The weather is warming up, though still often chilly or windy, as it is today. And Herbology class is taking place out on the grounds, near the hedgerows that grow here and there around the school, making off areas and forming little boundaries. Here and there a few early flowers and herbs are starting to blossom.
When you get to the right place, you will know it, because Professor Devries has tied up colored streamers (in the Hogwarts House colors) to some of the branches to guide students to class (besides, they look kind of nice!). He's also set up an easel with a large board on it which is covered at present by a dark blue cloth. Devries is there leaning against a tree and wearing a large blue and green sweater knitted in a traditional-looking pattern, with a navy, knitted fisherman's cap on his balding head.
Just gather around the easel and talk amongst yourselves until everyone gets here. Class will begin shortly. CLASS HAS BEGUN! [OOC: If you haven't posted yet, just rp your character like they've been there all along (unless you really want to find out how annoyed the easy-going Tapio is about tardiness)]

It wasn’t that chilly as before, to which Jude was happy. He welcomed the change in weather, even if it signaled that OWLs were drawing closer. At present? Jude was feeling slightly exhausted as he had been up late last night {or early this morning} practicing Vanishing spells. But without his best friend to help him out with that at the time, he was still having a lot of difficulties.
The sparse flowers that were popping up made him smile though, and soon he spotted the streamers seemingly guiding the way. Devries was right: they DID look nice and Jude appreciated the man for the effort he made in keeping things lively. The Huffflepuff rather liked Devries anyway, since the conversation at the Greenhouses last December.
“Hi, professor!’’ he called, lifting his hand in greeting as well. Grinning, he added, "The streamers sure are a great touch!’’

Today was a good day to be outside. It was warmer than usual so she didn’t mind having an outdoors lesson. The warmer weather promised that summer would be here before she knew it. But before she got there, she needed to have a few conversations with some people to make sure she set things right.
The lesson area was fairly easy to spot thanks to Professor Devries adding streamers to the path. It was a nice touch. Bursts of colour along the path to guide them to their destination. Getting closer, she saw Devries and Jude were present near the easel. “Hi Professor! Nice weather today. How are you?” she asked before approaching Jude. “Hey Jude!” She gave him a happy smile.

Mercer was warm with his little knit cap pulled down over his ears. They used to sit on top of his glasses, but without those to tell him where to stop, his hat was half covering his eyes. He'd definitely taken a branch to the head on the way down, but it didn't occur to him to pull his hat up.
"Hi, Professor! If this is a party, you have to have cake. My mum says that you can't have a party without cake." He liked the streamers, although he sort of wanted to braid them.
V had spotted Lisa heading to Herbology and hadn’t wanted to walk alone sooooo she had sped up but not enough, it seemed, because Lisa had arrived.
And now, Victoria was panting, out of breath, and a sweaty forehead.
Yuck.
“H-hey, Lisa - “ she said as she plopped to sit on the ground. She nodded at Jude and gave a look of annoyance in Mercer’s direction. All students under third year got that look because they were just that - annoying.
“P-professor,” she took a deeeeeep breath and exhaled slowly. She really needed to up her cardio game, especially as a dancer. This was PITIFUL.

By now, any bitterness he felt towards this subject had disappeared. He was still terrible at it even after all the tutoring Sadie was giving him...but at least he was not being terrible out of spite anymore. Even when he was, he still tried his best not to kill too many plants - Auntie June had made sure to instill a whole lot of guilt about that ... and he did feel a little bad for kind of sort of instigating the whole BURN THE GREENHOUSES a couple of terms back or whatever.
Approaching the group, Atlas even managed a polite smile towards the professor. He had never been RUDE to the man, but change was hard for him sometimes and the comfort and safety net of family teaching a subject you were rubbish at being ripped out from under you was a lot to deal with at times. "Hello, professor," he even greeted before his bright blue eyes scanned those present and...he felt a weird sort of twist. He happened to catch the unnecessary glare that Victoria had thrown in Little Quirky Claw's direction and, well, there was a big moment of personal deja vu which was all the initiative he needed to go stand by that kid. "Yo, Mercer. Dug up anything else nifty on the grounds recently?"
Still not admitting to the rock "coffin" being his own doing, by the way.
Fleeting smiles were offer to Jude and a little lingering one to Lisa...but soon enough shifted his attention back to Mercer.

The shift in weather made one Ravenclaw very very happy. (The Ravenclaw was Ash, duh.) She skipped over to class, admiring flowers as she went and arriving just on time. "Helloo professor. I like your hat." She scanned the place and decided to chill with Lisa. (Ash secretly thought of her as a little sister). "I can't wait to see what we're doing today." She'd been a little down recently, but today was beautiful. And as she'd told an older student, there was no reason to feel sad when hanging out with plants.

Desiree was always a little nervous when she saw a lesson notice that said “wear clothes you wouldn’t mind getting dirty”. To this Princess Puff, there was no such thing! Fortunately she’d gotten a lot better at cleaning spells this year, so hopefully if she did get dirty, she wouldn’t stay that way long. Just in case, she came prepared if her cleaning spells failed, dressed in pink coveralls and matching sneakers. Her dark hair was tied in a high ponytail, up and out of the way of anything that might mess it up.
As she approached, the first thing she noticed was the colorful streamers. Ooh, fun! Were they having a party today? That would be the best class ever! Spotting the professor, she smiled and waved. Professor Devires sort of reminded her of the Beast, big and intimidating-looking but good inside. “Hi, Professor,” she greeted, noticing the interesting pattern on his sweater. “I like your sweater.”
Bright blue eyes scanning the crowd, she greeted Jude with an extra princessy wave but ultimately found a place to stand beside Summer. “Hi!” She greeted her friend with a warm smile. Tilting her head to get a better look at the streamers, she mused out loud, “What do you think the streamers are for?”

Jacoby slinked out to his Herbology class it felt like it shouldn't be this late in the term. He hadn't even really slinked too often to get into trouble yet. He hadn't caused a big prank like the Weasly's yet. Sighing he kept going as he approached noticing streamers. "Hello professor" He said dutifully.
Turning his head he noticed Desiree walking in going toward Jude and Summer. His eyes watched carefully as everyone began to join the class and wondered what they would be doing.

Lisa would have slowed down more on her way to the lesson if she noticed V sooner. Unfortunately, she noticed her right as she arrived. Big beamy smile for her good friend. “V!! Hi. Want some water?” she asked, reaching into her bag to offer friend some water.
Mercer’s comment earned a small, amused smile from this Ravenclaw. He did have a point. Streamers and cake went hand in hand.
She noticed Atlas’ lingering gaze which caused her to take her time with her glance in his direction. She offered a smile paired with the slight wiggle of fingers before she heard someone settle next to her. Glancing to her side, she found Ash there. Merlin. They hadn’t hung out nearly enough as they had in prior years. “Me either…… How are you?” She missed Ash.

It really wasn't fair that Professor's could wear whatever they wanted and yet students were stuck wearing the tragic school uniform. Kinsay would have voiced as much, but she wasn't feeling much like herself these days. And so instead, she only quietly approached Professor D and politely looked his way in greeting as she ducked her head and settled by little Mercer, on the side opposite of Atlas.
Were they friends?
She only gave the thought a moment's consideration before reaching out to adjust his cap for him so that it didn't cover his eyes as much. "Hi, babybug. Cute hat." He had good taste, but would benefit from some styling pointers. Maybe sometime when Kins was feeling up to it, she was unfortunately listless these days.

Tapio nodded back to Miss Rivers, who seemed unusually listless today. Perhaps she just did not enjoy having class outdoors. However, Tapio resolved to keep an eye on her in case she looked like she was becoming ill.
Glancing around, Tapio saw that nearly everyone appeared to be there, so he stood up straight, cleared his throat, and began class. "Hello, everyone, and thank you for join us on this nice, brisk spring day. Today I've asked you to come out on the grounds for a special reason. But before we get to that, I want to ask you to look at these images and see if you can identify any of these plants." ~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Jude was actually humming happily to himself as he waited for things to get started. It was going to be a GREAT lesson, even if he was tired! He could feel it! As if this feeling needed to be cemented, he saw one of his favourite humans approaching: Lisa! “Hey, Lisa!’’ He gave her a warm smile before lowering his voice to ask, “Doing better today?” He didn’t know the full details of all that had happened but he was protective of her. His gaze shifted from her to Victoria, catching the Slytherin’s nod. Jude gave her a tentative smile. Oh hello there, Atlas! Jude offered his fellow fifth year a smile as well. You know who always got his admiration when it came to outfits? Desiree! She wore the cutest things ever! He returned her enthusiastic wave with one of his own before giving Jacoby a grin.
Sometime later they were diving into the lesson. Oh… identifying plants. That was a good way to pick the students’ brains. Jude tore his eyes away from the cloth after it had folded itself to study the images. He thought the yellow ones were dandelions but it was another image that held his attention. The Hufflepuff raised his hand tentatively. Tentatively because he may be completely off with his response. “I think the image in the bottom row at the middle depicts starflowers… ? If they are starflowers, they’re also called borage.” Herbology studies were clearly coming along nice-ish.
“YES!” She exclaimed when Lisa offered her some water. PLEASE. She felt so parched suddenly! “Thanks,” she said as she took the bottle and took a looooong sip. Lisa really was a lifesaver! How was it her friend was usually prepared for anything? Was it a Ravenclaw thing? V thought so.
She eyed Ash as the fifth year approached, but she did nod at her politely to show Ash she had noticed her. “Ash,” she greeted right before Professor Devries started class.
and honestly??? V didn’t know the names of any of them. How would they know? Like when would V recognize any of them unless they were like suuuuper common….the yellow ones maybe? But she didn’t want to guess and be WRONG. So she stayed quiet and rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet.

Jude was smiling at her. She maintained her smile until he asked her his question which caused her smile to drop slightly. How was she? She felt better than the last time they talked. She paused before nudging him with her arm. "In fine form today."
She turned her attention back to her good friend who looked as if she was going to pass out. Good. She took the water. So she watched V happily gulp down the water. Helping friends out... That made her smile. It made her feel good. Needed. "Of course," she nodded and silently hoped that there would be some water left for her.
Lisa smiled back at Professor Devries' response. Yes, spring was on the way. Hopefully the groundhog didn't become scared by its own shadow; otherwise, they'd have more weeks of winter! If they did, this would foil Lisa's outfit choice for the dance which she would NOT have! She watched as a few other students arrived, occasionally throwing a wave and smile here and there to the ones she knew. Then Professor Devries started his lesson, asking them to turn their attention to the board in front of them. As he revealed what was on the board, Lisa tilted her head slightly to the right as she analysed the six plants. She recognised two of them from the playground near her home. The white one with the wispy parts was one that was often found in the field. And the yellow one... She could have sworn she saw one near her halmeoni's house in Busan.
"Is one of them a dandelion? The top right one?"
She didn't know the scientific name for it but she was like 35% sure that at least one of the photos was a dandelion.
Was there something up with the students these days? She had noticed some of them looking sad or more quiet recently, and she had no clue why. Well... it was Hogwarts, and it was spring. But she'd check up on them later anyway. Starting with Lisa. They hadn't talked in forever and ever. "I am as alright as I can be, considering. You?" She grinned at V. "Yup, that's definitely my name." Then she laughed. She was chilling today.
"I only recognize the dandelions... is the bottom right baby's breath? I can't tell. I feel like I've definitely seen the bottom left, but I can't tell it off the top of my head." Plants were more Brandon's thing. "All of them are pretty." Hey, that didn't really contribute anything to the discussion. But they WERE pretty. It had to be said. (She hoped the professor wouldn't mind her pulling out her sketchbook. Because she was pulling out her sketchbook.)
Summer was happy when she noticed Desiree, she gave her a small wave and then she watched as she walked over and asked about streamers. "Maybe we are going to have a water fight?" Summer giggled, but then she noticed that the Professor was speaking.
Summer raised her hand, for some reason her mind was blank, she knew her mother would be cross after all her mother loved plants and herbology had been her favorite subject. "Is on a rose, you know one of those plants you give to someone when you propose to them?"
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll
Desiree couldn’t help but giggle along with Summer, though the answer got a slightly confused blink. She didn’t understand how the streamers could be used in a water fight - unless they were charmed to be water-resistant, they’d just fall apart as soon as they got wet. And frankly, she hoped they wouldn’t be used that way. Getting all wet was not princessy! But she wasn’t going to burst her friend’s bubble by pointing that out. “Maybe so,” she replied with a shrug.
Her eyes shifted to the front as Professor Devries spoke, focusing intently on the flowers on the board. The only one she recognized immediately was the yellow one, the dandelion. Those made good flower crowns, and she would know. She’d made a lot of flower crowns in her lifetime! But some older girl had already identified that one, and as the daughter of two former professors, she knew that most professors didn’t like when you repeat answers.
She stared at the board, lost in thought, and her eyes were eventually drawn to the plant at the bottom. The cluster of white flowers looked a lot like a flower she’d seen before, but she wasn’t 100% sure. Timidly raising her hand, she waited to be called on and said, “Is the one at the bottom Queen Anne’s lace?” That was the only guess she had!

"And no, the picture at the bottom is neither Baby's Breath nor Queen Anne's Lace, although those are both good guesses. It's Ground Elder, also known as Goutweed and many other names. Its flowers grow on umbrella-like branches, where Baby's Breath sprays are a little rounder. And Queen Anne's Lace and Ground Elder are both from the same family of plants, but the Ground Elder leaves grow in three points. Tapio would have liked to go on and on about the similarities and differences between these three plants, but time was passing and the lesson must go on.
"And now, here are the common and official names of these plants." Devries gave another wave of his wand and words appeared underneath each of the pictuires. "These are what are sometimes called hedgerow herbs, because they grow wild out among the hedgerows of Great Britain."
Tapio waited until the students (those who were on the ball) had copied down the names and then went on. "And now, can anyone tell me anything about any one of these plants?"

Jude was pleased that he was on track when it came to the plant he had zoned in on. Indeed it was quite recognisable by the shape of the flowers like Devries had said. He cast a glance and a smile at Lisa; it was great to see her on track as well. Before long, the plants were named and that meant there were notes to be made. Jude wrote in his neat, cursive handwriting the regular names and scientific ones.
Okay, so which of these plants did he want to volunteer information about? Jude scanned the board once more, honing in on the Stinging Nettles. A hand was raised. “Stinging Nettles has tiny ‘hairs’ on its stems and leaves. If one comes in contact with those hairs, it gives the sensation of being stung… or bitten, I guess. Anyway, despite that, the leaves are still used and ingested by humans.”

Mercer grinned broadly when Atlas sidled up to him, and he pulled up his satchel to show the older boy every little thing that he'd dug up lately. The castle was a thousand years old, and the grounds were full of interesting treasures. And bugs. And rocks.
He dropped his satchel when Kinsay popped out of nowhere and adjusted his hat. HE COULD SEE. HIS EYEBALLS WERE NO LONGER PLAGUED BY FUZZ. "Hi, KIZ. Hi. Do you know Atlas? He's real tall. Digs sometimes. Real handsome, right? You got a girlfriend, Atlas? This is my cousin and she is beautiful, right?"
Oh, right, class is starting, and they're looking at plants. Pretty! He squinted at the pictures, but again, without the glasses, it was hard to tell what they were. Green, mostly. Flowery? Sort of. It helped when other people mentioned them, so Mercer could jump in and participate. "They taste good! You can make dandelion tea. And wine. And probably milkshakes!"
Oooh, Lisa. There was no water left. V drank it all and put the empty bottle in her bag. But ah, refreshing! V was no longer dying of THIRST.
Moving on to less interesting things - PLANTS.
V had to admit that dandelions were really pretty. They were yellow and bright, and Victoria often found herself liking yellow flowers more than others. She was still trying to figure out which flowers would go with her look for the dance. Well, she and Stewie's look, since she had officially asked her friend. The thought of the dance made her eye Lisa for a second as she thought about Lisa going with DANIEL and Daniel admitting he would have gone with her had she asked before Lisa and - and -
Ugh.
Nightmare.
V raised her hand. "Aren't dandelions weeds? Or did I make that up? Because I could have," she shrugged, again, worried about seeming wrong, dumb, or both.

So the white flowers at the bottom of the board weren't Queen Anne's lace. Desiree was mildly disappointed that her guess had been wrong, but at least it was somewhere in the ballpark, right? Ohhhh, so that's how to tell the three kinds of flowers apart. She filed that bit of information away in her brain for later. If nothing else, it would be good to know when making a bouquet because roses and ground elder or Queen Anne's lace wouldn't look anywhere near as nice as roses and baby's breath.
Speaking of which, ground elder? Goutweed? Those were funny names! Did all of the other names for that plant sound just as funny? She was lowkey dying to ask Professor Devries about it, but she'd hold off since they were moving on. Maybe later…
Hearing the next question, Desiree looked back at the board. Truth be told, she didn't know much about any of those plants! Again her mind went back to the dandelion and its use in flower crowns. Come to think of it, she supposed all of the plants on the board would make pretty flower crowns. Except for stinging nettles because ouch! Was that what they all had in common? And how did those plants relate to the streamers?
Ooh, were they going to have a garden tea party and use those plants to make flower crowns and decorations? Probably not, but that would be so much fun! Wait a minute, tea! The thought of a tea party jogged Desiree's memory, and she recalled seeing a box of tea in her grand-mère's kitchen. A box of tea that listed dandelion as one of the ingredients. Her hand shot up, and she said, "Dandelion can be used to make tea." A sudden thought occurred to her, and she added, "Can the other plants on the board be used in tea too?"

Ah, it was always gratifying to see students taking careful notes! "Right you are, Mr. Anders. Stinging Nettle got its name for a reason and it will indeed sting you if you brush against it, although some say that if you grasp it firmly, it won't hurt as much. Nevertheless, you should be wearing your dragon hide gloves today if you handle this one. And once it's cooked, it no longer stings and can be eaten in a number of dishes.""

Ah, good, Tapio had been hoping Mercer would push his hat out of his eyes before they started wandering through the hedgerows. "Indeed, many herbs and plants are edible, and in fact, all of these are. All parts of the dandelion are edible, and tea and wine are just two ways this plant is used. I...I haven't heard of a dandelion milkshake before, but I suppose it's possible." Now Tapio was wondering if you could make dandelion wine ice cream; he'd have to try that out at home during the summer.

Tapio noticed that Victoria seemed to be looking a bit better than when she got to class and hoped she would not fall ill during class; he should probably keep an eye on her once they ventured out into the fields. [b]"Dandelions are often called weeds, but they are actually an extremely useful plant and rather pretty in their own right. What we call a 'weed' is, after all, just 'a plant in the wrong place.' One of the reasons to harvest dandelions in the wild like this is because they can be invasive in a lawn or garden, but out here among the hedges they can grow as they please without harm."

"Yes, as Mr. Branxton already pointed out, dandelion tea is one of that plants uses. And yes, almost all these plants can be used in teas. Although some of them are mostly used in medicinal teas, rather than something you'd want to have for your afternoon tea."
"Yes, well thank you all for your excellent answers. All these herbs are very useful in cooking, medicine, and magic, and they all grow wild all around the hedgerows of this country! Here is some more information on each of them." Here Tapio waved his wand and a large scroll uncurled itself and flew up to drape over one of the low hanging branches.
SPOILER!!: What's on the Scroll
The first herb is called Stinging Nettle, which gives you some idea of one of its properties. Also called "Devil's Leaf" in some places, it was brought to Britain by the Romans. It has large, dark-green, frond-like leaves and long purplish-white flowers, and it's covered with hollow, stinging hairs. Therefore, you'll need to be careful to wear your dragon-hide gloves if you find any to harvest. However, it loses its sting when it's cooked and it can be eaten in soup and herbal teas. Cloth can also be made from its fibers, similar to linen, and it's used to make a green dye. Medically, it's used as an astringent and a stimulating tonic. Magically, it's used for protection, healing, and love spells, and for couteracting dark magic. It grows from March to May, so you should be able to find it growing around.
Wild Garlic, the second herb, grows from April to June. It's also called 'Ramsons' or 'Cow-leeks,' because cows love it (though if they eat too much, their milk tastes garlicky). You'll find it carpeting the woodlands or in the shade of the hedgerows. It has broad, bright-green leaves with little clusters of white, star-like flowers, and it has a pungent aroma. It tastes like a milder form of regular garlic, and can be used the same kind of way in cooking. You can also roll up leaves and leave in a flask of oil for a few weeks to make a marinade or a potion. Medicinally, it's used for cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive ailments, and to sterilize wounds and prevent infection. Wizards and witches use it for protection, healing, love magic, and protection against theft and dark magic.
You probably all recognize the third herb, Dandelion, a perennial that grows year round, and all its parts are edible and it's high in nutrients.. Its flowers are actually many small flowers, ranging from yellow to orange, growing on a single composite flowerhead that rises on a tall stalk above the leaves. Its pollen can cause allergies, but it's said your wish will come true if you blow a seed-head and all the seeds come off. It can be eaten raw or cooked, its roots are used in drinks, its leaves can make tea, its flowers can be made into wine or into a dye. It can be used for a diuretic, a tonic, and a cure for liver or digestive ailments. Magically, it's used in divination and to enhance psychic powers.
The next herb, Corn Mint, is a herbaceous perennial that grows from April to Sept. in moist places and along streams. It has square-ish stems that grow from 4 in. up to 2 ft. tall, creeping roots, and little clusters of pale purple or white flowers growing around the stem.It looks like peppermint but its taste is both sharper and less 'minty'. It can be used in cooking like mint, especially in savory dishes, or eaten raw in salads or sandwiches. It can be used in tea for digestions, cough medicines, menthol creams, or mouthwashes. In magic, it's used for healing, spells for money or love, travel, and protection.
The fifth herb is called Borage, also known as 'Starflower.' It's an annual, self-seeding plant native to the Mediterranean. It has tall stalks with drooping, fuzzy leaves and delicate blue flowers with triangular, pointed petals, and it's bristly and hairy all over (but don't worry, it doesn't sting like Nettle!) It has a light cucumber taste and has been used in salads, summer drinks, and garnishes. However, in recent times, it's been found to pose a risk of liver ailments or cancer, so it's not used in the kitchen so much. Bees that use its nectar make a light, delicate honey. Medically, it makes an excellent anti-inflammatory poultice, a wash for mouth sores, and a relief from the itch and ringworm. Magically, it enhances courage and psycic powers. It grows from May to September, so it's a little early for it, but you may find some early bloomers.
The last herb is Ground Elder, also known as 'Bishop's Weed' or 'Goat Weed.' It's a spinach-like member of the carrot family which was also brought to Britain by the ROmans. It has tall stalks with toothed leaves shaped like a goat's foot and umbrella-like breanches of tiny white flowers. It's best harvested wild, as it tends to take over a garden. Its leaves have a nutty flavor and it's good in salads or cooked in butter. It's used in poultices for gout and arthritis and taken internally as a diuretic or sedative. Magically, it's used for protection, healing, and spells for prosperity and sleep. It's probably to early to find any at Hogwarts this time of year, though it will be around later in the summer.
"Now as you may have guessed, we're going to go out and try to harvest some of these herbs in a few minutes. The Stinging Nettle, Wild Garlic, Dandelions, and Corn Mint should all be in bloom by now. It's a little early for Borage, though you may find some early bloomers, and I doubt you'll find any Ground Elder until May or June. Please be sure to wear your dragon hide gloves when harvesting the Stinging Nettle!
But first, we're going to practice a couple of spells we need to harvest and process wild herbs. The first is Diffindo--"Diff-INN-doh", and the wand movement goes like this." Here Tapio made the curious jagged wand movement, moving his wand up, then slashing it down and to the right, then up again. "You'll use this spell to cut the plants you find. And the second spell is a variant use of the Tergeo spell, but here it's used to clean up and dry off plants that are harvested wild, to make them easier to store. The incantation is pronounced "TURR--gee--oh" and the wand movement is to simply point at the target." Tapio demonstrated this spell as well.
"Some of the older students may be familiar with the Trimming Charm, Flipnsnipwitit. That is good for delicate trimming work, but for harvesting plants, Diffindo is the preferred charm. If you aren't familiar with Flipnsnipwitit, don't worry, we will be covering that spell, as well as a Drying Charm, in our next lesson..
"Now I want you all to practice these spells before we go on to the next activity. You can pair up with one or more partners, if you like, or do it on your own."
[OOC: As the professor said, break off and practice the spells, either solo, in pairs, or in small groups. You'll have about 48 hours before we go on to the main activity.]
