J.K. Rowling donates £1 million to Labour party

It is being reported today that J.K. Rowling has given a £1 million donation to the Labour party. Jo is known to be a good friend of the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, and his wife Sarah, and has worked with both of them in past for charitable purposes.

Quote:

She [J.K. Rowling] said: "I believe that poor and vulnerable families will fare much better under the Labour Party than they would under a Cameron-led Conservative Party.

"Gordon Brown has consistently prioritised and introduced measures that will save as many children as possible from a life lacking in opportunity or choice.

"The Labour government has reversed the long-term trend in child poverty, and is one of the leading EU countries in combating child poverty."
In the past Jo has written forewords for Brown's books and worked with him and his wife to help combat child poverty.

That's really nice!

gandalfgirl 09-20-2008 01:38 PM

That was nice of her.

It is her money and she felt so strongly about it - she donated. I am impressed with her and grateful she has the ability to do take such actions.

Disneymaniac 09-20-2008 02:44 PM

Argh *keeps mouth shut*

I am sure that there are better things she could've spent that money on. Like NSPCC, which also helps with child welfare. But it is her money I guess, and if she feels Gordon Brown is a worthy cause, then that is her call.

Ginevra_P 09-20-2008 03:03 PM

That's very nice of her!

Jo founded a children's charity; The Children's High Level group.

Then she could've put the money into that. I am just anti-Labour right now.

jain 09-20-2008 03:38 PM

i'm disapointed. While she has every right to do what she wants with her money, why make it public. Politics should be a private matter, what does that say to her fans that support the other parties. Still, least it's in the open, given the sleaze that seems to attach it's self to political Party donations these days.

InTheirBadnessReign 09-20-2008 03:46 PM

GAAH WHY. I think the thing about the children is nice, but WHY LABOUR?

[/politicalviews]

Very nice of her, though. ^_^

MeredithRodneyMckay 09-20-2008 03:54 PM

Personally I would never, ever give the Labour party anything.
I'd give it to a charity that deserved it.
But it is her money..she can do as she chooses.

Kazters 09-20-2008 03:57 PM

god having heard this on the news it dosent bother me she is free to spend her money on what she wants. Many people give money to political party's. Yes at the moment labour arent the most popular party at the moment and in fact where Jo lives they arent even the party with the majority over Scotland!

A lot of horrible things have been said about jo today and none is deserved no one says anything of people giving money to say the American presidental candidates of is she give it to the conservitives which i hope she woulnt do.

Ms_Nessa24 09-20-2008 03:59 PM

That was Very Generous Of Her!

Can you pass the duct tape please? :)

I feel she should have given the money directly to a charitable organization, and not a politician or a particular political party, if she feels so strongly about any particular issues.

EmmaRiddle 09-20-2008 04:57 PM

^ She does do that, though.

It's her choice at the end of the day. Our feelings shouldn't come into it.

BR1TN3YY 09-21-2008 01:13 AM

I don't think it should of been made public but as most people have said, it is her money she can do what she wants with it. Jo has donated alot of money to other charitys so i don't think this is a really big deal.

It has to, otherwise they would be accused of taking back-handers. It's a lose-lose situation, really.

bitsyandtank 09-22-2008 01:07 PM

Either way it's her money. She can do with it what she wants. It's better than her blowing it on a bunch of junk. At least she's trying to help others.
