HoM Lesson 1 - The Weasleys Today it definitely felt like FALL in the castle. Gabi was waiting at her desk at the front of the classroom as you enter. She was feeling extra fall-y today and was wearing an oversized scarf and leaf earrings with her outfit. See? She could be FUN and COOL when she felt like it! Some days the chill in the air just made you feel like you needed to celebrate the weather, you know? "Come on in everyone - please have a seat, we will get started shortly," she announced as the first group of students began to enter. There was no hint to what the lesson could be about today - nothing on the board, no knick knacks on the desks. Just Gabi, waiting patiently for everyone to arrive. OOC: Hello! First off - welcome to your first History of Magic class of the term! While we are still rather early in the term please note your characters have had a handful of lessons with Gabi already since a month has already passed, so she is already familiar with your characters and vice versa. Second, I'm so sorry I didn't post an announcement! Time got away from me and we just finished up moving into a new house, so things got crazy with some unexpected internet issues and my usual work schedule on top of that. Don't worry, though, we'll have plenty of time to still do what we need to do in the lesson! Be sure to read the classroom rules and SSRPG rules before posting. We will move on in CLASS PROGRESSION: Mini Activity - Name some magical families and their impact on history Question 1 - Name a member of the Weasley family! Question 2 - Why were the Weasley's looked down upon by their fellow pureblood families? Main Activity - Make your own family clock! |
Kinsay never liked history very much. It was probably one of her least favorite subjects. She had nothing against Professor Recard, but history was so boring. All they did was talk about old stuff. None of which she cared for, thus far. Maybe she'd like it more if Professor Recard told stories the way daddy and cousin Cooper did. kiz would have to come up with a way to suggest that. As it was, however, Kizzy was early for class. She bounced in, giving Professor Recard a tiny wave. "Hi Professor, I like your earrings." They were nice. Maybe she'd ask to get her ears pierced over the summer so she could wear nice earrings too! Emmerson could come with and they could get MATCHING earrings. It'd be great. Also great? The seat she picked. It was right in the middle, best for learning things. |
Ashley walked into her History of magic class with a smile on her face. She found history to be rather boring, but she liked the teacher. "Hello professor! Nice outfit! Epic earrings!" she said happily. She sat down at a seat in the front of class and started to draw on her wand arm because she was really early. It wasn't as good as most of her drawings because she was drawing it with her bad hand(right hand), but she didn't want to draw on her bad arm while it was healing. Ashley was no expert, but she was pretty sure that it would get infected if she did that. Burns were nothing to mess with. She was drawing happy flowers, because she was in a happy mood. |
Another day, another set of lessons. Same old, same old. History had some promise, but they never seemed to cover the stuff Nem was actually interested in, or even lightly skim the surface of it. Standard curricula were more liable to suck out the soul than a dementor, let's be honest here. Nem glanced over at Recard as they entered the classroom, noting the leaf earrings immediately. Sure. Whatever. The aesthetic, right? The aesthetic was a whole thing. They weren't sure what use that aesthetic was, but whatever. "Professor," was the greeting they gave as they arbitrarily chose a desk and dropped into the chair. Alright. Let's get this over with. |
stalking u, Nem Bernadette was just a few steps behind Nem as they entered History of Magic, and OF COURSE SHE NOTICED PROFESSOR RECARD'S OUTFIT. It was so fally!! "I can't beLEAF you found such perfect earrings, PROFESSOR!" Bernie greeted with enthusiasm, adding a few happy snaps on the end of her sentence for effect. What could she say, she was in a great mood. Naturally she had to go balance out her joy by perhaps sitting next to a human raincloud. "Nemesis," she acknowledged the Slytherin stiffly. Was she feeling bitter that Nem was now the Headmaster's favourite in their Defense classes? No, not at all, why do you ask? |
Another day, another lesson. Fall had come to Scotland and it even showed in Professor Recards outfit with the too big scarf and leafy earrings. Cole greeted her as cheerily as he could muster on his way to a vacant seat, after stopping to take a suddenly pained breath at the sight of the professors earrings. "Hello Professor Recard, nice earrings." He couldn't exactly spell out to her that those earrings reminded him very much about his dead mother. It would just put a damper on the lesson and it'd raise private questions he didn't want to answer. Cole nodded to Bernie, Kinsey, Ashley and Nemesis before slumping down in a seat at one of the desks in the middle of the classroom. Pulling out a parchment, he began doodling on it with a muggle pen as he waited for things to start. Anything to distract his thoughts. |
History of Magic. Boooooring. Valentina walked into the classroom, not the least bit excited about this class because it was going to be dull for SURE. She did like the professor’s earrings though! “Hello, Professor!” She took a seat somewhere near the back, best for taking naps if things fo a little TOO boring heheh. Not that it was likely to happen because she didn’t want to end up losing points but just in case y’know. |
Another History of Magic lesson with her head of House. Claudine was still adjusting to this fact. At least Fuller-Thompson hadn’t left Hogwarts; she could still talk to him when advice was needed. The girl wasn’t sure how good at that Reccard was but she held a soft spot for Fuller-Thompson as he had helped her sort out her career options at a time when she had been very confused. “Hello, Professor.’’ The Snakette thought that Reccard looked very nice today, and especially loved the scarf. But no further comment was made and she proceeded to find a seat. Where? At the usual back of the class. |
Aboli would spare Professor Recard with more awful leaf puns She also did not like the leaf earrings. But to each their own, she supposed.... |
After a full month at Hogwarts, Amari finally managed to get to a class without getting lost on the way, and if that wasn't proof she officially belonged, she wasn't sure what was. Entering the classroom, she took a look around and noticed there wasn't anything written on the board, which was different but nothing of concern. And then she noticed the professor and her autumnal apparel. "Morning, Professor! Your accessories are fabulous. Very trendy." Amari gave her a smile and made a mental note to look into seasonal accessories like that. Heading over to her seat now, she took out her book and waited for class to start. Although History of Magic wasn't her strongest subject, she always thought it was interesting, so she was excited for today's lesson. |
Another day, another lesson. Had she really been back at Hogwarts for a whole month already? Time seemed to be flying by. Avalon was more than excited for fall, though. Even though she loved warm weather, there was something so magical about the changing leaves and autumn skies at Hogwarts. "Hi Professor," the Ravenclaw said as she slid into a seat near her fellow prefect with a wave (Aboli). Professor Recard sure looked fall-y today. She always looked fashionable, but Avalon particularly liked the autumn vibes of her outfit. Perhaps it was time to dig out her own seasonal scarves and sweaters as well. |
Mamie was excited about History of Magic today. She smiled at the professor as she walked into the classroom. "Good morning professor," she said, admiring the woman's earrings. Leaves were a good way to celebrate autumn...maybe she should paint some little leaves next time she did her nails. She took a seat toward the middle of the room, next to another first-year (Kinsay). She nodded at the other student in greeting, then started getting out her note-taking supplies. |
It was History of Magic time and Naya arrived for class with plenty of time to spare. She entered the room with a cheerful greeting. “Hello Professor. I like your earrings.” Naya loved fall at Hogwarts and the earrings were a nice touch. Even though fall didn’t bring color changes at her home, she enjoyed the experience at school. Hopefully she would get a chance to break out her camera and get some cool photos. Spotting one Cole Vance, Naya went and plopped down in the seat next to her boyfriend. “Hey there”, she said before noticing that his mood seemed down. “Are you ok?” He certainly didn’t seem that way and Naya was worried. |
After last years business with Newt Scamander all school term, Blake was rather looking forward to another fun year of history of magic, even though History wasn't a huge fun subject (in Blake's opinion). "Hello Professor" Blake added as he came into the class room. She seemed to be over doing the fall thing in his brain ... but who knows .. maybe she was cold and that was the reason for the scarf. |
Ever since that first DADA lesson of the term, normal classroom setups put Heath on edge! How did he know the seemingly mundane appearance didn’t hide some cruel twist to come? His heart sank as he entered the classroom to find no clue to the lesson’s subject anywhere… unless the professor’s festive outfit was some sort of hint. He couldn’t see how, though. Try as he might, he couldn’t recall any historical figure associated with scarves or earrings or leaves. Despite his thoughts, his face showed no sign of worry or suspicion; Heathcliff Jones was nothing if not a good actor! “Hello, Professor Recard,” he greeted with a polite nod and a slight smile. It was only then that he realized her outfit looked like something his mum would wear, and no, that wasn’t an insult. He appreciated the reminder of his fall-obsessed mother. Should he compliment the professor? He’d heard other students do so, but they all were girls. Coming from him, it might be too weird! Deciding against it, he made his way to the back of the room as he did every lesson since the start of the term. “Hi,” he whispered, taking an empty seat beside Claudine. He neatly arranged his supplies and looked toward the front of the room. What would this lesson have in store for them? |
Thank Merlin Kizzy was sat in the middle today. It was one of those days. Y'know, the kind where you didn't wanna do much and you certainly didn't wanna hear about dead people. Too bad history wasn't an option. Someone said if you skipped, you got called in by your Head of House. Right now, that was the Headmaster and he was about the last person in the entire castle that Emmerson was trying to see. The First Year nudged her friend before sinking into her own seat. What earrings were everyone on about? "Hey Profe--" Oh. THOSE. "Can me and Kizzy borrow them after class? We promise we won't lose them. I think all three of us have the same ear size." Baaaasically. Hardly a noticeable difference. "She doesn't have hers pierced yet but we can use a sticking charm." They were VERY responsible for their age and would make sure they gave them back after. |
"It's Kizzy and I, you hooligan," Phoebe ruffled both Emm and Kizzy's hair as she squeezed past them toward a seat. They were both hooligans, actually, but they didn't have to be uneducated hooligans. Phoebe took a seat and pulled her robes more tightly around her. It must be nice to be a professor and not have to wear a school uniform every day. Extra layers. Accessories. Probably pretty shoes, because the professor always had pretty shoes. Phoebe tried to tilt sideways out of her chair to see if the professor's shoes were visible today. "Hullo, Professor. Nice day for a lesson, isn't it?" |
SPOILER!!: Greetings! A small turnout, but a healthy one nonetheless - so that meant it was time to begin. Gabi waved her wand, closing the door to the classroom and signaling that it was time to start. Any latecomers would be punished accordingly. "Good morning, class," Gabi greeted them all with a smile. "Today we have a lot to cover, so let's get right down to it! The topic of today's lesson will be magical families. The magical population of Europe - and the world in general - is much smaller compared to the population of muggles. For hundreds of years, many wizards had a certain distain for marrying muggles and preferred to marry magical people in order to preserve their bloodline. That has, obviously, changed within the past few centuries, and the stigma around blood type has also changed drastically as well," she paused in order to let people catch up on their notes. "Still, the effects of that attitude can be seen today, as many families can trace their ancestors back generations when it comes to magical blood," she added. "Because of this, you'll find while studying history that many families will pop up numerous times, often over the course of many generations. When you only have so many people in the general population with a magical background, even the muggleborns amongst us will often end up marrying into a magical family, or creating a line that eventually grows to include members of other wizarding families," she explained. And there was absolutely nothing wrong with that! It was what made them all so special and diverse! "So, for our mini activity today, I'm going to have you partner up with someone and do a mini presentation to them about magical families that have had an impact on wizarding history," she explained. There were MANY of them to choose from, so she hoped to get a large variety of answers. "Some of you may even belong to families who have had Ministers, Hogwarts Professors, Quidditch players, and so much more incorporated in them throughout the years. However, I do ask that if you DO come from a large family, that you don't select them as your answer for this activity," she added. Where was the fun in that?? "I will get you all some time to brainstorm TWO magical families each. Within those two families, I would like you to name ONE person who had an impact on history and how they did it in your presentation. This doesn't need to be too fancy - just write out the list on your parchment and when you are both done, take turns explaining to your partner the families that you picked," she explained. It was a mini discussion of sorts amongst the students, and she was curious to see how they approached it. "It does not necessarily have to be a POSITIVE impact on wizarding history, either," she added. Just in case anyone was wondering... "Alright, let's get started, I will give you all ten minutes to complete this activity," she told them all before putting the assignment rules on the board behind her as a reminder: Quote:
OOC: Alright everyone, mini activity time! The activity is pretty simple - select a partner and RP your character writing out the requirements for the assignment and then going over their answers with their partner. There are MANY wizarding families to choose from, so try and get creative! YES, SS CANON FAMILIES DO COUNT so if your character is the descendant of SS famous characters like Lord Borr, feel free to name drop them! We will move on in 36ish hours, possibly a bit longer depending on how much of a roll I get on with unpacking during my day off Tuesday :P as always nudge me if you have questions! |
Ashley started to panic a little bit. THey were studying wizarding families? She didn't know about any wizarding families. She hadn't even asked anyone about their families. She anxiously looked around for someone who looked like they knew what they were doing. |
partners? ^_^ Quote:
Did she feel like working with a first year??? But she caught sight of how lost she looked...and...her heart did a THING that was annoying. Aboli sighed and scooted closer to the girl. "Hey...wanna' work together? I can help you out..." she offered the girl a genuine small smile. "She's not asking us to do rocket science! We got this in the bag!" Encouraging??? Right???? |

Kiiizzzyyyy Well...she supposed that worked, too. "We can go shopping togeth--" Half way through enthusing about shopping with the professor, she felt a hand in her hair. As it so happened, it was the hand of one of the best people she knew. The little girl grinned an apology to Phoebe before turning back to the professor. "Kizzy and I." See? She was learning. And now they were jumping right into it with a discussion and p a r t n e r s~ Emmerson twisted in her seat to face her bestfriend. It was understood they were partners. That went without saying and she wanted to make sure everyone ELSE knew, too. In her experience, when professors told them to partner up, it became something like a free for all and that had caused her to be snatched a few times when she wasn't paying attention. "Let's work together." She declared...a little louder than was necessary but not loud enough to be a full on disruption. All she needed was to be loud enough for people in the vicinity to KNOW. The little Gryffindor reached into her school bag and fished out some parchment. "Let's decide on the families we wanna talk about, then we can pick whoever in them to present about. The Weasleys are easy, let's pick them and...and....and....um....who else?" As it happened, limited knowledge didn't get you far. |
Quote:
Which...she had no clue where she wanted to go with this. Could she do Salazar Slytherin's family? Was it too obvious? Hmm. She COULD do the Shacklebolt's, too......there was that famous Minister and THEN the family was still really famous, what with one of them being the lead auror or something, right? "I"m going to do the Shacklebolt's," she said gently. "They were pretty cool, too." |

partner anyone? All this talk about magical families made Avalon wonder about her own ancestry. Her dad was a pureblood, so surely the Sinclair family went back several generations. They must not have done anything remarkable, though, because she had never read about any of them in her history books. Perhaps she'd have to send an owl home and ask her dad. That could be interesting information. Now, who to choose for the activity? She glanced around the room to find someone to work with while she thought of potential wizarding families. There were so many to choose from. Of course, her mind instantly went to the Potters, but there were also the Blacks, the Shacklebolts, and the Lestranges. Or maybe she would write about the Weasleys! She loved the Weasley family. They were probably her favorite historical family. Plus, she was insanely jealous of anyone who had that many siblings. It would be so cool to have more brothers and sisters. That way, you'd always have someone looking out for you. |
