Once allowed inside the office, one of the first things you may notice is the sudden drop in temperature. Though there is a fireplace resting along the back wall of the room, Professor Draper prefers the cold, thus the fireplace will most likely remain unused all term. And if the cool air wasn’t the first thing to draw your attention, perhaps you've found Merlin sitting on a cushion beside the Professor’s desk.

As for the room itself, aside from the seats meant for student visitors and the few lamps that light the room when it’s dark out, most everything is made of wood. The office is quite simplistic. Professor Draper doesn’t see the need in excess or clutter. Instead, preferring simplicity and believing in minimal decor. He does, however, keep a few journals on a shelf behind his chair, along with a book or two sat on his desk at all times.

Best get comfortable on your own, the Professor probably won’t offer you anything while you’re here.

OOC: Please only post here if you have been invited in and have posted in the waiting area first.

Levitating the stump in before he, too, stepped in, Paul chuckled good-naturedly. "Why, hello, James! You're another grounds buddy, with me! I'm just over in the Greenhouses!" he smiled and set the stump down and sat right on it.

"I just came over to say...well, welcome! And that I got you a gift!" he patted the stump. "I thought it would be nice for your office..." he glanced around at the decor. "It looks like it goes all right with your color scheme!" He commented. "And...it's covered in moss because moss is LIFE and I wanted to give everyone a small piece of life!" Did James get it?? Paul was beaming all over the place! "Now..where do you want it?"

He stood up and placed his hands on his hips, trying to imagine the BEST place for said stump to go. Hmmmm. What about next to James' desk? Or...near the door? He didn't want anyone to TRIP on the thing!

"You have quite the cozy set up, James!"

The stump. It was being moved inside James’ office.

…..

Why.

He held the door open for Poncho Man, still eyeing the stump all the while. Would there be an explanation because James wasn’t about to ask incase it really was meant for a kumbaya session. But instead of an explanation, he was met with exuberance. And lots of it. Another grounds buddy? Somehow, James wasn’t as thrilled. ”Oh, how… lovely.” He couldn’t have picked anyone he would’ve been less excited to share the grounds with. Though that creepy, crazed lady would be a close second.

After having followed the Herbology Professor inside, he gave the man another look up and down. Perhaps the neighborly thing to do here was offer the man something to eat or drink. But James wasn't neighborly.

... A gift? James liked— No. He couldn’t possibly be meaning that… stump. Who in their right mind gifted a person with a STUMP!? ”How very thoughtful,” he really was trying to be on his best behavior. You had to give him that much. ”My color scheme… Yes.” Everything out of the man’s mouth was more ridiculous than the last. ”You can set it over there,” he pointed to the VERY FAR BACK RIGHT CORNER of the room. ”The corners get rather lonely.” and they’re mostly out of sight. Maybe Merlin could use the stump as some sort of scratching post.

Also, someone had to wipe that goofy grin off the man’s face before James went and did it himself. It was utterly unsettling. ”Cozy?” Any coziness that was a result of his set up was entirely coincidental and unplanned for. ”I don’t like clutter,” was his explanation. ”Though, I also do not plan on spending too much time in here.” He’d rather be outside, honestly. Though… If Poncho Man was lurking around out there… Maybe he’d have to change his mind.

kayquilz 01-05-2016 05:40 PM

Paul waved his wand and sent the stump to the corner of James' office. He rubbed his hands together. "Ahh...there we go! Now you don't have such a lonely corner anymore!" He smiled and put his wand away.

Clutter.

Paul didn't mind clutter, but he also didn't not..non-clutter either. It was all how he was feeling in the moment. He took a seat, without being asked, but he was sure he was welcome to have a seat, of course. "Ahh...well that makes sense. You sound a lot like my partner, Milton. Maybe that's why I want to be friends! Who knows--" Paul was rattling away. Poor James.

"So..you spend most of your time outside, then?" he asked. "I will spend MORE time outside this term than last term, since I was allowed to bring my dog with me this time around!" And Charles needed lots of walking and stuff. Paul has played frisbee with him just this morning, and worn himself out quite a bit. "Have you become acquainted with Justine yet? The groundskeeper? He's a funny ole' chap as well! Very friendly! Ah, us outside men." Paul smiled and sighed contently.

James was accustomed to early wake-ups and his time at Hogwarts would be no exception to this routine. This being said, he was already sat inside his office, leaning back in his chair with a book in hand a mug of hot coffee on his desk. Black, no sugar. Just the way he liked it. Though there wasn't a knock on his door, he did hear the outside door open and shut meaning only one thing: a visitor. Who would be up so early on a Saturday morning? He had no clue. But he was in a much better mood today than he had been in ages so whoever it was made a good choice.

He did not, however, bother to stand up from his chair. Instead he flicked his wand at the door which then in response swung open. "You may enter," he said before taking a long sip of his morning brew.

OOC: You may now post inside Professor Draper's office ^^

Having only had a chance to move into the room, her thoughts of waiting and being nosey were shot down as Professor Draper opened his office door and called her inside. Awesome. With a bounce in her step and a slight tinge on her cheeks still present from her run, Marsha moved quickly across the waiting area to the office door.

Peeking around said door, the red-headed Lion grinned at her new Professor. ”Good morning.” With a skip in her step she moved fully into the office to see him. ”I just wanted to come and say hello… and introduce myself and tell you how much I’m looking forward to your lessons.” And maybe see if you want an extra pair of hands with the Creatures… but that would come.

She took a few more steps towards his desk but didn’t sit down until she was told to.

How very wonderful. Emphasis on sarcasm. Though James had referred to the corners as lonesome, he was very aware that corners did not get lonely. He couldn’t speak on behalf of the man who stood before him, however, because Paul Myers looked as though he had just ended world hunger. It was a stump, not a Nobel Peace Prize. Through gritted teeth, James smiled back. ”Wonderful.”

He was, welcome to have a seat, but James was hoping this would be a standing around sort of ‘get to know you’. Because well, in all honesty, James had no desire to continue this ‘get to know you’ any further than it had already progressed. See, James felt as though he had gotten to know the Poncho-Wearer well enough to formulate a concrete opinion. The damage was done, recovery was futile. Yet the man was still going.

As much as James didn’t want to encourage anymore conversation, he walked behind his desk and sat down in his own chair. Apparently this was going to take longer than he would’ve wanted. Luckily, James Draper had become very good at tuning out parts of conversation that bored him. In this case: all of it. Though he pretended to listen, nodding at all the appropriate times. Forcing himself to look attentive, almost. Though he still had to show a little disinterest in hopes that the hippy would get the point some time or another.

Or not.

James nodded, knowing quite well that he actually did have to pay attention to this part, incase Paul ever allowed him the opportunity to speak. Which again, was doubtful. There was one thing, however, that caught James’ attention and that was the mention of a dog. ”Ah, you have a dog?” James took note, deciding that it’d be best not to tell the man that his own dog was currently sat in the barn. Circe forbid the man suggest they have a doggy-playdate or something as ridiculous as that. ”Are you keeping him in your office, then?” As far away from Merlin as possible. James could also bet that this doe-eyed hippy had one of them frufru pups, those that were carried around in purses and got their nails manicured.

As for the groundskeeper, James shook his head. ”I haven’t, though I assume he’s rather busy preparing now that the children have arrived.” Did Paul Myers gift the groundskeeper with a stump as well? He had no comment on the “outside men” thing though. No. James REFUSED to be grouped with this loon. ”Any news on the… new divination Professor?” That was what she was teaching, yes? She had made his list as well, so it was important to know her whereabouts. Two people James was trying to avoid here and one of them would be living right down the street. ”She’s in the castle, correct?” He was really, REALLY hoping here. That the smelly tent he had passed on his way down early today was NOT hers. Fingers crossed. And everything else crossed as well.

That was the advantage to early mornings. Even the air had a quiet sort of chill about it. Made recognizing visitors very easy. On busy afternoons, the sound of the door wouldn’t have traveled into his office. But luckily, it was still quiet enough to hear. 8 am was early for some, after all. Which is why he wasn’t sure who he’d be faced with this morning. A fellow Professor would have surely knocked… And he had pegged the students to be late-risers. They were all a load of troublemakers from what he had seen so far. And trouble never woke up early.

So he was curious, though he didn’t have to be for much longer as the incoming student didn’t waste a second before bouncing inside his office. Eager. Very eager. ”Good Morning, Miss…” he looked at her expectantly waiting for her name as he hadn’t bothered to learn any thus far. He took a long sip of his coffee, trying to brace himself. Patience. This required patience. Though he would be lying if he said he didn’t somewhat appreciate her… passion. ”Noted,” he even gave her a tiny bit of a smile. Again, a rare occurrence. ”And as you should be, I have a lot of plans for this term.” None that he would be willing to divulge just yet, as he had to keep some sort of suspense to brew interest.

He leaned back in his chair confidently, ”What are you doing up so early? Shouldn’t you be sleeping in? Enjoying the few days before classes begin?” He was so very curious to see what her intentions were here. Though… She looked as though she had just come from a run.

”Hanover.” Sha supplied quickly as he greeted her. ”My name is Marsha Hanover, though most people call me Sha.” She nodded her head as she continued to walk over to his desk and when he didn’t tell her not to sit down, made herself comfortable in one of the chairs opposite him at the desk. One leg slipped over the other as she perched on the edge of the chair… and she looked tiny. It was huge.

Beaming wide at him, she tried not to bounce on the seat. Seriously, she did try so she noded her head happily instead as he said her interest was noted. ”I can’t wait. I love creatures and animals… and although I’m only just becoming a third year, our Professor in my first year allowed me to join in a few of his lessons when I could. Last year, I wasn’t allowed as the class was being led by one of the Centaurs… but now that I’m a third year, I’m definitely going to be here as I’ve chosen it as one of my electives… and I would really like to work with Creatures after I leave Hogwarts too.”

She paused for breath, getting excited about filling the Professor in with how much she loved animals and creatures AND how much she would help him if he let her. In fact, I spoke to Professor Thomson about my love of creatures and how I wanted to study them at University and continue to work with them and he said that I should start to keep a journal on the animals I have helped to look after and what I have done, etc., and I’ve been keeping that log since then.” She grinned at him… but wondered if she was not giving him TOO much information. Blushing slightly she paused and added a softer ”Sorry, I get a little bit passionate.”

Shaking her head, Marsha smiled. ”No, I don’t really like lying in bed too long. It’s a waste of my day.” She smiled at him. ”I’m currently in training, so I do my workout and my run in the morning before classes, I’ve just finished now and I was on my way back to the castle to have a shower before breakfast… when I thought I could maybe talk to you first and then talk to some of the Creatures? I’m missing my horse Chestnut already even though it has only been a few days.” And she was doing it again… talking too much.

brb cryin'

Paul got comfortable, even if James didn't look comfortable himself. Maybe he was just an uptight sort of fellow! That was perfectly okay! He was a little thirsty, too, but he wasn't going to ask the man to offer him a drink. He would wait patiently!

"I do! He's a white Lagotto Romagnolo...so he's very big." He grinned. "Big and fluffy...his name is actually Charles Fluffington!" he nodded. "He needs walks...and lots of love and affection." He loved his dog! "Milton and I have three more at home; a beagle names Shirley, a golden-doodle named Bugsy, and a collie named Zelda." Ahem. "We have a lot of space..ugh. I just love dogs so much!" He was getting SO excited he was trembling a bit. "Yes yes, he's with me in my office."

And ah..he brought up the Divination professor...Paul averted his gaze, his chest...feeling all tight again. "She...is living in a tent. On the grounds. I visited her earlier and..." he sighed. "It makes me wonder...I.." he just didn't UNDERSTAND. "I just get a bad feeling when I'm around her...and I feel bad, because I hope she feels just as welcome and wanted as you all do..but sweet MERLIN."

Paul blushed.

”Miss Hanover,” he nodded only repeating it so that he could keep it placed in his head. Otherwise he might’ve accidentally called her “500 Miles Per Hour” because that is how fast and eagerly she spoke. And it was starting to get very exhausting, very quickly. He also tried to keep note of her first name and her preference with “Sha”, though he would not be needing that last one. He was starting to develop a very bad habit of nicknaming those he came across. It was starting to get rather unhealthy. At some point he was going to let one slip and it’d all be over.

He supposed he ought to have offered her a seat, but why did it matter when the lot of them would sit without being asked anyways? And she did take a seat, so that only confirmed the thought. Offering wasn’t necessary. So hopefully she wouldn’t mind the fact that she wouldn’t be offered any treats either, James wasn’t one of those pansy Professors that did that. If she wanted pansy she could stop by Santa’s place or the Poncho Man’s. Both equally distasteful.

And there she went again. Miss 500 Miles Per Hour. He leaned back in his chair, listening. For the most part. ”Have any particular creature you’re interested in? Or just the general lot of them?” Surely he’d be able to put this one to good use. She was eager enough, why not harness all that energy. James had a few ideas.

And there she went again. Like a Roadrunner….. A “little bit” passionate, she said. Right. James had a hard time keeping his face neutral and his expression probably mirrored his concern for this girl’s sanity. Did she ever stop for breath? ”Ah, Professor Thompson sounds like a smart man,” James nodded though he most definitely surpassed that intellect with his own, he was sure. He nodded behind him, to the several journals stacked on the shelf, ”I used to keep journals as well,” he gave her a SMALL grin, deciding that once you got past all the words, this one wasn’t absolutely terrible. ”If you ever want to exchange…” James couldn’t promise he’d read through her entire journal as if it was anything like her speaking was then Merlin help them both, but he could take a peek. Give her suggestions.

He was thankful for the pause in her speech, as short as it felt, but again lifted his head as she went into more detail. Roadrunner most definitely. ”In training?” he inquired, letting his curiosity get the best of him. Though he was sure to regret asking later. She spoke too much and now he was prompting it.

The more Paul got comfortable, the more James got uncomfortable. Not that he would show it because he was still very much his cool, confident self. Just… With a twinge of annoyance plastered all over his entire face. Was Paul thirsty? Good. Because James wouldn’t offer the man anything to drink. Maybe that would be enough of a cause to leave the office. Though, a man could only dream.

…. And there he went. Did James ask for the pressing details of the matter? No. He was just simply confirming that the Banjo Man had a dog. A simple yes would’ve sufficed. But of course, he was given the entire preface, prologue, author’s acknowledgements, backstory, and the epilogue. Wonderful. James pretended to listen the entire time. Though he was actually eyeing the log that was sat in the far corner of the room. Who gifted someone with a log? It was ridiculous. As was the man sitting right in front of him. ”Milton has quite a lot to deal with,” he offered. Talking about Paul and not the dogs. The dogs were the easy part. The banjo strumming hillbilly, that took work. James almost pitied this Milton character, but only almost as the man brought it upon himself. Poor choice. Not his problem.

Though it sort of was his problem now as the problem was sat right across his desk.

And speaking of problems….. ”She… What?” No. Yet another thing gone wrong this term and classes hadn’t even begun yet. Between Shrieking Santa at the feast, Nana’s appearance, reckless food fights, the hippy in his office, and now the hag on the grounds… He was living a nightmare. Hopefully the children wouldn’t be completely unbearable. He needed SOME sort of sign that he had made the right choice by taking the job. ”She smells.” There. He said it. Someone sue him. ”But as long as she keeps her tent where it is… I’m not going anywhere near it.” Of course Banjo Paul went and payed her a visit. Wonder if he gave HER a stump too.

kayquilz 01-06-2016 06:14 PM

Pffffft. Paul rolled his eyes and snorted. "Don't get me started on that...he takes on a lot and then, yes, has to deal with it all." But Milton liked to stay busy, so...as long as the man was happy, Paul was happy.

The Herbologist didn't want to be mean about the hag..but he sighed. "She does smell...quite a bit." Sigh. He felt bad for admitting it. "But some...people just smell naturally and...yeah. I actually am a little afraid to let the children have class with her...she seems harmless so far but..." he shivered. His mind was roaming...but should one of the professors..y'know, attend the Divination lesson with the students? Just to be SAFE? Paul would volunteer if he had to..

Hmmmph.

He was quiet for a long time, lost in own thoughts, before he remembered he was visiting someone.

Right.

"Ah--sorry--" he blinked and shook his head. "I..got lost in my head," he said with a smile. "I should get going, James." He stood up rather suddenly, his mind not in a good place right now despite the smile on his face. The safety of the students had his chest tightening, and his worry spiking up.

Don’t get him started? Sweet Circe, that was the FIRST stroke of brilliance that Poncho Paul had uttered since the moment James had come across him. Though of course, whether or not James prompted the man, there was sure to be some unnecessary explanation that followed. Ah yes, James was right of course. He always was. The younger man decided not to comment further. He honestly did not care about this Milton bloke at all. Nor did he care much for the man sat across from his desk, but alas there was only so much a person could do.

Some people smell naturally? This man really was a hillbilly.

James deadpanned. For a brief moment. Ahem. ”But I’m going to steer clear of her path,” James nodded finishing out Poncho Paul’s sentence. Though if the lady really was a hag, they ought to watch the children carefully. Incase of danger.

”It was very nice to meet you,” James shot STRAIGHT UP out of his chair. He wasn’t even going to pretend to be disheartened that the man was leaving so soon. It took long enough. James had been attempting to send the man away since the moment he entered. Ahem. ”Thank you again for the… welcoming gift.” If a stump could even be called that. He moved over to hold the door open.

If Sha only knew the thoughts running through Professor Draper’s mind, she would love the nickname Miss Roadrunner or Miss 500 Miles Per Hour… but alas, she didn’t know that she had been granted nicknames by the man… so she would have to wait for him to slip up to make any form of comment on it.

A favourite. Creature. Are. You. Kidding. They were all amazing, how on earth did ANY sane person expect Marsha Hanover, animal lover, to choose? ”No, not really.” She replied, shaking her head and making her ponytail bounce. ”I have loved every creature I have come into contact with so far. We fed and hand reared Griffins and baby dragons in my first year… and I have two fairies, a horse and a cat of my own. We have stables at home so I’ve been working with animals since I was little… my Great-Aunt is a Dragon Expert!” HOW COOL WAS THAT?

Eyes going wide, she BEAMED at him. ”Really? I would love to! Thank you so much.” Even if he didn’t read everything of hers, she would read everything of his. Any experience and tips would be welcomed. Surprisingly, her notes on her Creature Care were accurate, concise and documented. They weren’t lengthy as she usually wrote on parchment before transcribing into her journal to make sure that she didn’t waffle. Professor Thomson had informed her that they were serious journals to keep and you wanted to be proud of them when it came to submitting your applications after Hogwarts. It was the best advice she had been given to date.

She nodded her head, unable to feel a small iota of pride seep through as she answered his query. ”Yes! I got picked to be on Great Britain’s Youth Athletic’s team. I’m a runner. Long distance mostly, but I’m trying to pick up my sprinting times to see if I can diversify.” She grinned at him, unsure if a new Professor would be impressed with that or not - but she had Professor Airey’s consent and permission which was what mattered…. for School purposes anyway. ”As I’m here and can’t be at the training sessions all of the time, I need to keep detailed logs of my training to show my coaches when I do go back.” She nodded once again, happy that Professor Draper seemed nice and like he was going to let her help with his Creatures… the Hogwart’s Creatures? Whichever way, Creatures.

James wasn’t planning to let his nickname game slip anytime soon, unfortunately. He was playing careful for now. Though he did have to congratulate himself because Miss Roadrunner was quite the discovery.

Ah, no then? No favorites. That was fine. He could work with that. Though he stopped listening after her ‘No, not really’ everything else felt like unimportant details. He was right, of course. All unimportant, to him anyways. He had worked with many dragon experts, nothing that would’ve impressed him. Good for her Great-Aunt though. Did James have one of those? A Great-Aunt. It was foolish at that point. Why call them a relative at all if they were that distant of a family member? Silly. He waited politely until Miss 500 Miles Per Hour stopped running her mouth—which took AGES, by the way— before continuing his own train of thought. ”I’m sure if you come to me later on in the term once I’ve established some more order around here,” not to say that he hadn’t already established order. There were just a few more things that he needed to attend to first. The first Saturday of the school year was much too early to make proper decisions. ”I can find some extra work you can do around here, build up your resume maybe?” And make his life a whole hell of a lot easier. Was she interested? He raised a brow, tilting himself forward, ever-so-slightly.

Er… On second thought, maybe he should’ve waited before offering her the journal exchange. Though the thought was already said and she had already processed it in her mind, her mouth running at 500 miles per hour with her thoughts on the matter. Definitely should’ve waited. But alas, the mistake was already made. ”Anything on the shelf behind me, fair game. Though, I ask you return them within a timely manner.” If she could read as fast as she spoke and processed, then they wouldn’t have a problem. He didn’t care whether or not she decided to read through his journals, but James thought they were very interesting selections. Of his own time at Hogwarts, whilst serving military in the Brunei forests, and then his own years of explorations within Asia afterwards. And if he did say so himself, his commentary was O-level entertainment. Worth a good laugh or two. Though that may have been his own confidence speaking. Ahem.

And remember that time he said he’d regret asking about her personal life? Yeah. He regretted it. Spot on. Again he only listened to her first few comments before graciously tuning the girl out. Still he nodded because looking attentive meant he had to play the part. He didn’t often do this to students, but sweet Circe this one said too much and he was growing tired. ”Very impressive,” hardly. But it was ironic. Miss Roadrunner was actually indeed a roadrunner. How is it that he was always so spot on? Grinning smugly to himself, he took a small sip of his coffee before letting his gaze return to the over anim

The gift? Oh, right. The stump. "No problem...I thought it was quite nice for an office space...it'll make a good impromptu seat..." he winked in James' direction. His hand was resting on his chest because he could practically feel his anxiety spiking right now...

GUUURR!

"I'll see you around, friend!" And with a wave, he slipped out of James' office, closing the door gently behind him.

Luckily for Ms. Alisa Denaker, James Draper prided himself on not being a normal however-many-year-old. Thirty three, if that detail was of any importance. Which it wasn't. What was of importance was that Professor Draper was sat inside his office, already leaning back in his chair with black coffee sat ready on his desk. He was seizing the day. Writing down some scattered notes for future lessons, enjoying the quiet that the morning had to offer.

Mornings meant he was in a good mood. Fortunately for Ailsa and James both.

As he lifted his quill from the parchment in front of him he heard a knock on the door. Ah? Who could it possibly be? Seven in the morning was not a very popular time, however, many of his visitors had been of the early-rising variety. Had word somehow gotten out that James was more chipper at this point in the day? Hopefully so.

The Professor didn't bother to flick the door open with his wand, however, with eyes still on his notes he called out loud enough so that his visitor could hear, "Come in," hopefully it wasn't that wretched Poncho Man again. James had enough of him to last an entire three years at this school.

Ailsa jumped slightly at the window when the professor's call brought her back from her little reverie about the spider.

"Happy hunting, little guy," she said in the general direction of the crack into which the arachnid had disappeared. "And you," she added to the little fly buzzing against the other side of the window pane, "be mindful to avoid webs, OK?"

Goodbyes said, she slowly opened the professor's door and slipped into his office.

"Professor Draper?" she inched closer to his desk before taking a seat and fidgeting slightly. She suddenly wondered if she should have worn her school robes as her Charms professor seemed to prefer but she'd just have to hope that Professor Draper saw the sense in her weekend outdoors preference of canvas trousers with a durable flannel shirt.

"I'm Ailsa," the slip of a girl held out a hand in greeting. "I know I'm just a first year and all but I was wondering if you, um, needed any help?" She was nervous and her voice betrayed it. "I'm pretty good with norm--" she stopped herself with a thoughtful look before continuing. "I was going to say I'm pretty good with the normal animals on our farm, but I guess it's normal for magical creatures to be magical, isn't it..." The girl trailed off for a moment.

"Even if it's just mucking stalls, it'd be nice to be around animals here, like I am at home," a small smile broke through. "And they always seem to like having me around too."

…. James had nothing more to say. No words. None.

Luckily Poncho Paul shortly ended his babbling and finally got up from his chair. James was still waiting with the open door. Almost there. Just two more steps. Silently, he willed the hippy!man to step closer and closer until the man was finally out of the door and SWEET CIRCE. Only took long enough!

Finally with the door shut and Poncho Paul out of the way, James walked back to his desk—scoffing at that horrid stump in the corner along the way—and took a nice long sip of his coffee. Of course it had gone cold by now.

He rolled his eyes.

James didn’t bother looking up from his parchment, still as the young girl made her way into the office. There were a few things he could already tell by the way she entered. One, she was shy. Two, she wasn’t one of those that waited to be offered a seat. And three, he hadn’t decided whether or not he liked her quite yet. Though, time would soon tell. James tended to make those decisions very easily. ”Ailsa,” he nodded still jotting a few things down. ”Do you have a surname, Ailsa?” Finally he looked up at the girl, surveying her for just a second as she held out her hand. He of course put his quill down instantly and offered his own.

James appreciated the handshake. So far, he wasn’t completely disappointed. Though he wasn’t at all fond of her choice of clothing. She did know that Hogwarts followed a strict dress code, yes? It was the weekend, however, so he didn’t mention it. Not unless she did end up getting on his nerves, which surely would happen. It had become a trend. He was almost expecting every knock on his door as another disappointment.

First year? Noted. It was really the only useful piece of information she had offered thus far. James catalogued it in his head for alter. ”Ah, another eager beaver,” he commented, offering her a friendly nod in acknowledgement. He didn’t often smile, but this was the next best thing. Alright? At least he was playing friendly. And then she started rambling. James didn’t care for rambling. So he let her stumble with her words, and feigned interest all the while. Another child raised on a farm. Where the heck did Hogwarts get their kids from anyways? The whole lot of them were raised on a farm, it seemed.

”I can’t say I’ve got any jobs that need to be done yet,” it was only the beginning of the term for crying out loud! Did people not think he had prepared for student arrivals!? Sweet Circe. He glanced over at Merlin who had just brushed his head against James’ leg. Giving the dog a scratch behind the ear, James looked up at the first year once more. He hadn’t come up with a good enough nickname for this one yet. But with time, one would reveal itself. ”But I know for a fact that I’ll need some student help a little later into the term.” Scooping up the dung was a job James wouldn’t mind sharing.

”If you want, you can leave me your name and house—“ with a flick of a wand, he summoned some spare parchment and offered it out to her. ”And I can be sure to call on you when I need the extra hands.” How did that sound? Was she on board?

And then his blasted curiosity got the better of him again. ”Tell me Ailsa, what animals do you have on your farm back at home?” Why did he constantly provoke more rambling when he knew he wouldn’t care for it anyways? Maybe it was in hopes that one day one of the students would impress him. But for now, he silently cursed himself for the question as he leaned back in his chair and took a silent sip of his black coffee once more.

"Denaker, sir. Ailsa Denaker." There was a pause and then... "The non-food-throwing Denaker," she added just in case Professor Draper had any confusion between Ailsa and her cousin.

The little slip of a girl settled into the chair a bit more comfortably and studied the professor in the same way she'd studied the zebra spider in the antechamber. She hadn't figured there would be anything that needed doing just yet and simply nodded when the professor confirmed it.

Tempted as she was to put him off as simply mean, the way he automatically responded to the Great Dane, and, more importantly, the way the Great Dane obviously cared about the professor, told Ailsa that however brusque this man might be he was about as far from truly being mean-spirited as she was. Animals knew.

The redhead would simply allow her professor to play at being a gruff old man until he tired of it. Which, if some of the old farmers near home were any indication, would probably be sometime around the heat death of the known universe. But that was his choice if he wanted.

When the parchment appeared she was ready, pulling the worn fountain pen from her shirt pocket. While the outside had clearly seen rough use from having spent decades in her grandfather's pocket before it had been handed to her, a keen eye might notice that the nib had been, and continued to be, immaculately kept as she signed, "Ailsa Denaker, Ravenclaw" in a deep green ink.

And then he asked about her farm. She couldn't stop her face from lighting up a little as he gave her the inroad. "Mostly highland cattle, though mam insists on a few sheep because she likes to knit," she paused here for a moment before deciding that a farmer shouldn't shy away from what they do, "and for some variety in meat we get of course. And then there are the animals you end up needing because you have animals." she laughed a little. "For us that's Raq and Ci, the collies, and the barn cats to keep rats out of the feed." She left it there, figuring that he really didn't need to know about all the wild things that lived in their pastures like the badgers (which really were just like Kenneth Grahame had suggested) or even the occasional adder (which really did not deserve the fear everyone had of them). The owls, of course, went without needing any mention.

Ailsa returned to studying the professor, hoping he wouldn't find her family's little farm too pathetic given the sorts of creatures he likely saw every day. It had been a good question to ask, she thought. Good way to suss out whether she actually knew about animals or was merely one of those girls who thought they did because their daddy had bought them a horse or something.

Denaker. He would’ve taken a mental note of the name, but eh. Effort. What she said next, however, had him wonder. ”Is there a food-throwing Denaker I should know about?” and add to my list, he wanted to add he raised his brows. Now she had his interest. Truly a tough feat to pull.

James watched quietly as the girl signed her name. And once she was done, he took the parchment and rolled it up, tucking it into a drawer for his safekeeping. He would’ve just disposed of it, but he would need some help cleaning the stalls at some point. And bathing the hippogriffs. And y’know, maybe he ought to enlist some more student help. There was a lot more to be done than he had given thought to. So yes, keeping this information was good. Good thing he was always two steps ahead.

He knew he had done it once her face did that thing. Sweet Circe. He was going to bite his tongue next time. He probably ought to have been listening to her whole speech, but she was wearing him out. He needed to make some more coffee or something. All mundane creatures,” he noted. ”A muggle farm, I presume?” Or did her family just prefer managing nonmagical creatures? Because even though he was only half listening, pretty sure he didn’t catch any worthwhile ones in her description.

Also, was she confused or was her face always like that?

Couldn’t he just have one bloody hour to finish up grading these papers? It wasn’t like there were many stacks yet, but if people kept bothering visiting every thirty minutes the stacks would surely grow to an impossible amount by the end of the year and they would all receive T’s. Actually, that didn’t sound like an awful idea. Hm.

He waited for the knock, quite annoyed with how many times the boy choose to do so… But at least he knocked. Couldn’t say the same for SOME people. COUGH. COUGH. COUGH. SANTA CLAUS. BACKPACK BOY. Cough.

After one long sip from his mug, James flicked his wand at the door causing it to open just a bit. ”Come in,” he called from the inside. This better be good.

And if it was Poncho Paul again, James was giving him back the stupid stump.

OOC: You know the drill. I mean, uh, you can post in the office now!

Well Dante heard the 'Come In' and in he went right into his cold cold office. Now Dante was thinking he just liked the look of a fireplace in his office. Bet the guy was unmarried with his cold heart. Hehe. Anyway besides it being colder than Dante would like and he would know living in the dungeons for five years. Though it is warmer than people think. If not we would complain. Dante plopped himself on one of the seats that looked like their were for guests ad made himself comfortable as he could.. If enough trips into professor's offices and you notice things.

Like this guy had a dog. Which Dante was surprised. Took him for more of a cat person.

"Took you for more a cat person Professor"

His real questions could always wait or you know never happen depending on how much fun he was having.

"And is that fireplace just for show?"

"Weren't you at the feast?" Ailsa was beginning to decide that the professor's detached demeanor was more than an act. "The girl who dumped mashed potatoes all over a couple of Gryffindors was my cousin, Haddie." She probably shouldn't have said that, but judging by the professor's personality, and by Haddie, it wasn't as though Ailsa thought the two would get along anyway.

The girl's face fell slightly when the professor rather dismissively commented about mundane animals, but pressing on was better than giving up.

"Yes. Me mam's muggle-born and wanted to keep her parents' farm. I think she also does it for me da, sir. He's muggle and I think she doesn't want him to feel out of his element." She paused for a moment to evaluate the professor's response to her family's blood status before she went on. "I've read all about the creatures you have here though. I know that's not the same as working with them, but that's why I want to help. So I can learn."

For the record, James wasn't married and Dante was right. But also for the record, it was completely by choice. Had absolutely nothing to do with the temperature of his room heart.

James set his hot mug down with the bitterness of knowing it'd have gone cold by the time this office visit was over. Though of course that could be fixed with a simple flick of his wand, he chose to remain bitter about it. Honestly, he ought to invest in one of them muggle 'do-not-disturb' signs. Fortunately for them both, the person who entered the office wasn't Poncho Paul, nor any of the others that had made it onto James' list. So the boy was safe, for now.

He looked up curiously, watching as the lanky boy chose a seat. You could tell a lot about a person by the way they entered an office. And even more by the things they said. Barrington did not disappoint, by the way. The comment made a small smile tug onto the Professor's smug lips, as he looked at the boy. What game was Dante trying to play here? Pft. James returned the comment in the same confident tone, "I'm an animal person, Barrington." If that much wasn't already clear. The man was teaching Care of Magical Creatures. Thought it was as clear as mud. And yes, though James wouldn't admit it, he actually did take the time to remember some names.

"You're observant," he leaned back in his chair. Not sarcastic, but more of an observation of James' own. "The fireplace is there for when I want to use it. And right now, I don't want to use it." He raised a brow, "Is that not reasonable?" Though, his fireplace really just was for aesthetic here. It had started getting cobwebs already. Not that Dante needed to know.

.... "Yes," he nodded. What did she mean 'was he at the feast'?! Hadn't she seen the staff table was full? Though could he have gotten away with not showing up, he would've tried it. Especially after the events of the feast, skipping would've been a grand idea. Though, it would be frowned upon for his first day. Thus, he was present. Not by choice. "But I didn't keep a catalog of every student present." Which would explain why he didn't know there was a food-throwing-Denaker he should be aware of. Why was she so surprised? "Ah. Lovely." Was his only appropriate response to the explanation of this Haddie child. She just made the list. It wasn't a pleasant list to make.

If she was looking for a response to her blood status, he didn't give her one to take note of. So what? Was he supposed to care? Did it make a difference? No. He wasn't of the pretentious, judging variety. Not in this way, at least. Blood status meant little to James. As far as he was concerned she was just another witch here to get her Hogwarts education and move on with her life. And take care of a farm, apparently. Which was good for her, he supposed.

"Well Miss Daneker, your enthusiasm for the subject is appreciated," if not a little annoying. "We'll get to working with them very soon, look out on your Common Room noticeboard for that," he winked. "But in the mean time, if you are looking for any more reading material, I do keep quite a few journals." The ones behind him, of course. "And I know the librarian keeps many books for this particular subject area." He'd be a good man to go bother. Besides, the Library Loon deserved it.

There'd been no reaction at all to talk of being a half-blood daughter of a muggle-born witch. None at all. Which meant he either didn't care at all, or he was a very good actor. Ailsa did not think the latter was likely. Besides, she liked him. Under that laconic exterior she was certain there was something soft. She'd gotten that badger in the pasture to trust her, and, honestly, Professor Draper didn't seem all that different.

If the professor's question about her family's farm had made her face light up, his offer of journals might as well have shone a lighthouse in her emerald eyes. "You'd let me... You mean I could... Borrow your journals?!" Easy there, calm down, she admonished herself with limited success. "I've already ready anything I could get my hands on with ma's help, but that's nothing like as good as reading someone's actual notes! I promise I'll return them in good condition." It was several moments before she realised she'd used the plural term. "I mean, I don't want to borrow them all at once. Just one at a time. And when I've copied one, I'll bring it back and get another." The ginger girl was positively beaming at the professor by this point. "I'll start with whatever you think is best."

An animal person. Huh, well now who was being Captain Obvious. The Care of Magical Creatures Professor being an animal person. Dante would never have guessed. What did surprise him was that he actually took the time to look at a class roster and match names with faces. Good Job Professor. He did not think new Professors had it in them to remember names. He deserved a cookie as well.

"You don't say, Professor. Though i guess a cat would probably not like it in this office. No offense"

A cat would not like just sitting in the cold like this man appeared to like doing. Though maybe he got dumped in a warm weather location and now he can only stand the cold. Dante should actually spread that rumor. Thanks Professor he knew he was observant. It was what he did. And yeah sure, IF he wanted to use it. But it looked like it had not been used sine he got here.

"No, that's reasonable. I was just wondering why have one if you're not going to use it"

Dante replied shrugging. If he was going going to use it then Dante would stop caring about it.

…. If James had done something to win the first year over, he had no idea. But her enthusiasm only doubled. Of course offering his journals probably did him in, but they were here for people to read. IT would be a complete waste if they just sat and collected dust. Besides, he had already mentioned them to Miss Roadrunner when she came to visit.

Hadn’t he just said that she could? He gave her a small nod. She didn’t give him much time to say anything else though because there she went again with more of her enthusiasm. Eager Beaver. No other nickname felt more appropriate here. He watched her carefully as she practically bounced up and down with excitement. It was amusing.

Stepping out of his chair, the Professor scanned his shelf knowing exactly which one she ought to start with. He let his fingers brush over the binding of each one, until he found the one he was looking for. Of course it had been tucked in at the very end, naturally. Carefully he wiggled it out, and turned to face the girl once again. ”When my interest in creatures first peaked, I was a week into my training in Brunei,” he walked over and held out the book. ”It starts off with a few letters I meant to send home,” he tapped the cover. ”But my intentions with this journal changed.” From letters to notes and observations.

This one was the most beat up journal out of the bunch as it was the oldest and he wrote it with the least amount of experience. She’d have to be careful, he’d hold her accountable.

James face remained neutral, though he was annoyed. What was this kid trying to get at here? Though, he didn’t much care whether a cat would like it in this office. ”Good thing I don’t have a cat,” he replied. Offense not taken. But still irked.

Again, the boy’s thoughts were right. James had been dumped in a warm weather location. For over four years. Brunei stayed hot, hot, hot ALL year round. It was exhausting, the hot weather. But James didn’t feel as if he owed an explanation. It was just cold in here because he liked it cold. And that was that.

”Now you know,” he’d use it if he wanted to. Sweet Circe, this kid was a piece of work.

So many questions. The next one did not disappoint. Now he had James’ attention. The CoMC Professor gave the lanky boy a look, ”Depends,” this was a test, wasn’t it? See if the new Professor knew what he was doing. He knew how these things went. ”What do you want to know?” Also… Why? Why was he asking about one of the most dangerous, dark creatures known to wizard kind?

Marsha grinned and nodded. ”That would be perfect Sir. Can I help out down in the Housing until then? Brushing down the animals or even cleaning out the stalls.” She hoped for a yes, as she had been doing the same for the past two years and really - who said no to having to clean out less stalls? Smiling happily she waited for an answer.

Nodding more as they continued, Marsha smiled at him. ”Of course!” She exclaimed as if she was insulted that he would even suggest she wouldn’t return the journals as soon as she had read them. ”I’ll get them back to you in good time and in the exact same condition that I receive them in.” She smiled at him though, hoping he knew just how much it meant to her that he would let her read them.

Marsha smiled at him. ”Thank you Professor. I’m very proud to be on the team… there aren’t that many teens on the squad, so it is an honour to run for Britian.” She couldn’t help the way her eyes lit up when talking about running or creatures, so she probably looked seriously enthusiastic…. but honestly, she was. Hence why she wanted to run and work with creatures for the rest of her life… might as well love the thing you are forced to do on a daily basis to get galleons so that you and your family don’t starve. Ailsa's eyes went wide. Sharing something as personal as letters home? Wow...

"Brunei... You must've been doing something very important to have been there." Poor professor Draper, such a promising morning and here he was rapidly becoming the idol of a little ginger firstie. She took the book with the same care she'd used last summer when she'd come across an injured kestrel in the family fields. The village veterinarian had warned her not to expect too much, but she'd visited the bird daily, 'to let it know it had a friend.' Two weeks later when the little falcon was released back into the skies the veterinarian had sworn it wasn't possible. She still saw it around sometimes, even if she was never quite able to explain how she knew it was the same bird.

"I promise to take the very best care of this. Thank you professor." Her smile beamed. "And thank you too, Merlin," she added giving the dog a gentle scratch behind its ear, "it's nice of you to be the professor's friend."

Ah. It was like she read his mind. That’s exactly what he needed. A pooperscooper. Maybe he had made assumptions too quickly. Her mouth ran at 500 miles per hour, but maybe her brain was a close call. Maybe. But first impressions were always weighted heavier anyways. That’s how things were done. ”I don’t see why not,” meaning yes by all means go and do the dirty work.

Sweet Circe, if her smile grew any bigger it’d fall off her face. He was sure. But anyways, yeah yeah don’t mention it, kid. James had a feeling he’d regret letting the students look at them anyways. Probably get his books back with ketchup stains all over the insides. Should’ve put out other less valuable things on his shelf.

And though he said one simple word, the animated girl STILL had so much to say. It was amazing. He had given her absolutely nothing to work with and yet there she went. ”Passion will get you far, Miss—“ What had she said her name was again? Would Miss 500 Miles Per Hour be too blunt? ”Hanover,” he finished after properly remembering.

… She didn’t have more… Did she?

He braced himself just incase.

Dante replied folding his hands and smiling. He knew more than that. But he wanted to hear what the Professor knew.

Come on Creature Man, answer the question

He studied the boy carefully, noting the green in his robes. Ah. One from the green house. He hadn’t had any visitors from that one yet. Dante was the first. Congratulations, Lanky. You’ve won. What had he won? A visit with Mr. Permanently Brooding in a Cold Office, apparently.

Again he surveyed the kid. They were all so skeptical here. Coming to test the Professor on his own subject. Were they just used to Professors that didn’t know anything? What kind of professionals did they hire here? Well, he already had an idea of that what with Poncho Paul and Satan Claus. But the kids had to return for SOMETHING right? And that something had do be something aside from that whole ‘safest place in the wizarding world’ codswallop because if there was a ‘safest place’ it would not be prone to acromantula attacks and student deaths.

It worrisome. Maybe James ought to go back to the basics with his lessons, if the kids had no proper background. After a momentary pause, he leaned back in his chair, ”Fair enough,” he nodded. ”There’s a reason why you don’t know much more because they’re hard to study. Only prey at night. And they have a tendency to consume those that are able to get a close look. I’d say incredibly.violent nature and very aggressive about sums it up.” But of course there was more.

James hadn’t ever gotten the opportunity to see one up close, but they had covered them many times in his uni classes. Curious creatures, Lethifolds are. As James recited all of this information, he picked up a book from on top of his desk, idly flipping through it as if he were bored and this information was right at the top of his head. Didn’t need to think much on it. ”So violent that the only way to defeat one is with the use of a patronus,” which ought to sound at least a little familiar. ”It’s why some suspect they’re closely related to Dementors, though I’m not completely sold on that theory myself.” He set the book down, looking curiously at the boy sat in front of him. ”So why an interest in Lethifolds?”

If Lanky got to ask a question, then so did James. A fair trade off in his not-so-humble opinion.

And then her eyes went and did the thing again.

He was expecting another unfortunate and lengthy speech about something or another, but this time the Eager Beaver went for praising instead. Which, did nothing but stroke his ego. And James’ ego did enjoy being stroked. Not to an unnecessary amount because he could pick out the brownnosers, but this one seemed genuine. ”Well, when one is serving for his country…” he nodded. Military, especially important. Though he was thankful he had left when he did. He had bigger things to do. More to amount to. And the military didn’t really play into his interests.

He returned her thanks with a nod and moved back to his chair. Whatever she whispered to his dog wasn’t heard.

Merlin, this Professor liked to stare. You would think someone as old as him would know that staring was considered rude. Even if this is his office. Probably did not care and Dante could not fault him for that. Dante just grinned at him until he got an answer to his question. Ah so they were even more dangerous than Dante first thought and you would have to been extremely brave or maybe extremely stupid to want to study them.

Probably both.

They were one of the reasons he was trying to learn a patronus and you know the whole Dementor thing too. Just need a happy memory and now he might have just the one. Ah so now Professor was asking a question. Well that was fair since the subject is on a rather morbid creature and probably one of the most dangerous creatures in the world. So okay he would answer.

"I have a morbid fascination in them, Dementors, Nundus and Dragons. Also i have, i guess, a rational fear of them"

Dante replied shrugged. How was that for an answer Professor.

SPOILER!!: Mr You’re Gonna Love Us
[QUOTE=ArianaBlack;11860113]

Grinning back at the Professor she nodded. ”Perfect. I find it relaxing, especially if I’m trying to figure out a problem for homework. I always helped my Mam with the horses when I couldn’t think… I find the Creatures here work the same way.” And yeah, if you put creatures in stables or housing… you need to be prepared to tidy up after them or not have animals.

Nodding her head, yet again she agreed with yet another smile. ”I agree. That is why I’m going to focus on creatures and animals, because I don’t want to stop running and I don’t think you can ever know everything there is to know about creatures.” And just as she said that, her stomach let out a growl and she looked at her watch with a laugh.

”I think I have taken up enough of your time Professor. Please let me know if I can do anything specific to help you with any of the animals and I look forward to your classes.” Rolling her eyes at herself as her stomach growled yet again she sent an apologetic look in his direction. ”I guess it’s breakfast time for me.” She had been up for almost four hours already… it was no wonder that she was hungry.

Well, this was already more than she'd hoped to accomplish by coming here this morning, so Ailsa carefully packed the book into her satchel and thanked the professor for his service.

The girl was almost out the door before she turned back for one last thank-you and, "I know I already said it, but I promise I'll take very good care of this. I can't wait for our first class; I just know yours is going to be my favorite!" With that, she closed the door softly and headed back towards the castle.

Skipping.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOH look at that the door opened on its own! SHE was going to have to learn that…unless it was just Alohamora and that would have been so boring. Peeking her head through the doorway Melbourne just griiiiined whens he heard the words Come In echo through the opening. Stepping into the room the first year smirked.

“Hello Professor Draper,” Mel smiled up at the towering man…well, anything was towering to him, even his dog…wait DOG HE HAD A DOG ON CAMPUS? “OHMYGOSHISTHATAGREATDANE?” she squeaked out as she stepped toward his desk…whether it was a Great Dane or not it was OBVIOUS that it was male. “Can I pet him? What’s his name? Is he part Cruppy?” She asked her words coming out quickly….and then she stopped fixed a polite little smile on her face and grinned.

“I…sorry,” she grinned. “I like dogs, my brother owns a Crup breeding facility and kennel in Ambleside actually” she nodded….ooooh look at Professor Draper’s face…she was absolutely SURE he’d be nice to stare at…was he single? Could he be? Could she hint at him now…ask…about family? Kids? Girlfriends you know…everything she could do to make her sister be well….wait what did India say about staring. Right. Not to. STOP STARING AT HIM stop…but staring was fun he had a nice face to stare at…no she was not going to pout at him except she was.

“Oh…Professor, I wanted to introduce myself” she finally added after the awkward (though he didn’t know it) silence. “I’m Melbourne Johanson…” cue BIIIIIIIIIG SMILES. “I wanted to ask if with your creature companion thing do we need our parents permission or….does a sister-guardian-person work because I have a sister and she basically raised me” she nodded not adding the much needed and she’s single and pretty and lonely…”and well, its just…I want to work with creatures my mum and dad used to” she nodded ”before they were eaten by a dragon” she added in a whisper. “Are we learning about Dragons this year?” She asked excitedly.

Yes. She still liked dragons. ”you have a pretty face” she muttered so quickly that it probably sounded more like a wheezing rattling breath. “oh…and if at all possible could you aid me in training my Jarvey?” She asked excitedly.

He liked to make judgements and that is exactly what he was doing here. The observation part was only a necessity. He had to watch to make the assessments and Lanky was hard to pinpoint, James couldn’t quite place the kid’s angle, and it bothered him.

Lanky’s explanation was interesting though. A morbid fascination. ”Afraid we can’t do much in class to satisfy that fascination,” because these creatures were deadly, y’know? ”Aside from theory.” Of course. But James didn’t want to lecture an entire lesson, imagine how tiring that would be. And as of late he had become a many with far from many words, so an entire class spent lecturing did not sound so pleasant.

And with that, the Professor was ready to finish this little office visit… But then suddenly, something struck him. An idea. Couldn’t quite say he placed it on his own, the talk of rational fears stimulated it. Well, in this case he was hoping for more of the irrational kind.

A smug grin crept it’s way onto James’ face as he leaned forward just a bit. ”Say, Barrington, how familiar are you with your Astronomy Professor?

”Creatures are excellent for putting one’s mind at ease,” he agreed. The homework bit, well, he wasn’t sure if that actually worked but he gave her a small nod nevertheless. Though it was annoying the way she ran her mouth, it was nice on his part. Didn’t have to contribute too much. Gave her an inch and she’d take it a mile.

He politely ignored the growling her stomach kept doing and was quite relieved when she announced that she’d be heading out. He had work to attend to. Lessons to plan. Deadlines to set. All that good ol’ Professor stuff. So he wouldn’t protest. ”I’ll see in you class, Miss Hanover,” Hopefully she wouldn’t be talking as much. And with that, he went back to reading over papers.

Was she about to leave without a proper farewell? Manners were absolutely lost on this generation. He shook his head, picking up the piece of parchment in front of him and beginning to read back over it when Ailsa stopped. Ah. Much better. ”Have a good day, Miss Denaker,” was all James said in return as she made her way out the door.

Of course his class was going to be her favorite.

…… No.

He was not ready for this. No amount of expecting the unexpected could prepare him for who had just BOUNCED her way into his office. Not that he knew who she was, he had absolutely no idea, but he didn’t like her. Already didn’t like her one bit. He looked up, almost alarmed, as she eyed Merlin. Merlin who let out a weary bark in return.

James quickly reached over to pet his head, letting him know that it was quite alright, before looking back up at The-Human-Pogo-Stick Child. ”A Great Dane, impressive observation,” he confirmed. Not that impressive actually, but eh. Maybe she’d calm down now? It was worth a try. And then there spitfire questions all at once. Maybe it didn’t work. He took a deep breath. What the heck did the elves put in the food here? Essence of insanity, if he had a guess. ”Yes. Merlin. And actually no, I adopted him from a muggle shelter.” Answers all in order.

Geez.

Did she ever stop to breathe? He opted to stay silent as she spit out every word in the english dictionary as if it would be her last opportunity to speak for the rest of her life. Which clearly, it wasn’t. So if she wanted to take things slow it wouldn’t be a problem. Just saying. He let most of her words pass through, without pondering on them for too long. Most of it felt irrelevant anyways.

But then she stopped talking. Surprised? Very. Though, in all honesty, James almost preferred the talking to the staring…. He gave her a curious look, as he leaned back in his desk. He wasn’t uncomfortable with the staring. But she came to HIS office. She was the one who had to prompt the questions here. So he didn’t say anything, waiting on her instead.

Ah finally. ”Pleasure to meet you, Miss Johanson,” he nodded, giving a forced small grin in return. Take the ‘pleasure’ bit lightly. And he couldn’t offer any other words because there she went again. This was going to be a horribly long day, he could already tell. Aheeeeem. He tried not to look too miserable. ”The form only asks for your signature,” had she even read it? Tut, tut. ”But informally, it would be good for your guardian to know that you do plan on working with the creatures all term.” What she said about her sister was irrelevant. ”Be it a parent or sister, doesn’t matter.”

Did that answer her question? …. Not all of them of course, because there were at least ten more now. What she said about the dragons, James didn’t care to try and figure out. If it was something he ought to know, she would’ve bounced about it. So he shrugged it off. ”If we have enough time…” and if the students quit bursting into his office and let him actually come up with lesson plans, then ”Maybe.” He wasn’t about to divulge lesson plans here, yo. He hadn’t even made them all yet. And something told him that if he were to tell Melbourne the plans, the entire school would know by dusk tomorrow.

As for the comment about his face, he heard that. But politely chose to ignore it, as it would make for a very unprofessional conversation. And he already knew he had a pretty face. ”One thing at a time, Miss Johanson,” in other words LET THE MAN ANSWER ALL THOSE OTHER QUESTIONS FIRST then they could get to the Jarvey matter. How did that sound?

Even Mel knew that wasn’t impressive, “its not impressive…it just means I know dogs.” She shrugged and looked up at the Professor tilting her head, “really? Merlin I like the name,” she smiled to the dog and took a quick step over to the dog and gave it a pat on the head before attempting to scratch behind his ear. She was being friendly yes.

Maybe Merlin would like her by the end of this…heck, she’d even just like walking the dog and sitting with it and talking with him and playing with him…gosh, she missed dogs. “Good boy,” she smiled over to him and continued petting him…yes she was sort of unaware that she had put Professor Draper on edge.

She wasn’t staring now. Nope. Just staring at Merlin and smiling and petting him for a bit before retreating back again and giving the dog some space. He deserved space…people were different than dogs…dogs were her favorite thing ever well, other than dragons.

Somehow she didn’t trust his smile but she sent one back in return. “I wanted to make sure to be safe…as I wouldn’t mind working with the more dangerous creatures…I’ve already seen a dragon I person when I was a kid” she nodded and beamed happily…dragons were awesome. Her favorite. He was maybe her second favorite now. Yep. “Thank you” she nodded and grinned at him.

REALLY IF THEY HAD TIME? That was the best news well EVER. She was beaming. “That is awesome! If you need help I know a lot about dragons I was even born at the Welsh Dragon reserve” she nodded to him and grinned. DRAGONS WERE LIFE.

“Of course…I just want to train him to stop antagonizing my owl…Moriarity keeps trying to eat Sherlock,” she added with a huff and frowned. She would be so sad if Sherlock died. He was her companion for so long now. Her curse spewing companion.

Shame, well guess the CoMC research he wants to do will have to be left to books in the library or asking him for specific books. Please, theory was all he wanted since he was not stupid enough to want to meet one of these things. He just wanted to be able to defend himself against one of them. That was basically it you know, besides learning all he could about them.

Information was Power.

"I see"

Dante was just about to get up to leave since he had almost had enough of Mr. Permanently Brooding in a Cold Office. But then he asked a odd question. Well now this was getting interesting.

"I am pretty familiar with him. I have know him for all of my 5 years here so far, why?"

Question for a Question and well done Professor. Now you fully had Dante's attention.

James gave her a slight shrug. If she wasn't going to take his fake compliment, then up to her. He didn't give them out often. Not even the fake ones. He did, however, pay attention as she took steps closer to Merlin, watching protectively as she reached down to pet the dog.

…. Right.

Again it was hard to want to keep up with her as she kept spitting out words as if they meant absolutely nothing. Where did she find time to breathe? It was incredibly. She just kept going. And going. And going. It was like silence was only a concept and one that she had never encountered before. ”We’ll see,” was his only response in regards to all this dragon nonsense. Of course he wouldn’t enlist her help with anything as dangerous as a dragon. He’d enlist another adult to help. This child was the size of his pinky finger.

… And she was about to drive him insane within the first five minutes of this meeting so there was no way he could stand keeping her around for much longer. No, he’d definitely find another Professor if they were to handle creatures that needed help.

Though of course the ‘if they had time’ was only said to appease the child. Though apparently, it did the complete opposite because once again it had recharged her and had adverse effects. Joy.

Alright back to business though, what was this about her Jarvey? ”Your Jarvey, where do you keep him?” Because if she brought him to Hogwarts… They were about to have an issue.

Heh. And now that James had clearly gotten Dante’s attention, he could really get the ball rolling on this plan of action. ”Excellent,” all five years. Perfect.

”Well let’s just say, I owe him one.” Instead of leaning forward now, he tipped himself back in his chair again. Alright kid, your time to shine. How well did the boy actually know his Astronomy Professor. There was a question he still had to ask here, but before he forgot… One more, pressing matter took precedence.

So reaching into the drawer of his desk, he pulled out the gift he had received from the man during the start of the term feast. Yes, he actually kept it. Not on purpose. He had meant to toss it right away, but after the feast he was exhausted, so it was just thrown into the drawer and forgotten up until this point. ”He has loads of these, yes?” That’s right, James had seen that ridiculous table outside of the man’s classroom. ”I need to know why.” Surely Dante had some sort of explanation for the man’s infatuation with lint rollers.

That... beast... wasn't... on... a... leash...

Blue eyes growing to the size of the Moon, she whispered "Moss," at the beast. Miss Moss. Her name. As if the dog was the professor. She had gone completely white, and couldn't even look elsewhere. She took an involuntary step to the side when he came to open the door for her. Dogs could sense fear, couldn't they? And they attacked people for it? She gulped and slipped inside to get away from the door as much as possible. And when the beast ran inside to take a position by the desk, it was already decided that she would remain on her feet even if it killed her. There was NO WAY she was going anywhere near that. No, she was quite happy next to the door, tyvm. She knew she had to look at the professor at some time, though, so she forcefully did that.

"I," she had to speak louder, but she was shivering and it wasn't just because of the cold, "Ijustcamebytoask," she took a deep breath, "I'm a first year, and I - maybe if - you'd let me attend the classes." But if that was going to take part too, she would avoid his class till the end of the time.

Oh well now this was getting interesting. He owed Airey one. Well this was sounding like a prank war. Dante was very interested now. Now what was he doing Dante waited and he pulled out a lint roller. Really a lint roller, Professor. The answer was obvious. Dante nodded. He did.

"Professor Airey hates lint on his suits with a passion. Though he hates anything on them. He likes his suits being perfectly clean. He also does not like cats."

That was just an added bonus since Dante was starting to like you Professor.

You should feel honored or at least appreciative.

Mel liked the dog. Yes she did. She was probably going to stop in again just to give Merlin pets whenever she could. “Thank you though, for the compliment” she muttered quietly after a while of standing there…was she awkward no. Not at all. Never.

“Awesome” she grinned and then tipped her head at him when he asked about the Jarvey. “Oh I keep him in my room” she paused for a moment “my sister India takes care of him” she added after what felt like five minutes. “If I could I’d love to have him here” she nodded. Yep.

She was a good animal person. “That would be the best for training after all” she added with a nod. Yep. She would even give him to the Professor for the term if she needed to…though that would mean she would have to see him all the time. Yes, yes she was going to talk to India about sending Sherlock there…or well, maybe she’d just have the little ferret friend Watson sent over instead…he was much calmer and less volatile than Sherlock ever seemed to be.

”Miss Moss,” he finished after hearing her practically whisper her surname. Luckily, he had caught it. And it wasn’t the only thing he caught onto because he could most definitely see something else going on here. Was she afraid of Merlin? That much wasn’t hard to figure out. He watched her, curiously. She hadn’t taken her eyes off Merlin since entering.

James let go of the door, allowing it to close shut, and made his way to sit in his seat in front of his desk. ”I assure you, Merlin is friendly.” The poor dog had grown accustomed to visitors. ”He won’t be getting up from his spot anytime soon,” it was his favorite spot. But mostly because they had just gone out on a run, and Merlin was very tired.

And he’d get to her inquiry now, yes. Sweet Circe, the girl looked as if she had just seen voldemort in the flesh. ”Miss Moss, if you could sit down, I’d be happy to discuss this with you.” The happy part, not to be taken too seriously. But he didn’t mind talking her through this. He gestured to one of the seats. Merlin was on the other side of his desk, so she’d be fine. She’d be fine regardless, but she’d definitely be fine in her own head if she allowed it.

And despite what one may think, James actually did want people to come to his classes. He even encouraged the first years to get a head start, however, if Miss Moss was terrified of Merlin… Then they may have a bit of a problem here.

James liked the kid. Despite how annoying his questions had been and his keen observation skills, Lanky was actually useful. James appreciated that. Hates lint on his suits. This information wouldn’t help very much for what James intended on doing. But it could always come in handy for future cases. So James grinned and tucked away the information.

However, the bonus information, well let’s just say if the smug smile on his face had been telling before, then now it was MASSIVELY TELLING.

Cats. Easy. James could do cats.

”Excellent,” jackpot. And with that, he leaned over and tossed the lint roller into the rubbish bin with a loud CLANK as he made the shot. ”You’ve proven to be very helpful, Mr. Barrington.” He didn’t give that kind of compliment to just anyone. And with that, ”My last question, I’m afraid. Is there anything else I can do for you?” And if not, #byefelicia. James had a prank to plot.

James took a sip of his coffee, nodding to her thanks. This kid was… Interesting to say the least. Far too eager to please. Made him suspicious of whether or not there was some sort of hidden agenda, there normally was. And he was good at finding them.

Another thing he was good at doing, finding illegal pets at Hogwarts. So he was relieved when she admitted that her jarvey was kept at home. Made his job loads easier. He gave her a SMALL smile to indicate that she had chosen the RIGHT answer. Good. ”Talk to me at the end of the term, we may be able to work something out,” he winked then quickly returning to his serious demeanor.

”So your jarvey and owl don’t get along?” Hmmm. He paused to think for a moment. Perhaps he did have some advice to offer. In the meantime, was she going to start running her mouth again? Probably. If he had to bet.

Weren't all the dogs friendly, though? Every single dog owner claimed that their dog was the best-behaved of all. It was so absurd, but she held her tongue back. Not like she could talk right now anyway. Her logic believed the professor, though. He was a care of magical creatures professor, if anyone could train dogs, it was him. However, this was why she had a phobia: she couldn't control it. That thing could probably smell her fear. What if it decided it would be funny to come smell her closer? What if it decided to attack!? No, she could not -

................. the professor was actively inviting her to sit down.

She turned paler and with an audible breath, slowly and quite obviously reluctantly approached while blue eyes were still solely fixed on the thing.

It's going to be okay, Professor Draper is here, it won't attack, you can do it, it's sitting there...

After what felt like a hundred miles, she finally reached the silly chairs and perched on one - though if one could call it 'sitting' while all of her muscles were on alarm code red and kept her half standing ready to bolt if that thing moved an INCH.

And the worst of all, she lost the sight of it behind the table. What if, what if, what if - ?

She wished she had approached the man during a meal or something.

Hidden agendas were something that Melbourne probably had in droves…well, some of them were actually hidden agendas but that was another story all together. At the end of term? That was so looooooooooooooong to wait.

She’d just invite all the squirrels and little woodland creatures into her room for the time being then and feed them little…wait, they’d probably get into the walls and make it impossible to sleep. She made a little face at her idea before shrugging and grinning to the Professor. “Of course, that would be great,” she nodded.

“well…no, not really.” She admitted sheepishly, “the Jarvey wakes the owl up at night and the owl does the same…its why I named them Sherlock and Moriarty because they seem like nemesis” she admitted. “it might be the nature of owls see rodent-like-creatures as food.” She shrugged and looked up at the Professor. “Any suggestions?” She asked as calmly as possible.

James wasn’t claiming. He KNEW his dog was the best-behaved of all.

…..

Miss Moss looked like she was about to turn the actual color of moss and get sick right in his office. She looked absolutely terrified and that much was easy to tell by her expression, let alone the fact that she hadn’t uttered a single word since walking in. Sweet Circe, every kid had some sort of different problem, huh? Why couldn’t there be just one normal one? W H Y.

He was really, REALLY trying to be as friendly as possible here. She was already terrified enough, didn’t need to scare her to oblivion. So he took a calming, deep breath. ”Do you want me to take him outside?”

Would the girl talk to him then?

The Eager-Beaver-Child made a lot of funny faces when she was in deep thought, did she know that?

It was amusing to watch. And verging on quite strange, but he didn’t comment on it. See how nice he was? Truly an altruist.

”… I see,” he leaned back in thought. He had zero interest in the names of her creatures or the reason as to why they earned said names, but he let her ramble regardless. Apparently, it’s what she did. ”They will have to learn to get along if forced to,” he nodded. ”But they haven’t gotten properly accustomed to one another yet. Something like this will take time and patience.” Both words that James’ himself dreaded as a strong Gryffindor mind. He knew how they worked. ”Keep letting them familiarize with one another… But don’t let them eat each other, yeah?” In other words: moderation, kid.

She was being completely irrational, she knew. She had no real reason to be afraid of the dog, however, she couldn't control it. She was also perfectly aware of the fact that she wasn't impressing the professor at all. The man was probably a second away from shooing her away. How could a girl terrified of good ole dogs attend a proper CoMC lesson where they would have to deal with bigger and deadlier creatures, after all? No, she could control the fear. She was a true Ravenclaw, the Hat had placed her so without even touching her head. She was the child of logic, and the logic clearly stated her to trust the professor.

A deeeeeeeeeeeep breath... and let the game of impressing this man begin.

"No, sir, I'm fine," she said and even tried to smile. She sounded weak and was still sitting at the chair's edge, but she looked more in control now. "I promise I'm better with other animals," she said, although it was a lie... sort of. She'd never seen any other animal except for sheep and cows, which weren't even magical, so she didn't really know how she would do in the presence of, say, a bowtruckle. Anyway.

"As I asked before," which he might not have heard due to the weakness of her voice, "can I attend the classes even though I'm a first year? I won't touch anything, I promise! I'll just watch." She just wanted a head-start in this subject.

..... Alright.

Well this was a lovely chat even though he was the only one talking and all, but James had things to do. And if she was just planning to sit their like a statue and ignore his questions, then she could be on her way. Thanks. James was the one meant to be ignoring questions. That was his job. Well, not his job. His job was to answer them, but he picked and chose his battles. And this would not be one of them.

So go on kid if you're not going to say anything, shoo.

Kneazle's got her tongue, yeah? "So you do talk," he smiled smugly. Ha, James so FUNNY. Cracked himself up, really. Anyways, what was she saying? Ah yes, promised she was better with the other animals. Doubtful, but he listened.

And though her show with Merlin was anything but impressive, he would let her join the class. Simply because she marched down here to ask in the first place. That showed some courage and he wouldn't ever deter a student from a learning opportunity. Could she handle it? Maybe. But was it worth a shot? Absolutely. "I see no problem in that, Miss Moss... However, I do not allow students to simply stand around during my lessons. Participation is a requirement," he waited to see how she would react.

Hm? Was she still willing?

itsjustjesse 01-21-2016 06:41 AM

sorry this is late *loves*

Melbourne was listening intently to everything Professor Draper was saying. Her eyes were practically twinkling with delight. “Of course that makes complete sense!” She beamed at him and bounced a bit where she stood.

“I’m going to work on that over summer break” she nodded, “…though I think my sister wont let me bring him until fifth year” she frowned slightly but really, that was what sisters did. For now maybe she could just bring her sister’s pet rock with her…or get a pygmy puff or something slightly more dangerous than a pygmy puff.

Standing for a moment she just smiled. “Of course I wouldn’t let them eat each other!” She was practically laughing and bouncing on her feet. “Thank you Professor – oh…do you know of any good books on training creatures?” She asked happily ready for more advanced things….”also, if you need help cleaning stalls and things for class I was thinking of getting some skills down so I could work as a pet-sitter over breaks” she nodded, “I would even walk Merlin for you if he’d allow it” she offered giving Merlin a little wave. Yes. Dogs were great.

StarShine 01-21-2016 06:59 PM

She had annoyed him, hadn't she?

Ugh, she mentally slapped herself and took a mental note to impress him in the future.

Participate? There was nothing more that she liked in the world!

"Of course, professor," she said eagerly - Merlin forgotten for a moment (but only for ONE), "thank you so much!" She even SMILED. She was going to be a brilliant student, see?

Of course it made sense! Was she surprised? Better not be. He'd give her the benefit of the doubt. But he also couldn't help but feel a strange sense of satisfaction at how giddy she got after hearing the advice. Merlin, you'd think he just solved world hunger or something.

"Ah the possessive type," though maybe it was for the best. Meant they wouldn't have to deal with any more of the pet's problems for a while. Didn't sound horrible to James, honestly.

Again he leaned back in his chair, watching her. Not paying much attention to the words she was squealing, but rather to the manner in which she did so. She was... interesting to say the least. One minute asking ten thousand questions, the next being quite serious, and then in another moment up on her feet cackling away about something or another which James chose not to care about. Interesting. Almost a little headache inducing. But interesting. Firecracker, she was.

"....A few, yes," .... Was she serious? He was the bloody Care of Magical Creatures Professor of course he knew books on training creatures! But he humored her. "I would suggest referencing your textbook for basics, but the more effective books will be specific to the creature in which you would want to learn about and I don't have many of those on my shelves here." He was always more hands-on learner anyways. But there were more books back home, just didn't see the use of hauling them all over to Hogwarts when they had an entire floor dedicated to that. Which brought him to the next point, "In which case, I would point you to the library. As I do believe they have an entire section dedicated to creatures there." And he did encourage that students went there to bother Library Loon Leo about it. The man needed some extra work to do. And it meant the kids would be more prepared for lessons, something James always welcomed.

"Thank you Miss Johanson, extra help is always welcome." Man, if he knew the kids would be this enthusiastic about scooping poop, he would've taken this job YEARS ago.

Yes, just a bit.

He nodded in response to her thanks, knowing very well that he probably just made the child's day. Not often he did such a thing, but eh it was rewarding, yes. He'd admit. He was also very arrogant.

"However, Miss Moss, although this is approved now... Should any issues arise, you will be expected to consult with me and we will reevaluate, yes?" Was that understood? Basically he was saying, don't screw up kid. He'd know.

.... That was it?

Well, that was brilliant news. First office visit in history to take less than 10 minutes. James could get used to this.

But uh, why was she still sitting? ..... He wasn't going to offer her anything to sip on if that's what she was trying to do here.... He wasn't like those other pansy Professors coughPONCHOPAULcough. "Well then, I look forward to seeing you in class Miss Moss," eh, sort of.

Getting out of his seat, he walked towards the door to prop it open for the girl.

StarShine 01-27-2016 07:28 PM

Yes, of course.

How polite was Professor Draper for getting up and opening the door for her? She was going to do her BEST for him, just so he knew! So she got up, eyed the beast one last time before walking quickly out (she might have been careful to keep the man between herself and it ahem) as she said "Have a nice day, sir."

itsjustjesse 01-30-2016 01:16 AM

Melbourne absolutely thought Professor Draper was awesome…his face was even more so of course. “Yeah…well…she is my guardian” so that probably made things make sense right? “But Sherlock’s possessive too” she nodded.

Yes she was serious. Professors probably had a better grasp on some of these books didn’t they? At least that was what Mel thought. “Of course…that’s probably a good idea” she nodded a bit and smirked a bit when thinking about a whole section about creatures.

“Of course Professor Draper,” she grinned. “Thank you for all the help…” well it wasn’t really help but seeing his face had been nice right? “It’s been nice meeting you, I should head off now I think? M’gonna check out the library section you mentioned” she nodded while backing slowly closer to the door. "You have a nice day Professor," she grinned.

Oh yes, he noted how keen she was on staying as far away from Merlin as she could. It'd make for an interesting time in lessons, that's for sure. He was incredibly curious to see how she'd behave around bigger creatures and actual beasts. Only time could tell. So he let her walk off before returning to his desk and cracking open his book.

Of course it was a good idea. There wasn't a single 'probably' about it. James knew what he was doing. He was the professional around here. Clearly.

"Anytime," he nodded. Not really. There were specific times. He had office hours. And particular hours that merited better moods. "You as well," he gave her a polite nod again and watched as she bounced.

Interesting kid.

Though they all were, in some respect.

SPOILER!!: Draper
James was drowning in all this paperwork. Well, not exactly paperwork. More like homework. Why did he assign all of this to begin with? Next week, the kids were getting no homework. Officially. As much as he felt they all needed the discipline, he also felt he needed a break. This job was much more exhausting than they made it sound in the description.

Taking another sip of his coffee, he reached to dill his quill in some more red ink. And that's when he heard the knock on the door. Yes that's right! James Draper was for once very HAPPY to hear a knock on his door. Unless it was the hag returning from the forrest, then she could leave. But otherwise, any distraction from this unfortunate pit of never ending work, was welcome.

Taking his time to get out of his seat, the Professor made his way to his door and turned the nob. He was a bit surprised to see the visitor sat on one of the seats, though he supposed that's why he had them there to begin with. For comfort... Or something like that. "Miss Lynch," he nodded. Yes, he took his time to remember some names. She was a good student, therefore her name was one of them. It was simple. Strategic. "Come in," he held the door open for her. You're welcome.

Really, she hadn't been sitting down all that long before the door to the office had opened. There stood Professor Draper looking at her. The man was probably wondering why exactly she was even there. SHE was now wondering the exact same thing. It was much to late to change her mind however.

With a small smile set in place Hady rose to her feet slipping the strap to her bag over her shoulder. "Hello Professor Draper, I hope I didn't come at a bad time." Yes, yes in fact she did hope that. He could send her away to return at another time he he was to busy! Please let him be to busy!

Only it didn't appear that he was. For if the professor had been to busy to answer the knock he wouldn't have done so. And her certainly wouldn't have invited her in which he did. Stepping slowly into the room her hazel eyes swept over everything including (Merlin) where they lingered for a moment or two longer then anywhere else. Turning her attention and her focus back onto the reason for her visit she spoke quietly, "I've been thinking more about my career path when I finish my lessons but I was hoping I could speak with you about it." He worked with animals daily and that's what she wanted to do...sort of. Heal them anyhow.

Yes well, they could call it efficiency. James was good at that. Efficiency, like most other things really. And at this rate, he'd be willing to let even Backpack boy in. And thus we have a rare moment in which James Draper is welcoming.

Which brought him to point A, "Not at all," it was perfect timing, actually. Just about to start looking at another essay. And by the looks of it, this one was pound to get a T. Horrendous. Did the students not realize that they'd be lowered down a mark for every stain they left on their parchment? Here's some expert advice kids, don't do your assignments whilst midnight snacking. It never turned out well.

James waited for the girl to step inside before letting go of the door and walking to his seat. "Have a seat," he gestured to the chairs facing his desk, before leaning back in his own and listening to what she had to say. Career path, he nodded. The others who had come to him convinced that creatures were their calling... They were all fetuses. No well, they were all underclassmen. The first years. Too excitable, too naive, hadn't taken a single exam in their life. Didn't know what any of it meant. So of course he wouldn't turn them away completely, but they wouldn't be taken seriously just yet. Not until they proved themselves.

Miss Lynch on the other hand, was older, had more experience, approached this office visit the right way, and... James was also in a good mood, which helped.

"So you're considering a career in the field of creatures, then?" He raised a brow, assuming that this is why she had chosen to come to him in particular seeing as James wasn't the most friendly looking Professor of the bunch, it had to be something other than his warm, shining personality. That, and maybe the question would encourage her to elaborate.

Aaww so she hadn't interrupted anything important? Darn it. That meant that he had time for her. Time to talk and as good as this was she was nervous. More so then talking to the other professors of even her Head of House. Why, she really had no idea. It was so silly of her and she knew it.

Hady smiled gently along with giving a small nod of her head. Thank you for NOT being busy just then. Slowly walking further into the office she choose a seat and sat down, her bag on her lap when told to do so. "Thank you." Did he even hear her? Why was she being so quiet today? Gosh where was Frankie or Zeke or someone that could help her relax and make her feel not so shy all of a sudden. Her career was important to her.

"I am, Professor," Hady replied softly tucking a piece of hair behind her ear getting if off of her face. "I've always liked being around different creatures Sir, big and small alike. I have no trouble at all in allowing them their own space and time needed to come to me on their own or get right down and in there doing whatever task might need to be done. Specifically in the future I want to be a Healer for all creatures but everyone needs to start somewhere, right? And what better way to begin then to really get in there and form a bond or at the very least a friendship and some trust with as many creatures as I can." Did any of this make sense? James couldn't tell how nervous she was, could he? Gosh she really hoped not.

He nodded in response to her thanks and took a sip of his tea as he listened to her explanation.

Her elaboration was quite detailed and James really only partially payed attention to all the particulars. He of course nodded the entire time as if he were mentally taking note of each adjective, however, really he was only keeping track of the bigger picture words.

And despite her hopes, he could tell she was nervous, but he wouldn’t make mention of it. Already he had decided he liked this one. She was humble. They others? Not so much. He didn’t say anything immediately after she finished explaining, though he looked at her with consideration. He hadn’t ever officially advised a student on a matter such as this before… So he needed to choose his words wisely, make sure he did it justice.

”Well Miss Lynch, the healing field is certainly a very competitive one,” he nodded. ”Even in regard to creatures.” He didn’t mean to discourage and hopefully this didn’t do such a thing. ”But you’ve picked the perfect time to being delving deeper into your exploration with this path of study.” Most students waited until the very last minute to figure things out, but the fact that she was here early in her Fifth Year meant she was taking matters seriously. Very good.

”Though of course, most of your options would require further education after Hogwarts,” he paused waiting to hear what she thought of this. Was she aware that going to uni would be a required step and would she be willing? He raised a single brow, hoping that she would take initiative to voice her thoughts or any concerns that she may have. Hopefully none, but he could work with it.

Hadleigh shifted in her seat. James' eyes were on her and she knew he was studying her. Going over everything she had just said and then some. He was evaluation her and this somehow unnerved her even more. Whatever came from this day could tilt how her future went for her. Well not entirely but she knew that he could help her with her choices and plans that needed to be set into motion.

This she knew. The whole healing thing was a very big field. Was she competitive enough to pull herself through it all to make a name for herself. YES! "I know Sir," she replied softly with a firm nod of her head. Extra studying. Further education wouldn't be a problem in the least. This she had expected and knew of since she was young.

"I understand that it will most likely mean my going on to uni and I have no trouble at all with that. In fact I like the idea of learning all that I can about the field." Being a healer was her goal. Being a healer for creatures was where her heart lay and whatever she needed to do would be done. Even if she had to move to another state or the other side of the world to attend the best uni in the field then she would do it. A small smile played around her lips as she lifted her hazel eyes to meet those of the man before her, "Whatever it takes Professor Draper. I'm going to do it."

James hadn’t brought up the competitive side in order to scare her off, so he was quite pleased when it didn’t. Besides, the green house was for the ambitious, yes? He listened as she explained further and nodded along when she mentioned University because that would most definitely be a requirement for someone planning to go into the field she had in mind. What she said last got a SMALL smile out of him.

”Good,” he nodded. ”That’s the proper attitude to have,” and though he didn’t like seeing cockiness within his students, this one didn’t seem to spill over in that bucket yet. He could tell by the way she was shifting in her seat. There was humility there. ”You’re in your… Fifth year, yeah?” Despite the fact that he pretended not to care, James actually did pay attention to who was in which of his classes. Couldn’t let them know, but he did care. Even if just a bit. ”It’s a pivotal year in regards to your future in this field.” She hopefully already knew that, but if not he wanted to stress the importance.

”You will need OWL scores of at least an E for Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, and Potions,” all courses which would help her in this process. ”And you will also want to choose at least two more elective classes to continue through NEWT level in addition to those three; I suggest Transfiguration as one.” Was she getting all that?

”It’d also be a good time to consider looking into other options to make your applications more competitive,” he nodded slowly. ”You’ve still got some time, but summers provide a great time to get some experience.” Maybe he could see about pulling some strings to get her an internship or something… If she wanted. However, he waited to see what she had to say about all of this, hoping that maybe she already had ideas of her own that would help her add an extra edge.

Was that a smile? It appeared to at least be a hint of a smile which was certainly something to be happy about. Something she had said made him happy in some way. Sitting up a little taller in her seat she kept her attention on the man sat across from her.

"Yes Sir, I am." Fifth year. One of the tougher years. OWLs to take and the time to really decide what she was going to make of herself. This was the year she needed to shine and show everyone what she was made of and she planned on doing just that. Hady was silently taking in what was being said to her giving a small nod of her head to show she was in fact very much listening and did understand what was being said to her. "It is and that's the main reason I'd like to get everything I need to do straightened out and started on." And she meant everything.

CoMC, Charms and Potions. Two of those three were already her top classes. That meant she just needed to push herself a little more in Potions. This she could do easily. As for electives the Slytherin was happy to hear James suggest Transfiguration and it earned a small grin from her. This wasn't a lesson she would be dropping at all as it went hand in hand with her other studies. "What other electives would you suggest I take in addition to Transfiguration?" He would know best, yes? How could it be to take these classes when she was currently taking them ALL anyhow?

And the heart of the conversation right there. This was in a small way why she was currently sitting right here. "My summer is currently completely open to anything that would help me get a step ahead in my goals. I don't exactly have anything specific in mind, I'm open to anything you might be able to suggest," she answered after just a moments pause. If he would be able to help her get that tiny step further she wouldn't be turning it down.

Yes, yes it was a hint of a smile. But she better not go around telling that to all her friends because then he could guarantee that it would be the only one she'd ever receive. In the short time that he had become a Professor here, he had already built a reputation for himself. One that he was planning on upholding. Unlike some pansy Professors like Poncho Paul, James demanded a sense of respect from his students. And he planned on keeping it that way.

"Then I hope it's safe to presume that you've already begun studying?" Of she was aware and all that. Though, James was one of those that studied at the very last minute so... Ahem. But even if she hadn't started yet, this would be a good wake up call. He wouldn't be disappointed either way. Just needed to stress the importance a bit. Plus, scaring them was always a good way of getting a point across.

Again, Hady didn't seem to be taken aback by the information he fed her. Instead of seeing her light dim, he only saw her brighten. It was also evident that her confidence rose as the conversation continued. He appreciated that. Adjusting his collar, James listened to her question, deciding it was one he liked and would therefore answer. "Other electives are entirely up to you," he considered it for a moment. "I believe there is a branch for healing if you were to consider continuing Runes, but it isn't as important as your healing charms and potions would be." Also fun. She should probably decide based on what she thought was fun. But this wasn't advice James was planning on voicing. Hopefully she knew to consider fun.

Her summer was empty? Perfect. That opened up the possibility for incredible opportunities. "Have you had the chance to look into any possible summer internships or job opportunities?" He also had a few he could present, but best see if she already had anything in mind. And as long as she continued to excel in his class the way she has been, then he wouldn't even mind passing on recommendations. "... Would this be something you're interested in?" The internships and jobs.

Needed to see if she even fancied the idea, y'know?

Even with her attention fully fixed on Professor Draper and the hint of a smile she may have gotten from him earlier she knew she would have to make sense of everything that was being said. This wasn't a situation to take lightly and whatever suggestions or opportunities would come from this needed to be thought over.

For her OWLs? Heck yeah she had already started. "Yes, Sir," Hady replied with a firm nod of her head. When she wasn't in a lesson, doing homework, assisting a peer with something, or just enjoying some much needed down time on her own/with a friend or with Frankie she was studying. It's what she did.

Just so she continued to both take and excel in CoMC, CHarms, Potions and Transfiguration she could take any other classes she wanted. Certainly something to think about. Listening as James answered her question about other possible electives a tiny hint of a frown formed on her lips, just as fast as it come it was gone. Runes wasn't her best subject at all! In fact she wasn't really that good at it buuuuttttt Zeke would be take it. Surely he wouldn't mind if she had some questions about it all. "I have some considering to do then there. I'm not the best at Runes so I don't know if I'll be continuing with that one or not," she admitted quietly.

"No I haven't." At least not yet. How much was open for a fifth year really? If it had something to do with creatures and or healing though she would do it. When asked if it was something she was interested in she smiled nodding her head once more. "It would be, yes." Her father would understand if it was something that would help her career wise. An internship or a job in the right field could open up all the other doors she needed to achieve her goal.

James appreciated how attentive Miss Lynch was, though he wouldn't comment on it. He was grateful. Didn't have to waste any of his patience on her. It was refreshing and she ought to teach some of her fellow students one or two things about respect. Maybe she could even teach some of the Professors about it too. Merlin knew a few of them really needed it.

He was glad to see that she had already started studying as it put her in a good position. "Then you're already a few steps ahead of other Fifth Years," it was meant to be a compliment... As close as James would probably get to one. It took more than just one office visit and a few right answers to merit that sort of praise.

And her answer to his question regarding internships or summer jobs hadn't caught him by surprise. It was still early and most places wouldn't take anyone under their Fifth Year. However, Fifth Years themselves were perfect candidates. "I still have a few contacts from University..." he nodded, writing a note for himself on a spare piece of parchment. "I'll see what I can do," he gave her another small hint of a grin.

Twice now.

"Anything else you want to discuss?" He had done a lot of the talking here, which was a rarity in itself. He considered her briefly, wondering if she had any pressing questions they hadn't touched on.

Oh, was she now? Her studying habits had always been a little at a time. Slow and study reading over everything. Nothing got overlooked and things she needed to work on more got marked and checked up on at a later time. Hearing this though made her slightly more proud of herself and the light smile that graced her lips for a few moments was all showed this.

If bouncing about in her seat would've been something she could've gotten away with just then surely she would've been doing so. However this was important and Professor Draper was a 'tougher' man. One she wasn't about to anger when his help would get her further then anyone elses right now could. "That would be amazing Professor, thank you," she responded politely a warm grin tugging at her lips yet again this time she allowed it to stay. She was very happy with this.

Hmm. No, none that she could think of. "I don't believe so. Is there anything I should keep in mind or work on in order to further my chances in this career?" Anything at all. It didn't even matter what it was.

Yes she was. Most students didn't start studying until the night before. Didn't need any statistics to confirm it. Just a fact of life. James would know. He was a student once. Hardly managed any passing scores in his time. Which was to say, didn't mean the procrastination wouldn't come without a price. Those tests were brutal. So he was rather impressed that Miss Lynch had been off to an early start, though there was always potential that she had been lying. Only time would tell on that front.

Refraining from bouncing was a good idea. Lynch was smart. There was no doubt in that. "I can't make any promises," besides, he didn't do commitments anyways. "But I'm sure one of my contacts will have suggestions." Yeah, he knew people. No one who he'd be willing to reach out to from his Hogwarts' days, but there were plenty from Uni to reach out to.

"As long as you continue excelling in your coursework as you have been doing," he paused, "I see no reason as to why you wouldn't make a competitive candidate." The highest compliments coming from James Draper, okay?

Promises weren't needed. Just his saying he would look into it, make note or simply let someone know she what she was looking for was more then she could really ask for. This was a large step in the right direction and whatever assistance she could manage with moving forward would be very much accepted even if she wasn't one that liked help. "That's alright Professor, I really appreciate this." Truly she did.

Cue large smile! Hadleigh was incredibly happy right now. Why shouldn't she be? That was a compliment. A awesomely wonderful splendid compliment from a not always smiling happy type Professor. This day was glorious and nothing was going to dampen her mood now. "I will Professor." Promise. Nothing would cause her to mess this up. Nothing!

With all her questions asked and answered there was nothing more for her to do other then take her leave. Getting to her feet she smiled at James once more and hitched the strap of her bag up higher on her shoulder. "I'll leave you to your work now since I'm sure you were probably busy. Thanks again Professor Draper and your dog is really cute by the way." Hady glanced towards said doggy and even gave him a little wave. Cute thing he was.

He watched in amusement as he noted the change in her demeanor from the first few minutes when she had walked in. It was an interesting change. Her confidence had certainly skyrocketed and she was now emulating happiness. Qualities many others didn't leave his office with. Office visits were normally nasty little chores, James found.

This one, however, wasn't terribly unbearable. It was pleasant.

"I'll see you in class, Miss Lynch," he said with a nod before looking over at Merlin who looked entirely too smug. James gave him a single look to translate 'Oi, don't let it go to your head'. Stupid dog.

It was a vicious cycle.

A vicious cycle with occasional interruptions like a knock on his door. Or three.

James was starting to notice a pattern with some of his students. Who knocked once. Who knocked twice. There were some that liked to keep a melody. Others who chose not to knock at all. It was starting to become a game now, seeing if he could name the face before even seeing it. As he considered who this possible visitor could be, he lazily flicked his wand over at the door and called, "Come in," not bothering to look outside.

OOC: Come play in our office pls thnx

Oh she most certainly would come in. At first, it was a very determined strut into the room. A walking method which was abruptly interrupted by how blooming cold it was in the office. Did the man know? Surely he did! After all, he'd worked in a jungle before, so one would think that he preferred the cold.

And to Amur, at the moment and with her head where it was, that could only mean one thing.....

In a second, her wand was in her hand and ready to be pointed at the Professor. It hadn't quite made it up to 'pointing-level' yet though, because really she wasn't entirely sure. And it was always a good idea to be entirely sure before facing off with any of the Hogwarts staff.

Her eyes narrowed, her lips pressed into a thin line and she scrutinized the man for all she, and he, was worth. To cast, or not to cast?

"What did I feed the augurey the first day we met?" HA! Take that Professor Impostor! Or should she say, Impostor Professor!

James was not a man easily caught off guard. He didn't jump at the sudden wand pointing, nor did he show any hint of surprise at the harsh accusatory looks. In fact, he only looked up when she posed her question.

A faint ghost-of-a-smilie graced his lips, whilst he debated whether or not to laugh out loud. He chose against it, however, it was tempting. "That's hardly any way to greet a Professor," he replied coolly. This particular student was among one of the more amusing Hogwarts had to offer. The Care of Magical Creatures Professor often prided himself on being able to read others easily, but Amur proved to be more of a challenge.

And yet again, he found himself wondering what exactly was going on in that complex mind of hers. He could practically see the gears in her head turning full force. "And I believe, attempt to feed would be the better question," he momentarily returned his gaze to the stack of papers, which he pushed to the side. This was far more interesting. "Not fans of celery, you see."

He wasn't even phased! Seriously, what was with this guy? Most Professors would be on their feet making all sorts of flailing hand motions and harsh statements. Professor Draper may as well just have said 'hey'.

It had Amur admittedly stumped for a moment, caught between indecision and a hard place. He seemed like the Professor she remembered, but then people could seem any way they wanted, couldn't they?

Her grip tightened on her wand and she tried not to shift. What eased her mind a little bit, was his answer. He was right. Attempt was totally the right word. Her lips worked in a moment of indecision, before she turned and shut the door behind her.

The wand stayed out though. She didn't know many spells, but she was full willing to bet that Draper wouldn't be so cool and collected as a cucumber if his desk suddenly turned into a dragon. Actually, that thought was highly tempting. She might get some quick, straight answers and cut around all the hedges that adults liked to put up.

Taking a few steps into the room, Amur eyed the man very carefully. "What was I wearing on my feet the first day we met?"

Maybe she should ask if he thought she was 5'5" or pushing 5'6" too?

Why had she been so nervous about coming here? Now that the 'meeting' was over Hady really couldn't figure out what her problem had been before. It all turned out nicely. Better then nicely in fact. If all things went well she could very well have some type of internship or even a small job this up coming summer. Things were wonderful.

With another light smile Hady nodded her head in return. "Yes Sir." No doubt about it she would be in class. Now it was time for her to continue on and return to her studies. One more glance to the dog and she was gone having walked out of his office.

Was his answer not good enough? He raised a single brow, watching her. The way she scrutinized him with her eyes said it all. There was something incredibly taxing going on in that head of hers and James couldn’t exactly pin point what it may be. But whatever it was, was amusing.

He watched her carefully as she stepped further into the room. Her moves were very calculated and his could be too. However, he remained as calm as ever. Like this was the way most of his students chose to greet him. He was sure that the calmer he stayed, the more annoyed she’d grow. It was a very amusing game they were playing here.

”Was my first answer not satisfying enough?” he watched her. Of course this answer was even easier than the first. Barefoot. It was her nickname now, after all.

Nice kid,' he thought now turning his attention back to the pile on his desk. It was one of the more pleasant office visits this term. Most of them were like pulling teeth, but this was easy and to the point. He could use more of them.

The door shut behind her and once again he was left to grade papers. Joy.

Amur stopped in her tracks. Her eyes narrowed. Her nostrils might have flared a bit. What he didn't see was the cold sweat that trickled down her spine.

She should have brought back-up. Why had she not brought back up?

Silly, foolish child.

She straightened her own, singular back. Held her wand a bit tighter. Spoke with all the calm courage she could muster. "Are you asking as a Professor, or because you don't know the answer?"

... So they were still at it then? Barefoot looked like she wasn't about to let her guard down anytime soon. And as amusing as this all was, there was clearly something bothering her. Her eyes, they said it all. The scrutinizing look, as if she felt threatened.

And though he couldn't see the cold sweat that was trickling down her spine, he could see how alert she stood. A tiger ready to pounce. If she had fur, it would be standing upright.

He was still amused, but not entirely anymore. There was real concern she was feeling here and he felt a trickle of it too. So he raised his brows, leaning back easily in his chair. "As a Professor, I'm glad to see you chose to wear shoes this time." He nodded at her feet. "You got off easy in the barn. And here you had me thinking I'd have to write you up for violating dress code again."

So to answer her previous question: She wasn't wearing anything on her feet when they first met.

So she could stop gripping her wand like that. Thing ought to break with that tight of a hold.

See, that wasn't really an answer. It was a bit like beating around a bush with a broom. He hadn't answered her direct question, and Amur was of the mindset of letting him know just as much. However, technically, his answer was right and there wasn't much that she could hold onto in that regard.

A discontent huff let her and she averted her eyes briefly. Her hold only tightened on her wand. Determination seeped into her and she returned her gaze to meet his eyes as levelly as she could manage. "Write me up, or boil me in a stew?"

That's right. She still wasn't entirely convinced this wasn't the hag in hiding. After all, there were things called pensives, weren't there?

Maybe he ought to just spell out the answers. Though he was starting to doubt that she would even accept that. This one was an interesting character. He'd give her that much.

However, what she said next sounded so entirely ridiculous that he couldn't even suppress an audible laugh. "Boil you?" And then he understood. Sort of. Again, he laughed. "Last I recall, I was a part of the rescue team." So they were taking the 'not trusting' thing back to square one, yeah? Shame. He leaned back in his chair, easily.

And besides, "I'm more for boiled vegetables," he nodded slowly. "Children don't do me any good if they can't participate in my lessons." Which would be difficult to do if they were sitting in a child-stew.

He gave her a curious look. Her turn.

That laugh. Admittedly, she liked that laugh. It had made her feel somewhat comfortable with the man when they had first met. It was an honest, genuine, sort of laugh.

However, today she couldn't let herself be fooled by wants or past perceptions. She had to find out the truth. She steeled her resolve. Especially when the mention of vegetables came into the equation. That was enough to disarm anyone!

"Last I recall, the hag disappeared when that rescue team showed up." And yes, her recollection was more than a bit fuzzy. "If I were an ugly thing like her, I'd totally morph into something, someone, less..............suspicious."

Totally.

Folding her arms, Amur gave the man an unimpressed look that bordered on hurt. "Apparently we were participating in that lesson." It was a lesson, did he know? "We were very active....ingredients."

Honestly, it felt as though they were playing a game here. One in which James couldn’t win no matter what he chose as his next move. And that’s precisely why he hadn’t given her any direct answers thus far. Did it really matter if he did? She was incredibly Gryffindor. They didn’t take answers that were given to them, had to figure things out on their own. He’d know, he was also one of those.

Though in this case, it was incredibly taxing.

He was about to jump on her recollection, when she went ahead and said…. that. Though it was more about what she didn’t say. There was a very amusing implication she had just made there. And he acknowledged it with a very smug sort of look. ”Oh?”

He watched her carefully, considering what her next move would be. This was one of his favorite games to play with his students. Guessing what they’d do next, whether they were as predictable as James often made them about to be. Amur was a little different in that respect, he’d give her that.

Again, she managed to get another laugh out of him. ”Fair enough,” he nodded. ”But I suppose if you really thought I was a threat, you would’ve made a move by now.” He continued to rest back easily in his chair. ”And if I really was a threat, I would’ve made mine by now as well.” He glanced down at his watch before looking back up at her.

It’s been an awfully long time keeping unnecessary chit chat going if she did really suspect him as much as she let on. So either she was scared or some part of her didn’t actually believe it. He bet on the latter.

"Hello Professor!" Kitty smiled shyly at Professor Draper and walked through the entryway into his office. BRR!! It sure was cold in here, but Kitty didn't say anything because she knew from Draper's classes that he didn't like when students complained about the cold. Instead she buried her hands in her long robe pockets and sat down on one of the chairs and waited for Rachel to come in.

Should she start with why they were here? Kitty didn't know if Rachel wanted to be the one to bring up her pet, so Kitty started with a more general question. "Rachel and I have pets back at home that we really, really, really want to bring to Hogwarts next term - but they aren't on the list of official Hogwarts pets. I have nine friendly earthworms and Rachel has a husky. Oh no, it wasn't a husky..."

She looked at Rachel in embarrassment as a surge of unexpected shyness overcame her as she realized that she had forgotten what kind of dog Rachel had. Where it came from she did not know, but all of a sudden she felt like she was back in Romania, afraid of teachers and of making mistakes.

Had she just ruined everything?

#Late xD Kitty & Drapes!

Rachel could help but smile as Professor Draper ushered them into his office. Yes, she knew he was grumpy but she still liked him. "Hello, Professor,'' she greeted, echoing Kitty. "How are you?'' She stepped into the office, noticing the dog on the cushion by the table. "Oh, he's so cute! Can I pat him, Professor?'' She did love doggies so much.

But they weren't here to pat doggies. She and Kitty were here on a mission. Rachel nodded as Kitty launched into the reason for their visit. "A Jack Russel terrier,'' she corrected with a smile. "Like Kitty said, Professor, we're wondering if we're allowed to bring them? I'd be happy to keep him in the barnyard or wherever you want him to be. I understand if I can't bring Barkley but can Kitty bring her worms?''

The younger eagle looked up hopefully at the man towering over them. Please say yes.

James allowed the two girls to make their way inside before letting go of the door and walking in himself. When he did, he walked straight towards his seat. He nodded at Kitty and turned towards Rachel as she spoke, "Not bad," and ah, she found Merlin. "Sure," luckily Merlin was much more willing to give love than James was.

And before he knew it the other girl was speaking again. He much preferred it when they visited the office one at a time. It was much easier to follow. But he wouldn't kick them out and make them come in one by one. He wasn't quite that cruel. Kitty had loads to say which wasn't all that surprising considering her house. Anyways, he ought to start paying attention now, yeah? Maybe. Something about a ... husky?

James raised his brows slightly, watching the girl carefully. And now she was going quiet. Right when she had gotten his attention.

Right.

At which point the other child took over. He didn't say anything right away, instead letting them think over it for a bit. "You can bring... worms," he nodded. Why the child had pet worms was absolutely beyond him. Worms? That was the least exciting pet ever imaginable. Typical Ravenclaws. That was aside from the point here, however, as the real matter at hand still remained. "Rachel, why do you want to bring your dog here?" No malice in his voice whatsoever, it was a genuine question.

He needed to understand the situation a little better if they were going to come out with a plan here, yeah?

"Thank you Professor Draper!" Kitty beamed at the professor and at Rachel as she was given permission to bring her precious worms to Hogwarts next term. Now she wouldn't have to worry if they were being well taken care of, and her mom wouldn't be annoyed at having to feed them after getting back home from work. And she could show them to her friends!

Trying not to look too excited, Kitty asked her next question. "Do you think I should keep them in the barn, or in the common room? I just want them to be safe, so whichever one works better is fine with me." All that mattered was that they would be at Hogwarts and she would get to see them everyday.

Now all they had to do was convince Professor Draper to let Rachel bring her Jack Russel terrier to Hogwarts. Kitty thought it was best to let Rachel answer the question first, and if Draper wouldn't budge then she would come in and try to argue (respectfully) in defense of Rachel's pet.

Kitty & Drapes!

Rachel barely contained an excited squeal within when Professor Draper said that Kitty could bring her worms to school. Instead, it came out more like a squeak. She when pink in the cheeks and cast a glance at the man. He was sure he disapproved of excited squeals or squeaks.

Oh! A question for her. Rachel didn't needs to think twice. "I miss him, Professor. I miss his little barks, him bouncing around at my feet, his licks on my cheek,'' she said simply. "I miss hugging him.'' As she said this, she absently hugged Draper's dog gently as she watched up at its owner. "I have his picture but that isn't enough sometimes. He really is a well behaved dog, Professor. I promise he will not cause any trouble.''

She gave draper hopeful looks with those big, brown eyes of hers.

Sure, kid. James just nodded.

The child had just found out she could bring her worms to school with her and yet she was acting as if the impossible had just happened. Look kid hate to break it to you but they are just worms. Nothing special. If Kitty really wanted to, she could literally walk out side and pick some out of the dirt. They were worms, not fairy unicorns. Worms. Found all over the world in the ground, worms. Super useless and very dirty, worms. Five centimeters long and slimy, worms. More common than than finding a book in the library, worms. Just worms. They didn't even DO anything. She could take it down a notch he was sure.

........."Considering they are incredibly small and harmless," he wanted to add a 'pointless creature to have as a pet' but he felt that was perhaps too much, "you can keep them with you as long as they are kept in a small carrier." They were just worms after all. JUST WORMS.

Were all Ravenclaws this ridiculous? Because he has yet to meet one that wasn't.

"I'm sure he is Ms. Watson," however, "but unfortunately if I allowed everyone to bring their well-behaved pets to school simply because they are missed, we would run out of room in the barn. Space is limited." And priority stalls went to the school's creatures. Still there wasn't malice in his voice though his tone may have come off as slightly harsh. It was just who he was as a person. What made her puppy so special that it should be given this priority? "It would be unfair to give this permission to one student and not the others. Don't you think?"

The worms were different. They were WORMS. Do-nothing-but-sit-and-wiggle WORMS.
