As the students began practicing the movement and incantation, Sabel made his way around and through the rows of benches. He kept a weather eye on the bowl and water near the door, just in case someone thought it would be fun to try and pull a fast one on him. By luck of the draw it would be one of the curious firsties too.

Thankfully, everyone seemed preoccupied with the spell, especially the tongue tying incantation.

He'd rested his head on her lap, covered his face with his newly acquired black hat that he'd stolen from the snowman building competition (he knew it would come in handy) and had promptly fallen back asleep.

He awoke just now with a start! Opa!, had he missed the entire lesson? He took his hat off his face and sat up bleary eyed and looked around him. People were casting spells, but he had absolutely no idea what for. "Psst, Nells, Whats happening? Why didn't you wake me up?" He said, laughing "It's your fault I'm this sleepy anyway", he teased her giving her a little shove with his shoulder.

Except of course, those who had been sleeping during his lesson. Making his way over to the dozing student, Sabel gave the groggy kid's foot a nudge with the toe of his boot. "Gimenez, up to your feet and a lap around the room, full pace if you will." As in, it was not an option. "Perhaps it'll give you the jolt of energy needed to stay awake in my class."

His eyes scanned some of the other yawning students. "Anyone else ready for a snooze may join in." Seriously, beds were for sleeping, class wasn't.

SPOILER!!: Henric

Alright, done...

"PER-SE-KWA-RIS...nope...that doesn't sound right...Per-se-aquaris!"he cast confidently but nothing happened. Huh? Did he pronounce the spell incorrectly. He paused to listen once more to his classmates incantations.Oh...it sounded like that! Alright then, let's do the spell again...

"Persequoris! Persequoris!!" Henric cast.

And while class was for the practical, Sabel did recall having specifically asked the students not to cast. His wand was up in a jiffy, casting a quick finite in Nicolei's direction. "Mr. Nicolei, if you could refrain from casting until I ask you to, that would be appreciated. A homing spell without a target can be a nasty thing."

Just a bit of an fyi.

SPOILER!!: Benzi

Over the course of this year, mostly for Dueling Club but also for NEWT reasons, Benzi had gone back and retaught himself all the spells he'd ever learned, read about or briefly heard of. Long hours in the practice room and one particular incident where he'd blown something up (he'd fixed it straight after not to worry) had made him quite the expert on mastering spells.

Therefore, he wasn't worried about learning and executing this new homing spell but he did have more than a few questions about it. Muttering the incantation once and finding that the wand movement was simple, Benzi waited a few moments and then raised his arm. "Professor, how exactly does this spell work? Can a shield charm deflect it or only solid objects? Can you combine a verbal incantation with nonverbal Persequoris. or do they count as one single incantation when combined? Could one hypothetically outrun it or fly away quickly enough? What would happen if one disapparated or used a spell to disappear and reappear in the same vicinity, would that confuse it? And what would happen if the target multiplied itself after the spell had already been cast? Would the homing spell know instinctively which duplicate was the real deal?" and he'd probably have more questions if he actually took the time to think about the logistics of it.

His duel with Evie had taught the seventh year many things, and he'd been fervently reading up on the pros and cons of the Gemino charm ever since. He was particularly interested in the relationship between the copies and the original and what exactly were the differences. If he could pinpoint those then he'd hypothetically be able to spot a fake copy and the charm would be rendered useless against him.

But, regrettably, this wasn't the topic of today's lesson. The homing spell was. Right.

Speaking of fyi's, it seemed he had left a few out. Rider was kind enough to point out points that were rather important. Sabel paused at the front of the class again, clasping his hands behind his back. "The homing spell is itself, an offensive spell. It appears as a green or orange light that follows the target the caster intends. So, make sure your intention is clear or, if not, say it at the end of your spell."

Make sense? Clear as mud and all that jazz? "The Homing spell is therefore, it's own spell and should be spoken after the spell of your choice, such that it is say ... stupefy Persequoris Rider. You would do the wand movement of the spells in order, at your intended target. The spell will do the rest, cast properly. Any part of the combination can be done non-verbally."

In regards to how to stop the spell.... "The spell can be stopped by shield charms, finites and physical barriers. Hypothetically you could try to outrace it, as the spells can only travel at a constant speed, but they follow with a vengeance, so you might be running for a very, very long time. Disappearing would definitely confuse the spell, and it is likely that it would find a physical barrier to hit, providing you didn't return to the vicinity too quickly. As for multiplied targets, if the multiplication occurred after the spell was cast then the spell would go after the original target. If the multiplication happened before, you would have to choose which of the duplicates to cast at. The spell can distinguish no better than you can at that point."

Sabel nodded. "Good questions."

Ava just nodded at Professor's comment about her idea. Then she heard the man talked about homing spell. Ooooooh, could she use this at her upcoming duel? Hehehe. Maybe not.

And now, it's time to practice the spell. She took her wand from the holster and tried the wand movement. First, she needed to line to the side and flicked it forward. And it combined with the other spell too? Cool!! "Professor, could you demonstrate how to combine this spell with others?" PRETTY PLEASE?????? And of course she's gonna continue practice the wand movement. And the incantation too.

"Persequoris....... Persequoris........" To be honest that the incantation was NOT easy.

He practiced the wand movement for this spell first, drawing his wand to the side and then sharply flicking it forward. "Persequoris," the first year chanted to himself. "Per-seq-uor-is. PERSEQUORIS!" Yeah, it was a mouthful, but he thought he had it. "So you cast your offensive spell first, and then follow up with the homing spell right away, professor? Like Ava said, will you demonstrate that for us?" He wanted to make sure he'd have it right in his notes for later.

Ah, good kids looking for an example. Sabel nodded at them both. "Correct, Truebridge. Your offensive spell and then Persequories. Or, if you don't have time, Persequoris will do a bit of damage itself."

Looking up, Sabel considered all the snitches hovering above. There was one particularly fiesty one that was zipping about through the others. Letting out a breath, Sabel lifted his wand and cast, "Impedimenta Persequoris!" First the slash and circle of the impedimenta jinx and then the line and flick of the homing spell. Orange light zapped from his wand, darted about after the snitch as it bounded this way and that, and then connected.

The snitch froze in mid flight, turning slowly in the air for but a few seconds before the spell dissipated and it resumed it's buzzing about.

SPOILER!!: Dot

And they were going to learn a homing spell, which sounded dead useful, so not only was she right, but the spell wasn't a total bust. (Only... what was the blue stuff, okay? Could they talk about that soon?)

In the meantime, Dot was going to practice the spell and maybe creep a little closer to Mr. Professor Face so they could nod at each other some more. As one did. "Persequoris." What a mouthful. Per-seck-kwor-is. And the motion, too, was more involved then the standard spell. Luckily, it was a charm, and Dot had great confidence in her ability to learn charms. Warranted confidence or not.

"Persequoris." And again with the motion. "Psst. Professor. What's the blue stuff?" So much for patience."

And it was at about that time that Sabel noticed the sneaking Dot. His eyes trailed over to her, one eyebrow arching. The blue stuff, huh? Well, it was probably time.

His gaze went back to the class. "Remember that your best defenses are shield spells and using your environment. Pulling up stones, boards, trees and throwing them in the path of the spell. Darting behind, under or around. But remember to keep moving and on your toes, the homing spell will follow until it is snuffed out."

Now, onto the main rut. A breath left him. "The class will now be divided into two sections. First, second and third years, you will be going through the door to the other side of the classroom. The snitches will follow. Your task is to take out as many of them as you can, using a combination of the homing spells, your environment and other spells you have learned. Be forewarned, the snitches will be attacking you." Oppungo could be so useful sometimes.

"Fifth, sixth and seventh years, you are welcome to join the Snitch Hunt, or you may stay here. We will be discussing the Killing Curse, and doing a practical on that." His gaze tracked a few of the younger students. "By Hogwarts decree, I am only allowed to present this topic and the content involved, to the older students."

Which left the middle group. "Fourth years, you are on the brink. You may decide where you would like to spend the rest of your time. For all of you older students, if you are not comfortable with the topic of the killing curse, please do go to the next room."

His hand rested on the bowl by the door. "This is a pensive, and you will have the opportunity to witness first hand what the killing curse looks like." His expression was once again grim. "Please divide up now. Those who are remaining, please take a seat on the benches and give me ONE thing you know about the killing curse."

And with that, the door in the wall opened and the snitches all zoomed through to the next room.

OOC: Heya all, so pretty simple:

1, 2, 3 years please all go post HERE ; you may start on the activity. Use Persequoris, other spells and your environment to stop the attacking snitches. Minimum of three posts please. You MAY Rp for the snitches, but please no serious injury or damage - the snitches would only bruise, if even.

4 years, please choose between staying and going. If you are going, please post HERE and follow the instructions for the 1-3 years. IF you are staying, please follow the instructions for the 5-7 years.

5, 6, 7 years you can choose whether you stay or go. If you are staying, please post your student having a seat and answer the question (if they are inclined :) ). If you are going, please follow instructions for the 1 -3 years.

AWWWWwwwww what?! Why couldn't the firsties learn anything about the killing curse?! Davie was deeply, DEEPLY disappointed by this, and trudged up to the professor to tell him so, tugging on his sleeve to get his attention.

"If we get permission from our parents, professor, could we maybe watch your lecture in a pensieve later on? Please?"

FearlessLeader19 11-03-2015 05:25 PM

Gosh!

An activity AND a session about the Killing Curse! No fair, Professor! Adi was torn apart in joining the younger students because hello?! He wouldn't have to be sitting in a class but his fascination with death related things was stronger and the Hufflepuff eventually opted to stay behind.

He glanced at Benny, wondering which he would choose, before adjusting himself on a bench and raising his hand. "The incantation is Avada Kedavra.''

DuckyLinJi 11-03-2015 05:32 PM

Yoongi chuckled and shook his head when the Professor ordered one of the students to run a lap around the classroom. Didn’t they know that you just did not sleep in class? No matter how boring it is because you could be missing some important information. He watched the kid and wondered if he was going to run or refuse. Should be interesting to see which choice he made. Though if it had been him he would have run in a heartbeat. Call him a coward but he did NOT want to be on the Professor’s bad side. Nope.

Anyways, as class continued, Yoongi listened as the class was divided into two sections. And his group would be seeing and discussing the Killing Curse? A frown appeared on his face this time. He was curious though, the kid was always curious, probably would be his death one day but he was also reluctant. It could be handy learning about the Killing Curse WITHOUT actually getting killed you know?

As the door opened and the snitches zoomed out, Yoongi bit his lower lip, making a choice right then. Instead of following the snitches, he sat back down on the bench and , almost nervously, raised his hand. “The uh…killing curse …..you can't just shout the incantation..you have to really, really mean it for it to work" which made the curse even worse.

Kolyander 11-03-2015 05:33 PM

Hady shifted on her spot on the floor. Today's lesson was either cast spells at snitches that were going to attack her or sit and learn about the Killing Curse. This was somewhat new. Getting to decide what she was going to do. The choice wasn't to much of a hard one and she remained exactly where she was.

"If struck by the curse death is immediate," She replied raising her hand before giving the answer.

WhittyBitty 11-03-2015 06:11 PM

Given the choice between a snitch hunt and learning about the killing curse, Paulina chose the latter. It wasn't that she was morbid...she just felt that it was necessary to understand the evil out there. That, and she was feeling lazy this morning.

Sitting straight in her seat as an effort to wake up more, Paulina raised her hand. "Harry Potter is the only person to have survived the killing curse." The fact that everyone knew about it didn't change anything; it WAS something she knew about it.

Hey Ju 11-03-2015 06:44 PM

Jet's eyes suddenly looked more awake as she shifted on her seat to take a better look at the professor when he mentioned what the fifth to seventh yeras would be discussing.

Talking about the Killing Curse was almost a taboo and she was excited to learn about it, and even witness it happening through a pensieve memory. She raised her hand. "It is one of the Unforgivable Curses." And Jet was looking forward to listening to what professor Dakest had to teach them about it.

feeheeheeny 11-03-2015 09:42 PM

...Oh. Well. That explained everything.

No doubt the pensieve beside him held his memory, then. A memory of what a killing curse looked like. Right? Or it would, once he put the memory in there. That HAD to be why he was so serious today. Not a fun topic, not at all. Though... Sophie did notice how many of the younger students seemed disappointed that they had to leave, and how many of the upperclassmen looked excited by the day's topic.

And Soph just gave Dakest a Merlin, are these people nuts? look. Because... Merlin, were these people nuts? Getting excited over learning about the killing curse? Soph was judging them hardcore. All the judgmental looks. Didn't they REALIZE what all this really entailed? Someone died. No, someone was KILLED, and they were going to watch a memory of it happening. Someone going from full of life to lifeless. All the light in their eyes, gone. Into nothingness.

Lowering herself down onto one of the benches, Soph clutched her vine wand in her lap tightly. The fun Persequoris stuff was no longer at all on her mind - just the grim topic and task ahead of them. Hesitant at Sabel's question, her hand slowly rose into the air and she responded somberly, "There's a... a flash. Of emerald light, when it's casted. They say it's really bright, almost blinding, and there's supposed to be like... a huge rushing gust of wind with it, too. Like, 'cause it's such a powerful spell. Makes sense that the energies given off'd be so immense since it's... so strong of a spell."

Aaand back to fidgeting with her wand.

Holmesian Feline 11-03-2015 09:43 PM

The class was to be divided in two. Well that made the presence of the wall in the middle of the classroom a bit more sensible. As usual, the division was between the upper and lower years though as a 7th year it appeared he had a choice. The way to that fact brought him up short however.

Say what?

The Killing Curse?!

Darkest was actually going to teach them about the darkest most unforgivable of the the unforgivable curses? Cue the reason for the professor's serious expression during the course of the class so far. Benny unconsciously swallowed as he thought on the matter, debating staying or going. It wasn't like he really had any strong personal interest in the spell.

Catching the look from his boyfriend, he knew Adi was thinking the same thing. Should he stay. Benny personally that is since Adi was far more inquisitive at times. However curiousity got the better of him and he took a seat besides the badger.

It couldn't be that horrible...right?

SilverTiger 11-04-2015 01:52 AM

They were being given a choice as to what they wanted for the rest of the lesson. That was new, but then, as far as Brooklyn was concerned there wasn’t any choice to make at all. She didn’t care about the snitches, and she hardly wanted to be attacked by them. Plus, she’d identified the pensieve in the first place. That explanation shouldn’t have even been needed, but it just went to show that people weren’t bothering to listen to everything Professor Dakest had said. At least, they hadn’t listened when he’d answered her question way back at the beginning of the lesson, verifying that her guess that the bowl was a pensieve was right. It annoyed her, but in any case, she didn’t move an inch. No, she was staying to see what the spell looked like. To actually get to use the pensieve.

She’d stayed quiet regarding the question, too. She knew that the incantation was Avada Kedavra, after all. She didn’t know why anyone wouldn’t know that, or the basics regarding the spell. She was way more focused on the pensieve and the light emitting from it. That was the interesting part.

oh its Erik ok 11-04-2015 01:56 AM

Well look at this Dakest was giving him a choice between staying and hearing about unforgivable curse, plus seeing one. Or going and practicing homing spells on snitches. Well the choice was obvious for Dante besides the whole not wanting to get up thing. He was staying up. This was turning out to be an awesome lesson.

Oh right question

"You need really strong intent and skill to perform it."

Dante doubted he could even make someone nose bleed if he tried it.

Which he would never since it was against the law.

Yeah, against the law

Symphora 11-04-2015 02:16 AM

When his wand was was taken out of his hand, he blinked and turned his head towards the professor. Oops..."Sorry about that Professor...I was in the zone...didn't realise I was casting it with my wand..."Henric replied rather sheepishly.

Wait...what? They were going to do a practical on the killing curse?! B-but? Why? The unforgivable spell!*Gulps* Oh dear...this didn't suit well with the fifth year Hufflepuff. Henric didn't like killing things. It made him uncomfortable and truly remorseful the next. They were also told that they were going to watch a memory of someone witnessing the killing curse too in the pensive!? Did he want to see it? Should he stay back...or... go to the other room? He was contemplating his options in his head...but his curiosity won him over. He needed to know what the curse looked like atleast. Henric went to sit on the benches and decided to remain quiet. He only knew a few things about the killing curse and most of his classmates had answered to the best of their knowledge so there was no need to repeat that were already mentioned.

ArianaBlack 11-04-2015 02:38 AM

As if the pensive wasn't enough to bring WAR FLASHBACKS from the time in the forbidden forrest and that horrible detention where he had to relive the moment only days after it had happened, they were actually going to have an entire lesson centered around death too.

GREAT.

This is EXACTLY what Zander wanted to learn about the moment he rolled out of bed this morning. Man, Dakest couldn't have done a better job choosing their class's subject material. It was PERFECT. Zander was absolutely elated to learn about all things death. Sounded like TONS OF FUN. He was SUPER jazzed.

.... And he felt like he was going to throw up too. Just brilliant.

He considered leaving to do the snitch activity. And I mean, REALLY REALLY considered it. But... That'd mean staying with all the first through third years. He'd be the oldest one in there. He was the Head Boy. He'd be a complete joke if he left this room, not that he wasn't already but even MORE of one. He couldn't just get up and leave. Everyone would see him. That and his feet felt like they were superglued to the ground.

So despite wanting to learn about anything but the killing curse, he remained seated. Face as pale as a blank sheet of parchment. Stomach churning. Head uneasy.

Perfect.

So he'd sit here. He'd learn. He'd listen. But he wasn't under any circumstances going to look into that pensive. Watching one person die in real life was enough. He didn't need to see it again. He knew what death looked like. He could imagine what the killing curse did. Especially with all the visuals Sophie gave in response to the questions, Zander felt like he could practically imagine the whole thing spot on.

"It shouldn't be used." That's what he knew about it. Nobody should be allowed to use it. Voldemort was a different case, sure, but they had no reason to use it now. It was unforgivable for a reason. Zander was more sure of this than he was sure of anything else. The killing curse shouldn't even be an option. Death could be prevented. Even if death by Avada Kedavra was quick and painless. It shouldn't be used. And that was that.

ChanceCoeur 11-04-2015 02:43 AM

Head snap.

Noelles head was off of Phillips shoulder. Off. Okay Professor? She blushed because she wasn't used to be given the look by a professor. She pulled herself up, sitting a little straighter as the professor demonstrates the homing spell. Okay. Homing spell. She or acted the word that was being murmured around the classroom. She did the swift movement that was taught to her until...

Oi. Oh hello Sabbies head.
Noelle blushed as Dakest told him to take a lap. Yeah sleepy head, get to running. She needed good marks!

Oh boy, now the class was being split up.

Noelle pulled herself off the floor and dusted her skirt off before heading to the other side of the classroom. She was much more awake now S she FINALLY noticed the snitches. She looked up in awe as they came with her to the other side of the room. Her mouth twitched though, when she was told that they would be attacking.

Touché snitches... Touché.

pundantic 11-04-2015 04:03 AM

Chloe was on board with everything the professor was saying until he mentioned that they would be attacked.

That she was not alright with for a litany of reasons, most of them circling around anxiety. Not that she was going to own up to that because she could do anything anyone else could do. She would just do it teetering on the edge of having a breakdown from being attacked the whole time.

Attacking eleven year olds just sounded malicious in her opinion.

The blonde followed her classmates into the next room.

Cassirin 11-04-2015 04:19 AM

Oh, pensieve. That explained the blue stuff, and it also made Dot sort of regret asking. If there was a happy memory, or a potion to make you tap dance until midnight, or something lovely in there, then she was all for it. But a memory in which someone probably... well... died?

No, thank you.

But the other older students were staying, and even though Dot really wanted to go practice her new charm, she also didn't want to be the lame fifth year who couldn't stomach the truths about life. She folded her hands against her stomach and took a seat.

"It's evil. There's nothing fair or sporting in killing someone straight out, and using it will crack your soul irredeemably." Soul cracks. Those were how horcruxes got made.

sarahlooo 11-04-2015 04:48 AM

Evie's mind was lingering on the homing spell so much that she nearly missed Dakest moving onto the next part of the lesson. The killing curse? Really? Her eyes stayed on the professor, wondering how hard it was for him to go ahead and teach this part. She wondered if he had used it before, being an auror. Evie knew that he didn't even like recommending students to the MLE, particularly the auror program, so... this was probably hard curriculum for him to teach.

Her eyes flickered to the pensieve. She hadn't used one in a while. And the last time she had used one was for something very much less... grim. Dakest wanted to know something about the Killing Curse to see what they knew, but Evie had her own question, so she raised her hand.

"Does the homing spell work with the killing curse?" She didn't see why it wouldn't... Killing made easier. Lovely.

Sabel's eyebrows went up at Truebridge's request. He almost laughed. Leaning down, he let his voice drop to a confidential whisper. "You mean if you get permission from the former Headmistress of Hogwarts, who was my boss last year? And if she gives permission to the current Headmaster? That would be a war of wands to see."

So the answer was, likely not, but at the same time he was so curious as to the results that he didn't feel like being a discouragement.

And why did Newman look like she might start screaming for her life? They were just snitches. Nothing truly terrifying about them. In fact, they were kind of cute in their own, metallic ways.

Once all the first, second and third years were gone through the door, as well as any of the older students that wanted to follow, Sabel closed it behind them. The buzzing of the snitches faded to silence. He turned to the remaining students.

His attention went to Hyland. Curious, it was the first time he'd heard the boy speak with any sort of trepidation in his voice. It was well warranted. A slow nod. "You do. It can't be half hearted. Suffice to say, it would have to be the most important thing on your mind in that moment."

"If struck by the curse death is immediate," She replied raising her hand before giving the answer.

Then there was Lynch. Sabel gave the young girl the smallest of smiles. "Probably one of the better qualities of the spell. While it is an unforgivable, the death it induces is quick and without pain." He wouldn't say it was a blessing. Death wasn't.

Sitting straight in her seat as an effort to wake up more, Paulina raised her hand. "Harry Potter is the only person to have survived the killing curse." The fact that everyone knew about it didn't change anything; it WAS something she knew about it.

"Except, in the case of Harry Potter. Correct." Sabel let out a breath. "At least, the only one hit by the curse to survive. There are other ways to survive it's casting." An important difference.

Talking about the Killing Curse was almost a taboo and she was excited to learn about it, and even witness it happening through a pensieve memory. She raised her hand. "It is one of the Unforgivable Curses." And Jet was looking forward to listening to what professor Dakest had to teach them about it.

A simple but honest answer. Sabel nodded. "Unforgivable, for it's ease and use of taking life. It's important for each of us to remember that while we have a great deal of power in our hands, in our heads, in our blood, we should never think or believe or decide that we have the power to decide life and justice."

...Oh.

As for Brown, he was trying not to look at her. Why? Because she had that knowing, 'I'll read your thoughts and empathize with you' look that he did not need. Not right now.

Except, it was hard to not look at a student when they were talking. So, he let his mood darken even a bit more, and her description of the curse helped in that regard. Also made him wonder if she'd ever seen one before. "Quite so. The appearance of the spell is very distinctive. Suffice to say that if you see a green light coming towards you, you'd best be on your toes quick."

Take no chances.

His gaze passed along Atreyu, noting the look on the kid's face. Merlin, no one was going to pass out on him, right?

At least he didn't have to worry about that with Andrews. The girl looked downright determined, almost so much so that it bordered on concerning. She got a momentary eye, before he moved on. No suggestions or offerings were fine, they had nearly covered everything anyways.

Nearly didn't mean quite. Not just yet. Sabel nodded at Barrington. "Skill is important too. You do have to be a good and strong practitioner at magic." Or so the records said, though whether that was to discourage certain people from trying and succeeding, he wasn't sure.

In the zone. That almost got a smirk from him. "No harm done. Just, pay a bit more heed when you are practicing, for the safety of yourself and others." In the classroom and outside of it.

And then the kid looked like he was going to be sick. Sabel almost made mention that any and all projectile vomits were to be done out the windows or in the bathrooms. Merlin, and they hadn't yet seen anything yet.

SPOILER!!: Zander

The potential for gross smelling bile on his floor was rising by the minute. Sabel let out a noisy breath, his gaze catching on Zander's ghostly face. "Mr. Adair, do remember to breathe. I don't believe you would want me resuscitating you."

Because what could be more terrifying than the killing curse? A professor bringing a student back from passing out.

At least the kid managed to get a few words out. Sabel nodded slightly. "Shouldn't be, as it's against the law. You'll end up in Azkaban quicker than cheese on a cracker if you do, or even attempt it." Not entirely true, as it was often difficult to catch those who did cast the spell, but there was always the benefit of instilling the fear of don't do it into minds at a young age.

Now that she knew what was in the pensive, Wojack-Gusey hardly looked keen on it's contents anymore. Good. Meant she had some brains between her ears.

"Evil is the best descriptor for it." Good moral compass too. Raised right, this one. She got another head nod.

SPOILER!!: Evie
Quote:

Originally Posted by sarahBOO (Post 11815683)

Lovely.

And here was another one, thinking that they could read his mind through calculating, empathetic eyes. Sabel leveled a straight gaze at the young girl. It had to soften a little bit though, at her question. He shrugged his shoulders. "In theory, perhaps. Hard to say if it's been tested or not. Records do state the curse must be aimed at a target, and the aim must be good if it's going to hit. So, it's not out of the realm of possibility."

And wasn't that just a peachy thought?

With that lovely idea of a homing Killing Curse chasing on their tails, it was time to move on. Sabel let out another breath and leveled his tone and his gaze to one of complete neutrality. "Due to the nature of the killing curse, it cannot be blocked. Not by any shield spell at least. As it's effects are....permanent, it's important to know what to do if, and when, this spell is cast."

Heaven forbid it ever happened to any one of them. The thought of that was enough to make him feel queasy. Another breath and he moved on.

"There are really only three ways this spell can be defended." A fourth, but he wasn't about to put the idea of self-sacrifice into student's heads. The idea of the lesson was for each of them to learn how to keep themselves AND others alive.

"First, shared wand cores of the casting and defending wands, can result in a Priori Incantatem, where the spells will essentially cancel out. Secondly, spells can intercept and hit the killing curse, specifically the stunning charm, but to succeed in this you have to be spot on with your aim. If you miss........."

No more needed t be said.

"The third option, is therefore your BEST and most likely to succeed option. Dodging, or blocking the curse with a physical barrier." Should make each of them feel rather uncomfortable.

"These are the ONLY effective ways of ensuring that you stay alive. Be careful if dodging, you never know if you are moving right into the path of something else. Which leaves blocking with physical barriers. This is where the manipulation of your environment becomes so vital. If you have to rip a wall down to stay alive, do it. Damages can be repaired. Lives cannot."

He let that linger in the air for a moment as he moved to the pensive. "Keep in mind though, that whatever inanimate object the curse connects with, it is likely that the curse will cause an explosion or burst of green fire. The more intent the spell, the more damaging this is. You will still be in a very lethal position even when you are defending yourself. So your best option. Get out of dodge. Don't stick around. Don't try to be the winner. Sometimes, there is a time and a place to turn tail and run."

Yup. The greatest defense? Booking it. "Live to fight another day."

Now behind the pensive, Sabel fixed those in the class with an unreadable expression. "Before we move on, for those of you who want to see first hand what a killing curse looks like, you may come up one at a time to the pensive. You won't be able to see details of where the memory occurred, or who was involved; those recollections have been tampered with for your own safety. And don't ask."

A slow breath left him. "For those of you who don't want to see, don't come up. This isn't for everyone, though I would encourage it. Here, you can see first hand something which you would only see at your most dire moment. Here, in a safe and controlled environment. Just...consider that."

That and don't faint on his floor, please.

Text Cut: Pensive Memory

When you sink your head into the pensive, the world swirls about you, drags you down and deposits you in the middle of an asile. An asile already slightly disturbed with broken bits of pottery and plants. It's hard to tell though, the edges of everything are blurred, as if looking through a foggy window, and everything has a dull, grey tinge. The only things in somewhat sharper focus are those things closest to you: your hands, your wand, the floor beneath your feet and some of the closer plant leaves.

You may notice that you stand at the crossroads of asiles and before you stands a shadow of a figure. All identifying features have been clouded out, as if they don't exist. You can tell that the person is talking to you, and that there is someone behind - someone you think perhaps you are protecting. The voice is sickly, turns your blood cold and your hair to stand on end but the words, like the face, have been jumbled as if your head has been stuck under water.

Then, all of a sudden the figure before you is casting silent spells. The first a zap of light, the second the sickly, eerie emerald green burst of the killing curse. The moment seems to hold, your heart stops and adrenaline pumps through you like never before. Then, you are moving and time is speeding forward at an alarming rate. You have but a heartbeat of a second. A shift forward and a flick of your wand and you've upturned a table full of pots and plants to send it into the path of the killing curse. You shove forward, sending a blast of air at the table, trying to push it forward into the path of the spell and away from you as far as possible, as close to the shadowed man as possible. It doesn't get far. It is a second, a fraction of time and a desperate action between you and the killing curse.

The table just barely makes it into the path, and the curse impacts against it. It is explosive and jarring, shaking the ground as whole plants and planks and pots split apart in clumps of eerie, green fire that jets this way and that. You're thrown back by the concussion of it, your lower back impacting against the shelf behind you with such a burst of pain its a wonder if you'll ever walk again.

Then, the vision swims to grays and mixed colors and abruptly you are pushed out of the pensive and returned to your own body, safe in the DADA classroom, with no injury or pain to speak of. Only a memory.

"Once you are done and ready, I'd like you to form up into pairs. One student will use the Homing spell, with a green light cast, to imitate the killing curse. The your partner will defend themselves as if they were defending against that curse. Once you've had a turn, switch. And then switch around. Keep at this until the end of class. And take this seriously. This practice may one day save your life."

And, that was it. This was it. "You can come up, or pair up now."

--------------------
OOC: Sorry for the long post, trying to move us along swiftly.

So, you can look into the pensive - please have your students react ONLY to what the pensive memory says - do not make any additional assumptions; this is all that can be seen and all that is allowed to be seen in the memory. Sabel has been very careful to make sure this is so :)

For the activity, find a partner, or pairs of three or four (whatever works out best) and have one student start with casting the homing spell and the other student defending - idea is to practice as if defending against the killing curse, so keep in mind the only methods of defense against that (of course, not everyone has to be successful - have fun (?) with this XD)).

Please do at LEAST one post PER pairing. i.e. one post casting the spell at your partner, one post defending against your partner. Of course, feel free to do more :)

If you have any questions, please ask. Sabel/I will pop in. Class ends Nov 5, and I'll start wrapping us up the morning of, and it will close closer to midnight :).

*late* pensieve peeps!

Zeke had opted to stay with the group to view the Killing Curse memory. He knew enough about it, but he had never been allowed to witness it until now, not even in memory form. A part of him wonder what his mum might think of this… she wouldn’t be pleased. Knowing that she wouldn’t approve hadn’t led him to change his mind, instead it had cemented his resolve to stay. He knew there were nasty things in the world, and he knew he could have met that fate on more than one occasion. He couldn’t be shielded forever, he had to see it for himself.

He hadn’t offered any insights into his knowledge of the curse, everyone had beaten him to the more obvious statements and he didn’t feel as if elaborating or providing his own perspective would be appropriate.

Mentally he took notes as Sabel spoke. Wand cores could not be predicted so unless one had prior knowledge that was known to be accurate… they oughtn’t depend on that. Intercepting the curse with a spell of your own, possible, but risky yes… and lastly, physical barriers. He would forever remember that.

For a long time, he had thought that dodging was a good strong strategy, but after what had happened in his first duel, he realised that he was lucky. Lucky to have dodged into the path of a spell himself. The vision of Kyroh in the flames still hadn’t left his mind. Only Sabel’s words of running pulled him from his thoughts. Turn tail and run? Would he be able to do that, if it came to it?

…

When they were instructed to move up, Zeke was among the first on his feet, but they slowed as he made his way forward. He’d had plenty of experience with pensieves, so he knew what to expect as far as viewing memories was concerned, but as for the Killing Curse, he hadn’t a clue.

When it was his turn, he leaned forward and let the memory absorb him into the world.

….

Very quickly he realised he wasn’t in the classroom, and though he didn’t know WHERE he was, he knew he wasn’t in a good position. Everything was telling him to fight, or to run, but his feet didn’t move. The floor was littered with bits of debris, plants and pots from what he could tell, but he didn’t want to look down, he needed to look ahead. There a figure had his attention, his undivided attention. This was it? This was where and how it was going to happen? He didn’t know WHY it was happening, but that was irrelevant, he didn’t know much of anything that was being said, but before he knew it, the figure sent a zap of light, closely followed by the green.

…

He’d stopped breathing, and everything in him was telling him to react, only… the memory played that out for him. It wasn’t really him after all, but it felt as if it was. Upturning the table, Zeke braced himself in the hopes that the curse wouldn’t hit, that it would be blocked by the object. The environment, use the environment. All too quickly, he was being sent back, and it was frightening. A part of him knew he hadn’t been hit by the curse, but it was all so startling and all so real, that the impact could not be ignored. And then…… it was over.

Zeke inhaled a deep breath before expelling it slowly, his eyes were wider than usual as he worked to process what he had just seen. Swallowing, he stepped out of the way so that the next could have a turn.

And now they were supposed to practice defending against something like that? …

Did anyone want to partner with him? Because right now he was lost for words.

DuckyLinJi 11-04-2015 01:07 PM

Looking to his side, he was surprised that Zander had decided to stay. And the Head Boy didn’t look so good. He knew bits of what had happened to him some time ago as he hadn’t been at this school yet but the ghostly face the guy made , made him feel uneasy. Like he knew something that they all didn’t….and he probably did. “Dude, are you okay?” he whispered as to not disturb the class and the others giving and receiving answers. He casted a final concerned look at him before turning his attention to the pensieve.

Should he go and see? It would be a curious thing to witness. Yoongi frowned at himself. Did he just think that? That someone dying could be a curious thing to see? Merlin’s Beard he needed help. But yes, he wanted to see the memory. He was about to open his mouth and ask the Professor who’s memory it was when the man said that it they didn’t need to bother asking. Hmpf, killjoy.

SPOILER!!: memory
Standing up from the bench, Yoongi walked over to the pensieve and when it was his turn he took a deep, calming breath before placing his hands on the bowl and stuck his head under water. He had never ever been in a pensieve memory before and he had expected to fall in the memory dripping wet from the water but he wasn’t. The world began to swirl around him and he knew that there was no going back now. He had to life the memory till the end.

He felt himself getting dragged down until he stood in the middle of an asile. The first thing he noticed were the broken pottery and plants around him. Then he looked around him at the blurred edges of the room. Where was this place even? Almost automatically he checked his hands and saw that he was holding his wand.

Realising he was standing in the middle of a crossroads of asiles, he suddenly noticed the shadow of a figure before him. He wanted to narrow his eyes to try and see the shadow better but everything about him or her were completely clouded like the rest of the room. Then he heard the words. Though jumbled like he was listening under water it still made him fearful .

Suddenly, he saw the figure before him move and casting silent spells. The first a zap of light and the second was an eerie emerald green spell. He instinctively knew what spell that was and his heart seemed to stop for a split second before adrenaline pumped through him like he had never felt before. He wasn’t going to die here, he wanted to life.

He moved, trying his best that this was a memory and that nothing could actually harm him but it was still frightening. He had but a heartbeat to make a decision and he flicked his wand to upturn a table full of pots and plants to send it into the path of the killing curse. He shoved it forward, using his wand to blast air at the table, trying to push it into the path of the spell and away from him as far as possible but it doesn’t go far.

The table does make it into the line of the curse and it impacts against it. There was a loud explosion. Though, he thought it would have been a loud explosion because the sound was muffled. The ground shook and whole plants and planks and pots split apart as the curse jets in every direction. He didn’t know it he was hit by an object, or hit by the impact of the explosion but he was being thrown back and his lower back impacted against a shelf behind him. A feeling of intense pain burst through him and he vaguely wondered if he was going to be crippled when the vision in front of him changed and a moment later he was back in his own, safe body in the safe DADA classroom.

The pain was gone but the memory wasn’t. He stepped away from the pensieve, looking positively disturbed. Though his eyes were watery, he wasn’t crying. Actually, his mind was still processing everything that had happened and the more he thought the paler he got. He had to sit down on the ground for a moment because his hands began to shake and he tried to act normal, though that failed so he sat down. Who’s memory had this been? Had this been the Professor’s memory? Was that why it was altered? And had he just lived the Professor’s moments…..or had he been the shadow figure? Maybe none of them and he had gotten the memory from someone else. An Auror or a criminal perhaps? “Prof…” his voice was timid, nothing like him but he just couldn’t bring up to be cheery right now. This was serious. “Professor? Did…did I ..i mean that person , survive or?” He ran a hand through his bright red hair as he obviously still didn’t get what had happened. It had happened too fast. "No wait, you wouldn't have gotten the memory if i had died" he laughed, a thing he did when he got nervous. Curse him for pointing that out in the first meeting. "I mean, that other person..not me" Merlin's Beard he was still shaken up.

Anyways, knowing that Zeke had also been in the pensieve, Yoongi took another few calming breaths before he stood up and walked to his fellow Gryffindor. “Partners?” was the only thing he asked. Maybe someone else wanted to join them, or him if Zeke refused.

Hera 11-04-2015 02:08 PM

Zeke was just standing, watching the others when he overheard Yoongi's questions for Sabel. He cringed. There was something inherently personal about watching memories, and he couldn't help but see Sabel filling the shoes he had just walked in. It was the kind of thing that Auror's faced, right? It was... normal by their standards? Or at least, more so than other professions. Zeke swallowed, feeling a lump in his throat.

He had his wand his hand already, somehow the larch made him feel less vulnerable than he'd felt in that memory. However, he couldn't help but wonder what the outcome would be for him, if he was faced with a Killing Curse. To an extent, the person casting it would be a factor in determining his own success... or not.

"Yeah man," he replied, suddenly realising that Yoongi was in front of him. "You wanna cast first or second?" It didn't matter to him, not now, not after that.

Kolyander 11-04-2015 03:22 PM

Not a sound did she make after giving her answer. There was a lot being said now and each and every thing was being remembered. There wasn't a word that she didn't take to heart knowing that this all was incredibly important. Someday her life or the life of someone else could depend on this. Depend on her and what she had been taught here today. That on it's own was a hard thing to let sink in.

Even though she had chosen to remain and learn about the unforgivable curse Hady didn't expect to be given the choice to go and see the memory. She didn't expect to actually rise up from her spot on the floor and make her way over to the pensieve waiting her turn. Hazel eyes carefully watched each person before her and the looks on their faces as they returned from the memory. Was she sure she wanted to do this?

It might be strange but she felt she HAD to. This was an experience she would never get again and as tragic as this was the clarity of the situation would always be there. When her turn came she tucked her hair behind her ears and took a breath lowering her face down into the clear cool water of the pensieve...

Colors blended together and the room changed as her feet connected with the floor. This was her first true experience with something like this but she knew she was no long in the classroom. She knew that even though this felt completely real like it was all happening to her...it wasn't. No matter how hard she tried to figure out where she was she couldn't, her eyes and mind were quickly pulled onto the figure speaking to her. Nothing that was said to her made sense but she felt that none of it was good.

Time seemed to stand still for her yet at the same time it appeared to speed up. Her heartbeat became quickened as spells were cast her way making her flip a table over to attempt to protect herself. The green flash of light was so bright as it smashed into the table with such force she could feel herself throw backwards into a shelf. Hady saw and heard the explosion of the spell and pots and plants smash around her. She knew it wasn't really happening to her but in that moment, that brief moment the pain was real. The FEAR was real. There was nothing she could do.

And then everything blurred once more and she was back in the classroom. Letting out a slow breath she pushed a strand of hair off her face with a shaky hand and stepped to the side slowly. She wasn't hurt physically but mentally that was the worst feeling she had ever experienced. Other then her parents death more then a decade earlier. Hady blinked once, twice her face blank of whatever she might be feeling as she lifted her hazel eyes to scan the room around her.

A partner. She still had to complete the days task. If someone wanted to work with her that was fine...sorry but she wouldn't be asking anyone just yet.

Woah! Seemed like a lot of persons opted to stay for the session on the Killing Curse. Benny was included in this. Adi shot him a reassuring look, knowing very well that this would be an uncomfortable topic for him. He was able to see thestrals, after all.

With Dakest answering to all their responses now, the Hufflepuff gave his undivided attention to it all. And then the ways to defending oneself from the dreaded Curse. Did he wanted to see what said Curse looked like? Uh... yeah. He stood up to head over to the pensieve.

Here goes nothing.

Adi ducked his head into the substance that was neither mist nor liquid and soon he found himself surrounded with some chaos though he couldn't see that well because the images were kind of blurry. Suddenly, he became aware there was someone standing in front of him. The Puff squinted as he tried to get a picture of the face but of course that was of no use.

Wait... was Mr Blurry talking to him? Cue the frown! Oh no... it was someone BEHIND him. Adi turned but like the first blur, he could see no recognisable features. And that voice O__O It was so cold. He was half glad he couldn't understand the words. And then things were happening so fast... the green light and more chaos. It seemed like a few a loooong time but then Adi found himself back in the classroom, his eyes immediately searching for Benny. He needed some of his positivity and bounciness back here and his boyfriend could help. Sure, he did have a fascination with death but that didn't mean had to like watching that dratted Curse being shot at someone.

"I don't think you would want to see that,''
he told Benny as he went over to him. That was just his opinion because the decision was not up to him. Oh yeah... "Partners.'' He was referring to the activity- one he wasn't really looking forward to because of what he had just seen. Maybe he should have just gone with the younger students... but then again, he would have missed out on this, the answers to his curiosity about the Curse.

With the younger students and others that chose to deal with the attacking snitches over the killing curse, Professor Dakest began speaking in earnest about the curse in question. One had to wonder what had brought someone to create a spell that was nearly undefensible and killed others. Certainly a dark wizard for sure. Benny listened intently to what was being said by the professor regardless, taking the information in at simple face valuable that hopefully would never really be needed by him in real life.

As for the penseive memory, Benny was even less sure if he wanted to go and view it and remained seated at first. He watched his boyfriend go up when it was his turn only to come out of the memory looking shaken. "Then I wont," he mused before nodding at the idea of being partners for the rest of the activity. "Sure..."Even though he knew it wasn't a question. The Gryffindor got up to his feet so they could get to it once Adi was ready, the seventh year reaching discretely to take the other boy's hand and give it a squeeze of support.

It was... normal by their standards? Or at least, more so than other professions. Zeke swallowed, feeling a lump in his throat.

He had his wand his hand already, somehow the larch made him feel less vulnerable than he'd felt in that memory. However, he couldn't help but wonder what the outcome would be for him, if he was faced with a Killing Curse. To an extent, the person casting it would be a factor in determining his own success... or not.

"Yeah man," he replied, suddenly realising that Yoongi was in front of him. "You wanna cast first or second?" It didn't matter to him, not now, not after that.

Yoongi did managed a small smile as he looked at Zeke before moving his gaze to the pensieve. "Some memory huh?" he said vaguely, scratching the back of his neck. He looked around when the younger Gryffindor agreed to be his partner and shrugged his shoulders. "I'll cast first" he said. "I think we first need to move out of the way though..." didn't want the spell to hit any of the other students by accident.

He walked away, figured Zeke would follow him while taking his wand out of his wrist holster as he did so and when he found a good spot he swiftly and abruptly turned around, made a line to the side and a flick at the Gryffindor "Persequoris!" green light flashed out of his phoenix feathered wand and in his direction.
