Well.... Char didn't specifically KNOW. She hadn't learned about them yet soooo she just sat back and looked around with great curiosity. This was new to her, she hadn't already learned about these creatures like some people seemed to have.

She shot significant looks right back at her BFF though.

It was like they had ESPN or something.

BanaBatGirl 02-19-2016 11:52 AM

Of course they wouldn't have time for Davie's question. ANYONE ELSE'S QUESTION was valid, but his just had to be saved for office hours... office hours which Davie had conveniently been kicked out of and banned from, more or less... :whut:

The second-year shared another ESPN glance with Char, and then sighed deeply as he raised his hand to contribute again. "Flying seashorses were used in this inhumane game called flying seahorse fishing," he offered begrudgingly. "In the 'game,' if you could call it that, Hogwartians used the seize and pull charm to harvest the seahorses for potions ingredients."

hermygirl 02-19-2016 11:58 AM

Sam didn't know much about flying seahorses, it had to be said. But it'd be silly if she did, because otherwise, why would she need to be sat in this lesson? It was cool they lived in the lake though. Were they going to catch some in the jars?

As for answering the question? She had read an article in the newspaper once about mundane seahorses, and she figured these might be the same. "They 'av a role reversal thin' goin' on, don't they? Cos d'males give birf to the baby 'orses."

RandomRaven 02-19-2016 12:17 PM

Well, Ava didn't really know about flying seahorses, or seahorses in general. She wasn't a type of student who's gonna read the book before the class started and being a know-it-all person, unless those topics are related about DADA, dueling and healing potions. (thanks to her father for the last one.) Sometimes she thought if those know-it-all people really needed to go to the class anymore because clearly, the main purpose of being in a class is to get some knowledge, right?

"Well... Since they live in water, I think fish and flying seahorses come from the same class..." The young lioness gave an opinion.

FearlessLeader19 02-19-2016 01:16 PM

Rachel hardly dared to believe her eyes. Had Professor Draper really given her a tiny smile? No, it couldn't be. He didn't smile much, did he? But then again, that didn't mean he didn't smile on occasions. She decided her eyes weren't playing tricks and smiled back. He definitely had liked her answer.

The eleven year old's hand shot into the air again after a moment. "Katherine is right when she said they are native in Scotland but they are most commonly found in our Black Lake,'' she said with an inclination of hear head towards the said body of water.

Kolyander 02-19-2016 01:40 PM

Hadleigh smiled lightly glancing at both Jace and Esme. Their replies went along quite well with the one she had given therefore the three of them had made a nice solid point. Not to bad really.

The next question though was something she paused to think over. Two good answers so far meant she couldn't mess this one up, it had to be just as good if not better then her previous replies. There was just one problem though with this...she had no idea what to say. Chewing her bottom lip in clear thought for probably a second to long while going over everyone else's replies in her head the fifth year finally raised her hand. "I believe they eat much smaller invertebrates, sucking them into their mouths whole." If this was right she wasn't fully sure but it did make sense to her so hopefully it was.

Daydreamer11 02-19-2016 01:50 PM

Janelle was officially bummed. Everyone had pretty much covered all of the possible answers on the previous question and she was left silent. No intelligent answer given. This was her absolute favorite class and she couldn't come up with one coherent answer. That was not good. However before she was able to dwell on that fact too long, a new question was posed. Determined not to be left out this time she raised her hand.

This point had been mentioned during the previous discussion, but Janelle thought it was important enough to focus on again. "Flying seahorses......fly, of course. But that makes them different from the other lake creatures. They can survive outside of the water. The seahorses get oxygen from the water when they are in the lake. When they are flying they must have other means to breathe." Janelle thought that all of the other creatures would need to stay in water to live.

DuckyLinJi 02-19-2016 02:04 PM

The Head Boy kept writing in his little note book, wanting to document as much as possible which could help him during his NEWT’s in a few months. While he was doing so, his eyes caught the sight of the quill Katherine was writing with and he smiled. He remembered that quill, they had bought it together. He didn’t say anything though because he didn’t want to interrupt the class.

He had been very disappointed in the Professor’s reaction though. The Gryffindor had expected him to look surprised at least by his rescue team comment but he had only gotten a mere glance over. And yes, he definitely looked annoyed again. Couldn’t they just start the activity instead of all these questions?

Flying seahorses. He knew a thing or two about these creatures thank merlin. “flying seahorses are potion ingredients and i read that in order to catch them, the students had made a game out of it"

Holmesian Feline 02-19-2016 03:58 PM

Yeah, Olivia had become aware of the various species of creatures on the grounds. Mostly through previous classes though a few on her own visiting the creature area as she explored the school in her free time. She preferred to listen though, especially as her classmates around her were already speaking of the ones she thought of. The Ravenclaw was copying them all down into her notes however, her list roughly based off of the one appearing on the board.

Flying seahorses?!

Now those seemed cool. A combination of air and water in one animal but not quite like water fowl the most common example. At least that was her first interpretation of the name. But first they were talking about the characteristics of lake creatures, and as Olivia listened, she got the impression, the flying seahorses might remain more fish. Again went the notes onto her parchment and when the last question was raised, the first year tried to think on some sort of answer. At least something new.

Had Chantel ever mentioned them…

Hey Ju 02-19-2016 04:47 PM

Matt shrugged at a random girl who said she didn't agree with his answer. He didn't mind her saying that because just SAYING it didn't change anything. Water creatures were still evil no matter what any girl said.

And a matter of opinion?? "Nuh-uh, it's a fact." He stated seriously. He was being SERIOUS here. People's opinions wouldn't change ANYTHING. "I mean, they breathe UNDERWATER. That's not NORMAL."

asdfkfjldnkljsfl HORRIBLE CREATURES.

The next question was specifically about Flying Seahorses and what they knew about them. Truth was, Matt knew hardly anything about the creatures. "I guess they aren't that bad. IF they are tiny like normal seahorses and don't like being around people."

MysteriesOfFate 02-19-2016 04:53 PM

Madge sat silently, wide-eyed thinking, and looking vaguely in the direction of the professor. She was already lost. She knew nothing of magical creatures, she had never even seen or heard of a flying seahorse before this class.

Callie 02-19-2016 05:16 PM

Drapes' smug little nod was only met with the dirtiest of looks. From a girl who was an expert at giving dirty looks. She was not fooled by him. The others might be, but she wasn't.

Haddie said nothing about the topic of flying seahorses. She hadn't even known they were a thing until now. She did have a question though. Did they actually flying, or was it like flying fish, where they just jumped out of the water in a way that gave the impression of flying. She was very curious about this, but wasn't about to ask it. There wasn't any way she was going to give him that satisfaction. Instead, Haddie just folded her arms across her chest, even more than they had been, and kept giving Draper that look of utter disdain.

keepmeclose22 02-19-2016 05:25 PM

Austin had been called on again, and this time he wasn't in trouble. That was a good thing, right? Since he had answered the question early, and he didn't know much more about flying seahorses, he just went on sipping his tea. But he wasn't going to doze off this time. Not today. Today he was going to pay attention, hoping to gain something from his peers. The professor was paying attention to him, making sure he didn't fall asleep. So that was the last thing he was going to do.

How did they breathe in the air? He thought to himself. Animals underwater have their own way of storing oxygen, through gills and what not. So maybe they store oxygen when they jump in the air? Their circulatory system must have a way to use the oxygen underwater.

WhittyBitty 02-19-2016 06:27 PM

The nod was enough to let Esme know that she had made a good point. Of course she had. Some people were acting like the creatures that lived in the lake were EVIL. They were just beasts - as Hady already pointed out - and lived among themselves in the way that people did.. Hags on the other hand... THOSE were evil. They threatened people and ate children. How much worse could you get than THAT?!

Flying seahorses weren't her strong suit but she DID know about them.

Listening to what others had to say Esme nodded along. There wasn't really much else that she could add to it. Instead she made note of everything since it might come in handy for later. Hopefully they would be moving on to the activity soon because she would much rather interact with the seahorses than brainstorm facts about them. That seemed to be something much more suited for Teddy.

Ameh 02-19-2016 10:03 PM

There were so many answers going around. Jaemin listened to his classmates while he tried to remember things that he actually knew about the seahorses. He'd seen them a few times, but not really... up close and personal-like. And plants were his strong suit, not lake creatures. They weren't fuzzy. He was less interested if it didn't have roots or fuzz.

Other students kept mentioning the breathing thing though, which made Jaemin wonder. The small boy wrinkled his nose and looked up at the professor.

"Do they really breathe outside of the water though? There's lots of creatures that come out of the water to do stuff and then go back in after a little bit. They don't breathe the regular air though, they just... kinda hold their water breath, right? Sort of the opposite of what humans do."

Goblinfrog 02-20-2016 01:19 AM

Kitty had never heard of flying seahorses before so she kept silent, but she knew she would love them. It was good to know that they were in the Lake because now she could go looking for them when the weather got warmer.

pundantic 02-20-2016 01:39 AM

Chloe flushed in embarrassment. The only thing she properly knew about them was that they lived in the lake. She wasn't as interested in magical creatures as she should have been in her studies. Especially for someone whose father's job dealt with animals. Loosely.

For the second time around, Chloe was reduced to silence. But she dutifully scribbled down everything everyone said about the creatures.

Anna Banana 02-20-2016 02:15 AM

OHHH, she was on the right track now! At least...she got a response from the professor, and he didn't just nod along and seem annoyed. This earned a fidget in her seat from Ariadne. She was getting super EXCITED and really into the lesson now. What did she know about flying seahorses? Well, ...nothing. It was the start of the lesson, and she had STUFF to learn!

She had one small little detail to offer, though, so she raised her hand. "When it's not flying and actually in the water, it uses it's curly-shaped tail to propel itself along," she said. As she explained this, she made a little waving motion with her hand. She was trying to show the motions she'd learned it did--it's curly-shaped tail would straighten out a little, and then it would re-curl the tail to help it move along in the water.

...and that was all she knew so far.

Steelsheen 02-20-2016 04:29 AM

Oh so they were talking about the equine counterparts of the lake. Which is FANTASTIC for this curly top as he was a fan of all things equine.

So what factual tidbit does he know about them? Well other than the obvious fact that they flew AND are inhabitants of the lake? A fact already pointed out in this discussion by the Professor himself no less.

"Uhm some of the mariners and fishermen that hang around the lake near my home says they catch flying seahorses and put them in stews, or if they're super fresh, they can just pop them in a beer batter then fry them and eat them like chicken nuggets." True story.

WeasleyGirl 02-20-2016 06:57 AM

People knew a lot about creatures. A LOT. Hugo on the other hand...well, he knew some facts, yeah. He wrote down everything or almost everything 'cause he knew he was going to need it for his OWLs, also he already had someone to study with. Cough. Where was Jenna? Anyways...

Hugo was wondering what they were going to do for the activity. Maybe go and find creatures? That would be cool. And why were they talking about Flying Seahorses? Did Draper brought some of them? Were they going to feed them? Take care of them? Maybe that's what the jars were for. He didn't raised his hand on this question because everyone had already said what he also knew, so he listened instead.

James took note of those choosing to remain quiet for this particular question. As long as no one was falling asleep, they could stay quiet. He didn't care about that much. However, they'd have to start participating in a minute because the Q&A portion was nearly done. And James wouldn't allow anyone to sit idle for the rest of the lesson. Not unless they wanted points taken off their grades.

Hmm. "But...how do you provoke them to break out of the water, professor?" he did read about the creature, but didn't bother to know it more. It was evident that Jace was a tad disappointed he didn't know. He was the student who offered the correct answer in the first place anyway.

James nodded, giving the younger boy confirmation to the information he offered about their harvesting. And he wasn't at all surprised when the kid raised a question. It was also a good question. They didn't get much of those. "Well, their flight in response to being provoked is first and foremost their defense mechanism. It's their response to a threat in order to get out of any danger they may deem immediate." Did that much make sense? "For the purpose of harvesting, they can easily be raised to the surface with the introduction of bait, or the use of a seize and pull charm into the water can pull them up. They aren't often caught when flying in the air." He paused momentarily to make sure that he had answered the boys question adequately. Did all of that make sense? "And take two points for the deeper thinking," questions meant deep thought. James liked that.

James considered this one for a few seconds before nodding and commenting, "That's not a far-fetched assumption to make." He nodded. It was a fair thought. However, "We can't, however, assume that right away. As the Seahorses show much different characteristics than your traditional fish would. It wouldn't be entirely correct to classify them as the same. But we can most certainly say they most likely derived from a common ancestor." He nodded, not discrediting her idea. Instead simply offering some more perspective to it.

James gave this boy a hard look in consideration. Had his parents taught him that? Because in most experiences, James found parents to be annoyingly difficult. Passing on crazy superstitions to their children without having any accurate background to pull out that kind of information. "Well, again, opinion," he replied easily. "Breathing underwater may not be normal for us, but for a creature who knows nothing else but the water. It's their normal." And if he didn't want to believe it now, then they'd have to wait and discuss one-on-one. Because James was done with this matter. It would be a ridiculous waste of class time to discuss these sorts of philosophies when he had an entire lesson to address.

"Good question," James nodded, giving it a few seconds of thought. "They don't ever stay out of the water for very long. So you're right, their presence under water is where they do most of their breathing." He did have some more to add though, "though they do have means of breathing outside of water, it's a much weaker system. Like a plan B, if you will. It's their backup system if they need to be above water for longer than they'd be able to hold for." However, because they never stayed long it was hardly ever needed to kick in.

Had that answered the question?

Not confirming nor denying. Let the kid dream.

"Flying Seahorses can fly when they are provoked." He wanted that ability, so that he could rise into the air if people annoyed him. Though to be honest, he was rarely annoyed.

Sooooooo, this time, as there was little information that could be given about them, she raised her hand as soon as she finished writing.

James nodded along taking note of each answer. "Very good," he responded to all the answers. "You're all correct." Even Backpack Boy, surprisingly enough. It was hard to memorize all the facts all in one go, but there were a few key takeaways that would hopefully stick. And just to reinforce it, James waited for them to settle down so that he could add some more detail. "Flying Seahorses are a variant of regular seahorses and will share many similar characteristics to those seahorses found in muggle communities as Miss Tyler pointed out." He waited for the notetakers to write things down. "They are known for their ability to fly when provoked. It's their main means of defense as they are otherwise quite harmless creatures."

Were they getting all of this? Good. "As Miss Moss pointed out, they are native to Scotland and Miss Watson also mentioned that they are most notably found in our own Great Lake." Thus their change in location for the day. "As Mr. Truebridge mentioned, Hogwarts used to participate in an inhumane recreational practice of flying seahorse fishing as a sport. However, the sport has since then been discontinued." For all the environmentalists in the area. They could all sit down before they got their knickers into a knot.

*****

Alright, finally. It was activity time. Well almost. And good thing too, James was growing tired of all of these questions. Almost as tired as the kids inevitably were. Right then, moving on. "Alright, so I think that's enough for our discussion portion." Were they cool with that? Good.

"As we mentioned before," both himself and the infamous David Truebridge, "Flying Seahorse Fishing as a sport is very inhumane. However, if done for the purpose of harvesting for potions... It is often times necessary. As it was mentioned earlier, our Great Lake has a certain quality of balance. If one component is off or in excess..." he looked around, "It could be very bad for the rest of the community in the lake." Understood?

Hopefully.

He didn't want to go over it again. He had spoken enough.

"And as it is, the Flying Seahorse population hasn't been kept in control very well in the past few years. And thus, we're going to help with that control factor." Make sense so far? He wondered how many of them saw where this was going... "Before we get to do any of that, you'll need to have practiced the Seize and Pull Charm." It was normally taught at a third year level, however, it wasn't anything too complicated. And this class was meant for the more advanced ones as well, so those younger could hopefully handle it. Or maybe he was giving them too much credit again.

Only one way to find out.

"The incantation for this charm is KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum and the movement is simple and whip-like," he demonstrated for them. Easy enough, yeah? "I want everyone to take some time to practice the incantation and the wand movement separately." Extra emphasis on the separately.

He was cool with moving onto the activity. Interacting with the creatures was more fun than discussing about them. Wait, they were going to do the Flying Seahorse Fishing? He did not want to hurt the poor things ... but apparently it helped with the population control thing, so it probably was not all that bad either.

Carl watched Professor Draper's demonstration and repeated the incantation. "KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum. KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum. KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum." Now to put it together. "Carpe Retractum!" It was a cool incantation. Almost as cool as Aguamenti.

Out of respect, Jace forced himself not to write anything down yet, until the professor was done talking. Eyes and ears were on him the entire time, his cogs turning and processing everything that he was saying. This is new-ish information to him, well, more of a clarification since he knew about the Flying Seahorses to fly when provoked. Jace nodded once in understanding...and was able to derive a conclusion in the end. “Am I right to assume that the Flying Seahorse Fishing was deemed an inhumane sport because of the unnecessary provocation just to make it fly, and make the fishing activity more challenging?” If true, then...it is rude. Poor fishies.

The points given didn’t go unnoticed. Jace was thankful that his ears were covered with his scarf, because he knew it to be a shade of red by now. In all honesty, he did not expect that. He was just curious, that’s all. The Ravenclaw inclined his head toward the professor and said his thanks, “Arigatou Gozaimasu...” It was a feat okay?

More notes, more scribbling and more side notes were jotted down on his parchment, not minding how messy his parchment looked like. It was his habit to re-write everything on a fresh parchment during his study time, just so the information will have its second pass in his brain. It’s a Ravenclaw thing, really.

Done with his notes, he got his wand out and started to practice the wand movement. Just like in Kendo, he needed to practice the movement as perfectly as possible. No sudden and unnecessary whipping. It just has to be the right blend to go with the incantation.

Whip...whip...whip.

Jace faced the lake and practised the movement some more. Whip...whip...whip.

There had been one reason, and one alone, that Brooklyn hadn’t participated in the discussion portion of the lesson. Well, aside from the fact she rarely participated in discussions. Dot had mentioned bowtruckles, and she hadn’t felt like sounding as if she was copying. Plus, she hadn’t really had anything to say about flying seahorses. They sounded a bit like pests, really, the longer they talked about them. Any animal that needed to be kept under control sounded like a pest to her. She’d been grateful when the activity had been introduced. It meant she could actually do something aside from sitting there dwelling on the idea of pests.

Practice sometimes annoyed her, especially when it was a spell she was familiar with. The Seize and Pull charm was hardly new to her, but if she had to practice, she would. Failure wasn’t something she entertained, not when it came to spell casting, or much of anything really. She did have a respect for the professor, in her own way.

“Carpe Retractum,” she said softly, reminding herself of the pronunciation, before repeating it again a few times just because. It certainly wasn’t the most complicated incantation they had learned. She didn’t blame Professor Draper for specifying they practice each part of the charm separately either. It left less chance for any spectacularly disastrous accidental casting, and it meant she wouldn’t have to risk her own safety in the class.

Oooh his answer had been right? Well then that did made him feel a little better. That meant the Professor couldn't think of him as a complete loser. He probably thought of him as a part loser ha!

He still wanted to know why he treated him differently than all the other professors. Had it been because of their first meeting? But he had been in a bad mood at that time! And Jerkface hadn't been friendly either with his sarcasm and trying to belittle him. Hmpf!

He snapped his notebook shut and grabbed his phoenix feathered wand. He wasn't exactly happy that he too had to practise the spell as he naturally already knew it. Learned it in his second year at charms school. Faster than when they taught it at Hogwarts. Which meant he had to look for any younger years having trouble but he couldn't exactly see that until the main activity.

"Carpe Retractum" there. Enough practise. He would do the wand movement in a moment. Now he was going to see how the younger students were doing. Which also gave him reason to look at Norah. Hey, she IS younger hehe.

Ilia listened to all of the other students and just sort of watched them from her spot next to Henric.........by the mid point of each lesson she always found a few that she questioned the mental acuity and/or sanity of. So they were actually going to catch the poor little things? She frowned a little bit at the thought of it, she didn't condone harming other things. Her goal was to become a healer for creatures after all, not to harm them in any way. While she thought of the potential consequences and her own beliefs, she obeyed 'practice' for a spell which she already knew. Oh sweet Circe, what to do......"Carpe Retractum" she said aimlessly and then made the mouth motions as she thought. At least she was by Henric right now....

Given she had guessed on that last answer of hers it had been correct therefore Hady put on a small grin. The mornings lesson wasn't all to difficult of one but wanting to keep her grades as they had been she pulled out a sheet of clean parchment and a book to lean on as she neatly took down all the notes that had been listed on the board. Whether she knew the information or not didn't matter anymore, what mattered was being prepared for everything and anything.

So the Seize and Pull Charm was the days charm to learn. Simple enough really since it had been learn a term or two ago, possibly longer for her since she had a habit of teaching herself charms before hand. Either way though she would practice just as instructed.

"KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum," Hadleigh recited slowly and clearly before repeating it again a couple more times. "Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum." Not much more to it then that really.

Rachel thought she understood what was meant by the balance of the Lake needing to be in check. She wanted nothing to go wrong with the Lake and in turn the creatures living there. However, it was time for her to start practicing. She decided to start off with the incantation to the Charm.

''KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum. KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum. Carpe Retractum. Carpe Retractum.'' That wasn't such a bad or tongue- twister like incantation for which she was grateful. "Have you gotten used to the incantation, Haddie?'' Rachel asked. She was more than willing to help her friend if needed.

Having the incantation long down packed it was safe to say that Hady could move on to practicing the wand movement. Not that she needed to but she would anyhow. It was always best to be safe then sorry especially when in a class with younger years all around her. The less accidents the better.

The movement was a simple 'whip like' motion. Removing her wand from it's holster on her wrist she wrapped her fingers around the smooth wood before practicing.

Whip...whip...whip.. Once and then twice she gave it a good try. See nothing to it when you already knew what you were doing. Confident that she need not do this anymore she simply sat there on the bench waiting for the next part of the lesson.

Rachel repeated the incantation a few more times for good measure. She was particularly determined to do the best that she possibly could as the spell was a tad advanced for her. She then retrieved her wand after she was satisfied with the incantation practice.

She did the movement exactly as she had seem Professor Draper do. One whip like movement. Two whip like movements. Three whip like movements. Four whip like movements. Rachel thought she had practiced both aspects well. To actually cast the spell was an entirely different story but she was somewhat positive.

Janelle was busy taking notes on everything important that her classmates and Professor Draper said. And that was a lot of information. When the professor announced that they were moving on, she was immediately at attention. So they would be working with the Seize and Pull charm. That wouldn't be too bad, at least Janelle hoped that it wouldn't.

Copying down the notes from the board, Janelle felt that she was ready to practice. As always, the first order of business was the incantation. She was pretty consistent in her approach to practicing spells. It had seemed to work well for her so far. "Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum", she repeated slowly. It was important to get the feel of the words in on her tongue, as she enunciated each syllable. Once Janelle felt comfortable, she said the incantation at a more normal speed. "Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum." Now it was time to practice the wand movement.

"Carpe Retractum." He repeated once more, getting the hang of it. When he thought that he could move on to practicing the wand movement, he finally took out his hand from his pocket, along with his wand. Whip-like. He had never used a whip before and he never wanted to.

Holding his wand, Carl whipped the air like a cowboy. No ... he was too stiff. He did the movement one more time, bending his wrist this time. This was better! He practiced some more, whipping in different directions, but careful to not actually poke anybody with his wand.

Now came the fun part. Janelle got to channel her inner lion tamer for this one. She had seen old movies with lion tamers in a muggle circus. Did they even have those anymore? That probably wasn't a good reference, considering she was in a Care of Creatures class. Anyway, Janelle had her visual.

Holding her wand carefully she made the required motion, pretending that she was cracking a long whip. Again and again, she practiced the movement. Janelle tried not to get too flourishy with the movements. She wanted to do the proper amount of "whipping" so that the spell would work. But she didn't want to overdo it. After repeating the movement a few more times, she felt ready to put the two parts of the spell together. All she needed was for the professor to give the word.

Tia had been doodling hearts taking notes in her notebook the whole time even though she'd been quiet through the general knowledge questions and answers part of the lesson. It wasn't that she didn't understand what was being talked about or have any thoughts on what creatures needed to thrive in the water, but just that she was giving others a chance to answer.

Oh finally they were getting to the activity part; thankfully didn't involve them going into the freezing lake yet. They were just practicing the seize and pull charm; one that she was already vaguely familiar with but for the sake of it, she would still practice it. Non-verbally. Since she was confident already with her ability to complete it verbally.

"Kahr-pay ruh-track-tum" she said aloud twice, just to get the pronunciation right in her head. And then without words, she silently thought about the incantation; kahr-pay ruh-track-tum

The Professor looked like he hasn’t heard of seahorse nuggets before, and Tenacius only thought that was a great thing, because new food is always a great thing innit? Yes Top Ten Aces Rules to Live By.

But yeah its Magic time and first comes the spell. Carpe Retractum. Tenacius mouthed the words a few times to get his lips used to forming the words. Then a quiet murmur "Karpee Reetrakthem... Kar... Karpay Reetrukthem..." hmm still don’t sound right."KAR-pay Ree.. KAR-pay Ruh...TRACK.. Them." it sounds so odd. Why cant any of these be in English?

But when in doubt, write it down. And that’s what the curly top did. He took out a parchment and wrote the spell several times, each time saying it slowly and with the correct emphasis.

Finally he's used to it, at least for now "KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum" Yeah doesn’t sound that odd anymore as the words bounce around his head "Carpe Retractum."

Tucking away his wand back in his chest holster, wit difficulty by the way, since he was wearing layers, Jace got his parchment again, reviewed the spell...what it does, its wand movement, and finally the right pronunciation of the Latin words. “KHAR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum...KHAR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum...” It was a mouthful for the half Japanese, but thank Merlin he knows how to speak English. He wasn’t a total dunce when it comes to the language.

“Carpe...Retractum,” Jace closed his eyes and repeated the spell inside his head, “Carpe Retractum...Carpe Retractum...Carpe Retractum.” He knew it to be an advanced spell since, in a way, it is a form of conjuration. He simply must have his intent whole...and his wand movement and incantation flawless. He shouldn’t be worried about coordination now, right?

He got this.

The wand movement was simple enough to get the hang of; just a whip-like movement. Except that Tia didn't want to do the non-verbal incantation in conjunction with the wand movement yet, because she might accidentally pull something or someone towards her. And well, that could be bad. Though she supposed she could practice it on her notebook; though she was sure that on a living thing it might be more difficult to achieve success.

Nonetheless, she decided she would do just that.

Carpe Retractum, the Head Girl incanted in her head, as she flicked her wand in the appropriate fashion at her notebook. Nothing. Focus, focus. Carpe Retractum she incanted again.

And like magic, like her notebook was on an invisible fishing line, it flung towards her when she gave her wand a tug, like her wand was a fishing pole. She reeled in her notebook. Perfect. She did wonder what they would do with the seahorses when they caught them; was that even humane to fish them?

Alright, now that he's used to the words flowing out of his lips, it was time for some action! Which is what he always likes.

So the curly top grabbed his Alder wood out of its holster and started practicing the wand movement. Whip like yeah? Whip whip whip... Whip yo' wand back and forth back and forth back and forth...

Easy peasy. It was like fishing with a muggle fishing rod. Just lift the stick, flick it back a bit and--

-- SUDDENLY some random twig flew towards him, drop rolling and stopping by his feet.

:whaa:

What?? How?!? He wasn’t even talking! Well the words were echoing in his head because he didn’t want to forget what he just practiced but but....

... And then he looks weirdly at the Alder wood in his hand. "Was that you wand?" Because you're scaring him.

"KHAR-Peh rEE-TRACK-tum...KHAR-peh reh-TRACK-tum...” Kitty practiced reciting the spell out loud, keeping her wand in her robes so that she didn't accidentally pull anything out. "Carpe Retractum. Carpe Retractum. Carpe Rectractum."

Kitty interrupted to raise her hand and ask a question to the Professor. "What are we going to do to them after we pull them out?"

...He HAD to be joking.

Was Professor Draper suggesting that they go fishing for poor defenseless creatures in order to harvest them for potions ingredients?

Yeeeeeeah, Esme didn't want to be a part of it. Quite frankly she didn't even want to be a part of Potions either if it required her to obtain creatures so that they could be added to a cauldron. What happened to plucking hairs from them? Or waiting until they died of natural causes? She didn't care that their numbers were 'out of control'. What did it matter when they lived in the lake and kept themselves to themselves?

Under her breath she began to utter the incantation. Why pass up on an opportunity to learn a new spell when it could prove to be incredibly useful for other things.

"Carpe Retractum... Carpe Retractum... Carpe Retractum..."

The spell was easy enough. Like Carpe Diem, just swapping the Di out for Retract. So Carpe Retractem. Easy-peasy. Haddie nodded to Rachel. "Yep. Carpe Retractem. See?" She aimed the wand at a leaf. "Carpe Retractem!" The leaf fluttered a little, but that was probably more to do with the the light breeze and not her spell casting.

"Maybe I got the hand movements wrong..." Because, nope, she'd said the words right. Definitely said them right. Haddie practiced the wand movements a few times and then tried again. "Carpe Retractem!" This time the leaf was tugged forcefully in her direction. "See?" Haddie smirked, proudly.

As Esme practiced the incantation a little plan formed in her mind.

She could gather some seahorses, but she wasn't going to hand them over to Professor Newton. Nope. Instead she was going to keep them in a tank and make a little home for them in her dorm. Just as long as she made sure to give them all the food that they needed they should be safe. The only question in her mind was how to capture them without causing great distress. Jace had brought a good point with his question but really she couldn't see any other way to go about the process. Maybe she could stand in the lake and try to scoop them up in a jar?

In the meantime she would finish practicing the spell. With her wand she began making whip like motions. Whip. Whip. Whip. This was actually quite easy. If only all spells were as simple.

Austin, who had finished most of his tea, was finally feeling better about class. Nothing like a good cup of raspberry tea to wake you up in the morning. He even got up and found a spot around the other students who were practicing. Most of them were practicing on leaves, hoping to get them to move. Did they know they weren't supposed to be doing the words and movement together? Well if they didn't, they'd soon find out.

"Kahr-pay re-track-tum." He began sounding out the words. "Kahr-pay re-track-tum. Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum." He went on mumbling to himself for a few minutes, getting the flow of the spell. The teen did not want to be the only fifth year who couldn't do the spell.

Haddie glanced around at everyone else practicing the spell and her eyes fell on Ilia. Or rather, more specifically, the back of Ilia's head, since the Snake was in front of them. She gave Rachel a sly little grin, and then her face fell serious again.

Haddie turned slightly, so she was facing the back of the Snake's head, and decided she could use a bit more practice. "Carpe Retractem. Carpe Retractem. Carpe Retractem." See, just lil' ol' her, practicing this lil' ol' spell, while she happened to be, without meaning to, facing the back of Ilia's head. Haddie continued to practice the pronunciation, like everyone else was.

After a little bit Haddie switched to practicing the hand movement. Like a whip. Back and forth. Yanking the target. Yanking it hard. Yanking it like it was tethered to an invisible cord. Back and forth. Like a whip. All the while Haddie discretely focused on Ilia's hair. Her accidental target. She imagined Ilia's hair tethered to her wand. Back and forth in whip-like fashion. And now together, by total accident of course. Haddie wrenched her wand back like it was a whip. "Carpe Retractem!" Oops.

...Was this professor a broken record? He had already SAID that it was a matter of opinion and Matt had already disagreed on that. Why was he repeating himself? He knew that wouldn't change Matt's mind, didn't he? "I disagree." Just in case the professor still had any doubts.

Evil. ALL EVIL. All of them.

Anyway, activity time. Matt listened to see if they would have to go into the lake or some awful thing like that, but nope, apparently not. At least for now. GOOD. And getting the seahorses out of the water sounded safe enough, since they didn't have to go in and once the creatures were out... no matter how evil they were, they would be weak and wouldn't be able to do anything to them, right??

Not that he expected SEAHORSES to do anything to him, but STILL.

OOOHHH, Matt liked that wand movement. It kind of reminded him of Indiana Jones and that film was COOL. The Gryffindor got his wand and got ready to PRACTISE. Whip-like movement.

The seahorses really could breathe out of the water?! Jaemin stared at the professor, blinking owlishly at him in surprise. He knew they were magical creatures, but... still! Did that mean that they had more lungs than regular creatures? How did it work? Did their gills switch or something?! The response seemed to bring some of the life and energy back into the small sniffly boy. He had about six million questions and he was pretty sure this class would only be long enough to get answers for maybe four million of them. He needed to know.

Yes. Needed.

However, it seemed they were moving from the special features now, and on to the main event. Which involved learning new magic, so listening to professor was extra important. He still had some issues with making the words for the spells sound right when he was learning them. He listened closely to how the professor pronounced the incantation, mouthing it to himself silently until the man told them to practice it themselves.

"Caaaaaaaaaar. Paaaaaaaaay. Ruuuuuuuuh. Traaaaaaaaaack. Tuuuuuuum." On his first pass, the small boy deliberately over-emphasized the syllables, figuring out how to work his mouth around them. It wasn't hard, but sometimes things didn't come out just right, and spells relied heavily on that, right? He repeated it again. "Car pay. Ruh Track Tem."

The end sounded a bit off. He frowned and repeated it a few more times, putting all his emphasis on the end syllable until it sounded right; he made a note of the pronunciation next to the spell in his notebook, so he would remember it later.

"Carpe... Retractum. Carpe Retractum." that sounded like the way the professor had said it, yes. Good.

Since that wasn't a hard wand movement, Matt didn't have to practise it that much. But it was FUN! So he did. Several times and for quite a long time.

He SHOULD practise the incantation as well, he suppooooosed. Eh, boring. But he should, then fiinnneeeeee, he would. Looking at the board, the boy read the words out loud. "Carpe Retractum."

Ohh Goody!! They were going to learn a new spell! Azura was always happy about that and she was excited that she had gotten another answer right! She wasn't fully sure about what they were going to do to the Seahorses, but.. teachers knew best right?

She had to assume they did. So she was going to follow his instructions!

Now to try out the spell. "Carpe Retractum." She said out loud as she rolled the incantation around on her tongue.. "KAHR pay ruh-TRACK-tum!" That wasn't so hard at all!

"Carpe Retractum!" She sound louder and a bit more confident like! Confidence was key in spells really. She had learned that from Austin! She couldn't wait to try the actual spell out! But she of course would wait!

So wait...they were legit about to go flying seahorse fishing?! AWESOME! That was the coolest level of cool she had experienced all day. That sounded kind of lame, but Ariadne was REALLY excited about seizing and pulling a flying seahorse out of the Great Lake. It was going to be SUPER COOL! She just knew it!

So they weren't able to start right away, but they were going to start soon! First, she had to practice the incantation and wand movement. It looked easy enough, but yeah...one could never tell. Ariadne hadn't exactly gotten everything right the first time since she got here, and the last thing she wanted to do was leave class today without pulling the first flying seahorse out the Great Lake.

"Carpe Retractum!" she said, saying everything in one go. Was that right? Was every syllable there? "Carpe Retractum!" she said again. "KAHR pay ruh-TRACK-tum!" Okay. She was pretty confident with the incantation.

Post two, wand motion

Now that Azura was confident with the incantation, she got out her wand and started to make a whip like motion with it.

This wasn't too hard! She thought as she flicked her wrists like she was snapping an invisible whip!

Carpe Retractum. she thought as she whipped her wand back and forth!

Yup! She had it! Could she try now?

The wand movement was going to be a lot easier than saying the spell. He had a much easier time with this. The small boy rubbed his nose before holding up his wand and repeating the motion the others were doing. It was sort of like trying to throw a lasso, but without the spinning motion... he hummed to himself and repeated the motion a few times, snuggling a bit deeper into his coat afterward. This wasn't too difficult.

Well, that was half of it then, she guessed. Incantation down, wand movement to go. So what was the wand movement again? Just a whip? That was it? So all she had to do was remember the incantation, which was fresh on her mind, and then do a nice little whip of the wand, and BAM! Instant flying seahorse!

She suddenly wondered what she would do once the seahorse came flying at her. Just catch it with her hands? Grab a net? Try and run with a bucket and let it drop in like a quaffle? That would be the amusing part. Ariadne fished for her wand, no pun intended, and then whipped it in the same way the professor had.

Or, at least, she thought it was the same movement. She was pretty confident now that she would do this. Just to be sure, though, she whipped her wand a few more times to be on the safe side. Mmkay. FLYING SEAHORSES BEWARE! Here she comes!

Instead of moving straight into practicing the wand movement, Brooklyn decided to take a break. More accurately, she let her blue eyes flicker around, watching the others practice. Of course the Ravenclaws were trying to actually cast the charm. She stayed quiet, though, testing the professor's demeanor. He'd said they shouldn't really cast yet, that they needed to practice first. She wouldn't have minded if they lost some points.

Especially the little one targeting Ilia's hair. That was just rude, although she wouldn't have stayed quiet if it had been her hair. As it was, it wasn't and so she just watched. She watched and she considered. Finally she pulled her wand out and flicked it, like it was a whip. She had a bit of practice with that, sort of. A horse whip, not a real whip, and she hadn't gone riding in years. It still counted as practice.

Colt heard what the Professor said and made his way to practice the spell. So he tried to hear what the spell was but he couldn't. He was kind of distracted by the lake. He was seeing something pop out. Oooohh nooo wayyy it was one of the merepeople. He saw the head pop out and it made eye contact with him. He grinned and it went back under. He stared at it for a few moments and then focused his attention back to the classroom.

He saw him write on the board and thank bloody merlin. He was learning about Carpe Retractum. He knew about that one. Well he heard about it. He practiced saying the spell first, "KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum.....KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum...KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum....KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum...."

Then he pieced it all together, "Carpe Retractum....Carpe Retractum....Carpe Retractum....Carpe Retractum....Carpe Retractum." Now time to practice the wand movement.

This one took respect to an ultimately new level. It was a bit strange, however, James liked it. More kids ought to be like this one. "Partially," James nodded. "The inhumanity in the sport mainly derives from the fact that the seahorses were only used to serve the purpose of entertainment, as a game and competition." Did he see the issue with that? They were thrown around just for the fun of it. At least with a potion, they served some good use.

Kitty interrupted to raise her hand and ask a question to the Professor. "What are we going to do to them after we pull them out?"

"Depends on how many are caught," because in all honesty, James doubted they'd catch any more than four total as an entire class. "Some may be relocated to other lakes in the area," he nodded slowly. "And we may also give a few to your Potions Professor." It all just depended, really.

James was too busy addressing some of the questions to notice that some students hadn't followed instructions. Fortunately for them, he had been distracted. Otherwise, it would've been a ban from the activity all together. James didn't mess around. Again he walked towards the center, raising his voice to get everyone's attention. "Alright, now that you've all had some practice with the charm, it's time to get started. After I'm done giving instructions, everyone can go grab one of those large jars off the table." He nodded to where he had been standing before the lesson had officially started.

"You should fill your jar up with water first," they all knew the spell for that one, yes? "And then you can go ahead and find a spot to begin fishing with the seize and pull charm." And no one would fall in on his watch, got it? "This isn't easy, so do not be discouraged if you don't catch any. If you have more luck, stop after you have caught two." They were putting a limit here, got it? "You'll have the rest of class for this."

OOC: Hi! Thanks for sticking with me! Just a few last things before you get started on the activity!

+ This should take 5 labeled posts to complete
+ Make sure to include: Grabbing the jars, filling the jars with water, at least 2 attempts at using the charm, and any outcomes of it's use.
+ Be creative! Your charrie doesn't have to be entirely successful! They might find things like a string of seaweed or a lone sock
+ You will have until Tuesday at 1pm EST to complete this task! I may extend the time if it's needed.

+ IMPORTANT: I won't be around as much tomorrow, so if we could keep from having any students drowning in the lake that would be incredible. James would be making sure that no one stands too close to the edge.
+ If you have any questions or need me to clarify please shoot me a VM or a PM and I'll be glad to help!

Additionally: It's not too late to finish the mini-activity, you still have the opportunity to catch up with it until I bring the main-activity to an end!

And it was Activity Time!!!

Quickly taking down the last bit of notes from the board Hady gathered up her things and put them back into her bag neatly. She wouldn't be needing them anymore as of right now.

Listening silently to Professor Draper it was clear what needed to be done and it didn't seem all that difficult. Collect two flying sea horses in a jar filled with water using the seize and pull charm. It sounded like an easy task to her. And she already knew how to cast the charm needed but something in the back of her mind was telling her that this wasn't going to be as easy as it sounded.

Pushing the thought aside the fifth year rose to her feet and made her way to the table that was a little ways to the side and collected herself a jar for the task and checked it over. Not cracks or chips meant it was in good condition. Taking her wand from it's holster she aimed it inside the jar and cast a quiet, "Aquamenti." When it was full about three thirds of the way with water Hady cancelled the charm and turned her attention to the lake before her.

Rachel watched Haddie as she actually tried out the spell. "I don't think that's what Professor Draper had in mi-.'' She stopped abruptly, impressed with her best friend's work. "Wow. Excellently done, Haddie. Some more practice and you'll be perfect!'' Rachel was smiling but then it faltered somewhat as Haddie took aim at Ilia. "Haddie!'' She grabbed the other girl's wrist. But it was too late. Despite herself, she couldn't help but giggle. "I reason this is revenge for the dueling club meeting.'' She knew Haddie wouldn't go to the extreme to 'accidentally' hurt Ilia, however.

The Eagle turned her head back in Draper's direction. She was happy that he hadn't caught on to what Haddie had been doing. Oh! They were about to get started. Lovely! "Let's go get started, Haddie,'' she said after the instructions had been given. She collected a jar from the front. "Aguamenti,'' she said confidently. Just a teeny trickle of water leaked into her jar. "Aguamenti.'' Nothing happened this time. "Aguamenti.'' Hello, water! "Finite.'' She was ready to begin fishing now.

Its not like the wand can speak back... Or can it? Tenacius was looking suspiciously at the wand in his hand and the wand.... just stayed silent. No spark, no nothing. Maybe it was just coincidence with that twig eh?

Then again Adler wands are known for some things...

But the Professor has moved on with the next activity. Now its time for fishing! Or flying seahorse catching... thing.

He swipes a jar off the table then turns for the lake. Now what was it that the fishermen from back home always said? Location location location....

With her jar almost filled with water, Rachel went off to find the ideal Flying Seahorse fishing spot, her left arm linked through Haddie's right one. She didn't have to go far to look, of course. She simply chose one a little distance away from the spot where the class had been held. She thought that if she were around where less students were, she would have a good chance of catching at least one seahorse because less students meant less noise to scare the seahorses away. "Is this spot okay? We can always move if you want to.''

She was still worried about if the Seize and pull charm would hurt the little creatures but Professor Draper wouldn't have let them do this activity if they would be harmed... would he?

Mulling over Draper and his constant grumpiness, Rachel scanned the Black Lake. She just needed to wait now for the flying seahorses. "Do we just wait for them to fly out of the water?" she asked Haddie uncertainly. It seemed the logical thing to do so for now, she was waiting, her eyes focused on the water.

Oh no, OH NO. It was time they got near the lake. Matt was NOT looking forward to that time and he wanted to skip that bit altogether. Only he didn't. That kind of sounded cool, fishing for Flying Seahorses.

He would give it a TRY. Yas.

Breeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeathe.

No need to rush. So. First things first, which waaaas... getting a jar.

Easy enough! Matt could do that in a heartbeat. BUT he wouldn't. He took his time. He toooooook. His tiiiiimmeeeee.

The jars were all exactly the same, but Matt wanted to CHOOSE one that he'd claim to be different. It WAS going to be different in his eyes, OKAY? Okay.

Chill. Nice and relaxed, Matt was FINE. Look at him choosing a jar.

Chooooosiiiing... a jaaaaaaaaaaaar... taking his time.

Hi, jar! No, not this one... This one-! Nope. Nope. Nope. Not that one either.

Oh, okay, so they were just relocating the seahorses to another part of the lake. So they weren't just fishing them for the thrill of it; that was good. Well the part about possibly seeing if their Potions Master wanted them; Tia just tuned that part out. She didn't want to think about seahorses in her potions.

Would these jars be big enough? She guessed so, because the Professor wouldn't have told them they weren't. She didn't even know how big Flying Seahorses were; were they the size of a hippogriff or a goldfish? Or somewhere in between?

Just in case though, the seventh year not wanting to suffocate her precious seahorse and in case she caught more than one, Tia cast a quick non-verbal, "Engorgio" on her jar, effectively enlarging it so it was about four and a half feet tall and two and half feet wide. That should be good enough. She hoped the Professor wouldn't complain about her taking up too much space with the jar, but really, she just was thinking about the humanity of the seahorse.

Now time to fill the jar up with water; except would the seahorse be able to thrive on the water that came from her wand? That wasn't lake water, like what the creature was used to . . .

Right, Matt was getting bored of choosing a jar now, so he finally picked one. A random one, actually, since they were all the same.

RIGHT², water. He could do THAT, especially without getting close to the lake. He was glad they didn't have to use water FROM the lake. That would've been... not very fun. He'd still do it, though. He admited it would've been interesting. But NOPE, normal Aduamenti water it was.

"Aguamenti." Matt said as he pointed his wand to the opening of the jar and caaaaarefullyyyyyy filled it with water. He actually managed to control the quantity and the strength of the water coming out of his wand, which was a first. WOO, he was becoming a pro at this magic business. School COULD be useful, he had to admit.

Wait...

So they weren't going to give all the seahorses they caught over to Professor Newton? They could also be relocated?

Esme felt a weight lifted off of her shoulders. For a few minutes she had believed she would have to fight Professor Draper on the matter. And all for 'population control'. This... this was MUCH better. Of course there was still the problem of using a seize and pull charm on innocent creatures that didn't harm anyone and spent their lives minding their own business and not interfering with humans. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if she tried the spell out and didn't actually CATCH anything. Would she lose points for that? Honestly she didn't really give a toss either way...

Grabbing a jar, Esme used Aguamenti to fill the container with what she deemed to be a good amount of water for the seahorses. Hopefully they wouldn't mind that she hadn't used lake water but the idea had left her head the moment that she considered just how COLD it would be given the fact that it was currently late January. At least this was something?

Mini-activity catch-up / sort of / mini post 1?

Catching seahorses was a NECESSARY EVIL for potions?! Ugh! How unfair! David was torn between wanting to be the best at everything ever and wanting to protect creatures because he absolutely loved studying them!

But what the teacher said, goes, and he knew better than to mess with Draper. For now. So the obedient second-year cleared his throat and his mind, and worked to practice the spell. WITHOUT a wand. He'd learned his lesson here.

"Carrrr-pay-re-tract-um," David pronounced nicely and smoothly and steadily. Now, with more emphasis: "Kahr-pay, re-track-tum!" Once more, without the wand, then, putting it all together: "Carpe Retractum!" Yes, very good. He nodded to himself because it all sounded right, and double-checked his notes before attempting the wand movement.

Ilia was minding her own business, sitting by Henric and 'practicing' her separate words and wandwork. As she was minding her business though, someone else was not clearly. She felt her long blonde hair , tightly coiled into a bun, get tugged. Not just a gentle nudge, not some kid behind her trying to play with her hair no. It yanked, hard enough to mess up her bun and she let out a yelp.

Holding the back of her head and wincing she looked back at a couple of misbehaving eaglets. Her eyes narrowed on the pair and glared. Baby bird was holding Chirp Twerp's wrist. The little brat was probably miffed over the duel, but she needed to get over it. You don't take it out an opponent later for no reason. She was not even the person who knocked her off of the platform, she just silenced her. She'd remember it brat, her glare said as much to the child. "I believe that the professor said to practice the words and motions separately for a reason. Mind where you aim your wand and what you peep, Chirp." That would be your only warning kid.

Focusing back on the matter at hand, she rose from her seat and brushed her hand against Henric. Walking up to the desk, she grabbed a jar and walked into the grass. Now she could fix her hair....loosing her golden mane from the remaining bonds, she preened and smoothed it before just braiding it this time. There, that would do for now, back to this jar business.

OOOOH so they were doing stuff with flying seahorses?! This lesson was a lot more interesting than Scarlett had initially thought it would be. Smiling and anxiously taking notes on everything as class progressed, it was finally time to do some hands on stuff - and they were going to learn Carpe Retractum! She didn't know why, but she thought this spell was SUPER cool and was very excited to learn it.

As everyone around her hurried through the activity, she took her time. First, the incantation. She cleared her throat and repeated the spell a few times..."Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum....Carpe Retractum..." she said over and over again. Kind of hard to mess this one up...or so she hoped...

catch-up post 2! from the mini-activity

Hoping that Draper wasn't watching him too closely, Davie decided to try the spell with his wand this time. He got it out and cleared his throat, visualizing the words, "CARPE RETRACTUM!" coursing through his mind as though the words were on one of those moving Muggle sidewalks the Muggles sometimes had at aeropuertos.

He swished and flicked his wand, as though it were a crackling whip, and enunciated the phrase: "Carpe Retractum!" A beam of gold-orange light came off his wand, nice and beautiful and warm-looking. Hurrah hurrah! He loved it.

He didn't love that he was going to have to use this spell to catch lil flying seahorses, but he decided to try it again. "Carpe Retractum!" ZAP! Another beam of light. Well this was positively brilliant; could they use this spell on people, he wondered? Where was his BFF? Or his other BFF, Blaise? They could try the spell on each other to see if it actually hurt the seahorses...

Azura slowly moved off the bench and walked towards the lake's edge carefully.. She made sure that she was as far away from Jace as she could manage. He didn't need to see her. Not after everything.. So she quietly moved to the table, grabbed a jar and quickly moved over to the lake edge, where she was a bit farther out than most of the kids..

All right, she had got her jar, now what?

Oh right! Water!

"Aquamenti!" She called out and pointed her wand down at the jar..

Nothing.

And once again her wand knew that she wasn't feeling it.. Because she knew the spell and she had done it several times.. and now.

"Aquamenti! She said with a sigh..

Now that he had the spell down, Davie quietly moved up to where Draper had the jars, grabbed one without the professor's noticing, and then hurried down to the edge of the lake. Why couldn't they fill the jars up with lake water? Wouldn't that water be better for the flying seahorses? Because it would be what they were used to? He thought about raising his hand to point this out to the professor, but decided not to, because he was already running a bit behind his classmates.

Once he had his jar, Davie calmly pointed his wand inside and cast, "Aguamenti." This was one of his favorite and easiest spells, after all.

He glanced over at a girl beside him who reminded him of himself. Same robes and all. "I had troubles like that once," he told her helpfully, almost cheerfully. "Do you need a hand?" Azura sighed softly, her magic wasn't having it today because she felt totally out of it.. C'monnn.. It's a simple spell. Being rejected wasn't THAT big of a deal right?

She was pulled from her thoughts as she heard a male voice and she turned her head to see a boy next to her.. Wait.. was that.. Davie? The boy who Rachel liked? Her purple eyes went slightly wide, before slowly nodding at him.

"I do need a hand actually, my magic isn't feeling it today." She said with a soft sigh. "Thank you, I'm Azura by the way." She said with a warm smile over at him.

"Azura," Davie repeated just as warmly, so that he would remember it, "it's nice to officially meet you. I'm Davie Truebridge." He'd seen her around, of course. Around THOSE GIRLS, you know. But it was nice to have an official introduction, as long as he didn't get too embarrassed talking to a GIRL.

Now, time to explain Aguamenti. "So this spell is quite simple, as long as you can visualize what you want to achieve. Think of watery things, like waterfalls and water faucets and bathtubs and rubber ducks." LOOK AT THAT, he was starting to understand Muggle lingo! "It might help you to clear your mind if you look at the lake a bit, so that all the water gets into your mind, not literally of course, but visually, before you try the spell again. To shut off the spell, you just imagine turning your wand off, as though you're turning off a tap!"

Quite easy, quite quite. Davie glanced out at the lake as though modeling the spell, and then glanced back at Azura to see if she was ready to try it or not.

.......

The jar was filled, so that meant Matt was officially ready to fish Flying Seahorses. Okay, he could do it. He could do it, yes. He could. Right? Right?

Right, from just over.......... here. He had taken a few steps closer to the lake, but he was most definitely NOT that near it. His spell work should be powerful then, he supposed. "Carpe Retractum." He said as he did the super cool wand movement.

...Did it even reach the water? Matt blinked as nothing happened. Shrug.

Janelle finished the last of her notes. With her spell practice completed, she listened to the instructions for the main activity. They were going to be fishing for Flying Seahorses. Then Janelle wondered for a moment. Fishing implied catching something in the water, but these creatures could fly as well. Were they supposed to "fish" them out of the water, the air or both?

While she pondered that question, Janelle went up and got one of the big jars. Returning to her seat, she took out her wand and pointed it toward the mouth of the jar. "Aguamenti", Janelle said. Water poured from the tip of her wand into her jar. She waited patiently, until the jar was nearly full before ending the spell. Picking her jar up, Janelle went in search of a good spot for fishing.

After the instructions, Yoongi walked over to the table to grab one of the jars like Professor Jerkface had said. So when they got a flying seahorse they would trap it in here? Sounded easy but Yoongi knew how difficult it could be. Like fishing which required patience and patience wasn’t one of his virtues.

He moved to the edge of the lake, holding the large jar under his arm as he walked. He secretly hoped Norah would stand next to him. But she was probably going to stand near other younger kids to assist them when needed. Which was something he should be doing as well but first he needed to take care of his own task. Which was filling the jar with water.

Pouring water with a non-verbal ‘aguamenti’ in to the jar, the Head Boy turned to the lake and pointed his wand.

Oh look…activity.

Well some activity.

They were moving on from the discussion to learning some magic which was always cool. It also meant everyone was to actively participate so Olivia had to play a part. Not that she was against the matter because at least they would be moving and warming up. And learning a spell to boot. The seize and pull charm, the incantation, rough pronunciation and wand movement added to her notes for her personal reference and studying. Now into the practicing.

Separately.

“Carpe Retractum…” the first year spoke trying it out. “Carpe Retractum,” she repeated working out the feel and sounds of the two required words. “Carpe Retractum…KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum…Carpe Retractum.” Olivia spoke the words over and over, going over them over and over in hopes of mimicking the professor’s example as close as she could to ensure the correctness. Troublesome Latin and its feel on one’s tongue.

Well. WELL. What was the point of coming to class if you weren't going to get the thing done??? Matt had LEARNED a new spell and he wanted to see it WORKING. Even though he had to catch some awful yet not so awful because tiny seahorses water creature.

"Right, come on." He said as he shifted his weight from one leg to the other, eventually settling on a balanced standing position, READY to cast the spell PROPERLY. The first time he hadn't really meant it. "Carpe Retractum!" WHOOPAH!

OH, SOMETHING HAPPENED IN THE WATER, MATT SAW IT!! It hadn't been a Flying Seahorse coming his way or anything - that was what he supposed that would happen, at least - but the water splashed at the exact point he was staring at. It was either his spell that had done that, some other kid's spell or some evil water creature decided to move around that area just as Matt cast the spell.

There was no way Matt would figure out which of the options had happened, so he shrugged again. He liked to think it had been his spell, so there. It had been his spell then. Heh!

Haddie's eyes went wide with shock and she covered her mouth with hands. "Oh god! I'm so sorry, Ilia! So so sorry!" She genuinely looked horrified by what happened. "I can't believe that just happened. Rachel! Why didn't you point out where I was aiming sooner!?" She really should win an Oscar for this performance. The sheepish, embarrassed, My life is over act didn't drop until Ilia's attention turned away from Haddie again. Finally. She glanced over at Rachel and shrugged. She was smirking though. "No one picks on you but me." Okay, and maybe a little bit of payback for the Snake's gloating after the practice duel. Just a bit though.

Still grinning, Haddie followed Rachel over to the table and collected her own jar. She couldn't help but notice that for once her best friend wasn't trying to lecture her about what she did. But then, she knew her best friend would enjoy that as much as she did. Haddie grabbed a jar and aimed her wand at it. "Aguamenti!" A geyser erupted out of the tip of her black, silver and gold wand with such force that the water sprayed back out of the jar, soaking her. "F-finite!" Casting the spell with a mouth full of water wasn't easy, but she somehow managed. But now she was soaked and twice as cold as she had been. "Aguamenti." Haddie muttered sourly. A much softer stream of water flowed from Kira's tip, filling the jar. "Finite." The stream of water stopped again. "Hold this." Haddie handed Rachel her full jar of water and cast the hot-air charm, before turning the wand on herself to dry off.

"It's nice to officially meet you as well Davie." She said with a warm smile and a nod. It was one thing to know about a person and it was another thing all together to actually meet them. Azura had remained neutral in the whole Haddie/Rachel war. But she was glad they were friends again.

She was pulled from her thoughts as he tried to explain Aguamenti to her and she didn't have the heart to tell him that she knew and could perform the spell, but with her mind and her heart not in it.. It wasn't working..She had had this same problem in her duel.

Though that the last part..

"Clear my mind and look at the lake?" She repeated as she looked out at the lake for a moment, her purple eyes gazing at the water, it was gently lapping on the shore and the movement and sound was soothing to her. She pushed Jace from her mind, that ridiculous potions class and her sham of a duel and took a deep breath.

"Thank you Davie, I think that helped." She at least could focus on the task at hand now!

She looked down at her jar and then visualizing the lake in her mind and nothing else, she said.. "Aquamenti! And just like that, water started to flow out of her wand and into her jar.

"Thanks so much!! The visualizing the lake really helped out." She said as she shot the boy a grateful happy smile.

It's nice to have you back magic! She thought to herself.

So after he was done practicing the wand movement, he was now onto the wand movement. He squinted on the board to see what the teacher wrote and it was a whip like movement. Huh...he could do that. He walked away though from the big crowd and found his own spot. He got his wand out of his robes and began to practice. He whipped his wand a few times. He thought why not put it together and see if something comes out of it. He felt a little foolish waving his wand. He felt more like a cowboy.

He concentrated and said, "CARPE RETRACTUM!" and then did the whip like movement with his wand and hmm....nothing came out. Was there supposed to be a golden/orange light? Huh...well it seemed they were moving on. He went back to join the others.

Scarlett KNEW she had the incantation down. There was not really a whole lot too it - and now the wand movement. Which was really the most fun part of this whole spell. WHIPPING YOUR WAND LIKE A WHIP. THAT was what was so cool about this spell, and she was really excited to try it out! But she knew she had to just try the movement first - didn't want to get the professor all mad at her for getting ahead of herself!

She took her wand and focused on the spot in front of her, and pulled her wand back and forth sharply just as instructed. She imagined the red yellow looking magic rope hitting the spot she was focusing on. Alright, she was ready for the main activity now!

Now that Austin had the talking down, it was time to practice the wand movement. It wasn't too hard, just a simple one. He practiced it slowly at first, making sure his wand arm got used to the movement. After a few tries, he sped up his moving, eventually speeding it up to where it was one swift movement.

After a few minutes of practicing the professor told them what they were doing today. Fishing... great. The only plus side about this was that Austin was learning about where his ingredients came from. He wanted to know about what he was using, understand that they didn't just grow on trees. Weeell, some of them did, but not flying seahorses.

The first step was grabbing a jar, which he did. And with a quick "Auguamenti" He filled it with water. Step 2 was figuring out where to stand. A few of the students were already lining up along the lake bed to fish. Where would he stand?

After a while Olivia figured she was satisfied with her pronunciation of the incantation. There was only so much practice that she could do, especially since they were going to have to move on at some point so she couldn’t linger on the practice. So now she had to try out the wand movement the professor had explained and demonstrated for them all. A whip-like gesture which kinda was well-fitting given the name and action and purpose for the spell.

The Ravenclaw exchanged her quill for her wand as she retrieved it from her safe place. Starting with it pointed upwards, she tilted it forward and quickly swished it back. Then again. Upwards and back, then forward, and then whipped backwards. Over and over again Olivia practiced this move just as she had the incantation. She just had to get it good and ready for when she put it all together.

That sorted, Esme made her way slowly towards the lake.

Despite the fact that she wasn't thrilled at the prospect of grabbing innocent seahorses and containing them in a jar she was going to do this. Mostly because she realized that chances were she wouldn't be incredibly successful in the endeavor. The much more likely scenario was pulling up vast quantities of seaweed and maybe bits of rubbish tossed in by litterbugs. Even Hogwarts wasn't immune to that problem. Sadly.

Setting up not too far off from Rachel and Hady, she glanced out at the water. Yeah, she was definitely not heading any closer than she needed to. Seeing the Healer for a case of hypothermia wasn't on her bucket list so she would pass on that. Instead she kept her feet firmly planted a few feet away from the edge and used that whip like wand movement like a boss.

"CARPE RETRACTUM!"

Janelle walked around with her water filled jar, until she found the perfect spot. At least she thought it was the perfect spot. Now it was time to concentrate. Janelle looked out into the water and visualized a flying seahorse coming her way. Trying to convince herself that she could do this, Janelle was ready to give it a try.

Janelle set her jar down in front of her and took out her wand. Making the whip like motion, Janelle said, "Carpe Retractum". Annnnnd nothing. No flying seahorse, no flying water, no flying anything. Ok, so it was back to square one for Janelle. She knew this wasn't going to be easy. She was just going to work harder and focus more. If at first you don't succeed.

Oh look at that, she was getting the hang of it already! Naturally Davie thought he'd taught Azura the spell, so talented was he, that he simply beamed and nodded at her as she filled up her jar. "Good job! Now on to the whip part..." And he mostly said that to himself, because it was time for him to get this ball rolling. Even if he didn't WANT to collect wittle seahorses.

Davie cleared his mind, focused on the cool whip action of his wand, and gave it a flick toward the water. "Carpe retractum!" he cast enthusiastically, mostly just excited to see his wand do that thang again. And sure enough, it did! ITDIDIT. Where was Char. Was she watching? This was cool. This was BFF-level of cool stuff.

He'd have to try it again, only on the water now. "Carpe retractum!"

Austin eventually picked an open spot near Azura since she was one of the few people he knew. She seemed to be busy, though, so he just opted for a small nod in her direction.

Turning his attention to the water in front of him, he watched as flying seahorses started jumping out of the water. It was an amazing sight indeed. Their scales glistened in the sunlight, and reflected against the water. It took a few minutes, but it wasn't until students next to him started yelling their spells that he broke his trance. He just wished there was some way to capture this moment. Maybe he'd invest in a camera for next term.

Looking around he realized he hadn't even started gathering seahorses. Welp. Here goes nothing.

Perfect timing!

She was getting the hang of the wand movement, relatively simple as described, and Professor Draper was moving them on and introducing the main activity where it was to be put all together. Olivia listened intently to the instructions being to the class so she could duplicate it all once they were released to do so. Jar…water…spell. Easy enough, her magic just had to behave well enough for it all to work together. But first, a step that only required physical movement.

Momentarily stashing her wand securely in her pocket, the Ravenclaw got up from her seat on the benches to retrieve one of the jars from the front. Simple pimple. Once she had one on her grasp, Olivia was about to bring it back to her seat when she stopped herself. She needed to spread out and collect flying seahorses so why would she hang out away from the lake edge. And there was no point filling it up and then moving it so the first went in search of a perfect perch while still remaining among the others.

Too close…too many…

It was time for them to actually get the flying seahorses now? Oh good. The small boy stood up again and moved toward where the jars were set up as the other students were doing the same, reaching with gloved fingers to pick one up. He hugged it to his chest before moving closer to the water.

Others seemed to be filling the jars with the aguamenti spell, and the boy wrinkled his nose as he considered that. Was that really okay? Some of the students had brought up that the lake had really specific thingies about it that the creatures in the water were used to... what if he put a seahorse in the aguamenti water, and it missed its old water so much it just up and died?! Fishies were like plants with soil, right? If you didn't have the right water, or the right soil, the fish or plant couldn't really do well.

So, with a look at the professor, Jaemin slipped off his gloves and tip-toed to the edge of the lake to scoop some lake water into the jar. The small boy squatted down carefully and reaaaaaaached to dip the jar into the water; he didn't manage to fill the jar up, but it was nearly to the point it needed to be. Maybe it'd be okay if the rest was aguamenti'd? He pulled the jar back and took a few steps away from the water, looking at what he'd managed to gather before feeling around for his wand to fill the jar the rest of the way.

If they died now, they couldn't say he didn't try to keep them alive.

Rachel pressed her fist against her mouth to stop herself from giggling at Haddie's performance. Really, her best friend could put up such a good act. She lowered her fist. "It was an accident, Ilia,'' she said as innocently as she could. Luckily, Ilia didn't say much more and turned on the pair of Eagles. Rachel smiled. "I love you too, Haddie. Now let's go do some fishing.'' Yes, Rachel understood that Haddie showed her affections differently.

This time around, she made no attempt to hide her giggles and did so openly when water sprayed all over the other girl. Clutching Haddie's jar, she mulled over the situation of Flying Seahorse fishing. "I think we have to cast the charm into the Lake.'' Bending gracefully, she placed the jars on the ground next to their feet. Standing straight, once more, she concentrated on the charm she had practiced a few moments ago.

"Carpe Retractum.'' The whip like movement was done to no avail. Rachel looked over at Haddie, disappointment on her face. "I know it'll take some time. Let's try together.'' She looked back out at the Lake. ''Carpe Retractum.'' Not so much as a flash of wand light happened. ''Carpe Retractum.'' Hello, magic rope! She watched excitedly as it landed in the lake, still attached to her wand. She had done it!

Henric wasn't really paying attention and just continued doing the wand incantation quietly on his own , until something happened to llia's cute hairbun. "You alright?"he asked his girlfriend. He glanced back at Rachel's group. He frowned at them especially at the girl, Haddie. He cast a slightly disappointed look at Rachel too. He hadn't talk to her of late since the activity over in DADA class. He wrote something on his parchment and enchanted the note, before silently sending it and slipping it into Rachel's bag. There were things he wanted to say to her, regrettably. He stood up and followed llia, picking up one jar as he walked by the desk.

"Aguamenti.." he muttered softly, filling the jar up with water. Although, he had no mood whatsoever to catch flying seahorses, there was still a level of participation he needed to achieve for this class. He watched what llia did...and half-heartedly cast "Carpe retractum" as well.

Now that she’d gotten her not entirely necessary practice done, all that was left for Brooklyn to do was apply herself to the activity. Granted, if she could have gotten someone else to do the fishing for her, she would have welcomed that with open arms. Hypothetically, as she still didn’t particularly like hugs. Although she’d survived that one, so she imagined another wouldn’t kill her. As long as it wasn’t done without her express approval. Plus, preferably not by someone sweaty and smelling disgusting. She didn’t think it was too much to ask. Besides, even she knew there would have to be some form of repayment if someone volunteered to collect the seahorses for her. She wasn’t stupid, just very particular.

For now, though, she was resigned to having to perform the activity herself. Getting up from her bench, she went up to retrieve a jar, inwardly nodding as she heard the reprimand over the hair pulling. That had just been immature, but then what could anyone expect from a first year. She certainly didn’t expect much. Returning to her bench, she pulled her wand out again and aimed it inside. “Aguamenti,” she cast, quickly filling the jar. That was easier than filling a cauldron, after all. Less water. Now she just had to bother about casting the charm again.

Jar full of water in one hand and her wand in the other Hady stood near the lake just looking out into the water for several moments. Slowly her hazel eyes shifted from the water and it's creatures to those around her surveying their tactics with the tasks. Not all that many of them appeared to be doing that well.

Letting out a small breath and tightening her grip on her wand she was ready. "Carpe Retractum!," she cast confidently making perfectly sure it was in time with the whip-like motion. Instantly there was an orangish glow and a magical robe appeared attached to her wand. Shifting her weight just slightly onto her other foot Hady watched as the end of the rope sailed smoothly into the water.

Jace nodded in understanding, scribbled down some more notes, and went on to retrieve a jar from the table up front. Again, he didn't like the idea of fishing because of the cold weather, but then again, he didn't have any choice. Besides he doesn't have any intention of wasting his efforts in studying for the day just to get a zero in the activity portion. He ought to show his teacher that he's really serious with his studies.

Tucking the jar under his arm, Jace got himself a good spot, far away from the other kids. Since he was going to go "fishing", silence and concentration is a must. Besides, he does enjoy working alone.

First things first. Crouching near the lake's edge, Jace placed the jar in front of him, and carefully filled it with water. "Aguamenti." The Ravenclaw watched his jar be filled with liquid, and stopped when it was three-quarters full, "Finite."

Now that's done...it's time to fish.

Ok, this isn't that hard. She glanced around to her colleagues and could spot a few familiar faces nearby as she kept walking to an empty portion of the lake's shore. She set her jar in the ground, stretched her arms above her head and gave her limbs a good shake.

Let's do this! She tested the whip-like movement with her wand a few more times before adding the incantation words. Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum, Carpe Retractum...

"KAHR-pay ruh-TRACK-tum" she tried out loud a few more times, working her pronunciation. This wasn't that hard.

She took a deep breath, focused her gaze on the lake and combined with the whip-like movement she cast the spell "KAHR-paaay ruh-TRACK-tum". But nothing happened, no Golden/Orange Light, no nothing. Buggers.

She scratched her head and looked around to see if someone had managed it to work yet.

Letting his scarf hang loose around his neck, Jace cleared his throat, visualized what he wanted to happen and achieve, and practised the whipping movement of his wand.

"Carpe Retractum,"...Whip. "Carpe Retractum,"...Whip.

Moment of truth?

Breathing, and relaxing his tense arms, Jace concentrated on the water, raised his arm, and casted the spell, "Carpe Retractum!" Whip.

Aha. Haha.

"I had the idea that they may jump out like Flying fish but I've never seen any of them doing this at any time I came down to the Lake so I think we have to do this as though were are actually fishing.'' Rachel smiled at the encouragement. She giggled. "Professor Draper might had thrown me out of the lesson if he saw me do that.''

The dark haired Eagle stared out at the Lake, watching and waiting patiently for a seahorse to be attracted to her rope. She hoped to feel the pull on the other end soon as she dearly wanted to catch at least one of the creatures. "I wonder how long it usually takes to capture one. I've never been fishing before so I don't know much about it,'' she informed Haddie.

The seconds turned into minutes and still she felt no tug. Rachel was just starting to think that no seahorses were coming when she felt her magical rope a tad heavier on the other end as though it had wrapped itself around something. "Haddie, I think I've got something!'' She started to pull it in, filled with excitement. But as the rope came in closer, her excitement evaporated. "It's only a clump of seaweed.''
