Default Potions Lesson 1: The One with All the Stirring

Thank you Stefan

Art was stooped over his walking stick. It was all that was holding him up. He'd thought this would have been fun, a good idea, something to get a laugh, but he was regretting it now. The walking stick was shaking under his tremour. Even dear Madame Curie was looking at him, her little nose sniffing about in concern. He slowly, slowly pulled out his chair, walked around it, and sat down. It took him about two minutes to be able to lift up high enough to place his backside on the chair, but there it was. And hopefully he wouldn't have to move it this lesson. It would take a few hours for the potion to wear off.

The door was already open, and the ingredients were lined up under a charmed piece of cloth. Mostly so that he could be sure nobody had tampered with them, but also to keep the ingredients a secret. At least for now. He was starting to think about how he would manage to reach across the desk to lift the cloths... how would he manage that? Well, a class of students, he was sure he could ask one of them to lift it up for him.

It didn't take Jaemin very long at all to mash up the hairy fungus; the small boy set it aside as soon as it seemed well mashed and leaned to the side to look up at the board again, just to make sure of what he was meant to do with this... tortoise shell.

Didn't they make glasses out of these? Had they potentially robbed some poor schmuck of a pair of glasses so they could make a get-old potion? Jaemin picked up the piece of tortoise shell and examined it closely before tapping it lightly on the tabletop. Tortoises were like all the other turtles... their shells were supposed to be suuuuuuper hard to break, so that they were protected from big strong mean predators. Which meant that Jaemin would have to really hulk out on this bit, to get it all the way to 'powdered'. He quietly scourgified any of the hairy fungus remains off his mortar and pestle, and very carefully arranged the shell inside.

"Maximum effort," he whispered encouragingly to himself, picking up the pestle and standing up. The tiny Slytherin boy held the pestle with both hands and, brow setting into a determined frown, he started slamming it down on the shell over and over and over and over and over and over and over and OVER. ROAAAAAAAAAAAAR.

Louise looked down at her list of potential ingredients based off a poem of all things and felt a little bit ridiculous. Of course those ingredients weren't real at all and she had just been grasping at straws. She morosely gathered her supplies and just sat and stared at the instructions for a bit before she was able to concentrate enough to read them. This began her trouble.

The professor had said that she should mash the fungus in the mortar, but was it two grams before or after she mashed it? It took her another couple seconds to realize that she was being an idiot. It would be the same amount either way because it was weight based. And she was supposed to be in the House of wit. Lovely. She shook off her thoughtless mistake and got to work.

....and this ended her trouble. She mashed, ground (using all the strength in her scrawny little arms), and cut the ingredients, pushing back her overlarge robes away from her hands every now and then, until she had nice, neat, little piles in front of her. Once she was done with that she looked around to see what everyone else was doing. At this point, Louise really didn't know any spells or anything that would help her, but everyone else seemed to be whispering, muttering, or whatnot "Scourgify" over their cauldrons and- WHOA! It made it really shiny and clean!

Louise grinned to herself and poured in the red wine. Now if only she were able to figure out how to light the fire underneath. How was everyone else going about it?

Default Post 4. And we sliced and we mashed and we diced - and then we saw Haddie
Mischievous Niffler

"Oh okay! I thought you meant me." Kitty smiled at the professor before going back to her potion. Yeah, that made sense. Art must have been talking to Abby since she had the same last name.

Anyway, back to the potion. She sliced and she diced and she mashed, she sliced and she diced and she mashed. When the bat tongue was diced into agreeable little kibbles and the hairy fungus was mashed into pulp; next she turned her attention to the caterpillars. She twirled the dead caterpillars in her fingers curiously, feeling their bristly bodies. Caterpillars had never interested her as much as worms, but she was weird that way. It was true that worms never turned into butterflies, and that that made caterpillars more popular to many, but Kitty still preferred worms. Oh well. She sliced the caterpillars into pieces and set them aside.

And then...

HADDIE had transformed into a very small child. Kitty's mouth dropped open in amazement. "Oh my God, Haddie!" She stood from her chair and approached little Haddie and Katherine, an incredulous look on her face. "Is that really you? How do you feel being little? How old are you exactly? Were you really this adorable when you were a kid?" She fired off questions one after the other without barely any pauses in between.

It had to be potions.

He added as he wiggled the both tongues in front of his mouth as if they were his own TINY little tongues. Two of them. "Diced." Matt said simply as he put them on the desk in front of him aaaaaand he started to dice them both. Liv didn't mind him dicing hers, right? He didn't ask, but he assumed it. Matt was good at assuming things. Was he accidentaly going to mix both tongues up and give her MORE than just one of them? Or LESS? WAS HE??? Who knew? NOT MATT.

Dice, dice, dice, dice, dice, dice, dice, diiiciiiinnnggggg.

Did she do okay? "Yeah, of course!!!" The Gryffindor reassured her even though he had no idea what she was talking about. She was a girl and girls did things more carefully and correctly, didn't they? Or was that just in Matt's head? Anyway, he was sure she had got it right, whatever it was.

"THEN WHAT?" The boy yelled asked as he looked up at the board again. "SMASH THE HAIRY FUNGUS!!" AWESOME! Well. 'Mash' it. Technicalities, technicalities. Matt grabbed a handful of the stuff and showed it to Liv. "Look how GROSS this is!!" MAAAN. That was cool. He put it all into his mortar and started to SMASH it. Or mash it. Wotevah.

Olivia adored this boy!human. He was so funny....and kinda obnoxious, but everyone had also called her obnoxious. So, psh....Not that it ever offended her! Nope, smol blonde was simply happy and, really, everyone just needed to hurry up and get on her level already. Smiles, food, glitter, and Disney made the world go 'round. It is known!

Also.....she giggled out loud at his fuzzy mustache. "That is totally your look, Solo!" In the movie ENCHANTED, Giselle had used something similar for her dummy prince's lips. So, he was giving her Enchanted realness right now. Also, would he grow one in his later years?! If he'd not been planning to, he needed to change his tune and get on that! You know, not everyone could pull such things off. And Olivia, princess hat on, of course didn't mind that Matt wanted to prepare her bat tongue...but she didn't have anything to do now...and the blonde wanted to feel as involved in the process as she could. Wouldn't that help her to understand the steps and techniques better? LOL, couldn't you tell that she wanted to stay at Hogwarts?! HER MUM WAS MEAN, YO. She'd totally yank her out of school here to ship here away. SO, yes....Liv wanted to do her own...IN THE NAME OF SAVING HERSELF!

Taking hers from him before he got started, she started copying him again. Dicing. Right....that was with the paring knife? Looking in her potions kit, she eyed the knife with a frown. It reminded her of Bastien and his throwing them last year. He was dearly missed, you know. Haha, what did dicing actually look like? How was Matt doing it? Hmm? Liv was totally hovering over him, peeking at everything he had going on. SHARE YOUR SECRETS. TELL US EVERYTHING. It LOOKED simple enough. Her pile of "bat tongue" resembled his. So......that was right, then?

Oh, and that hair fungus?! Just.....Olivia had questions about it. What had it started off as? What had it actually grown on? All fungus came from somewhere, hadn't it?

Mashing some up, much like Matt was, she BEAMED. "This is gross." It was a statement that totally offset the pleased, joyful look on her face....But then again, Olivia was in no way normal. Mhm, thank you very much.

"We're supposed to heat our cauldrons on medium........BUT HOW DO YOU KNOW if you're heating it on medium?!?!" It was asked just as loudly as he'd asked his question. She looked down at the burner and the knobs. Were they supposed to be labeled with stuff like "low", "medium"....."hades"? Because her's didn't say anything.

Gahhhh.. Her arm felt like jelly.. DO ALLL the stirring with this potion!! She looked at her timer as the seconds seem to slow.. until finally!!

DING!

Her eight minute timer went off and she looked up at the board to see what was next!

Right.. She pulled the cauldron off the heat and then added in the caterpillar and the bat tongue.. Blech.. She shivered a little at the bat tongue once more.. because.. Eww. Before starting to stir it again in a clockwise motion.. She set the timer for five minutes as she stirred and she slowly watched as the minutes ticked by, her potion turning a creamy green color!!

A smile was on her face as she looked upwards, tears shimmering in her purple eyes as she looked towards the heavens for a moment. Her mom was here helping her.. She could feel it. Thank you Mom."

Her timer went off and she pulled her stirring stick out of the potion and took a deep breath.. Now it was time to wait for it to cool!!

Azura set to cleaning up her work stations.. She Scourgify'd all of her work utensils, her bowls and her mortar and pestle and moved to put them neatly away in the back.

She grabbed a vial and then moved back to her workstation to wait.. a smile on her face as her potion darkened as it cooled.

The slytherin was busy stirring he realized as he looked up at the board, he stopped stirring and then needed to let it sit for ten minutes. He looked at the clock and waited for ten minutes. He began to doodle in the meantime. After he looked up and realized eight minutes were up he took the cauldron off the heat and then added caterpillar and the bat tongue. Man that was interesting seeing a bat tongue. Wondered what someone went through to cut it off. Might of gotten bitten. Now he needed to stir, he cleaned off his metal rod and began to stir clockwise for five minutes. He counted and kept his eye on the clock. He saw the potion slowly turning to a creamy color. Man he was getting the hang of it. Kudos to the professor writing clear notes and Colt having a leveled head. No mess ups yet.

Ingredients were all prepared and measured, so it was time to actually start brewing. Although Brooklyn had looked up at the sound of Professor Newton saying something she thought was directed at her. Well of course the gloves had been a good thought. She wasn’t about to tell him that it hadn’t really had anything to do with the actual potion making however. Just avoiding touching all the ingredients, which hadn’t gotten any more appetizing once they’d been mashed, powdered, sliced and diced.

Glancing at her notes for a moment, she reached for her wand again. “Incendio,” she said softly, slowly raising the heat once the flame had been lit under her cauldron. Once that was set, she picked up a stirrer and cleaned it again before sliding it into the wine/prune juice mixture in her cauldron. Beginning to stir clockwise, she kept a close eye on the liquid, reaching for her measured container of fungus with her free hand even as bubbles had begun to form and the liquid was a dark, almost eggplant, color. Ceasing to stir for a split second, she added the fungus to the liquid before glancing at the clock and starting to stir again. Clockwise, as the instructions had stated. She wasn’t about to fail now. Nor was she about to risk what had happened to the younger Ravenclaw, who somehow had reversed the function of the potion.

Ten minutes was going to seem like a long time.

"YEAH!" Who DIDN'T?? The point of brewing this Potion was to get OLD!!

GO BIG OR GO HOME.

Ohhhh! OOOHHHHHHH, WHAT WAS IN THAT BOTTLE??? Matt rushed to get it and give it to the professor and he actually stood there in front of him staring at the liquid. "What's THAT, professor Newt???"

Matt LAUGHED out loud. "I'll try and get a bushy 'stache when I get old from drinking this Potion!" It was a DEAL. And GOOD FOR HER for getting his name right. See, Matt knew she was cool. And now he was slicing the caterpillar, guessing she wanted to do her own like with the bat tongue.

The boy started humming the fastest bit of the Anakin vs Obi Wan battle song as he sliiicceeeeed it at SUPER SPEED not.

LOOK at the beam on Liv's FACE when she said that the fungus was gross!! MATT APPROVED! "Amazing, init??" SMAAAASHHIIING 'mashing' it. Right, that seemed to be done. So now he had the bat tongue, caterpillar and fungus ready. "Neeeext?" But Liv asked how they'd know if the cauldorn temperature had hit medium. "You touch it." The second year reponded and deadpanned. Whiiiich didn't last too long before he burst out laughing. "I think... I think you just... well. I don't know! I just do it and hope for the best." He shrugged while he worked on his tortoise shell. "HI-YA!" Matt did a karate move on it, which obviously failed. "Ow." Oh well. He would have to work on it the way the professor had done it.

...Problem was, he hadn't paid attention. Lol, woops. "How do you DO this??" He asked while he struggled to make it into powder. "YAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!" The Gryffindor finally exclaimed as he hit the thing multiple times with his pestle in an attempt to break it into smithereens. It was kind of working.

Default Post 2: Wine, Prunes and Fungus
∞ 17 | RP entrepreneur | defies gravity | Miss George is flawless | blanket burrito lyfe

He was ready to properly start now! Thank goodness. Rooney was a little in wonder of them using wine in a potion, but supposed it was okay, given that it was also used in food sometimes. And he was definitely not all about this prune juice life.. But he added them both into his cauldron. Wine and then prune juice, one from each hand. Like a PROFESSIONAL. Which he was, honestly. He looked around at his classmates, raising an eyebrow at the debacle that was happening with a younger Ravenclaw. How was she finished so quickly?! Had he really taken THAT long in setting up and getting organised? It had been that arm workouts. They must have taken a full length of someone prepping their ingredients. Had Haddie even let her potion COOL?! Gosh.

With that little distraction over.. Rooney used his wand to produce a flame underneath his cauldron and set about his wonderful, wonderful stirring of the potion. Another of his arm workouts. Another ridiculous strengthening act that wasn’t going to stop until this potion was finished, according to his instructions. Roo kept on stirring the prune juice and red wine together and watched the colour of his potion mingle properly to a good and honest dark purple. The colour of his dream dress robes to go with his Ministry of Magic pin that he was always going to have with him. Rooney had at least seven badges on some part of clothing at any one time of day. Always his own Prefect badge. Always his mother’s badge. Always his Disney castle pin. Always his Ministry of Magic one. And then the others changed around with how he felt.

AND THE BUBBLES. Pretty bubbles in his cauldron. As soon as he saw the first few, Rooney tossed in his mashed fungus, sure to pat out ever part of the hairy ingredient into his brewing potion and started to count whilst stirring. One one thousand. Two one thousand. Three one thousand. And on and on and on. Until he got bored and started to sing a song that he knew lasted exactly three minutes and forty eight seconds. Exactly what he had left before the five minutes were up. Oooooh. A lighter purple. The perfect accent colour that his tie and socks would be with his dress robes. Perfect, perfect, perfect!

An eight minute length of stirring stood between him and the next leg of this potion making… Eight minutes was a long time when your arms were throbbing and you just wanted someone to rub your shoulders. Could that be a thing? Maybe Miss Charlotte would think about it if he let her wear his badge for a whole day. Eight minutes began on his quiet singing countdown as he added in the tortoise shell. Stir… Stir… Stir… YAWN.

Had Professor Newton dropped off yet? He looked like he had been ready to when Rooney last looked, but he didn’t have the time to look away from his potion or defer his attention from his rendition of the alphabet song.

Six minutes…

Six minutes one second…

It took soooooooo much effort to get the tortoise shell broken into small pieces. SO MUCH. Jaemin just kept smashing at it for a while longer until it was in small shards, and then set the pestle down for a minute. HUUUUUUU... he needed a break. But he didn't have time to mess about, so... he set the tortoise shell in the mortar aside, carefully perching the pestle on top, and pulled the caterpillar in close.

Another scourgify, just to make sure everything was clean, and the small boy reached for the small knife that he carried with all of his potions gear. Slicing these would be easy enough, and then he could get back to finishing the tortoise shell off.

Sliiiiiiiice. Sliiiiiiiiice. He made some neat little caterpillar slices, trying his best to make sure they weren't too thin; he almost felt bad, because the poor little caterpillar was now all chopped up, but... it was giving its little caterpillar life for science. For MAGIC science. So... it was okay, right? Right.

Maybe he would dice up the tongue too, while he was at it. He arranged his caterpillar bits into a neat little pile, scrubbed at the spot he'd cut it up on, and wiped down the knife before reaching for the tongue.

Ew. Gross. That poor bat.

Wrinkling his nose, Jaemin looked toward the front of the classroom - well, more at the back of the student in front of him, really - before pressing the knife to the tongue long-ways. That was how the professor had said to do it, right? Cut it in half, and then cut the halves in smaller bits. He might have sawed at it a little, but... for some reason, these tongues were weirdly tough. Was his tongue like this?!

...hopefully nobody ever did this to his tongue. He didn't need to know.

Humming to himself, Jaemin did his best to dice. The bits were uneven, but... it was the best he could do. He was just a small twelve year old boy, after all. Dad had done all the intricate things over the summer... he had just done his best to do the rest and follow the instructions well.

Niiiiiice little pile of tongue bits though. Jaemin made sure they were separated from everything else and pushed them away from himself, pulling the mortar & pestle back in. Just a bit more to go with this... he went to work on it again, grinding away to reduce the shell to as fine a powder as he could make.

Charlotte's eyes lit up. PLANNING THINGS NOW. SHE WAS PLANNING THINGS. THIS WAS PERFECT.

"Thank you, professor!" She said cheerfully. "I better get started!" And OOOOOH BOY WAS THIS GONNA BE GOOD.

She skipped over to an empty workstation and got herself all set up, her own potions kit out, and appropriate gear to wear for safety and whatnot, and then she checked the ingredients list and went and gathered the bits and pieces that had been hidden by the cloth earlier.

Was the red wine GOOD wine? Probably not. Probably cheap stuff. But it should be FINE stuff right? Because she was guessing that it was an ingredient because of how people said about people aging like a FINE wine? Prune juice next. Giggle. Was that so if they got TOO old they would be.... giggle... regular? Or because prunes were wrinkly? She wasn't so sure about the other ingredients and how they individually might contribute to the potion, but Charlotte gathered them all the same, and then carefully premeasured, weighed, mashed, powdered, sliced, and diced everything as required.

It was funny that it was part of the instructions because it was what she had always been taught to do. Her favourite was powdering stuff, using a mortar and pestle. The crushing was fun and how you sort of got a rhythm going and everything...

Once she was done she cleaned up all the equipment she had used to prepare things with, and then arranged all the measured ingredients in their little dishes and beakers around her workspace in the order that she would need them.

Her cauldron got a quick scourgify too and then she put it on the heat and tipped in the measured wine and prune juice and began to stir clockwise, watching for the bubbles.

dream until your • dreams come true ~ Human pygmy puff

Janelle took a peek to the side and saw that Zeke had begun to work on his potion. Knowing that she'd better get started, she checked her notes. Potions was like cooking. It was best if you had all of your ingredients ready before you started the process. She needed to measure and prepare her ingredients before she could start brewing. She had already measured her red wine and prune juice when she got them from the front of the classroom. Now she had to ready everything else.

First, Janelle gathered her Hairy fungus and measured out two grams. All the while, she was resisting the urge to gag at its nastiness. Taking a deep breath, she placed some in her nice, clean mortar. Picking up her pestle, she began to mash the fungus until she thought it looked "right". Once that job was done, Janelle poured it into a bowl and put it aside. Janelle cleaned her mortar and pestle so it would be ready for the next step.

The next step involved crushing the tortoise shell into powder. Now this was going to be a challenge. Janelle decided that she would try to crush some shell and then measure out the proper amount once it was in its powdered form. She took a piece of tortoise shell and placed it in her mortar. Then she put her pestle on top of it and began to press down on it with her pestle. Leaning into it, Janelle tried to use her weight to her advantage. This was not easy, but the shell did manage to break somewhat. How long did they have to brew this potion? At the rate she was going, Janelle would still be crushing her shell when the next Potions lesson started. After what seemed like an eternity, Janelle finally managed to get it to a powdery form. Using the mortar and pestle was always Janelle's favorite part of preparing for a potion. It allowed her to take out her stress, anger or whatever on the item that was being crushed. This time though, it made her tired and made her arms ache. She couldn't dwell on that now because she had a lot more work to do. After measuring two grams of powdered tortoise shell, she put that in another clean bowl and set it aside as well. Now what was next?

It took him a bit longer than it seemed to take others, but after a good long while Jaemin had finally reduced the tortoise shell to powder. Humming happily, the small boy measured out 2 grams before setting the rest aside. Everything was cut and smooshed and sliced and diced and measured now, so Jaemin reached for the wine and prune juice and pulled them close, along with his cauldron.

"Scourgify... he murmured, cleaning out the cauldron before carefully dumping the wine and juice into it. He hunkered down in his seat and very carefully lit the burner beneath it, watching the flame flare to life and staring at it for a long moment before straightening up and picking up a stirrer.

He had to stir it until the bubbles formed, yes? He leaned to the side again to get a good look at the board. Yes. Right. He stuck the stirring rod into the liquid and slooooooowly moved it around and around, going clockwise. WHERE ARE YOU, BUBBLES?!

Potions was never the same after Toby left. Some days were just hard for some reason. There was no one to coach him along or just to be there. It was safe to say that this was one of those days. Kyroh frowned, glancing at his cauldron. Potions was by far his favourite and best subject. But today he just didn't up to it. It wasn't like there were dragon parts in the potion either. It was weird. Frowning Kyroh silently pulled out his quill and began taking notes on the potion. Maybe he'd make it later? Hopefully he wouldn't get in trouble for it.

Good. Esme saluted Professor Newton. She didn't want anything bad to happen to him because he was wonderful. "Did you take some of the potion, Sir?" she asked as a random thought occurred to her. She had NO idea what was going on here. Maybe he had and didn't want them to know? Professors could be confusing...

As it was she was ready to start measuring out the different ingredients. That sounded simple enough though she was used to sorting things out as she went instead of all together at once. Then again she had never brewed an advanced potion before. Today was a day for firsts! Smiling, she measured out the red wine into one of her clean measuring cups. The prune juice was added to another cup. Now it was time for her to mash up some fungus. How fun.

Into her mortar it went. Picking up the pestle, Esme began to mash away. Mash. Mash. Mash. As soon as the fungus was at a uniform consistency like Rat Man had said she stopped. The tortoise shell would prove to be more difficult.

Crush. Crush. Crush. So much crushing.

Esme bit her lip as bits of shell went flying, but soon enough she had a powder. Thank Merlin because she wasn't sure how much longer she would be able to do this. Cutting up the caterpillar would be easier even though the thought was a little repulsive. She wasn't scared of insects, it was more that she didn't like using creatures in potions. She assumed that the caterpillar died of natural causes, however, because it was beyond her how anyone could kill a butterfly. Shrugging, she sliced it up while making sure not to have the cuts be too thick or too thin. Hopefully she was doing this correctly.

Now on to the bat tongue. She made a face as she cleaned her knife and then proceeded to cut it lengthwise before dicing it into smaller pieces.

SPOILER!!: Esme's Notes
AGING POTION

Ingredients
100ml Red Wine
10ml Prune Juice
2g Hairy fungus, mashed
2g Tortoise Shell, powdered
5g Caterpillar, sliced
1 Bat Tongue, diced

Instructions
Prepare all ingredients as listed in the ingredients list, weighing and measuring each carefully.
Slowly heat the red wine and prune juice and begin stirring clockwise until you can just see bubbles starting to form. (The mixture will be dark purple/brown)
Immediately add the Hairy Fungus and continue to stir clockwise for ten minutes. (The mixture will slowly fade to a lighter purple/brown)
Continuing to stir clockwise, add the tortoise shell. (The mixture will be a creamy color)
After eight minutes, remove the cauldron from the heat and add the caterpillar and bat tongue, making sure to continue to stir the solution in a clockwise motion for five minutes, until it changes to a creamy green colour.
As the potion cools, it will turn emerald green. Once it is completely cooled (about fifteen to twenty minutes), you may cease dispense the potion into appropriate vials for storage.

Characteristics: Emerald Green
Level: Advanced
Information: The effects are dosage based; the more ingested, the older one will age

How she was going to get it to powder she had no idea, but well, she'd make it work. She took a deep breath just to give herself some confidence before she started to get her and Echo some powdered tortoise shell.

She glanced up slightly once Echo finished the hairy fungus, a slight smile appearing on her face. "Fantastic, one more thing to go." With a slight chuckled she continued to get it powdered down, being just over half way done.

As she could hear Echo's voice full of disgust, she giggled slightly. "That's absolutely disgusting, oh dear. I'm glad it's just on your lab coat though." Once she was finished with the shell, she sat back, her forehead covered in sweat while she used the back of her hand to push the hair out of her face, looking over to her partner. "I am so glad you made each slice the same honestly, it would have given me anxiety otherwise." She laughingly said, taking a deep breath before sitting up again and grabbing the bat tongue.

"Only these tongues to cut up and then we're done with the ingredients, thankfully." She quickly cut up the tongues, handing Echo her bits of her bat tongue in a bowl before smiling as she put the knife down.

"Ingredients done, which means... potion time." As she glanced at her notebook she quickly read the second point. "Slowly heat the red wine and prune juice. Stir clockwise until bubbles form and the colour should be dark purple brownish at that point. After that we have to add the hairy fungus and stir for 10 minutes, still clockwise"

She looked over at Echo while organising her own things in order that they would need it and then started to carefully light her burner, placing her cauldron on it while she grabbed her stirrer, starting to stir it clockwise.

"Ten minutes is honestly terrible, and after that another eight minutes, think my arms will be aching for days after this lesson" she replied with a soft laugh. "But first we have to wait until the bubbles start to form. Then we have to add the hairy fungus, that is the step that is going to take as ten minutes of horrible stirring."

She smiled slightly before looking into her cauldron, stirring carefully as she wiped the hairs out of her face with her free hand. A relieved gasp left her lips once she saw the liquid turn to the dark purple, brown colour that it was supposed to be, at the same time, the bubbles started to form. "Yes! Success, thankfully."

As she reached over to grab the bowl of hairy fungus, she looked over at Echo before quickly adding the hairy fungus, putting the bowl down and then with her now free hand, she reached over to set her timer to ten minutes.

"And so the torture begins..." she mumbled, her face above her cauldron again to see what colour she was going to receive this time, and if it was the correct one.

good she agreed with her! yay!!! team work! Echo was so please how everything was turning out. "we can karate chop some wood beams with these muscles" she laughed while doing a small chop in the air.

right yeah back to business as she giggled. "yeah were at the bubbling stage!! " beaming over she watched the young puff put in her hairy fungus. "i wonder who goes out and finds this stuff" she spoke with her hands moving in the air with the piece of hairy fungus in her hand before tossing it in.

"on ward!!!" she laughed while they both started to stir. "we should also have a arm wrestling match after all this stirring. i feel like you could take me" playfully sizing up Jess.

First of all, the Professor Newton is 60?! What the flipping pipes?! Cornelius thought it he was around his 50s. Huh. It was a good thing it was a potion the Proff was under. It would be terribly traumatizing if the man just croaked. Cornelius wasn't ready for that. He liked his happy life, thank you very much.

Time to start up!

Buzzing from from all the sugar in his system, Cornelius dumped all of his potion instruments on to his desk. Things clanked and clattered, and managed to reach out quick (Quidditch reflexes ) and catch anything that could have rolled off the table. Busy hands and fingers got to work, organizing his tools by size: largest to smallest. Save for the cauldron. The cauldron belonged in the center in his line of vision. That done he took some time to cast a cleaning charm on his utilities, making sure they were sparkly clean and in no way would put his hair, face, or anything him in danger. One piece of lint and BOOM, it could cause a potion explosion. BOOM BOOM.

Look at that. His mum would be soooo proud of him for being so organized in potions. That RARELY happened. PROUD BALTAZAR MOMENT.

And the notes. He needed those. It was a pity that he didn't have a smart phone so he could just take a picture of it instead of having to write it all down. Setting the parchment on his lap, over the potions textbook, he jotted everything needed down. Unnecessary things OFF the table because then he would have to re-cast the cleaning charm and...better not.

Cornelius eyed the first piece of instruction. Prepare all ingredients? He eyed his table. Ugh. He needed to make room. Or...the person next to him wasn't using a space in their side of the table so...Cornelius stood his textbook up to make a barrier, giving him a wider space. There you go. You go Cornelius. WOOH.

Cauldron was cleaned, ingredients collected. Now what the professor said. He mashed up the hairy fungus on the mortar with he pestle. Uniform consistency? Head tiiiiilt. That looked like uniformed consistency. Next! The tortoise shell took more effort...much more effort that Cornelius even jotted down on a corner of his parchment to work on arms.

Carefully writing down the list of ingredients and instructions, Rula wrinkled her nose a bit at all the stirring that she'd have to do for this potion. How boring. Not that she expected making potions to be super exciting, but it was at least somewhat interesting when you spent the time doing a bunch of different things, not stirring for ten minutes straight. Meh.

But first, all the preparation stuff.

She washed her hands before pulling on her gloves and goggles. No way was she getting any of this stuff on her hands or eyes, thank you very much.

Measuring all the ingredients out was probably the easiest part of potion making, and once she had all the amounts at her workstation, she picked out the other tools she'd need and cast a quick Scourgify on them. Then it was time to mash the hairy fungus - gross - and then another Scourgify on her mortar and pestle before breaking the shell down into a powder. That took a bit more effort on her part - especially since it'd been quite awhile since she'd played Beater on a Quidditch team - but eventually it was all powder.

Next, it was time to thinly slice the caterpillars - also gross - and after Scourgify-ing the knife, dicing the bat tongue - even grosser.

But at least that was all the ingredients, so it was time to start.

The cauldron was Scourgify'd next, and then she poured the red wine and prune juice in. She set it over the burner, turned on the flame to medium, and started stirring it clockwise. Now just to wait for bubbles...

Aging Potion
Ingredients
~ 100ml Red Wine
~ 10ml Prune Juice
~ 2g Hairy fungus, mashed (w/ mortar & pestle)
~ 2g Tortoise Shell, powdered (w/ mortar & pestle)

~ 1 Bat Tongue, diced (cut length-wise, then dice)

Instructions
1. Prepare all ingredients as listed in the ingredients list, weighing and measuring each carefully.

2. Slowly heat the red wine and prune juice (medium flame), and begin stirring clockwise until you can just see bubbles starting to form. (The mixture will be dark purple/brown)

As expected, the ten minutes had seemed like a lot longer, especially since about halfway through Brooklyn’s arm had gotten sore so she had switched the stirrer to her other hand for a few minutes merely to let her hand rest. Although, as she checked the time, she realized it was time to add the next ingredient and having her hand free created a new situation. Namely, she could use it to pick up the bowl she had put her measured powdered tortoise shell in. The liquid was the required lighter eggplant-y color, so she carefully tipped the bowl to let the powder fall into the cauldron. Still continuing to stir, switching the stirrer back to her dominant hand once she had set the bowl back down on her work station.

Now for more stirring. That was the one part of potion making she often found an issue with, as it was rather boring. At least the color continued to lighten, turning the required creamy color, if maybe still slightly purple in tone. There hadn’t really been an exact definition, so she assumed that things were going the way they were supposed to. She wouldn’t have accepted if they weren’t. Either way, she had another eight minutes to wait, still stirring even as she began thinking about passages from A Game of Thrones to pass the time. As long as she didn’t get too distracted and stop stirring, she figured she was allowed to occupy her mind.

SPOILER!!: notes

Well, Katherine wasn't about to watch every single movement of Haddie (she would absolutely LOVE to, to be honest, but she had a potion to brew either). Therefore, she completely missed it when Haddie didn't swap the tortoise shell. She also didn't see that the slices had got bigger, because she was busy cutting her own caterpillar (which deserved about five points for being so BRILLIANT at it, Mr. Newton).

"You're welcome, Denaker," she said and smiled back. She knew 'Moss' wasn't her surname!Moss, but she was going to take it so.

Anyways, she had added wine and prune juice now, so it was time for stirring slowly clockwise (always clockwise) and watching out for bubbles. She realised that they were going to stir always and never stop, so she focused on the speed of her stirring for a bit. For a perfect potion, she had to keep it at the same speed. This... was fine, it didn't tire her arm much, so she started to watch out for the bubbles. The colour had also begun changing, and soon enough, it was dark purple/brown as foreseen, with bubbles forming. Her left hand was still stirring as her right grabbed the FIRST ingredient in line - which was, of course, the mashed fungus - added it carefully, and grabbed the five-minute hourglass. She would just reverse it once it was up.

Arranging all this with one hand while keeping stirring had been VERY hard, and Katherine could see why it was an advanced potion, but she managed all with success - except, of course, while doing all of this, she completely missed Haddie's mistake of stirring in the wrong direction. Because honestly, she sometimes thought that everyone was like her and that they read the instructions 738 times before carrying them out. Anyway, when she did look over, Haddie's potion was going well as well, so she felt even more confident and proud. She - no, they - nono, SHE was going to do it. She was going to brew two PERFECT advanced potion, and then she would get an invitation to The Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers.

Ahhhhh.

When the first round of her five-minute hourglass was done, she reversed it and after ten minutes were up, at last, she noted the faded colour and grabbed the second ingredient: tortoise shell. She added that and side-eyed Haddie's cauldron. She was glad to see she was still going well. She set the one-minute hourglass first like Haddie did and after about two minutes, her potion did take a creamy colour. She was going to do it!!! Although, her arm was beginning to get tired, and even though she was SURE there was a spell for stirring, she didn't know what and it was so tiring... nononono, she kept the pace. She wasn't about to give up, just when she was about to get an invitation to MESoP. It was HER fault for not looking up the spell before coming to this class. Next time, she would look it up, but for now, she had to keep up. So she mentally quit her own mentally whining and focused...

As soon as the five-minute hourglass was up, she extinguished the fire, pleased that Haddie did the same, and while STILL stirring (though she might have slowed down a little), she added the bat tongue and caterpillar. Five more minutes of boring stirring...

...did she still have an arm?..

She quickly passed the stirrer to her right hand and stirred and stirred and stirred. The first thing she would do after class was learning the stirring spell, but for now, she tried to do her best.

FINALLY the time was up! She removed the stirrer more or less at the same time as Haddie, checked the colour (creamy green, YAY!) and looked at Haddie's.

It would turn emerald soon, right?

"You're welcome," she said, smiled and once her own potion was the emerald green the professor had mentioned, she poured some into a vial for him to grade. She carefully labelled it and turned to watch Haddie. She didn't want to drink the potion right away, though, in case anything went wrong and since Haddie was willing to demonstrate since she first had to clean her working area, so she started re-cleaning all her equipment and putting them away in her bag as Haddie got ready to drink. She readied a very smug but also polite smile for the congratulations of the professor. 'Thank you, Miss Moss, for helping your troubled friend. She had improved dramatically under your supervision. I'm sure you'll be a great potioneer one -

................??????????!!!!!!!!!!????????????

NO. NONONONO THIS WAS NOT HOW IT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN! Katherine watched the CHILD!Haddie with big, frightened eyes - she wasn't frightened for Haddie, but for herSELF. She then looked at the professor with the same dread - no, - and felt her eyes burning with rage/despair/disappointment/hopelessness.

"Sir!" she rushed to the man, "I swear I was looking and her potion was going WELL and I don't even know where she made wrong IswearIwaslooking but I don't know what happened oh -" She stopped talking abruptly to look AGAIN at what was supposed to be an older Haddie with the hope that if she looked HARDER, Haddie would just GROW.

If this was a sick prank of Haddie Denaker to make Katherine look stupid, she was DEAD.

Immediately adding the 2 grams of mashed hairy fungus, Zeke continued to stir clockwise as instructed for ten minutes. One hand stirring while the other set the timer, Zeke used this time to re-read the instructions and to examine his potion.

9 minutes...

Not all that much difference.

8 minutes...

Something was different.

7... 6... 5... 4 minutes.

And the potion was visibly lighter now than it had been when he started.

3... 2... 1.

Zeke continued to stir, his free hand grabbing the 2 grams of powdered tortoise shell and adding it to his cauldron. Smiling, Zeke was pleased with himself as the potions colour changed from the light purple/brown to a more creamy colour. Checkpoint success!

Setting his timer once more - this time to 8 minutes, the sixth year lion continued to work away, only taking small peeks at Janelle as he worked. She was keeping up, yeah?

Uggghhhhhggggggggg

This was sooooo tiring, even if she was just turning her wrist lazily, it still took A LOT of effort. . . when were these 10 minutes gonna be uppppppp???

Mason had taken a seat after the first two minutes of the tedious wrist-turning stirring, since the Queen of Laziness was well. . . lazy. She was leaning on the table, one hand propped under her head and the other turning, her eyes dancing over the room as she looked for something entertaining.

Merlin, how was Haddie already done with hers?? If she recalled correctly, Haddie had been HORRIBLE at Potions last year. . . and now she's drinking it. Le siggghhhhh. Mason stared at her with slight amusement, ready to see the girl become a wrinkled old prune. But nothing happen- HOLY MOTHER OF HOUDINI!

Mason's jaw went slack. . . was that little smol person. . . Haddie? She raised her head from her hand and peered at the girl. She was so CUTEEEEEEE!!!! Professor Newton seemed just as surprised as the rest of them. How did she manage to reverse the effects??? Did she do things the other way around? Did she put in the wrong ingredients, like a pacifier or a stuffed toy? Whatever she did, it seemed to have messed with her, cause she looked realllyyy lost.

Mason looked away from the smol-Haddie, since she was pretty sure that Newton could fix her on his own. She glanced back into her cauldron, where the lorge-spoon was still stirring away, the potion turning lighter with every turn. She gave a SIGH of relief and stopped turning her ACHING wrist. She lowered her wand and placed it back on the table. She massaged her wrist softly with her other hand, working the knot out that had settled there. She could only imagine what these-unsmart-non-geniuses must have felt like with their numb arms and their sad unsmartness.

Mason shook her hands out and rotated her wrists. She made a grab for her bag, unclasped it and DUMPED the powder into the cauldron. 'Boil thou first i' the charmed pot! Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and caldron bubble. Fillet of a fenny snake, in the caldron boil and bake. . .' she whispered softly when she took up the spoon in her own hands. Shakespeare was for all occasions, anyone that said otherwise, was stupid.

Mason swatted at the powder bubbles that lay atop her potion, pushing them deeper into the cauldron with her spoon. Why weren't they dissolvinggggggg???? WHYYY??? Oh wait, nevermind. . . they just started seeping into the concoction. The potion started turning a really weird color, like a creamy-purple. . . hmmmm, maybe she should just stir it some more? With a slight frown, Mason started stirring anti-clockwise like a peasant, spoon drifting through the mixture. . . that still didn't look PERFECT!

Moving on, Janelle measured five grams of caterpillar and took out her clean knife. She carefully sliced the critter into pieces. Thin, but not too thin. That may have been the most unpleasant ask that she had to complete. The fungus was nasty, but caterpillars........awwww. Shaking the thoughts aside, Janelle went for the bat tongue. This was like cooking. Mashing, slicing, dicing, yep, just like cooking. Except...........Janelle would not be in a hurry to eat anything that they cooked up in Potions class. Anyway, she cleaned her knife in preparation for dicing and then got to work. Janelle made a lengthwise slice into her bat tongue. It was rather tough, so she had to use a bit of a sawing motion. Once the slices were cut, she turned them around and sliced them in the other direction. Happy with her nice diced pieces, Janelle peeked at her instructions again.

Now that all of her ingredients were ready, Janelle was ready to really get started. She poured her wine into her cauldron and then followed by adding the prune juice. Pointing her wand at the burner beneath the cauldron, Janelle said, "Incendio". As the flame came to life, she adjusted the flame to medium. Then she grabbed a stirrer, placed it into the liquid and began to move it in a clockwise direction. Janelle kept stirring, which was not really helping her tired arm situation. What could she do? Just suck it up and keep stirring. Finally the liquid began to heat and bubbles began to form. Fortunately the wine-juice mixture had turned purple brown as expected. Janelle kept stirring, but reached over for the hairy fungus. Thank goodness she was wearing gloves. She dropped the fungus into the cauldron and took a quick second to set her watch to time for 10 minutes. "Just keep stirring....stirring.....stirring", Janelle thought to herself. Ten minutes was a loooong time.

Hadleigh immediately added the 2g of mashed Hairy fungus into into the cauldron of dark purplish/brown bubbly stuff. Grabbing up a clean stirrer she began the stirring of the potion for ten minutes in a clockwise motion. Reaching out with her free hand to set the timer at the same time.

Ten minutes was quite some time to be stirring especially in one direction but that didn't keep her from completing the task at hand. Nor did any of the commotion that was going on around her. Yes, out of the corner of her eye she had noticed her name twin shrinking in both age and size. Adorable little one she was however the potion was meant to age not de-age, yes? Hady sighed softly to herself but sent the small Haddie child a small none-the-less.

Stirring...stirring...stirring...

Nine...eight...seven...

Still stirring.

Six...five...four...three...

Gosh this was taking to long. She glanced over at the parchment on her table for the next instructions all the while continuing to stir.

Two...one...DING!

As the timer sounded Hady glanced at the potion taking notice that it was in fact a lighter shade of the purplish/brown as noted. Good, good.

Continuing to stir in the clockwise motion she picked up the 2g of powered Tortoise Shell and added it into the cauldron. As she mixed it together the contents of her cauldron turned to a creamy color. It was rather odd but according to her notes correct.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Okay, this was more like it. A lighter purple and the clock on the wall signalling that he'd come to the end of a muscle wrenching exercise. It wasn't even that stirring was so hard, but more that a repetitive action like this one did make your muscles start to ache after awhile and before you knew it, they were going numb.

The boy was about to drop the spoon in favour of giving the arm he REALLY NEEDED a break but the instructions said he had to keep stirring, blatantly disregarding whatever aches and pains he now had.

A compromise would be necessary. It would take skill and strategy--or actually, all it really took was him switching hands but he was sure his quill could make it sound more epic than that so he would leave it to it.

With the new arm...somewhat more sloppy than his right one, Blaise managed to continue stirring while he added the tortoise shell. Brown eyes locked on the mixture as he hoped against all else that it turned a more creamy colour otherwise he might have to start over and if he was being completely honest, he didn't think he would. Stirring for ten minutes straight then continuing that stir was something he was only prepared to do once today. His arms couldn't handle it. They still hadn't grown in their muscles, y'know?

Thankfully though, it did become more creamy in colour, much to the young boy's delight.

Of course, with the next set of instructions not being so clear, Blaise allowed himself to stop stirring. What was the worst that could happen and anyway who would expect him to continue stirring for another eight minutes? Did he LOOK like a machine? No? Didn't think so. Eight minutes, watching the clock for eight minutes...resting his eyes for eight minutes...same difference really.

Don't mind him, he was still paying attention. Sort of...
