| | | Steve Kloves discusses splitting Deathly Hallows film in two
Steve Kloves, screenwriter for the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows films, sent an email to the Baltimore Sun, where he talks about the seventh movie's script, and how he came about writing two parts instead of one (as well as jokingly saying that he could have written three parts).
He first mentions that the fourth movie, Goblet of Fire, was considered to be split in two: Quote:
"Years ago," he writes, "we briefly — and seriously — considered doing Goblet of Fire as two films. So this concept is not altogether new."
Steve goes into detail about the process and challenges he went through for years to eventually consider breaking the seventh book into two parts: Quote:
"As for Deathly Hallows, I intuited — almost from the first moments I began reading it and certainly once I’d finished — that to realize the story in a single film was going to be a tall order. Others in 'the group' felt similarly. So the idea of two films began to get kicked around as early as late summer of 2007. We didn’t take it lightly. But ultimately everyone felt that despite the challenges it would present, it was the most sound creative decision. I’m sure some will think we’re crazy. My wife looked at me cross-eyed when I first mentioned it. But I’m really excited about it because it should allow us to stretch a bit with the characters and give them the proper send-off. The story is highly emotional and those moments deserve time to breathe. And, personally, I feel we owe it to Jo — in order to preserve the integrity of the work — and the fans — for their loyalty all these years — to give them the best and most complete experience possible. I’d love to do it in three parts!"
Deathly Hallows will release in November 2010 and May 2011. |

I think the decision to make the film into two parts is a very good one, much better than only making one film which would be rushed and incomplete. This is the only way it's going to work, otherwise I'm afraid important things will be left out that should be included. Great decision! |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Gwenavere First Year | Reading this, I had no idea that the thought of 'Goblet of Fire' was talked about being split into two movies...that would have been wicked!!!!! The more Harry Potter to watch, the better, I'm kinda of disappointed now that it was only one movie, but what a movie it still was!!!!! And I so can't wait for the last 3!!!!! |

| It doesn't bother me that the 7th movie is being split into two. It makes much more sense that way since there's so much important information. |

Antwone Thomas Magical Creatures | The only reason people are against the split is because (A) it has such a long break and (B) they thing WB is trying to get more money out of us but I really don't mind that it's six months apart and I really do believe this is a creative decision and not a way to make more money. I do remember way back when GoF was being considered for a split and I didn't mind it at all. |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Keefer O. Marius Second Year | Keeper of Dumbledore's Watch Keeper of Neville's Clumsiness I'd love for them to do it in 7 parts! One for each Horcrux. Why not? They already made it 2, and he did say they wanted to give HP a proper sendoff... |

I can't think what they could manage to cut out of the last book so it's just as well it's been stretched across two films. I just can't wait. I want to watch it now though!!! |

after hearing what Kloves said abt splitting DH i wish so much he had split, gof and ootp..i mean esp gof..then we'd have a nice 5 hr movie...gof could use tht...when i sat thru ootp,gof..it was like 'whooooosshhhh', then all over...sigh*
DH shld be split well too...a climax 4 part 1 then cont. wif a good start 2 pt 2.
i truly hope tht Yates will do dh justice...it's such such an impt film!!i mean,it's the end of an era.or series...the books end is bad enough..but when it aLL ends with the movies...sigh...feel so sad...
good luck Kloves...sure hbp will b good. |

Fredrick Jenkins (Fred) Diagon Alley | Snogglepuff Spelunker Oh thank god, means the last book will be portrayed exactly as it should be. I know waiting around for a few months for the second half is going to be hard for us die hard HP fans but if they pull this movie off right, we'll be talking about it for years. And personally I'd like to see Chris Columbus come back and direct the last movie, he did such a great job with the first two. |
