According to CBBC Newsround, Potter fans have been leaping to JK Rowling's defence after a top author rubbished her books about the boy wizard.
The author, a woman called AS Byatt, said that JK's books weren't clever enough. She said the Potter novels were for people who didn't have too much imagination. She reckons Potter fans probably get their inspiration from things like cartoons, reality TV and soaps.
But one book critic has said that AS Byatt is jealous of JK's success. Other Potter fans have said that she's a snob.
Although she's not too popular with some Potter fans, AS Byatt is a generally well-respected author. She has written 22 novels and in 1990 won a prestigious literary award called the Booker prize.
But JK Rowling seems to be keeping out of the debate.
So far, her response to AS Byatt's remarks has been: "No comment!"
No imagination. Right. |

I read about that! IT's really sad coz even tho H.P may not have the best vocabulary (spelling?) and everything, at least we enjoy reading it. My primary school teacher shouted at me for reading a book that she said was too young for me (even tho the recomended age was older!) and I didn't read for about six years until HP came out!

Yeah, she is WAY jealous, because she can't admit there's a better author than her. *laughs* What a freak! I hate people like that! Go JKR! Keep up the good work, and keep making her jealous!

AS Byatt is only trying to get people to notice her. By bad monthing the number one selling book in the world, people will start taking about her and some may even read her works. Just look what we are doing right now.
People will try using the Harry Potter's book to get their name in the news. If we stop listen to them, they will go away.

Well,I dont know who that women is..and Ive never read any of her books..so I cant really critisice her,but even though Harry Potter might not have an extremely extent vocabulary its perfect for reading and it makes you hang on to every word(simple though they may be)And about the imagination point well...HP might be lets say based...... on other books..(hem hem..Lotr)but I still think their fabulous and ingenious and I really like the HP books whatver the world may say! You rule JKR!!! :sorcerer:

What you have to remember about Harry books is they are for children and the Vocabulary used in most of the dialect is the same sort that British children are using at the time she is writing the books.Whilst this dosent help are friends around the world 100% its not that hard to work out. She of course can't use all the things children say as it would make the books no longer be books for children.(and the young at heart)
As for the Potter novels been for people who dont have too much imagination, all i can say to that is they are the first set of books in about 16 years that i havent guessed what was going to happen next. and at about 70 books a year were talking about 1100 books where i worked out whats going to happen before im half way trough.

It's obvious, Booker prize or not, she did not give them a thorough read. The books are resplendant with archetypes and I am sure if Joseph Campbell were still alive he could refute her far better than I.

Oops, forgot to log in.
Great literature is that which touches the hearts and lives of it's readers. I think one can safely say that Ms. Rowling's works have met that standard.

All that matters is that we believe that Harry Potter is the best book and will always be! I mean people will say that but we have to remember the truth! | |

She has obviously not read the books throughly at all. She would know that these books expand the childs (and adults) imagination. Before the Harry Potter books, I really didnt like reading. She seems to be very close-minded. And does anyone else think of Umbridge when looking at her picture on CBBS Newsround? She has the looks and the personality..lol.

Hmmm......looks to me, that AS* Byatt is jealous of JK Rowling's success......no imagination, what nerve to put down children's literature-I'd like to see her books sell in 40 different languages, be made into a movie, or be in the world records book for a best selling novel! I sure hope you're reading this you stuck-up snob! Instead of sticking your nose up to more successful authors than yourself, you should stick your nose down in ashame for what a snob you are, and then bury that nose of yours in a REAL novel-Harry Potter!, written by the successful author: JK Rowling! :sorcerer:
