88. Sweet Tooth

Hagrid fumbled in his pockets. He was sure he’d put Fang’s biscuit in here before he left! Fang whined.
“Alrigh’ fang!” Hagrid muttered
“Is anything a matter?” Dumbledore’s kind voice asked. Hagrid went pink,
“Can’ find fang’s Biscuit!’”
“Oh that’s alright! Please, choose from mine!” Dumbledore said and from his wand, produced 2 tubs, “open up!” Hagrid opened one up, and funnily enough, in there, was a big pack of dog biscuits.
“Fang!” Hagrid shouted as his dog came bouncing up. He shoved some biscuits in fangs mouth and moved onto the next tub. Inside were lemon sherbets. Hagrid grinned

Hagrid sat by the Gryffindor table and grinned at the food. There was always much, and it just seemed to come out of no where. The big feast was Hagrid’s favourite time of the day, he could eat as much as he wanted without being ridiculed for it – everyone stuffed themselves at this time. He piled his plate high with all kinds of meat, sweet things and drank until he couldn’t fit anything in his stomach anymore. He grinned to himself and then at the table, which, it seemed, still carried the same amount of food as before.

The common room was almost empty, as it usually was on Christmas day. Most of the children were home by now, with their families, while others stayed at Hogwarts for countless reasons. The common room had seen many of them before, some looking sad, and then there were the slight few who seemed relieved at the solitariness. There was a rather large boy with big bushy hair who always looked this way. He would have a big smile on his face when he woke up alone. The common room would never understand, it was after all, an inanimate thing... right?

Hagrid locked the door to the Dungeon behind him and looked around. He whispered out to his spider. “Aragog?” And almost jumped back in fright as the eight legged thing jumped at him. He ended up laughing as he got off, and both sat there in silence for a while. Aragog began to walk around, seeming restless. “S’up old friend?” Hagrid said quietly, when he heard footsteps outside. He panicked and told Aragog to hide. He took out his wand and took a breath and the steps stopped. Hagrid and the other person stood silently, neither wanting to move.

Hagrid ruffled around his little hut in search of his other sock. One hung loosely on his left foot, looking saggy, slightly pained with all Hagrid's jumping. "'onna be late, Fang." He mumbled. Then he stopped and felt in his pocket. A huge smile came across his face. "Of course!" He shouted. His boom of a laugh filed away into a quieter one, as he put his other dark and old sock on. Now he had two socks on, the wrong colours, granted, but Hagrid couldn't have looked more pleased with himself than if he'd just hatched a dragon egg.

"Ha ha ha how peculiar." Dumbledore laughed, more to himself than anyone in his audience. Hagrid boomed a laugh with him, although he wasn't quite sure why. They both sat in Hagrid's little hut, drinking tea out of chipped china, only the best Hagrid would bring out for his favourite headmaster. "I 'ope." Hagrid started, "You know how thankful I am. For 'erything. For absolutely 'erything." Dumbledore's eyes met his and they shared a moment of understanding and thanks. A tear came to Hagrid's eyes so he looked away to fill his tea cup up again with his herbal refreshment.

The huts garden was teeming with ants. Hagrid couldn't look anywhere around the garden without seeing a hoard of ants coming his way, and it wasn't that Hagrid disliked ants or anything, he just found them a bit of a nuisance. He wasn't for killing them, obviously, but he needed to find a way to get rid of them safely. It was only when rain began to teem down did the ants go into their hiding, so Hagrid got an idea. He turned his little garden into a miniature little lake, hoping not too many ants drowned in the process.

It was late at night and Hagrid's face was red. He didn't even know what had made him so angry, he just felt snappish. He felt as if at any moment he would explode. He made himself a cup of hot tea and sat back down again. Fang whined, and that did it. "Oi Fang!" Hagrid boomed, his voice filling the entire hut as well as most of the forbidden forest, "Na' jus' you wait Fag, imma.." He stopped mid sentence as Fang cowered. All the anger drained from Hagrid and he smiled, stroking Fang's head. "'Av a biscuit Fang."

Hagrid stared at his wand. He hated it. Why will it never do what I want? I'm just not like those other kids. He waved his wand again. "Expecto..." He trailed off, wincing slightly. "Expecto Patronum." He whispered with his eyed tight shut. He looked around the room, he was alone. "EXPECTO PATRONUM!!" He bellowed with a force not even he knew he had. He though of his father as he did so, and shock. Out of the end of his wand came a silvery-white creature, scattering across the floor. Hagrid smiled, of course his patronus would be a spider.

"Now Hagrid, this book has helped me along the years. Not greatly, I much prefer to make up my own words, makes for more fun I imagine but none the less, I leave this for you. Use it well. Course, I don't mean any disrespect, I only want to help you. You do understand?" Dumbledore stared into those huge black eyed without a hint of mockery, "I just think it'll come in use, especially now I've hired you groundskeeper?" Hagrid smiled and took the book of him. It was a dictionary. "It even tells you how to pronounce words! Exciting..."

"Oi Hagrid!" A group of boys called out to him. Hagrid tried to ignore them and looked down at his book. Ignore them. "Rubeus!" They called again. Hagrid then looked around.
"Mmmm?"
"Tell us a Joke."
"I don't know any jokes."
"Course ya do." they mocked, sniggering. "Go on, or we'll start throwing." They dared, glancing to the rocks beneath them.
"Um.." Hagrid stumbled, he'd heard of a simple one once, he wasn't sure if it was a joke but he'd choose embarrassment over rocks . "How did the chicken cross the road?" There was a pause before the rocks started.

Hagird stared at his plate of food and signed quietly to himself. He didn't have any parents, friends or anything of any worth. He looked towards other groups of children who had friends while he sat on his own, being all large and awkward. A misfit. He didn't think time would make anything get better, he'd just have to live with it. He thought to the future, of perhaps a better time, but it all seemed too bleak. He though of his father who wasn't with him anymore and wished that he was. He didn't know where he'd end up.

Hagrid sighed. He'd done it again. He looked in his drawer for another pair of pajamas but he'd just ripped his last. They were nice ones this time, he thought to himself, nice and green. Striped in different shades. He'd thought he'd bought the right size this time, a good size that woudn't break when he bent over or stretched upwards, but no. Again, they'd broken. "Ohh Fang." He sighed again, trying to pull the two broken pieces together, "Will I ever fin' a pair o' Pajams that'll fit me?" He looked towards his feet and made a sigh again.

Hagrid tried to ignore them - he wasn't going to give in. Giving in would give them satisfaction and they weren't getting any satisfaction from him. "OI!" They shouted again. Hagrid started walking faster. "Ahhh Rubeus, you're such a wead, can't do nothing right can yer?" Hagrid stopped. "You and all yer family, your mother hated you! Knew you'd be a wead!" Hagrid turned back and walked slowly towards them.

Hagrid didn't want to apologise but the proffesor was staring at him. "Sorry." He said as the boy looked down himself with his black eye and broken arm.

Hagrid didn't want to do it, but he wasn't one to back out on something he'd said he'd do. It was like a promise. So he stood at the edge of the lake shivering. A group of people stood by to watch. "Come on Rubeus! We dared ya, remember? Gotta do it!" Hagrid ignored them and though of the money they'd said they give him for doing it. It might have been a dare but at least he was getting something out of it. "One, two...." They all shouted together. "Three!" And a huge splash coated most of the gawking crowd.

Hagrid didn't want to take part in this lesson at all. DADA was his worst subject anyway, and now having a dark closet staring back at him, shaking, made it even worse. "Go on Rubeus." The DADA professor urged. "You know how to, now do it." Hagird stepped forward. He heard people snigger behind him. The door opened. Hagrid had his eyes closed and he screamed "RIDDIKULUS!" and ran to the back of the room. The Boggart was already back in the closet when Hagrid opened his eyes, to see the rest of the class staring at him in horror.
