Derek can generally be a calm guy, as long as-- MUTANTS? Oh, it was just the salamander. As I was saying, Derek can generally be a calm guy unless something happens—those bloody mutants, he knew they were up to… something...? Oh. Derek should watch where he leaves his plimpies.
He would never let anything happen to his beloved, as long as- OKAY, THOSE MUTANTS NEED TO be.. …A newt? When did he get one of those?

25. Sorting Hat
It took a while until "Meriwether, Derek" was called and a green-eyed boy left the group of eleven year-olds behind. Everything went dark when the Hat was placed on his head and it was uncomfortable knowing the entire school was watching him; but he supposed he could deal with that. The waiting now wasn’t as nerve-wracking since the Hat seemed to be enjoying talking to him and Derek felt like it actually liked him.
"Gryffindor!"
The Sorting Hat was finally heard across the Great Hall, a big smile reached his eyes as Derek heard his new home applauding his arrival.

38. Patronus
It didn't feel he would ever need that spell. Why would Dementors be anywhere near him? Didn't the Ministry have total control over them? That sounded pointless and others seemed to think the same, given the sceptical look on their faces as their Defence Against the Dark Arts explained the main use for the Patronus Charm.
His life was literally ruined now, so it was a real challenge to think of a happy thought.
"The happiest of them all…"
His grandmother giving him his first cauldron, saying he'd be a better Potioneer than she ever was. That was definitely it.

61. Kiss
Derek didn't think he had ever felt this nervous in his entire life. He chewed on his bottom lip as Mary and himself couldn't take their eyes off each other's. The Gryffindor wondered why no one had told him being fifteen was this challenging. He supposed it was something people had to figure out by themselves.
The fifth year hoped with all his strength that Mary wouldn't notice he was clearly a lot more nervous than she was. He even wondered if that would be her first kiss too.
The moment their lips touched, however, that didn't feel too important.

50. Boggart
Derek had a bad feeling about this. He knew exactly what was going to happen and frowned as he queued up and waited for his turn. The Gryffindor was so bothered by his own thoughts that he was not able to pay proper attention to his classmates and their outcomes.
Too late now, it was his turn. The third year took a step ahead, his eyes fixed on the figure as it shifted shapes. He had a very bad feeling about this…
And in a matter of seconds, there she was. His grandmother lying on the floor, blood everywhere. Dead.

15. Room
Entering his flat, Derek locked the door behind him and went straight to his second room. It wasn’t the one he slept in, definitely not. This room had every wall covered with shelves, each filled with distinctive-looking pots and also rather normal-looking ones. Each of them contained strange substances, leaves, grains, liquids or even small insects or animal parts. Cauldrons, burners and a large variety of stirrers were placed neatly in a corner.
It always took the Potioneer more than five minutes to fit a new vial of ingredient in its rightful place, and this time would be no different.

17. Cauldron
Derek hadn't been this excited in so long! A full year, to be exact. That was a lot to a seven year-old. Wow, he was seven years old now!
The boy opened his eyes as soon as his grandmother wished him happy birthday. She was always the first to greet him on his day. "Thanks, nana!" He beamed, getting out of bed at her request. She had something to show him!
Down in nana's special basement – Derek's favourite place in the world – the old woman smiled and stepped aside to let him see his present.
"Your very own cauldron, son."

"Hornbeam! Marvelous!"
Derek blinked at his grandmother, not sure what was so wonderful about it. "What… does it mean?" Did it even mean anything? It probably did, otherwise she wouldn't have said that.
Anna smiled at the 11 year-old. "It is the same wood as my wand, Derek. It is special." To say the least. "It is another proof that you are amazingly talented, dear, and it shows a connection to your love for Potions too."
The young boy's eyes sparkled at the old lady and he eventually smiled too. "Does this mean I'll be as good as you?"
"Better."

Derek stared at the letter in horror. His heart felt like it had dropped to his stomach. No, it felt like it had stopped. He was struggling to breathe properly and his face burned as if his inside had been set on fire. What kind of reply was that?? He knew his parents weren't fond of him, but that way of telling him the awful news was plain evil…
A comforting answer was all he wanted to the owl he had sent his grandmother about his break-up. A letter that was never delivered to its recipient. She was gone… forever.

'For when you are licensed.'
The sentence rang in Derek's head during his apparition exam. It was as if his grandmother was cheering him on, even though she was gone.
Finally able to know what that was about, the 17 year-old carefully unwrapped the quill and took a deep breath before touching it. In less than 10 seconds, he was where he hadn't been in years: his grandmother's basement at his parent's house, magically locked before she died. Now everything there belonged to him.
A small smile made its way to Derek's lips for the first time in two years.

Derek sat at the Gryffindor table, eyes fixed on his empty plate as he thought what to do next. He would stay at Hogwarts for Christmas break, but that meant he would be an easier target of whatever was happening to several of the students. And he would have to figure out where to go in the summer too.
The sixth-year looked at their new Headmaster and considered speaking to him, but immediately changed his mind. The man was already dealing with a lot and didn't need Derek to dump his own problems on him. He'd figure something out alone.

83. Fearful
Two year-old Derek waddled towards the kitchen where his parents were. He hadn't seen him all day and thought it was strange. The toddler found them whispering and as soon as they realised their son was in the room, both stopped and stared at him, looking extremely anxious.
The boy blinked, confused for a moment but chuckled at the upper shelves where the seasoning pots were floating and shaking by themselves.
"NO!"
It was only when his father abruptly picked him up did Derek realise something was wrong. He was put in his room and heard the door being locked.

It still felt like he had entered a black hole. An infinite sadness consumed him from the inside out and left him with no energy to fight against it. His grandmother had left him forever and he was literally all alone in this world. For as much as Derek tried, he struggled to get the words from his father's last letter out of his mind.
It took him a moment to realise the owl pecking on the window was for him. The boy dragged himself out of bed and read the note on the parcel.

He couldn't believe his eyes. Mary and Jared, kissing. The girl who had accepted to be his girlfriend a few months back and the guy who claimed to be his best friend. Kissing.
All Derek could feel was a burning sensation coming from his chest towards his head. He didn't get blinded by anger, for he was well aware of what was happening. How could both of them do that to him? Derek was sure that was not what friends did to each other.
The sixteen year-old glared at the 'couple' as they stared back. They couldn't play innocent anymore.

Before he could do anything, Mary's hand was smacking his face, making Derek first of all ridiculously confused, then stumble.
"What??? How— What??" Was all he managed to say in between the girl's yells. Inconsiderate?? Self-centred?? That conversation wasn't about him! It should be about her!
The Gryffindor stared at the Ravenclaw girl in disbelief. He had come to clarify what he had seen her do with his 'best friend' and what he got was a slap like it had been his fault!
"You're lost in your own world, Derek, and I don't want to be part of it anymore."
