In a rather rare change of schedule, the Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson does not take place at 8 am sharp. Today, with snow covering the grounds and a stiff wind coming along the mountain side, you find yourself walking out to the grounds. It's high noon--or near enough. After lunch, you've been instructed to change into comfortable clothing then meet the Headmaster in the open area between the lake and the wooden bridge.
Step lively, there is a lot to cover.
There are no chairs, there are no seats. There are no signs of comfort or anything that could give away the day's lesson. What IS there is a conjured chalkboard with the words:
Quote:
As usual, avoid the incessant chatter and let's all try to at least pretend you want to remain alive. I'm done with the boundary testing and would like to think you are, too.
That goes double for:
Kinsay James
Phoebe James
Bernadette Grantham Ashley Fox
Eden Tilly
Headmaster Rosier stands with his hands clasped behind his back and an unimpressed look upon his face. He wouldn't hold his breath for the day's lesson, but for their sake they would fall in line.
OOC: Welcome to the first DADA lesson!! Don't forget to read the classroom rules before posting. I'll have the first question up in 24-28 hours
If Mamie hadn't been Mamie, she would have been annoyed with Aboli for telling her what she did or didn't think. But she was Mamie, so she didn't mind. Other people's brains doing the heavy lifting worked JUST GREAT for her. She was more annoyed at Minjae who didn't want them to do anything to the rat to make it stay away from the cheese.
And now they had an essay?! Due today?!? Mamie deflated. She really wished they'd have just transfigured the rat into a goblet right away, instead of talking so much about what to do. Ethics and all that, blah blah, but Rosier didn't have ethics so...they should've just transfigured it. First suggestion. Mamie's essay topic? Why you shouldn't overthink assignments. Thinking was bad. She probably couldn't come up with twenty five inches on the topic, but...well, if she wrote the essay as a stream of consciousness, it would both prove her point and go faster. And then Rosier would have to read it, which she was sure would be a tough exercise.
She gathered with the group as requested, sticking close to Aboli because...protection. She thought a moment on the question, then raised her hand. "Build a wall," she said. "Either an actual wall, or a magical wall."
Well, at least she had kept despereaux away from the cheese. "Good rat. Follow me if you like living." But now the activity was over, and she probably had to write an essay about how much she sucked and couldn't do anything quickly. Was she really being that slow? She didn't think so. But she would write one anyway just in case, because she was a muggleborn and the bar was higher. Oooh, and back to the topic or hurting muggles, which had zero to do with DEFENSE AGAINST the dark arts. "You could just kill any muggles who come near and hide the bodies. Then all the other muggles will assume it's a circle of death or something, and they will stay away. Except for the stupid ones who will come and get murdered." Since he wanted to be straightforward and not play mind games.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Time was up? Awww what a bummer! He had SO wanted to torture an innocent little rat!
Hashtag sarcasm.
Minjae didn't care what Mamie, Irithel and Aboli thought of him he was just glad that it was over. He didn't even care about the essay they had to write until the Headmaster said he wanted it by dinner. He immediately felt guilty because he knew he was the reason they had to write it.
Not daring to look at his group, Minjae lowered his gaze, his ears turning red as he did so. He was about to say sorry when they were called over.
‘Forcing muggles’ Minjae wanted to roll his eyes so badly but of course he didn’t, he didn’t want to die over an eye roll. Did that guy never get tired of himself? It must hurt to have your brain in constant negativity all day long. Had he ever tried seeing a psychiatrist? tried Yoga? Meditation? Any kind of sport was good for the brain.
”There is the Muggle-repelling charm” he said after raising his hand.

Okay well, neither of those ultimatatums actually applied to Bernadette Grantham. She'd not only directed the other members of her team, but she'd thought of more than one way to keep the rat from the cheese. And one of those ways could have resulted in the death of the rat but the salvation of the cheese. Maybe. She hadn't had the chance to see if her rat knew how to swim like the other rats she'd encountered in her lifetime. So. No. She wouldn’t be writing no damn 25-inch-essay about being a failure. SHE WOULDN’T. HE WASN'T HER FATHER AND HE COULDN'T MAKE HER.
Stubbornly setting her jaw, but still not so stubborn that she couldn't resist answering, she said, "Hide... whatever it is in plain sight. They look right past magic anyway. A basic disillusionment charm can probably work, depending on the size of the thing..."
Hang on, was this going to be more about underage magic and the statute of secrecy, or...?

Eden would be snagging her groupmates after class and seeing if they were writing essays - or rather trying to convince them not to. She really didn't feel like inventing a page of codswallop about how slow she was for Rosier to mark a fat T on.
Sigh. Time for the muggle hating. Eden raised her hand and spoke without any emotion.
"We could poison their water supply, burn their crops, and deliver a plague onto their houses. Then they'd just be gone."
Once the rat was in the maze and on its way, Nem kind of checked out. They weren't planning on zapping the thing, only waiting to see if it reached the cursed area of the maze. That had been a plus of getting the youngest to try the charm, though if anyone asked, they were simply sparing her from having to do any rat-zapping. "She's doing great," Nem agreed. Maybe not perfect, but well enough to keep it safe for those few minutes. Boring.
All too soon it was over, but Nem lingered for just a moment by the maze. They eyed the rat, then the cheese, and the floor of the maze around it, and then the rat once more. Had the spell even worked? They momentarily made to grab the rat, or to just touch the cursed floor of the maze themselves to see for sure, but then the thought passed. Of course it had worked, why wouldn't it? And the Big Man was not a Patient Man, so Nem just went back to the group and lingered, once again, on the margins.
"I hear Bombarda works wonders," they supplied matter-of-factly. Everyone remembered that first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson this term, surely. Some might see Nem was simply drawing on previous learning. Maybe even giving a sarcastic answer... or a serious one. Really depended on perspective, and on what a person wanted to hear. Nem didn't think it was an answer all that different from those they'd been giving all term, but was also caring less and less about consistency with every passing moment. "If you don't get them with it, you can hit the perimeter of the area they're intruding on and they'll back off." Short term, at least. But the specification had been for an urgent measure.

Just when Heath thought he might actually succeed at this activity, Rosier called time, and not only that but he was making them write an essay. Although he showed no outward sign of emotion, inside he was seething. Essays themselves didn’t bother him - he was well used to writing them by now - nor did the fact that it was due before dinner. It was the subject of the essay that frustrated him! See, this was one of the many reasons he hated group work! Too much bantering back and forth to get anything done. If working alone was an option, he would’ve stood a better chance at stopping the rat! Did Rosier know that when he gave the assignment? Was that why he made it a group activity… to set them up for failure? Nothing would surprise him at this point.
He kept his eyes ahead, refusing to look at the other members of his group, lest he see blame reflected there. For once, he was glad for the question; it gave him something to think about besides his failure. He thought for a minute (only a minute, as he wouldn’t want to answer ToO sLOWLy), mentally combing through all he knew about magical barriers and methods of concealment. As soon as an idea occurred to him, he raised his hand. “If it’s a location that you want them to stay away from, you can make it Unplottable,” he said.

Well, their rat hadn’t gotten to the cheese yet though it was certainly trying. Did that mean her group barely got anywhere with the task or they had succeeded? Claudine was a little baffled. Whatever. She’d figure that out later. For now, there was that question to consider. As answers poured in, the girl could not help but think that some of the students were trying very much to keep said answers harsh. Of course, they couldn’t be blamed; they all wanted to survive.
Up went a hand. “Booby traps. Deadly booby traps could be set up in advance. But if you’re trying to keep the Muggle away at the immediate moment, and there are no traps around, Incarcerous could be helpful.’’

Apollo dreaded defense class more than anything this term. At least he wasn't one of the targeted students for incessant chatter, but the fact that three of his fellow Gryffindors were on the list had the first year still feeling chills whenever class time happened. Discussion on control too, Apollo had to wonder if this was dark arts rather than defense against it, as Rosier didn't seem to care in casually tossing unforgivables around like they were candy. Should the first year have been surprised? Probably not, but it still made his hairs stand on edge.
This activity too with a rat was a bit much too, but he supposed it could have been worse. Rosier could have used one of the muggleborns to poison instead.
Moving on though to keeping muggles away from something ... urgently. The danger ahead sign that Kinsay suggested seemed okay at first, but honestly, Apollo knew it wouldn't work. Many muggles were stupid and thrived on heading towards dangerous things and exploring haunted areas. He doubted very much that a sign declaring danger would do much good. Bernie had a good idea with the disillusionment charm and one that would ensure safety as well, which was something that Rosier probably didn't care about.
"Shock devices. Like with animals, you can get shock collars that shock them if they try to leave your yard. You can get something that shocks muggles who come close. Bet they'd run the opposite direction faster than you can say muggle."
There. He was participating.

Merlin's beard, essays? By dinner??
Ivy wasn't sure if her group qualified for the second part, but she also obviously wasn't going to ask either. The Not!Headmaster would probably just make them do it anyway and then probably give them a second essay to do for asking at all. So...guess that meant she was going to have to find time to get that done after this class? Merlin.
No time to dwell though, because they were on to the next question.
She raised her hand. "You could use a Stunning Spell to knock them out. Then you could easily do whatever you need to do to get them away from there." Like simply moving them nicely somewhere else. Or insert whatever mean and cruel thing he would do here.

Kinsay's face dropped when the Headmaster called an end to the activity. "Do you think we have to write an essay?" She whispered, looking back and forth between the older girls. If they did, it'd be all Kinsays fault. She felt all the guilt.
Returning her attention back to the Headmaster, Kizzy walked over to join the group hesitantly. Even though Headmaster Rosier didn't seem to appreciate her answer the first time, asking nicely could ALSO work in urgent situations. She wasn't going to say that though because she didn't want to be asked about being dropped on her head.
So she paused thoughtfully, before raising her hand. "You could put up a really big sign that says 'Danger Ahead!'" Kinsay would keep away from a sign like that. Most people liked to stay away from dangerous things.
Well....it wasn't the stupidest thing James had every said, he would concede to that. Lucien nodded once, not entirely dismissive.
"Yes, sometimes warning ahead can do the job. The problem comes only when you have the thrill seekers or those who aren't deterred by the threat of danger. Take for instance, someone who is looking for their loved one. Many would brave the warning."
Himself included depending on who went missing.

Muggles couldn't get on, around or beneath that, no matter how much technology they chose to build.

The ultimate end was not to eradicate muggles. Some would need to remain.

"Yes." Confirmed. "Stunning them also eliminates the likelihood of protest or further defiance." When there was work to be done, the last thing anyone needed was a bunch of overly determined muggles who would not do as they were told.
"It's better with them unconscious for the time."
And now it was time for the main event. "Come with me." Lucien led the group of students out to the front gate. From there, he sent up red sparks from his wand then waited patiently. Within five minutes, some of his followers came along, nudging some people who had been blindfolded with their hands tied behind their backs.
They could be muggles, they could be wizards, they could be real, they could be fake--real, they were real. This was real life, they had real missions to accomplish and real spells to try out. This was not merely a drill.
"While there were a few good answers, the one we'll be focusing on is the muggle repelling charm that Yoon mentioned. To cast this spell, you simply raise your wand and say the incantation 'Repello Muggletum'. The effects of this charm are pretty straight forward. It keeps muggles away from whatever area you're wanting to keep them away from. They'll suddenly remember some urgent matter or the other and go the other way." Easy and painless for all the bleeding hearts that still existed amongst the students.
"I've borrowed these muggles." And would decide what to do with them after. "Your job is to choose an area of the castle or the grounds and defend against the muggles. Keep them away from it. Or, you can follow them to ensure they don't get into trouble. Should you find the charm ineffective--or if you'd prefer to use another method mentioned by one of your classmates, you're free to. Just get it done. Now, they don't know where they are and will likely be looking for exits. This means they may get into dangerous places without even meaning to. Better stop them. Work in groups, or go hunting them alone." He didn't care. "Some of you may want to reevaluate who you work with if you have any intention of getting this done at all."
What were they waiting for? The muggles were getting away.
OOC: Time for the main activity! I'll be playing the MUGGLES! so please do NOT RP their reactions, decisions or outcomes. You may cast the spell on the areas please leave the reactions to me. I will post in several threads around the school. At the end, please post here again linking to any posts you make while muggle hunting. This class will end on February 20, 2021

Once the blindfolds and ropes had been removed, the muggles took a moment to survey their surroundings. As far as they could see, they were at a dead end with a large gaping hole (an illusion charm placed on the gate to prevent them trying to access it). That meant they needed to go the other way.
"Quickly!" One yelled.
With much panic and little organisation, the muggles took off in several directions. Some went toward the creature sanctuary, some toward the castle, some further onto the grounds.
One way had to lead out, then they would go find the others and escape together.
It had been a strange day thus far, but there was no time to give it much thought. What they had seen....they needed to get away.

Think we’d better write one just to be safe...” And no, Cece wasn’t looking forward to this homework. Just the thought of finishing an essay by dinner made her want to wilt, but she nudged Kinsay instead, offering a small smile. ”No biggy, though. We’ll have an session in the common room.” She’d bring the snacks. Snacks always helped.
Annnd they were moving on. Before she’d had a chance to answer. Which actually wasn’t such a bad thing now that she thought about it. Some of the suggestions given were enough to make her stomach turn and she was pretty afraid to see what Rosier had in store for them next, but she followed him anyway.
.........Muggles. He’d kidnapped muggles. Someone’s mum, maybe. Someone’s big brother. Maybe an aunt. Maybe a granddad. It made her sad. It also made her scared. Even if he wasn’t forcing them to hurt these innocent people, nothing was stopping him from doing it after the lesson and that made her feel sick. She didn’t have long to dwell on it, though. The muggles were already on the move and there was a LOT that could get them into trouble.
”I’m headed for the whomping willow.” In case anyone wanted to join her. She didn’t want any of these muggles getting caught there. After a moments pause, she took off at a run to try and get there first.
Repello Muggletum. Mamie repeated the incantation of the spell in her head. That seemed very practical, even if one wasn't a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad man like Headmaster Rosier. For keeping Muggles away from, say, dangerous magical creatures or big magical schools.
It would be hard to practice though--no? They had Muggles? Here? Mamie stared at the blindfolded folks. The Muggles. She was trying to still listen to Rosier, really trying, by she just heard the phrase "I've borrowed these muggles" repeating in her head. You couldn't borrow people. You borrowed an egg. Or a sweater. People were not things, you could only borrow things.
She jolted back into focus when the Muggles started running away, though. Dangerous places? The whomping willow! She sprinted off after them without thinking, drawing her wand as she went. She had to protect the Muggles! From themselves and from Rosier. She didn't even process there was another student already heading that way
"Because disappearances are scarier than bodies." You don't know what got them. ohhhhh, nooooo. NO! Real people. Who she needed to take care of. And... they were running. What is one of them was her family? Or her best friend? She practiced the incantation quickly under her breath before sprinting after the muggles heading towards the Whomping Willow. Notadrillnotadrillnotadrill... If there was anytime she needed to be good at magic, it was now. Right now. Some of these people would die if she couldn't get them out.
Kale felt something terrible crawl up his chest, climbing his ribs like a ladder, when Rosier revealed the Muggles he had kidnapped. All term he and his peers had played nice or at least compliant with the Alliance in the hopes that what?? It wouldn't end up here??? Merlin. Kale felt so stupid. Of course it was always going to escalate to them using their magic on innocent muggles. Rosier had been priming them all term.
Gosh. All of them had blindly paved the way for these events by staying quiet outta fear or something else that didn't matter now. Cuz real people were in danger. And Rosier was standing around like they were less than the dirt on his shoes.
"This is barbaric," Kale heard himself say loudly. The Muggles were scattering, running every which way, and Rosier had as good as suggested they could use whatever spells they liked to contain them. Like some kind of infectious outbreak.
He was spitting mad. Red. Furious. And entirely over this whole Alliance business.
And so, like most of the term thus far, Kale Trent needed a firm hand to remove him from going sideways at Rosier. The fifth year had been playing a losing game for months now and hadn't scored a single victory against the actual worst human alive.

Kale Alexander Trent was protesting.
Shocking.
It was so far outside of left field. Lucien would never have seen it coming. Oh Merlin, whatever would he do now that some kid he cared pellets for was calling his lesson barbaric?
Well, he supposed he'd have to go back to his office and have himself a good cry to make himself feel better. Lucien yawned, loudly; an indication of his current level of interest in what the boy had to say. He hadn't learned, had he? This...this was all still a game, wasn't it?
Well, fine.
"Avada Kedavra." A flash of green light burst forth, but it was not aimed at the boy. Rather, it was aimed at one of the bumbling muggles who'd not gotten away fast enough. He turned back to Kale.
"That one was on you. I've explained a million times how this will work and there are PLENTY more where that one came from." So start running.

Edward Smith had been a good man; a father, a brother, an uncle--and most recently had been promoted within his little company. It wasn't much, and things were sometimes tight but they were starting to look up. Until he was taken to this strange place of horrors.
Good ole' Ed didn't get far before he was engulfed in a bright flash of green.
The man toppled to the ground where he lay motionless. The look of horror remained etched on his face, though he was now gone.

This was...real.
This wasn't just theoretical or simple practice with dummies. These were real people. And while it was...a "relief," if that was the right word, that they were using a more harmless spell like the Muggle Repelling Charm as opposed to something like Bombarda, these people would still be scared. They'd been kidnapped. And who knew what would happen to them when the lesson was over?
But time was of the essence because they could also get hurt now from so many things. Like from the creatures, since a group of them were heading in that direction. Merlin's-
Kale.
Merlin's beard, she was NOT reliving the earlier lessons on top of worrying about these Muggles. She refused. She-
.........Oh.
That was...a Killing Curse. On a Muggle. They were on the ground. They were...
Rosier's words fortunately jolted her out of her frozen state. That, and the knowledge that others might meet the same fate if she didn't hurry.
Don't think. Just go. Now.
"K- Kale," she said, her voice trembling a little, grabbing his hand, "come help me get them away from the creature sanctuary. Please."

Kale felt his heart as good as stop when he heard the unforgivable tossed out into the panicked crowd of Muggles. The green light humbled the unsuspecting man and he fell to the ground like a doll with its strings cut. Kale watched on hopelessly as the scream that had lodged itself in his throat drowned silently.
He’d killed someone. Rosier had killed someone.
And it was all Kale’s fault.
His mouth opened and closed searching for the words, any words, but none came to find him. Heck, he might never speak again. Look what it had done. Look what he had done.
Tears sprung to his eyes as he watched the lifeless form of that poor Muggle man. Certainly Rosier was saying something smug but Kale couldn’t hear him. It was like all of his senses save sight, which felt forever singled on the dead man, disappeared. What had he done? What. Had. He. Done?
When Ivy pulled him away, he didn’t resist. He didn’t know how. He was still locked on the moment where everything had gone so horribly wrong. Wherever she went, Kale would follow. Wordless. And totally lost.

Ok so...Adam KNEW what this whole Neo-Alliance thing really wanted. In the back of his mind, he always knew what the end goal was - kill muggles. It was kind of common sense that this was where everything would be heading eventually. Yes, so many terrible things had already happened - but no one had died.
It had all been an easy fact to ignore - until now.
Rosier had just killed someone. It wasn't just some dummy in the classroom - that was a real PERSON. With a family, like his own. With friends. He probably had pets too! And now it was all gone - and he probably didn't even understand why, because he was a muggle. He had no idea why he was here, or what was happening, and people around him didn't know either. There had just been a green light, and now he was dead.
There was a literal dead body in front of him. And Adam's tiny brain broke.
He let out a loud, high pitched SCREAM thanks puberty and...he stopped moving. He just stood there and stared at the body. He couldn't take his eyes off of it. He couldn't stop thinking about everything this meant - how would they let his family know? Was Rosier going to kill MORE muggles? Was HE going to have to start killing now to save himself? Had it hurt? What if he had been just a few feet the other direction? Would someone else have been hit besides him?
His brain was on overdrive - even for Adam.

Nem had to admit they were curious, at least at the point when the class reached the gates, and some prisoners were ushered in. So what were they...
The Big Man had said about keeping muggles away from an area, which did imply humane methods, so it made no sense to hope for more than that. All the same, Nem was deeply disappointed when it was confirmed they were just sticking with the Muggle-Repelling Charm. Sure, the Big Man had mentioned using other methods, but was it really time to totally out themselves in front of everyone? ... Maybe. They'd play it by ear.
One thing Nem knew was that they were splitting off and taking this activity solo, so as to not be held back by the rest of these dunces. They had just prepared to start the pursuit, when, speaking of dunces: Kale Trent.
Naturally, Nem hung back to watch the fireworks, and this time they were not disappointed.
There it was, that unmistakable burst of green light, which Nem anticipated only a second before it came, once they'd heard that first syllable. The body slumping to the floor with the heavy finality of death, alive and thinking and alert one second, gone the next. A 'who' to a 'what'. Snuffed out in a moment. Pretty neat.
More than enough, too. At least in one respect.
Aware that the Big Man was probably not at his peppiest, Nem diverted just a moment to go look at the corpse on the ground all the same, drinking in the sight with an almost impossibly empty stare. They even started to crouch down and really study its face - just to see, you know? - but a nearby scream pulled them from their thoughts. Right. Lesson.
With a glance towards the Big Man, and a little glint of something in their eye, Nem turned reluctantly away from the cadaver and stalked away in the vague direction that some of the muggles had gone. Impassive once more, they took the Luck kid firmly by the arm and tugged him along with them. "Come on. Now."
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
He had hit the nail on the head? A COMPLIMENT ?!
This time not only his ears turned red but his whole face did and he hated his own reaction. He hated it because he realized that he felt good . Apparently it did not matter if you were a friendly professor or the evilest evil ever, Minjae Yoon took any compliment he could get.
He followed the rest of the group as they walked to the front gate. He watched in both anticipation and fear as the man send up red sparks and then caught his gasp of horror just in time upon seeing the blindfolded and tied up humans approaching. This sight was a clear reminder to him what kind of a scumbag this man was.
Borrowed these muggles? BORROWED . This was kidnapping plain and simple! what was going to happen to them after their ‘activity’? Was he going to kill them? Wipe their memories? There were so many questions going through his mind that he continued to stand still until he heard Kale’s voice.
Barbaric. YES, Minjae 100% agreed with him! Until he watched that dreadful green light moving through the air and hit one of the muggles. The Hufflepuff GASPED in horror , his hand going to his mouth and his eyes teared up. He looked over at Rosier for a moment wondering what he would look like after killing someone and he looked so calm? HOW COULD HE BE SO CALM?!
AND HOW COULD NEM CASUALLY STUDY THE DEAD MAN?!
merlin's beard he was going to get a heart-attack himself.
Best not to think about it. Minjae knew he had to get out of here as quickly as possible to safe get rid of the muggles running around the castle. Not caring about teams, the seventh year took out his wand and ran .
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Fiona blinked twice but uttered no sound as the Muggle man was killed. It wasn't a surprise to her that Rosier had killed a Muggle. It was always a question of when. She decided to head for the courtyard to repel some Muggles. Hopefully, she wouldn't have to resort to more harmful methods.

One minute, they were talking about rats and hypothetically playing hide-and-go-seek with Muggles.... and the next minute Bernadette Grantham was able to see thestrals.... or would be able to, if she went outside looking for Muggles and wound up in the barns somehow.
But she couldn't do it. She couldn't move. She was shaking, her hands in fists by her side, her feet frozen to the ground. He'd just... offed a Muggle. Like that. For no reason. Someone that coulda been her dad, her granda, her uncle she never met, her brother's roommate.
Bernie was malfunctioning and completely in shock.
