Post Dan Fogler talks 'Fantastic Beasts' deleted scenes, Jacob's future, 'Cursed Child'

SnitchSeeker sat back (literally) with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them's Dan Fogler - who famously plays the lovable No-Maj Jacob Kowalski in the film series - about his thoughts on the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child production, deleted scenes from the first Fantastic Beasts movie, and what's to come in the sequels.

For those wondering how the conversation started with Cursed Child (which he saw during the opening gala in July), it was because Fogler noticed that this SnitchSeeker editor was wearing a Slytherin pullover from BoxLunch (available here), and it launched into a conversation about the Hogwarts House's redemption in the eight Harry Potter story.

Please note that there are spoilers for the first movie, and even the sequels going forward, so do heed with caution.

SnitchSeeker: Dan Fogler! Talk to us about the Cursed Child, youíve seen it.
Dan Fogler:
Redemption for Slytherin.

SnitchSeeker: We know. Finally! So what did you think of it overall?
Dan:
Oh man, so this is what I did. I watched a marathon to get ready. I watched the movies, and then it just so happened that the eighth movie came on the same day that I was seeing Cursed Child. So I basically walked into that show still weeping about Snape, you know what I mean? It was such a powerful experience. I think they did an amazing job.

The comedy was fantastic. Youíre basically watching two plays back to back. Itís a lot of theater. That first one flies by, and it feels like one play. I love how they do all the effects on stage and everything. I love specifically when they transmogrify into each other.

SnitchSeeker: Yeah thatís crazy. And the lighting and everything.
Dan:
Itís so cool. But specifically, I love how she did that.

SnitchSeeker: Whoís your favorite character?
Dan:
From Cursed Child? Malfoyís son.

SnitchSeeker: Scorpius.
Dan:
Scorpius is fantastic. Cracked me up. Oh my God, heís the hero.

SnitchSeeker: He is.
Dan:
You donít expect that.

SnitchSeeker: David Yates mentioned that there was something uniquely different about your audition that was more playful, more energetic.
Dan:
Well I donít know. Iím just so delightful, arenít I? I don't know what it was. I mean, I had an idea. I was very close to the character. I felt like this character was my family somehow, being from New York. It just was in the blood. So I felt very close to him.

SnitchSeeker: After watching the final cut, what were your favorite scenes? And what would you have wanted added that was deleted?
Dan:
Yeah, it was missing some of my favorite stuff. I still loved it. Itís incredible. One of the major bits that I missed was in the department store. All the stuff was cut for time. Itís all great stuff. And there will be some gigantic extended cover.

But the demiguise Ė that was a great bit where heís invisible, heís running through the department store and he runs at me and tramples over me. I somehow grab him and then suddenly Iím being pulled through the department store by this invisible force. That felt like Indiana Jones behind the truck for me. My inner child was very happy. Iím getting pulled and then the demiguise turns a corner and I lose my grip and I go smashing into the wall. Then Queenie runs and she thinks Iím hurt. By the time she gets to me Ö Iíve slammed into a clothing display. I roll over and I grab a hat and I put it on my head. Iím just sitting there just very suave like, ďWhatís wrong?Ē

That bit was very cinematic to me. She loved the bit. It was all improve and all fun. I loved that bit. That, for us, was a moment that, ďOh, these guys are starting to like each other.Ē

SnitchSeeker: David Yates mentioned there was a deleted scene where the girls wrote a school song.
Dan:
Yeah, so Alison, obviously, is a fantastic musician. They asked her to write the Ilvermorny school song. So there was a moment when theyíre down in the suitcase Ė in the zoo Ė and weíre like at a little meeting of the minds. In that little respite, they sing the song because theyíre trying to argue whatís better Ė Hogwarts or Ilvermorny.

And thatís where the improve of, ďI want to be a wizard,Ē came from. So weíre sitting there. They sing the song. Me and Eddie are sitting there clapping. And Dan Fogler Ė it was me [saying], ďI want to be a wizard!Ē Thatís the one from the trailer. It didnít make it in the movie.

SnitchSeeker: Talk to us about Johnny Depp, working with him, the surprise casting.
Dan:
I never worked with him. Iíve always been a fan of Johnís work Ė Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Heís one of those guys who couldíve just gotten by on his looks, but then became a great character actor. We didnít know we were already in a movie with him.

We thought he was in the next couple. So when Alison and I saw it, we were like, ďWhoa! Heís already in it!Ē He has had some controversy as of late, but I am one to wait until the verdict is in before making any judgments.

SnitchSeeker: He has a bigger role in the sequel, so hopefully youíll get scenes. Tell us what you can about the sequel. We know itís in Paris and it might be in Britain too Ė David Yates confirmed both of those.
Dan:
Did he?

SnitchSeeker: Yes, he did. Have you read the script?
Dan:
No. I donít know nuthiní. Iíve been told some stuff by Jo, which I canít reveal at all. Think about the time period. Itís right before the [stock market] crash, the Depression and weíre leading into World War II. And then you know that Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald Ö when?

SnitchSeeker: 1945.
Dan:
So you know where itís leading.

SnitchSeeker: Exactly. Who would you like to see cast as Dumbledore?
Dan:
Whoís the guy that played Bilbo?

SnitchSeeker: Martin Freeman.
Dan:
Yeah.

SnitchSeeker: Weíd imagine somebody taller though.
Dan:
Itís movie magic, man. They can make him tall or short or whatever. You think theyíre gonna bring in Ian McKellen?

SnitchSeeker: No, definitely somebody younger.
Dan:
Heís probably in his twenties right now. Who was the guy who was in Wanted?

SnitchSeeker: James McAvoy.
Dan:
Heís also kind of short, that kid.

SnitchSeeker: Whatever Ė look at Daniel Radcliffe.
Dan:
Well, there you go. Movie magic Ė make Ďem taller.

SnitchSeeker: We have a bit of a tease at the end that Jacob might be remembering things. Whatís your interpretation of that?
Dan:
Yes. Itís like he remembers it as a dream. Itís still in the back of his head. His passion, his art, is his pastries, so often the subconscious seeps out into your work. I think thatís whatís going on. I think that some of the magic that heís in contact with rubs off on him. Heís with all the magical creatures. He gets bitten by the murtlap. No one knows what that does to a muggle. He gets kissed by Queenie. He eats the magic strudel. Newt gives him all sorts of medicines. You know what Iím saying. So who knows, with that combination of all these things made him somehow impervious to a full deletion.

SnitchSeeker: So he might be like a special No-Maj?
Dan:
Thatís a given!
