Charles's classroom looked much as it and the Great Hall always did. Desks and chairs were arranged in their usual fashion and the ceiling was enchanted to resemble the weather outside. Today it was a sky full of Cumulonimbus clouds intruded upon by occasional splotches of blue. As usual, the history of magic professor is preoccupied with some essay he is writing. He occasionally glances up as a student enters. Find a spot to sit and say hello if you wish.
The only thing different than usual about the classroom was the arrangement of a large blue cooler next to the professor's desk. The word ultrices is written on a paper taped to the top of the cooler. What could it possibly mean?
No, naturally Cam didn't mind that Abra joined them. Despite the fact that he did not show it in the same way that Chloe did (he wasn't sure what she was saying was entirely accurate??) he did smile at the other boy though. Not that they were that close but he did like him. Abra was definitely one of the people he didn't mind being around.
Scooting even closer to Stasya to make room for their group, he looked up to listen to the assigned task. They were...writing their OWN story? Really? Creating their own realities? That was...something. That sounded hard. And he wasn't sure he was completely up to that task. He wasn't that creative, to be honest. He was a decent writer but not in the imaginative sense.
So for once, Cam was very glad that this was a group project.
Even if his group included Derf. But hey, it could've been worse. And the Hufflepuff had a pretty interesting idea. Cam nodded along to both his and Stasya's words. "Maybe they can find an egg." The Muggle that is.

Of course she didn't mind Abra joining the group! He was their friend and she'd much rather work with her friends than random others that happened to also be in the class. Jessa was surprised he'd even have to ask and approved of Chloe's enthusiastic confirmation that he would fit right in. It wouldn't have been nearly so flattering if she'd been the one to say it. The younger claw just....had a way with motivational words that Jessa most certainly did not.
But also...someone please tell her she'd been hearing wrong and this wasn't actually what the group assignment was.
For several moments, Jessa sat staring at the man, wondering how best to react. In the end, she decided it best not to react at all so the young girl twisted to face her group once more, already zoning out.
Something about creating their own magical world and story with elements and such. Basically....book club. Right. Okay. She could do book club. The Ravenclaw crossed her legs and lifted the book she'd been reading once more. When in book club, yeah? To some extent, she was still tuned in to what the others around her were saying; Derf suggested something in their world with muggles and creatures...something about a fwooper from Stasya....and eggs from Cam, but she herself gave no input. There was nothing she had to offer and a whole lot she still needed to read.
If they so required it, of course, she would try to pitch in, but did they really need her for this? Did they really need to do this in the first place?

The group was growing exponentially! Kye scoot herself over just a little bit, to help make room, but she was not about to sit here squished for the next hour. She listened to Professor Curtains give the assignment, and started getting lost in thought. A world with their own magic system, hm? Well, not a completely unexpected turn, but enough… Wait a second, they had 40 minutes to create a world?! Is that really necessary, Professor? Kye got a fresh piece of paper in front of her, and had her quill ready. Oh. This was still her sugar quill. She put this one away, and pulled out one of her favorite pens. She loved not having to dip her quill in ink sometimes, let’s be honest.
Hmmm ideas, ideas... ideas… “What about something with creatures we don’t have much experience with anyway? Like… a sphinx… or a hippogriff or something? We can give them some kind of magical abilities they don’t normally have, or create some reverse reality where they have more wizard-like characteristics, and humans are considered subpar?” Kye didn't care if this was the actual idea they used, but they needed to get the ball rolling.

He was sorta failing to see the connection between this activity and the subject of History of Magic. Did he care? Not one teeny tiny bit. This activity was sort of his area of expertise and Max was eager to crack on with it. Any disappointment he previously felt when Hattie had joined them had gone now and he peered excitedly at the two Hufflepuffs.
"So we have to create our own fantasy world with our own magic, right?" Brilliant. This was brilliant! "I was thinking... what if we came up with something where WE are the characters. But not just any boring old everyday characters.. like, let's say there was a freak electrical storm or something that gave us all superpowers." Just like in some of his favourite comic books.
"I'll be Mystic Max." He was gonna go for Mystic Max the Mightily Magnificent but perhaps that was overkill. His grin grew wider by the second, it was obvious he was in his element here.

Having heard the instructions Bel's immediate thought was that she was glad that she was getting to work with Max. Not that she hadn't already been glad, because working with a friend always was something to be glad about, but he was really creative and imaginative, so he'd definitely come up with something epic. Which was lucky because this wasn't the kind of thing she thought herself all that good at. When Max took charge, Bel couldn't help but be impressed. He was impressive right? Hattie could see that too right? Everyone could, right? Straight away with the ideas. A smile broke out on her own face in response to his obvious enthusiasm.
"That's a really bonza idea. Like superheroes from your comic books!" Bel grabbed paper and a pen while she spoke, and started writing all this down. She wasn't sure if she was going to be a great contributor, but she could deffo write things down. And maybe.... maybe she should try to say something that Max might think was a REALLY good idea? Except... she was drawing blanks and needed a second to come up with something.
"What kind of powers does Mystic Max have?" Important question, but also it would buy her a moment to figure out a good idea for herself. She couldn't stick with the mundane superpower that she'd come up with the last time they had talked about superpowers, right? Except... except actually maybe she did have an idea. Bel thought his idea was good? His sudden nerd outburst hadn't weirded her out? That was all the encouragement Max needed and his brain immediately switched into overdrive. Hopefully Hattie was cool where they were going with this too because he noticed Bel was already starting to jot stuff down on her parchment.
He was on the brink of naming the loooooooong list of powers that Mystic Max was going to have when Bel threw in an idea of her own. And what a great idea it was! "Yeah yeah, awesome! That definitely works and would actually make a lot of sense. Nice one!" His huge smile said it all really. And then he quickly sent a huge smile in Hattie's direction too because it was weird if he was only smiley with Bel. Right? Right.
"Bonza Bel the Boistrously Brave! Keeper of the oceans, boss of the tides, master of the waves!" He was just throwing ideas out there but his imagination was so wild they just wouldn't stop. "One of your powers could be the ability to create tsunamis that could take out any bad guys in an instant! And the ocean creatures are always willing to help you out!" Noone would have a chance against Bonza Bel.
Okay, now Hattie needed a superhero name. Hmmm.

Hmm. As Hattie sat down she kind of considered that maybe she should have gone with another pair or group. It was just the three of them now. Not that she minded, small groups were good. But she didn't want the other two to think she was just tagging on with them. Hopefully they would all have good ideas. This task sounded pretty cool, and it was right up her alley. She loved all creative things. She wondered if she could draw out their super cool characters. Would that get them some extra points? It was her strong point after all. Maybe she'd see what the others thought.
"Mystic Max sounds cool!" Hattie mused with a little grin. Having super powers would be awesome. Though, she guessed that they kinda already did have super powers with their magic. But it would be awesome to have some different, more unusual ones. "Could totally do like powers relating to the elements...." She suggested, as she doodled on the edge of her page, doing a little doodle of a flying super hero. She was still trying to think of her super power. But maybe once they had Max's character down, then thinking of the other powers would be a bit easier.
Okay. There super powers sounded totally cool. And their names were related to their initial. So she totally needed to think of something that went with a H. "Uh... " This was harder than she thought actually. Maybe this was why she didn't need a super power. Thinking of a awesome name was hard. "I could be... " Uh. Some help please?

She still needed to know what Mystic Max could do though, even if she had some thoughts about that on her own that she was definitely keeping to herself.
"Yes!" Bel said, pointing at Hattie with her pen. "Elements, exactly!" But Bel had noooothing when it came to ideas for Hattie. She returned to notetaking, an ear on Max to hear what he'd come up with next.

Just when Maddie thought she and Septimis might just be a mere group of two, the Head Boy approached them and asked if they minded him joining in, as well. WHOA. The HEAD BOY?! This was big! He was like...the ruler of all the students or something like that! Maddie just bet he was super smart, too! With a smile and a nod, she said, "Yeah, of course you can!" She was pretty sure they were meant to be with more than two other people, though. "Did the professor say groups of three or four or three or four groups?" she asked. It didn't seem to matter, though. There were like...fourteen or so groups now.
Then a Slytherin girl approached them and asked to join, too, which of course Maddie agreed to. This was going to be awesome! With four of them, one from each house at that, surely this would be one easy group project! "Sure," she said. "I'm Maddie Kemp, by the way."

The first person to approach him was someone he knew, or at least he had met and introduced himself to. At Floreans…over the summer. “Hey…” Septimus returned before nodding. Thank Merlin for someone willing to join him. “Then we can work together.” And he wasn’t completely lost and missing a group to work with for the lesson. Just had to find a few more to add to their number to build the team the professor wanted. Something that didn’t seem so hard after all as a Gryffindor this time, Mr. Head Boy himself, had stepped up to them.
“Sure…sure you can.” The second year wasn’t about to turn down his help. “I’m Septimus,” the Ravenclaw introduced since they hadn’t really met before. And then Septimus heard someone clearing their throat nearby only to turn to see a young Slytherin there as she spoke up to them clearing any thought that she was going for someone else. “Nope…not at all.” It wasn’t like he had anything against her or anyone now in his group. And as long as all went well, he wouldn’t.
Maddie agreed and reminded him the newest newcomer didn’t know him either. “And I’m Septimus.” As for the puff’s question about the groups, he finally knew the easy answer to a question in this class. “Three to four groups I believe.”

Group activitities were definitely not his first choice as he prefered to work alone. But even he felt left out while everyone was making groups and...no one wanted him. That was how he felt, in reality they probably had not heard him asking if he could join one of the groups...which made it even more depressing now that he thought about it.
The third year let out a deep sigh and figured he had to take action by himself. He scanned the room and its groups and bit his lower lip as he willed himself to walk over to a group which he realised by looking at their uniforms were from all four houses. "Sorry...to break up the founders" he jokingly said. Nice one Dorian, start with a lame joke. "But i don't have a team yet, can i join?" pretty please, cause if not than he would be the only person left alone and he did not want that to happen.
Lydia smiled at her teammates. Turning to Maddie, she introduced herself. "Nice to meet you, Maddie," she said. "I'm Lydia Beckett."
Septimus seemed a bit brusque, but Lydia didn't mind. "Nice to meet you too, Septimus. I'm Lydia."
From behind, Lydia heard a familiar voice. She turned to see Dorian, who she'd met in the courtyard. He was looking quite anxious, not wanting to be left out of a group. Lydia completely understood that feeling!
"Dorian!" she said cheerfully. "Of course you can join...I mean, if no one else objects that is. Also, we were kinda like the founders, huh?" She smiled. She couldn't imagine any of the others not wanting to let Dorian join.
Lydia listened to Professor Curtains explain the nature of their activity. Oooh, this was going to be interesting. They had to come up with their own magic system? And create a world and characters for it? She'd never tried her hand at creative writing before, but really, how hard could it be? She'd certainly read a lot of stories. That was enough experience for actually writing one. Wasn't it?

"Okay, well the elements are earth, fire, water and air... yeah?" Bonza Bel already had water covered so...
Max turned to Hattie with excited wide eyes. "Heatwave Hattie the Hypnotic! I reckon Heatwave Hattie would have some really awesome solar powers. You could channel your energy from the sun and blast bad guys with scorching hot sun rays. And and and create light so bright that it distracts all the enemies so they can't see."
He looked between the pair of them, waiting for their reaction. And for any other ideas they had too because he was starting to feel like maybe he was taking over a little... oops.

Apparently, their group was growing rapidly in number. Vivian smiled at Emmalyn when Sky invited the younger girl to their group. She didn't have a problem with that, anyway. She would have been fine if the professor had grouped them at random. And when her Ravenclaw ickle Oli came to join too, Vivian couldn't turn her down. "Of course." She was in such a Head Girl mood right now, collecting younger students. "Always slot for another one," she winked at Patrick. The more, the merrier?
Was there a need to make introductions to the rest of the group? Vivian figured they already knew her. Or something. They did, right?
... Create a fantasy world of their own? Interesting. This would have been something first year Vivian Fairfield enjoyed doing. Making stories, using one's imagination. Suggestions, though? Hmm. She wasn't against Kye's suggestions about magical creatures. That would be so cool. "Is there a way we can involve some sort of crime mystery there?" Vivian fancied the mystery genre. It always seemed to leave her astonished.
"Any other suggestions, guys?" She addressed the rest of her group. Being shy at this point would be counter-productive. Vivian wanted to hear all their thoughts.

It was honestly so good to work in a group which was full of ideas. She loved these types of creative assignments, where she could work to her best ability. They were fun, and really allowed her to let her creative juices get flowing. They got her super inspired. That was the reason why she was doodling away. It made her brain work a bit better. She was aware she wasn't giving too many ideas, but she really did not want to take over too much. She wanted them all to have an equal go. Maybe she could do a super cool drawing to go alongside their ideas.
"Heatwave Hattie. I love it" And it was totally better than anything else that she would have come up with. "Your ideas are so good Max!" She praised with a smile. She knew it was good to be praised. "Mystic Max could....be do with air maybe?" She mused, trying to think how she could get his super hero involved in the elements. Andd.... could maybe... use air to like push people around" Her idea seemed a bit silly compared to Max's but at least it was an idea, even if it was a bad one.

Skylar grinned when the wifey didn't really ask to join but declared it. But of course, they didn't really have to ask each other; perks of seven years of friendship. "Of course," she beamed at Vivian and Nathan too, since they were partnered already. And another young girl (Ravenclaw) approached too, who it seemed knew Vivian?? How, Skylar wasn't sure, but Vivian was Head Girl so Skylar supposed it made sense for all students, regardless of house, to know her. Smiles for you, young one, "Welcome, welcome," she greeted of Olivia (though she didn't know her name. "I'm Skylar." In case Vivian hadn't filled her in on names.
Her gray-blue eyes flickered back over toward Emmalyn when she agreed to join her. Older students, maybe, but there was a handful of younger students as well. It was a healthy mix although no Gryffindors, strangely enough? She beamed though when the second year greeted the group. Yes, she would be a great asset, Skylar decided.
"The more the merrier," she noted of Patrick, echoing Vivian's sentiments it seems. How was he a third year already? Before she could ponder ages too much, Professor Curtains started to explain the task; creating a story?? UH?? Weird and to be honest, it was one of those things that Skylar would have preferred to do alone. She enjoyed writing - she'd been writing for the quill for a few years now - but she did it as an outlet. It wasn't something she did with a group, especially not one as large as this one. Not that she had a choice, really it seemed.
She bit her lip, listening to Nathan and then Kye and Vivian speak up. "What if we based it loosely on the realities of the horrors that have taken place at Hogwarts the past few years? I mean even though fiction is fantasy and made up, why couldn't there be some underlying truths to it? Which I feel like would probably tie in that crime mystery theme too?" Well, considering all but one of them in their group had been at Hogwarts at least a year, they must have known something, right? And the different perspectives about the happenings could definitely contribute to it being more fantasy based.

Patrick listened carefully as each person contributed to the conversation at hand. He was pondering each aspect that he too might be able to add to the story. He figured they should go all in as to possibly get as many points as possible from the assignment. He was with Skylar, win the house cup again this year. He didn’t want to see the end of their reign.
Blinking hard he considered the ideas at hand. “What if the whole world is set up and a person who isn’t supposed to see it suddenly sees it similar to Chronicals of Narnia, only, instead of walking through a wardrobe, they just walk right in the building they thought to be abandoned? And there are people inside it.” He was hopeful that his idea might contribute to the conversation and the world that they would have to create.

She had her parchment ready for notes, though she wasn't exactly sure what to write down yet. "I like the idea of a mystery." She jotted mystery down on her sheet "I don't know a lot about what has gone on the past few years, other than the paintings and crazy Dufftown weekend last year, but I think it's a great idea for a story." Plus, she could learn a lot about what had happened. "Wait, horror?" There had been horror? She was very interested in learning more.
She looked to the older students for more direction and a job of sorts. She knew she wouldn't be the most helpful with coming up with information about the past, but she could do other parts. Then she heard Partick's idea. "Oh, I like that. I know about Narnia! It could be like muggles accidentally stumble across the front gates and get inside. Like the enchantments and magic hiding the school doesn't work on them."
Juni was amused that she had ended up in the biggest group. HAHA how in the world did that happen. Not that she minded, but her social anxiety was on high alert. Yes she was trying to do better and meet more people and she supposed that this was the best way to go about it.
WIth a confident smile she joined the groups discussion. Thank goodness they chose a book series that she knew and liked. [b]”We have to have a evil queen, and battle though too.”[‘/b] She added. ”And not only humans but other magical creatures.” That was all she could think to add at this point. They had a big group with lots of people to bounce ideas off of each other.
Beth looked over to Daniel when he brought up a world where magic was restricted…”that, sounds like an interesting” was all she said before turning to look at everyone in their groups. ”if you think about it – a lot of books with magic and powers in them…well muggle ones, it’s a character that’s people are oppressed that ends up wielding power – they use that power to change the tide and make things just and fair” she paused…tapping her finger on her desk.
”…but I mean, the ones I’ve read the magic is misused and the main character trusts the wrong people and the war sort of starts over?” she shrugged, ”m-maybe instead of everyone having magic – everyone has the potential for it? Like…something in the areas where they live gives them the chance to be powerful…like, in the cities they harbor the power the rich and elite want the powers for themselves…” the ideas were spillint out like an uncorked bottle tipped on its side.
”and…and the magical folks always try to hide in plain sight, trying to save others from the elite, the ones with the ability to control them?....that kind of sounds like something muggles would write? Yeah? I mean, just look at the old Hunger Games books or those Red Queen stories?” she shrugged - that’d totally be a muggle thing.

Chloe leaned against Abra gently, brushing his shoulder with his as a sort of welcome to their group, and then she turned her attention back to the group. They had a LOT of people, all with different ideas and talents to bring to the group, which could make things very interesting.
It should maybe surprise her that Derf spoke up first with an idea, but it didn't. Derf was FULL of ideas, which was one of the most fun things about him. And this idea, all about creatures, was very intriguing. And a little troubling, but maybe only because Chloe wondered if she'd misunderstood the assignment. It wouldn't be the first time, since she was busy comforting Abra.
"I think... we have to create a magical system along with our story, and one that differs from reality in some ways. So if we have a Muggle encountering a jarvey, or going mad by a fwooper or finding a feather, or... a dragon egg! Or all those things, what's different about it from what's real?" It was the worst worst thing in Chloe's world to rock the boat and she sat on her hands to keep from throwing her arms around someone for a hug and reassurance that no one was mad at her. "Maybe, like Stas said, the feather lets Muggles see things that are invisible."
She was still glaring mildly at Reese's back, when Professor Curtains filled them in on assignment. Group work where they write a story with a system of magic. Together. Quinn's expression soured even more.
She gave Beth a look and folded her arms over her chest, clearly not happy. She didn't show her writing to anyone except Beth, and that included for group assignments. Suddenly she knew without a doubt this lesson hadn't been tailored for her. And with Reese storming off like he had...
"Sure," she said. Quinn slipped her quill and ink and parchment back into her bag. "Sounds great. Let's go with that." What she really wanted to do was just walk out of here, go sit in the library and read or copy books. She'd stay, but she was going to let the group write.
If Professor Curtains wanted to see her writing, he should not have made it a group activity.

Maddie listened to the back and forth round of introductions as their group quickly formed. It seemed as if everybody had said their name at least once, so that was out of the way. They were like old friends now. Well, kind of. Maddie smiled at the newcomer, Dorian, then turned toward the professor to listen to the introductions. Hmm...well, this was an interesting spin on History of Magic class. At least the activity seemed easy enough.
"I guess it doesn't matter now if it was groups of three or four or three to four groups," she said with a shrug. It hadn't seemed to bother the professor, so she guessed they should just move on and get started with the awesome group they have. "Umm, what about an alternate reality? It kind of gives us more freedom." She threw out a suggestion and waited to see if anybody else had any ideas.
In the meantime, she rummaged through her bag for a quill, some ink, and a fresh piece of parchment.
Excited, Daehyun clapped soundlessly, beaming at her idea. He liked where she was going with it, but now that they had some sort of plan for their own magical world, what about a plot? Did they even need to write that, as well? "Do we also write a story in this world? Characters?" Could they have star-crossed lovers? He refrained from voicing that thought, though. They didn't need to know that he adored the idea of star-crossed lovers.
He turned to Quinn, since both herself and Beth advertised that this assignment had been designed for the Ravenclaw, eager to see what she thought... except she didn't seem to be quite herself. He hadn't known her for long, but even he could tell she was more closed off than she usually was. "You okay?"
... were their ideas that bad that they'd upset her?
Quinn was still leaning back in her chair, arms folded across her chest. Her eyes followed the Professor's every move, but this wasn't her usual inquisitive, probing watching. Quinn was glaring. "I'm fine," she snapped, harsh and cold. "You okay?" She asked him in return, almost perfectly mimicking the pitch and tone he had used.
Beth looked over at Quinn and gave her the slightest nod – she wasn’t fast enough. Beth had wanted to curtail their conversation and head them in a direction away from Quinn and then Daniel asked if she was okay…he also made a good point about characters but – the poor dear was about to have his heart broken.
Beth, was still unconvinced that he didn’t like Quinn. Nothing short of a miracle would change her opinion. ”you think…I’ll write ideas down” Beth shrugged and glanced back at Daniel…”its best not to pester right now, we don’t want to make a scene” Beth whispered to Daniel and their other groupmates, and then for good measure the snakelet added ”Quinn’s my friend…she just needs space – for now lets work and I’ll write our ideas down?” she looked at each of them in turn a look between don’t ask and I’ll explain later when I can playing on her face.
”so…characters and plot, whose up for changing the game with our story? Maybe getting rid of the whole love-plot all together?” she asked as she looked at the list, ”except maybe friend and familial love? There are just, soooooo many stories too many even that are just romance related…in my opinion” she shrugged before adding ”or its not that in general…its that…I don’t know some stories seem to lean on romance like those muggle walking – CRUTCHES! And then you have stories that…yeah, they’re classics but they’re only about love like Romeo and Juliet” she paused before adding, ”which clearly, they needed a better plan so they both didn’t wind up dead…who in their right mind wants to find love only to have them die?” she shrugged rolling her eyes momentarily.
”I like the taming of the shrew far better…we need that, a character that’s witty and smart and has pith and and and…someone that can hold up on their own” the blonde wasn’t against love, no, it was used in many of the books she read, but sometimes to her - it felt overused.

Nathan took notes of each one of their suggestions in his group. He was nodding his head the whole time, agreeing that they should have a fictional story about something dark and mysterious.

"So what are the odds of survival for these muggles?" he asked the group. Nathan was interested to know. He wondered if one or more characters would probably die along the way trying to save themselves from getting out.
Oh, okay, he got the hint. It was one of those moments when a girl didn't want to talk, and he understood perfectly. He only mumbled a low "Sorry," before slumping down in his seat and looking away, deflated. Quinn clearly wasn't fine, so he wasn't going to push it.
Instead, he listened to what Beth was saying about most books focusing on romance - he wouldn't know. All the books he read were bestiaries and such, so he was going to listen to Beth's idea. "How about twins separated at birth? We could go all dramatic if one of them is a commoner, and the other one of the elites, taught all his or her life to treat the magic folk badly?"
... he was way into this whole thing. Maybe he could consider a career change.
