| | | Death Chamber
There is a quiet that settles here. Not the quiet of peace, nor of comfort—but of finality. Of inevitability.
Structured in the likeness of a stone amphitheater, the Death Chamber is solemn and stripped of pretense. From the moment one enters, the descending architecture draws the eye and the soul downward, step by marble step, toward the center where all things end. The room is circular and symmetrical, each line deliberate, echoing Greco-Roman influence in its use of cool, pale marble, and its balance that mimics judgment, ritual, and sacrifice. It feels older than time. And perhaps it is. At the heart of the sunken space lies a dais, simple and unadorned, upon which sits a stone archway so ancient it looks as though the faintest breath might turn it to dust. It leans ever so slightly, worn by time or perhaps memory, and from it hangs the infamous Veil—tattered, translucent, and always in motion, though there is no wind here. Depending on the angle and the light (and the moment), its color shifts between bone-pale black, bruised blue, sickly green, or the dull shimmer of shadowed silver. To most, the Veil is silent. But to a rare few—those whose grief runs marrow-deep or whose lives were once tightly threaded to a soul now departed—it speaks. Not in sentences, not in answers, but in fragments. Laughter once known. A song half-remembered. Pleas or names or sounds that brush just behind the ear. It cannot be conversed with. It cannot be bargained with. It only listens, and occasionally, repeats. There is no danger in this room, not in the traditional sense. There are no wards that shock or potions that poison. No spikes or traps or spells that flash. There is only one thing that can harm you here—and it will not let you leave. Those who pass through the Veil do not come back.
In the years following the Third Wizarding War, the Department recognized the need to study not just the mechanics of death, but the delicate thread between life and afterlife. Thus, under the direction of Unspeakable Jane Howard, an elevated laboratory was constructed—sterile, pristine, and gently curved to mimic the amphitheater’s shape, perched on the topmost tier. Made of enchanted glass and high-grade spell-resistant steel, this laboratory stands in stark contrast to the rest of the Death Chamber. Its walls do not echo; its floors do not creak. It exists as a place of intervention, where the Alchemists work to isolate the metaphysical markers of mortality, examine near-death experiences, and—on rare occasions—attempt soul retrieval through ethically sanctioned spirit anchoring. The instruments here are unlike any used in the rest of the Ministry and some have no names in English. Vials glow not with potion, but with essence. Pendulums track breaths. There is a glass bowl that cries once a week, and no one knows why. Only Death Chamber Alchemists are permitted within this top-tier laboratory. Any Unspeakable who dares cross the threshold without proper clearance will find their hands slick with crimson and transformed into a soft, gummy texture—a warning curse that takes a week to wear off and far longer to forget.
This room is not one of fear, nor even sorrow. It is one of reverence. It is not concerned with what you feel. Only what you are, and what you leave behind.
Together with the Time Chamber and Space Chamber, the Death Chamber forms the silent axis that balances the Department’s greater mysteries: not what we know, but what we cannot ever know until it is too late.

| It was cold, clammy, and the light was dim. The Death Chamber felt more like a mausoleum than ever, despite their previous efforts to liven the place up. Whatever was moving sounded like trying to walk through a swamp. "There it is." Damian spoke in a hushed tone, his eyes adjusting to the light. "The shadow at the far wall." It appeared as an absence of light, a shifting Rorschach test that looked different depending on who was viewing it. Thin pseudopods stretched from a center mass, branching like veins or rivers, creating Lichtenburg figures across the floor. "Looks like we have a protoplasmic biblio-entity on our hands. A semi-sentient mass of magic ink spreading knowledge with a viral touch. Prolonged exposure will cause you to forget everything else. Won't know your own name, but you'll know every word of the book that thing used to be." It was a secret that desired to be a gospel. Dark magic given life, it would fill the minds of every witch and wizard it could reach. These three would be the first to preach the word of the new book of magic. Forbidden spells and rituals would spread across the wizarding world like a starless night stretching across the sky forever.
Damian kept his hands in the pockets of his leather jacket, reluctant to draw his wand just yet. Just looking at the shapeless mass seemed to have some effect on the wizard. It was hard to concentrate with intrusive thoughts seeping in. "Theories anyone?"

Hogwarts RPG Name: Hope Archard Ravenclaw Fifth Year | Jane had turned away as soon as she caught a glimpse of the shapeless thing that seemed to just exude 'wrongness' and thought for a while, trying to remember what state her experiment had been in the last time she'd been working on it. "That entity, whatever darkness was in that book, has also absorbed the experiment I'd been working on. I was just completing the Black Phase, the final separation of the new life from the dead, impure residue. If I'm not mistaken, that spark of life is what's fueling the entity and if we can remove it, the thing should lose its ability to move and function on its own and return to what it was originally. And now that it's no longer linked to its host, the book, perhaps it will expire on its own.
"I think we might try one thing that might work; we---oh, Damian, DO stop looking at that thing! (for she had noticed a slight vagueness creeping into her colleague's eyes). I think--now where was I--oh, yes. Perhaps a variation of something like the Bubble-Head Charm might be effective for a start. We need to try to contain the thing somehow; then perhaps some sort of warming charm might cause the good to separate from the bad. Try to re-create the Bain Maria I was using in the original experiment. The life-form already has the desire and impetus to rise up and away from the dross, it just needs some help." |

Hogwarts RPG Name: TBD Gryffindor Hogwarts RPG Name: Zara H. Bunbury-Foster Slytherin Fifth Year | Professor Pink | Mrs. Bruce Wayne | I'm on a Goat | Glitterpuff | Dumbledore's Defense Squad | BHB David kept his wand at the ready as he trailed the others, just in case whatever it was inside was moving quicker than they expected. It must be contained to this room no matter the cost, this he knew with grave certainty.
He was quiet and watchful, trying his best to observe the entity in the corner without becoming absorbed by it. He could feel himself starting to stare, though, his eyes becoming glassy behind his spectacles. It was just so.... incredible.... what Jane had accidentally accomplished... should they really destroy it?
"What if we keep a part of it, like a sample sized biopsy, in a jar, just to see how it atrophies?" It was like they (not him, David typically never engaged in foolhardy experiments) had created artificial life which should be preserved for posterity. And for other reasons.

"What if we keep a part of it, like a sample sized biopsy, in a jar, just to see how it atrophies?" If Jane had known Truebridge was thinking her experiment was an accident, she would have been quite nettled. Creating this spark of life wasn't the accident, it was the natural end of a successful Black Phase of the alchemical process. What was an accident was its co-mingling with this evil...whatever it was...that Mr. Pendragon had so unwisely stored in the same chamber as her laboratory. Though it was her fault as well, for she should have objected more strongly when Damian first brought that dratted book in here. "No," she replied, carefully keeping her eyes turned away from the creature. "If we can't separate out the evil that was stored in that book, there's no point in keeping this...experiment. It would be impure and useless for the next phase of the alchemical process." Jane was not sentimental about these matters, but she was anxious to preserve all those months--years, really--of work. And this process had been interfered with so many times already! |

"Right." Wiping at his nose, a small red smear was left across the back of his hand before he drew his wand. "We turn up the heat then, yeah?" "INCENDIO!" His commanding voice filled the chamber as he thrust his wand in the direction of the shapeless mass. What he lacked in finesse he made up for with barely restrained power. A fierce burst of fire erupted from the tip of his wand, warming the air, and lighting up the chamber. It was in this flash of light that they saw the true extent of the danger. The inky tendrils had been stretched across the outer walls of the chamber. Oily fingers reaching towards the door that the trio had entered from, wanting to cut off their only means of escape. Disappointment came in pairs as the flames rolled over the surface of the entity before fading into nothing. If it did anything, it certainly got it's attention.
Without time to be crestfallen, Damian had to think before the walls closed in. "My mission, mister Truebridge; is to eliminate the threat of the amalgam. Jane's is to recover whatever is left of her experiments. And you to observe and report on this little misadventure. If you think we should take a sample, then perhaps we should consider it if there's something left." This was presuming that they could overcome the challenge ahead of them. "This is the last chance for you two to escape. If you stay, we see this through to the end." Damian had taken a step down towards the center of the room. "I think Jane's idea might work if we can get through the void membrane." Down at the bottom of the bowl, standing vigilant near the vale was Damian's ever-standing walking stick. It had been his constant companion when he first joined the Ministry of Magic, but as he healed from old wounds, he leaned on it less and less often. Today, the wizard needed it more than ever. "Give me a distraction, and I'll give you an opening."

Hogwarts RPG Name: Hope Archard Ravenclaw Fifth Year | "I won't leave without trying to salvage something," Jane replied firmly. "Don't go too close to it, Damian--I want to try something first. The idea is not to heat it directly, but to try to enclose it first. Let's see if I remember how to do this..." Jane wrinkled her brow a minute, then flung out her wand and cast a complicated charm under her breath. A rush of sparkling, clear light spread out from her wand tip toward the...entity, or whatever it was, circling around to its very edges and surrounding it in a crystal-clear, starry sphere. "My!" exclaimed Jane, rather pleased with herself. "Take a look, Damian--did I get it all? Once it's enclosed, we need to focus the heat at the bottom of the sphere." |

It was the laissez faire attitude and lack of following careful lab procedures that had gotten them into this mess in the first place. He nodded at Damian to acknowledge his instructions and then imitated Jane, wand out and ready. Thank heavens her idea to contain it had worked so far.
"I'll be the fire brigade," he offered, already thinking of the water spell he'd choose, "unless you think both of us should set it ablaze?" It might need a combined effort to destroy it.... he looked to his elder colleagues, ready to follow their lead.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Hope Archard Ravenclaw Fifth Year | Jane nodded as her colleagues aided her. "Good, good, that's about right," she muttered almost under her breath. "Now, start with a gentle heat, but be ready to increase it if necessary." Jane began to weave her wand up and down and as she did so, the crystal-like orb began to warp and stretch until it was shaped almost like an hourglass. As the container reached the desired shape, she switched to a somewhat advanced warming charm. "Focus the head on the bottom part of the container--I want to see if we can separate the darkness from the light." Jane was staring intently at the roiling blackness inside the orb, alert for any change. If this worked here as it would during a laboratory separation, the germ of her experiment would rise up out of the dark entity from Damian's book, freeing itself and escaping into the upper chamber. The minute that happened the opening between the two ends had to be closed. |

| There were no two witches or wizards that Damian would trust more with such dangerous alchemy. Jane and David could handle the heavy lifting while he retrieved his walking stick. Touching that ever-standing staff, he gave voice to a melody in his head. There was magic in music, and this particular tune triggered a transformation in his walking stick.
As David and Jane worked their magics, something pure and new rose from the depths of the dark entity, lifting to the upper half of the container. A single tendril from the black mass held tight to Jane's germ of an experiment, threatening to drag it back under.
With a single stroke the thread was severed. The bright future was unburdened by a dark past. In place of his trusty staff, Damian was holding a shining sword. The goblin silver blade had a shimmering rainbow edge, so sharp was it that even light would be cut into its constituent spectral colors. He had kept it hidden since the end of the war, never expecting he would need to use it again. "If you want to take a sample, David, now would be the time." The writhing mass struggled to maintain any sort of solid form as it no longer had Jane's experiment to feed off of.

The goblin silver blade had a shimmering rainbow edge, so sharp was it that even light would be cut into its constituent spectral colors. He had kept it hidden since the end of the war, never expecting he would need to use it again. "Oh, well done, Damian!" muttered Jane almost under her breath, she was concentrating on the rising brightness. The moment she saw Damian's sword (and what kind of sword was that, exactly? she would have to ask Damian about that...later...) slice away the last tendril of darkness, her wand darted out and the narrow opening between the top globe and the bottom was closed in an instant.
As Jane weaved her wand in and out, the to globe very slowly began to rise, creeping further and further away from the writhing blackness in the bottom globe, until at last the crystalline orb with the bright, living germ of Jane's alchemical working inside was floating high above, near the ceiling of the Death Chamber.
Breathing a small sigh of relief (but not relaxing her guard), Jane spared a glance at David, wondering if he was indeed going to try to take a sample--and if so, where he was going to keep the thing. Not, she hoped, in the Death Chamber--they'd had just about enough of that. Behind her, down below on the pedestal that held the ragged, eerie curtains hanging from the archway, came the faint, incoherent whispers that one could hear in the Death Chamber, if one was still and listened. But these murmurings seemed just a bit louder; Jane could have almost sworn they seemed angry, if she had been the sort of person to imagine things (which she was not, thank you very much). |
