J.K.Rowling updates site with warning

In addition to the news about iTunes, J.K.Rowling has updated her website, warning fans in regards to fake 'autographed' merchandise.

Quote:

E-Bay seem unable to control or to take preventative steps to avoid users of their site offering forged Harry Potter merchandise for sale to innocent fans who might wish to purchase such goods; they also continue to refuse to accept any responsibility for allowing forged Harry Potter merchandise to be offered for sale on their site (while, of course, profit is made from the sale of said merchandise).

So it remains for me to warn you personally: 'bonded certificates of authenticity' do not guarantee that I have ever been on the same continent of the book in question, let alone signed it. As far as I can tell from watching the 'signed' Harry Potter merchandise on e-Bay, for every (as far as I can tell) genuine signature there are six to ten fakes. Therefore, I am now advising Harry Potter fans in search of rare and/or signed editions and also audio digital files that it is much safer to buy from reputable / authorised book dealers only rather than e-Bay and other similar auction houses.

I would be delighted if the online community of Harry Potter fans canvassed e-Bay directly, asking that they be protected against this exploitation.

That stinks that people are doing that!!!! :toilet2:

slythringurl04 09-07-2005 09:22 PM

thats nice.. that she warns us about things like these..

Nixhearted 09-07-2005 09:24 PM

It's really great that she got the time to write that because I bet there are many out there who have already fallen victim to such theft. Of course you'd be excited to find memoriabilia signed by JK, but personally, if I got something signed by Her Geniosity, would I really go and sell it on e-bay?

Take everything with a pinch of salt! You can never tell how far Voldemort's clutches have gone around the world. You know, due to all the false rumours and such false stuff, it's a wonder we all don't have high blood pressure.

Mistress Vondella 09-07-2005 09:25 PM

*shrugs* Can't blame ebay, they can't tell people they CANT sell something. That would lead to a lawsuit.

My advice would be to just not buy it off of ebay. Or, if you do, check it out upon delivery and then sue the person who sold it, if it is a fake.

That's you. There was one of our members (i believe) who got to meet JK and get stuff like that (the cub reporters) and he/she said that it was overheard that several of the cub reporters were already talking about selling the item(s) on Ebay.

That's really bad what fans are doing "fake 'autographed' merchandise". It's good to see JKR warning them!! Go girl! lol

OtterySt.Catchpole 09-07-2005 09:45 PM

Ottery is...annoyed at all the mean people out there, and the gullible ones too...grr

JKR is sooooooooooooooooooo cool to worry about her fans like that. :loved:

I would love to get an autographed copy of one of her books, but I'd never sell it on E-Bay...or ever for that matter...what kind of a fan would I be then? <_<

I'm just going to camp out at her house in Scotland, in a little box...then maybe she'll take pity on me...*Ottery is evil, using the Ottery eye's angle* No one can resist them...Mwahahahahahahaha

Lissydove 09-07-2005 09:49 PM

It's terrible that it would be necessary to make warnings about phoney merchandise. Sadly, I bet many autographs out there are fake.

I,for one, would never pass off a phoney...

*coughlovetheD/GavvyOtterycough*

Ugh...E-Bay is evil. I don't buy anything from it...

Wayfarer 09-07-2005 09:54 PM

Ottery that's the problem they really aren't fans when they get the autographs or someone or some thing really sad has forced them to sell it

luckyangelkmf 09-07-2005 10:10 PM

Well, thanx for the warning...but i don't go on e-bay.

katiebell 09-07-2005 10:14 PM

Well, I'm off to send my e-mail to e-Bay, per Jo's request.

phoenixtears489 09-07-2005 10:16 PM

I think its just better not to buy things like that from eBay. You have no way of knowing if it is real or not.

It wasn't one of our members, it was one of the Canadian winners. But she did say she heard some reporters mentioning how they were going to sell stuff on eBay, which I think she was disgusted at. As would I be. To be among that 70 would be an honour. To go and taint that by profiteering from it? That's wrong in my books, considering the hundreds of thousands of genuine fans who would've easily given an arm and a leg just to be there.

The_Red_Queen 09-07-2005 10:39 PM

How nice! ;)

GanymedeCraft17 09-07-2005 11:07 PM

What an awful thing for someone to do... *smacks the awful people*

Wonderstruck 09-08-2005 12:02 AM

*shakes head* It's horrible what people will do to get money these days. I mean why can't people just earn their money the truthful way? I mean it makes you feel better too to know that you earned that money by working hard. Although that must be asking for too much. Nice of J.K. Rowling to give her fans a heads up.

Honky_Tonks15 09-08-2005 12:09 AM

Kinda sad what people will do for money. Sky-dive, yes, (i'd do it with or without being paid) But forge one of the best authors of all time's signature, no. I dont think malfoy is even that low.

Lemonlimeoranges 09-08-2005 12:21 AM

I'm glad she warned us, that was nice of her! Its awful that anyone would take advantage of people like that *Spits on them*.

Olivia Malfoy 09-08-2005 02:19 AM

That's awful! Cause you know alot of people would fall for it! But, it's so great of J.K. to warn her fans!!^_^

Gryfindor_Seeker 09-08-2005 02:42 AM

she's so nice! It's too bad people are twisted enough to do this

Nabs 09-08-2005 03:54 AM

its really cool that JK actually cares about her fans buying fake autographs.but why would anyone want to BUY an autograph? i dont understand the concept,a fan receives an autograph as proof that he/she has met the author/actor etc. so isnt buying it kinda beating the purpose?

Aww, poo, I thought we were special to get one of our members there, oh well. I would be disgusted as well. *pets the signed merchandise I do own* I'll never sell them! Never!

Foxy Dancer Chick 924 09-08-2005 04:31 AM

That is so shallow of people, some people are so stupid, I hate stupid people.

Stellar_Days_Starry_Nites 09-08-2005 05:33 AM

that tells you alot about fans out there. like me, heck, i probably wouldn't have known the difference between jkr's signature and a phony unless i was comparing the two. the nerve of people to pass off fakes just to earn money! it was awfully nice of JK to write a 'Heed My Warning" type thing on her site! ^.^
