Potions Lesson in the Duelling Arena

https://cdn.nickpic.host/images/ppiCAb.png

In previous years, Noble had held this lesson in the Great Hall. Since both that and the potions of corridor were out of bounds, however, he appreciated that Trent had lent him use of the duelling arena for the next hour or so. Hopefully the Headmaster wouldn't regret doing so by the time the bell went for morning break.

The door is propped open on arrival, and inside, there isn't a practice dummy in sight...nor are there any chairs. The room looks shorter than usual, a heavy dark green curtain covering the back wall. Tables are pushed up against the side walls, three on the side with the door, and four on the opposite wall. There's obviously a variety of objects on each, but the contents are currently hidden with a cloth. And at the front there's a somewhat cluttered front table, housing four small cauldrons in a row, a stack of small clear cups, wooden stirrers and a pile of scrap parchment and paper.

A fifth cauldron is in the Potions professor's arms, where he is carefully stirring its contents with a glass rod. "Hurry up and sit down," he says, looking towards the doorway. If the man is frustrated by his recent upheaval, he isn't showing it.

Lesson progression:
Question: how can you stick/attach things together?
Activity: identify the adhesives
Activity: choose the right adhesive for the job
Extra activity: try the gripping solution on the climbing wall!

Patrick came rushing in. These stairs from the Gryffindor common room was absolutely brutal. It was no wonder all those gryffindors were in better shape than he was. He was always sweating in his classes, he missed the chill of the dungeons. He was always worried about being late, yet here he was early.

He slid into a seat and looked at Nobel and his cauldron in his arms. He was confused but not offended by his short tone. “hullo” he said as he grabbed a sheet of paper out of his bag not wanting to pester their professor with idle chit chat

SneakySeverusSnape 07-10-2019 02:05 AM

Despite it being a rather long and exhausting stroll from the Ravenclaw common room to the duelling arena, Analiese walked through the doorway at a normal pace and not at all out of breath. She quietly greeted Professor Noble, whilst speaking with a stutter. Previous events had pushed the stutter into her. "H-hello, sir." Unfazed by his horrible tone, she slid into a seat and peered curiously at the five cauldrons in the room. She let her imagination decide the contents of each one. And then her mind travelled to the mist. The horrifying creature she witnessed in there. The ghastly beast that had tried to attack her innocent soul.

Ginevra 07-10-2019 02:20 AM

Daisy was slowly getting used to travelling some distance from the Ravenclaw common room to where she wanted to go and arrived a few seconds after Analiese. "Hello, Professor Noble," she greeted before quickly finding a seat and sitting down. Usually, she was very excited about Potions class but this time her stomach was in knots.

ArianaBlack 07-10-2019 05:41 AM

Professor Noble may not have shown his frustration by the recent upheaval--though Nina was almost certain this was due to his demeanor usually being quite grumpy to begin with--this particular Slytherin fourth year DID show her frustration. Though perhaps this wasn't much out of the ordinary either, as she typically entered this particular lesson space with a subtle frown. Something, which, stayed quite consistent even after the castle lockdown.

Nina made her way to the dueling arena, slightly annoyed by how often she was forced to use the stairs now, even on her way to Potions lessons. She paused briefly to acknowledge her Professor with an empty sort of look (she was still polite) and slid into a seat next to Patrick Dooley. Because he was pretty. And hopefully had some intelligence when it came to potions, as she planned on carrying her act through this lesson as well. It was standard behavior by now.

DuckyLinJi 07-10-2019 06:08 AM

One thing that he prided himself on was that he had not been late to any class since his fourth year (the SORE training had really afffected him) so when he made his way to the duelling area and heard the Professor's telling them to hurry up he quickened his pace despite being on time.

As he entered, a feeling of guilt went over him as he remembered that he had nearly given Rylee a concussion by accident in this room and he scratched his arm before he nodded at the Professor, his blue eyes looking at the cauldron he was stirring with a hint of curiousity. But like always he did not bother asking what ir was. He disliked it when someone would ask a question which would be answered later anyway. No patience some had. "Despite the circumstances, i hope you're doing well, Professor" he said with a small smile before he found himself a working station to stand behind.

Jean Granger 07-10-2019 07:19 AM

Luckily for the Ravenclaw, the long distance from the common room to Potions class was a familiar one. In fact, the duelling arena was even closer to her dorms than the dungeons were - you could say it was a silver lining to the mist problem... it was difficult to stay optimistic at times like this. However, the new arrangement did not make her any lazier, and Jade made sure to arrive early to class.

"Hello, Professor," Jade greeted as she moved to take a seat. She wondered what Headmaster Trent would say if they made a mess in this room.

sweetpinkpixie 07-10-2019 12:27 PM

Potions had nearly become a class he resented. Nearly. But he also refused to let anyone take his admiration for the subject from him and thus he was, mostly, looking forward to class. There was some frustration still manifested in his knitted brow, however, that one of his master plans for the term was unlikely to come to fruition. It wasn't so much that his plan wasn't going to get the follow through it deserved more so that he was loathed the fact that ingredients and time had now been wasted.

......because of this stupid mist.

He had initially assumed that this lesson would be a joint one with Defense Against the Dark Arts seeing as it was in the Dueling Arena, but his arrival proved otherwise. Unless the headmaster would be coming later. A cursory look was given to his surroundings but soon enough he had found himself a seat, as instructed. His usual polite nod of the head offered to Professor Noble and nothing more.

....though his thoughts were loud about what he should do come the conclusion of today's lesson.

lazykitty 07-10-2019 02:58 PM

It was lucky that Archer had decided to keep up her exercise regimen despite the fact that there was no Quidditch this term as the Ravenclaw common room was farther away from pretty much everything. It was so irritating, but she was actually trying to be a good prefect and not complain too much. And she still wasn't acting much like herself, but then again, neither were a lot of people in this castle.

"Hello, professor," was her greeting as she entered the dueling arena. It was odd having a potions lesson here, even knowing the reason behind it (the mist). The stupid stuff had sent everything into chaos and even she, who loved chaos, was ready for it to go back to normal.

MadMadamMalfoy 07-10-2019 07:37 PM

Ugh, couldn't Noble have held this lesson somewhere , anywhere else?! Tina knew the answer must be no, but that knowledge did nothing to make her feel better. Being in the dueling arena made her nervous! Noble may be the one conducting the lesson, but they were technically on Trent's turf and she wanted nothing to do with him. This place was nothing but a bad reminder anyway. It was here where she learned just how toxic Hogwarts could be, student turning against student, professor against professor. It was disgusting!

She shook her head to clear the memories of that disaster of a school assembly. After that, she hoped she'd never have to set foot in the dueling arena again, but here she was. She'd been here more in the past weeks than in her first 1.5 years at Hogwarts combined! Despite everything, she was careful enough not to let her aversion show on her face as she walked in. "Hello, Professor," she greeted, her voice a little quieter than normal so as not to distract Noble from the potion he was stirring. Any other time, she would've wondered what was inside the cauldron, but recent events had sapped her curiosity. Unless it was a potion to make them impervious to the mist outside, it didn't matter what it was.

Noble's command went in one ear and out the other as she hurried to the nearest available seat and began organizing her supplies around her in an almost robotic manner, hoping the menial task would distract her thoughts. No need to tell her to hurry… the sooner class began, the sooner it would be over and she could get out of here!

emjay 07-10-2019 07:42 PM

As Gunnar stepped into the dueling arena, he wondered if they'd be having Potions class in here for the remainder of the term. Or at least until the mist was taken care of, because hopefully that would be any day now, right? All this displacement was just weird and unsettling, and while he could relate to Professor Noble's plight, he still liked to use the dueling arena for what it was actually intended and he hoped that wouldn't come to an end.

He gave an acknowledging nod to the professor as he passed him and went to find a seat. Uh. Just where he was supposed to sit, he was unsure with no chairs in the room. But he waited over by one of the tables on the opposite wall, giving a bored look to the cloth covering some sort of objects, and waited for further instructions.

hermionesclone 07-10-2019 10:29 PM

This was........ weird.

Not the weirdest setup for a classroom he'd been in but, y'know, still weird.

Lucas stood somewhere by the door, looking around with a mixture of confusion and curiosity on his face. The rearrangement was a little...... weird? Again? Yeah. It made him feel even more antsy than he was currently feeling and he wasn't sure why. Maybe it was because, as much as Noble had tried, none of this looked like it belonged in here.

He slowly walked further into the room, trying to look at everything as he went before his eyes finally landed on the Professor himself, just as he told him to hurry up. Uh. Okay. "Hello, Professor." He wanted to ask what it was the man was making but something with the way he'd been speaking told him not to. Maybe not now. Not yet.

He also wondered why there were only four other cauldrons but, again, he wasn't asking. He was just going to go and sit somewhere over-

........ Oh. No chairs?

Lucas paused, taking a moment to just look around the room in confusion again, before shrugging and plopping himself down on the floor. This would have to do.

gritandgrace 07-10-2019 11:00 PM

Another day, another class. Eni was perpetually tired at this point in the term, but potions was enough to make her wake up. "Hello Professor." she said with a smile as she went to take her usual seat.

Kimothy 07-11-2019 09:39 AM

The duelling arena didn't look like a duelling arena today, just like how it should be since it was potions class, but it threw Drewett off for a moment. He was still somewhat adjusting to the changes that had to happen because of the mist, especially with how crowded the Ravenclaw tower was now that the Hufflepuff were bunking with them.

"Good day, professor," Drewett greeted with a little nod before making his way into the room. He...had no idea where he was supposed to sit down, considering their desks were all pushed against the walls. The fifth year instead decided to wait by the table beside Gunnar's and offered half a smile in greeting to his friend.

hermygirl 07-11-2019 10:42 PM

Were kids these days so unbelievably spoiled that they couldn’t just simply sit cross-legged on the floor in the absence of chairs? That had been what he’d told them to do, no? Sit down? Two perfectly simple words that most two year olds could understand. What in Merlin’s name was this sliding nonsense? Noble had thought it quite obvious that in the expanse of wooden floor in the middle of the room, they should simply just find a space to sit in. “Just find a space on the floor, and sit still in it before I take points,” he said brusquely, watching them repeat the action one after the other like sheep. Patrick, Analiese, Daisy, Nina, Tina

Grumble.

And then there was Dorian, Gunnar and Drew, standing at the tables at if they knew something he didn't. “Butt. Floor. Now.” He was starting to feel like the topic of today’s lesson was going to be a terrible idea if they couldn’t follow one simple instruction.

Yes, he knew it was different. Yes, he knew they had been through a lot of changes recently. They weren’t the only ones. More than half of Noble’s stuff was still stuck downstairs, beyond the mist. He was doing his best to continue as normal...and this lesson was one he taught at this time every year, usually in the Great Hall.

It was almost a relief when Lucas easily plopped himself down on the floor. “Good morning, Lucas,” Noble said with a nod. Thankfully others had been listening too, and once Noble had put down the cauldron he’d been stirring, he saw that Jade, Eiji, Archer and Eniola had also joined.

With a purposeful stride, Noble went to the door, and after checking for stragglers, closed it. It was time to start, and he now raised his voice. “What different ways are there of fastening or attaching things to something else? …can you give me some of their pros and cons?”

sweetpinkpixie 07-12-2019 12:00 AM

It was a small 'sacrifice' to sit on the floor rather than a stool - though in private Eiji rather preferred the floor as it gave him a more intimate setting with what he was brewing - and the Slytherin had no real problem with doing so. His only problems with the subjects were lost in the mist, which was very very irritating.

Irritable as he was, Potions was providing him the distraction he needed. Even if the topic, and everything really, still someone spun back around to his angst. "There is the Permanent Sticking Charm," he offered after raising his hand. "The pros are that it is extremely effective. The cons being that it is so proficient, lasting indefinitely."

Seemingly like his sour mood these days.

Ginevra 07-12-2019 12:33 AM

Daisy quickly sat down on the floor because she didn't want to get points docked from her house. She raised her hand at Professor Noble's question and replied with, "There is the Sticking Charm. One pro is that it is reversible. I honestly can't think of a con, sorry, Professor."

Lissy Longbottom 07-12-2019 02:41 AM

Sitting in a cross legged position wasn't THAT uncomfortable, but of course Nettie had chosen to wear her skirt instead of her slacks today, so she was sitting with her legs off to the side. More lady like, of course. It wasn't the most comfortable, though, and she hoped that soon they'd be up and moving around. How hard was it to conjure up a couple of chairs, honestly? She made a mental note to look it up later.

She raised her hand when he asked the question, her brain going in a TOTALLY different direction than Eiji and Daisy's. "Epoximise, Professor. It's a transfiguration spell that basically changes the makeup of one of the two objects you're casting on to a...sticky substance. The pro is that it sticks to just about anything - the con would probably be that it's kind of hard to reverse, since it's a transfiguration spell, not a charm, you could conceivably mess it up and fuse them together, and you don't want to touch the sticky object," she explained. At least, from the small amount she had read on it, that was what she had gathered.

Jean Granger 07-12-2019 09:51 AM

Were there potions available to fasten or attach things together? Was that what they were going to learn about today? These were the thoughts that immediately popped into Jade's mind at Professor Noble's question. She knew about the spells that the older students mentioned, but not a potion that served a similar purpose. Even if there was one such potion, she would probably prefer to use the Sticking Charm, because it was much quicker. Other than those spells, hmmm...

"You can use glue, which is a Muggle substance that you can apply to objects to bind them together. An advantage is that it's easy to use, even by Muggles and Squibs - obviously - and young witches and wizards who cannot cast spells. But it may not be as strong as other magical methods," the second year said, her hand raised. The professor was probably not asking about non-magic ways since this wasn't Muggle Studies, but he did not specify that in his question and she couldn't think of anything else, so that was the answer she gave.

lazykitty 07-12-2019 12:18 PM

There might've been a silent sigh from the Hufflepuff prefect as one of of the students who remained standing had been one of their own. It wasn't as if Professor Noble was asking them to sit on the ground after all, and there were ways of sitting on the floor in a skirt and remaining a lady. But, she kept those thoughts to herself.

As for the question....."There's staples, though you might not want to use them on anything other than paper. And finding them or a stapler in the wizarding world might be nigh on impossible." Since they were muggle and plenty of wizards had an aversion to such methods. "But on the plus side, it's not a permanent method as long as you don't mind small holes or minor tears in your paperwork."

Kimothy 07-12-2019 02:04 PM

Butt. Floor. Now.

That would have made Drewett crack a tiny smile. Real mature, he was. But since that was directed towards him and that was also what the potions professor instructed them to do, the Ravenclaw glanced briefly at Gunnar before eventually take a seat on the floor. He didn't mind sitting on the floor. It was just different, but the fifth year chose not to pay too much attention to that since the lesson was about to start.

Giving it some thought, he'd already ran out of charms to offer. Drewett was sure he could think of another but that might take more time. Thinking outside of charms, the Ravenclaw raised his hand. "Th-there's spellotape, sir," he offered. He was aware it was mostly used for fixing, but it was also used for attaching things together. So. "A pro would be you d-don't need to know charms to use it." A kid could use it with ease. No prior charms knowledge necessary. "B-but I don't think it's as effective as the p-previously mentioned charms. Spellotape can be easily removed." Oh right, there were muggle means too.

DuckyLinJi 07-12-2019 02:51 PM

. . . . He had told them to sit down?

He had heard the 'hurry up' part clearly because it had startled him. But he had not registered the 'sit down' part in his brain at all and for a moment, he thought that the Professor had been too grumpy to remember he had not told them to sit down because he was obviously not the only one standing. Old age, you know. The Professor wasn't getting any younger. But when he turned to look and saw a couple of students had taken their seat on the floor before his outburst he realised that he was in the wrong.

Feeling embarrassed, the Ravenclaw apologised while trying to ignore his ears going red and hurriedly got a bit closer to the rest of the group and sat down on the floor before he could take away points. Anyway, He had not made a dumb mistake like that before ever since Scrimgeour had been Headmaster. So this was refreshing. Not.

He listened to the question and the first thing that came ro mind was the sticking charm but as Swann and Rasting had already mentioned them he kept his mouth shut. Spellotape also came to mind but why bother repeating answers. So for the time being, he stayed quiet.

ArianaBlack 07-12-2019 04:17 PM

Nina did not like sitting on the floor. People walked on floors. What if they brought dirt into the room with their shoes? It'd get all over her skirt, which for the record, was also quite difficult to sit with. ON THE FLOOR. And while she was quite unhappy to do so, she didn't protest because she also did not like drawing attention to herself during class. Ironic, yes. Very.

With a sour look on her face, she opted out of answering the question (unsurprising) and instead pretended to be uninterested as the rest of her classmates chimed in with their thoughts. Eiji and Daisy were thinking along quite similar lines, while Trinetta took the question in an entirely different direction. Nina's opinion of the Ravenclaw fluctuated quite frequently, however, she was slightly surprised by the answer the girl gave. For all it was worth, Nina had thought her yearmate to be a complete airhead. So her answer was quite impressive .

She quite liked Drewett’s answer too, it wasn’t the most effective means of binding objects. But it had a certain creativity that the other answers lacked. The Hufflepuff Prefects answer, however, was quite cringe worthy and Nina couldn’t keep a look of judgement off her face. Staples?

hermionesclone 07-12-2019 08:06 PM

It was almost a relief when Noble spoke to him normally and gave him a 'good morning', especially when he seemed...... well. It wasn't enough to make him want to ask about the potion but it was enough to cause a small smile to spread itself across the Gryffindor's face.

Fastening or attaching? Uh. That seemed easy until other people started answering and he found himself.... staring. Going quiet. Lost in his own thoughts now. There was a furrowed brow look on his face as he tried to think of something that hadn't been mentioned before. No sticking charms, no spellotape, no........

.......... huh.

It was then that his eyes found the cauldron Noble was working on. Were there potions that let you stick two things together? It would be gloopy and would go everywhere and....... oh. Oh. "What about superglue?" he asked, his hand up in the air, "I mean, it would be great for sticking two things together that needs something, uh, stronger, y'know? And if you want to stick heavier things together like wood or plastic."

Pause.

"And I guess it's not so great when you get it all over your hands? I mean, you have to be very careful with it." He scrunched up his nose just to show how disgusting it was to have superglue on your hands.

griffin 07-12-2019 08:08 PM

Cordelia had no qualms about sitting on the floor. Actually, she enjoyed sitting on the floor. Chairs were overrated. What things could attach things to other things? "Pins such as the ones that would be used to hold fabric together for sewing or nails that are used in construction are some types of metal fasteners." A lot of the metal ones seemed to be sharp and pointy. The types of adhesives she used frequently were the ones on the medical devices keeping her alive, but people had already mentioned glue, tape, and spells so she didn't want to just repeat everyone else. Were they going to make some sort of adhesive potion? Did they even have all the equipment and ingredients needed available?

hermygirl 07-13-2019 08:40 PM

It was unfortunate, but perhaps not surprising, that despite the fact they were in a potions class, the first three answers were all spells, two of which were variants on the same charm. Noble nodded at Eiji. “Good points, yes. The permanency can be both a desirable trait, and an unfortunate one. Though as Daisy mentioned, there’s a less long-term version should you be unsure if you want to be able to unstick the item.” He gave a slight smile at the Hufflepuff, before moving on to Nettie…who had an interesting suggestion indeed. “Nice answer, Nettie. There’s some people that argue to should be classified as a charm, but yes, it can be a little finicky to reverse and handle. Best used at a distance.”

Jade’s hand was the next to go up, and Noble nodded as he let his hands rest together behind his back. “Not just Muggle, actually. There’s magical types of glue too.” Two of which were in the cauldrons at the front of class, giving they were the topic of today’s lesson. “For the most part, as you say, it’s easy to use. But you do have to select the right glue for the job.” He looked to Archer next, and wasn’t necessarily surprised by her slightly out of the box answer. “There are. A less damaging solution would be the paperclip. But staples are a quick and convenient way to join pieces of paper. Some of you might consider them to keep your homework together.” Hint hint.

Drewett’s answer was one of the ones he’d expected to come out first; the Ravenclaw had no need to sound so nervous. “Yes, Drewett. Spellotape can be used for all sorts of odd jobs, even when magic isn’t appropriate. And it can be removed, though will damage the surface of some items.” Something that would definitely damage the items if attempting to pull them back apart was Lucas’ answer. “Definitely. Like glue, as Jade mentioned, just the stronger, more permanent version. And very easy to stick your fingers together with.” Hopefully they remembered that in their next activity.

And the last hand up was Cordelia’s. “Yes. Pins and nails are methods of fastening that have been used for hundreds of years. And depending on the material they’re used with, can be easily removable or a more permanent way of joining things together.” He glanced over the rest of class now, in case anyone had anything else to add. Noble didn’t mind Dorian staying quiet, better than saying a stupid answer after all, but the Potions professor did have a problem with the look on Nina’s face. “Something you would like to share with the group, Nina?” He eyed her a moment, before moving on with the lesson.

“Today we’re going to look at some different potions that can be used to stick things together. On the front desk are five cauldrons. I want you to take a sample of each in a clear cup, and then, using the descriptions on page 365 of your textbook, carefully identify which is which. There are wooden stirrers and scrap parchment for you to use in your investigations. Please cover the floor where you’re working with some newspaper before starting, wear gloves, and be very careful what you touch.” Better safe than sorry, especially since one of the options was StuckOnGlu, and he would prefer not to have to send people to the hospital wing...or for that matter, explain to the Headmaster why his duelling arena had students and random pieces of parchment stuck to it. “You may begin.”

Some catchup

Analiese quietly listened to the other answers without giving one herself. She wasn't in the mood for questions on methods of sticking objects together at the moment. As if that even made sense. When instructed, the young Claw carefully pulled out her copy of Arsenius Jigger's Magical Drafts and Potions. She turned to page 365 as per Professor Noble's instructions. She carefully read through it before settling the textbook down and approaching the five cauldrons. The 12-year-old wore the gloves provided and picked up a clear glass. She peered into the first cauldron and, with the help of a wooden stirrer, poured some of the white liquid into the glass.

siriusblackliveson 07-14-2019 12:08 AM

Patrick had listened to everyones answers writing down what they said as his head was off somewhere in the clouds. He was paying just enough attention to get the gist of the lesson and run with it. He looked at the cauldrons in front of him. Five they all looked like they had the exact same glue in it to him, but he hadn't taken a good proper look at them yet.

Grabbing a pair of gloves he grabbed five cups, sticks, and enough paper to figure out what was what. Laying paper on the floor before taking a cup and writing a 4 on it he took a sample of the pot. He looked at the goop that came out feeling disgusted because he hated glue. Glue was sticky and messy and not at all anything worth having to determine which brand/type. Making a disgusted face he grabbed a stirrer and rubbed it on the paper to see how the glue stuck to the paper.

He let the glue dry and try to figure out what it looked like. He put the other paper on top and tried to pull them apart. The papers moved and even after letting it sit for a few seconds he looked over the descriptions in his text book. After quickly reading through the descriptions he figured it was enough time to see if the paper had stuck together. He tried to pull them apart this time and they didn't move, much. He looked over the descriptions once more before deciding that it would either be muggle glue or a sticking solution.

Ooh, this was intriguing. Nettie was grateful to take a small break from the brewing - at least for the moment - and was kind of interested to see how well she would do at this activity. Also, she had NO idea there were so many different ways to stick things to other things.

Approaching the first cauldron, she peered in to the cauldron and observed the white liquid. She had a good feeling she knew which one this was, but decided to peek at the other cauldrons before she definitively wrote down her answer. She then moved on to the next one, taking note of the fact that the liquid was clear. The third one looked more like a glue than a potion - and she was pretty sure she'd seen this before at her house. Hmmm. On to the fourth cauldron...looked kind of similar to all the other ones. Sigh. Maybe this was going to be a bit harder than she thought.

The fifth cauldron was...well, obvious. No need to even bother coming back to this one. She took her parchment and scribbled her answer on it.

Daisy pulled on a pair of gloves and laid down sheets of newspaper on the floor around her in order to protect the surface. She then retrieved her textbook and turned to page 365. Daisy made her way to the five cauldrons and grabbing a clear cup and a wooden stirrer, she scooped some of the contents of the third cauldron into the cup by using the wooden stirrer. She quickly glanced at the fifth cauldron and made a mental note before grabbing a few pieces of scrap parchment.

Heading back to her spot on the floor, Daisy noticed that the wooden stirrer that she had used to scoop the substance of the third cauldron into the cup had become lodged and she couldn't get it to budge.

Figure out the contents of the cauldrons? That...... sounded easy enough, right?

With that thought in mind, Lucas put on some gloves and made his way up to the front desk for the samples. Was it easy to tell which one was which? Well, yeah, some. There was only one tape here and, even if he hadn't seen the textbook page, he was pretty sure he'd know what this one was. But that didn't stop him from collecting the sample, along with the other four, to figure out with the others.

He had to make a few trips but, eventually, he had five cups of samples, a wooden stirrer, some spare parchment, and newspaper. Maybe...... too much newspaper. But that was okay, right? He glanced up at Noble, just in case the man was watching, before spreading the newspaper across his, uh, 'workspace' on the floor. This bit of floor. This space was where he was going to work.

With the samples spread out and his textbook open to page 365, it didn't take long for him to write down what the tape was. It was pretty obvious, wasn't it?

Scribble scribble.

Now. He just needed to figure out the others.

Daisy headed back to the cauldrons and gathered the remaining samples, before heading back to her work area.

She used the wooden stirrer that she had used for the adhesive in the fourth cauldron and applied some of the substance to a piece of scrap parchment before carefully placing another piece of parchment on top at a slightly askew angle. Daisy was able to straighten the top layer of parchment and so she set that to one side.

Next, Daisy grabbed the cup containing the first cauldron's contents which she noticed was white in colour and quite thick in consistency. She used the wooden stirrer in that cup to apply a reasonable amount to the surface of a large piece of scrap parchment. Daisy carefully moved it next to the previous "experiment" and continued on.

Finally, Daisy inspected the clear and thick substance that she had gathered from the second cauldron. She applied some on a large piece of parchment and placed another piece of parchment of the same size on top.

She then went back to note her findings.

Yes, she'd seen the judgemental look on a certain Slytherin's face, but rather than react, she simply acted as if she hadn't, not caring if it bothered said Slytherin or not. Because, yes, it was a legitimate way of attaching one thing to another and that's what Professor Noble had asked for, no? Though, she was tempted to smirk as the professor called her out. Instead, she covered the floor in her chosen area with newspaper as asked, feeling slightly like a little kid in art class. Then she slipped on the gloves, grabbed a few plastic cups, a stirrer, and some scrap parchment and started gathering her samples. One of which made her thankful to be wearing gloves because it reminded her of superglue. Not something she wanted on her hands, thank you, for obvious reasons.

When she had a sample of all five potions, she returned to her spot, sitting carefully, and flipped her textbook open to the proper page. Okay, so one of these was muggle, a thought that did bring a smile to her face. And it was easy to figure out which one it was already, so she wrote it on her parchment that she would turn in. The next one she tried reminded her of superglue. She spread it on a scrap piece of parchment she ripped in half, placing the other half on top and trying to move it. Wouldn't budge. So, it was the magical superglue, then. She jotted that down and moved on to the next. Which was hard to tell what was by sight, she spread it on another scrap parchment, placing another sheet on top. She was able to move it for a few minutes before it dried. She marked her findings for that one down before moving on to the next. Which was definitely viscous. Dried all shiny too. She moved on to the last one, which she didn't even have to test to know what it was.

Next? The next one to stand out was the PVA glue because, well, it was white in colour. And it looked a little too familiar. As if he remembered it from somewhere like...... St Woboldo's? Yeah. Wasn't this used in arts and crafts? And if he remembered correctly, he remembered getting a LOT of it stuck on his hands and peeling it off afterwards - which felt great - which meant......

Scribble.

Now. A small frown formed on his face as he looked at the other three cups. This was where it started to get, uh, worse. Tricky. And he was sure he couldn't figure them out on their own so he pulled the pieces of parchment closer and started experimenting with them. Dipping the stirrer in the second cauldron, he gave it a quick stir before spreading a, uh, generous amount on the nearest piece of parchment. It was transparent, yeah, but he hardly took notice of that before he placed another piece of parchment on top of it, sticking it down firmly.

The result? The parchment kept moving, even if it was just for a bit, which told him that it really wasn't the magical superglue.

Hmmm.

Lucas quickly scribbled down an answer - was it right? he didn't know - before moving onto the third cauldron. He gave this cauldron a quick stir as well and started applying the gluey thing to a piece of parchment, spreading it arou-

......... oh. That was fast.

Confused, he lifted up the stirrer, but this time, the parchment he'd been working on came with it as well. Using his other hand, he tried to pull the parchment away, gently and then more aggressively, until there was a small riiiiiiiiiiiiip and.....

Yeah. Yeah, he knew exactly what this was.

And he also knew not to mess with magical - or muggle - superglue if he wanted to keep any of his fingers.

That left only one spot open, something he noticed as he finished scribbling in the superglue. Was he going to bother working on the last one and see if it really was what he thought it was? Not really. There was no point, right? But he did give it a look over, and maybe a stir with the stirrer, before scribbling down what he thought it was.

There. Done. He was done.

After peering curiously at the contents of the first cauldron and the textbook, Analiese determined it was Muggle PVA glue. She was indeed familiar with the substance, with all her encounters at her Muggle primary school. Crafting was a huge part of the school. Analiese quickly scribbled it down onto her parchment. "C-Cauldron one... Muggle... P-PVA... glue...", she quietly mumbled as she wrote.

The young Ravenclaw then turned to the glass containing the contents from the second cauldron. A glossy and transparent liquid. Either the gripping solution or the basic sticking solution. She grabbed some spare pieces of parchment and began to test - in quite a number of ways - which one it was. After a few minites, the 12-year-old concluded that it was the gripping solution and wrote it down.

Now for the contents of the third cauldron. A clear, paste-like liquid. Had to be the StuckOnGlu. Nonetheless, Analiese still tested the solution using spare pieces of parchment. Yup. Definitely was StuckOnGlu. She swiftly wrote this down on her piece of parchment. Then she turned to the glass with the contents of the fourth cauldron. Very similar to the one in the second cauldron, so it was the sticking solution. Analiese quickly wrote this down. Scribble scribble. And the fifth cauldron was obviously Spellotape.

Was there something she wanted to share with the class? Absolutely not. The Slytherin shook her head unapologetically. She very well knew that his question was rhetorical as he didn't pause for very long to allow her to share her thoughts even if she did have something she wanted to say. He had only eyed her for a moment before moving on with the lesson, it wasn't difficult to add together.

She only listened halfheartedly, keeping her eyes on Patrick and whatever he was choosing to write down instead because he was a far more interesting subject. When Professor Noble explained the activity, it took all of her might not to complain about it. This was ridiculous. There were far better ways to learn than to wiggle samples around with wooden spoons. And so, while she didn't protest, she did move to the front rather slowly to collect her samples after having set newspapers around her area. Returning back to her spot on the (gross) floor with two samples at a time.

She watched Patrick for a while as he began his technique of understanding what was in his samples, before reaching to look into her own. She began with the last potion, putting her gloves on carefully and tilting the cup this way and then. It was obvious. Spellotape. Even an idiot could figure that one out.

catch up and whatnot

Who cared about some boring glue when you were allowed to sit on the floor, aaaaye. Céline sat down, glancing around the improv classroom and tapping her left foot as she half listened to the Prof and her fellow students talk about glue. It's sticky, like. That's what it was.

Aye Grumpy Granny, do share, do share. Céline briefly glanced at Nina, classic grumpy granny to be looking unamused as always. Cheer up a bit, like.

Oh. They were identifying glues now, were they. Incredible, aye. Even Céline could manage this potions class, HA. Céline jumped up and joined the line, grabbing herself the cups of............glue. There. Identified em, HA.
Anyway. Serious business now, best figure out which lad is which. Céline pushed her hair out of her face and sniffed the first cup. "Smells like glue. Deffo is glue." Cel muttered to nobody in particular as she scribbled it down. We were on to a great start.

hermygirl 07-17-2019 02:27 AM

It seemed they all getting on with things, though some more enthusiastically than others. Noble eyed Nina a few moments, waiting for her to look at her own work, before glancing over the rest of the room. Patrick, Nettie and Céline looked to have a good start on the experimenting, whilst Daisy, Lucas, Archer and Analiese seemed to be flying through the list.

Well then…time to think about moving on.

Noble flicked his wand, and the covers on the tables to the sides of the room disappeared. “When you have identified the adhesives, it’s time for a more practical application,” he said, raising his voice. Stick pieces of paper hardly helped them learn to use the adhesives appropriately. “There are a number of workstations at the side of the room, each with a different task for you to try. Pick two to complete, using the most appropriate adhesive from the ones you’ve just identified. You may work in pairs if you wish.” Up to them to choose. "Let me know if you have any questions, otherwise...good luck." Some tasks weren't as easy as they seemed.

SPOILER!!: workstations

- hang a framed picture
- fix a loose page in a book
- mend a broken mug / plate / bowl (without reparo)
- put up a poster that can be easily removed
- add friction to the bottom of a pair of slippers to make them safer
- put up a shelf

ooc note: Everything required to complete a task is at the workstation, other than the adhesive (which is in the cauldrons on the front desk). So...for example, for the broken mug, the pieces are there ready. Feel free to let your creativity run with this!

Ginevra 07-18-2019 06:12 AM

First Workstation (ooc: Question)

Daisy quickly used her wand to perform a cleaning charm on her gloves as she listened to Professor Noble's next set of instructions. She deliberated for a short while on which two projects to complete. Once she was ready, Daisy headed for the first of her two workstations which was the broken plate.

Daisy bit her lip as she looked at the two pieces of plate. She decided that the StuckOnGlu would be the best adhesive to use because it needed to last. However, considering how her wooden stirrer got stuck, Daisy was feeling a bit apprehensive. She placed down some newspaper underneath the plate as a suitable work surface.

Heading to the third cauldron, Daisy gathered some of the adhesive in a clear cup and headed back to her plate. Daisy carefully lined the two pieces together before even thinking about applying the StuckOnGlu because she knew that there was no room for error.

When she was happy with how the pieces were lining up, Daisy grabbed a tiny paintbrush and gently dipped it into the glue. She carefully applied the glue to the parts of the plate when it had broken (the joins) and carefully put the plate together.

Daisy carefully placed the newly repaired plate on the newspaper, allowing it to dry which took next to no time. She carefully picked up the plate and was pretty pleased as she inspected her work.

Daisy then raised her hand. "Professor? Do I clear my workstation when I've completed my project?"

Slowfie 07-18-2019 03:28 PM

Well this was going grand, wasn't it. Céline hummed to herself as she identified the other substances, very nearly getting her gloves stuck to one of the substances a few times. "Good it's nothing permanent, like." she muttered to herself and put the cup aside, scribbling down the remaining glue-y glue glues in messy handwriting.
Cel squinted at her notes. Was.. Was that how you wrote it? She crossed out a "sollotion" and tried again after peeking at Lucas' notes. Solution. Perfect. Cheers yeah.

ANYWAY. The writing part wasn't important. The doing stuff part was. She checked out the different stations, quickly deciding on the broken plate for the first one. Practically a pro at repairing fine china by now, with all the plates and mugs that had accidentally been smashed when playing in door football. "Alright alright yeah. Do us a favour and sit still yeah." She placed the largest shard down in the centre and added some PVA glue to the edges. Whoops, not too much now. Cel glanced around to see if the prof was looking and quickly wiped the excess glue off, wiping her glove on her robe. There, much better.

After waiting for it to dry a smidge, Céline added the next shard. Ooo a lovely floral pattern, was it? It looked like it would fit right in in her granda's kitchen.

lazykitty 07-18-2019 06:15 PM

book page and poster

So, they just had to fix stuff with these potions? Cool.

The first station was enlightening. She'd always wondered how the witches and wizards that shunned muggle objects got their pictures hung (you know, since the obvious way to approach that was with hammer and nails). Though, she figured that would be the easiest to mess up so she moved on.

After inspecting the other stations, Archer settled on the book page first. Taking a good look at the page, she reached for the spellotape, ripped off a length slightly longer than the tear in said page, moved the outer most side of the tear (the one farthest from the spine) towards the other and taped them back together. There, page fixed.

The next station that she chose required a little more finesse. The poster. Obviously, the potion to chose would be the gripping solution. The trick, though, would be getting the poster straight. Anyway, she approached the cauldrons and spread some the gripping solution on each of the poster's corners. Then she returned to the workstation, chose a place on the wall that was within arms reach and placed the poster there. Taking a few steps back, she saw that it was a bit crooked. Great. She carefully pulled it back off the wall and tried again. And again and again, until finally the poster was straight.

lots of catchup

Oh, whoops. Gunnar should have realized by half the class sitting on the floor that he was meant to also, but... well, that would make brewing potions difficult, wouldn't it? Sitting on the floor?

But he was not about to question it. And when Noble barked the order at him and a handful of others, he exchanged a look with Drew before taking a seat on the floor next to him. Once the first question was posed to the class, the Slytherin paused in thought. Many of his classmates offered spells as answers or Muggle means of adhesive, and, while he knew all of those and thought they were suitable methods, this was potions class. Gunnar's go-to likely would have been a spell being that was his preference, but why had no one offered an adhesive potion as an answer?

But before he could offer one himself, class was moving on and he was taking notes with the parchment on his lap. Trying to figure out what each cauldron held didn't seem to be too difficult a task and he got up with his parchment and quill to see what he could determine.

Uh, what was the best way to go about this? Gunnar watched a few students as they began to determine what was in each cauldron and he decided to make five columns on his parchment, each labelled with the number of the appropriate cauldron. Taking his turn behind each cauldron once he put his gloves on, he dabbed a bit of each of the contents in the designated column on his parchment - all except cauldron five, of course. That was the easiest to determine, but he thought the others would be easy enough once he brought the glued up parchment back to his newspaper-covered spot on the floor and looked through his textbook.

Cauldron five was obviously the spellotape, but he cross-referenced what he sampled on the parchment with what was described in his textbook. Observing the viscosity, the color, and testing each of them with more scrap parchment, Gunnar soon came to a conclusion for each sample as to which adhesive they were.

Quote:

Cauldron 1 – Muggle PVA glue
Cauldron 2 – Gripping solution
Cauldron 3 – StuckOnGlu
Cauldron 4 – Sticking solution
Cauldron 5 – Spellotape
And just in time as it was time to move on. Gunnar looked up as Noble called them to attention, then shifted his focus to the uncovered tables. Eh, seemed easy enough and he chose to try hanging the poster. It was something he already knew how to do and therefore exceptionally simple. Maybe he'd challenge himself on the next task.

Getting up from his place on the floor, he moved over to where the posters were stacked on the table. In his dorm, he'd use a sticking charm, but at home where he was not able to use magic yet, he'd use spellotape. So that's what he'd use now. Gunnar helped himself to a poster and some of the spellotape, then affixed it to the wall. There. The dueling arena could use a little more in the way of decor.

So, what next? The Slytherin looked over at the workstation again. Maybe add some friction to the slippers? Or fix the broken bowl sitting on the table?

*catches up on all the things*

Text Cut: Pre-activity stuff
Tina flushed in embarrassment and indignation as she sat on the floor. Noble's threat stung, but she wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of knowing that. Not once in her time at Hogwarts had a professor ever threatened her with points loss, let alone for something as trivial as not sitting down fast enough! How was she supposed to know there would be no chairs provided? It was an honest mistake! She was sensing a pattern here… This made twice she'd set foot in the dueling arena, and both times involved a professor being snappish. If she didn't know better, she'd think Trent had placed some curse on the room that brought out people's worst qualities, which made sense in a weird way. Amplifying people's aggressive tendencies would theoretically make them more likely to duel each other, and this was the dueling arena after all… but that was neither here nor there.

She refocused her attention on the question asked. She thought of the usual things, glue, sticking charms, tape, etc., but those had already been said and didn't need repeating. The only other answer she could think of was stitches. Stitches were used to attach pieces of fabric (or flesh, in the medical context), so that counted as a method of fastening something, right? That was probably too much of a stretch. Fearing further disapproval for that answer, Tina remained silent, but her lack of speech didn't mean a lack of attentiveness. As she listened, she compiled a list of her classmate's answers as well as her own.

Oh, so they were identifying different forms of adhesives? Tina had to admit that sounded pretty fun, just the sort of straightforward, scientific work she liked! She listened carefully to Professor Noble's instructions, not wanting to make another mistake and get in trouble again, then set to work gathering the materials she needed. Before she did anything else, she took some newspapers and arranged a generous layer over her work area. If Noble was willing to threaten points loss for taking too long to sit, she didn't even want to know what he'd do if she spilled something! Not to mention Trent… the less she had to do with that guy, the better! Once she had her area thoroughly covered and her gloves on, she made her way to the front, grabbed a couple of cups, and filled them with the contents from the first two cauldrons, carefully carrying one cup in each hand back to her station so as not to spill. She neatly numbered the cups 1 and 2 before setting them down and going back for samples from the other three cauldrons. Holding three cups at once was a little trickier, but she managed without spilling a drop. After numbering and arranging all 5 cups in a neat line and a quick trip for stirrers and parchment, she was ready to begin.

The fifth cup was easy! It was definitely spellotape. Tina could tell just by looking at it, as it was the only form of tape in the bunch. The other cups would take a bit more analysis, however. She picked up the first cup and looked inside. Judging by the substance's white color, she was pretty sure this one was non magique muggle glue. She'd had a lot of experience using the stuff before in arts and crafts, so she should know… but she'd perform a couple more tests just in case. She stirred the stuff around in the cup. It had the same thick consistency as glue, but the only way to tell for sure was to actually try it. Using the stirrer, she spread a thin layer on a couple of scraps of parchment and stuck them together, then tried repositioning them. As the substance dried, she noticed the parchment wrinkling slightly, and she knew her hunch was correct. Muggle glue it was!

The second cup's contents weren't evident just by looking at it. This substance was transparent and when stirred, it had a viscous consistency somewhat similar to the glue. Hmm… that didn't narrow things down much. Tina tested the substance on parchment and found she was able to reposition the pieces several times. Well, that ruled out the StuckOnUGlue! She had a feeling this was the gripping solution, but she consulted her textbook to be sure. The description matched her findings so far, but there was still one more test she could perform. She applied the stuff to another scrap of parchment, then tried to scrape it off with the stirrer; it wouldn't come off. That confirmed it! Cauldron 2 was the gripping solution.

Three samples down, just two to go: the StuckOnUGlue and the sticking solution. Again, Tina couldn't tell which was which based on the appearances; she'd have to get straight into the testing, specifically testing whether or not the parchment could be repositioned. She spread each substance on a separate piece of parchment and stuck another scrap to each piece. Then she tried repositioning. The parchment stuck with cauldron 4's contents could be repositioned; cauldron 3's couldn't. That was a pretty good indicator, but just to be safe, she would do another test. After waiting for the parchment to dry, she tried pulling the pieces apart again. The substance from cauldron 3 wouldn't budge, while cauldron 4 had a little give. Now there was no doubt in Tina's mind. Cauldron 3 was the StuckOnUGlue, and cauldron 4 was the sticking solution. She jotted down her findings in her notes:

Text Cut: Tina's notes

Cauldron 1 - Muggle PVA glue

Cauldron 2 - gripping solution

Cauldron 3 - StuckOnUGlue

Cauldron 4 - sticking solution

Cauldron 5 - spellotape

Tina finished writing just in time to hear the instructions for the next activity. Apparently they were supposed to put the various adhesives to use…. well, that explained the tables! She got up and examined each station in turn, ultimately deciding to start with the broken dishes. She chose a mug with the loudest, brightest pattern she saw, thinking the busy pattern would make it easier to match the pieces, and gathered all the broken shards she could find with the same pattern. Now there was just the question of which adhesive to use. Tina thought for a minute. Not the sticking solution; it weakened over time… which would make a nasty surprise for anybody trying to drink out of the mug when it came apart! Muggle glue wasn't exactly infallible either, so she decided to go with the StuckOnUGlue. After retrieving a cup of the stuff, she set to work carefully examining and turning each broken piece to see how they fit together. Only when she was sure the pieces were aligned just right did she spread a thin layer of StuckOnUGlue on them, starting with the bottom of the mug and gradually working up and around to the rim, saving the handle for last. As she worked, she saw a large coffee mug with a tie dye pattern taking shape. It was an odd pattern for a mug, but she liked the bright colors. When she was done, she took a quick moment to admire her work, smiling slightly to herself.

Which station to do next? Tina looked around, her dark eyes landing on the slippers. That one seemed pretty quick and straightforward. Unlike the mug, she knew exactly which adhesive to use. The only logical choice was the gripping solution. All the others would leave the shoes stuck to the floor for an extended period of time (or in the StuckOnUGlue's case, permanently), and who needs that? She went back up front for a cup of gripping solution, then carefully applied a layer to the soles of the slippers, setting them aside, soles up, for a minute to allow the solution time to dry. Now she needed to test it out. Somehow she didn't think it was a good idea to test the shoes on the table or an uncovered section of the floor, just in case they left any residue, so she found a sheet of newspaper to use. She pressed each shoe into the newspaper, pulled them apart, then repeated the process a few times, as if to simulate a walking motion. It worked just like she thought it would!

hermionesclone 07-19-2019 05:33 PM

This was a very different way of doing a Potions class. He half-expected to be told to make a potion as well but...... DIY?

But, looking around, maybe this was a good thing.

Getting up, Lucas immediately moved over to the workstation with the broken mugs and plates and bowls. It just seemed easy, yeah? He even knew exactly what glue to use - because Spellotape was not the answer here. But even then, he had a feeling that this was going to be harder than he expected. Why? Because these were similar colours.

Picking up a few of the broken pieces, he started examining them over. There were round pieces and flat pieces and even a piece that had a fancy little curve at the end - a handle? Huh. But because these colour were the same, he...... was going for the shape, instead.

This was like a jigsaw puzzle, wasn't it?

Turning around, the third year moved to the cauldrons and grabbed another cup of the StuckOnGlu before heading back to the workstation. The hardest part? Finding the right pieces to put together. He let the flat pieces sit out and just started putting together the curved pieces. It was easier, you know? And the darker, uh, beige? Yeah, the darker shades were sticking out to him so he was going to work with that.

The cup of StuckOnGlu sat on the side while he started trying to put the different pieces together. The very curved bit? That had to go at the bottom. And then the ones that had a rounded edge had to go at the top, right? It was just the middle that was..... well, hard. There were big pieces and small pieces and then pieces that didn't fit even if they looked like they should fit.

Uggghhhhhh.

He didn't know how long he had been working on the pieces but, at some point, Lucas stepped back from the piles of pieces and..... nodded. To himself. Nod nod. This was it. He didn't know why he was feeling so nervous but he knew he couldn't just stand there and not do anything, right? So grabbing the bottom piece, he started applying some glue around it. All the way around the sharp edges that he was glad he wasn't touching with his fingers.

Good call, Noble.

Sticking the pieces together took longer than he expected but he was also glad that he'd figured out where they go first. If not, he might've been standing here all day and that would've been embarrassing. But the only embarrassing part of this was that some of the glue was spilling over the edges and this bowl was slowly becoming knobbly and weird.

When he finished, the Gryffindor held the bowl up and....... just looked at it. Awkwardly. It was still in one piece, yeah? And that was the most important part. But he couldn't help but feel like he'd like this to be smoother. Because this was not going to be sold to anyone.

Don't use this, Noble.

ArianaBlack 07-20-2019 06:56 AM

Identifying solutions was not a difficult task. In fact, Nina was sure she could have been among the first to complete the activity had she really put in the effort of doing so. Though she wasn't in any rush to finish. Surely Professor Noble wouldn't have expected it of her either. She made a point to lag behind in these lessons. It also helped that she had chosen her spot next to the Slytherin Prefect. He was a good chosen distraction, and Nina made sure to pay plenty of attention to him. She watched the way he worked, slightly irritated by the way he chose to go about solving the mystery. He was quite peculiar and his methodology was slow. Slow and painful to watch. But Nina watched anyway.

He was an easy chosen distraction. Very pretty. It was all the blonde on his head.

After some time had passed, Nina turned her attention back to her own work. Choosing to work incredibly slowly, wearing a look of confusion on her face. It was a well rehearsed look, one that she had learned to perfect over time. It was the same look she wore when Hudson helped her with Arithmancy. Her 'I don't get it' voice was even better, but she wouldn't be speaking in class.

Instead she quietly carried forward, hearing Professor Noble introducing the next activity while she still carried forward with the previous task. She had figured out the contents of cauldron 1 just as quickly as she had recognized the solution within cauldron 4, though she waited some time before scribbling down the answer on her parchment. The longer she stretched the activity out the better. It was proving a point. She even swapped her answers out, labeling cauldron 3 and 2 incorrectly. On purpose, of course. Though this was also information she'd choose not to divulge.

hermygirl 07-20-2019 06:07 PM

Noble started to wander the room as the students moved on to the practical. Daisy had made a fine job of mending the plate, though he grumbled at her question afterwards. “Yes, you should clear up after yourself,” he confirmed, an irritated tone in his voice. He was no more their house elf here than he was in their usual classroom. “Paper can go to the recycling bin at the front. The rest is probably trash.”

He moved to observed Céline next, and he watched curiously at both her method and her choice of adhesive. “Well, it wouldn’t have been my top choice for the task…but you seem to have things under control, at least.” Almost like she’d done this before. “You might find a hot-air charm useful to speed things along though.” PVA wasn’t the fastest drying, and he did want her to complete a second activity too.

His attention next caught Archer at the poster station. Her application of the gripping potion seemed to have worked well enough, though getting the poster straight appeared to be another matter. “Up a bit on the left,” he commented. “Though a definite pro of this approach…and I’d recommend it if you move into dorms at university. Doesn’t damage the poster, easy to straighten or switch out when you fancy a change, and won’t leave marks on the wall.” Talking of which… Noble gave a slight roll of his eyes as he saw which option Gunnar had opted for. “Now try removing it, with both the poster and painted wall in one piece…” Spellotape was somewhat of a lazy option in the professor’s mind, and perhaps a stronger adhesive than Gunnar was anticipating. It wasn’t designed for removal like other forms of tape.

Leaving the poster workstation, the brightly coloured ceramic pieces in Tina’s hands caught his attention. “That’s looking good,” he said. Not exactly what he would choose for a design, but that’s probably why he’d found it cheap in a muggle charity shop and hadn’t minded in the slightest dropping it on a stone floor for the purposes of this lesson. The other person at the workstation was also doing a surprisingly good job. “Perhaps you can put as much concentration into your next brew as putting that jigsaw puzzle back together, Lucas.” Kudos to him for his patience finding all the pieces…though, admittedly, it wasn’t exactly the most usable result.

Someone not putting anywhere near as much effort into her work was Nina. Yes, he’d noted the Slytherin’s gaze had spent more time on her Prefect than on her own work. And now he got closer and looked at her parchment, he was even less impressed. Which was always a dangerous risk to be taken with the potions professor. “Perhaps you should consider testing the potions and revising your answers, Nina, rather than ogling Patrick. Otherwise you’ll be staying here for an impromptu remedial lesson over lunch with a clear demonstration of the difference between the gripping solution and StuckOnGlu.” He was done with her antics, and if she didn’t pull her socks up, there would be consequences.

He turned to address the whole class now, walking towards the curtain covering the back wall. “If you’re done with your two workstations and have tidied up, then there’s an optional extra activity.” He tugged at the curtain, revealing a climbing wall. Nearby, was a cardboard box. “In the box are some socks and gloves that have been treated on the palms and soles with the gripping solution. You’re welcome to come try out exactly how grippy this potion can be, and why it’s sometimes referred to as the spiderman potion. I’ve put a cushioning charm on the floor, so no need to worry about falling off.”

ooc: hai everyone! Thanks for sticking with me. The climbing wall is just an extra activity if you want to have fun with it. Otherwise, I'll be finishing up class in about 24 hours or so.

Daisy nodded at Professor Noble's instructions and began to clean up her first workstation. She waved her wand and cast a non-verbal cleaning charm to return the workstation to its normal, clean state with paper in the recycling bin and trash in the bin.

She then headed for the workstation where the pair of slippers were. After inspecting the soles of the slippers, Daisy placed some newspaper down on the surface and headed to the second cauldron at the front and gathered some of the gripping solution in a clear cup before returning to her station.

She dipped a brush in the adhesive and carefully applied it to the bottom of each slipper. After a few moments, the solution was clear and shiny which signalled that it was time to see if she had used the correct adhesive. The slippers no longer slid on the ground. The right friction was there.

Daisy then quickly tidied up her workstation and shook her head at the climbing wall. Thank goodness it was an optional activity because she had no desire to do such a thing.

"Oops! Sorry, Professor," she gave him an apologetic look, and a well-rehearsed, sheepish expression meant to convey embarrassment. Of course she had made the mistake on purpose, she knew what she was doing, but as far as anyone else was concerned... Nina Castillo was just soooo bad at potions!!! It's why Eiji had to tutor her, duh! Merlin forbid anyone find out she actually enjoyed academia. It'd be horrible.

With Professor Noble's warning mind, however, the Slytherin took a second look at her parchment. Making a show out of "realizing" her mistake and quickly shuffling her answers to correct the matches. She did not want to be staying behind for a remedial lesson, though she also didn't hate the idea of being pulled away for lunch. She didn't like the majority of her housemates anyway, really Professor Noble wasn't doing a very good job of convincing her against her antics. He was only enabling them.

Once she had finally identified each solution, she joined the rest of her classmates in the final activity. Again, she made sure to go far slower than everyone else, but did so with reason.
