In The Fire Forged - Sa13+

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...in/GGANom2.gif
This is set during Severus Snape's reign as Headmaster of Hogwarts.

Neville Longbottom has returned to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry but this time, Harry, Ron and Hermione are not with him and he must face the coming Darkness alone.
Forged in the fires of adversity, tempered by love, Neville will become a sword ready to be wielded at the appointed hour...

Neville Longbottom sat brooding in an armchair by the fire in the Gryffindor Common Room, watching the flames leap and dance in the grate without really seeing them. Memories of his first year here played out in his mind.

"There's no need to tell me I'm not brave enough to be in Gryffindor. Malfoy has already done that." he had said after Hermione had released him from the leg-locking curse.

"You're worth twelve of Malfoy." Harry had said, and though he had not been quite able to bring himself to believe that, for the first time he had felt as though he truly belonged. Until that point, he had been sure the Sorting Hat had made a terrible mistake. He knew he owed Harry Potter much, not least of all, his allegiance. He had come back to Hogwarts this year prepared to fight at Harry's side, but Harry had not returned and Neville felt somewhat lost.

"Now what do we do?" Neville asked himself, but the flames held no answers hidden in their depths.

One thing was certain, he must act. With Harry gone there was no one to lead the D.A. and Neville felt that, now more then ever before, they must prepare to defend themselves. War was upon them, he was sure of it. The only question was what was he prepared to do about it?

Neville pulled a coin out of a pocket in his robes and absently flipped it between his fingers. He would call a meeting of the D.A. He didn't know if anyone would show up, but it was a start.

Return to the Room of Requirement

Neville paced the Room of Requirement, nervously awaiting the arrival of...who? Who would respond to his summons? He had sent a message via Hermione's Galleons that the D.A. would meet tonight in the Room of Requirement. Since then, he had not dared to so much as meet the eye of any D.A. members for fear of giving anything away to the Carrows or the Slytherins. He had no idea if anyone would even risk showing up.

Neville whirled around at the sound of the door opening. Luna peered around the door, then hurried in. She looked gaunt and even paler than usual, if that were possible. Her blue eyes looked even larger and he could tell she had lost weight. They all had.

"I didn't see anyone in the passageway. I don't think anyone saw me come here," Luna said, looking around at the Room. It looked just as it had before, with piles of large cushions and shelves of books on Defensive Magic, "Am I the first to arrive?" she asked, turning her attention back to him.

"The only one, I'm afraid." Neville sighed. Luna crossed the room to him and laid her hand gently on his arm.

"I am certain I am just the first. Don't worry, Neville, others will come." Luna said and smiled up at him.

Neville smiled back, but he was not quite as confident as she. Without Harry here to lead them, the others might not be willing to risk getting caught. The consequences this time were far greater. The Carrows made Umbridge look like a loving angel of mercy. He shuddered at the thought of what they might do.

"Oh, don't worry so..." Luna stopped and turned as the door opened once more.

"Sorry I'm late. I ran into a couple of Slytherins on my way here, " said Ginny, then raised a hand as they both started in alarm, "Don't worry, I made short work of them both. They won't remember a thing when they wake up."

Neville gave her a lopsided grin. He should have known. No Slytherin--no student in any House for that matter--was a match for Ginny Weasley.

One by one, more members appeared. Seamus Finnigan and Terry Boot were the next to appear, followed by the Patil Twins and Lavender Brown. In all, there were a dozen members present when Neville decided they had waited as long as they dared and needed to begin. Michael Corner and Ernie McMillan were talking earnestly in a corner, and the girls were huddled together on the other side of the room whispering and eyeing him but they all fell silent when he stepped to the center of the room.

"I'm sure you've all noticed that Harry, Ron and Hermione did not return to Hogwarts this year." Neville said. At this, everyone began talking at once, asking him questions and announcing their own theories to anyone who would listen. Only Ginny remained silent.

Neville tried to shout over the noise for everyone to settle down, but no one was paying attention to him any longer. For weeks they had lived in fear of retribution for even mentioning Harry Potter's name. This was the first time anyone had been able to speak freely since returning to Hogwarts. No amount of shouting on his part was going to stop them now.

An ear-splitting whistle pierced the air and the room abruptly fell into silence. Luna's soft voice piped up. "Thank you, everyone for coming. I think Neville would like to start the meeting now."
Everyone turned to look at Neville and Luna gave him an encouraging smile.

Neville goggled at her for a moment, then stammered, "Um, y-y-yes, Luna, thank you..."

Oh, Neville you adorable thing. Could you make me love you more? I think not. Though, Kelly is doing a darn fine job.

Lovely FF, Kellybear! I'm definitely going to have to see how this turns out. Wait, wait, is this N/L? :D

Ok, normally, I don't post comments in my own fanfic but Cheeky calls for an exception. Um, actually, you ain't seen nothing yet, honey, I have great plans for that boy and in this one he is kind of a ladies man. I have to go a bit off-canon, but hey, he rocks, so he's worth it. I am really surprised and gratified to have readers so quickly, and I am in the middle of working on my next post. I rescheduled an appt so I could stay home today and finish it, but then a hail storm hit so you know it has to be fate cuz I couldn't have gone anyway  *loves mah Cheeky*

A New Purpose

Neville looked around the room at the faces turned toward him expectantly. They were haggard, careworn, their eyes haunted. Some of them bore the marks of the Carrows' cruelty. Hannah Abbott's left eye was swollen shut. A long gash ran the length of Anthony Goldstein's right cheek. The cut across Seamus Finnigan's forehead was just beginning to heal. Suddenly Neville was struck by the realization that they really were soldiers in battle, soldiers whose morale was low, whose spirits threatened to be broken. He knew what he had to do.

"When we first joined Dumbledore's Army we all knew this day would come. None of us could have imagined it would be so soon, but here it is and here we are. The Death Eaters walk our hallways. Dementors patrol our boundaries. Snape has been made Headmaster," Neville said contemptuously, "The days of practice are over, it is time to put to use what we have learned. It is time to fight back."

"Are you mad?" said a shocked Ernie, "They are torturing students, or haven't you noticed?"

"Exactly. And we have stood by and done nothing." Neville said, looking at them each in turn. No one save Ginny Weasley met his gaze, "What exactly were we training for? To stand idly by and allow our school to be overrun? To be herded like cattle to slaughter? I don't know about the rest of you, but I trained to fight and that is exactly what I intend to do! If any of you would rather leave..." Neville glanced around the room again, but no one moved. He took a deep breath and went on, "I know it is dangerous. People will get hurt, but people will get hurt anyway whether we act or not. I don't know that we can run them off, but we can at least make life harder for them. So far, they have done as they pleased without any resistance. I say it is time they met some."

"I will fight with you, Neville." said Luna, smiling serenely at him as though he'd suggested a picnic by the lake. His face softened and he smiled back at her.

"Well, you know I'm in." said Ginny Weasley, and several of the other girls nodded.

"I never said I wouldn't fight." said a shame-faced Ernie McMillan, and the rest of the boys mumbled that they too, would stay.

Satisfied, Neville nodded. "Good. There are only a few of us, so our best bet is to work in small groups of two or three. Open warfare would be suicide, I think we can all agree on that, so we'll have to use stealth, keep them guessing whose doing what."

Many of them were nodding and Neville could see the light of purpose coming back into their eyes. They might not be able to oust the Death Eaters but they could make their stay at Hogwarts a lot less pleasant.

rellybelly 01-10-2008 08:37 PM

So I just came from another fanfic that had been hacked and slashed by the Powers that Be and I am quite ticked. It's a beautiful fic written by a very talented writer and should have been left alone, but no, the world can not just let beauty be. They have to deface it by whatever means available.

That said: GG, I wuff you :loved: You brought up quite a few good points.
First, Neville has been slowly but surely coming into his own, and when he finally stepped up in DH, I think many people overlooked it because they were focusing on the Harry/Voldemort conflict. Neville is humble as always and steps down out of the leadership role when Harry arrives but it is obvious that he was the leader while Harry was gone by severa; comments he made. He says the he, Ginny and Luna were the leaders but Ginny and Luna left early, so that only left Neville. Plus, he says he had to go into hiding when the Carrows realized he was the one behind everything. I have not, or have tried very hard not, to change Neville's true character because he is wonderful AS IS. He did not suddenly become brave, he always has been. He simply became what it was always within him to become and that is precisely why I wrote this story. *huggles you* I am trying very hard to make sure all the characters are true to themselves. I don't think adversity changes Luna except to strengthen her (remember the Malfoy's basement?) I think, like Neville, it only gives her a chance to show a core of strength that would have otherwise stayed hidden.

And I know Kevi did not just say "give me chowit" :pfight: Excuse me, peoples, I have a battle to win...:mwaha:

this is good i like it!:D

KellyBear 01-15-2008 09:48 PM

And so it begins...

By the end of the meeting, the twelve had been divided up into groups of three. Each group was given a specific mission but how, when and by what means they carried it out was to be known only to that group.

"That way, even if they use veritaserum, they won't be able to learn much." said Ginny. She knew as well as anyone that the Carrows were more likely to use torture to get the information they wanted, but did not mention it. She could tell by the tense looks on the others' faces that they were thinking the same thing.

Neville, Ginny and Luna lingered after the others had left.

"It was risky calling a meeting like that." said Ginny, but she looked approving.

"It was riskier for everyone to come. I wasn't sure anyone would." Neville said, raking his fingers through his hair. It was getting long. Gran would not approve, he thought ruefully.

"There weren't nearly as many as last time, but I suppose that is because so many have left school..." Luna's voice trailed off, and Neville could tell she was lost in thought. He wondered for a moment what she was thinking, but Ginny's voice brought him back to the present.

"I just wonder how many will be left by the end of the year." said Ginny, and he could tell by the distant look in her eyes that she wasn't just thinking of the D.A. members who had been here tonight. A shiver ran through him and he wondered yet again if he had done the right thing.

"Well, I guess we had better all be getting back. Luna, you go first." Ginny said, the distant look gone from her eyes as though it had never been. Luna waved goodnight to them both and skipped from the room, obeying Ginny's command without question. Neville watched her leave and for the tiniest moment felt a pang of worry before remembering that night in the Department of Mysteries. Luna could take care of herself, he well knew. He turned to Ginny.

"Ready?" he said, and Ginny nodded. They left the Room of Requirement together and the door disappeared behind them.

griffin_girl 01-15-2008 10:22 PM

That was really smart, just knowing a bit of what to do in case the Carrows did use Veritaserum *wants to know what goes on in Kelly's mind:shifty:*

:shifty: It is a dark and scary place. You must never, never go there. :hide:

 These are dark, difficult times and he is right to worry. But, as is the case in real life, having true friends beside you and people who love you will help you get through the most difficult times, and give you strength you never knew you possessed. Even strength to stand up to your greatest fear (and yes, that is an allusion to the next chapter )

An Interesting Lesson

The Dark Arts classroom never failed to make shivers run up and down Neville's spine. He wasn't sure if it was the dark magic emanating from the many foul, cursed objects that filled the shelves or the sheer creepiness of it.

Neville took his seat, trying to keep his eyes downcast. Gryffindor and Slytherin took Dark Arts together, and the Slytherin students, particularly Crabbe and Goyle, enjoyed trying to provoke Gryffindors, anything to get them into trouble in Amycus Carrows' classroom.

Neville idly flipped through his textbook, not really paying attention to the detailed illustrations on how to perform curses. It took a few moments for him to realize the room had become silent as a crypt. He looked around slowly until his eyes fell on the cause the tense silence.

Severus Snape stood at the front of the classroom, staring down each student in turn. Neville's stomach flipped. His shaking hands clenched and unclenched as he looked at Snape, trying to hide the fury, fear and revulsion that welled up in him.

"It appears that Professor Carrow has taken ill this morning, "said Professor Snape, "so he will be spending the morning in the hospital wing. I believe you were studying the Cruciatus Curse." At this, Crabbe and Goyle sat up wearing looks of eager anticipation. "I want each of you to give me twelve inches of parchment on the effects of this curse by the end of the class. Begin now." Crabbe and Goyle slouched back down into their seats, looking dejected.

Neville carefully kept his head down as he took out his parchment and quill so that Professor Snape could not see the look of triumph on his face. Obviously, the Patil twins and Lavender Brown had not had any trouble carrying out their mission. He wondered what exactly they had done to Professor Carrow. He hoped that whatever it was caused him to suffer horribly. With this cheery thought, Neville set to work on his essay.

When the hour was over, Neville stood and carried his parchment to the front and placed it on the desk with the others' in front of Professor Snape, careful to keep his eyes averted.

"One moment, Longbottom. " said Professor Snape and Neville's stomach twisted. Slowly, he looked up at Professor Snape.

"Yes, Professor?" Neville said, trying hard to unclench his jaw and keep his voice even.

"It appears that your friends have abandoned you. Pity that. I wonder, what could be so important?" Professor Snape said in low, silken tones, but his penetrating gaze seemed to peer into Neville's very soul.

Relief washed over Neville. "I dunno, Professor, " Neville answered honestly, his own gaze steady.

Professor Snape scowled. "Very well then, you may go."

A Secret Longing

She lay on her stomach in bed, the bed curtains tightly drawn against the chill. She was supposed to be planning a raid on the Potions storeroom but instead she was staring at a photograph of a smiling boy with unruly black hair. Her own long hair fell in a curtain to hide her face so that even if anyone had pulled back her bed hangings, they would not see the look of desperate longing upon her face.

How long was she supposed to pretend that she did not crave him like oxygen? Or that her every waking moment was not dominated by thoughts of him, and her every dream haunted by his memory?

Without thinking, she lifted her hand to brush back a lock of his silken black hair, and stopped. Unbidden, the realization that she might never touch him again came crashing down on her, ripping through her heart and soul. She squeezed her eyes shut against the pain, trying to think of something else, anything else..

She blinked hard and pressed the photograph to her heart, trying to hold back the tears. A single tear escaped her efforts and ran down her freckled cheek, but she did not bother to brush it away. It slid onto her pillow and slowly spread into a small wet stain.

Come back to me, whispered her heart and the silent plea echoed through her mind until morning.

In The Midnight Hour

Ginny lay in Harry's arms beside the lake, her eyes closed in contentment. Their backs were against a large tree whose branches overhung the water. This had always been their favorite spot. His fingers brushed her cheek as he listened to her tell him about the mission she had planned and all the changes that had taken place at Hogwarts.

"You wouldn't even know it now." she said, lifting her face so he could kiss her.

"Mm, but you are still brilliant." he whispered against her temple.

Ginny smiled up at him, but her eyes were full of sorrow and she shook her head.

"No, if I were brilliant, I would be with you still. I would have found a way." she said sadly.

The dream Harry kissed her once more, chasing away thoughts of anything else.

:strawberr :strawberr :strawberr

Severus Snape sat behind his desk, fingers steepled beneath his hooked nose.

"Longbottom knows nothing of Potter's whereabouts." he said, addressing the portrait which hung behind him.

"Good, good.." came the reply, and the wizard in the portrait exited the frame.

Longbottom had been worried that he was going to question him about the illness of Amycus Carrow, however. He had not bothered to delve into that. Pranks played on the Carrows were of no concern to him. He despised the both of them and was forced to tolerate their presence here. He would ignore their complaints for as long as he reasonably could. He doubted Longbottom or his friends had the good sense not to get caught, but that was of no concern to him either.

Things were moving very quickly now. He did not know how much longer he had. The last thing he needed was silly distractions.

:herb: :herb: :herb:

Neville lay awake in bed, going over the plan in his mind once more. He and Seamus were to meet Hannah Abbot on the third floor at midnight. He glanced at his clock and saw that it was twenty minutes til. No use in laying in bed any longer. He got up and crossed over to Seamus' bed.

"Come on, mate..." he said, shaking Seamus.

"Wha..Dean?" Seamus said groggily.

"Seamus, wake up, we need to get going." Neville said, shaking him harder still until Seamus rolled toward the edge of the bed.

"Alright, alright, I'm coming."

The two of the went downstairs as quietly as they could.

"Alright, mate, we're supposed to meet Hannah on the third floor so we best get going. You awake yet?" Neville peered at Seamus in the firelight, who was still rubbing his eyes.

"Yeah, I'm ready." Seamus said through a yawn, and they took off through the portrait hole.

As soon as they were in the corridor outside the portrait hole, the whole of Hogwarts was filled with a loud shrieking. The portrait of the fat lady slammed itself shut to prevent them from re-entering. The fat lady was beside herself, cowering and covering her ears to try to drown out the Caterwauling.

Neville's insides froze, and he looked around wildly for a way to escape before they were caught. Seamus looked just as terrified and Neville did the only thing he could think of. Pulling his wand out of his robes, he smacked Seamus hard on the head, and watched as he slowly vanished out of sight, then performed the Disillusionment Charm on himself as well.

A Small Satisfaction

Seamus and Neville flattened themselves against the stone wall as Alecto Carrow came storming up the corridor followed closely by Professor McGonagall.

"What on earth could you have possibly been thinking, " Professor McGonagall raged, "a caterwauling charm inside the school? Have you gone mad?"

"Shut up, you old bat, and help me find the little fiends who set it off." snapped Alecto.

Professor McGonagall's nostrils flared as she glared at Alecto's back. "Shut. It. Off. Now."

Alecto opened her mouth to retort, but snapped it shut instantly. Severus Snape was gliding toward them, his face a mask of cold fury.

"Silence it now."

Alecto hurriedly did as he asked, and the silence that descended upon the school was deafening.

"Explain." Snape said coldly, and Alecto shrunk back from him.

"I--I--well, with Amycus--obviously, he was poisoned by students and I thought perhaps--" Alecto took a deep breath and, not quite meeting Professor Snape's gaze, said, "I put caterwauling charms on the entrances to the dormitories so I could catch students sneaking out after curfew."

"Did it not occur to you to use a slightly less disturbing charm, one that would not awaken the entire school? Did it also occur to you that your 'alarm' could be set off by any number of creatures and not just students sneaking about?" Severus asked cooly.

"I,uh, well.." Alecto stammered, and shot looks of deep loathing at both Professor Snape and Professor McGonagall, "What are you going to do about my brother being poisoned?"

"Likely your idiot brother poisoned himself," Alecto bristled at Professor Snape's words, but held her tongue.

Wearing a look that suggested she had just eaten a dozen doxie eggs, Professor McGonagall addressed herself to Professor Snape. "Headmaster, what about the charms on the entrances to the four Houses?"

"Alecto will remove them at once, and no more 'alarms' will be placed without my permission, do you understand?"

Alecto nodded, looking decidedly ill herself.

"Now if you will both excuse me, I have business to attend to." Severus said and stalked back up the corridor, disappearing around the corner in a great swirl of cloaks.

"Well," said Professor McGonagall, "it looks as though you've got work to do as well." She looked Alecto up and down with distaste and hurried back to her own quarters, leaving Alecto standing in the corridor, a picture of impotent rage.

After a few moments, Alecto withdrew her wand and approached the portrait hole. The fat lady trembled as Alecto mumbled her incantations. Finished, she muttered darkly and hurried away.

Finding themselves alone in the corridor at last, Neville and Seamus relaxed.

"Well, mate, I suggest we go back to bed. It's no good tonight," came Seamus voice on Neville's left.

Neville was forced to agree. With Alecto in a high temper, stalking the corridors, there would be no way for them to complete their mission tonight.

"Right then, " he said, "to bed."

Once inside the Gryffindor Common Room, Neville tapped Seamus once on the head, removing the Disillusionment Charm.

"That was a fair bit of magic, mate, but did you have to hit me quite so hard?" asked Seamus, rubbing his still aching head.

Neville blushed and mumbled an apology.

"S'alright. I reckon you saved my skin tonight. Thanks."

Neville grinned at the compliment and they headed upstairs to bed. Neville hoped Hannah had gone back to bed as well.

An Unexpected Kiss

At breakfast the next morning, Neville caught Hannah's eye, and signaled for her to meet him outside the entrance to the Great Hall. She nodded once, finished her breakfast and left. Neville waited a moment more, then followed her out. He found her standing at the foot of the staircase, waiting expectantly.

"Come on, let's go outside so we can talk privately, " he whispered before she could utter a word, putting a hand on her elbow to guide her toward the door.

Once they were outside, Hannah turned to him, her face flushed with excitement. "Oh, I am so glad you two weren't caught! I was about to leave the common room when that awful screeching started up, and thought surely you had been caught by that hag! I was so relieved to see you come in for breakfast this morning." The words tumbled out of her in a rush, though she did her best to keep her voice down.

"She almost had us, but I don't think she'll be setting any more alarms," and Neville told Hannah all that he and Seamus had seen and heard.

"But why should Snape care if she catches us?" Hannah asked, her brow furrowed.

"Honestly, I think he was just annoyed by all the noise. But, listen Hannah, Seamus and I have been talking. I think we should hold off a few more days before we try anything. The Carrows are going to be waiting for something now, and we want to catch them off-guard. We were thinking maybe this weekend we could try again." Neville said in a low voice.

Hannah nodded and a playful breeze lifted a strand of her blonde hair, whipping it across her face. Without thinking, Neville pushed the errant strand back behind her ear with a finger, marveling for a moment at the way it caught the sun. Suddenly embarrassed and flustered by his own boldness and familiarity, Neville snatched his hand away, blushing a violent shade of red. Before he looked away, he saw the wondering look Hannah gave him, as though seeing him for the first time.

"I..I think that is a wonderful idea, " she said breathlessly, "this weekend then." Impulsively, she stood on tiptoe and kissed his cheek. Flashing him a dazzling smile, she turned and skipped off to her next class, leaving him staring after her, gaping.

What on earth had just happened? He touched the place on his cheek where she had kissed him. They had come outside to discuss sabotage, and instead she had kissed him. He wasn't entirely sure how he felt about it. Sure, he had always thought her pretty, with her long blonde hair, rosy cheeks and bright blue eyes but...then a slow grin spread across his face. Hannah had kissed him! Still touching the place on his cheek, he whistled a merry tune as he made his way toward his next class.

Mission Accomplished

Neville's stomach clenched at the thought of what they were about to do. Sweat ran into his eyes. As he wiped it away, he noticed that his hands shook. He led the way toward the Great Hall, Seamus and Hannah at his heels. They were so close now and thus far, there had been no sign of the Carrows or any of their Slytherin henchman.

Hannah took her post at the entrance to the Great Hall, keeping watch. Keeping close to the wall, Neville and Seamus skirted the house tables and made their way to the dias at the back of the hall.

"Make this quick, mate." Seamus said, his eyes darting nervously toward the entrance. Neville could see that Seamus was just as scared as he was which in an odd way, gave him a bit more courage. Nodding once, he whispered a spell Fred and George Weasley had taught him, and his wandtip ignited. In huge glowing acid green letters, he wrote "Dumbledore's Army, Still Recruiting" behind the professor's table. The words, written so large that they stretched the entire length of the dias, would burn for 3 days before finally fading. Despite his fear, Neville smiled. Oh, the Death Eaters were not going to like this, not one bit.

Neville surveyed his work for a second more then turned to Seamus. "It's done. Let's go."

KellyBear 02-27-2008 04:05 AM

A New Hope

The next morning, all of Hogwarts was astir over the graffiti hanging in the Great Hall. Student's stifled giggles as the Carrows tried in vain to make the large glowing letters fade. A few of the other professors made half-hearted attempts as well, but as Neville had known they would be, all of their efforts were futile. The Weasley twins had guaranteed the letters would burn for three days, and Neville had no doubt that they would do just that.

No one knew who had written the words there, and it was even whispered that perhaps Fred and George had found a way into Hogwarts and were even now planning a reign of terror that would make all their other pranks combined pale by comparison. Neville walked a little taller when he heard that, unable to hide his pride. They had taken a terrible risk, he knew, and would surely pay for it in the end, but it had been worth it to see the spark of hope it had ignited in the other students.

As he made his way toward Herbology, he saw Hannah waiting for him outside the greenhouse. She had worn her long, blonde hair loose and the cold made her cheeks rosy. He thought she looked like a Christmas angel. When he reached her, she smiled at up at him, her eyes dancing with excitement.

"Have you heard? The whole school is talking about it!" Hannah bounced on the balls of her feet, hardly able to contain herself.

"Shh, yes, but keep your voice down. They are saying that it is the work of the Weasley twins returned." Neville could not suppress his grin.

Hannah looked up at him and his heart gave a little leap. She was smiling, but there was something in her eyes that made his heart hammer.

"You..I don't think the Weasley twins could have done any better." Hannah said. Taking his hand in hers, she led him into the greenhouse for the start of the lesson.

I won't be posting as much but my fic updates will be longer with more chapters posted at once because I won't be online as often. I am flattered, humbled and touched by all my readers and appreciate all your comments. The story will unfortunately wrap up soon but you have all made it a pleasure to write. Stay tuned for a little romantic entanglment, and some more adventures. If you are a DA member, you know I wrote a few poems related to the story: 2 love poems, one G/H and one N/L, in the poetry thread there. They aren't all that good, but they are story related.
:glomp: Thank you for staying loyal. I want to finish the story before the baby arrives, so wish me luck.

Teaser.

The D.A. continued to meet sporadically, sharing information and congratulating each other on successful missions. So far, none had been caught and Neville hoped their good fortune would continue. All of the students at Hogwarts (except perhaps, the Slytherins) seemed less fearful than before. Neville felt in his heart that they could probably accomplish no more than this, but it was enough. He was as determined to rally his fellow students as the Carrows were to break them.

Just before All Hallows Eve, Ginny called a meeting of the D.A. She had wanted to plan something truly spectacular, but had refused to share with him what it was. To tell the truth, he was a little on edge about it. Ginny was so brave, willing to risk anything for what she believed and what she wanted. Sometimes her daring made him more than a little nervous. Now she wanted to involve the entire D.A. in a "special mission" on the one night when surely everyone would be on the highest alert. Would it really be worth the risk of being exposed? He wasn't so sure, but he was willing to listen. Ginny had proven to be a brilliant tactician and he was sure whatever she had planned would be unforgettable.

Plots and Plans

When Neville entered the Room of Requirement, Ginny and Seamus were waiting for him. A large wooden table stood in the center of the room piled high with rolled maps. Ginny had one spread out on the table and motioned for him to join her.

"I have asked each of the teams to meet me at different times so that no one but me knows the whole plan or what the other teams are doing. Where is Hannah?" Ginny asked, glancing back at the door.

"She has detention," Neville said, grimacing, "I'll have to fill her in later." Ginny gave a sympathetic nod and turned back toward the map.

"You are most familiar with the grounds around the greenhouses, so you and your team will take that area." Ginny said, pointing to the map. This map showed the grounds of Hogwarts and all it's outlying buildings, and Ginny's finger rested on an area near the greenhouses.

"Let me show you what I have in mind." Ginny hefted a large, lurid green sack marked with a huge purple W onto the wooden table as she said this. Neville smiled despite himself. He could only imagine what kind of scheme Ginny had managed to cook up with her twin brothers. Whatever it was she was about to show him, one thing was certain--this Halloween was going to be unforgettable.

Strange Sensations

Neville did not see Hannah until the following morning at breakfast. He cringed at the sight of her swollen lips and bruised cheek. He longed to go to her and comfort her but he knew the Carrows were watching. The dark shadows under her eyes bespoke of her long ordeal. She kept her head down and after awhile Neville gave up any hope of catching her eye. He turned dejectedly back to the breakfast growing cold on his plate.

He knew frustratingly little about Ginny's grand plan. He knew only that a large quantity of fireworks were involved. He and his team would be setting up a few near the greenhouses before the feast on Halloween. He was burning with curiosity but Ginny would not tell him more. If any of them were caught and forced to tell what they knew, the plan could still be carried out, only slightly modified. Only Ginny knew the whole of it.

Neville's gaze strayed once more to Hannah. Luna was sitting next to her now, petting her shoulder and whispering encouragingly to her. A sudden stab of jealousy went through him then was gone. Strangely, he wasn't sure exactly who he was jealous of. The thought troubled him and he turned away from them, the vision of Luna with her pale blonde hair and sweet smile comforting Hannah still with him.

KellyBear 04-21-2008 10:13 PM

A Confused Heart

Neville was troubled the rest of the day which made him unusually moody. He went through his classes automatically, not really seeing or hearing anything that went on around him. Ginny sat next to him at lunch and tried to draw him out but only ended up exasperated with him and turned to chat with Lavender Brown instead. She eyed him several times afterward, but only frowned at him and said nothing.

He saw Hannah again in Herbology, surrounded by a small knot of Hufflepuff girls. She met his eyes and gave him a small brave smile which only made him feel worse. He smiled back at her but did not go over to talk to her, telling himself that she wasn't alone and that he could talk to her later. She frowned at him a little once or twice during the lesson but did not come over to him. When the lesson was over, she left with the other Hufflepuff girls. Neville was both relieved and peeved by this and his mood grew darker.

At the end of the day, he was avoiding everyone and snapping at anyone who dared speak to him. Confused and angry with himself, he took the stairs up to the boys' dormitory two at a time and threw himself down on his bed. He didn't have time for this, he told himself though he wasn't sure exactly what this was. He wished with all his heart that he had someone to talk to. A vision of Luna popped into his head and he pushed it away angrily. She was the last person he wanted to talk to about this. But why?

Frustrated, he rolled over onto his back and stared up the bed canopy. Thinking, and trying very hard not to, Neville closed his eyes. Visions of Luna and Hannah played before his eyes, smiling at him. They laughed, tossing their hair and blowing kisses at him. Neville groaned and sat up, rubbing his eyes to rid himself of the image. Maybe he should just stay busy, he thought, reaching for his schoolbag. He groaned again when he realized he had not written down a single assignment all day.
Feeling like he was surely losing his mind, he got up to go find Seamus so he could get a copy of his assignments. He wondered if maybe he should talk to Seamus, but rejected the idea as too embarrassing. Besides, what would he say?

Ginny's Advice

Downstairs in the common room, Neville spotted Ginny sitting on an overstuffed sofa near the fire. Seamus was nowhere in sight. Heaving a deep sigh, Neville made to go back upstairs to the boys dormitory to wait for Seamus but Ginny had looked up from the large book spread across her lap and motioned him over. He considered ignoring her for a moment, but remembered her temper and thought better of it.

I wouldn't put it passed her to follow me, he thought, blushing a deep scarlet.

Ginny frowned at him as he sat down, her eyes narrowing as she studied him. After a close scrutiny, she asked "What's wrong with you?"

Slightly affronted and alarmed, Neville answered defensively "Nothing."

"Bull." she said matter-of-factly, "You have been in a foul mood all day. Why?"

Neville looked away, but he knew there was no use in lying. He never been a good liar, and Ginny was too shrewd to be fooled by any feeble attempt at it he might make. More than slightly embarrassed, he tried to work out how to explain what he himself did not understand.

"There is this girl--" he started and Ginny smiled.

"Is that all? Well, I don't think you have much to worry about. I think Hannah likes you, as well." Ginny said.

"Actually, I was thinking about Luna." Neville said, turning an even deeper shade of red.

"Luna?" Ginny asked, clearly puzzled. "But I thought--Luna? Are you sure?"

"I'm not sure of anything!" Neville exploded, "That's the problem!"

"Calm down. It's just, I thought--well, I'd heard that--never mind. It's not important. Look, Neville, if you think you might have feelings for Luna, the best thing you can do is talk to her." Ginny said, then smiled at Neville's look of alarm, "Come on, it's not as bad as all that. You've been friends for ages, just approach her casually. It is the only way you're going to know for sure what you feel and if she feels the same."

"If who feels the same?" said Seamus, who had just walked up behind them.

"No one you know. I was just telling Neville about some silly gossip I'd overheard today." Ginny said casually.

"Seamus, I was wondering if you had a copy of today's homework. I seem to have misplaced mine." Neville said quickly.

"Sure, mate, it's upstairs in me bag." said Seamus, and Neville rose to follow him upstairs.

Turning back, Neville gave Ginny a grateful smile and she nodded. Not for the first time, he thought himself very lucky to have her as a friend.

A Friend In Need

All Hallow's Eve dawned grey and cold. Neville went through his classes like an automaton, his stomach boiling at the thought of what they had planned for the afternoon. Several times, he had to duck into the bathroom to throw up. After the third time, he ran out into the corridor and straight into Mildred Velch, a sixth year Slytherin student roughly the size of a small mountain troll, and just as comely.

Mildred grunted and looked down at him with a scowl. "S-s-sorry." Neville stammered, a milisecond before her ham-like fist slammed into his jaw with a force that sent him sprawling on the floor. The evil glint in her piggish eyes told him she was only getting started, but before she could act, a leg-locking hex hit her and she fell forward, a stunned expression on her fleshy face.

Neville rolled out of the way as Mildred fell toward him, barely missing being crushed. He watched, astonished, as she rolled and flopped helplessly on the floor, unable to right herself. He looked around but saw no one who would have come to his aid. He had no time to worry over it as he was already late for his class. He got up and sprinted down the hall, leaving Mildred where she lay to flop like a landed fish.

He had come back to Hogwarts this year prepared to fight at Harry's side, but Harry had not returned and Neville felt somewhat lost.

Neville is love ♥ And he totally deserved to be in Gryffindor as he well proves in DH and HBP ... but that you totally chose to write about him is so cool, there aren't enough Neville fics in my opinion out there ... and those that there are ... well ... so good luck and don't make him a nebbish  He's adorable.

Hehehehe ... I always loved Hermione's protean charm ... :mwaha: *flees from Ron and Kellybear*

Neways, here I am, as promised, and I love the start of your story ... I really wish I was farther in ... *aaaaaaaaaargh* But that is my own fault this story has been around for a while ... I'm loving that it focuses on Neville and hopefully all the other Gryffindors who went to Hogwarts while the trio were off saving the universe ...

You have to admit ... Ginny was there as was Seamus and Dean  what? :shifty: Neways, don't forget the Creevy's and Michael Corner or ... well Cho would have graduated but that dang Zacharias Smith remember? The DA had a lot of members ... I wish I could remember them all. The Inquisitorial Squad had their fair share too and whatever happened to Susan Bones anyways? I don't remember the books touching on that after HBP. Whatever ... I'm sure whatever you choose to write about the story will PWN. I can't wait to catch up ... please PAMS when you cans ...

I love that you're writing bout this time period I don't think that people really write about this often and it kind of goes unnoticed what with Harry's antics and saving the whole wizarding world. *shrugs* But Neville was heroic too, and I love that this whole fic will be dedicated to his and the other DA members actions ... go Neville save the day or at least makes Carrow's and Snape regret it ... well not Snape so much because of what we know but ... :hmm: well Dumbledore really did know what he was doing didn't he? I wonder what the other teachers thought about him as Headmaster ... did they think he betrayed Dumbledore or ... I don' know ... did they think him a traitor in spite of everything ...

You go Neville, why don't you have a smile you courageous person you ... *runningglompslovesNeville*

I love your story everyday and you should keep posting so I don't spam your fic and I can keep telling you how wonderful you are. I think you should use more contractions though, the speeches sound a bit stilted when they're perfect no one says we will ... at least not alla time, we'll works for me ... or I'll not I will ... every now and then ... and that's just a friendly suggestion not necessary.

This is a case in point ... but just the same it doesn't surprise me that Luna would volunteer so easily and eagerly. N/L is love ♥ ... whatever may be cannon.

Seriously kewl. I love how Neville becomes a tactician and how they're going to use guerrilla tactics to fight. I think that the trio always kind of overshadowed Neville and with their absence and the absence of Draco who always put him down ... it was only right that it be his time to shine and not surprisingly against his greatest fear Professor Snape. I remember these things.

Seriously, it's not really spamming I'm posting more comments ... the point is, I've read up to where Professor Snape has taken over the class from that Carrows chap and ... uhm, yay Neville.

I love your story and how you write it it's very well thought out and it clearly has a direction ... unlike say, my style of writing  I hope you get more readers soon, do not despair, this fic deserves them ...

I'm off to find Neville Pics for your siggy. Good luck. :glomp:

Getting Ready

That afternoon, he met Hannah at the rear of the greenhouse. Each of them carried a small rucksack filled with fireworks, explosives, and rolls of self-igniting wire. Ernie was already setting up the tubes from which the explosives would be shot.

"Aren't we worried someone will find them?" Hannah asked.

"Ginny has already taken care of that. They should melt away right after the explosives are fired. All that'll be left is a greasy black smudge." said Ernie, checking his calculations.

"Alright, let's do this." Neville dumped out his rucksack and began loading the tubes while Hannah set up the wires.

"I'm done," said Ernie, gathering up his things.

"You go on, we'll be right behind you." said Neville, without looking up.

Ernie ducked down and rounded the corner of the greenhouse, leaving Neville alone with Hannah.

Neville finished loading the tubes and stood back to watch Hannah. The bruises on her cheek were beginning to fade, and a faint blush of excitement shone through, a pale rose blooming against newly fallen snow. She looked so delicate kneeling there and he felt as though he had failed her.

"Hannah," he began, and blushed when she looked up and her eyes met his. "I, um...I'm sorry."

Hannah gave him a puzzled look and his hand went to his own cheek. Understanding dawned and she gave him a lopsided smile that tried to hide a small grimace of pain, as her hand went to her own face. Neville winced.

"I must look awful." she said a little ruefully.

Fury whipped up inside him with such ferocity that for a moment he couldn't breathe for it. He turned away so that she would not see, and forced himself to unclench his fists.

He took several ragged breaths, trying to control the his emotions. At first, he wanted to lash out at the Carrows, but then he felt all the rage, all the frustration he felt coalesce into something cold within him. The volcanic fury met cold hatred and solidified.

He felt oddly calm. No longer were his emotions out of control, raging within him. He understood now. It was no longer enough to strike at the dogs when it was their master who commanded them. Snape must pay, would pay. An involuntary shudder of his old fear shook him, but he pushed it down contemptuously.

"Neville?" Hannah was at his elbow. "I'm ready. We should be getting back."

Neville turned toward her, his face a harsh mask mirroring the emotions within him. Hannah gasped and took a step back. Neville smoothed his face into a smile and reached for her sack.

"I'm ready, too. Let's go."

Hannah looked at him a little uncertainly, but seemed to make up her mind that what she had seen had been a trick of the light. She gave him her sack and they started back for the castle.

An: I am a Gryffindor, so of course, I must balance romance with adventure, drama and acts of bravery. As my True Heart says, moderation in all things. ;) But there is more of all of them to come....

Ottylove: Thank you. For Everything.

Welcome, Lissy, I hope you enjoy.

This is Ginny right? Poor thing ... :glomp: I always hated that she and Harry broke up in book 6 and that ... well, just things ... you know? But, the course of true love never did run straight ... or something to that effect.

Did you happen to notice the date of the H/G post that you were reading? Let's just say it was a very personal post for me that carried a lot of heartfelt emotions.

I used to feel so badly for Harry in DH, when he would get the MM out and search for Ginny's name, wondering if she knew how much he wanted to be with her and just longed for her, even the smell of her hair. JK did a very good job making me feel his pain. But, let me tell you, she can't compair to your tremendous writing. Ginny's heartache for Harry feels real and I can't help getting choked up over it. I await as patiently as I can for another post.

OtterySt.Catchpole 09-26-2009 05:56 AM

Suddenly, I want a piggy icon and piggy siggy ... hmm Ms. Piggy or Wilbur? Babe maybe

January would have been about the time ... someone disappeared until March? <_<

Neways ... :poke:

I'll edit this with what I just read ... I acted on impulse *as always* and had to go back and find out what the dates were ... :read: I'm so studious I am. :wizard:

2 qut = too cute. Seriously, adorableness. I think you should have stopped at that and left the kiss for later on in the story but ... you know me. I make these stories into long long things that just never seem to end  so ... cute and kewl.
