Post 'Fantastic Beasts' Thursday box office: $8.75M in U.S. & Canada; $16.6M international

Thursday's box office numbers for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them are off to a promising start, where the first installment in J.K. Rowling's new era of the Wizarding world made $8.75 million from Thursday evening sales in the United States and Canada domestically, and $16.6 million worldwide on November 17th.

The $16.6 million overseas sales added with Wednesday's roundup totals to $23.5 million worldwide so far for the movie, in 47 countries. A breakdown can be found below.

• Brazil saw $1.3M on 1,311 screens
• Russia was tops with a $1.7M take on 2,602 screens
• Australia got off to a $1.6M launch on 705 screens
• Germany opened to $1M on 1,271 screens
• Eastern Europe overall grossed a collective $950K in 12 markets
• Italy‘s bow was worth $915K on 720 screens
• In the UAE brought in $429K on 97 screens
• South Korea brought in another $1.9M for a $3.5M cume to date
• France added $684K on 805 screens. The total there is now $2.4M.
Many of the big markets around the world saw Fantastic Beasts open on Friday, including Spain, Mexico and of course the United Kingdom. Other large countries to see its debut include China and Japan early next week, where the film will have red carpet premieres attended by stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, and Alison Sudol, along with director David Yates and producer David Heyman.

Fantastic Beasts, with an estimate production and advertising cost of $180 million, is expected to bring in at least $75 million domestically this weekend, and overall around $200 million around the world.
