Post Dan Fogler talks 'Fantastic Beasts' deleted scenes, Jacob's future, 'Cursed Child'

SnitchSeeker sat back (literally) with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them's Dan Fogler - who famously plays the lovable No-Maj Jacob Kowalski in the film series - about his thoughts on the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child production, deleted scenes from the first Fantastic Beasts movie, and what's to come in the sequels.

For those wondering how the conversation started with Cursed Child (which he saw during the opening gala in July), it was because Fogler noticed that this SnitchSeeker editor was wearing a Slytherin pullover from BoxLunch (available here), and it launched into a conversation about the Hogwarts House's redemption in the eight Harry Potter story.

Please note that there are spoilers for the first movie, and even the sequels going forward, so do heed with caution.

SnitchSeeker: Dan Fogler! Talk to us about the Cursed Child, you’ve seen it.
Dan Fogler:
Redemption for Slytherin.

SnitchSeeker: We know. Finally! So what did you think of it overall?
Oh man, so this is what I did. I watched a marathon to get ready. I watched the movies, and then it just so happened that the eighth movie came on the same day that I was seeing Cursed Child. So I basically walked into that show still weeping about Snape, you know what I mean? It was such a powerful experience. I think they did an amazing job.

The comedy was fantastic. You’re basically watching two plays back to back. It’s a lot of theater. That first one flies by, and it feels like one play. I love how they do all the effects on stage and everything. I love specifically when they transmogrify into each other.

SnitchSeeker: Yeah that’s crazy. And the lighting and everything.
It’s so cool. But specifically, I love how she did that.

SnitchSeeker: Who’s your favorite character?
From Cursed Child? Malfoy’s son.

SnitchSeeker: Scorpius.
Scorpius is fantastic. Cracked me up. Oh my God, he’s the hero.

SnitchSeeker: He is.
You don’t expect that.

SnitchSeeker: David Yates mentioned that there was something uniquely different about your audition that was more playful, more energetic.
Well I don’t know. I’m just so delightful, aren’t I? I don't know what it was. I mean, I had an idea. I was very close to the character. I felt like this character was my family somehow, being from New York. It just was in the blood. So I felt very close to him.

SnitchSeeker: After watching the final cut, what were your favorite scenes? And what would you have wanted added that was deleted?
Yeah, it was missing some of my favorite stuff. I still loved it. It’s incredible. One of the major bits that I missed was in the department store. All the stuff was cut for time. It’s all great stuff. And there will be some gigantic extended cover.

But the demiguise – that was a great bit where he’s invisible, he’s running through the department store and he runs at me and tramples over me. I somehow grab him and then suddenly I’m being pulled through the department store by this invisible force. That felt like Indiana Jones behind the truck for me. My inner child was very happy. I’m getting pulled and then the demiguise turns a corner and I lose my grip and I go smashing into the wall. Then Queenie runs and she thinks I’m hurt. By the time she gets to me … I’ve slammed into a clothing display. I roll over and I grab a hat and I put it on my head. I’m just sitting there just very suave like, “What’s wrong?”

That bit was very cinematic to me. She loved the bit. It was all improve and all fun. I loved that bit. That, for us, was a moment that, “Oh, these guys are starting to like each other.”

SnitchSeeker: David Yates mentioned there was a deleted scene where the girls wrote a school song.
Yeah, so Alison, obviously, is a fantastic musician. They asked her to write the Ilvermorny school song. So there was a moment when they’re down in the suitcase – in the zoo – and we’re like at a little meeting of the minds. In that little respite, they sing the song because they’re trying to argue what’s better – Hogwarts or Ilvermorny.

And that’s where the improve of, “I want to be a wizard,” came from. So we’re sitting there. They sing the song. Me and Eddie are sitting there clapping. And Dan Fogler – it was me [saying], “I want to be a wizard!” That’s the one from the trailer. It didn’t make it in the movie.

SnitchSeeker: Talk to us about Johnny Depp, working with him, the surprise casting.
I never worked with him. I’ve always been a fan of John’s work – Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. He’s one of those guys who could’ve just gotten by on his looks, but then became a great character actor. We didn’t know we were already in a movie with him.

We thought he was in the next couple. So when Alison and I saw it, we were like, “Whoa! He’s already in it!” He has had some controversy as of late, but I am one to wait until the verdict is in before making any judgments.

SnitchSeeker: He has a bigger role in the sequel, so hopefully you’ll get scenes. Tell us what you can about the sequel. We know it’s in Paris and it might be in Britain too – David Yates confirmed both of those.
Did he?

SnitchSeeker: Yes, he did. Have you read the script?
No. I don’t know nuthin’. I’ve been told some stuff by Jo, which I can’t reveal at all. Think about the time period. It’s right before the [stock market] crash, the Depression and we’re leading into World War II. And then you know that Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald … when?

SnitchSeeker: 1945.
So you know where it’s leading.

SnitchSeeker: Exactly. Who would you like to see cast as Dumbledore?
Who’s the guy that played Bilbo?

SnitchSeeker: Martin Freeman.

SnitchSeeker: We’d imagine somebody taller though.
It’s movie magic, man. They can make him tall or short or whatever. You think they’re gonna bring in Ian McKellen?

SnitchSeeker: No, definitely somebody younger.
He’s probably in his twenties right now. Who was the guy who was in Wanted?

SnitchSeeker: James McAvoy.
He’s also kind of short, that kid.

SnitchSeeker: Whatever – look at Daniel Radcliffe.
Well, there you go. Movie magic – make ‘em taller.

SnitchSeeker: We have a bit of a tease at the end that Jacob might be remembering things. What’s your interpretation of that?
Yes. It’s like he remembers it as a dream. It’s still in the back of his head. His passion, his art, is his pastries, so often the subconscious seeps out into your work. I think that’s what’s going on. I think that some of the magic that he’s in contact with rubs off on him. He’s with all the magical creatures. He gets bitten by the murtlap. No one knows what that does to a muggle. He gets kissed by Queenie. He eats the magic strudel. Newt gives him all sorts of medicines. You know what I’m saying. So who knows, with that combination of all these things made him somehow impervious to a full deletion.

SnitchSeeker: So he might be like a special No-Maj?
That’s a given!
