Post Michael Goldenberg talks Order of the Phoenix

In a profile piece on J.K. Rowling by Variety Michael Goldenberg, the screenwriter for Order of the Phoenix, discusses working with the author and creating scenes for the film that weren't in the book.

Quote:
"I was really encouraged to find the best way to make it work as a movie," he says, "and often that entailed coming up with something that wasn't in the book. I ended up writing a lot more original material than I expected to."
Quote:
"There was no real scene in the book where they (Harry & Sirius) really had a heart-to-heart talk," says the screenwriter. "In an 870-page book, Rowling could do it incrementally with a brush stroke here and a line there, and it has a cumulative effect. But we don't have that kind of canvas in film. Rowling has seen what makes a good movie; a translation process that tries to capture the spirit rather than the letter is more successful."

I'm not quite sure what Goldenberg was trying to say here. Is he saying that JK missed something? Actually, movie #5 was my least favorite of the movies. I'm not sure if Goldenberg got the book. He made up some scenes that weren't that good. If he stuck more with the book, it would have been much better. He made Cho the bad one when in fact, it was her friend Marietta. He also added a scene where all of the DAs got punished. Too bad they didn't include a scene about seeing Neville's parents at St. Mungo's. I could go on and on. Glad that he didn't come back to do the rest of the movies. Boy, glad I got that off my chess.

Well, off to NYC and I'll see Equus on Friday!!!!!

Harry ♥ Ginny || Ron ♥ Mione - - Neville's Bravery || Luna's Laughter

Interesting indeed, we all know what he's trying to say, and we must admit that he's right. But we still have to make a fuss, being the fans that we are..

Yeah, I think they left out way too much to. If they put more Quidditch I would watch the movies more often probably. I think the best Quidditch game was in Harry Potter and the Sorcer's Stone.

MeeeeYOWZUH!

even though the movie and book are completely different medians, i think a few more of the sub plots from OOTP should have been included in the movie.

Yeah. But what I liked was the transitions they worked out to smooth the parts they cut out. I know a lot of people found the Daily Prophet transition bits annoying, but I liked it better than the choppiness of GoF.

Interesting...but they could've kept more IN! And I think a few of the lines in OOTP were a little too cheesy

Not to mention Neville's role in the prophecy as well. Glad he didn't come back, but considering what's been left out of HBP, I've pulled the WELCOME mat right back out from under Kloves's feet.

He's saying she can easily write "Harry and Sirius spoke" whereas on film you have to be more detailed. You can't just have exposition all the time, you have to show the audience, not just tell them.
