Once you've tickled the pear and turned the knob, the Hogwarts kitchen will be revealed to you. Located directly beneath the Great Hall, the kitchen is a high-ceilinged room with five identical tables to the ones in the dining room above. Unlike the room situated above however, heaped around the walls are large quantities of pots and pans. On one end of the room are shelves of plates and utensils, stoves, sinks, and a large brick fireplace.

Here numerous house-elves are working on the castle's next meal when they aren't tending to their other duties as employees of the school. The team of house-elves have specific assignments to accomplish inside the kitchen, whether it is to cook, wash the plates and cutlery, keep the pantry stocked, place more wood into the fire, or set the tables before everything is summoned to its exact replicas overhead. Though the house-elves are incredibly busy, they will surely serve you a snack ... if you aren't asking Algamus. Or you can, of course, make your own food. Just don't leave a mess behind!

OOC: Please do not role-play for the House-Elves.

Ash shrugged. "I have more. It's not like I'm going to stay in the same place twice, that would be dumb." AS IF she would go around saying things like 'If you want to ambush a muggleborn second year, check the...' No. "Ice cream is not THAT unhealthy." Plus, Ash lived by the belief that if you could quite possibly die tomorrow, it was fine to eat whatever you wanted today. As long as you exercised. Ash stepped into the kitchen, turning to fist bump Dahlia. Four points in total! She liked this teacher a lot more than Rosier. For one thing, he was morally better and qualified for his job, and for another, he had never pointed a wand at her throat and threatened to send her on a 'one way trip to the afterlife. Painfully.' So, that was basically all you needed to do to be a perfect teacher, right?

Dahlia wasn't worried about being well known by this Professor. He seemed nice so far. And if he did happen to mix her up with one of her siblings, well, it would be okay. As for hiding spots, there was quite a few on her list. None she was about to name. She even nodded her head in agreement with Ashley. Some secrets were meant to be kept.

Oh, gosh! That giggling pear was ADORABLE! Lia had to stifle her own giggles at hearing it. "Maybe buuuuuuuut I could always have strawberry ice cream with real strawberries in it. Then it is healthier. Win, win." She grinned sweetly up at the Professor. He wouldn't really agree with that, would he? Plus, she was only eleven. Ice cream came before almost everything. Not to mention with her level of energy she wasn't to worried about it.

Two points each for getting into the kitchen! Yes! A small was given towards Aguilar, this guy was really gaining points on her own list of good professors. Lia grinned, fist bumping Ash as she followed behind her into the kitchen. Whoa! It was huge in here!

Well, at least they knew that hiding in the same place more than once was less than ideal. Aguilar hoped they understood that directly insulting Rosier or the alliance members during these times was another example of dumb behaviour.

... He was tempted to take the house points back. "Ice cream is low in nutrients and high in calories. You have to promise that you will not eat ice cream, with or without real strawberries, more than once a week." He returned Delilah's sweet smile with a nod. If the children thought they could eat as much junk food as they wanted when they were away from their parents, they were wrong! Yes, Miss Fox, you must have a balanced diet even if you think you will die the next day. (Because what if, luckily, you don't die the next day, or the next month, or the next few decades, and end up with a lot of illnesses that even magic cannot treat?)

Stepping into the large kitchen, Aguilar looked around and greeted the house-elves performing their tasks. They seemed very busy, so he did not want to bother them by asking for a snack. Anyway, he found the food he was looking for without difficulty. "Anyone want a banana?" he asked, walking over to the fruits corner.

Ash shrugged. "I don't want ice cream anyway. I want blueberries." She dug around for a plastic thing of blueberries. And then she ate all of them in handfuls. BECAUSE BLUEBERRIES. "mmmm. Food tastes so good when nobody is claiming that you rotted it with magic and taking away 200 points. mmmmm." She smiled and leaned against the wall. "I love blueberries."

Almost gave an audible groan. Almost. Knew better then to do that and didn't comment on the unnecessary information about her most favorite dessert in the entire world. There wasn't much point in arguing with a Professor over the value and importance of ice cream... or the lack there of. "I can try." Another sweet smile. Eat loads of junk food while at home, her parents were aware of her high amount of energy and sugar intake. Her diet was very well balanced, if it was on her plate, chances were high that she would eat it. Except beets... those things she couldn't handle.

Lia gave a gentle smile towards the house-elves if any happened to look her way. The mention of blueberries and bananas caught her attention and she pulled her gaze back towards the Professor and Ash. "Yes, please." It wasn't anywhere close to ice cream but it would do.

Was it obvious that he was raised by strict parents who emphasised nutrition? They still wrote to him regularly with a list of things he should be doing or was doing wrong. The most important item in the past few years was that he had to get married soon. Of course, Camilo had not heard from them since the school term began. He never thought he would miss their nagging ... He tried to stop thinking about his parents as he took two bananas and passed one to Delilah. Ashley was eating healthy blueberries, which he silently approved of.

"Looks like you can make your own food here. Do you kids know how to cook?" He scanned the room once more as he peeled the banana and took a bite. Wait, what did Ashley just say? "Were you accused of rotting food and lost 200 house points?" Or was it just an oddly specific hypothetical situation?

Yes, it was quite obvious. Nutrition, blah blah blah, caloric intake, etcetera.

"My best friend, he taught me some cooking stuff. I don't do it for fun though. Mostly just for hunger purposes." Like when there was nobody to make her dinner but herself, and she had to make lots of sandwiches. Ash nodded. "Yep. That was me. I yelled at fake Trent, and then he yelled at me, and then I cried, and then went to the hospital wing and took a nap, and then I burned down a forest with a group of people, some of whom might have been prefects.. I blame the ghost." Why did she constantly feel the need to explain that she was possessed? It was pretty obvious. "And then I went back to the hospital wing." Obviously. "And that's pretty much how my life has gone so far." She ate some blueberries. Nom. Nom. Nom. "I really, really like blueberries."

They all had their issues. Dahlia ate too much ice cream. Mr. flying professor cared too much about rules. And Ash ran around unsupervised all of the time.

Dahlia accepted the banana with a soft smile and a quiet, 'Thank you'. Peeling the banana open she took her first bite. It wasn't anything close to a bowl of her favorite ice cream with all the toppings she had been craving but it was something. It took her mind off of everything else even if only for a few brief moments.

"Uh-huh," Lia nodded her head. "Well kind of. I can't cook large extravagant meals but I've cooked alongside my Papa and siblings lots of times." Cooking as a family was something fun that they all liked to do, especially when they were really little. TONS of messes had been made and lots of laughter.

Dahlia nearly choked on a bit of banana, her eyes going wide as Ash told them about what had taken place last term. She had heard some of this their first night in the common room but more details were being given this time around. With a quiet cough and wide eyes, she managed to swallow the chewed up banana without having to spit anything out. "That sounds really terrible... I'm glad you're okay now and everyone knows that it really wasn't any of your fault." Firmly believes what Ash had said. If a ghost had made her do it, then she couldn't be at fault.

Camilo was curious if they could cook because, well, he couldn't. Being in this school kitchen made him think that it would have been nice if he made some easy meals for his friends and himself while he was a student at Castelobruxo. He nodded when the girls both said that they knew how to cook. Good for them!

He finished his banana as Ashley explained the events of the previous term. Oh, he was aware of the ghost possession and subsequent burning of the forbidden forest, but had not heard that there was rotten food involved and that Ravenclaw lost 200 points. The latter was what he was really surprised about, because that was a LOT of points to take away. Only made sense if it was done by the leader of a cult pretending to be headmaster. So Camilo's expression was not shocked like Dahlia's, but rather neutral as he pieced the story together. "I agree with Miss Donovan, and I'd also like to say to both of you that you could ... look forward to life improving. Perhaps not dramatically, but little by little. Y'know, like learning some cool flying tricks, having blueberry muffins or strawberry ice cream for dessert, making new friends. If you focus on creating small good things for yourself everyday, one day you'll look back and say - my life at Hogwarts was crazy, but I made the most out of it."

... and now he was officially the new teacher who makes awkward sappy speeches in the kitchen. "I'd better get going now that I've had my mid-afternoon snack. It was nice talking to you, ladies." With a smile, he ~~stole~~ took an extra bowl of fruits and left the kitchen.

Ash shrugged. "It's not the worst thing that's happened to me. Plus it was funny, because everyone was on my side anyway." HA. Take that, fake Trent. "Anyway, once I.. make it through this year, my life can only get better." IF she made it through this year. When she had already hit rock bottom, the only way to go was up. SHe listened to the speech and sneakily took like 3 cartons of blueberries. MINE NOW. Yes, Ash was looking forward to her life improving. "See all of you later. Nice talking." And then she left with the blueberries.

Not the worst thing that has happened to her? Lia looked at Ashley for a long moment as she chewed up another bite of her banana. Was her housemate speaking about this term or something else all together? There really was noway in knowing, without asking and now wasn't the time nor place for more questions.

"I plan on it, Sir. I have a lot of family here at the moment too, so we can help each other... and I know I'll make some friends too." One way or another they all would get through this year. All she had to do was lay low and take it one day at a time.

Finishing the last bit of her banana, Dahlia dropped the peel into the trash bin. She waved at both Aguilar and Ash as they left the kitchen ahead of her. It was time for her to get going too. With no other reason to remain in the kitchen, she turned on her heels and headed out. Maybe she would go find one of her siblings now.

Quinn was very excited today. He had gotten Atlas to agree to a little baking lesson—it had been ages since he'd baked something, and doing it with a friend was the icing on the cake, so to speak. Quinn was going to bake a cake for Eden on her birthday, but... well, that hadn't turned out to be such a great day. Quinn seemed to be having a lot of unsavory experiences with people lately, but he was grateful that Atlas still had yet to disappoint him.

Quinn had already gotten lost down in the dungeons a couple times, but he knew his way to the kitchens pretty well now. Especially after the slug incident, he wasn't taking any detours. He tickled the pear on the painting to get into the kitchens, which he still felt was rather weird, and then started rummaging through the pantries and fridges. He still wasn't sure what he wanted to bake with Atlas, so he just pulled out some of the basics—eggs, milk, flour, cocoa powder, salt, sugar—since he'd probably be using all of them to some extent. Maybe he would ask Atlas what they should bake?

It was not something that he did on the regular but he had made his fair share of cookies over the years while acting the sous chef for someone else. There was a pleasantness with it all and it had to do with the accuracy in its methodology that produced consistent results once you had the formula down. It was not the most, er, picturesque way to think about baking...but it was how the Gryffindor tended to.

He was also well aware that it was an art too but, well, Atlas could draw stick figures and that was about the extend of his artistic abilities.

Running just a little late because he could not find his left shoe in the organized chaos that was his section of the dormitory, the blonde came hustling into the kitchen and made his way over to Quinn who was remarkably easy to spot considering the rest of their company were a bunch of house elves.

"Hey," he greeted with a small smile and even smaller wave.

Quinn really didn't have a preference, and he had a couple of the basic recipes memorized—he baked with his Gram almost every time he went to her house, so he was pretty familiar with everything.

"Oh...um..." Pausing to consider, tongue sticking out the corner of his lip with a tight curl, Atlas gave the kitchen a look over for inspiration. He really did not have a preference but did know that cupcakes and cake required a bit of decorating where as cookies did not always and brownies were a never. Plus...brownies were all chocolate and he could use a deep fix of that right now. "Brownies? I think." He paused again for a couple of nods. "And...I figure we could use this time to practice some of our Charms work too. Levitation and Summoning Charms, specifically." Maybe a bit of Locomotor too but would get to that later. "An unnecessary display of magical ability while doing this would probably be for the best."

Hopefully Quinn caught the subtext there.

Quinn listened to what Atlas was saying, not catching on at first, but getting it after a couple seconds. He inhaled with understanding. "Oh... yeah, you're probably right..." Quinn looked around, thinking about what he could do with magic. He pulled out his wand.

"Uh... Accio... mixing bowl!"

Maybe he wasn't as specific as he could've been? Or maybe he was just overexcited? Either way, many mixing bowls flew out of cupboards towards the boys. Quinn let out a cry and hit the floor as they flew, and the bowls—which were, thankfully, metal—hit the wall and floor behind him with a loud clatter.

While he had no real personal attachment to brownies, although Unchiule Andrei was a refined pâtissier by hobby, there was something that felt more comforting about brownies to the Gryffindor. Sure, there wasn't a right or wrong answer to what Quinn had asked of him ... but Atlas couldn't help but feel like he had picked the right answer anyway.

So his playful shoulder shrug was paired with a sheepish kind of smile as he patted his robes to try and remember which pocket on his robes he had slipped his wand and holster into. He really should have settled on a spot by now but that was just the way the cookie crumbled.

And then it was like they were playing a game of dodge ball. Which, to be honest, was KIND of a fun concept...just maybe with something like marshmallows and not metal mixing bowls. "WOAH!" Thankfully by this point Atlas had rediscovered which pocket he had utilized and had his wand in hand. "Protego!" A little, thin, Shield Charm appeared around the blonde just in time for a couple of bowls to strike it and ricochet in different directions. One towards the sink. Another towards a cupboard with a CLANG against the wood. Another BOIKING the charm and then falling with a dull CLING to the floor and rolling away. Once it seemed like the bowls were done reacting to the Ravenclaw's magic, Atlas took a breath before bursting into a fit of laughter. So much so that he had to hold his stomach.

Quinn looked up from the floor once the clattering stopped, then slowly stood up. Many mixing bowls littered the floor and counters around them—this could be a hassle to pick up—but, when Atlas started laughing, so did he; it was small and awkward at first since this was his fault, after all, but they grew until he was laughing just as much as Atlas was. He put a hand on the edge of the counter to steady himself as he laughed, wiping a tear that had formed from his eye.

After the laughing had died down, he looked around at the chaos he had caused. "Oh, jeez.... maybe I shouldn't be using Accio for right now, huh?" He picked up one of the bowls that had landed on the counter to be the one they would use to make the batter and set it next to the ingredients, then set about to picking up the rest of the bowls. "That... was not my finest moment. But at least we had a good laugh." Quinn couldn't remember the last time he'd laughed like that. Definitely before this whole horrible term started, at least. His smile faltered a bit at that thought.

Wiping his eyes, surprised at the moisture clinging there from all the intense laughter, Atlas looked over at his friend and did not even realize that all the tension that had been in his shoulders ever since the start of term feast was...mostly gone. "At least you know that it's in your arsenal of spells you can cast...and pretty reliably too." It HAD worked, after all. And there would likely be an instance or several were summoning everything of one item would come in handy. "Just have to work on intent next. At least that's what I figure a professor would suggest." His own shield charm down as well, the Gryffindor moved to pick up the bowls that had bounced off his spell and set them on the counter opposite where they were. "Gave me a chance to test out my reflexes and Shield Charm too."

He might be bragging a bit. There was very little he felt like he could brag about so far but he had felt pretty darn impressed with himself just now.

"What else do we need?" he asked as he pulled open a drawer and looked through it. "Whisk? Spatula?"

Atlas was pretty sharp with his reflex, wasn't he? He was probably good at dueling magic—better than Quinn was, at least. It brought back his thoughts for training; he still had his list of spells he thought were useful hidden away in his things, but he hadn't brought up the idea to... well, anyone, yet. It was dangerous to even think of, but.... Quinn didn't wanna just sit around defenselessly. But the danger also made Atlas—and, in turn, Aries—the last people he wanted to bring it up to, given the situation with their dad. "Yeah, you were good with that Shield Charm. I think it was probably better that I had just ducked, though—my reflexes are much worse," he chuckled awkwardly.

"Uh, the whisk, definitely. I need to grab some oil, baking powder, vanilla extract, butter, measuring cups—I can put back the milk, though—and then anything you wanna add into the brownies. And if we add stuff in, I'll need the spatula to fold them into the batter." He put the milk back where he found it and went on a hunt through the pantries for the supplies he was still missing. "Do you have anything you really wanna put into the brownies?" he asked while he rooted around. "Chocolate chips, marshmallows, nuts..?"

Quinn really seemed worked up over the whole mixing bowl thing, something Atlas couldn't really understand because...well...maybe because he had created worse messes with Aries. THESE bowls had been empty, after all. "Live and learn," he smiled with another light shrug of the shoulders while he dug around the drawers for a whisk and spatula. Some of these spoons were SO big and seemed so entirely unnecessary. He was sure Unchiule Andrei would beg to differ about that. Atlas really missed the Romanian's pastries. What if he and Almost-Auntie Vivian had set a wedding date? What if they were missing all that too?

Before he could get too far down the 'what if' spiral, Quinn was complimenting the Gryffindor's Shield Charm and...weeeeeell...Atlas' ears were always burning for praise. "Those can improve with training. Reflexes. Mum also says eating spinach and eggs helps improve them too but I feel like that was just a lie to get Aries and myself to eat our spinach scramble." Atlas was not a big fan of eggs and even less a fan of spinach.

Finally finding a whisk AND spatula - woo hoo, 50 points to Gryffindor - he turned back towards his friend. "Folding?" Folding meant one thing and one thing only to Atlas. "But it's...hardly a consistency to fold...batter I mean...isn't it too liquidy?" How did you make creases??? But then he had a think about what to add in. "...peanut butter?"

He really couldn't just put it off anymore, huh?

"Y-yeah... I agree with you about the eggs," he forced out, trying to sound jovial, "but spinach can be pretty good depending on how it's prepared. I usually don't mind it much, at least." Eating your vegetables was very important—Gram said so. She made the best food, so he believed her.

Quinn giggled at his friend's confusion and peeked his head around the pantry door to give him a look. "No, silly, this isn't origami. When you fold something into batter, you sort of..." he made a motion with his hands as if he was doing it, "...use the spatula to bring batter from the bottom of the bowl up and over whatever you're mixing into it, and then you keep doing that until it's all mixed in good. It's the same concept as folding paper—it's putting batter on top of itself, but it's to mix other stuff into it. It helps get it all spread through evenly; it sucks if you have one side of a brownie chock full of stuff but then the other has nothing in it, you know?" he went back to rooting around in the pantry.

Peanut butter..? He had never put anything that wasn't solid into brownies—he didn't know how well that would work out, or what the proper way to go about it was. But, he had seen some of these at the store before... he brought the rest of the necessities over to the counter along with the substitute—peanut butter chips. He held up the bag of them. "Will these work? It's just peanut butter in chocolate chip form."

It might please this Gryffindor to know he was actually on point with something. He felt like he was mostly several blocks away from the point and practically all times this term.

Why did it seem perfectly fitting that Quinn would be the sort to defend the integrity of spinach? It was green and soggy and Atlas could ALWAYS tell when mum had tried to blend it up in something to hide it. There was a nasty grainy quality to it. Grainy and stringy. Basically all this was making his nose wrinkle as he looked back at the Ravenclaw with deep doubt knotted into his brow. "Name ONE way where spinach doesn't taste like feet or socks left to marinade in tap water for three days." JUST sayin'.

But do go on, Quinn. Try and convince him that soggy socks could be fine cuisine.

...what? Atlas was watching his friend's hands as he demonstrated what was supposed to happen with the spatula and batter, but he was having a hard time visualizing how batter was supposed to fold. He just could not think of anything other than paper and batter did NOT do that. "So...is mix in and fold in the same instruction then?" Baking made no sense. Wasn't baking supposed to be precise? What was this dark magic?

Leaning over a bit, Atlas examined the bag and then poured a small handful of these mysterious peanut butter chips. "Hmmm..." he hummed, pushing them around in his palm a little. "Let me see." And into the mouth they went like a catapault. He first allowed them to melt on his tongue before smacking his lips a bit, mostly for show, and soon was nodding. "Yes. This will work."

....and one more handful. This time a heartier one. And down the hatch those went as well.

Quinn stuck his lip out. "Well, it's not the healthiest way, but my favorite way is definitely spinach dip. It's cheesy and stuff, so you would probably be able to barely taste the, er, sock-in-tap-water taste you're talking about. But I don't think spinach tastes that bad either way. I mean, it's not great, but it's not terrible." Quinn had grown up eating his greens—a lot of people at school used to think that was weird. They had other things about him that they thought were more pertinently weird, so he didn't hear much talk about it. But he thought vegetables could be pretty good, depending on how they're prepared. Almost all of them, really.

Quinn thought about it. "Well, basically, yes. Folding is a way of mixing. But mixing would just be..." he made the typical stirring motion with his hands, "...but that wouldn't get it as evenly mixed through as folding," he said, mimicking the motion again. He waved his hand dismissively. "Eh, you'll see when we get there."

Quinn giggled at Atlas's theatrics. The peanut butter chips tasted, unsurprisingly, like peanut butter, so he figured they would work. He bumped Atlas with his shoulder. "I'm glad you approve. Okay, so..." he turned towards all the ingredients and tools they'd brought out. "Now, we make the batter!" he clapped his hands together. Let's see, where to start... Quinn went for the cocoa powder and started scooping some out with a measuring spoon he found. "Atlas, could you pour out half a cup of that canola oil, please?" he said, gesturing to the measuring cup. Once he was done with the cocoa powder, he added a pinch of salt and then started on the sugar.
