'Goblet of Fire' gets an M rating in Australia

'Goblet of Fire' has been given an M rating in Australia. This means it is recommended for those who are 15 and over however there is no actual restriction on who can see the film or whether parents should accompany children to see it. The reasons given were 'Moderate fantasy violence' which 'contains material that requires a mature perspective.'

15! wow. then the kids here are lucky. Anywho. 1st to post! w00tw00t!

Padie 11-09-2005 02:47 PM

15? Whoa! Thank god I don't live there!

half blood queen 11-09-2005 03:18 PM

15?!?! I'm only 12! So glad I don't live there.

verysolange 11-09-2005 03:28 PM

15? that's a bit exagerated.. I mean at the age of 10/11 you know what's scary or not!

I agree.

Lisal 11-09-2005 04:32 PM

god, this is crazy

Nabs 11-09-2005 04:32 PM

wow! i cant wait! all this violence ratings...bwahaha

Anirock 11-09-2005 04:41 PM

15?!? not a children's book now, huh if the movie has this rating?

Leeness 11-09-2005 04:41 PM

15 and over? I think thats a bit harsh, but i'm not to sure how the Australian system works. But as long as everyone can get a chance to see it if they want to.

loony 4 ........ 11-09-2005 04:52 PM

^ Yes thats a bit mean. I mean there are so many HP fans who are not even teenagers.......

Kitty Loves Steps 11-09-2005 04:54 PM

Whoa i know some people in OZ. Luckily they are older than 15.

But it does say that they dont have to have a parent with them!! I think thats strange seeing as they say its suitable for 15s and over!

Mrs Felton 11-09-2005 05:25 PM

Kind of over-exaggerating the violence now.. 15 is a bit over the top.. But they can still get in.

annalle 11-09-2005 05:55 PM

15?!
I canīt wait to see it, but i life in austria..... so i`ve to wait till 15 nov.

Lady_Jezz 11-09-2005 06:06 PM

wow, 15, that's pretty old.....but if noone is checking up on it, it doesn't really matter all that much. I remember I once went to the cinema in Brussels (Belgium) and we wanted to see 'Go', it was rated for 16 and older, I was still 15, so because of me, everyone had to see a diff movie, I felt so bad about that, but they really checked my ID for it....

Do you know what GoF is rated in the Netherlands??? I must have missed it, or was it like 12 or something....

Hey annalle, question...doesn't it bother you that you have to watch the film in German??? I mean, it's spoken-over isn't it?! I once tried to watch an American film while in Austria...well, the film sucked anyway, but I thought it was soooo annoying to not hear the real voices....

foreverxlonely48 11-09-2005 07:48 PM

15? wow....i think that's a bit too harsh but i don't know their movie rating system though. i think the US rating (pg-13) is a good area for the movie but that's just my opinion.

mione_girlgwp 11-09-2005 08:14 PM

wow 15. Thats really high. But hey whatever floats your boat

HOSAgirl 11-09-2005 08:22 PM

That is really harsh. I've seen worse stuff on T.V. that has a PG rating.

beatboxing_chipmunk 11-09-2005 08:25 PM

I think that it's good that HP is finally being recognized as more than a children's series.

Hermionespell 11-09-2005 08:36 PM

I'm glad Harry Potter is being recognized as more than a children's book/movie. Because, it's really not! (Well, not only ;D)

Harry Potter rocks!

18th of November is coming soon ;D

cocogodessmegrly1 11-09-2005 09:20 PM

Wow! thats actually ok, since I dont live there I am not as concerned with that rating M, but I guess it can be expected.

tomfeltonfanbigtime 11-09-2005 09:22 PM

wow im really glad i live in the us not Australia

L.a.m.b 11-09-2005 09:24 PM

15?! whoa it can't be that scray i mean at 11 to 12 and 13 u should be fine!

Griffiths123 11-09-2005 09:34 PM

i think its good that it got an M rating. Lets people know that this story aint very "Kiddy" and for children all the time. I live in Aust and im 18 in 4 weeks so i can see it noprobs

Griffiths123 11-09-2005 09:47 PM

actually it isnt rated M 15+, just M. The rating system slightly changed recently and i you dont need to be 15 and over to see it. Its recomended that you be 15 +. check it our here: http://www.oflc.gov.au/content.html?...&record=209815

slythringurl04 11-09-2005 10:19 PM

hmm. interesting

Emma-Watson-admirer 11-09-2005 10:58 PM

if the goblet of fire is 15 hen what will the 5th book be!!!!!!!

Fortune_Cookie 11-09-2005 11:46 PM

That's a pretty strict rating, but at least you still can see it if you're younger than that age.

princess of*hp* 11-10-2005 12:18 AM

Woah, dude! Mature...

nathanieljb 11-10-2005 12:34 AM

Rating Systems in Australia are actually quite good.

G - These films are for general viewing. The content is very mild.

PG - These films contain material that a parent might need to explain to younger children. The content is mild.

M - These films contain material that requires a mature perspective. The content is moderate. (NO RESTRICTION)

M 15+ - People under 15 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian for the duration of the film in the cinema. Parental permission to see an MA 15+ film is not sufficient. People under 15 are not permitted to hire or buy films classified MA 15+.
The content is strong.

R - People under 18 cannot see these films in the cinema or buy or hire them. High impact content.

Its actually quite a good raiting.

Kurisuchiina 11-10-2005 12:36 AM

The M rating just says that it's recommended for mature audiences, and the content is moderate in impact. ANYBODY can go see an M-rated film, but be aware that it is for MATURE audiences, and if you're under the age of 12, they're probably going to expect parental guidance.

I'm expecting OotP to get an MA 15+. This means that the content is strong in impact, and it's not suitable for people under 15. If you're under 15, you must be accompanied by an adult.

Don't confuse M with MA 15+. I think it's good it got an M rating, because it's not that very appropriate with all the 5 and 6 year olds going. He's getting older now, the story is getting darker, it is not a children's story which everyone presumes. The characters are maturing, which is why it deserves a mature rating. Stop saying that it's crazy and you're glad you don't live in Australia and it's harsh unless you actually live in Australia and know the ratings very well!

EmmaRiddle 11-10-2005 12:42 AM

Yeah I did kind of saying it's not actually restrictive. So much for Potter fans actually reading, eh Chris?

BreBear 11-10-2005 01:17 AM

that seems a bit strange. i mean come on! ITS HARRY POTTER!

Griffiths123 11-10-2005 01:34 AM

i dont think OOTP will get MA, maybe HBP. And there is also a new rating in Aust "X". Ill leave your imagination to figure out whats in those type of films...

And Kurisuchiina i dont think u get the concept that there are 'M' ratings, 'M 15+' and 'MA 15+'. Just letting u know.

nathanieljb 11-10-2005 01:43 AM

Nah I think Ootp will get a MA-15+ just because of the final 3 chapters. A few people die in that book, most being death eaters but some more significant (dont want to spoil anything). Curses are a plenty and if they do the curses properly, seeing the cruxios curse being applied and the people in the hospital is going to be very very full on.

cheeky_weasley 11-10-2005 02:41 AM

OH YEAH!!!! I just can't wait anymore......

HAhahaha Australia is so hardcore!

I love Aust YAYNESS! :bounce: :D

I'm still miffed about the waiting till Dec thing but I'm not so P'd as I was before! *runs off coz tickets are now on sale online :shifty:*

EDIT: As usual I have totally skipped over previous comments in order to have my say (won't be doing that again).
I'm hurt disappointed at all the comments that have been saying they feel glad they don't live in Australia. I'm sure Emma has said quite clearly that those under the age of 15 can most definately see it as long as they have adult supervision.

This means that there are no restrictions on younger veiwers and therefore any HP lover can see it (given they are ready for it because the movie is dark...My bro is 8 & he is mature enough to see it so I'm very proud taking him). I'm just saying this as a proud Australian, HP lover and someone that just wants everyone to be happy. I just don't want anyone having misconceptions about my country is all... :D

prettyinpink 11-10-2005 02:43 AM

thats a pretty strict rating.....

HarryPotterlovr101 11-10-2005 02:48 AM

That's kinda like PG-13 in the US, because though it is advised not to be under 13 to see it, anyone can still go.
NOVEMBER 18, 9 DAYS and COUNTING...

Rupert_Grint_Luver_4ever 11-10-2005 02:59 AM

Doesn't matter where I live! I'm 15. But I live in California in the USA. Still...
Doesn't matter! So M must stand for PG-13 here in the US.

Beav42 11-10-2005 03:51 AM

really? YES! no little kids!
How come everyone refers to it as a 'kids' thing. It's really advanced, but I suppose the people who haven't read the books dont know that.

Luna Loveg00d 11-10-2005 03:59 AM

WOOH! YES! If i lived in Australia, that means i could see the movie, because i officially turned 15 on sunday. It's kind of funny because i was reading this and i'm like "Wow, i wouldn't be able to go see the movie in Australia." And then i remembered i could!

...only i live in the US. :erm:

Lupin Jr 11-10-2005 05:35 AM

They said that PoA was going to be M, and by the time it was released it was PG. I can see the same thing happening, they did a few campaigns on Sunrise last year and people came to their senses. It doesn't bother me too much, I am still going to be able to go ('m older then 15, obviously) but I know that this is only going to enhance younger teenagers interest in going.

MrzDaniel<A>Radcliffe 11-10-2005 06:19 AM

Ummm i'm from australia and "M" rating means nothing... either does "M 15+", Only "MA 15+" Restricts people under 18 seeing a film. So anyone can go see it.

There isn't an M 15+ in Australia.

Go see for yourself.

Simple Muggle 11-10-2005 08:17 AM

15? whoa!

valera 11-10-2005 08:31 AM

M in Australia it's like PG13 in the US, so it's the same isn't it?

falling from grace 11-10-2005 11:42 AM

I wonder if they realized that most kids finished the books by the time they were 15.

... and want to see the movies.

padfoot92 11-10-2005 09:50 PM

cool people can not say harry potter is for children anymore

luckyladybug 11-10-2005 10:49 PM

Wow.... Glad I'm old enough for that.... :shifty:

luckyangelkmf 11-11-2005 01:44 AM

WOW!!! It's like there random rating all across the world!!

theaussiebillywig 11-11-2005 03:12 AM

Gosh, some people really need to read! lol! Like many people have already pointed out, an M rating in Australia isn't that bad. It's probably better than the rating that it got in Britain...don't children under 12 have to be accompanied by an adult there? But with the M rating here in Australia, anyone can go see it...it's just not recommended for people under 15.

I personally think it's really good that it's rated M! I doubt many kids won't be allowed to see it; if they've read the book, they'll know what to expect. But i think it'll gain a new audience...all the people who think Harry Potter is childish might start to realise that it's not just for litte kids.

Monjoi 11-11-2005 05:58 AM

Yay! I'm all for the M rating...it's not as if kids wont be able to watch the movie, there'll just be alot less of them :D

Umm it's a good thing for here! People have all these issues thinking Harry Potter is for kids, with an M rating alot of that stigma will go away.

I am soooo happy about this!!!! also alot of those little brats wont be in there going *weeee harry potter im the biggest fan even though im 4 and cant read!!!*

HPrulez... 11-11-2005 02:14 PM

It is lucky tt i do not live there but anyhow i m oredi 15...
But i wonder if there is any country tt oso has this age limit...

Rovie 11-12-2005 03:26 PM

^ Dude, read! It's not an age limit it only means it's not recommended for people under 15, there aren't any actual restrictions.

 it's funny because all the Aussies are going "It's not that bad!", while the people from other places are saying it's like the end of the world.

danfan 11-12-2005 03:54 PM

age ain't nothin' but a number

VCD's? Oh you mean the PIRATED movies you buy from Malaysia and China, or some shifty store in an alleyway in the city?

Now is the time, where I point at you and laugh for assuming without prior knowledge or facts. I've only actually posted around 1000 posts. It's a long story, but I don't feel like telling you.
