| | | Video: Tom Felton talks Draco Malfoy's vulnerability & choices in Deathly Hallows
Tom Felton spoke about Draco Malfoy's vulnerable nature, which J.K. Rowling had intended for the character, and how he portrayed the layered role in Deathly Hallows in a new interview. Tom mentioned a specific scene shot for the film where Draco did want to help Harry - in Malfoy Manor after the trio are captured by the Snatchers - and the decision he may or may not end up making, depending on the edit job for the final cut of the feature. Quote:
"From my character's point of view, a lot has been left to interpretation. Even when we did takes, we did three or four different versions, so I'm intrigued which ones they're actually going to use."
"[There is] one take where you want to help Harry. The books, I think, kind of left it up to the interpretation of the reader, really, so one way you internally want to help him, the other side where you're just confused, so I'm intrigued to see which bits David [Yates] cuts out of it."
Quote:
"Jo always talked about him as being vulnerable," Felton said. "Most bullies are. They're actually hugely insecure and have their own problems, and he has the worst parental guidance of any child I've ever seen in my life."
Quote:
"Daniel and I talk about him as two sides of the coin. Harry has these great influences, even though his parents have passed. But Draco’s just … he’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t, really. He’s kind of stuck there. "
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be out November 19, 2010 and July 15, 2011. |

It's good how he can connect with his character and understand him.Draco is actually very vulnerable and his parents didn't do much to help him.I think that only Narcissa cares a little about Draco's personality. But then again, she does everything wrong.
And it's fascinating how Tom pulls off every side of Draco.I'm quite surprised that they do every scene in different versions. It shows how much they care about the films.

the scene he is referring to....the one he says the Draco may be leaning towards helping Harry....I really hope this isnt cut....as Draco's ambivalence to continue helping Voldy is obvious in the book in Malfoy Manor...

Tom really understands Draco which is very important Draco Malfoy is a very interesting character... when i was reading the first books i thought he's just simply a mean person, but later it became clear that thing's aren't that simple. Draco is a very complicated person and it's important that Tom's able to portray the many layers of his personality. He was amazing in HBP, he's always been the right person to play Draco, but in the sixth film he really impressed me as that was when the character really showed people that he might not be just simply the evil kid after all.
I'm very much looking forward to seeing him in DH! I know he'll rock again |

Nice to see Tom really understands his character. That's very important.
He's right about Harry and Draco practically being opposites of the same coin. The only difference is Harry has great inspirations to do what's right (his friends, no parents to disapprove should he make incorrect choices) whereas Draco has that honor bestowed on him from his loyalty to Voldemort and his parents's approval and letting them be proud of him, where it could vanish any second. He can't do what he wants, because it could ruin everything he has. So Draco, as Tom said, is kinda stuck there, afraid to move forward, but afraid to go backwards too.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Annabelle Lythia Riley First Year | lovin' life Gryffindor at ♥ That was a really good interview. I agree with Tom, except I think Draco is more of a lost soul, who secretly wants to do good, but honestly can't because of who he grows up with and whatnot. |

i'd actually be interested to see (hopefully in the dvd) the other alternative takes of his performance that will not be used in the movie. Draco's story arc is actually just as interesting as Harry's and Dumbledore's. kudos to Jo for that!
although i still think Jo made a big mistake on selecting Draco's birthdate, June 5th. trust me when i say that Geminis, born on the 4th/ 5th of June specifically, are rarely indecisive or ambivalent or even bullies. we are ridiculously individualistic (to a fault) and would like to be treated the same way as we treat others-- so yeah no bullying . we also weigh things very carefully before making a decision, try to see every possible angle before we settle on a course of action. but once we made a decision, we see to its conclusion. so far this is a truth from all other people i've met that shares my birthdate of June 5th, regardless of the year we were born. so yeah if Draco was a real June 5th baby, and he decided that he will put the honor of his family above all else, he would've killed off Dumbledore without a second thought. and when he realized that he made a mistake and should "switch gears", he would've helped Harry right away, not stay stuck in ambivalence not knowing what to do. we're instinctive like that .
seems to me that Draco is more of a Fire sign-- either Aries/Leo/Sagittarius. he's a natural leader type-- always goes around with a posse, always wants to lead and/or be number one. he's also very emotional and very intense, true fire sign characteristics. its funny because Harry is a Leo too (since he's born July 30), wouldnt it be more interesting that two characters from the same astrological sign end up being quite different people? would highlight the duality and the conflict more from a storytelling standpoint. |
