| | Second-Floor Corridor Arithmancy and the Headmistress' Office are the primary features on this arguably boring floor. Of course there are plenty of nooks and crannies to explore here, though the doors that fill the second-floor corridor, for the most part, open up to storerooms and vacant classrooms or offices. At least there are plenty of statues and portraits and a few suits of armour scattered about to make exploring a little more interesting.
Not far after stepping onto the second floor, the corridor opens up to a large, high-ceilinged foyer that branches off to the rest of the corridors on this level of the castle. One corridor containing a portrait of Bridget Wenlock will take you directly to the Arithmancy classroom; a large stone gargoyle can be seen in the distance down the middle corridor; and the other corridor will lead you toward an antechamber and, further down, the girls' bathroom. This part of the castle is not carpeted because of Moaning Myrtle's frequent habit of flooding the bathroom.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Brandon Fox Hufflepuff Fifth Year Hogwarts RPG Name: Phoebe Calypso [s]Dupont[/s] Slytherin Third Year | Mamie Which came first, the phoenix or the flame? Ash was humming something. It was a song. It was a sad song, probably. Maybe bittersweet. And complicated too. The difficulty of getting the notes right really helped her not think.
Because thinking sucked. All she'd think about was her impending doom. And more importantly, how she wouldn't be remembered, or if she was, everyone would be sad. do do do do. Ash needed another distraction. She had been humming the same 10 songs over and over again. For like, over an hour. Not good. do do do do. mmmm mmm mmm. She did a handstand and kept humming. oh yeah, that was way better. Harder to think straight when you're upside down, apparently. Ash paced the corridor, on her hands. Back and forth. Back and forth. Hopefully nobody was coming. That would be a weird conversation. She reckoned she'd just say it was for fun. |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sophia Svensson #556B2F Slytherin Fifth Year Hogwarts RPG Name: Eulalia Walles (#F48037) Hufflepuff Fourth Year | Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE! Mamie was heading back to the common room from the library. Those were the only two places she felt like she was allowed to be nowadays--the common room, where it was theoretically protected from non-Hufflepuffs like she was certain Rosier and his band of bozos were, and the library, where was studying up for all her wizarding classes. Because she was a wizard.
She thought she heard some humming as she walked down the corridor, and slowed down to peek around the corner. Not that she really thought the Hooded Squad guys or the headmaster would be wandering around humming, but...better safe than sorry.
It was just Ashley, though!
Upside down?
Mamie stepped further into the corridor and leaned over sideways so she could look her friend a little more straight-on. "Hello?" she said, like a question. What was Ashley doing? |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Brandon Fox Hufflepuff Fifth Year Hogwarts RPG Name: Phoebe Calypso [s]Dupont[/s] Slytherin Third Year | Which came first, the phoenix or the flame? Well this was awkward. How was she supposed to explain this one? Yes, I am humming and standing on my head because that's a perfectly normal and acceptable thing to do. Nope. So she just decided to not explain it. "Heyyyyyy Mamie..... What's up?" She made no effort to walk right-side-up. Instead she just looked at the girl like this was a normal occurrence. "How's life treating you? It's treating me great. You can tell, because I'm upside down." She said it in a mildly humorous way. Why? Because it was a joke. Life sucked. And that's why she was upside down. Duh. "I can stand up and walk normally if it would be better for conversation." She smiled. Mamie was always fun to hang out with. |

Was Ashley going to stay upside down? Leaning sideways was not a natural posture for the Hufflepuff. "Your feet are up? I guess?" She wasn't sure if Ash was purposefully making a joke about the dual meaning of up. "Whyyyy??" Mamie was....very confused. She felt like she needed to be upside down, too, and maybe then she'd understand. "Wait a minute!"
Mamie knelt down on the floor facing away from Ashley, put her hands down too. Oh, and her head, on the floor. She pulled her knees one by one onto her elbows and looked...up? from her tripod headstand at Ashley. "Is this right?" she asked, trying not to wobble or fall over. She...she was still confused, even upside down. Why were they like this? |

She balanced on her left hand. It seemed like a very careful stance. Weird combo. Crazy, reckless, strange maneuvers executed with grace and humor. Yeah. That was Ash."Don't try it." But seriously, what was Mamie doing here? "Yes. My feet are up. What is up with you?" They needed to stop being upside down. The hufflepuff looked like she was going to fall over, and Ash felt that there was too much blood rushing to her own head. She gracefully stood up, as if she was doing the second half of a one-handed cartwheel. Or something like that. Instead of doing a handstand, she leaned against a wall in a cool way. "How are you?" |

Mamie was very impressed by Ashley's single-handed-stand. She did not think she'd be able to get her legs straightened without falling over. She certainly wasn't going to try without some intense cushioning charms on the floor, either. Then Ashley was standing upright in the regular direction again!
Mamie unfortunately hurried to right herself, too, and tumbled upright onto her bum. She sat on the floor, a little dizzy from the blood rushing out of her head, and looked up at Ashley, who looked verrrry calm and collected, leaning against the wall like that. "I'm okay?" she said it like a question.
She looked at her friend for a minute, eyes a little bit squinty while she thought about whether to explain. Ashley seemed trustworthy. "I'm having trouble in History of Magic," she admitted. And anti-Muggle Studies. And divination. Frankly, anything that required more thinking, and less doing. And she wasn't going to even bring up flying, because she felt like she was at least improving outside of class there. But no matter how many hours she spent staring at the history of magic textbook, it just...it didn't stick. Was there a brain sticking charm? |

She wasn't dead, and that was the same as okay. Well, no it wasn't. Physically fine didn't even mean okay. But Ash like to pretend that it did. So she continued in the conversation with a sense of cheerfulness that she clearly did not feel. "I'll tell you a secret. Actual history doesn't matter. You can stretch the truth as long as it makes muggles look bad, so being historically inaccurate isn't a problem." She rolled her eyes. In her opinion, the neo-alliance was making up their opinions on the basis of made-up "facts" and exaggerated versions of truth. "I find a great way to succeed in classes and in life is to be a completely different person and just ignore reality. If it helps." |

Mamie hugged her knees to her chest as she had decided to stay on the floor. For now. Ashley's advice...while probably good advice, made her cringe a little. She could deal with the lying out loud, during class, but ignoring reality? Being a completely different person? That was not in her skill set. "It's hard to keep it all straight, though," she said. "And shouldn't history be easiest? They can take away our brooms and make Flying class harder, or make us do chores by hand, but they're not doing anything to stop us thinking." Well, except Crucio, but Mamie luckily hadn't landed on the bad end of an Unforgiveable Curse yet. She hoped she never would. "It's just, Ash, it's hard to actually learn anything." She looked up at her friend. Ashley was a Muggleborn, too. Surely she felt the same way? Like, not only was the Neo-Alliance attempting to brain-wash them, they were actually making it hard for them to learn at all. |

"Good work" at this point was a low bar. Plus, Ash didn't really care. Like, sorry, wizard university. Didn't know you wanted me to focus on my studies. Thought you wanted to kill me. My mistake. "Anything that you could possibly use is buried under so much garbage." Which personally Ash had no problem sifting through. But Ash wasn't everyone. If she was, they wouldn't be in this hostage situation. Or at this school. |

Mamie decided it was time to stand up. She didn't want any of those Scary Squad or Neo-Alliance cultists to come along while she was on the ground. They might make her stay on the ground, and sitting on the floor was only fun when it was voluntary.
So up she got. She silently agreed with Ashley about the new curriculum garbage, but was too chicken to say so out loud. "Have you been doing extra studying in the library?" she asked Ashley. She knew Quinn had, and wasn't sure if that was a normal Ravenclaw thing or a subtle form of insurrection. She was all for secret rebellion, but extra studying would not be productive for her. Book learning was too difficult. |

Who cared about grades? Ravenclaw Ash was smart. She knew what her priorities were. She had a better chance of being a gamer than she did of being accepted into the wizarding world. She had a better chance of dying young than being accepted. But she wanted to make as many awful people as possible feel very uncomfortable with their actions. "Nobody can make me study. It'll never help me out." |

"Keeping up with actual schoolwork is hard enough, without trying to learn extra spells," she said. She did not mention her extra flying practice, not because she thought it was supposed to be a secret, but...well she was worried if Rosier or his buddies found out a Muggleborn was getting extra help in flying class, they might take it away. "I think working hard usually pays off," she said with a frown. Studying would never help Ashley out? Mamie felt that was just....so incorrect. Like saying that stars were actually fish and the sky was just a big ocean above them. "Maybe not in grades, but grades aren't everything." Like, if she worked hard to learn a new spell, then she could use that spell in her life. |

Preserving relationships, practicing sports, doing fun stuff... none of it's here. So no I don't really care about my grades. They mean nothing." Nothing meant anything anymore. She could get acceptable in everything and it wouldn't matter. Even if she was getting Es and Os in everything. Those letters didn't mean anything. They wouldn't even help her get a muggle job. "But yeah, I do learn extra spells on the weekend. Healing, defensive, utility mostly." Offensive spells would not protect her from a cult. But defensive and healing spells would. So she chose to focus on those. |

Mamie did not anticipate ever getting an O. E's, maybe, in flying and charms. But Os? Oh no, absolutely no. |

Mamie did not anticipate ever getting an O. E's, maybe, in flying and charms. But Os? Oh no, absolutely no. What spells? "Practical ones, like episkey and the bandaging charm. I really wanna learn more complicated ones, like Vulnera Sanentur, but I think that might be a little advanced for me. Also, how do you think the killing curse works? Is it like organ failure? Maybe you could use a defibrillator or shock charm on someone like that. Or other medical treatments. But that probably wouldn't work." It was a dumb idea, really. "I don't want to believe that it's 100% lethal. That's too overpowered. But maybe it is like that." The world shouldn't work like that. Two words and she could be dead. "I'd just have to try to block it with a chair or something." The world was a weird and awful place. Ash wished she could do another handstand. But instead she just stood there like a normal person and looked at Mamie normally. "You learned any extra spells?" |

Truth be told, she hadn't been to the hospital wing many times herself and if ever she did, wasn't paying attention to how Recard healed her. Just grateful that she did. "You think Muggle medicine could undo a killing curse?" she thought that's what Ashley had been saying. It would be a wild twist on the Neo-Alliance's beliefs, for sure. If something Muggle could overdo what was probably the most powerful and definitely the most dangerous spell in wizardkind. "Could you do a de...defrib..defribilliator with magic?" she asked, remembering that Muggle electronics did not work at Hogwarts. Otherwise...no joy on the potential workaround.
She was pretty sure a defibrillator just put electricity on somebody's heart, so as long as there was a spell that could do an electric shock, or maybe they had an electric eel in the magical creatures preserve... And also, how would they even test Ashley's theory? Mamie did not think there would be any volunteers. |

And yeah, there are shock charms, like for someone who drowned or something. But there's no way to test it." You'd need a recently Avada Kedavra'd person, who was willing to let you test it, and you'd have to make sure you didn't cry all over their corpse when you failed. Gross. "It's dumb, probably." She sighed. Why was everything in the wizarding world 100 million times harder? It just didn't work by the same rules. |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sophia Svensson #556B2F Slytherin Fifth Year Hogwarts RPG Name: Eulalia Walles (#F48037) Hufflepuff Fourth Year | Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE! Mamie nodded. It wasn't a dumb idea, she thought, but not the most practical. Did wizards do experiments on animals like the Muggles used to? She thought not, but then again, they did transfiguration. She wondered if they could transfigure a doorknob into a rat and test Ashley's theory. Did a rat that was originally a doorknob have feelings? She'd have to ask Carton in their next transfiguration class.
She wondered if they could numb somebody with magic like the Muggles do at the dentist, so they wouldn't feel the Crucio. That would be an easier thing to find a volunteer and test it. How did crucio work, even? Did it target nerves? Was it all in the brain? Did anybody know? "Is there a numbing charm?" Ashley probably had thought about this already, being so smart. |

She didn't trust that they would abide by the ethics is there were no laws. Otherwise, they could do whatever experiments they wanted, which was an awful idea. Does the ministry have a human subject protection office? Why do they teach first years offensive spells that would only work on each other? How is floo powder made and and why does it sound so sketchy? Why can't there be a normal year at this school? If you have two muggleborn parents, does that make you a pureblood? Why do all of the fountains in the wizarding world suck?" Ash. wanted. A N S W E R S. Fast. "Like either the fountains spit water at you, suck you in, or are just unbelievably tacky. Makes zero sense." |

Makes zero sense." Now how would Mamie know the answers to annnnny of these questions? She was twelve, and a Muggleborn, and did not go around reading for fun. Well, except the sports and entertainment sections of the newspaper. RIP Daily Prophet subscription. She gave the other second year an exaggerated shrug. They could ask an adult, but they'd have to be careful about which one. Mamie was partial to Kitridge or Aguilar. Schmoe might be okay to ask, since he would at least understand their thought process of looking for magical equivalents to handy muggle things. Recard...would probably scold them for being too curious. "I like the fountains," she said mildly. "They have personality." Fountains and broomsticks. Muggle things that wizards took and gave personalities. Trees, too. Well, she supposed the wizards hadn't given the trees personalities. Evolution did that. Was that the word? |

"They have an annoying personality. Most of them are alright though, except for the one in the ministry. It's a big statue with a gilded wizard in the middle and all the other stuff in the fountain is looking at it like it's the greatest thing ever." She made a face. Not only did it have an awful message of wizard superiority, but it also looked dumb. And gilded. While Ash could certainly afford to have a big gold statue of herself saving the world, she didn't want one. Because she had taste. Duh. "I am not a fan of gilded stuff. You?" It was like, Hello I am fancy and rich. Bow to my superiority because I have a statue that isn't even real gold. If you chopped its head off, gross stuff would show, just like it would if you chopped off my real head. Ash was certainly being non sequitur today. First it was healing, and now it was gilded stuff. |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sophia Svensson #556B2F Slytherin Fifth Year Hogwarts RPG Name: Eulalia Walles (#F48037) Hufflepuff Fourth Year | Constant Vigilance! O_O AWAKE! "You've been to the Ministry?!" Mamie was jealous. She'd thought they might have a field trip there someday or something, you know, to see their government in action. That no longer seemed likely, given they weren't even allowed to owl their families.
She nodded quietly. "I don't think...I don't think I like it either," she agreed. She did not have a strong opinion on this subject, but...it seemed like a waste of gold? Gold that could be spent on helping people, instead. Not that the Neo-Alliance seemed keen on helping anyone-- except themselves to the students' food. |

I think it's famous or something." And super ugly. "I don't think I want to go to the ministry. I want to be a streamer when I grow up. If I grow up. What do you want to do with your life, Mamie?" I want to be a streamer so I can have extra money to help people. And also for fun. |

Mamie wondered if the picture of the Ministry fountain had been in a book she was supposed to read. Or maybe a book she had read, and she just couldn't remember.
She was surprised Ashley wanted to be a streamer. That was a Muggle job, she thought. And what would she stream? Mamie didn't think she (Mamie) was interesting enough that anybody would want to watch her, but Ashley was much more interesting. "I...I don't know," she said after a minute of frantically trying to remember possible professions. Did she know what she wanted? Had she ever known? Mamie thought she had known what she wanted to be when she grew up, as a Muggle, but now she was at Hogwarts and there were so many more options! "Maybe play Quidditch?" She didn't have to get outstanding grades to play Quidditch. She did have to get better at flying, though...and that was hard without practice. |
