Time seemed like it would have to be so different on Mercury and he nodded, his mind somewhat wandering as he thought about tricking genies. "I wonder if people would age differently there." Not that anyone actually lived there. "Can you imagine living three months in the sunshine and three months under the moon... oh, wait." Did the planet even have a moon? Henry glanced down at his book again. "Mercury doesn't have a moon, does it?" And what was Char saying about it being heavy? "Yeah... that's weird, because it's the smallest planet, isn't it?" That sounded right. Maybe he should be writing this stuff down.

"Okay, just Mercury." She agreed happily and then pointed at the page they were on, indicating there was something about iron? He could do the hard reading. Aka the boring parts. She was gonna draw.

"Oh, no moons? That's kind of sad. I like the moonlight, its romantic." It was, just saying.

Brent shrugged. He wasn't that into Astronomy to really care which planet they chose. "Sounds good little bro," he said, and he clapped the younger Westwood on the back. It was good to hang out with the bro for a while. "So I guess we have to start listing cool facts about Jupiter." He reached into his bag and pulled out a fresh piece of parchment and got his quill ready to go. "I like that hurricane. The one that never goes away." It was pretty much boss to just stay there like that for all of time.

"What ya got, bro?" he asked.

Oh good, Brent wasn't going to argue about Jupiter! Which was good, because Kane had a million and one reasons why it was the BEST planet, but now he wouldn't have to worry about that. He'd just transfer all that goodness to the poster!

Ah, the Big Red Spot. That was definitely a good starting place. Kane smiled and nodded before adding to the list. "Well, it's HUGE. The biggest of all the planets. And made entirely of gas. You couldn't land on it if you tried," he added.

Henry glanced where Charlotte was pointing and he skimmed over that paragraph. "Basically a large metal ball of iron." Interesting. And yeah, he'd have to start writing this stuff down. As much as he thought he could just remember it, who was he kidding? They might as well have some notes to go off of for their poster anyway.

Pulling out a fresh piece of parchment, he started writing, trying to remember what they've already said and periodically glancing at the textbook:

"Moonlight is romantic," he agreed with a smile as he finished jotting down the last of the facts they had talked about and looked up at her. "But so is stargazing." And there were likely stars to be seen from Mercury. Stars to be seen from Earth too.

ANYWAY-Saturn! "Saturn it is!" All smiles and nodding in agreement here. Junia even pulled her paper closer and began jotting down the few facts Abey had provided for them and the few others had shared.

That was a pretty good start as far as she was concerned.

"I bet we could look that part up in our books! We should also note the colors for our poster and maybe even come up with a slogan worthy of Saturn's awesomeness." Yes, that.

"You want to get the supplies, and I'll do the researching?" Because Abey liked art just as much and he'd pick good paints and markers, and also because she knew reading was sometimes difficult for him and she didn't want him to feel bad about it.

POSTERS! Even though that revelation actually made sense and had been expected actually, what with all the art supplies in the room and the whole 'getting in a group and choosing a planet' thing, Abey was still flooded with relief that they would be getting CREATIVE and not just sitting and writing and reading things. It was always a worry when it came to Astronomy, because he didn't really know how practical the lessons could get. But APPARENTLY they used to be really super fun and even include spells. Either way, spells or posters were fine with Abraham Botros Jr.

Just PLEEEEASE no boring plain old no-art no-magic only-writing-down-theory lessons (ever).

Anyways. Junia was already ON THE CASE and talking a lot of sense actually. Like noting down the colours! For the artwork! AND ABEY GOT TO CHOOSE THE SUPPLIES!

"Okay!" he chirped at once, immediately abandoning his half-hearted attempt to reach for his bag to get out his textbook. And then, in the blink of an eye, he had slid down from the chair and under the table again, only to appear back on his feet again on the other side. Before hurrying off, he pointed at the picture of the solar system on the desk. Saturn in particular, because obviously actually.

"I'm going to get lots of yellows, and beiges, and golds, and maybe some browns, because it's kind of almost like it's in a sepia tone, don't you think?" That was a question actually posed to Junia, but Abey gave her no time to respond. "And actually I see blues and greys in here, too, do you see them? And just the palest shade of periwinkle, do you see?" He seemed not to notice having slipped right back into Arabic for the tail-end of that, for instead of acknowledging it, Abey just flashed Junia a bright smile and, without further ado, actually headed off to get some supplies actually.

And he returned a few minutes later, positively laden with THINGS.

"I made sure to get all those colours and everything, but there was so much choice I decided to get something in every colour, just in case!" Cue the big toothy grin. "And some black poster paper in case you wanted to make the background like space. I think that's what everyone is going to do. But WHAT if we made our poster like a GINOURMOUS Saturn, bigger than us even, and the Saturn IS the poster, and we could write our facts out like those lines of colour across the planet, or on the rings!" At this point, Abey finally paused for air, providing Junia a chance to get a word in edgeways should she want to take up the golden opportunity.

Look. CREATIVITY was where Abey could SHINE, and he was very excited to have the chance.

"Do you think we need to add anything else?" Henry glanced over their list. They had five things... well, six, considering the one fact was more like two. That was probably enough and it gave a fairly good summary of their planet.

Did Mercury have clouds? Henry had no idea and he casually flipped through his book again, skimming the text for any mention. Oh, there were a couple paragraphs on weather and atmosphere. "No clouds... but it gets really hot during the day and really cold at night. I guess if you can get past that, then the rest is clear and lovely for stargazing."

Brent copied down Kane's sporadic and spastic list of Jupiter's qualities. It seemed like a good list of things that were true but not presented in a boring kind of way. This gave Brent an idea. "So we need to come up with something cool. This can't be boring or anything like that," he told his brother. What they needed was... "We need some kind of catch phrase or cool slogan. You got any ideas?"

While he waited to see if Mr. Enthusiasm had any cool ideas for their poster, Brent tapped his quill against the parchment as he tried to come up with other facts for their list. Didn't it have something like fifty moons? Duuuude. That was a lot of moons!

She looked up as she heard a voice and smiled as she saw it was Kat. "Hey bestie" She murmured with a smile. She would love to pair up with her. "Of course! What planet should we do? Maybe Venus? I like Venus. It's the only planet named after a girl!"

Giving her bestie a grin. She was excited that Hattie was waiting be her partner. And we were thinking the same planet? Psychic twins? Maybe. " Venus is great it's my favorite planet." Yes, Kat had a favorite planet. Didn't everyone? If not they should.

Listening to what the professor was saying about the activity they were going to do. So they were going to use all of the those art supplies for something. It was a good thing that she had asked Hattie to be partner up. Hattie was great at the art thing. Kat could color, that was just about all she could do. She was pretty good at crafty things. "What kind of poster to you want to do?"

ArianaBlack 01-27-2017 05:55 AM

Since her Professor never said anything about the poster needing to be artistically accurate, Zoryn went ahead and colored her planet PINK. And she had grabbed some glitter while she was up for supplies too, so she dumbed it EVERYWHERE.... completely forgetting to add glue to it (but pfffft that wouldn't matter, right?).

So now she had a huge pink planet piled with unstuck glitter and she was DONE.

Sort of.

Still had to incorporate the facts. Hm.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeell..... It needed a title. Zoryn wanted to do that first. And naturally it'd need BUBBLE LETTERS!!! This was so much fun!!

U-R-A-N-E-U-S

*GASP* !!!

That wasn't right. Ah fudge flies.

NO WORRIES! She could fix it... Maybe. Errrrrrr.... The first year tilted her head a lot as she began to cross out the letters and... Uh. Maybe this was just a part of the process? It gave her poster some added pizzazz to say the least??? Hopefully it wouldn't knock her grade down too far... SHE WAS TRYING, OKAY!!??!

This was embarrassing. Kitty raised her hand kind of awkwardly. "If anyone needs another partner, I'm currently team-less. Otherwise that's okay, I can work alone too. But if anyone wanted me..." She let the sentence hang in the air, hoping she didn't sound desperate.

A lot was happening, and Rula found herself more interested in watching and listening and taking notes instead of answering the questions herself. Especially when some friction appeared between the professor and Rooney and Brian. Even if she didn't approve of the tones they used, their points didn't seem entirely wrong, at least to her.

But a group activity was starting, so it was time for her to focus on that. It seemed easiest to work with the person she was already sitting next to...though Elle was already directing her request to the rest of the room? Maybe she was just...trying to be polite by not assuming or something? Rula didn't know.

"I'll work with you, if you'd like." She wouldn't force it if she didn't want to though.

And then she heard someone else saying they didn't have a team yet, so Rula looked in her direction. "You can come join us if you want." If Elle didn't mind, but hopefully she wouldn't?

So far nobody had seemed interested to join her, but then also, Elle hadn’t heard from Rula yet either. Rula who’d apparently been just as quiet during all the debate and discussion as she had, but was still there. She knew that, just as she knew nobody had claimed her housemate either. Either way, she’d smiled when she’d turned to her and spoken. “Of course. Part of me felt like that’d be easiest anyhow. No moving around,” she replied, giving a smile to Kitty as the prefect joined their group as well. The more the merrier, really. Especially when they’d been tasked to create a poster of some sort.

She’d been listening to the groups nearest them, what planets they were working on, when she’d heard Kitty’s question. “Oh, no. I don’t think we’d picked one yet?” Unless she’d somehow tuned things out, but she didn’t think she had. “I’m open to any of them. Maybe Neptune?” She didn’t think any of the other groups were researching that one yet.

Paintbrush 01-27-2017 08:37 AM

Mars. He was obviously going to make a poster about Mars. And it would prove very difficult not add in an angry face and assortment of weapons to the picture, too.

Harvey settled for making the planet red and writing its name out in equally vivid red on top of the poster. And now to the facts.

Wait, did they have to be strictly scientific or did cultural significance also play a role here? Hmm... well, since it was all rather connected anyway, Harvey figured it wouldn't do any harm to include both. You couldn't have too much information, could you?

1. 4th planet from the sun
2. Named after god of war in ancient Roman religion and mythology
3. Atmosphere mainly composed of carbon dioxide
4. Agricultural guardian (as Roman god)
5. 2 moons - Phobos and Deimos
6. March is named after Mars (the god) and most of his festivals held in March too
7. Mars has similar landmass to Earth
8. Only 18 successful missions to Mars
9. Piece of Mars have fallen to Earth
10. Has tallest mountain and biggest dust storms in our atmosphere

Harvey circled each fun fact in red too, just to keep with the colour scheme. There. That should do it.

"Hmm. I could like do a picture of venus and we could write the facts around it" She mused with a smile. She was good at art, so that would be good. "And we can make it nice and bright. I like bright colours! But first we need to think of some facts about Venus to put on our poster" She mused, pulling a piece of parchment closer, and writing a title.

"Okay.... so. It's the 2nd planet away from the sun. That can be fact one"

Uranus, it is! "Okay..." Etta nodded, quickly scribbling that in her notebook before looking up at him, trying to remember what she knew about Uranus. "It's the seventh planet from the sun.... I think it has thirteen rings? Eleven inner and two outer?"

Carl grinned at Etta. "Yeah, I'm in the Common Room a lot of the time. How are you finding Hogwarts so far?" He asked. He could help her out if she was facing any difficulty... they could be friends?

The badger looked at her notes and nodded. "Yeah! Also, it has twenty-seven moons and it's made of ice and water and..." He trailed off, looking at his textbook. "Ammonia. And methane."

He looked up as Professor Salvatore asked for their attention. Making a poster! That was going to be fun. He had zero artistic skill, but the Professor had said that it was the creativity and knowledge that mattered so... "I'll go get the supplies!" He jumped up and went to the back of the classroom. He grabbed a few of everything and returned to their table. "Do you have any idea for the poster?" He asked as he shifted his things away so that the new supplies could fit on the table.

Henry figured they had enough facts so he spent the rest of the time just watching Charlotte work her magic with their poster. He was kind of mesmerized really. When she said she was good at drawing, she wasn't kidding, and their poster was really shaping up to be something to be proud of. Mercury even looked like an actual planet with all that realistic texture and everything. He would have offered to do the writing so she didn't have to do it all, but hers looked great and definitely went along with the style of the rest of the poster.

"No more space?" Hehe. Henry had to laugh a little at that. "I guess that's appropriate for our Astronomy poster then." And they had enough facts on there anyway.

"It looks great," he grinned. "We did an awesome job!" And he offered her a high five. That was appropriate for a job well done, yeah? So.. did they have to present these or something?

Colt beamed and always knew Janelle was a cool chick. They always got along just fine. His head girl on the other hand was a different story. We could space 'em out so it'd work!" It'd be tricky, but worth it if it came out correctly!

What do you think?"

In the meantime, Junia got to work cutting their poster into the desired Saturn shape, rings included.

anyone still need a partner? If not, that's cool too ^_^

Skylar had to admit it was quite amusing watching the Hufflepuff prefect and Ravenclaw prefect get all fired up in defense of their previous instructors. While she personally had only had the privilege of having Burbage one year and Flamsteed one year, some of her older classmates had Flamsteed for a few more years than that. It therefore took a moment for the third year to recollect her thoughts as she realized there was an activity assigned and it was creating a poster about a planet?! So first the questions they were asked were all rudimentary knowledge and now they were given an assignment that was most definitely basic.

And everyone had partnered up around her, which meant what? She guessed she could do this on her own. She knew Hattie was way better with the artsy stuff than she was, but Hattie had already partnered with Kat and well, it seemed an awful lot like everyone already had partners. And those who didn't have partners, seemed content in working on their own posters.

Sighing, she figured she ought to get to work herself lest she run out of time. First things first, to figure out what planet to write up her poster about. Peeking around at those around her, she spotted Saturn and Mercury and Venus and Uranus... even though there were only eight planets, she wanted to be different and not copy.

Everyone seemed to be doing planets found in outer space, but they neglected to realize they all lived on one of the planets and the Professor hadn't said they COULDN'T do that one, which was exactly what Skylar started to jot down notes about...

SPOILER!!: Notes

Planet Earth

- third planet from the sun
- only planet that contains life
- 75% water - only planet that contains liquid water
- atmosphere contains 21% oxygen
- it takes 365 1/4 days to complete the orbit around the sun

Hmm, she was relieved that she had already learned a few things about planets on her Muggle school but… It was still hard to make a poster and to think about a planet and to mention all the facts she knew! Was a textbook allowed?

After a while she looked satisfied down at the poster she had made and nodded to herself, this wasn’t that bad!

Now it was time to write down some facts she didn’t already had mentioned on the poster!

Quote:

• Uranis is the 7th planet from the sun.
• Uranus is the ancient Greek deity of the Heavens, the earliest supreme god.
• The planet was discovered by William Herschel.
• The blue color from the planet is the result of absorption of red light by methane in the upper atmosphere.
Sighing she dropped her quill and tried to think about more but she couldn’t think about anything else so she stopped working, this was good enough she decided.

Oh good, Elle had agreed to work with her, and Kitty was joining too. That worked out well. Rula grinned.

And now to decide on a planet! "Neptune is okay with me." She didn't really have a favorite planet or anything - well, except for Earth, obviously, since she lived on it - so she wasn't picky about which one they did their poster on. All of them were probably interesting in their own way.

"I'll go get the supplies for us," she said as she got to her feet and headed for the supplies table. Might as well go ahead and get all the stuff they needed so they could get started as soon as they had their notes done, right?

He wondered what his other teammates thought.

Annnd they had a suggestion. Janelle nodded as Colt suggested they work on Venus or Mars. "Two good choices", She replied. Actually, those would probably have been her first two choices. "Venus, I vote for Venus. That alright with you Noelle?". At that moment, the professor announced that the class would be moving on. They had to make a poster including all of the information they gathered.

Considering they had just begun considering their planet, time was of the essence. "Venus it is then......I guess." Janelle thought about what she knew about Venus. "So what do we know?", she said while looking at her partners. "Venus is the second planet from the sun and the closest one to earth..........I know it's the hottest planet of the eight. What are your thoughts guys?" While waiting for a response, Janelle flipped open her textbook to hunt for more details.

"It's great. Yeah.." Etta nodded, practically beaming. Hogwarts had been pretty fun so far, no doubt about that. She leaned forward, looking at the other boy. "How about you? Are you new? Or have you been here for a while?" All the questions.

.... BLINK. Poster? Etta sighed internally, because she lacked creativity of any kind. Or so she thought. She watched Carl bring all the necessary supplies, trying to figure out what kind of a poster they should make? "Something simple yet colourful?" She suggested, doubtfully. ... OHWAIT. "Uranus is also the fourth largest planetary mass in the solar system." Ahem. Just saying.

"Yeah we did!" Charlotte put her hand up to meet his high five, eyes twinkling. "I hope the professor thinks so too. Do you think we have to talk about them as well or just hand them in?" Char also wanted to ask Henry what he thought about the lesson, and about the interruptions and all of that, but she'd save that for later...

In the meantime she tidied away her drawing things and thought a little more about stargazing...

"That's great to hear!" Carl said, his smile widening. "I've been here since I was a First Year, so yeah I guess you can say it's been a while. Did you go to another school previously?" He asked in return. He liked hearing about what it's like studying magic outside of Hogwarts.

The boy nodded at Etta's suggestion. "Sure, simple and colorful." He added the fact she mentioned to their notes and read it over. It seemed like a good list! "I'll copy our facts onto the poster. Can you ummm draw Uranus, maybe?"

He took a blue poster board and a yellow marker and began to write, making sure to leave space for the drawing.

SPOILER!!: Facts about Uranus!
  • Uranus is the coldest planet in the solar system. Neptune is on average colder, but Uranus can reach the coldest temperature.
  • It is the seventh planet from the sun.
  • It has thirteen rings, eleven inner and two outer.
  • It has twenty-seven moons.
  • It is made of ice, water, ammonia and methane.
  • Uranus is also the fourth largest planetary mass in the solar system.

You got any ideas?"

While he waited to see if Mr. Enthusiasm had any cool ideas for their poster, Brent tapped his quill against the parchment as he tried to come up with other facts for their list. Didn't it have something like fifty moons? Duuuude. That was a lot of moons!

Kane tapped his chin as he thought. "OH! I know! All those stripes on the surface are like, made up of different gases I think. So we should make our poster striped too! Each fact can be on a different colored line. And maybe we can draw the hurricane and charm it to actually move! I don't know how to do that so that'll be on you, but that would be SOOOO cool, so get on that," he told him rather bossily. Brent was the older one so he definitely should know some fun artsy fartsy spells like that, right?

"Another fun fact is that it is named after the Roman equivalent of Zeus. So it's basically the ruler of all the other planets," he pointed out. HENCE why it was also the best.
