Deathly Hallows is a two-parter, David Yates to direct (UPDATED)

According to the Los Angeles Times, Warner Bros plans to announce officially tomorrow that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be two films, written by Steve Kloves. Additionally, David Yates is signed on two direct both parts, which will be named Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II.

The report includes comments by Dan Radcliffe made during a set visit last week:

Quote:

I think it's the only way you can do it without cutting out a huge portion of the book. There have been compartmentalized subplots in the other books that have made them easier to cut -- although those cuts were still to the horror of some fans -- but the seventh book doesn't really have any subplots. It's one driving, pounding story from the word go.
Additionally, producer David Heyman denies that the move is an effort to make more money.

Quote:

I swear to you it was born out of purely creative reasons. Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing Quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. [Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare] and those subplots ... but with the seventh, that can't be done.
Quote:

The question will be, where do you break it? And how do you make them one but two separate and distinct stories? Do you break it with a moment of suspense or one of resolution? These are the interesting challenges. But each book has presented its challenges.
Heyman also noted that he was nervous about J.K. Rowling's reaction, but that she was quick to agree.

Quote:

I went to Jo and she was cool with it, and that was quite a relief.
Both films will be shot concurrently, with Deathly Hallows Part 1 being released in November 2010 and Part 2 hitting theaters in May 2011.

UPDATE: Warner Bros. has sent us an official statement where Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, states:

Quote:

“It has been an honor for our studio to be entrusted with bringing J.K. Rowling’s extraordinary book series to the screen, and we have always felt a great responsibility to be true to her vision. In concluding the film franchise, we recognized that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is packed with vital plot points that complete the story arcs of all of its beloved characters. That said, we feel that the best way to do the book, and its many fans, justice is to expand the screen adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and release the film in two parts. We could not imagine the final chapter of the film franchise being in better hands than those of David Yates.”
Producer David Heyman discusses David Yates directing the final films:

Quote:

“I am thrilled that David Yates is returning to direct the Deathly Hallows. He is both inspired and inspiring and is a passionate fan of the remarkable world and characters Jo has created. I know he will lead our incomparable cast and crew—most of whom have been with us since the very beginning—in bringing the series to the unforgettable conclusion it deserves.”
David Yates talks about how thrilled he is to complete the series:

Quote:

“I’ve had great pleasure working with a tremendous cast and crew thus far, on both the Order of the Phoenix and the Half-Blood Prince. It’s a wonderful world to work in and be part of and to create within, and I consider it a great privilege to continue to bring Jo’s extraordinary world to the screen, and to be the director to complete this epic and exhilarating journey.”

Heck yeah!

Unless the two parts are like six months apart from each other, I will not survive that.
(Edit: It says at TLC that the two parts will be released Nov. 2010 and May 2011... Oh noes. :( Who wants my stuff?)

And bleh to Yates directing. He'll do a decent job I guess, but I would have liked a somewhat more daring director.

[edit]
First, of all places.

Yeah, I was devastated abbout cutting out the Quidditch stuff and SPEW but I'm actually flexible with cutting DH into two parts now, that way, they can surely include EVERYTHING. ^_^

*is sooooo excited*

I'm thrilled for all the movies, but then I just get to thinking that after HBP and DH comes out (movies), it will be officially OVER. At that point there will be no more books or movies to ever look forward to again. Unless, we get that encyclopedia from JK, of course.

I was hoping DH would be two parts, so it would last that much more longer!!

caseym 03-12-2008 09:51 PM

I'm just wondering how they are going to work in Ron's comment about the House elves for that kiss.....I mean, they cut out SPEW which shows Hermione's devotion to elevating the status of House elves....is it just me or is it going to be slightly random without that...?

But I LOVE the idea of splitting it in two...they should have done that with HBP too.....I can't wait for 2010 and 2011 now!

also, isn't it neat that they're planning the release around the time of the theme park opening? :) (At least I think that's the same time.... )

Fallon Chanel 03-12-2008 09:52 PM

That is so STUPID! I'm furious! I don't want to wait that long! I can't believe them. They should have made it one long movie. This is unfair. I'm really mad about this.

the.time.is.now 03-12-2008 09:54 PM

That's crazy ... I knew it was going to happen, but still, crazy ...

I almost wish they'd put it as just one long movie, cause us fans would sit it out, but I understand their decision, even if I don't really agree with it. XD

LeapFrog 03-12-2008 09:58 PM

It's an interesting idea, but I think some creative truncation could do the DH story some good, like with OoTP (IMO, I know people disagree).

Cosmic 03-12-2008 09:58 PM

Im actually gald that there doing two parts...
becuz as he said, then they dont have to cut out parts!! It will have all the parts in *fingerscross*

Aslong as the 7th has Hermione & Ron in the end I dont care... :P
Well I do .. but you

MalfoyzBeloved 03-12-2008 10:09 PM

I was happy at the thought of 2 parts honestly but YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING! THAT IS SUCH A BIG TIME DIFFERENCE! People will have FORGOTTEN what happened in part I if they separate it by that much and that defeats the purpose. Just record it all at once and then do all the editting and have them come out like, within a month or two of each other, not like, 6 months difference.
So much for being all happy about two parts. GAH!

(but it's great to know this NOW though :))

Blackened 03-12-2008 10:11 PM

Meh to both decisions.

And perhaps I'll learn to live with the idea of two separate films (though the wait better not be THAT long), but David Yates?

With all due respect, I was hoping for him to step down after HBP.

unless part one is on dvd before part two is in theatres.

I'm so happy that it's a two parter! But I won't survive till May comes by :(
but it\'s still awsome! :D

Padie 03-12-2008 10:16 PM

I\'m glad about the 2 parts thing, though I think it\'ll be quite ridiculous to call the films DH part 1 and DH part 2 XD They\'d better think of something better that won\'t change the book title.

As for Yates <_< God, I dunno. I did like OotP but I dunno if his style fits in DH *sigh*

HP&GW88 03-12-2008 10:16 PM

That makes me sooooo happy. I hate when they cut stuff out of the movies and now I\'ll have three movies to look forward to :D

Ginny GL 03-12-2008 10:24 PM

As it should have been since PoA!

Yay!

aliciahutchinson 03-12-2008 10:24 PM

I dunno why everyone doesn\'t want Yates to direct, I think that he\'s done a wicked job and he deserves it after everything that he\'s put in, and obviously everyone else who is involved with the actual production of the movies and such agrees that he\'s fit to do the part, so why all the slander guys, is it REALLY that necessary????? Or better yet, who would you actually prefer to do the directing???

the_surgeon_of_tar 03-12-2008 10:26 PM

Yates had better make the 2 parts all the more worthwhile if he\'s giving such a huge gap between them. I can\'t stand a gap of 6 months!!!!!!!!!!!!

*Runs around in jeopardy*

Well, they had better make sure to include everything this time - Some of the important parts from the books were cut off last time...

Melted 4 HP 03-12-2008 10:35 PM

IM SO HAPPYYY!!! i screamed and my mom freaked out hahaha

YAY! that made my day.

squidnie 03-12-2008 10:37 PM

:woot: Yay, I was hoping they\'d do this, there is just to much of the book to put into one movie.
I cant decide if I like the space between them or not...I mean if they were close together, that means I wont have to wait to long, but if they are that far apart, Harry Potter will last longer and I wont have to deal with the pain of losing it lol :P
I will make up my mind soon enough I guess
Im really glad they are doing that. Ill stop blabbering now

Wayfarer 03-12-2008 10:39 PM

I hope they are released together.

Torchwood 03-12-2008 10:41 PM

It worked for Lord of the Rings, so why not. I would bet that they\'ll release the DVD for Part 1 a week or two before Part 2 hits the Theatres. This will spread the joy a little longer.

obsession8888 03-12-2008 10:51 PM

I\'m quite excited that their going with 2 films. That means they can fit EVERYTHING in it. Although if they like release one at the beginning of the year...and at the end. oh man. I dont know how i\'ll survive with the space in between.

Alohomora 03-12-2008 10:51 PM

I\'m a happy camper overall. ^_^ I think I\'m okay about Yates directing, but I want to see HBP before I make up my mind completely. I\'m so happy that they won\'t have to cut the book into shreads to make the movie! =D I\'m on the fence about the release dates: one part of me can\'t wait that long, but the other part is glad that they\'ll draw it out to keep Harry Potter lasting as long as they can.

DeathEater24601 03-12-2008 11:08 PM

Noooooo. :(

We\'ll have to wait all this time! 6 months! I cannot survive that long. O_O

Meh.

Fire Eyes*Tayzer* 03-12-2008 11:09 PM

Scha-weeeeet!!

I can\'t wait!! :woot:
