| | | Office of Professor Amstern Across from the History of Magic classroom, you will find the door to Professor Vashti Amstern’s office. The door is usually open during office hours, unless she is currently meeting with someone.
Inside the office is a large mahogany desk, a comfortable dark brown chair behind it, and two dark blue armchairs in front of it. The top of the desk is kept clean and neat. At various times there may be a few open books or stacks of homework to grade in front of her, but it is rarely left messy or disorganized. There are also a number of photos of Professor Amstern with her late husband, her children, and her grandchildren at the corner of her desk.
Large wooden bookshelves fill the walls behind her desk and on the left and right sides of the room. The books cover a vast array of time periods and events in history. Some are newer and in excellent condition, others are older and in good condition, and others are older still, well-worn and well-loved. One shelf behind the desk contains a number of rare antique editions. Professor Amstern is unlikely to lend these out, but she may allow you to borrow one of the others if all the copies of it in the school library have been checked out.
In front of the window stands an owl perch. The professor’s owl, Minerva, is usually in the owlery with the other owls when she’s not delivering a letter, but sometimes she can be found visiting the office when she wants some quiet time (and extra treats).
If you need to speak with Professor Amstern, please knock, and she will be with you shortly. |

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf The corridor outside Professor Amstern's office felt incredibly long, almost never ending.
Nyle paused a few steps from the door, adjusting the strap of his satchel on his shoulder even though it didn't need adjusting. He'd changed his mind twice on the walk here. Three times, actually. Four. Eh, who was actually keeping count at this point? It would have been easier to just continue on as he had been, it had been working for him — so he had convinced himself at least — and the tightening in his chest and the sharper edges to his temper lately were just OWL stress and not because of... all that.
But summer had happened. His uncle knew everything. And Professor Amstern was unfortunately in the loop now as his Head of House.
Not to mention she had clearly noticed things. Things that he had previously gotten away with.
He lifted his hand to knock, hesitated midair, then exhaled slowly through his nose. What was one more lap up and down the corridor to make it seven trips? He moved to pivot, but something in him charged forward and before his brain could catch up with his body, the tall blonde found himself rapping his knuckles against the wood.
The sound felt louder than it probably was.

| Baguette | there is no D in my name | TRAITORclaw | Queenie of Narnia The cramping in her hand told her it was time for a break. Vashti had completed grading a number of essays already, now stacked neatly on the right corner of her desk, but there was still a large stack on the left waiting to be graded. But, as much as she wanted to continue so she could finish and check it off her to-do list, it wouldn't help to ignore the way her hand was feeling.
So she got to her feet and turned to look out the window, stretching her hand as she admired the grounds. No matter the weather, it was often quite the sight to behold.
And then came the knock at the door. Perfect timing, one might say. "Just a moment, please," she called.
Her wand slid into her hand, and with a flick, the essays filed themselves away into their appropriate folders. She re-holstered her wand as she moved to the door.
Opening the door, Vashti smiled warmly, not surprised upon seeing who her visitor was. "Ah, Mr. Harden, hello. It's wonderful to see you. Please, come in." She stepped to the side, holding the door open for him.

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf Professor Amstern did not possess an icy disposition. Even before she became his Head of House, he never found her to be a woman of sharp frost or cutting wind. If anything, she carried the steady warmth of a well-tended greenhouse: light filtering through glass, careful hands repotting what had outgrown its container, patience measured in seasons rather than moments.
And yet, despite that gentleness, his whole body went rigid.
Not because he expected harm, but because she was the sort who noticed when leaves began to curl at the edges―and he had an abundance of those.
"Professor," he greeted, offering a polite, restrained smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.
He stepped inside carefully, as though the office were smaller than it actually was. His shoulders angled in just slightly, satchel strap tugged closer to his frame, long limbs mindful of corners and furniture. He'd always been tall, but in moments like this he carried it like an apology. "Thank you," he added quietly.
For a moment, he remained standing. His gaze skimmed the room without really seeing it, taking in the neat stacks of parchment and grading, the window, the desk. A safe, orderly space. One that invited honesty in a way that made his chest tighten. He shifted his weight. "I—" The word stalled. He cleared his throat, trying again. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything. I can always come back another time."
Only he was certain that he wasn't. They both knew why he was here.
His fingers brushed the strap of his satchel again before finally letting it slide off his shoulder. He set it down beside the chair opposite her desk but didn't sit just yet, as though he hadn't quite earned the right. He drew in a slow breath, eyes finally lifting to meet hers. There was resistance there... not to her, but to the act of admitting that this version of himself had begun to crack. Had been cracking.
He exhaled through his nose, shoulders easing only slightly. "I'm not entirely sure where to start," he admitted quietly, eyes shifting back to the tops of his shoes.
