Bree was out here slushing through the snow with a torch lit by chanting a runes. It all seemed very surreal. But so was magic in general but she knew it worked. She suddenly felt a a chilling wind andher fire waned and as much as she felt weird about runes she knew she had to try something and started chanting, "Kenaz, Kenaz, Ka, Ke, ki, ko, ku, ken, kenaz", slowly the fire started to reform. She then heard the professor ask what rune could be combined with kenaz well. She only knew a few runes but still knew one she throught would fit and raised her hand said, "How about fehu, the first word in its definition is fire and having a fire for wisdom and creativity can only be a good helpful thing out here.".

Time for the long cold march to the lake. At least the torch in his hand was now generating heat as well as light. Benny prepared himself as the doors were finally opened, a cold blast of air sending him momentarily shivering in response. It also alerted them to the truth of the weather conditions outside...it was not only cold but snowing. Just another thing to make the planned excursion interesting.

Very interesting.

As for the question posed to them...the Gryffindor had no clue. He was concentrating on his movements through the snowy wonderland, vaguely following close to his friend Adi. And making sure his torch didn't blow out.

Lux's torch was clearly defective because the flame was starting to flicker and get weak. Seemed as of her chanting wasn't enough and more might be needed. "Kenaz kenaz kenaz... ku ka ki ke ko… kun kan kin ken kon… ok ek ik ak uk… kaunnnnnnnnn..." Watching, she saw the flames grow stronger which would help her to feel even warmer.

Question time, and honestly it wasn't the best time for her since the cold made her feel stupider. "I agree with everyone that said Dagaz." Because why not.

okay following the class he kept his torch up high. His arm started to hurt but oh well thats what you get right.. and MERLIN!!! it was cold outside.. he could pet a million galleons that he would get sick after this class… yup.. totally going to have the flu.

Then a big gust of wind went by and a lot of snow… he could barely see the student in front of him. Hoping that he was on the path everyone else is following he managed to slip on some ice landing right on his bottom.. he sat there feeling the shooting pain on his backside.. "owwwwwwww" he said as he didn't want to risk getting up.. he hoped the student behind him didn't run him over.

After a few minutes of sitting there he crawled on to his hands like a turtle and he got up. dusting himself off he still had pain but he could manage… and thankfully his torch was still blazing away. Time to continue to follow everyone else.

Post 3 - Checking on flame

With the cold, brisk, icy, bone chilling, teeth chattering wind blowing as it was, Cris had to closely monitor his torch's flame. Yes it was still burning brightly, but was it a tad less bright and smaller? Cris couldn't tell. Either way he decided to chant the Galdr again. I mean what harm could it cause right?

So holding the runestone and his wand, closely together in one hand and his torch in the other, Cris began to chant the gladr to Kenaz again.

"Kenaz kenaz kenaz... ku ka ki ke ko… kun kan kin ken kon… ok ek ik ak uk… kaunnnnnnnnn..."....there all done. The flame would now most definitely withstand even the sub-zero temperatures of the South Pole.

Holding up his torch like an Olympian torch bearer and, like other Olympian torch bearers had done before him, Cris made sure he didn't trip over something and fall to the ground. So keeping one eye peeled in front of him...yes he could still see Professor Botros....and one eye in front of him, Cris continued to walk down the path to the lake.

Making her farther away from the castle and after Professor Botros, Beverly cursed in her head at how much she disliked the cold. If cold had a face it'd be sporting a Beverly Wayne bruise. It WAS a thing. On the outside though, only her teeth chattered, with a tiny scowl wrinkling her forehead.

She wasn't grumpy, just cold.

What rune would fit Kenaz if they were to bind two runes? Beverly thought about it. ACTUALLY thought about it. Glancing up at her torch, as if she were having a discussion with it, she ended up saying, "Eihwaz, maybe." Pause. "Eihwaz represents perseverance and foresight, also wisdom. I think that would compliment Kenaz' illumination characteristic and boost knowledge." Sounded pretty fit to her.

By any chance, Professor Botros hadn't brought hot chocolate with him? She was almost tempted to poke at his pockets to check.

The flame died once more. Grumbling, Leah muttered the Galdr again, strengthening the light. Rushing up and following the students, she heard the professor ask a question. Oh, discussion time. Lucy decided to try again!
She grabbed the runestone and placed it in the same hand as her wand..
Next she started to weird chant..
Kenaz kenaz kenaz..ku ka ki ke ko..kun kan kin ken kon..ok ek ik ak uk..
Kaunnnnnnnnn"..She saw a little glow! She was happy!: finally a bit of warmth!

It was FREEZING, and AJ wouldn't know the answer to this question on a good day, much less on a day like today. It was all she could do to stay semi-warm, and to keep her little legs moving. She half listened to what everybody else was saying, and decided that "Ditto" was the best response that she could think of.

She was not going to let go of her sister. It didn't do much, but it sorta helped keep the blood flowing and that was a good thing. How much longer of this march did they have to do? What was the point of this after all? If they had actually been warm then she could understand, but considering that they weren't, she was confused.

That was the third attempt and Lucy wanted to do it!
Holding her wand and the runestone in her right hand and the torch in the other hand she started to chant!

Kaunnnnnnnnn"..She saw the flames!!!
Lucy felt as a caveman who had just discovered the fire and she began to jump for happiness!!

Angel was nearly clinging to her sister, though she was careful with all the torches and things around, she didn't want her sister to get hurt or burnt, though if they didn't stop this stupid march soon she would be taking her sister blazer so that she could keep warm, she didn't care what her sister would say.

"I'm so cold AJ." Angel shivered a bit, "I don't like it." Angel hoped that her sister would be able to do something to make her warmer, she hoped that the Professor was going to let them finish this march soon before she got frost bite or something, had the Professor thought about that?

The Narrator 06-11-2014 02:01 PM

The snowflakes continue descending on the marching students and their old professor. The freezing breeze is no longer a breeze but a chilling wind that brings MORE snow even. You notice as you walk that the snow level is dangerously increasing under your feet, it's up to your shins, or your knees even if you're young enough.

The cold wind put out a few torches;

Maybe she should try more chanting? Nah, she wasn't even sure that she would be able to get her teeth to stop chattering long enough to do any good. What if she messed up the spell and made it colder? This was a possibility that she just wasn't going to take a chance on. She sure wished her sister would radiate more body heat.

"M..m...meee t..t..too..oo.." As she kept walking she noticed that the snow was getting deeper, waaaay deeper. "P..p..p..ro..fessor... I'm up t..t..to m..m..my knees over here." In case he couldn't see that she was slowly sinking. Where did that bloody wind come from? The first year was violently shaking. This was insane. Torches going out caught her eye and she hoped that it wouldn't happen to her. She would be marching her little legs right back to the castle.

Weasley174 06-11-2014 03:09 PM

Angel wasn't liking this lesson one bit she was starting to feel really cold and she really wanted her sister blazer. "Sis can I borrow your blazer?" Angel put on her best puppy dog eyes as she shivered like crazy, the snow was getting deeper and she was hoping the Professor would realise that this was getting really bad. "Pretty please!!" Angel hugged her sister being careful with the torches again.

Angel looked at the Professor. "Professor I'm really... really... really cold." Angel was looking as her sister thought about marching her little feet back to the castle, she was thinking the same thing as well, she would march her little feet back to the castle if the snow got any worse.

DuckyLinJi 06-11-2014 03:33 PM

Glad that his torch was still burning, Kevin continued walking despite wanting to turn around and go back to the castle. A strong gust of ice cold wind swept over the landscape and the twelve year old shivered even more. The usual bad-mouthed Gryffindor was very quiet as he tried to stay warm by jumping up and down a few times.

He caught sight of a few torches blowing out and he would have felt bad for them ...if he had feelings... Nah, he had feelings. He just didn't think it was sad enough that some torches blew out. But then he remembered that the torches were also keeping them a little bit warmer and they definitely needed them all lit. Come on...put them back on!

The sudden snowfall was so drastic all of the sudden that the snow got up to his knees. "I agree with them!" he called out as well, agreeing with the Valentine's sisters. "I want to go back! i'm not freezing my legs off over a stupid walk!" He was serious. If the Professor wanted them to move further, he was going to turn around and head back to the castle....

WHO'S WITH HIM!?

Post 4 - Acknowledging Narrator

Like how far was the lake from the castle? Cris couldn't remember it being that far away, but for some reason, tonight it felt like they had walked for miles. Yes it was a little exaggeration here, but tell that to the parts of his anatomy that were complaining.

To top it off, the freezing breeze had now upped a couple of levels to a chilling wind that brought along with it....more snow. Which meant that the snow levels on the ground were getting higher. Cris was grateful he was tall, because the snow level only came up to his shins, but it still made walking through the snow a little more difficult and slower. Now that just meant that not only were his shoes wet, so were his socks and shins.

O_o wait! Some of the torches were getting blown out. He noticed that Leah and Lucy's were two of them. Cris immediately glanced up at his.

Keep burning...keep burning...

Sophie kept her eyes on her flaming torch as she listened to the professor talk. She was freezing, and it didn't seem like things would get warmer anytime soon. It was hard to think about runes under the conditions, but Sophie tried to.

She guessed it wasn't appropriate to raise her hand right now, out on a walk, so she didn't.

"What about Algiz?" she asked. "For protection..." Merlin only knew they needed that right now.

As they walked along, she chanted. "kenaz kenaz kenaz... ku ka ki ke ko.. kun kan kin ken kon.. ok ek ik ak uk… kaunnnnnnnnn.."

Post 3 - The cold snow

Austin walked along, now not really caring about his torch. It wasn't really doing anything for him anyways in terms of warmth. He was colder now than he was in the classroom, which he didn't think was possible. Is this professor nuts?! How was he sure that this professor was going to make sure everyone stayed together? Austin almost dropped his torch, turned around and went back to the castle. But the castle was NO WHERE IN SITE. They were literally in the middle of nowhere, with snow everywhere. He would rather lie down in the cold snow than to walk the rest of the way to the lake.

As he continued walking, he tried to chant to keep his flame going, but he was having a hard time saying it clearly. His teeth continued to chatter, and after a few minutes, he decided to just stop altogether. At this point, it didn't matter if the torch went out or not. It didn't matter if he lost house points for his flame dwindling. All that mattered to Austin Moore was warmth, and how he was going to get it.

Yeah, yeah, Botros could actually agree with the boy. And so he stood where he was and turned to squint against the snow at the shuddering line of students behind him. Aww, poor small things. "Alright, alright." He sighed and stopped.

Interesting question! Ab smiled at the young Gryffindor and gave her a brief, simple answer since they were basically being buried by snow. "There is two sides for every rune. In general, all runes can be good or bad, it depends on the intention of the wizard using them, and the purpose they're used for." He wanted to give her a few shoulder pats but they were kind of on a hurry so...

... oh Merlin, yeah, that was their cue to go back. Botros nodded at the young girl.

"ALRIGHT EVERYONE. Change of plans! Seems like it's a bad night for a stroll down the lake. Hold each other hands and let's get back to the castle! Come on!" Ab grabbed his torch, his wand and his runestone all in one hand and cast a powerful fire spell that illuminated the darkness around them for a second before the upper layer of snow melted under their feet creating a path back to the castle.

"Older students, you can try and melt the snow as we march back up to the castle. It's not a long road, be quick about it! If you can piggyback some younger students, too, that would be so generous. Come come!" The old man hobbled between the students, moving and melting away the thick layers of snow.

He didn't even have time to respond to their brilliant discussion about Kenaz! Pity.

Post 3-Slightly dark, whole-lot colder

Cutty's mobility was being effected as the snow rapidly deepened, they must have wondered under a large snow cloud the further away they drew from the castle. He was drifting further away from the larger Hufflepuff, which had been giving him some improved traction. That was, until the heavily falling snow began.

Some of the torches had gone out. It was purely visual, but Cutty thought he started to feel colder simply by the three less lights.

Cutty was drifting away from Cris's shadow and rapidly looking for another big'un to tail behind. Meanwhile the wind was getting to him and so he took his wand to his own robes and hit it with, "Ventus!". Spotting Botros up ahead near the newly extinguished Beverly Wayne, he made his way for them passing a firstie boy on his way over. His teeth were chattering interfering with his ability to do magic. And thinking of Somerlad's lesson, Cutty seized the opportunity to be friendly toward a firstie. "Hey mate! You look like you could use a bit of warmth.", he said before taking his wand to the boy and casting, "Ventus!". A hot jet of wind like that from a muggle hair-dryer came forth from the end of Cutty's wand.

Just in time too. Professor Botros had announced that they'd be heading back to the castle. Hot tea and the green fire. Hot tea and the green fire. Hot tea and the green fire. Arithmancy and then bed.

He he just say they could piggyback?

Some of the students were complaining now about the weather.

But.. But....But! They were probably almost at the destination where Botros intended to take them too.

Intrigued by all of the runes and whatnot, Simon wanted to discover where the Professor was taking them and what he was going to be saying more about binding the kneaz rune and whatnot. "Ventus," he whispered as he warmed himself up. Ahhh... Much better.

All of a sudden, some of the torches near Simon had gone out. Merlin\'s...! thought Simon as his eyes widened. Perhaps he should have suggested that they went with the protection charm as it looked like they needed it now. Were the Cold Ones nearby? He chanted once more, making his flame grow bigger; however, it was not nearly as big or strong enough to counter the harsh frigid wind or the darkness. He glanced at Cutty and then Ethan, wondering if the two of them were thinking what he was thinking. Could they even see his facial expression?

Who knew.

Before he could offer another suggestion, Botros suggested that they should head back. Taking back what he had thought before, he nodded. It was smart to head inside. Now they wouldn\'t be at risk of getting frostbite or something worse. He blinked all of a sudden when Botros said that the older students could give younger students piggyback rides. Merlin\'s beard, was this going to turn into another race?

....Maybe? He sort of hoped actually for the quicker they got back into Hogwarts, the sooner he\'d be by the fireplace.

Hold onto each other\'s hands?! Was this man SERIOUS?!

Grayson stared incredulously at the Ancient Runes Professor, holding his torch up higher as he did. He was all up for going back to the castle, even VERY glad for the whining students, but he was NOT up for mollycoddling anyone and holding their freaking hand. NO. They can hold their OWN hands while they trudged back up to the heat and the warmth, thank you.

Also. Which group of people was he in? The younger students or the older students? That was the problem with being a fourth year and right in the middle of the student age group. He was both a younger and an older student. And he was MORE than capable of trying to melt the snow. Maybe. As long as it didn\'t hinder the process of finding the warmth, he was all up for doing that.

Shivering, Grayson pulled out his wand and pointed it down at the snow near his feet. "V-v-ventus!" A small jet of hot wind blew out of his wand and hit the snow, "Ventus!" Come ON! He wanted to be able to move properly, already. And when did the snow build up so much, eh? He\'d thought that there had only been a bit, maybe just some snowflakes here and there. But NO. He was sure that there was going to be a snowstorm here and Ethan wasn\'t even the one behind it.

Oh jeez. The man had said piggybacks too, right? Oh MAN. Someone was going to jump on his back and give THEMSELVES a piggyback ride if he wasn\'t careful.

Fine. FINE.

Nigel was not giving anyone a piggy back ride. That was ridiculous. Now if someone forcibly jumped on his back. That was different because he did not encourage or want that person there. Holding hands was also ridiculous. Even an 11...12 year should know their way back to the castle at night. Even with this weird and spontaneous snow fall.

Nigel cast the hot air charm on the snow at his feet and started to make a path for him self heading back to the castle. Nice and simple. This is were being tall has an advantage. Since the snow does no get up that high on you.

And still no piggybacking or hand holding for Nigel.

Nope.

Post 4 - so much snow

Between the howling wind, and the snow pelting his ears, all Austin could hear was \'grab hands\' and \'head to the castle\'. He wasn\'t exactly sure whose hand he grabbed, all he knew was that he grabbed a hand, and turned towards the castle. Everyone here was a wizard for Merlin\'s sake! Surely they would have some sort of technology that told them what the weather was going to be like. Muggles have that sort of technology! Austin could tell that he was going to be sick after this. He wasn\'t entirely sure that anyone was going to be well enough to do anything. Half the school seemed to be here! He was really hating those who decided to skip today. They were sitting in their dorms or common rooms, enjoying a nice warm fire, while they were all freezing to death.

The snow was now up to his mid calves and he was having a hard time trudging through it. There was no way they were going to make it up to the castle safely. If someone were to faint, or trip, they would be lost in the snow, and the professor would have no idea. How could he? There were so many of them, and unless someone spoke up, he would have no idea. He prayed to Merlin that it wasn\'t going to be him falling in the snow.
