Apparition Lesson (5th-7th years) It was a sunny and bright Monday afternoon in the beginning of March, with the sun giving off a hint of some spring warmth in the air. As the students head down to lake bank where the Apparition lesson is being held they will surely take notice of the blond unfamiliar woman in dark ministry robes with a friendly smile on her face standing near an assortment of tree stumps that are charmed to be comfortable to sit on. A little further to the right in the direction of the forest trees several large colourful rings have been laid out on the ground for some sort of practice. Behind the ministry woman out on the lake water you can see large green lily pad leaves scattered almost like in an obstacle course fashion, but what could they be for? Take a seat on a tree stump and you’ll soon find out. |
Needless to say that Aria was excited about Apparation lesson. She and Caes had talked many times about how they would get to take practice and the exams together since he had unfortunately failed before. Big brother needn’t worry though! This time she was going to be there by his side throughout to ensure that he was successful. The sixth year skipped happily along down to the Lake where she soon came across the instructor and the rings. “Good afternoon, good afternoon!’' bubbly Aria called out to the lady as she selected a tree stump to flop down on. Apparition of being an Animagus. That had always been Jude’s mindset. Being able to apparate would be so helpful to him when it came to University and needing to travel for all the things he had his Hufflepuff mind set on in the future. Hands shoved in the pockets of his trousers, the boy made his way to the Lake behind the ever so peppy Aria McLeod. “Hi! Good afternoon!” Jude gave the woman a cheery wave with one hand while he used the other to brush his dark hair - which he had failed to cut yet again - from his face. Okay! So… where to sit? In the end, he selected a stump somewhere in the middle. |
Caes was here naturally. It was disappointing knowing how close he was to passing his Apparition test over the summer, only missing some teeth. But with lessons now going, he was feeling a bit confident on being able to pass it. Only problem though, being at school made practicing a little challenging but it wouldn't be as much of an accomplishment without the challenge. "Good day," Caes said entering in. He briefly wondered the possibility on her passing before him. But it wouldn't be a bad or surprising thing if she did. Others on the other hand? Well, this will be quite a show. Taking a stump nearby his sister to sit on. |
Apparation was on Ig's 'to do this summer' list (along with figuring out what he was supposed to do for the rest of his life, and all that jazz), but with the lessons taking place during term time he was more than happy to bring that part of the list forward (and then he could focus on the hopelessness of post-graduation nothingness full time!). Of course, he could have tried to take his test the summer past, but there had been so much going on that, no matter how much he practiced, he didn't particularly feel confident in going for the test. So more lessons it was! It was also the perfect opportunity to ignore the mountain of revision he had to do for his upcoming NEWTs, which was growing even as the exams drew closer. It wasn't that he didn't want to study, of cou-- no, that was exactly what it was. It was like if he could postpone studying, he could postpone the exams, and then graduating, and then figuring everything out. He knew it didn't work like that, but the eighteen year old was a master procrastinator. Grinning at the others already assembled, and the Ministry person whom he assumed would be leading this session, Ignacio found a seat. |
It was a rite of passage as one got older in the wizarding world…learning how to apparate. And Rajesh was definitely here for it. To earn that level of freedom to move on ones own to other places instead of relying on his parents or other adults. It certainly would make going to university easier if that lay in his cards after graduation. Granted there was a level of nervousness that went along with given there were dangers, especially if you got things wrong, but the curiosity was doing its best to outweigh it. “Good afternoon,” he greeted the woman who was likely to be their teacher for this lesson. She seemed friendly enough to not make things too hard for them. The sixth year moving to take a free seat on one of the tree stumps. |
No one could believe Edric was {nearly} old enough to legally apparate, least of all Edric himself. But he was here to learn and to probably splinch himself into a cool story for later. "'Lo," he smiled and nodded to the Ministry lady, picking out a stump to sit on. He crossed his long legs at the knee and focused his usual dreamy gaze on the lake. Hmm. It had lovely lily pads this time of year. Apparently. |
Seeing as Jasper was one of the youngest in his year, he was still far from being of age. So it was totally awesome that he was still allowed to join in on the apparition lesson. He wouldn't miss it for the world, are you kidding?!?! ... But flying was still the superior form of transport. Just sayin'. Still, he was nothing but bright and sunny as he made his way towards the lake. As he drew closer to the crowd already gathered, he greeted everyone with a boyish grin and a casual nod before stopping by who he assumed to be their instructor for the day. "Good afternoon. I'm Jasper Botros. Looking forward to the lesson!" Botros men had manners, you see. Oi, EDDDDDDD! All manners gone, Jasper made an obnoxious beeline towards his friend, plopping himself on an adjacent stump. "Yoooo, what's up, dude?" ... Except as soon as he sat down, he shot up into the air. Like up, UP. Flying like a bottle rocket. Heh. It happened from time to time. Jasper had gotten used to it, so he was unfazed as he stayed floating in the air. |
Lisa was determined to learn Apparition. It would prove an invaluable skill to the Ravenclaw. If she tried her hardest now, maybe the whole apparition thing would become easier and easier? “Afternoon! I’m Lisa Nam. Fifth year but ready to learn,” she proclaimed before waving to Jude and joining Jasper and Edric. “Hiya Jas and Edric,” she greeted. Please mind the bubbles… they were a reminder of things. |
Ash Needed Help with apparition. She badly needed to be able to do this(as she would probably never be able to drive), but she couldn't get her license. She had a problem with splinching, and recently she'd splinched so often that it wasn't worth trying the test again for a while. That was why she was here. She looked around at the people already gathered, and quietly decided to take a seat all by herself. No offense to her friends, of course. It was just that Ash hadn't been in a good mood to begin with, and being bad at an important skill in front of everyone didn't improve it at all. |
It really was on brand that the one thing that he had been looking forward to was now something he dreaded because of...because of certain circumstances that had pushed Atlas even more on the edges and isolated this term. Feeling even less certain about who actually sought out his presence and did not just drag him around as a convenience was almost the least of his worries considering the absolute mess he had left the dorm in this morning. You would think that being able to move objects with your mind would be an awesome ability and you would think wrong. Or maybe it was just him. Probably just him. It's him, hi, he's the problem it's him. But...anyway. Whatever. It was...fine. Sure. Hands shoved deep into his pockets and trying not to let his gaze linger on any one to thing for too long for REASONS (but doing that also meant his gaze absolutely lingered and those colorful rings were just too...prominent. Great. Pulling himself up a seat near Rajesh with a subtle nod in greeting (much as he wanted to just be seated alone...he did not want to feel even more like a spare), the Gryffindor glanced up at the woman (one of his dad's co-workers which was...about as much as he knew about her) and fidgeted with the metal matchsticks in his pockets. |
There was a part of Cailyn that was glad she’d decided to postpone her Apparition test last summer, but then there was that other part of her that regretted it. Since now it meant she had to add Apparition to the growing list of things she was worried about. Mostly NEWTs, and her talk with Professor Holden had eased her mind the tiniest bit as to how she should expect to fare with the exams, but it was still stressful. Adding to that was the fluctuations that had occurred when it came to the glow from her hands, courtesy of the resident Hogwarts poltergeist. Which, coincidentally, had also started in that same conversation about exams she’d had with her head of house. For a while, it had been nearly bearable, but then it had resumed being particularly annoying. Especially when she was trying to fall asleep. The gloves were back on as she’d approached the setup near the lake, both metaphorically and literally as the articles of clothing were the only way she’d retained her sanity during the period of time she’d been dealing with the special ability. Focusing was important when it came to Apparition, after all, and she knew she wouldn’t be able to focus if she was thinking about accidentally blinding someone with the palms of her hands. “Good afternoon, ma’am”, she greeted the Ministry woman, before taking up a position on a stump near Ig. |
SPOILER!!: Hellos Stealing a glance down at her watch Aurora deemed that it was a high time to start. Straightening up and smiling all around at the students she began by introducing herself. "Good afternoon everyone! I'm so happy to see that so many of you want to learn how to apparate. I'm Aurora Bagnold, and I'm the department head of the Magical Transporation department at the ministry of magic, and I will be your apparition instructor today." After a little pause to let her name sink in she started off with some Q&A. "Can anyone tell me what exactly is apparition? And what other forms of transportation are there?" OOC: Feel free to be creative with your answers you can say both magical and muggle forms of transportation. Class will continue sometime on saturday. |
Apollo was here... it was somewhat of a rite of passage, so of course he was here. And it was nearly perfect timing for him, since in just over a month he'd be of-age. While broom flying would always be the superior form of magical transportation, that wasn't to say he couldn't see the merits in apparition. Taking the tree stump near Aria, he followed the ministry woman's gaze to the lake water where there were lily pads? Interesting. "Ready for this?" He asked Aria. But before she could answer, the woman was beginning. "Flying on brooms." He said matter-of-factly. The only mode that mattered most, in his opinion. Having been notified of this special lesson ahead of time, Leanne shuffled around her schedule this afternoon so she could be in attendance. While she wasn't here as teacher - she had her healing hat on today - she also hoped she wouldn't need to use it. Yet was keenly aware of the high likelihood of splinching among youngsters/ first-timers (and even those who had been apparating for years). Was she supposed to introduce Aurora, as she herself was a familiar face to these students? Deciding against it, she stood near the back, and waited, which didn't appear to take too long. |
"Five galleons that I'll apparate before you," Caes whispered to Aria cheekily. Yes, he had an unfair advantage, but maybe that would help his little sister out even more on this. One of her friends (Apollo) had sat near them before they were asked a question. "Apparition lets you pop out of one area and appear in another area," It was about as simple as Caes could describe it. He would've said flying as another option of transportation but he was beaten to it. No hard feelings as he had a small smile from the thought. |
Noticing the presence of Atlas joining him nearby, he was intrigued to say the least. It wasn’t like they were well acquainted outside of lessons being yearmates, other than the other boy being his Secret Santa. Maybe he was looking for a change of scenery. As long as he didn’t mind the occasional chance of rainstorms. Rajesh returned the nod of quiet greeting, cut off from offering anymore as the woman up front deciding to start the lesson. Transportation Department Head…they sure brought out the big shot for this activity, not just some random department worker. “Apparition is the quick movement of a witch or wizard from one point to another requiring much focus, especially when across long distances.” At least that was what Rajesh could come up with with what he knew of it and experienced sidelong. “Floo power would be another form of transportation.” One that wasn’t exactly clean or unlimited since you had to be connected to the network. |
Ash toyed with her bracelets and her sleeves as she spoke, her mind drifting to an entirely different location(which was concerning, seeing as apparition required great focus). "Apparition is very a very convenient mode of transportation, assuming you're focused enough not to splinch and going to a place you know well. You also have to make sure you're not going somewhere with anti-apparition enchantments... What happens if you try?" She paused for a short while, then threw out an answer to the other question. "You could drive a car, like people without magic do. I can't drive or apparate very well." And Ash was back to silence. |
@ Shan @ Ariana @ Eva "Hey Lisa, Edric cooly nodded to his fellow fifth-year, trying his best to seem cool but secretly SUPER FLATTERED that a) a girl greeted him and b) knew his name?!? He was all smiles as he turned to brag about this to Jasper, when... well, he noticed his friend seemed higher than usual. "YoooooOOOOOOH, DUDE, CALM DOWN," Ed whisper-shouted, hopping up to try to reach his buddy's trouser leg. Maybe he could tug him down from his levitation problem. Bro liked to fly, but now was not! the! time!!! Problem was, Edric, too, had been gifted, and his fingers were suddenly little flaming torches as bright as the sun. One finger or two may or may not have been shooting a beam of light directly into Jasper's eyes as he frantically tried to pull his friend down to earth. His other hand, of course, sent a spotlight into the heavens as he raised a hand for the instructor. "Little help here, please, miss. Yes. He needs help. My friend might actually need a sticking charm applied to his bum. His favourite form of transportation is flying by broomstick." Or just levitating randomly. Duh. |
Aria sat there with her happy smile on her face because she had caught sight of Caes. She hoped he wasn’t feeling TOO dreadful about past apparition experiences. Annnnnd THERE went her sympathy for her brother when he made THAT comment. Aria huffed. “That’s cheating, Caeson Dominic Hawkins! You’ve already had Apparation experience! But you’re on! Better hope with all your might you don’t get splinched this time.” The younger Slytherin was grinning because even if Caes wasn’t hoping hard enough for himself to pass the test this time, Aria had him covered. She waved at Apollo, sort of surprised that he was this interested in Apparation - she half expected him to fly everywhere on a broomstick. “Hiii, Apollo!! Yes, I am!’’ There wasn’t more she could say - or ask - because the woman was getting started. Since the question about what Apparation is was already answered, the girl stuck her hand up to supply her response. “There are airplanes which let you travel via the air.” Jude grinned back at Ignacio and returned Lisa’s wave. He shot Ash a concerned look when he noticed she went off on her own. She’d be okay, yeah? As selfish as it sounded, Jude decided that he couldn’t be too concerned with others right now because he needed to soak up all the Apparation knowledge he possibly could. Like… he REALLY needed and wanted to get his license as soon as he possibly could. “Uh… there are flying carpets,’’ the Hufflepuff said, hand in the air. Flying carpets stuck out to him because of Uncle Evan, his mother's brother. |
Ironically, Edric, Jasper was very calm. Too calm, perhaps. Unlike his shaggy-haired blonde friend. Poor Ed was totally losing his cool. Jas would never. In fact, he was nothing but casual and sunny as he greeted his other friend from up in the sky. "Hey, Leeees!" He didn't say anything about the bubbles. He knew how she felt about them. Anyway. Back to the in-air situation. It was a real good thing that he had chosen to wear a belt today with all of Ed's tugging. Though his hands still flew down to his belt loops for extra reinforcement, tugging them up, up, up so that Edric wouldn't pants him in the middle of the lesson. ... Except apparently potentially mooning his classmates would be the least of his problems. Because?? He could no longer see. "Dude! Cool it with the light!" His solution was to blink several million times to get the weird residual light spots out of his eyes, which he knew must've looked ridiculous, only worsened by the total scene that Edric was now causing by calling out to the instructor. "Flying's fantastic." He quickly agreed before pivoting to calm everyone down. "I'm totally fine, by the way, it usuALLY--" But what it usually did, Jasper did not say. Because as soon as he began to speak, he spontaneously began zooming forward very, very quickly. .... Was Edric still holding on ... Because uhh. |
SPOILER!!: Individ replies SPOILER!!: Edric, Jasper & Leanne Oh for the love of brooms, why is that boy levitating in the air and the other boys hands were glowing. Pulling her wand out Aurora called over to the only other adult in attendance as she gestured to the Ed & Jasper. "Healer Mancini can i can get some assistance over here? These two boy's look like they need to be taken to the hospital wing for treatment of their 'powers'." Repocketing her wand again she called out "Edric, hold on to Jasper!". Aurora then sprinted over to latch on to the robes of the boy that was closest to the ground (Edric), and started to pull him down towards her as she called up "Try and slow yourself down Jasper and land on the ground safely, can you do that?" So that they could get back to a normal lesson. ******* Retaking her position at the front of the stump group several minutes later she smiled at the assembled students. "Good answers everyone! You've listed most of the common magical and muggle modes of transportation like carpets, brooms, flooing, airplanes and cars. There are also portkeys and buses to not forget to add to the list." Here Aurora paused in case any of the students wanted to take notes before she continued to lecture "Apparition is when you harness your magical powers to transport yourself instantly to another destination. You can also side-along apparate which is when you transport yourself and another person(s) to another destination." "Now then who can tell me what the three D's of Apparition are? And also what is splinching?" Aurora queried. OOC: I like the creative answers, keep them coming!:) Just two more Q's and then we'll move to the mini practice portion. Lesson will continue on monday or tuesday at the latest. |
A fan club?? NOOO! Aria had no such thing! The only sort of fanclub she ever wanted was the type that would adore her as a clothing designer. Mhmm. The Sixth year nodded to the instructor with regard to the comment about airplanes. It was rather sad that one had to spend money traveling from one country to the next; it was just too bad every human couldn’t Apparate. This was why Aria was going to take every advantage of getting her license. There was a wince from her at the spectacular show two of her classmates were putting on. Despite knowing it wasn’t intentional, she couldn’t help but be annoyed. Like… HELLO!!! There were important things to focus on here. Could Mancini take them away, please? At the next set of questions, the Slytherin’s hand shot into the air. “Spinching is where a body part is unintentionally left behind as one attempts to Apparate. A part like a tooth from the back of your mouth.” Aria threw a knowing look at Caes. Jude was concerned about his housemate and Edric. Darn these powers that they all had! He watched with his mouth hanging slightly open at all the happenings. It was quite lucky that Ms. Bagnold was proactive - Jude suspected that she needed to be as a Department Head - in handling the situation. The boy hadn’t even noticed that Mancini was hanging around until at that minute when she was called upon. Um… okay then. Edric and Jasper would be alright. Hopefully. Jude volunteered his answer, though his eyes weren’t fixed currently on the instructor. “The three Ds’ of Apparition are: Destination, Determination and Deliberation.” Er, did she want them to elaborate on what each word specifically referred to or would she? Or would another student do so? Either way, Jude decided to leave his answer there. |
Caes watched as one of the guys was about to fly away and held down by others. He couldn't comment much before he felt the urge to... quickly tucking his head under his arm to sneeze. Leaving a small litter of flowers to escape his nose onto the floor below. Sighing before turning back to the next question. It was the exact reaction Caes was expecting on his rare cheeky grin. It was no surprise that Aria would essentially use his experience as an example in playful retaliation. No need to add onto the three D's since he committed that to memory. "Splinching occurs during an unsuccessful Apparition. The amount splinched ranges but is usually easily repairable.... it's not exactly a pleasant experience." Caes added. Though he was lucky he didn't lose clothes or whole limbs unlike some other testers he previously tested with. |
Ash had the random urge to pull out a marker, doodling a little flower on the back of her hand(matching the deep blue flowers blossoming in a little ring around her). She was listening. Kind of. "The three D's basically mean that you have to be completely focused and determined while apparating, and think clearly about where you're going. Splinching is what happens when you're not concentrating enough. It hurts a lot, and it can be dangerous if you leave a lot of your body behind." She looked up as the professor got the healer for some ridiculousness occurring with the special powers of several students(she doubted that the healer could actually do much about it). Now that... that actually brought the first smile of the lesson to her face. Because it was funny. And it cheered her up just a little bit, causing light blue flowers to grow at her feet. |
Don't take it personal, department head Bagnold. Atlas rarely greeted professors in general for one reason or another and quite preferred to simply appear in his seat from the instructor's perspective. He did offer a little nod in acknowledgement to the woman's greeting (he was not disrespectful on purpose...most of the time) but otherwise stayed quiet in his pseudo contentment on the stump beside Rajesh. Nothing to read into the position, really, it was just a vacant seat the Gryffindor had decided to occupy Atlas wasn't interested in entertaining the typical question and answer portion of things, necessary for some...but not himself since he had done plenty of his own research on the subject and was very proficient in the theoretical side of things. Being limited to becoming of-age to do anything worthwhile was really lame and apparition and magic outside of school were things he could not WAIT to tap into. So, the sixth year remained silent (really for the best since he was likely to provide some kind of sarcastic answer that was funny to only himself (like spacecrafts and spaceplanes) and instead opted to just sort of zone out and not focus on anything in particular. It was necessary. So he mostly heard the chaos that had erupted nearby that demanded the attention of the healer. Even more necessary that he totally and completely zone out. He had been packing an apple a day all term, after all. Again, Atlas remained silent as the next wave of theoretical questions presented itself and tried his darndest to NOT thinking about the word flying too much - which, naturally, meant that he was going to focus even more on it. Don't think about neon pink polka dotted dragons! In his next breath...his school bag began slowly lifting up off the ground beside him and Atlas' fingers fidgeted even more rigorously with his metal matchsticks to try and refocus his attention. Please...don't...please stop....stop stop stop....stopstopstopstop... |
SPOILER!!: Individual replies After throwing glance down at her watch and trusting that Healer Mancini was helping the two boys it was high time to summarize and get the practice portion started. Clapping her hands together to get attention Aurora lectured."Good answers everyone! The three D's of Apparition are Destination which means you have to have a clear idea of where you want to transport yourself. Determination means that you have to be extremely focused on apparating, you can't let any other thoughts distract you or you might splinch yourself. The last one is Deliberation which means that you have to follow through with apparating you can't change your mind mid apparition it can lead to bad splinching." While she had spoken the three D's had magically appeared in the air in shiny gold letters to in case anyone wanted to take notes. "Splinching occurs when a witch/wizard apparates unsuccessfully, leaving a part of their body in their former location. To get splinched can hurt badly and be very unpleasant. How much or how little your splinch off varies, and can be just a strand of hair to a whole limb like say a hand. Most body parts that have been splinched can though be healed by a healer at St Mungos." ::::: "Now let's get to the fun practice time! Now as you might have seen I've placed several rings on the ground over there that you can start to practice on to warm up. The idea is to apparate into and out of the rings and from one ring to another ring if you are confident by using the three D's. There is no incantation for apparating just a simple turn on the spot." When she spoke Aurora had gestured to the rings and then levitated one ring over to the ground in front of her as she demonstrated how she apparated into the ring and out of the ring. "If you feel confident and want a challenge you can also try apparating from lily pad to lily pad on the lake water. So get practicing on apparating! If you need a hand just signal with you hands or call me over. Have fun!" Aurora gestured out to the big green lily pads set up in an obstacle fashion. OOC: Main practice time! You can have your students try to apparate from ring to ring which is the easier course or from lily pad to lily pad out on the lake water. Please don't rp any severe splinching. Be creative, if you want to have your student struggle with apparating and falling into the water or so on then go for it! Aurora will be around. You'll have have until friday/saturday to rp practicing apparition before i'll wrap up the lesson. |
