Sorting Ceremony

If you are a first year or a transfer student, the time has now come for you to discover in which of the Hogwarts Houses you belong. After waiting in the Entrance Hall for what seems like forever, you are invited inside to stand beside the dais at the front of the dining room. Hundreds of eyes follow you as you make your way forward. Up above, the ceiling reflects the night sky as candles float above your head. An old, mangy hat awaits on a stool.

Once all is silent, the hat bellows out its annual song, telling all there is to know about the four Houses in a brief amount of time. The Sorting Ceremony then begins with the hat being picked up and a name being called. One by one, names are said in alphabetical order by surname. One by one, your peers are claimed as a Gryffindor, a Hufflepuff, a Ravenclaw, or a Slytherin. Where will the Sorting Hat place you? That is the question everyone in the room is asking as you now sit upon the stool and the hat is placed on the top of your head.

OOC: You may role-play for the Sorting Hat, but please do not get carried away with your portrayal.

If you are role-playing sortings for more than one character, you may include all characters in the same post, or post them separately. This thread only will make an exception for posting multiple times in a row.

Her fingers were still a bit damp from having reached out of the boat to trail them in the lake during the boat ride, but Aurora was more distracted by the sights as they had all been led into the Great Hall for the sorting. She knew what to expect, of course, but actually seeing it all was different from hearing mum and dad’s stories, or the few that her older siblings told her. Once she’d made certain Damian was there with her and not off doing whatever it was piqued his interest, she’d occupied her time counting the floating candles as they made their way to where the hat was waiting.

Because obviously the hat was waiting. It wasn’t as if it was just any old hat, just like she suspected the wandmaker’s measuring tape wasn’t just any old measuring tape. There was the tiniest thought that the hat was specifically waiting for her, or her and her brother, but it quickly drifted away in favor of more counting. Granted, she figured there wouldn’t be too much waiting once they started calling people up, but still, distractions were nice.

As expected, there wasn’t too much time to wait before she heard her name being called.

“Barrington, Aurora!”

Squeezing her brother’s hand once, the small auburn-haired girl bounced her way over to the stool and perched on it, going back to thinking of numbers as the hat was placed onto her head and then blocking her view of the candles and most everything else temporarily. And then the voice started.

“Hmm, another Barrington…”

She thought about asking it what that meant, but it was obvious after her uncle, and then mum and dad, although mum wasn’t a Barrington then, and then the triplets and her cousins. There had been kind of a lot of them, so she just let the hat go on ruminating. It was rude to interrupt, after all, and the hat wasn’t exactly saying anything that she found offensive. Therefore, she switched to singing a song from Frozen while she waited. Was it always this difficult?

“…better be… RAVENCLAW!”

She blinked, both from surprise that it was over and also her eyesight being returned to the brightness of the hall as the hat was removed, but after another moment, she jumped down from the stool and began heading to the blue table, walking backwards as she heard her brother’s name get called because obviously she wanted to know where he’d end up too.

Mira shiverd in her cold, and wet robes while she awaited her turn under the sorting hat. It had been an awful boat ride where her twinbrother Levi had badgered the groundskeeper about the giant squid the whole way and had totally ignored her. Mira had tried not look down into the creepy dark water, while also getting weird looks from some of the other first years. When they had gotten to shore Levi had gotten super cross with her for some reason unknown, and had tossed her pet pygmypuff into the lake so Mira had had to dive into the lake after it. She didn't even know if her pygmypuff even lived now where it was quiet and unmoving in her left robe pocket while she stood near the staff dais to be sorted.

"Mirabelle Draguar!"

Hearing her name, Mira shot a look towards her brother before going up to sit down on the stool. Within seconds the mangy old sorting hat fell down over her ears and eyes and everything went black.

'Ah, another Draguar....It was some time ago now that I sorted your mother and father into their houses. I see that you are a girl with a big curious heart, a thirst for knowledge, learning, and creativity and also with a friendly sociable free spirit. Most of all i also see someone that many students will want to get know. So chin up little Draguar your new house will be....'

RAVENCLAW!"

Taking off the sorting hat to cheers from what she believed to be her new table Mia bolted towards them. Levi could get sorted without her.

Whyyyy was her last name a W? Who in their right mind had chosen that? Did alphabetical order not exist back in the day? Did they not know what they’d be subjecting their progeny to??

As it were, Cat had a lot of time to not only curse her ancestors, but take in the full sights and sounds of the great hall as she waited for her name to be called. Just as she’d done with the train and boat rides, she stood quietly. She didn’t bother with starting conversations with those around her. She was looking at every detail she could. From the floating candles, the night sky through (through? On??) the ceiling, to the other people in the giant room, she was committing it all to memory.

Nevermind that she wouldn’t retain it all. That didn’t matter, did it?

So engrossed was she in the noticing of everything, Cat startled when she heard her name.

“Webb, Cathryn!”

She made a face at her full (backward, minus the middle name) government name, and stepped forward, tripping mildly on her own foot in her haste. She lifted herself onto the stool and closed her eyes before the old hat was placed on her head.

It spoke to her. It did. But her ears were buzzing so loudly that she couldn’t for the life of her process what it was saying. There was a shiny glass on the table in front of her, though. That she knew.

“RAVENCLAW.”

Oh. Dad had told her about that one. Cat smiled as she hopped off the stool. That’s the one she wanted. With the eagle. She didn’t even trip this time as she hurried off to the blue table.
