Post Newell: "Fiennes is cold and chilling."

Sci Fi Wire has another new interview with 'Goblet of Fire' director Mike Newell in which he discusses how Ralph Fiennes portrays Lord Voldemort. He also speaks about the characters motivations.

Quote:
"You have to have the actor to do it," Newell said in an interview. "And Ralph was the actor to do it, because Ralph doesn't chew the scenery, and he isn't a sort of 19th-century melodrama figure. He's absolutely real and cold and chilling and absolutely dedicated to doing bad. And as soon as you have that, you can do it."
Quote:
"What does he want?" Newell asked. "Why does he want to come back? What sort of a person is he that he wants to come back? What sort of a person is it who wants to impose a reign of evil? Does somebody who wants to impose a reign of evil actually see that it's evil? Or is it in fact for them a kind of good? So there was a lot of that stuff, which is the sort of thing that you discuss with an actor when he's getting to really concentrate on the part. And that was all very, very profitable."
Mike Newell also mentions that he hasn't read 'Half-Blood Prince'.

Quote:
"It's another huge, wacky novel, and, simply, I've been busy," he said. "I obviously read the fifth one, because that has relevance. But, no, I didn't do that. Nor did I change my view of things for any of the stories that might be coming up. I've been very strongly encouraged by the producers and by Warner Brothers to think of this as a specific one-off film."

I don't think so. The film probably has more Harry/Hermione scenes because the book did, too - Ron wasn't talking to Harry for quite some time.

There are no such scenes. Hermione hugs him out of fear. You can't make something happen that isn't true to the book and isn't there.

Exactly, she spends a part of the story being the go-between trying to convince both to talk to each other. She's the voice of reason in a way. The idea of Hr/H is almost ridiculed as it forms part of a tabloid newspaper's headline story.

I think that Newel should read the 6th book. I also can't wait til the movie comes out so I can see Ralph Fiennes in action in the movie.

I wonder about film directors. They're very visual people, I would think, I mean if they're going to be any kind of good directors right? Or is it all the cinematographer's work? Anyways, does he really have time to read? Besides, HBP doesn't affect what came before it.

Hmm...busy, busy he says. Parading around Hollywood with the stars is...jk. It is a huge novel, but I didn't think it was wacky...you want wacky read my stuff...LOL. But...it does have relevance...if it meant more Ginny at the Yule Ball...*sighs* C'est l'amour.

But the point is HBP was released after he'd finished filming GoF.

She shouldn't be there anymore than she is in the book. But from what we've heard she and Neville tango which is more than the book even.

Cool. If Ralph Fiennes can make his Voldemort as creepy as his character, Amon Goeth, in Schindler's List, he will be fantastic. Fiennes was amazing in that movie; he was terrifying.

Can't wait for the movie to come out!

It actually sounds as though he is making the films about what 'non HP book fans' want to see. He should be filming 'the book' if you get me. I know it still has to be what people want to see but the film still has to be 'Harry Potter'.
