Default That Summer - V.3

Once again this is a continued role-play created by hazydazy012, kept ever so strong and alive by it's loyal RPers. As the title says, this is version (3) three, the first two threads have reached their post limits. From the original thread:

One year at Hogwarts a mysterious spell was cast that not even the professors can undo. You wouldn't be able to see a difference at Hogwarts, just looking at the school, but it actually made magic impossible! Not a single person or creature could cast a spell while in the school. How are the students supposed to learn when they can't try out the new spells? Sure, most were devestated, (Especially the 7th years! How are they supposed to finish their last year?!) but of course, some were estatic too! Who doesn't want to have a longer summer vacation? So, most students go home in high spirits TWO months before Hogwarts was officially supposed to be let out for summer break. Only one week into their luxuriously long holiday, every student recieves this letter:

"It is mandatory for any students who want to complete their year to attend "La Bacchetta Magica", a summer learning camp for wizards located in a small getaway near Tuscany. You will be finishing up the studies that were unfinished at Hogwarts. Please bring your wand and other necessary items for regular classes."

Fantastic. Some are angry, but most are excited! I mean, it's called "The Magic Wand" in Italian, for goodness sakes. It's gotta be fun. And guess what?! It is! Everyone is having a great time with the mix of school and just plain summer camp fun! How will the Divinations in the morning and campfires at night affect the students? You decide!

Please join! There will need to be a few professors/camp counselors! Even number of boys and girls, please. Post a bio with a picture, thanks!

(P.S. I looked up "La Bacchetta Magica" and it told me "The Magic Wand" but it was only an online translator. If I'm wrong, then whoops! Heehee)

Ferris was about to speak when Vianna unexpectedly leaned towards him, surprising him with a kiss on the lips. Smiling just slightly, the boy returned it enthusiastically, instinct falling back into his gestures as he found himself once more caught up in the feeling that came with kissing Vianna. And that feeling always made his mind go numb and his arms pull her closer on instinct. But after a few sweet moments, he broke apart, his brown eyes a little dazed as he flashed her a lopsided smile. "What was that for?" he asked playfully, his brown eyes sparkling.

Vianna's blue eyes fluttered open as they pulled away from the kiss and she chuckled softly as Ferris asked what the kiss had been for. "I dunno..." she replied honestly, her smile somewhat sheepish. "But I think it had something to do with your cuteness," she added playfully with a nod, as if determining something very serious. "And maybe all the sweet things you tell me, too," she went on, her smile widening to a grin as she spoke.

Victor tried his best to keep a straight face on, but when Airi accused him of being a pervert who would like to help her with her zipper, he laughed aloud, completely amused by the girl's accusation. "Oh, so that's the thanks I get for offering my help? That's very polite of you, Airlia,," he said, his eyebrows raising slightly as he caught sight of her cheeks turning slightly pink. But he said nothing more as she continued working on her zipper. Instead, the boy watched her quietly but expectantly and rather impatiently. About five minutes later, he gave a sigh and pulled out his wand, muttering a very simple spell - "Evanesco." Before their eyes, Airi's green shorts were gone. Victor couldn't help but feel rather proud of his handiwork now that the girl before him was left in only the yellow-orange two-piece bathing suit. He let his eyes admire this accomplishment for a brief second before clearing his throat slightly and his expression turned serious again. "Now can we go, or is there something else you need me to get you out of?" he asked.
Airi let out a small quick of vexation as she let go of the lining of her shorts, with a look of defeat, she was completely and utterly perplexed by the simple and stupid situation she was in. "This is just.. Useless," Airi said, she was about to take out her wand and try to remedy the problem, but to her surprise, she was beaten to the punch by Victor.

"Um... Thank you?" Airi quietly and unassuredly said, not really knowing how to behave now, she had thought Victor to be joking (obviously this was not the case), and it felt exceedingly strange to have him magic off her pants.
"Heh, no... Let's, um... Let's go," Airi said, trying to sound energetic and vaugely wondering if she'd ever get back her green shorts and just where, exactly they had gone.

Airi reached out and grabbed Victor's hand, it was a simple decision and one that she made without thinking. Airi smiled up at the tall boy and pulled him along to where the shore and ocean met. Come on," Airi said, her voice was calm and even toned, but there was done underlining tone to it, some strange note, that Airi wasn't in the habit of using, it was soft and a little low.

Ferris couldn't help but grin as Vianna spoke, admitting that she didn't know exactly why she had kissed him but assumed it had something to do with his amount of cuteness along with the sweet things he told her. He was just about to respond, an amused and flattered smile on his face as he opened his mouth, when he caught sight of the watch on her left wrist. His eyes widened, "Is that time right?" he asked the girl, looking at the clock which read, '1:56'.

Victor was rather glad they were finally getting into the water. Just standing out there on the sand for all that time had begun to burn his feet and the sun was being rather unforgiving with his skin, burning at it with its high heat. He was just about to begin leading the way over to the water when Airi suddenly - and very unexpectedly for him - took a hold of his hand. Victor felt like someone had just dumped a bucket of freezing cold water on him for a very brief second, completely caught off-guard by this gesture. He wasn't the let's-hold-hands-and-walk-on-the-beach kind of guy and the fact that the hand wrapped around his was Airi's really only made everything all the much stranger. But he didn't complain or push the girl away; her smaller hand felt nice wrapped around his and it was nice to finally just walk with the girl or be with her without talking about Perry or arguing as they often did.

Vianna was a bit distracted being all charmed and dazed when Ferris then suddenly spoke, asking her if the time was right. She blinked, completely confused for a second before glancing down at her watch. At the sight of it, her eyes widened. "It is!" she gasped. She turned back to Ferris with large blue eyes before a smile began to come to her face. "C'mon, let's go!" she said, jumping up from his lap and picking up the broom from the ground, hovering it in the air for a moment before mounting and waiting for Ferris to join her.

Feris grinned as Vianna told him that the time on the watch was correct, and in a flash the girl before him was off his lap and mounting the broom. Smiling, the boy jumped on behind her so they could zoom off into the air, excitement growing in the pit of his stomach. His mum would be there in less than a few minutes. They'd be together again, he'd know where she was, perfectly fine. They didn't have to be separated anymore, and she had news for him! He couldn't help but grow increasingly more excited as he kept his arms snug around Vianna.

Vianna's blue eyes squinted slightly as the broom began to pick up speed, causing the wind to sting her eyes a bit as the pair on the broom became nothing more than just a blur in the bright blue sky. It wasn't long, not even a whole minute, before they arrived. She was about to just throw herself at the ground the way she usually did, but remembered her white dress and all the time she had just spent trying to keep it neat and clean. So she very abruptly slowed down as they neared the ground, nearly sending the two teenagers backwards and off the broom. But she managed to land without crashing, though the landing was still rather abrupt. A moment later, she was leading the way through the front garden of the house with Ferris's hand in her own, and she made her way through the large, heavy, carved wooden doors and into the house.

"Il mio Dio, Vianna, dove eravate?!" was a panicked Mrs. Vincenzi's greeting as she caught sight of the two teenagers walking inside. Beside her was Mr. Vincenzi looking somewhat tired but still very excited. And somewhere back, already in the living room, was Vince looking like a neat and very well-behaved rich little boy, his hair all combed and his clothes neat and ironed. "Come, come, she'll be arriving any second!" said Mrs. Vincenzi.

Ferris seemed a little startled by the way that Vianna landed, but didn't comment, feeling all to excited to see his mother once more. He followed the girl inside, his hand intwined with her own as they walked through the front door to see Mr. and Mrs. Vincenzi along with Vince, listening as Mrs. Vincenzi mentioned that his mother would be there any second.

As though on cue, the fireplace shook slightly before a small 'bang!' noise came to the room and Genny Montgomery (better known as Ms. Montgomery) was standing in the fireplace of the Vincenzi living room. Letting out a light sneeze, the redheaded woman climbed out of the fireplace with a small shake of her head to get the floo powder out of her bright red hair, her brown eyes opening to see a few of the Vincenzi family members. But her view was on this for only a moment as soon enough her only son was running at her with a grin, picking the short woman up with his lanky arms to give her a hug. "Mum!" he said with a grin on his pale face, "You made it!"

Ms. Montgomery let out a soft chuckle, returning the hug that her son shoved onto her, happy to see him as well. And it was on her features, the extraordinary relief that came with knowing that her son was alive and well, and back at her side. "You can put me down now Fer," the woman said with another friendly laugh, as Ferris sheepishly set his mother down the few inches he had picked her up.

Vince yawned as the others talked, rather bored with all this waiting. But it was then that the fireplace before him began to shake slightly, and from a large fire of green flames, walked out Mrs. Montgomery. The boy's crystal blue eyes widened at the sight, not having expected her to arrive right at this second, but a smile came to his face. He watched as Ferris ran over to his mother and picked her up in his arms; a soft chuckle escaped Vince's lips as he got up to his feet.

Vianna came to stand beside her parents as the three of them watched mother and son reunite. Vianna had the largest of smiles on her face, her blue eyes sparkling at the scene that unfolded before her, completely amused and endeared by it. Next to her was Mrs. Vincenzi looking like she might burst into tears over the cuteness of it all at any second, ever the sentimental one; and beside her stood Mr. Vincenzi with that large and friendly smile of his adorning his face. None of the Vincenzis made a move, though, and instead gave the mother and son their space and time to properly greet one another before deciding when it would be safe to attack Mrs. Montgomery.

As soon as Ms. Montgomery was set down she turned to look at her son with a grin on her lightly tanned face, though she was still fairly pale like Ferris. Freckles adorning her grin, she examined him for a moment before shoving his shoulder, "You look taller," she pointed out with raised red eyebrows.

"You look shorter," the boy replied, gently shoving his mother playfully in return, a grin on his pale face. "Oh, and you have floo in your hair," he pointed out teasingly, brushing off his mother's head which was a good foot or so shorter than his own.

"Watch it kid," she replied with an amused smile, standing on her toes to ruffle his curls. "Have you been eating?"

"Yes."

"You look skinny."

"Always have, Mum."

"Yeah, well, I haven't been around to watch you. For all I know you could've been skipping meals for the past five days due to some adolescent outcry."

"When have I ever skipped meals?"

"You were five. Sick with the chicken pox."

"Do I look like I have chicken pox?"

"No. But a little pale, maybe you have the flu." The woman grinned teasingly at her son, obviously poking fun at his light skin tone.

"Shut up!" he replied, shoving his mother's shoulder gently once more before both of them seemed to remember that there were other people in the room. Ferris let out a soft chuckle before leading his mother over to Vianna's parents, both sets of their near identical brown eyes warm and friendly. "Mum, this is Mr. and Mrs. Vincenzi."

The Vincenzis all stood with slightly raised eyebrows as Ferris and Mrs. Montgomery held a short and rather amusing conversation that had them chuckle every now and then. But it was really a nice sight to witness this reunion between the two of them, it almost felt like things with the kidnappers had finally been solved. And they knew this wasn't really the case, but they were almost there, and Mrs. Montgomery and Ferris finally reuniting only made them feel that much closer to their goal; that much closer to returning to their normal kidnapper-free lives.

They seemed to snap out of thought, though, as Ferris turned to Mr. and Mrs. Vincenzi and introduced the pair to his mother. Now that they were finally able to properly see the woman, Mr. and Mrs. Vincenzi both gave large and friendly grins before nearly tackling the woman in a small group hug. Mrs. Vincenzi eventually pushed her husband out of the way so she could have Mrs. Montgomery all to herself and grinned down at the slightly shorter woman. "Benvenuta alla nostra casa!" she welcomed her before giving the woman another brief and not so bone-crushing hug. "The kids have told us about everything you did for them, we're forever in debt with you," she said with a charming smile, her caramel-coloured eyes sparkling so that she resembled her daughter slightly.

Ms. Montgomery was slightly surprised as she was enveloped in a small group hug, though didn't seem to mind as she let out an amused chuckle and returned it. Soon enough she was in front of Mrs. Vincenzi mainly, and she gave a warm smile as the pretty woman greeted her in Italian before explaining that the kids had told them everything she'd done for them, and that they'd be forever in debt with her. Her brown eyes widened slightly at this, not having expected it, and gave an amused chuckle, "Honestly, it wasn't a big deal," she said with a friendly grin. "Your kids are great, really. They were no trouble," she assured them before catching sight of Vianna at their side. "Vianna!" the woman said with a grin, quickly enveloping the girl in a warm hug, her brown eyes sparkling in a way that greatly resembled her son who was off to the side watching with a warm smile.

Ms. Vincenzi pulled back from the hug, holding the girl at arm's length gently and looking at her, "Well, don't you look lovely," the observant woman said, remembering how she'd seen Vianna dress before and knowing that dresses weren't exactly in the girl's immediate wardrobe. At least, what she'd seen of her. "How's Ferris been? Have you been keeping an eye on him? Is he any trouble?"

She suddenly turned to the boy a couple steps away from them, "Ferris, you better've been nice to this girl!" she accused with raised, playful eyebrows.

Mrs. Vincenzi smiled, having expected Mrs. Montgomery's response before the redheaded woman then moved on to Vianna and greeted her with a hug. Vianna's smile widened and she returned the hug for the moment it lasted before Mrs. Montgomery pulled back and told her she looked lovely. At this, the young girl couldn't help but blush slightly; she hadn't expected her wardrobe change to be that obvious, but apparently it was. "Thank you," she replied somewhat sheepishly. And before anything else could be said, Mrs. Montgomery was asking how her son had been, if she had been keeping an eye on him and if he had been any trouble. Vianna's eyebrows rose slightly and she listened as the woman turned to her son accusingly, and she couldn't help but chuckle softly. "No, he's been great, Mrs. Montgomery," she said with a smile, giving a nod.

It was then that Vince, who had been waiting for this moment since the second he woke up because it was the key to finally eating the food at the dining room, cleared his throat loudly. "And now that Mrs. M has finally joined us - you look great, by the way, Mrs. M. Nice tan - we should go get some food," he said, beginning to shove the group out of the living room and into the dining room. "I bet she's starving, we're being horribly rude just standing here chatting!" he added, as if he was the most considerate person in the planet.

But unfortunately for the boy, his mother had other plans for him. "Vince, go find your brother and the others," she asked of him in a whisper before turning back to Mrs. Montgomery. "Please, sit anywhere."

Ms. Montgomery gave an approving smile as Vianna assured her that her son had been great, though she had expected this answer; knowing that Ferris wasn't a guy who liked to be rude to girls. Especially girls he liked. It was then that Vince spoke up, mentioning that they were all being rude just standing around chatting when they should've been eating, throwing in a compliment about her newly acquired, slightly tan skin tone. She let out a chuckle, "Why thanks, Vince, you look positively radiant yourself," she replied with an amused shake of her head before she was ushered into the dining room.

It was there that she caught sight of the gorgeously decorated table, her dark brown eyes widening at the sight, "What a beautiful table," she murmured aloud, turning to look at Mrs. Vincenzi as she told her to sit wherever she liked. "Thanks," she said with a small smile before taking the nearest seat. "Please, tell me you haven't done all of this for me," the woman said with a soft chuckle as she gazed at the seemingly never-ending table of delicious food.

"'Fraid so, Mum," Ferris said as he took a seat at his mother's side before turning to Vianna and gesturing that she sit on his other side, a warm smile on his pale face.

Vince left the room as his mother sent him off; meanwhile, Mr. and Mrs. Vincenzi took a seat at their usual places. Mrs. Vincenzi smiled and chuckled softly as Mrs. Montgomery commented on the table before asking she tell her they didn't do all of this for her. But Ferris had already answered this for her, and Mrs. Vincenzi could only nod her head in confirmation.

"It's the least we could do after what you did for the kids," said Mr. Vincenzi as he sat beside his wife, a good five inches shorter than her, his looks contrasting greatly with hers. "Ah - and don't tell us it was nothing because it most certainly was not nothing. Not everyone is willing to take a large group of teenagers into their house; most of which they don't even know, and feed them and offer them a place to sleep."

Vianna was just about to go sit at her usual place before she caught sight of Ferris gesturing for her to join his side. She smiled and headed over to his side of the table instead, taking a seat beside him. She flashed him a bright smile before turning her gaze to her parents as they addressed Mrs. Montgomery.

Ferris smiled as Vianna joined his side and gently took her hand beneath the table once she had taken a seat, unable to help himself from giving her an excited smile before turning his attention back to the conversation between his mother and Vianna's parents.

Ms. Montgomery was just about to contradict Mr. Vincenzi's statement as he told her that it was the least they could do after what she'd done, about to explain that it was nothing when the man asked her to not say just that. She gave him a weak, polite smile as he continued to explain that not everyone was willing to take a large group of teenagers into their home, feed them, and offer them a place to sleep. "Well, it may not be nothing to others, but it wasn't difficult for me," the woman said with a polite, rather warm smile. "I mean, my home is small but we managed well and everyone helped out, it wasn't as though I was some maid that did everything. Especially your children," she admitted with a friendly smile. "Vince helped with the dishes, Victor and Vianna always lending a hand whenever necessary. They were all great."

Mr. Vincenzi had now begun to pile food onto his plate as Mrs. Montgomery spoke, explaining to them that it wasn't a big deal and it's not like she was a maid who did everything. At this, Vianna's parents chuckled softly, but listened as she went on to add that everyone had helped out, that Vince helped with the dishes and Victor and Vianna lent a hand whenever necessary. At this, the pair seemed to freeze for a second. Vince - their Vince washing dishes? Mrs. Vincenzi's eyes widened, never in her life had she witnessed her lazy son being much help around the kitchen. Except when it came to eating leftovers. "Well, we're still very grateful and we hope you accept our thanks..." Mrs. Vincenzi trailed off, just realizing that she didn't know Mrs. Montgomery's first name. "Oh, how rude, we haven't even introduced ourselves!" she said, bringing her hands up in her surprise. "I'm Veronica - and this is Vittorio," she said, gesturing toward her husband who seemed a little distracted at the moment as he ate.

Vianna turned her gaze away from the adults, not really very interested in their conversation at the moment but rather on the boy beside her. "How're you feeling?" she asked him, a smile adorning her face as her blue eyes fell upon Ferris's brown ones for a moment before she turned to her plate.

Ms. Montgomery couldn't help but chuckle softly at the look of surprise on the Vincenzi parents' faces when they heard that Vince had done the dishes. Before she could ask if Vince wasn't normally this helpful, Mrs. Vincenzi seemed to realize that they'd never really introduced themselves and explained that she was Veronica and her husband was Vittorio. "Oh, well it's a pleasure to officially meet you," the woman said with an amused chuckle a friendly smile still on her freckled face. "I'm Genny," she told them in return before starting to gently compile food onto her plate.

Ferris looked over at Vianna as she spoke, a smile immediately falling back onto his pale features at the sight of her. "I'm feeling great," he admitted, gently bringing up their clasped hands to press a kiss to the back of her own as he so often did. He flashed her a grin, obviously completely thrilled with his mother's presence.

"È un piacere, Genny," said Mrs. Vincenzi with a polite smile as Mrs. Montgomery introduced herself before turning her attention to the plate before her, beginning to cut her food into small pieces.

It was then that Mr. Vincenzi looked up. "So how did it happen?" he asked before adding on to his question, "I mean, did you know about the kidnappers already before the kids showed up? Was it planned or did they just show up one day?" he went on, ignoring the rather disapproving looks Mrs. Vincenzi was throwing at him. She didn't feel this was really an appropriate topic to discuss when the poor woman had just arrived, but Mr. Vincenzi was curious and he couldn't help himself.

"I'm glad," said Vianna, turning back to Ferris with a smile before serving some pasta onto her plate. She began to take small bites from it and turned to her parents as Mr. Vincenzi bombarded Ferris's mother with questions.

Ferris's mother was enjoying the delicious food when Mr. Vincenzi asked exactly how all of it happened, curious to know whether she was aware of the kidnappers before the children had come to her door, if it was planned, or if they had just shown up. "Ah, no, actually, nothing was planned," she replied with a soft chuckle, thinking for a moment. "They just showed up one day, out of the blue, but I didn't mind. I mean, I'd just gotten a letter about a day prior that told me my son had gone missing from the camp. You can imagine what that did to me," she explained, a statement that sent Ferris's brown eyes downcast in slight shame, as though this all came back to him and he was at fault. Ms. Montgomery didn't notice however, and continued to speak, "So I was thrilled when they showed up on my doorstep. And then, Ferris explained everything to me a couple days into their stay, and when they left, so did I," she explained with a small smile.

Mr. and Mrs. Vincenzi had stopped eating for a moment to listen to Mrs. Montgomery's explanation, and they nodded their heads as she finished. Mrs. Vincenzi gave the kids a small smile and she couldn't help but feel rather amazed by it all, by how they had been able to flee from the kidnappers all this time without an elder guiding them through it all or helping them. "Your husband must've been really worried too, no?" said Mr. Vincenzi, a little curious about this before he was kicked under the table by his wife. She shot him a look, aghast with her husband's thoughtlessness. Though she figured she should've been used to it by now, after all these years.

"I'm sorry, you don't have to answer that," said Mrs. Vincenzi quietly. If there was no Mr. Montgomery in sight, then that could've meant it was a sensitive topic; what if Mrs. Montgomery was a widow or something? Mrs. Vincenzi sighed to herself and glanced over at her husband who merely gave her a small apologetic but still naturally cheery smile.

Ms. Montgomery gave a polite, knowing and forgiving smile as Mr. Vincenzi asked if her husband had been worried as well before being reprimanded by his wife. "No, no, it's alright," the woman said with a friendly smile as Mrs. Vincenzi assured her that she didn't have to answer the question. "My husband left us quite a few years back, actually," she explained, her expression never faultering from anything less than friendly, never showing any sign of uncomfortability. Whereas her son, well...he seemed more preoccupied in his food that anything. "However, when he heard of it, he was very worried," she added a little more quietly, though loud enough for the table to hear.

The boy at her side seemed to choke slightly on his bite of food, letting out a loud cough as he tried to get the bite of pasta down his throat. Once he successfully managed to clear his only passage for oxygen, he turned wide brown eyes to the woman at his side, "Excuse me?"

Ms. Montgomery gave a weak smile, "Yeah..." she said with a soft chuckle, "Nate's been...He's..." she trailed off, unsure of how to start. "I told you I had a lot to explain."

Eyebrows raised and brown eyes wide, Ferris gave a more quiet, almost grossed out, "Nate? You're calling him Nate again?"

"Ah," Mr. Vincenzi nodded his head understandingly as Mrs. Montgomery explained to them that Mr. Montgomery had left them a few years back, but he had been worried when he heard the news about what had happened with their son. It was then that Ferris seemed to choke, and he shared words with his mother that left the others at the table looking down at their plates a little awkwardly. This was not a conversation they felt right listening to, and so they were quick to distract themselves with the food on their plates.

Vianna blinked at the pair sitting next to her and sunk a bit in her seat before turning back to her pasta. Oh, this was a bit uncomfortable... she really hoped whatever Mrs. Montgomery would eventually explain to her son during their private time would be good news and not bad.

Simultaneously the pair of mother and son seemed to realize that they were still with other people and their heads turned to see their company with their gazes at their plates. "We'll discuss this later, Fer," the woman said as her son turned back to her with confusion in his eyes. And not wanting to make their company any more uncomfortable, he gave a tight nod before turning back to his food and Ms. Montgomery returned her eyes to the couple across from her. "Anyway, yes, he was a bit concerned," she said, giving a light chuckle which honestly sounded as though nothing awkward had been stated. Ms. Montgomery always seemed to have a way of smoothing things over; of making her company feel comfortable, like they'd been friends for years and nothing could break the nice conversation they were having. The redhead's magic even seemed to work on her son who loosened up just slightly on his tight posture, though he still shot a glance over at Vianna, one filled with complete confusion and surprise.

"I can imagine," muttered Mrs. Vincenzi as Mrs. Montgomery confirmed that Mr. Montgomery had, indeed, been worried when the news came about their son. Of course, this was very easy for her to understand since they had also received the same letter concerning all three of the Vincenzi kids. "It was horribly frightening when Victor finally wrote to us and explained what had happened; I don't think I'll ever trust another school professor again," she said, her brows furrowing slightly. Teachers were supposed to take care of their students, teach them new things, but after this experience she couldn't help feel a little paranoid about who she left her kids with; even though they weren't necessarily children anymore.

"Ah, but it will all be over very soon!" came in Mr. Vincenzi with a large grin on his tanned face, looking much like a beard-less Italian Santa Claus. "We went to the ministry a couple days ago and they're already working on the case; they have all the information form all the kids, including the kidnappers' current location, so if we're lucky... this should be over in only a couple weeks," he said, his tones cheery and enthusiastic, as if he had been the one kidnapped himself.

Vianna couldn't help but smile as her father very cheerfully decided that the whole deal with the kidnappers would be over soon before turning to Ferris, only to find his brown eyes on hers looking completely confused and surprised. She gave him a weak smile, but knew not what to say. This was something she had never had to comfort him - or anyone, really - about, and the best she could do at the moment was let go of the knife in her hand and take Ferris's hand instead, holding it tightly in her own smaller one.
