Sending Up Harry and Hobbits
Those with elvish tattoos and Hogwarts varsity jackets will be dismayed to learn that their cinematic soul mates, "Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter," will be fodder for MGM's newest spoof, "Henry Bates and the Sorcerer's Balls." Originally billed as "Gigli Reloaded," "Henry Bates" will satirize the fantasy film much as "Spaceballs" did "Star Wars." The masterminds, if you can call them that, behind the project are David Morgasen, James R. Stein and Timothy Stack, who worked alongside the prince of irreverence, Howard Stern, on his "Son of the Beach" series on FX. The trio has two weeks to polish the script bought by MGM last week. The studio hopes to release the film while the "Rings" trilogy and "Potter" epic are fresh in viewers' minds.
The story has all the hallmarks of a fantasy feature. There's a good wizard, Gandolfini, who battles an evil wizard, Enron. The young Bates embarks on a Frodoesque mission to reclaim the kingdom of Middlefinger, of which he is the rightful heir. And there's a race of folk called the Bobbits, a people under a bizarre sexual spell (think Lorena).
Morgasen says the writers hope to keep the spoof at a PG-13. No shooting date has been announced, but MGM says filming is likely to start early next year.
