and they should make a TV show about Harry Potter. Every book can be a new season(they'll have 7 ) or they can have even more seasons. This will mean that they can continue withe the franchise too, and there's no doubt that the tv show will be one of the most successful tv shows on Earth :D |

This movie is my favourite so far. Just liked to start off by saying that. SPOILER!!: review So, this movie brought forward a lot of new topics, and continued what had been established in films 1-5, and in my opinion, did the book justice. 5 stars for me. |
It was a great movie. but they left a LOT of stuff in the book!:( they showed draco a lot!:) i watched it three times already. i watched one of them in chinese verion which made me wanna puke. |
10.5 out of 10! This is my all time favorite HP movie! They left almost all of the stuff in from the book! GREAT acting and directing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very funny too! It is absolutely amazing! And Tom felton did OUTSTANDING in it!!! Love the end with the cave scene and the dumbledore scene! But seriously, i can't find one thing wrong to say about it! It really gets you into the whole mood the voldemort taking power and such. Great opening scene!!! |
