Okay, why did the Professor have to teach them about a creature that was so SCARY?!

The more she listened to the woman talk, the more she disliked them, and she really wanted to know what the practical part of this class would be. Hopefully there wasn't a Chort involved, but she could never know with a class like this. Not really knowing anything else about the creature, she remained silent and wished this class would end.

RachieRu 01-28-2014 09:13 PM

Errmmm. What spells. Grace scratched her head a little as she thought about the question. She was trying to think of a fast spell. Something that might have a good effect. Something sprung to her mind. But she was sure the spell could only be using on dementors. But if the creature made cold things... it might work too. She raised her hand, not being to confident. "Maybe a patronus charm... cause of the cold side? But.... then again maybe not... cause I thought the patronus was for dementors."

Edward Penguin 01-28-2014 09:14 PM

Ian was pleased that he had something close to a correct answer. He tried to listen closer to the professor's responses and tried to decipher what she was saying. Again, with his hearing seemingly damaged in some way, it was difficult.

He was surprised that a fire spell would have no effect on the creature. And when she said the winter storms and coldness came with the creatures, he shivered involuntarily. He thought and looked down at his fingers as he pondered an answer. A smile crossed his face as a thought came to him.

Would a portkey be useful? Perhaps you could place a portkey formed from something they like nearby so they would pick it up? He was kind of proud of himself for this answer. Get the thing far away. Maybe even to a Antarctica.

FireboltAvis88 01-28-2014 09:15 PM

Sander quickly jotted down what Professor Romanos had explained to the class. So the creature was very quick and smart. Maybe a spell that would neutralize that.

He reviewed all the possible spells that he knew in his mind, before raising his hand,"Professor how about a spell that will slow them down like the Jelly Leg Jinx or the Body Binding Curse. That should somehow slow it down, right?" Sander provided his answers

"Truth be told, their purpose hasn't exactly been...discovered. Yet. It's, difficult, to pinpoint just how they vork. They, in our belief, enjoy contradicting their actions. For example, coming back to their good versus evil nature. This stems from the observation that while they have been completely hostile tovards humans and animals by first glance, they haff also been noted to sometimes flee vithout any particular reason."

"They disappear vithout a trace for days or veeks on end vith no real time structure, only to reappear in sight for years vithout a proper reasoning from vot ve can tell. They are also, 'flamboyant', in a vay, vhere they tend to leave their victim's bodies in intricate patterns in plain sight, yet they haff been seen burying them far beneath the ground. Vot is troubling the team of scientists studying these creatures, is despite their size, they are very fast creatures, and smart too, very smart...yet their unexpected migration pattern has been extremely sluggish. Granted, studies of them haff proved to be...just as slow."

She paused for a moment to think. "Apart from their undiscovered purpose, ve can only assume, in theory, it's just in their nature to be destructive."

"There vere some good answers, but vot I vos looking for vos...fire magic. Fire spells literally haff no use ven dealing vith a Chort. The story in mythology of them being born of flame comes from this. Perhaps it's something in their fur or skin but...they just absorbed the flame like nothing." Folding the picture she held in half, she glanced to her watch before continuing.

"They somehow produce coldness vherever they go, bringing great vinter storms vith them, though vot you'll vont to really votch out for is their horns and bite. They haff a very deadly venom vithin their system that seeps through their saliva and horns, vhich causes an extreme and lethal similar to that of Tuberculosis that, rapidly spreads, to other parts of your body and bones...usually, ending...vith death." Ahem. "VITH that in mind..."

"Vot spells do you think vill vork best against the creature? Please don't rule anything out, even if you think it may not be 'strong' enough. Keep in mind, as I said to Miss Brown, they are very quick creatures. Very quick and very smart."

So... the beast was really a big mystery to them still? Awesome. "So they're just unpredictable and lethal and... they're coming toward us?" Sophie rested her head on her hand in dismay. She grew even more confused when the professor said that fire spells were of no use against a Chort, but they still produced coldness and brought winter in their wake. How did that make sense?

...Oh. What Ella assumed made sense, though. So... if fire spells can't be used on them, it'd make the most sense that freezing spells WOULD work, then, right? But... bringing winter storms with them? Did they just have some sort of control over both of those elements, fire and ice? Or did the beast indeed absorb all the heat and bring cold through the absence of heat?

Raising a hand in the air once more, Sophie suggested, "In addition to what some of the others have said..." she was mostly talking about Ella and Sander, who said the first two things that had come to her mind, "well, if they're so smart, would a Confundus Charm have any kind of affect on them? Buy some time? Is it even a powerful enough charm? Would it mess with their minds or are they so strong-minded that it couldn't be altered that way?"

Scribble and more scribbling. That was what Adi was doing as Professor Romanos addressed the students' responses. Fire. Fire was not good against the evil Chorts.

Adi pondered about the next question before raising his hand. "Maybe Duro, Professor? The Hardening Charm?''

Felixir 01-28-2014 09:48 PM

Toby's weird mood only appeared to last for a short while. He'd busied himself with his quill and the way the feathered end felt soft and calming against the skin on the back of his fans and his cheek, when he tested it. It was a weird sort of calming meditation. When he put his hand back up, he was no longer frowning, but had managed to make his face totally expressionless.

"Impedimenta." He said simply, not sure if he was saying it right. "Think it's a jinx."

And then he used his quill to write some actual notes.

lemon 01-28-2014 09:50 PM

"If fire magic is useless, would that mean explosions too, professor?" Because Alice would have totally suggested spells of that nature for this next question. Expulso! Bombarda Maxima! Explode all the things!

.... yeah, you know, Gryffindor at heart.

"I think any spell that targeted its senses would be useful, though, on account of that's what they use to get to you." She paused thoughtfully, trying to think of a good spell. "Conjunctivitis Curse, maybe?" It wasn't as cool or effective as exploding, in her opinion, but it could do some good.

TeafortheSoul 01-28-2014 10:04 PM

Alright, he'd volunteer an answer. West slowly put his hand up, looked directly at the professor and said," How about Impervius to protect yourself from contact with their bodily fluids." Because clearly that stuff had heinous effect. Just thinking slightly outside of the box here anyways.

Presley Black 01-28-2014 10:49 PM

Okay, if fire magic didn't work on the monster, would maybe the opposite do better? "What about magic that makes things cold? I mean like freezing spells and things." Because it seemed like what happened was that the demon stole all of the heat. Maybe he needed it to survive? Anyway, so if he needed heat, which was the theory Gwen was going with, then maybe denying him heat would cause him to not do so well.

Except that there wasn't really such a thing as cold. Cold was simply the absence of heat, so if the thing did feed off of heat, he would be able to find it anywhere. Unless it was absolute zero, which was highly unlikely because that was like -400 degrees or something. Fahrenheit.

DaniDiNardo 01-28-2014 10:51 PM

That answer was half promising.

Only reason it wouldn't be walking in through the window at any point would be a matter of territory and not danger? This was where Lex wanted to suggest a field trip, to wherever you would find these things but there was always time for that later, for now the girl sat and scribbled almost everything she heard that sounded like it could be of some use to her.

Suffice to say she didn't have an answer as to what might not work against it and was happy enough scribbling down responses and the Professor's final word on the matter. Fire was a no go. Not that she would have thought to use it anyway. Nah. Not when you had spells like Expulso.

The next question was just as tricky in the sense that it was the exact opposite of the last question. Lex didn't even know where to begin.

"I think given its speed you'd need to find a way to stop it so maybe stupefy or the body binding curse? I heard of this one man that tried keeping a Nundu and he kept stunning charms on it to keep it subdued. Would that work?" Nundu's were pretty massive creatures in their own right. It seemed legit...til the spell wore off one day without him knowing and the Nundu making a meal out of him.

Hey Ju 01-28-2014 11:15 PM

Needless to say Sophie beeeeeeeaaaamed at professor Romanos' words on Charms and how powerful they could be. Griiiiinning time! This Hufflepuff was now very happy.

So happy that she almost missed the rest of what the older witch said because her mind went elsewhere. Oooo, give examples they thought would work! Cool! "Uuuum, maybe the Aqua Eructo Charm? Like, a real powerful one? Enough to knock it back?" Or maybe just the Knockback Jinx, but... Sophie reckoned something to do with water would be better in this case because of the whole... fire vs. water thing. Maybe that didn't make sense, though... but what did she know about Chorts anyway?

Cassirin 01-28-2014 11:16 PM

It seemed like the easy answer to guess that a Patronus would work on the Chort, just as it worked on other Dark creatures... the lethifold and the dementor, for example. On the other hand, Mo wanted to practice his Patronus, and he knew he wasn't the only one, so...

What did it hurt?

"If the Chort is a Dark creature, wouldn't Expecto Patronum work on it? Also, is the Chort related to the Yeti or Sasquatch? They look like they have the same hairy mother." Which meant Mo wanted to be a Chort-stalker too.

oh its Erik ok 01-29-2014 12:29 AM

Nigel had the exact same questions as Mo. So it did not feel necessary for Nigel to repeat them. If a Patronus can stop a Dementor and Lethifold. Why wouldn't it work on old Chort? Plus using simple logic, if fire magic does nothing on Chort. Then what about Ice Magic or the Freezing Charm.

Made sense to Nigel and was already said.

He really did want to find out if this was related to the Yeti. That was the most important question.

Deezerz 01-29-2014 02:22 AM

A spell that worked best against a Chort? If speed was involved the first thing that came to mind was the Impediment Jinx, but someone - a Hufflepuff - said it before she even got the chance to raise her hand. Pfft.

Wrinkling her nose, she gave it more thought. Before she attempted to raise her hand again, the Ravenclaw guy (Mo) with a badge from Ancient Runes said something that almost made her laugh. Same hairy mother. Hehe.

Collecting herself, she raised her hand. "If they are so quick and smart, wouldn't confusing them be safe? Using the Confundus Charm on them." If they were confused it sort of made THEM the target, no?

hermionesclone 01-29-2014 02:24 AM

... Fire spells didn't work on them? That... was a shame. Alec did think it would work because of the creatures being used to the cold but if not... Frown. He stares down at the picture some more before scribbling down a few notes on what had been said. Quick, smart, born from fire. ... Like a Phoenix. Or an Ashwinder.

This... wasn't the right class to be thinking about that.

Placing his quill down, he looked down at the photo again. Clues. He had to think about this logically, right? A lot of things that the other students had said seemed right to him. And Patronus? He didn't know how he felt about that given things. But if the creature was heading west and they had to learn how to protect themselves, making sure he was good at this spell wouldn't be a bad idea.

Right. Answer. "Professor?" His hand went up in the air. "Erm... what about Expulso? It causes an explosion but... it uses pressure instead of heat. You could... explode something near the creature. Cause a diversion or..." Was killing it necessary? Probably. "I mean... could that work?"

And girlfriend was going to get hugs. Of course.

Rosa Chispa Princessa 01-29-2014 03:35 AM

oh, now things are certainly getting interesting, how to stop a chortle, hmm Oichi raised her hand, "Perhaps you could use the spell incarcerous to bind the chortle with rope, it works on centaurs though a demon may be a bit stronger, I'm not sure.".

Expecto-Penguin 01-29-2014 03:39 AM

Kace shrugged when he got the answer the wrong. At least he tried right? Then he heard the professor move on and it was kind of like the same question except thinking of spells that could work on the Chort. He heard the patronus charm and that could work. He agreed with the other students. Then he heard his idea being mentioned and he smiled and didn't wanna repeat it.

But he did like Alec's idea. He raised his hand and said, "Professor i agree with Alec's answer. I mean distracting the creature might help and then you can stun them."

Death. ... ... ... Yeah, Ella didn't want to think about it or talk about it or even consider being so sick that you...yeah. For reasons. Sad Ella was suddenly quite sad. She needed to shake it off, though. She could sort it out later.

"The Freezing Charm, Professor. If you could stop it in its tracks, you could prevent the spread of...well, lots of those bad things as well as get away."

Medea couldn't help but automatically smile. Even chuckle a little. "Very good, Miss Bishop. You are precisely on track." Summoning her notebook from the corner of the room, she made a short note inside of it before placing it to the side and out of her mind. "As for the freezing charm...sure, vhy not. I vould actually recommend this freezing charm above others, due to the vide age range of people using it as vell as it's lasting effects. Granted, it vould only be for a short vhile, but each second counts."

"The first spell ve'll be practicing...involves our feet. Anyone haff a clue on vot it is?"

Casey O 01-29-2014 05:28 AM

A spell that involved feet? Marigold eyed the Professor. Yeah, yeah, she trusted Romanos and all, but she wouldn't be the first Professor to go loopy.

But a spell that involved their feet.

This was such a weird questions! Marigold decided to go with just a general answer. "Any spell that requires stepping would involve our feet." Yep.

Felixir 01-29-2014 05:32 AM

Okay soooooooo... immobulus was better.

Tobias noted as much down as he possibly could until it was time to stand up. He scrawled the last part super untidily, and then did as he was told and stood, getting out his wand, even if he wasn't too keen on the practical side of this lesson today.

At the question, he half raised his hand.

"Maybe... the stickfast spell... hex... thing? It sticks feet to the floor." Meaning that was the logic behind the answer. To be honest, Toby sure why he hadn't said that first.

Was it even a hex? It was hard to remember the difference between jinxes, curses and hexes.

FireboltAvis88 01-29-2014 05:40 AM

Sander quickly picked up his quill and jotted down when Professor Romanos replied to everyone's answers. Practical? Yay...they were going to do it after all.

Sander quickly stood up making sure that he kept one hand on the desk, to avoid slipping and with the other hand took out his wand. Then he thought of spells that affected one's feet.

....and remembered one that he had used during dueling practice. Raising his hand he gave his answer,"Professor what about the Leg Locker Curse, Locomotor Mortis. It is used to bind the feet of the target together. So in this case, the Chort wouldn't be able to run....he could hop quickly...but definitely not run." Sander suggested.

DaniDiNardo 01-29-2014 05:44 AM

Just as she thought, something that would slow it down and maybe stop it after a few tries? Hope for getting that massive, man-eating pet was coming alive again. No way would she be like the idiot who got himself eaten by a nundu, she'd be on top of her guard!

Alexa went on scribbling, thinking of what she could do with all this information later one. DADA was probably one of the only set of notes she revised outside of class wouldn't prompting.

At the mention of the practical portion, Lex dropped her quill and was ready to get this thing going. Hand wand was out and itching to cast but all dreams of that died when the Professor mentioned not being able to cast? What even? Okay, patience. She could pretend she had some long enough to get through this guessing game Professors always liked playing.

"Dealing with legs, I'll go with the leg-locker jinx." They were just talking about slowing the Chort and now legs. It was real legit.

Deezerz 01-29-2014 05:48 AM

Practical portion, fiiiiiiiiinally. She was tired of answering questions all for the sake of house points. She stood up carefully, making sure to stand close to someone she could grab onto if she lost footing, then drew her wand out.

Beverly figured the spell they'd be using would be a charm, but what it was specifically? She could only guess.

Raising her hand, she said, "Could it be something like the Gripping Charm? It's good for slippery situations." And this was a slippery situation. She just wasn't sure if it was designed for feet.

WhittyBitty 01-29-2014 05:51 AM

Lux got to her feel as they were told that it was the practical part of the lesson. Still feeling a little unsure, she figured if anything bad happened at least she had friends nearby and the Professor to help as well. Raising her hand at the question, she offered an answer. "What about that spell that locks your legs together? Maybe it could be used against the Chort?

Presley Black 01-29-2014 06:04 AM

It wasn't a terrible idea. That meant it was really bad. Gwen ducked her head and looked down at her knees. She had even thought about how it wasn't a very good idea after she said it. Why hadn't she amended her statement right then? Because Iestyn was right, she was pretty stupid.

Competition? She brightened at that word and jumped to her feet. Unlike some of her classmates, nothing was affecting Gwen's ability to move. She'd heard rumors that it was a time-thief stealing their youth or something. The thought was pretty frightening, but as long as Gwen remained unaffected, there wasn't a problem as far as she was concerned.

"We could use spells that cause the Chort to trip? Or not be able to move it's legs?" Hadn't she seen a student do that in the school hallway just the other day? It seemed like a valid thing to Gwen.

Mell 01-29-2014 07:59 AM

A spell that would involve the legs? Michael could think of a few and so apparently did the other students because they had just named the ones he had been thinking.

So he decided to go outside of the box. He raised his hand. "What about Levicorpus? It hangs you in the air by your feet." He couldn't see why that wouldn't work on a Chort.

Poolicious 01-29-2014 08:12 AM

Messer quickly jotted down what Professor Romanos said. Practical time? Finally. Wand out. Huh? They need to stand up? Okay that might be a problem for him since his back still hurt and his legs feel a little weak but he was looking forward for the practical portion. The Seventh year carefully got up and put his hand on the desk to steady himself.

The first spell ve'll be practicing...involves our feet. Hands up. "Jelly-Legs Curse, Professor?" He offered. That curse could give them sometime to run from the creature, no?

Lexers 01-29-2014 08:58 AM

Lucas was a) fascinated by this weirdo horned creature that looked a lil' bit like a yeti but was cooler because it was so dangerous and b) grossed out by this weirdo horned creature. His first instinctual answer had been the jelly legs curse (something he'd come across his vast, read: sparse, preliminary readings) but that had been said, twenty times over so he just took notes.

What did LEVICORPUS do? Now that was a good question.

Rosa Chispa Princessa 01-29-2014 09:45 AM

Oichi felt giddy for getting the answer right and felt even more intrigued to know it could be used to conjure more then just ropes, Awesome!!! She then listened as the lesson progressed and realized they would be getting on their feet and moving soon. She hoped her now elderly changing body would not get in the way too much. Its mind of over matter, you are as young as you choose to feel, gulp, I hope Oichi then heard the next question and did her best to answer it, Oichi raised her hand, "Well one of my favorite spells involving the feet is the dancing feet spell, sure the leg locker curse may be more common but if you want to make a truly terrifying encounter more comedic and perhaps relieve some tension to help you think more clearly I would think the dancing feet spell would be great. Plus once their feet are out of there control you can easily body bind them. ".

FearlessLeader19 01-29-2014 01:31 PM

When Adi had suggested Duro, he had no idea he would be correct. He scribbled that down on his parchment along with some of the other correct answers from his classmates.

And then it was time for the practical lesson! Finally! Adi grabbed his wand, eager to get started. But first, the question. Adi had an idea. He raised his hand. ''How about Tarantallegra, Professor?''

Ian tried to hide his disappointment. Of course he had been trying to get the creature to get transported, but I suppose that transporting yourself was just as good. Come to think of it, why not just apparate? Of course he was too young to apparate, according to what he was told here at the school, but maybe in a pinch.

When she asked the students to stand, Ian exhaled. Now I've got to stand. This should be interesting.Ian thought to himself. He picked up his cane, placed it in an upright position and used it and the desk as a way to push himself to a standing position. He reached inside his robe and pulled out his wand and wondered how to do this. He was right handed and he was already occupying that hand with the cane. Perhaps he could try left handed. He'd never done that before, but maybe it was a good opportunity to learn to be ambidextrous, in case he lost an arm or something.

In answer to the professor's question, he responded Would that be the leg-locking curse?

Lady of Light 01-29-2014 03:13 PM

Delilah took out her wand from her bag and stood up. Heh. The practical session of the class was about to begin. She was excited, to say the least.

..... But, another question! WHAT. Couldn't she just tell them what the spell was? SIGH. This professor was rather annoying. Anyway.. Something to do with the feet. Hmm. She frowned a for a moment before raising her hand to answer the question. "The Jelly-Legs curse?" That was the only one she could think of at the moment.

Spell involving feet. HMM. Tarantallegra, sure. Astrid knew that. She also knew the Jelly-Legs Curse so that was no big deal. She was considering the Toenail-Growing Spell but... c'mon, why would you want a demon to have extra long toenails? That would've made it even more dangerous than it already is, so Astrid mentally scratched that out of the possible list of spells involving the feet.

She raised her hand. "The stickfast hex perhaps, Professor? It makes the victim's shoes or feet stick to the ground," Astrid said. Colloshoo was the incantation, yeah? She reminded that. Not sure if she's read it before or if it was in her past lessons but yeah whatever. She was so down for the activity part of this class. Enough theory stuff. It made her brain hurt.

Anna Banana 01-29-2014 04:04 PM

So fire was out of the question?

Well, that did it. Grandmother Lafay would be toast if she ever came across one of these things.

So what then? And it didn't escape Sophie that there was mention of an Inter-house competition. Merlin only knew the Slytherins needed a few extra hundred house points at this points. Maybe they'd be playing for them. So anyway...about that foot spell. "I'm going to go with the Leg-Locker," she said, raising her hand. "Put 'im in his place!"

hermionesclone 01-29-2014 04:52 PM

... Stand up?

... Erm... okay.

Sloooooooowly, and with the use of both of his hands, Alec pushed himself up into a standing position. There. That wasn't so bad, was it? He didn't even groan or grumble, just stood there letting out a puff of air. The idea of a practical portion sat well with the part of him that wanted to do well in this NEWT and... wanted to be able to protect himself against a creature like this. Yeah.

People were smart, did they know? He had hardly managed to get up and there were already answers flying around. He couldn't think of anything new so, instead resorted to tapping the floor once or twice. Slippery. Why was it so-- ... Oh. The hand went up in the air. "They all sound reasonable but... I think I'm going to go with the Stickfast Hex. Erm... because of the slippery floor," Nodnod.

feeheeheeny 01-29-2014 05:06 PM

Her answer hadn't been strictly wrong, but it was still no good. That was okay, though. Y'win some, y'lose some., she reassured herself. Romanos was right, of course, when she thought about it more - that probably WASN'T the smartest idea. Still, it hadn't been her first choice of answer, so if Sophie ever encountered the thing, maybe she'd still have better luck, as her instinctive answers of the freezing charm and full-body bind would have some kind of effect on the creature.

Sloooooowly but surely, the second year pushed herself to a standing position using the wall as a support and flicked her wand from its holster. She had been down too long, she knew, because her legs were wobbly and tingly and her bottom was sore. Sophie pondered the professor's question for awhile, listening to all the other students' answers in the mean time.

...Yeeeeep. All of those sounded like good answers, and she couldn't think of anything else that involved the feet or legs, so... she kept her hand down this time.

Lissy Longbottom 01-29-2014 06:04 PM

UGH they'd have to get moving soon, wouldn't they? NOOOOOO. Caleb wanted to SIT and rub his achy joints in his knees. He raised his hand though, figuring now was as good a time as any to start talking again. "I'm gonna go with Jelly-Legs Jinx. If the floor is slippery it'll be REALLY hard to try and stand on it," he added. That'd be kind of fun for an activity, right?

Fun for OTHERS of course, and fun for HIM watching, but he wasn't about to do any of that.

carpediem 01-29-2014 06:11 PM

Caelen hurriedly stood with the rest of the class. Standing meant that things were happening. Spell things. Defensy things. Which meant adventure things. Were they going to practice a defense spell against something that looked slightly like a Chort? Because the real one sounded dangerous. Though at Hogwarts, it was a scarily real possiblity. THough she was going to be running the other way if it got too dangerous. The redhead liked to pretend that she was brave and showed it sometimes, but she had her limits. She was only eleven after all.

Ummm, with your feet? FEET? Did this involve laying on the ground and using your feet to cast the spell? Like holding the wand with your feet? Would that even work? The first year made a mental note to try that when she got home. OF course when no one was watching. It would be reaaallly awkward if her mom taught her laying on the ground and trying to do spells with her feet. Or like maybe you had to plant your feet in the ground to make sure you didn't fly backwards? That made more sense. And involved less wand to feet action. Either way, Caelen didn't have a total clue. Just a random collection of clues that made no sense.

Which meant that it was time to write notes and observe everything. Because she wanted to look at EVERYTHING HOgwarts had to offer. Homeschooling did that to you. And well, Hogwarts wasn't as boring as a small white room in her Aunts basement. But painting was a class there sooo... it evened itself out well.

And though it was a feeling that she shouldn't have THIS late in her Hogwarts year, Caelen felt a pang of homesickness again. Of course; she felt it before, but the eleven year old thought that she oppressed it well then and it didn't come into play. But now, it hit. So, fighting the small frown on her face, she opened her notebook and started to write down all of the new notes she had to do. Important things were important.

oh its Erik ok 01-29-2014 07:24 PM

Nigel did not really have much to add. He guessed you could try a permanent stick on the Chort's legs if you were fast enough. But you would need to be really really lucky. Though to be fair you would be lucky if any spell would hit Chort.

You could just aim the freezing charm at the legs also. Maybe Nigel was taking to too literally and it was just the leg locker curse or Jelly-Legs Curse. But those seemed too easy an answer.

Summoning her notebook from the corner of the room, she made a short note inside of it before placing it to the side and out of her mind. "As for the freezing charm...sure, vhy not. I vould actually recommend this freezing charm above others, due to the vide age range of people using it as vell as it's lasting effects. Granted, it vould only be for a short vhile, but each second counts."

"A portkey?" she repeated to make sure she understood the lad right. Goodness, that certainly was out of the box. Though she smiled all the same. "I vouldn't so much use the portkey upon the creatures rather than yourself, Mister Tinker. Yet a portkey is rather complex magic. We're going to be vorking on something more your level today."

"Quite certainly, yes." she nodded. "Good, Miss Rehman."

"Also known as a hex, yes." she nodded slowly. A little information about the spell added into the mix couldn't hurt any of them. "I vouldn't really recommend this spell though? It's duration of vorking is frail already, and these are large creatures, very adapt to veather that vould normally make one...slow. It may very vell overcome the jinx faster than you'd like. You may use the spell if you so vish, but as I mentioned to Miss Bishop however, I vould suggest using the freezing charm, Immobulus."

"Explosions? No, they aren't quite useless. An explosion is not just flame, Miss Fischer, but also pressure. And pressure...is very useful. Especially ven you vont to knock something back...or very vell disembody something." Which could get messy. Both physically and emotionally.

"Oh, that is a very clever thought. Yes, the conjunctivitis curse vould very much vork." The professor nodded encouragingly, though wasn't finished. "However, unless you haff rather great aim, I vould lean tovards using something else."

Were her eyes and ears deceiving her? West Odessa speaking up in a positive manner!

"One of the best answers yet, Mister Odessa. Thank you."

Oh, what a precious dear.

"I...vould not recommend using spells that only enhances vot it naturally lives in? I mean, it's not a terrible idea, Miss Jensen. It's actually a very smart idea to use it's strengths against it, but...in this particular case, unless you're freezing the creature in a block of ice, I vould caution you to use something else."

It was great enough that the students were realizing that speed was important to subdue. "I vould recommend the body binding curse over stupefy or the jelly legs jinx. Mostly due to the fact that it vill take a number of repeated hits vith stupefy to make it vork, vhich doesn't quite vork in your advantage, and they'll throw off the jelly legs jinx like it vos nothing. Granted, the body binding curse von't completely immobolize them, but it vill slow them down greatly."

"Good, Miss Campbell." she nodded to the seventh year before her eyes lit up. "You know vot? This spell paired along vith Miss Jensen's suggestion of freezing spells could possibly vork vonders."

Only con of the matter was it needed two people.

She couldn't deny that the students weren't in their creative mind sets today. "It also vorks upon the lethifold as vell, Miss Paton." she smiled to the first year. Perhaps she didn't know the creature? "However, I vould caution not using the patronus charm against a Chort. It absorbs heat, not emotion."

Turning her attention solely upon Mo, Medea's eyebrows raised somewhat. "They do, don't they? Though it is unclear. For now. I think ve're still trying to determine it's origins for one."

Slowly nodding her head from side to side, pondering their questions, a sort of grimace crossed her featuers. It was a tough call. "You know, I vouldn't advise you to do so. Oh, it'll haff an effect on the creature, for sure, but not exactly the one you'd vont. Bringing confusion to a creature that is already hostile tovards someone or something, possibly due to fear, you vouldn't vont to add vood to a fire you're trying to extinguish. So to speak."

"That could very vell vork, Mister Summers, yes." she smiled to the boy. "Good."

"During those few seconds of distraction, if it vos between trying to stun the creature and just plain running avay from it, I vould choose the running, Mister Lecium." Honest to Merlin. "It takes quite a few stunning spells to subdue the creature. Quite a few powerful ones at that."

Oh, yes! "Excellent, Miss Paulidine! Yes. That is actually one of the spells ve vill be doing today, though it von't be ropes ve'll be conjuring." Taking a quick glance at her watch, Medea clicked her tongue. A little behind schedule.

"And on that note, I think now is a good time as any to start our practical portion of the class so ve haff enough time to do our little inner house competition. Ve'll be going over at least two spells today, three if ve haff time. Othervise, I'll assign it to you for homevork. SO, everyone....stand up. Get your vonds out." No using them yet! "Remember to votch your footing."

And Victor Bay here...got a little nudge. Up you go too!

"The first spell ve'll be practicing...involves our feet. Anyone haff a clue on vot it is?"

Bay felt a nudge, oh he had to get out of his comfortableness. But since Professor Romanos was being so nice he stood up and took out his wand.. "would we be working on the leg locker spell Professor?" he asked while looking up at her.

Making sure his footing was okay he waited for the rest of the lesson to resume.

The seventh year slowly rose to her feet, knee practically screaming in pain. Her wand free hand drifted under her robes to touch it, and.... did it... did it feel swollen? Trying not to focus on her bodily issues, she directed her attention to the professor's words instead. Of course she knew there was pressure in explosions, but Alice had been thinking since most of them involved fire, they'd not be an option. Apparently, though, they were.

Which led to her next answer. "Are we going to be exploding feet, prof? Blasting 'em off? Bombarda Maxima? Expulso?" Yes, please! She hadn't made a good eruption in ages. Could they?

Giving Romanos a hopeful look, she awaited her response.

TakemetotheBurrow 01-29-2014 08:33 PM

Ella wasn't sure why Romanos was smiling and chuckling at her thought process but she was going to take it as a good sign. Eyebrows went up a tiny bit when she then jotted something down but yeah, no questions about that. She'd simply ponder what was written quietly. It was nice to know that her spell suggestion was useful too. Y'know, in case she ever came face-to-face with a Chort.

And then they were standing up. Or meant to, anyway. The eighteen year old bit her lip and stood up quite slowly, straightening out with a little wince. Sore lower back was sore. She'd need to ice that later. Mhm.

Wand in one hand, other hand pressed gently to her side, Ella listened to the others offer spells that had to do with feet and legs. She agreed with their suggestions so she didn't offer up anything else. She did shoot a curious look at Hulk, though. Blasting off feet, really? ...Gryffindors.

Expecto-Penguin 01-29-2014 09:31 PM

Kace understood what the professor was saying. He shrugged and it seemed logical to run for your life before stunning them. He made a mental note. Now he heard the professor move on and she wondered what spell involved their feet. He raised his hand and gave a guess.

"Professor would you need to use the leg locking curse?" That involved your feet right?

Bazinga 01-30-2014 02:56 AM

Let's face it Bart wasn't paying attention the minute that picture moved in front of him. He was staring at it and his mind was asking a bazillion questions about the creature and making all kinds of visual images of scenarios that would happen if he had ever found one and what he would do. It would be awesome and epic and he needed to find one now.

His eyes went back to the professor when he heard about what spell they would do first. Oh they were actually going to learn spells this was great. He wondered which awesome defense spell they might do, but then she said about a leg thing or better yet feet. If it's feet why was everyone saying legs? Weird or at least he found it weird.

"Can we learn something that makes someones toe nails grow and grow and grow until they can't walk." That sounded cool.

"Good, good. Those of you who mentioned the stickfast hex and I believe the gripping charm vos mentioned, you are right on trap." Admittedly...Lex liked Alice's idea best--so long as they weren't exploding her feet. That was the big deal breaker right there. Explosions were cool and everything until you got caught on the wrong side of them. Unfortunately Alice wasn't right and no one would be explodigng anything today, rather they were learning some spell that worked best on shoes. The Gryffindor was in luck, she happened to be wearing shoes, yup and had a habit of wearing them when she went out and about.

Lex made a note of the incantation before watching carefully the Professor's demontration of the wand movement. It would be easily remembered for the candy reference and Alexa could appreciate that.

The girl drew her own wand at the Professor's go ahead and gave the wand movement a few tries. Twist and horizontal flick. Over and over she did this movement, ignoring the ache she felt in her wrists as she did. They weren't accustomed to such hard work, well actually they were but they were behaving like old people bones and she couldn't actually accept this. Twist and horizontal flick.

Lex was prepared to keep at this until the movement became a fluid one where she wouldn't hitch even a little while trying to cast. Wand movement counted in spells. obviously they did or ever spell would be able to work with a simple jab. Obviously.

Twist and horizontal flick.

Cassirin 01-30-2014 03:31 AM

So... true fact of the day? Alice Fischer was going to blow something up by the end of term. She was basically just laying out the plan for everyone, and no one else seemed to be taking her seriously. Merlin knew she was smart enough to get it done.

So they were learning a gripping charm? While it wasn't immediately apparent what this had to do with large yeti creatures, at least it was dead useful in running away. Which, to be honest, was what Mo would do if ever presented with a Chort in the woods. He twisted and flicked his wand gamely... and made sure to watch out for any Alice Fischers trying to blow stuff up.

They were learning a spell to help them run away better.

Yeah.

Should've figured.

West practiced the wand movement in silence. Sideways candy cane. OK. Not hard. And his shoes were leather.... the soles weren't though. He eyed his rather long booted feet and glanced up at Romanos again.

Henshu?

"Henshu." He repeated dutifully.

He was mentally writing a petition in his head.

FearlessLeader19 01-30-2014 03:38 AM

So the feet Dancing spell wasn't correct but the spell they were about to do sounded really cool. Adi began to practice, starting with the incantation. "Henshu...Henshu...Henshu...Henshu...'' Not bad. That was pretty easy.

Time for the wand movement which seemed a tad bit tricky. A twist followed by a horizontal flick, twist and a horizontal flick, twist and a horizontal flick. After a few moments, Adi felt he was ready to try it on his shoes.

''Henshu!''
A twist and horizontal flick...

LilFox06 01-30-2014 03:40 AM

That. Thing. Was. Uggggggggggly. It was like a white yeti with giant sheep horns. Mitchell continued to stare at the picture wondering how that thing moved. Did it run on two feet? Four? Four and the horns? Maybe it just rolled around?

... and why were they studying it? What exactly did Teach mean by "until now." Ominous. Veryyy ominous.

And fire or ice didn't stop it. Noted. Not that his first reaction would be to light something like that on fire. He wasn't crazy. You tie things like that up and make a run for it. Oh. Sweet. That was the proper response too.

Now it was time for the practically part. Mitchie obviously chose really good times to space out. He casually aimed his spell towards his shoes. Sideways candy cane flick. Seemed simple enough. He tried out the wand movement a few times before saying "Henshu."

Now. Were they going to be given an ice rink to test the spell out on? Because that would be fun.

Grrr..Meow 01-30-2014 03:51 AM

Bay listened and learned that they weren't going to learn to leg locker spell, oh well he couldn't wait to get started.

Planting his feet he took out his wand and twisted in the air as the Professor Romanos did.. like a weird sideways candy cane. "Henshu" Bay Practiced. "Professor am I doing this right?" he asked while swiping the grey hair away from his face.

"Henshu" that has to be right… right...

FireboltAvis88 01-30-2014 03:55 AM

Sander had to admit that he had thought of suggesting the Stickfast Hex spell but after the younger Hufflepuff had provided the same answer he was going to suggest himself, he didn't want to sound like he was copying the younger lad.

But that was alright, he had at least given another possible answer. But it was now time to practice the new spell. He quickly wrote down the incantation and the wand movements into his journal.

Text Cut: Sander's DADA journal

Incantation: Henshu
Wand movement : a quick twist followed by a horizontal flick. Looks like a horizontal candy cane

First he practiced saying the incantation, "Henshu....Hen..shu...Hen...Shu....Henshu"

Then he practiced the wand movements. Taking out his wand, he made a quick twist, followed by a horizontal flick. He practiced it over and over again until his wand movements became fluid and smooth.

What?

"Good, good. Those of you who mentioned the stickfast hex and I believe the gripping charm vos mentioned, you are right on trap." Standing up herself, she smoothed out her vest as she continued speaking. "The reason ve aren't going to be practicing the jelly legs jinx or leg locker curse... or the dancing feet charm..." Or toenail growing spells. What? "...is because ve vill be practicing something a little more...suitable, for this type of creature. Something they can't overcome so easily. But more of that later."

"Ve are actually going to be practicing a spell similar to both the stickfast hex and gripping charm, upon your shoes. It basically makes the traction upon the bottom of your shoes incredible. Very useful for a variety of situations, especially if you need to move about quickly and are upon rather slippery or soft ground." Such as dueling, or...running. Quickly rolling up her right sleeve, she readjusted her grip on her wand. "Granted, this spell vill vork on anything, even flesh, but the results just aren't as great as it is vith shoes. Leather I should say. You'll get the best results of this spell vith leather."

"You all ready?" YES? "The incantation for this spell is Henshu. Hen-shu. The vand movement is a twist and horizontal flick, like...a sidevays candy cane. Votch me. Carefully." With the demonstration, she held out her wand and gave a quick twist and horizontal flick...and then proceeded to demonstrate a second time.

"Feel free to start practicing if you don't haff any questions. Remember, aim for your shoes. Please."

OOC: Hai everyone! Goodness gracious, RL has gotten the better of me this week, hence the slow posts. BUT, be aware, now the posts will be arriving a bit faster. Congratz on sticking around this long! We'll be finishing very soon and getting on to more fun things. Gold stars for everyone!

Tessa watched closely as the Professor performed the wand movement, practicing it a few times on her own as the Professor kept talking. She wanted to get it right. As they were allowed to practice, she quickly scribbled down a few notes on the spell and how it was performed before turning away from the parchment to do the fun part- practicing!

"Henshu," she murmured to herself, making sure the pronunciation was correct. "Henshu. Hen-SHU. HEN-shu... Henshu." Finally comfortable with the spell wording, she did a few more twists and flicks with her wand, making sure her wrist was properly warmed up to the motion before she tried the spell.

"Here it goes," she murmured, looking down at her left shoe. It wasn't leather, but she hoped it would still work. She made a note to invest in some leather soled shoes. "Henshu," she cast, performing the proper movement of the wand. Now, to test out her 'new' shoe!

WhittyBitty 01-30-2014 04:11 AM

So she hadn't even been close in her answer to the question. Now that she thought about it, this spell made a lot more sense since a quick getaway from an evil demon was a good thing. The Chort would be haunting her dreams tonight, that was for sure.

With her wand, she made a sideways candy cane motion with her wand while saying, "Henshu." She repeated the spell over and over again to practice as she tried to keep her head as clear as possible; if a Chort ever came near her, she wanted to be able to get away quickly.

Sideways candy cane motion. "Henshu." Sideways candy cane motion. "Henshu/" Sideways candy cane motion. "Henshu."

After a little while of practicing it in the air, she decided to try it on her shoes. Sadly, they were not leather, but they would have to do. Looking down at her feet, she cast the spell on her shoes. Hopefully it would work.

Cassirin 01-30-2014 04:11 AM

Henshu? It didn't sound like a Latin base, which would normally interest Mo at least a little. Not at the moment, though, because he was busy staring at his shoes and thinking about whether or not he wanted them to be grippier. Plus, he was thinking about running away, and about casting the spell correctly.

He had a very busy brain.

And sideways candy canes made him really hungry. Mo practiced the motion again and again before pointing at his left shoe. "Henshu." Did it work?

TeafortheSoul 01-30-2014 04:17 AM

West did the candy cane again, and this time put it with the incantation. "Henshu!" And at his shoe of course. Just one shoe. He stood up and compared them, trying to work out if the bespelled boot was in fact more grippy. If he'd done it right.

... it FELT like it was... maybe?

He was less aware of the slickness of the floor at least, so that'd help with balance definitely. Maybe the other boot too then, see how it went?

See he WAS at least TRYING in here, even if he had bones to pick and all.

Gwen has questions

"But that's not defensive!" Gwen blurted automatically. She felt bad right after. She didn't want to lose her house points, but really! Running away was cowardly. Besides, what if they were in a situation where they couldn't run? How were they supposed to defend themselves against this demon? It wasn't fair, preparing them to be helpless.

"Sorry," she apologized. "But what if we're on mud, or sand? It won't matter how much traction our shoes have got. They'll stick to the ground right beneath us and that's it, right?" Didn't anyone else see the problem with this?

Oh? An eyebrow twitched upwards momentarily.

"Quite right." Despite the girl's troubled thoughts, Medea didn't particular understand where the girl wanted to go with this. "And I'll be hoping, as smart as you students are, if you're in a situation vhere you are stuck in a deep muddy or deep sandy areas, you'll know that this spell vould be quite pointless." Because they WERE smart students. Not ones to make excuses for everything and not think out of the box.

"There is not a spell out there that has universal effects, Miss Jensen. There vill be parts you vish a spell had, and doesn't. It's frustrating, I know. That is vhy, ve must take time to study all options. Vhich you can do on your own, or vait and hope that vot you vont to learn vill show up in your lessons." Which could take a long time or not at all. "Today though, ve are learning Henshu."

She took a moment before her attention was turned to Victor. The spell's incantation she heard, but the movement she had yet to witness. YET. "Your pronunciation is vonderful." she smiled lightly and nodded to the fifth year. "Let me see the vand movement."

None of them slipped getting up so far, sooooo...

Good. Good progress so far. They were using their senses at least.

"Try and skate upon the floor." she suggested, glancing out across the class. "If you can't, than you know you've done the spell right. If you're too stuck to the floor vhere you can't move, than a simple 'finite' vill reverse the effects. Same goes for reversing the effects of this spell in general."

Gwen wanted to argue more. The class was called "Defense Against the Dark Arts." This was hardly any form of defense at all. But she had done enough arguing for one class. Besides, the teacher seemed to have the sort of air that told her if she tried to argue more she would certainly lose, and Gwen didn't like losing.

Time to try the spell. Gwen looked down at her ragged cotton shoes. Certainly not leather. And she was a little bit afraid that if they stuck to the ground they would come off of her feet. Well, that wasn't the point, apparently. The point seemed to be that she learn the spell, no matter what reservations she had against it. She processed the thought bitterly, careful to keep a smile on her face. Ever the lawyers daughter.

"Henshu," she tried, mimicking the wand motion and ending with the wand pointed at her right shoe. Experimentally she slid her foot forward across the ground. Nope. No traction. It was because it lacked intent. She had been here long enough to know that intent was half the battle. For a moment she imagined that they were learning actual defense. She wouldn't want to slip in the middle of a fight. "Henshu!" Again. This time it was more difficult to slide the foot, though jumping clearly wasn't a problem.

This class was useless and Gwen was angry at it. Why didn't anybody else have a problem with the fake defense? She supposed she could do research on her own, the way the professor had suggested, but it wasn't as easy for Gwen. She didn't understand that it would take Gwen an hour to misread a page, or she would have to convince another student to read it to her. She'd learned quickly that audio books didn't exist at Hogwarts.

Now the left shoe. Done. This was easy and pointless. Smile, nod, do as you're told, and study by yourself later, she instructed herself carefully.

FireboltAvis88 01-30-2014 05:05 AM

Okay it was time for him to try the spell on himself. Knowing how slippery the floor had been for his leather shoes earllier, Sander was eager to see how it felt after he had cast the spell on his shoes.

With a quick twist and a horizontal flick of his wand, he pointed it down at his shoes and concentrating on what he wanted the spell to do, he said the incantation,"Henshu!".

Now to see whether the spell worked. Sander slowly moved one foot and another. He could actually feel the soles of his shoes grip the floor better than it had done earlier at the beginning of the class.

Then he heard the Professor's suggestion. Skate? Sander began to grin. Why hadn't he thought about trying out the spell that way. So he first ended the spell, pointing his wand at his shoes and said,"Finite."

Then he let fly as he moved his feet in the way he did when he skated every day during ice hockey practice. Keeping clear of the other students, Sander skated across the room. He moved his feet in a semi circular motion to come to a stop.

Now for the spell. With a quick twist and horizontal flick of his wand, he pointed it at his shoes and said, "Henshu".

Now to try skating again. He tried to slide his shoes across the floor like he had earlier done but this time he could feel the friction of the floor against the soles of his shoes. Sure he could still move across the floor but it wasn't as slick as it had been a minute earlier.

The spell did indeed work.

DaniDiNardo 01-30-2014 05:12 AM

Wand movement down it was time to give the incantation and finally the spell a shot. This would explain why the floor was so slippery. It would make the difference much easier to tell. Like if the floor was still normal she'd never know how good the grip on her shoes were. Made sense. Mhm.

"Henshu...hen-shu...hen-shuuuu." It wasn't even that hard and there was no need to stick to it until she got the pronunciation. It was pretty basic afterall.

Now which shoe would she be trying it on first. Hmmm...she'd go with the right. Twist and horizontal flick. "Henshu!" There was the light from the wand and all but she needed to know if it actually worked or was a cheap shot by her darling wand. Alexa took one step with the left, noting the slippery surface then a step with the right.

There was a difference. She could tell. This would come in handy when trying to outrun a chimaera. Nevermind that it was still faster and would get you anyway, at least you'd know you didn't die because you tripped!

Bright side?

Holmesian Feline 01-30-2014 05:14 AM

A spell for better traction.

That was a interesting one and certainly would have been useful when entering the classroom at the beginning of the lesson with the slippery floor. But then the floor was likely made that way on purpose in connection with the spell after all. Something to try it out upon once they had learned it. Whatever the case, the professor verbally pulled Ben from his musings, giving both the incantation and the wand movement for the sticky...for the traction....for whatever the spell was called since if it had been said, he obviously had missed it.

"Henshu...." he said quietly almost to himself as he wrote it down into his notes as well as the directions. "Hen-shu...hen-shu...henshu." Was it him or did it not sound like Latin which he had thought he had learned most spells had some root in? The Gryffindor shook his head as he absently moved his hand in the demonstrated movement...without wand for now.

Twist and horizontal flick.
Twist and horizontal flick.
Twist and horizontal flick.

Deezerz 01-30-2014 05:31 AM

She'd been on the right track, great. Of course, Bev had watched her brother use the gripping charm more than once. He even went as far as telling her a professor here at Hogwarts had taught it to him and about a flag game that involved it.

Listening to professor Romanos, Bev thought this spell would be great against Kennedy's silly trick of icing the floor when they raced down the manor halls. Well, if only she could use magic outside of school.

Shrugging the thought off Beverly moved on to the next step. The spell. "Heeen - shuuu." Sounded about right. "Heeenshuuuu." Not bad. "Henshu." More forceful. Yup. That's how it was done.

Beverly repeated it a few more times, feeling more comfortable as she went. As for the wand movement. She tried the twist and horizontal flick several times. Huh. It WAS like a sideways candy cane. All she need was the actual candy cane.

Sweets later, spell now. She pointed at her black Chucks, and for a moment she wished she had worn pants instead of the uniform skirt. Oh well. All she had to do was not fall. GULP.

"Henshu!" She didn't feel anything change, nor a tingle on her feet. Did it work?

Beverly raised her foot, or at least attempted to. It felt as if she'd stepped on gum. That was a good sign. INNER BEAM.

Casey O 01-30-2014 05:42 AM

Marigold sighed and stretched out her arms before putting her notes down. FINALLY, the activity. Not that she couldn't handle sitting still for that long buuuuut... activities were fun. And one that you could try on yourSELF!!! That seemed interesting. But she had never even heard of this spell. Was this a bad thing?

It probably was a bad thing, considering her goal of 12 OWLs. But it was okay, she could recover from this by learning it, RIIIIIGHT? Sideways candy cane swish. Cracking wrist. But she could do this.

"Henshu," she said slowly, ending the flick part of the candy cane at her feet. She tried moving her foot front and found it immensely difficult, even if it wasn't impossible.

...

That was progress, yeah?

No? Aw. Pity. Maybe some other time.

Alice tried to clear her thoughts of explosions and the searing pain in her knee as she focused on Romanos' words. This definitely wasn't as cool as blasting off feet, but she could deal. Bending down a little to scrawl down a couple more notes on the spell, and nearly crying out at the way her knee bent when she did, the seventh year moved on to practicing the incantation.

Henshu. Hen-shu. "Henshu."

Fairly easy, yeah? Movement next.

West experimentally moved the charmed foot again and found he could move it but it didn't slide all over the place. So that meant it worked? His other foot was having trouble keeping purchase on the slide-y floor. He sat and did the candy cane movement with his wand.

"Henshu."

So... in theory both feet would be stable on the slippery floor yeah?

......... why were they learning charms again?

lemon 01-30-2014 06:49 AM

Merlin forbid she ever experience this kind of agony again, because her knee. Alice made a couple of pitiful faces at nothing in particular, and then silently cursed more sons of garden gnomes when she dropped her wand. How... how was she meant to bend over again and.... reach.... stretch.....

Yes! Wand. And all it cost her was a cracking back and more pain in her leg. Lovely.

This spell was rather dumb, she decided. All it encouraged was running away and being a coward, so Alice wasn't putting too much effort into it anyway. But she was attempting to distract herself from her knee pain with practicing the movement for the spell, putting as much effort into the sideways candy cane as she could muster. Twist and a horizontal flick. Twist and a horizontal flick.

They were learning how to stick their feet to the floor? Michael didn't get it. Especially not after they had just been discussing an apparently very smart and very fast demon. But he did not wish to do anymore theory so he picked up his wand and began practicing the movement.

Like a sideways candy cane.

The movement was awkward and it took him a dozen tries to before he had it down pat. And then he sounded out the incantation.

"Henshu." It sounded so weird.

Michael was just about to try the spell on his shoe when he noticed Little Bunny a little away from him and she seemed to be doing a pretty good job. So he moved over to her and tapped her gently on the shoulder. "Hey can you show me how you did that?"

lemon 01-30-2014 07:49 AM

She practiced the twist and horizontal flick in the air a few more times before trying to slide across the floor. The pain in her knee was starting to subside- it came and went- so it wasn't too hard to move. Alice could easily tell how slippery the floor was, in case she'd forgotten what it had been like entering class, but this spell was going to change that. Or it would if she performed it right.

"Henshu." Sideways candy cane. Her wand had been directed at one of her shoes but it didn't seem to be any different on its own, so Alice cast on her other foot as well. "Henshu." After the second spell was done, she tried moving again, and the traction was clearly evident.

Not that this spell was helpful or anything, considering all that it helped with was running away. And sticking you to the floor so you couldn't escape and died.

But at least she could do it.

Hey Ju 01-30-2014 01:29 PM

Noooow they were talking!! WOOOO!! New spell! And even better, a CHARM spell! WooooooooooooOOOOOooooOOOOOoooooOOOOoooooo!!!

Happy Sophie was oh so very happy! EEEEEEEEE!!

Right, spell time. "Henshu!" WOOP! Easy enough!

The seventh year pulled out her wand with a bright smile on her face and did the movement. Twist and horizontal flick. Nice! It felt alright as well. Twist and horizontal flick!

Flick! ...Sophie didn't know why she had done that for. Maybe she was just way too happy now.

She tried to concentrate. "Henshu." Her tone was now more focused. "Henshu." And she tried the wand movement again.

KAY! She was READY!

"Henshu!" Twist and horizontal flick. Sophie almost tapped her shoe with her wand. Gah! For some reason this spell reminded her of the Gripping Charm and she actually almost performed the latter. FOCUS, Sophie! "Henshu." Twist and horizontal flick at her other shoe. Without the almost-tapping motion this time.

.........Did it work?

The Hufflepuff got up, not as slowly as she should, and was able to stand up alright, without slipping or tripping or sliding away on the floor. OhWOOOOOO!!!! Charms! Super effective!

WOOP!

TakemetotheBurrow 01-30-2014 01:40 PM

Running away from something fast was their best defense? That was reassuring.

... ...Not.

Ella wasn't going to question it, though. Especially since she'd never even heard of this creature before today. Romanos was the expert in the room and so she was going to give her instructions her full attention. Henshu. Easy enough to say. It wasn't something she'd used before but with the image of a candy cane in her head and thoughts of Sir Treyen and Miss Ellie, Ella was ready to practice.

"Henshu...Henshu...Henshu..."

Now for the wand movement.

Twist and a horizontal flick. Twist and a horizontal flick.

Okay, she could do this. Maybe.

Poolicious 01-30-2014 01:58 PM

Spell time.

Henshu. It sounds like Ah chew to him. "Focus Messer, its Henshu not Ah Chew." He mumbled. He repeated that incantation several times in his head before he was sure that he got it.

"Henshu. Henshu. Henshu." Sounds good enough.

Now, the wand movement. The Professor said its like candy cane. He pictured a candy cane in his head. Yum. Candy cane sound delicious. Gah. Focus! He did the movement with his wand. Twist and a horizontal flick. He could do this! As long as he's not losing his focus. YEP!

Edward Penguin 01-30-2014 02:14 PM

Ian had carefully tried to watch and listen to all that was going on. The professor had said that leg-locking wasn't the way to go so they were going for a traction spell. Seems like an awful lot of work to go about for what she said was a rather fast creature. He still thought apparating was the way to go, but he would try and do what she instructed.

Hen-SHU!...HEN-shu....HEN-SHU!...hen-shu....Hen-SHU! Ian worked one the pronunciation a few more times before working the wand movement. [i]Twist and horizontal...twist and horizontal[/b] Then he raised his hand. Does it matter which direction we twist and go horizontally? He didn't want to perform a different spell when he should be gaining traction. Maybe this spell would help him to walk better.

TakemetotheBurrow 01-30-2014 02:24 PM

Time to direct this spell at her shoes.

Ella was having some trouble with this as bending or twisting in any way sent pain shooting up her back but she bit down on her lip, ignoring it as best she could. She still wanted to ask Botros to borrow one of his canes, honestly. Or at least duplicate it. The only problem would be how much attention this would attract and she doubted Kaiden would let her play if she was hobbling around on some hunk of wood so yeah, no cane. She'd stomach the pain. RAW-owie.

Ahem.

Wand trained on her left shoe, the blonde focused her mind and said clearly, "Henshu." Then with a sideways candy cane-esque motion, she was ready. Scuff. Scuff. Scuff. Seemed like added traction to her.

Moving on.

Right shoe was the object of the spell this time around. "Henshu." Twist and hoizontal flick. Scuff. Scuff. Scuff.

Lady of Light 01-30-2014 02:28 PM

.... A spell for RUNNING AWAY? How was that a good way to defend yourself? Meh. This class just kept getting worse. Delilah sighed. She might as well go ahead with the practicing the spell, yeah? At least, she'd be learning something new. It was better way to look at the situation.

"Henshu. Henshu. Henshu." Delilah repeated it a few times, making sure she got the pronounciation right. Now, moving on to the wand movement. Twist and horizontal flick. Yeah. She practiced it a couple more times and nodded to herself.

Now, she was ready.

DaniDiNardo 01-30-2014 02:33 PM

With one shoe operational in the better grip for running thing it was time to get the next. Surely grip wouldn't be the only thing saving you in situations but it did help some. Imagine casting but slipping while you do and missing. Missing was the difference between living and dying. This was why she was so happy her aim was that good. Hardly ever missed. This no slipping would increase that.

Alexa stuck out her left foot, feeling some amount of protest in her knees. Merlin, joints that weren't stiff, they helped with running too. Definitely.

"Henshu!" Twist and horizontal flick.

How did her shoes feel now against the floor you may ask. The exact same...as each other, which meant the spell probably worked just fine. Either that of the other one had worn off because of poor casting? PFFFT, she'd go with the first thank you very much.

Lex ran her feet along the ground. She would have opted for a small jog but yeah...knees were saying no and who was she to argue with them?

Delilah took a deep breath before bending down slightly and pointing her wand at her right shoe. Okay. Let's hope she got this right.

"Henshu." Delilah said loudly with the required wand movement. And... she wasn't sure if it worked. The girl took a couple of steps and yeah, no. It hadn't worked. The floor was still slippery. Time to try again.

The girl pointed her wand at her right shoe again before muttering the spell. She repeated the spell and the wand movement for her left shoe as well.. because why not? She was a little tired from bending down for so long... when it had only been two minutes. Odd.

Anyway. She slowly took a few steps to the right and... HEY! She didn't feel like she was going to fall down anymore. That meant the spell worked, yeah? Awesome.

"Thank you miss.." he said while blushing… she was really nice to him.. he made a mental note to stop by her office later to thank her.

"Sure thing Professor Romanos" he took out his wand and swished it like she described a swish and flick but in a sideways candy cane motion.. "Like that?" he said while smiling.. erggg these wrinkles on his hand were bothering him but he didn't want to cry anymore so that was good…..right

"Im going to try it all together" he said confidently

Swish and flick and "Henshu" now the finial test to see if he can slid across the floor..

Here he went and slide…… slide…. the last one he tried a little too much and he managed to bend over awkwardly. A little pain and a little "ouch" but all in all he was okay… he stood up "it worked!" he said happily and then he ended the spell with "Finite" and he was able to move again.

Brynn would have to admit that this could be a neat spell as she glanced around at some of her classmates beginning to skate around the slippery floor as a result of the charm. She would if she wasn't in such a bad mood, not feeling like being in class at all. But as it were, she was in class and apparently expected to conduct herself as such.

The redhead first looked at her drawn wand then down at her feet, supposing she should get to practicing, especially since she never did get spells right on her first try being relatively new to casting them herself. Practicing the wand movement and incantation first would probably be more helpful. "Henshu," she said quietly to herself before drawing out the syllables to wrap her mouth around the foreign sounding word. "Hennn- shooo." Easy enough even if it did sound weird. The a twist and flick like a horizontal candy cane. Brynn moved her wand in the same manner she saw the professor minutes ago, trying that a few times before proceeding.

Now for real. Brynn did the horizontal candy cane movement, aiming at her left foot, as she said, "Henshu." Then she repeated the actions at her right shoe. Tentatively she moved her right foot forward to test it out. It didn't feel any different. She took a bigger step with her left foot, noting no difference there either. Of course not, she thought grumpily, scowling at her feet. Why couldn't anything be easy?

Poolicious 01-30-2014 04:55 PM

Now its time to try this spell.

He need to bend over so he could cast this spell. And bending over was the last thing he wanted to do today but he didn't want to slip either. So bending over its. Messer pointed his wand at his right shoe. "Henshu!" Twist and horizontal flick. And he repeated the spell and the wand movement at his left shoe.

The Hufflepuff tried to move his legs but he can't. The spell worked. Cool!

hermionesclone 01-30-2014 05:32 PM

A spell that was a mixture of the stickfast hex and the gripping charm? ... He... hadn't heard of that before.

The boy leant over and make a quick note of the spell onto his piece of parchment. NEWTs, you know. And the possibility that he'll end up facing something like the Chort in the future. He really hoped he wouldn't ever bump into a creature like that. Just... no. Another big no was making them face a creature like this for their exam. Maybe something else.

There. He was done. Now he was just going to stand up pro--

... Wobble! Whoa.

... Right Slippery floor. He was just going to try his hardest to stand on this spot right here, yeah? Awesome. He'll just stand there and practice the spell for now. "Henshu... Henshu... Henshu... Hen... shu..." Was that right? "Henshu... Henshu!"

The idea of the wand movement being a sideways candy cane made it a lot easier to remember. It also made the boy crave some hot chocolate. Twist and horizontal flick. Twist... and horizontal flick. Slow wand movement was practised slowly. Twiiiiist and a horizontal flick.

There. Now he was ready.

Daydreamer11 01-30-2014 06:01 PM

OK, time to practice. Alex stood up slowly and carefully trying to give her aching joints time to wake up. She decided to practice her incantation and wand movements separately at first. "Hen-shu, Hen-shu", she repeated slowly. At least the incantation part was pretty easy this time. Next she tried the wand movements giving the wand a candy cane-like twist and horizontal flick.

Now it was time to combine the two. Alex took a moment to gather her thoughts. Then she directed her wand toward her shoe. Repeating her twist and horizontal fick, she added the incantation. Saying"Henshu", Alex looked down at her feet preparing to test her work. She tried to slide her foot a bit and found that she indeed did have some extra traction.

Happy with her partial success, Alex prepared her wand, pointing it at her other shoe. She then repeated the spell, duplicating her wand movements and incantation. Having addressed both feet, Alex attempted to take several gliding steps. She was unable to skate, as both feet did more skidding than gliding. Satisfied with her result, Alex said, "Finite", ending the spell. She paused before attempting to practice the spell a second time.

hermionesclone 01-30-2014 06:40 PM

Time to try the spell? ... Erm...

Alec glanced down at his feet that he had been trying so hard not to move. Sure, this was useful and everything and he knew that he would need it in the future but... the testing part? The boy didn't really want to slip and fall flat on his bottom in front of everyone. Just... yeah. No.

Shaking his head, he held up his wand and took a deep breath. Try. And if he fell... he fell. And would walk out feeling more embarrassed than ever. More embarrassed than that time he wore a giant badger costume in the stands. Or that time when he'd commented on the texture of someone's skin instead of calling them smart. ... CRINGE.

... Spell. Henshu... Henshu... Twist and horizontal flick. He practised the wand movement over a couple of times before taking another deep breath. Right. Ready, he was. "Henshu!" Twist and horizontal flick!

...

... Now was the moment of truth.

He glanced down at his right shoe and paused. If it had worked, there was meant to be more friction, right? Maybe even cause him to get stuck on the same spot. More cringing took place when he remembered back to his last skating adventure. And to think Skates had told him to try a roller blade and a roller skate at the same time.

Slooooowly, he tried to edge his right foot forward, almost expecting the surface to feel slippery again. But... no? No. Not as slippery has his left foot, which he then tried to use to slide forward -- for comparison, you know -- only to...

... wobble on one foot. The right one.

Right. Placing the left foot down again, he aimed his wand over at it instead. "Henshu!" Twist and horizontal flick! The left foot was slid forwards and...

... friction? He thought so!

Did he have to use Finite on his feet?

FearlessLeader19 01-30-2014 06:48 PM

Adi tested out his feet by lifting them one at a time off off the ground. It was honestly no surprise that the spell hadn't worked on his first attempt. He had sort of gotten used to the fact that he had to give spells a few shots before he got them right.

And he was going to try again! "Henshu!'' A twist and a flick with the wand. Would it work? Eagerly, Adi tested his feet again. They lifted off of the ground with ease so no. It didn't work. Ah Well. He'd just have to try again.

Tessa looked up from her shoe, which seemed to be doing just fine on the normal floor, as the Professor spoke. Okay, time for the real test. She still only had the spell on one shoe, so one was the normal which would allow her to gauge the efficiency of the spell better.

She look one step on the slippery surface and her right foot almost slid right out from underneath her. However, her left foot remained steady. "Not bad," she said, and then tried moving her foot. It remained quite stubbornly in place. Frowning, she ended the spell. "Okay, try that again," she murmured, this time aiming for her right shoe.

Once cast, she stepped out onto the floor again. This time, she was able to move the spelled shoe and it didn't slip either. Her left food, however, was doing all it could to remain where it was. She spelled them both and took a breath. She moved a little quicker across the floor- with no slips! "Yes!" she exclaimed, grinning down at her feet.

Question! She heard it. Along with seeing the raised hand. "Not particularly." she said, unconsciously twirling her wand in her hand. "Granted, right handed people vould vont to create the flick going left and lefthanded people vould vont to flick to the right, but either vay vorks fine. Votever you're comfortable vith."

Bays smiled as the Professor was being so nice and even giving him tips… okay loosen the wrist Bay loosen the wrist… for the next couple of minutes Bay would be practicing his movements. "Thanks Professor" he said while shaking his wrist out to make it all loosey goosey.

twist and flick….twist and flick.. Bay just kept on practicing.

Ian was grateful for the answer from the professor and felt more confident now to give a go at the spell. Using his left hand, he pointed at his right foot and spoke the words while making the sideways candy cane motion with his wand Hen-SHU! He attempted to move his foot, but it seemed that perhaps nothing had happened as he was able to shuffle his foot forward without any less difficulty than he had upon entering the room earlier. He tried it again...and again, it wasn't working quite well. He was still pushing his foot forward with little resistance from the floor or his foot (other than the pain that continued in his right hip.

Perhaps I need to do the spell with my wand in my right hand. He'd never thought about being able to do spells with only one hand. That might be a problem if he was stuck with this cane forever. He gingerly set the cane against the seat and switched wand hands. With a steadying left hand, he tried again Hen-SHU! He attempted to move his foot again and was pleased that there was a measure of friction this time, but he felt the pain shoot into his foot when he moved.

WhittyBitty 01-30-2014 07:24 PM

Listening to the Professor's next instructions, Lux tried to skate on the floor. Clearly the determination she had to get this right had paid off, because she was unable to slide at all, her feet were really stuck to the ground. Using the Finite spell, she quickly reversed it.

Bazinga 01-30-2014 08:37 PM

Bart was of course disappointed there was no blowing up like Alice had mentioned or toenail growing, because honestly that would be gross and cool and fun to learn. What he could do with a spell like that. He started to visualize people's toenails ripping out of their shoes when he heard the professor, "Bless you" That's when he realized she wasn't sneezing at all.

Oh that was the spell they were using. Oops well whatever. He watched as the others started since clearly his mind was on toenails growing and he started to practice. Henshu, Henshu, Henshu.. That word was funny and he said it out loud acting as if it were a sneeze Heenshuuu, hehehe that was just funny.

Pulling out his wand he did a twist and flicked vertically, "Henshu" nothing... hmmm twist and flick vertically, "Henshu"

Slide.. slide...

No that couldn't be right something was wrong. He wasn't of course, maybe he had the wrong shoes. Yes that probably was it, but he'd try again twist and flick vertically, "Henshu"

Slide.. slide.. frown

TakemetotheBurrow 01-30-2014 09:04 PM

Skating was impossible now that Ella had used the spell on her shoes which was good, yeah? Meant her spell had worked properly. She also lifted her feet off the floor and was pleased to find that they weren't stuck either. Success! Did this mean she could sit still for a bit until they moved on?

What would they be doing next, anyway? Curious badger was curious.

Edward Penguin 01-30-2014 09:14 PM

Now that Ian seemed to have done the right foot correctly, he tried again with his left. He spoke the words, Henshu! and candy cane swished his wand to point to the left food. He went to pick up his left food. It didn't seem to work though and since his right foot was experiencing friction and his left was not, there was some slipping. His feet began to separate and he tried to catch himself before he fell to the floor. He panicked a little and as he reached for the desk, his left food kept going and soon his legs were wide apart as he found himself on the ground in some measure of pain. He just kind of sat there, grimacing and waiting for the pain to subside.

Holmesian Feline 01-30-2014 09:37 PM

They were given a few more minutes and after he had been practicing both the wand movement and the incantation for a time, Ben figured he might as well actually put the two in the same move. To see if he could cast it on his shoes, successfully or not. Theory was one thing, be able to actually do what was being described was another and his classmates seemed to be having enough luck with it. He slipped his wand from where it was kept, the second year working the movements out with it in his grasp before preparing to finally try it out all together. His gaze down by his feet where his targetted magic needed to be aimed at.

"Henshu!" he cast with a twist and a horizontal flick. Benjamin then bent his leg with a groan and rubbed the bottom of his shoe against the floor. The action allowing him to feel just a bit more reaction between sole and stone. Was that what it was supposed to be like?

Rosa Chispa Princessa 01-30-2014 09:51 PM

Really, there is a better spell for a demon then tying it up, making it immobile or making it move like crazy. Oichi could not wait to hear this but the professor seems to be keeping a secret for now, awe why? Soon the lesson progressed and they were now learning a new spell and in no time it was time to practice. Cool, a spell to help keep you're feet steady on any surface. That certainly explains why the floor was slippery earlier. Though I do wish the professor would have warned us. Oh, well, time to practice a brand new spell Oichi slowly got her old body up and pointed her wand at her shoes and with a vertical twist and flick said, "henshu", she then attempted to slide like on skates and then tried to stop. No go, she spiraled an and then fell to the ground with a thud and felt her now old bones creak. But she did not say a word as she she slowly got herself up. Man this old body is hard to work with but I gotta do it. And I know I can get this, I just need to keep trying. And perhaps the spiral I did means I'm off to a start.

FearlessLeader19 01-30-2014 09:52 PM

A few more minutes Professor Romanos said? Where did the time go? Adi really wanted to get this right at least once before he left. Hastily he concentrated once more on his shoes. "Henshu!'' Cue the twist and horizontal flick. He tested his feet. Nope Still it didn't work. "Henshu!'' He repeated the wand movement. Still nothing.

Okay. Another try. "Henshu!'' Twist and a horizontal flick. Adi tested his feet again. His feet were unable to slide this time. Yes! Finally! He got the spell to work.

The one time she'd gotten a spell in the first try, and that actually worked, seemed to have worked TOO well. She was stuck. Like, her feet couldn't dislodge themselves from the floor, and the more she moved, the more she wobbled in her posture.

SIGH. These things only happened to her. WHY?

Then she was being tapped on the shoulder. If it wasn't for her predicament she would have taken a step back. As it was she was STUCK. She almost lost balance, but she quickly reached out and grabbed Train Boy's arm. She'd recognized his voice. Maybe it wasn't such a bad day.

"Hi...sorry." She let go off him and grinned with a nod. "All you do is a twist and horizontal flick with your wand." She demonstrated while trying to keep her balance. "Now, when you say the incantation, you want your words and intent to be clear." Or he'd end up with no sticky feet. Or no boat in her case. Transfiguration practice had been terrible.

Beverly gazed at him expectantly as if saying, Go on, try it.

Vesper was pleased they were moving around...and more so because she didn't have the urges to nastily side-eye Alice. So, yay!

Instead, she was practicing this charm they'd just been taught. Yes. A CHARM. Not that Ves cared nearly as much as her peers did about how it sounded. Really, a charm was a charm. Surely not all magical spells had to sound one particular way. That'd make them boring, right?

For now, she was simply practicing saying it and twisting her wand around in (hopefully) the right motion. It was a funny little spell...Henshu!...that sounded distinctly Japanese...because Vesper knew about Japanese things. Mainly through her video games and Manga comics. "Henshu." It was sorta fun to say out loud, too. Kinda like...Henshin!

Mhm, she'd skip dinner tonight and read some comics. It'd been a few weeks.

Still plopped down on the floor, though, Vesper pointed her wand at her feet. This was probably why Charms just worked better for her...Her "intention" was pretty great. At least it wasn't having to picture something turning into another something. She....just couldn't understand that. It didn't resonate. "Henshu. Henshu. Henshu. Henshu." Yep she was repeating it...and continuously practicing the motion...while pointing her wand at her feet.

Surely one of those...took.

Standing, she took a few steps and noticed that she felt more stable than before. Did that mean it worked? The slick floors didn't seem to effect her walking...

"Up ve go, Mister Tinker." With a flick of her wand, the second year was slowly pulled upward, as if something was tugging on the collar of his robes. Certainly going about the wrong way to stretch one's limbs. "Keep trying."

And those few minutes were up. "Alright, everyone." Pause the magic stuffs! Hmkay? "If you feel comfortable vith your performance vith this spell, and are not sliding any longer, you may continue on vith our next practice. Ligatenous. This spell is similar to that of Incarcerous, however, instead of conjuring ropes to bind your target, you'll be conjuring chains. It's a simple point of your vand to your intended target. Vot I vont you to do...is to aim for either one of the target dummies to the back of the arena, or at the vall. Not at one another, alright?"

GOOD? She would be watching!

"Unless there are no questions, go on ahead and practice."

Bay stopped practicing his twist and flick to listen to what they were doing next… Conuring Chains, mega cool.. but with his health he hoped these chains weren't going to be too heavy.

He moved over towards his dummy and said "Ligaten--is" he saw two pieces of chain linked together hit his dummy.. ohhh no…. Bay kept thinking of the word to say in his head.. "Ligatenous. Ligatenous"

Giving it a try again he said with more confidence. "Ligatenous" and the chain wrapped around the dummy. "cool" Bay managed to spit out… today was turning out to be better but oh man he wanted to have that nap so badly.
