Post David Heyman on the GoF PG-13 rating

Entertainment Weekly has a new quote from WB and David Heyman discussing the PG-13 rating that 'Goblet of Fire' has received in the US.

"Kids. One moment they're frolicking under the Whomping Willow, and next thing you know they're like, thinking about making out 'n' stuff. Yes, the Harry Potter franchise became a man recently when the MPAA smacked the fourth flim, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (due November 18), with a very grown-up PG-13 rating."

"We anticipated at some point this was going to happen," says Dawn Taubin, President of Marketing for Warner Bros. Pictures. "It was just a question of when." Although the rating - the MPAA is concerned about "sequences of fantasy violence and frightening images" - may lop a serious portion of the audience off at this 6-year-old knees, Producer David Heyman is unfazed. "Kids loathe to be patronized," he says. "The most important thing for us is to maintain the fidelity to the material. [It's] a little frightening at times, but that's the book."

"(What's so scary, exactly? Try the murder of a Hogwarts student and the rebirth of You-Know-Who.) Parents might flinch a bit, but the PG-13 certainly didn't hurt the latest Star Wars outing, another all-ages title, or either Spider-Man film. Only, hold up: In the wake of the painfully tragic sixth book, Half-Blood Prince...goodness, does R-rated territory lie ahead? "I don't think we'll ever get there," Taubin says with a laugh. "One movie at a time."

EW have also rated GoF as their number 1 anticipated fall movie.

Haha nice article. HBP probably won't get stuck with the R rating. I don't think it will...anyway even though the movie's got that rating, parents are STILL gonna take their little 6 year olds to see the movie.

I think the '6 year old' bit is referring to the movie franchise which you could say started in 1999 when casting began for PS. It'd make sense that way because they talk about it losing an audience. Which they won't as David said.

I think that it wouldnt make that much of a differnce, ok think of it like this when the 1st movie came out, mostly kids like 10 or 11 or something went to go see it...now the 4th movie is coming out and those kids who were 10 or 11 are now like wht 14 or 15 or older...so mainly the point here is that the people who are goin to see the movie are mostly goin to be teenagers and adults, cuz they grew up with the book..as harry potter gets older, so do the readers... does that make any sense? well it does in my head lmao

I personally dont think it is going to effect who sees the movie.
I know if i was under 13 I would'nt think twice about going to see it.
And considering its Harry Potter, I don't think most parents will have an issue with it.

But then again thats just me.

But I still think it (the PG-13 rating) would hurt the box office returns.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone; and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was able to enter the Top 10 of the All-Time Box Office Movie Chart, Worldwide (where Titanic holds the top spot, and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King is 2nd) -- because of the all-ages rating.

Children have a big draw in the box office, and I'm afraid that this rating will lessen the chances of the GoF movie to make it to the Top 10 of that list.

The 6 year olds have grown up and the 10 year old and 15 and 18 and 20 etc.

Harry is for everyone.

anyways wot is it going to get in the UK I think it will be a 12a for Peter Pettigrew and stuff.

That's funny because here LotR and Titance got 12A/12 certificates -- the UK equivalent of a PG-13 and they still did well. As David said, pretty much, the text dictates the film to an extent and so it had to be an issue of when and not if HP would ever get a higher classification.

And we all know box office ratings aren't everything. All it means is that loads of people see the film. Just because loads go doesn't mean they all liked it and it definitely doesn't mean it's a good quality film.

We don't know for certain. I think psosibly a 12A but PG's have been getting away with a lot more lately so ... it's anyone's guess.

PG-13

Well, the books have grown up as they go, and so will the movies. Actually, I can say I'm extremely pleased with the rating because it shows that the books aren't so "kiddish" anymore.

Now let's hope that it will stay 95% (or more) true to the book!

I figured this one would be rated PG-13. Especially after people thought that the third one should be rated PG-13. Well the third was scarier than the second anyhow. But I mean it makes sense. The whole ending scene is a great reason to make it PG-13 as well as the tasks. I mean the Merpeople from the second task might be scary looking to a six year old. I still think they'll have a lot of people going to see it still though

PG-13? Nah, no audience will be lost with that one, unless the parents are the, "Only G Rated Flims for us" kind, which is doubtful, or if they dont want to expose their younger children (siblings of the older HP fans) so death quite yet.

Will it affect a majority of people? No. Will some people not go see it because of the rating? Yes. All in all will it ruin HP? Yeah, right. And the moon is made of cheese.

I think they'll either give it a PG or 12 rating over here.

I think PG-13 is the farthest they will go as regards to rating for the HP movies, even when they come to HBP. It would be ridiculous to do it like 16 or something(sorry not sure what foreign ratings are exactly) and it would bring a big dent in the money-intake as many children watch the HP movies.

I expected a P-13 rating considering the material in GoF. All the tasks of the Triwizard coupled with the graveyard scene. It was just a matter of time before it happened. I am sort of glad because that means the movie will be as exciting as the book. It won't be watered down. We get to feel the excitement goind into each task and at the grave yard. I can't wait. The only question now is when do I go see it....Opening day or later?

It's about time... and, well, there'd be no rightful way to make the happenings in 4 seem less than pg 13, anyway..

Not many people who've read the book could say they didn't expect this. Even the Prisoner of Azkaban's dementors caused a few questions to be asked about the final rating.
