sitting next to LEXAlicious Sarah bounced into the greenhouse having paid already. Those turnstiles would make her late. She should build her own greenhouse to use this year... she could look it up in the library how- oh dear.. she had to pay for the library as well, and she had already gone that week. She would add it to her book list for next week. Sarah paused and took a sniff. She missed the smell of vegetation that she had at the farm, "Hello Professor, How is your baby professor? Can you bring him with to class sometime? Or if you ever need a babysitter, I would love to." Sarah said. She waved and smiled and various people before plomping down at a table next to Alexa. "Hey you!" Sarah grinned, "hope you don't mind my company". Sarah reached into her satchel and took out her things. |
Nerida walked into the greenhouse having paid already. Those turnstiles would make her broke... Sigh it was bad enough she had to pay to go the library her favorite place in the whole school! "Hello Professor Bentley, How is your baby?? Is it wonderful?" Nerida asked as she saw the Professor. Seeing a opentable near the front she plopped down and smiled she loved Herbology. |
Payment paid, Benjamin's mood had been soured a little. Not for long though, as his lips soon curled upwards at the sight of the greenhouse. "Hi Professor," he greeted with a smile. It was only now he noticed the desks. Since when did they have circular desks in Herbology? Weird. With a shrug, he headed towards the one where Lex was already sat. "'lright?" he asked the Gryffindor casually. "Did y'know about the turnstile?" Just out of interest? |
Bemoaning her pitifully short, and apparently destined to be permanent at this rate, eyelashes, Fern didn't really feel likes saying hello to the professor. But she did, because that was what you were supposed to do. "Hello, professor." Then she went and took a seat next to Kace because he was a Hufflepuff, and looked a little grudgingly at the potted plant. Was that thing really more important than the state of her cosmetic upkeep? |
SPOILER!!: General helllooooo's As students started entering, Seren took a break from her plant stroking and love smothering and checked the names off her attendance list... though she still managed to fit in a stroke here and there between tasks and greetings. "Hello," she'd reply on occasion as the less chatty students took their seats. Her other responses included, "Yes, but everyday is a nice day," and "It's definitely good to be back, it's so nice to see you all again." Then of course, there were the chatty ones. Blesss. They were just too cute sometimes. SPOILER!!: Chatty peeps Goooood. It was time to start the lesson. Seren finished checking off names from the attendance list and placed them on the spare stool beside her. "Welcome everybody, to the first Herbology lesson of the term. For those of you who are not familiar with Hogwarts, or myself, please ensure that you are familiar with all greenhouse rules, wear your gloves at all times when working with plants and please do not consume food in the greenhouses unless otherwise instructed." Otherwise they might find vines around their legs and whatnot. Mmhhmm. "Now, for the benefit of our first years and for anyone who may still be uncertain, what is involved in the study of herbology?" OOC: The lesson has officially begun. As a result of the turnstiles thing, we will accept late arrivals for this lesson only. Please post ONE idea in response to the question only. The lesson will continue in approx 12 hours. |
The turnstiles would be there even sometime later?? Her mouth fell open but before she could give a proper response she heard Sarah just behind her. Lex whipped around and spotted her fellow Gryffindor taking a spot at the table she was at. "Oh! No problem! I don't mind at all!" BEAM! Really, anyone was free to sit where she sat. There wasn't exactly a rule about it. She turned her attention back to the Professor who been talking about a surprize. She liked those. Lex liked even more the bright greeting she'd gotten from the Professor in turn. Her Head of House was easily one of her favourites, simply because the woman genuinely seemed happy when she saw her. Now if only the others could adopt that attitude. The next person to sit by her was Benjy, he got a smile that slowly faded into a look of contemplation when he asked about the turnstiles. "No actually, I didn't. Luckily I always have some loose change on me." But all her attention was soon back to the Professor. What did Herbology involve? Lots of things! Lex's hand flew up. "We study man eating plants...and mundane plants too..." Okay, so they'd never actually learned about anything man-eating but technically her first year was a learning experience filled with a giant man-eating plant. She learned so much that year. |
Text Cut: Bentley Aw. Sophie DID feel welcome to Herbology, thanks. This woman professor was already a million times better than that scary Transfiguration lady AND Romanos. Sophie was delighted to be near the front of the room this time. Right. Down to business. Gloves, check. No eating? Well, she might have had some sweets in her pockets, but she'd make sure not to take those out, yeah? As for the professor's question... Sophie was a first year, but even SHE knew a few obvious answers. She could answer, too, then, right? But, as she was looking to get on Bentley's good side from the beginning, the first year raised a lazy hand and took advantage of the wording of her question to give a less plant-related reply, "Fun?" That would either be a hit or miss answer, but from Bentley's friendliness at the beginning, Soph thought it would be a winner. |
Well, it was pretty nice being back in the Greenhouses. He surely felt like he didn't spend enough time in here throughout his Hogwarts years. Luckily he was also aware on the rules for this class, he had his own gloves in his pocket ready to be worn whenever needed. Hmm.. The study of herbology. Well, that were a lot involved for the studying in Herbology. Wade raised his hand to give an answer, "Herbology involves.. more than just learning what the plants are, but also on treating them." Least that was the basic of it in Wade's eyes. |
Oh, this woman was nice! "Thanks, Professor! I'm quite excited to be here,'' Adi said, bouncing slightly on his feet. He could hardly wait to get started! Better head to a seat! And soon, the lesson had started! Adi had his quill poised, ready to take notes. Quote:

Great class had already started. Marissa walked into the greenhouse and quietly found a seat. She listened as the professor asked a question about what is involved in herbology. "Is it so we can learn about plants and how we can benefit from them? For like medicine and stuff?" she asked as she raised her hand. |
Minerva got settled in at her workstation and turned to fully face the professor. She was very aware of how nice it smelled in the greenhouse and how calm she was feeling at the moment. She hated her plant loving boyfriend not being next to her, but at least she wasn't screaming back to the castle to roll up in her little protective ball away from plants like she was last term. Well she was calm that is until Alexa answered Bentley's first question. Her blue eyes snapped up at the lion and she gasped at the man eating plants. Knowing they were not in the right greenhouse for that, Finally composing herself Min raised her hand, "Professor, Herbology is the study of plants, but also how to care for them and what they are used for." A big reason she was still in the class. She needed the what they are used for part for her healing career that she was wanting. |
Getting your hands dirty, of course. It seemed like a straight-foward question, but as he listened to the answers given by the other students, Cutty realized Professor Bentley might have been the sort of teacher who was looking for a specific answer. Of the sort the Hufflepuffs were giving. Best to hang back and observe. |
Adrienne still didn't want to be here. Really. All of these carnivorous plants were making her twitchy, so even the fairly quiet sound of the attendance clipboard being put down on the stool made her tense up. "The study of magical plants and their care and uses." That was a really simple question, and any first year who'd even given One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi a cursory glance could have regurgitated that definition, along with the four or so people who'd said it before her. Oh well. |
Nigel did not know you could not eat in here. He just assumed in was common sense. You don't want to make man eating plants more hungry. "It is the wizarding equivalent to botany" If you did not know what botany was. Then this was the class for you. |
Text Cut: Addi! She sat shooting looks at all the plants around her expecting anyone of them to leap at her and EAT her or something. She needed to remain ready for any surprises. So when Adelaide sat next to her and spoke, the blond was startled for a split second before recognizing her dormmates voice. "Hey," She smiled at her. She however had no chance to answer her question as the professor spoke, so she turned her attention to the woman avoiding herself and her friend trouble. Text Cut: Professor! Here they were. Cassia was still clutching her bag in case there was an emergency and they had to flee. Could happen any second here, yeah? Nope, she wasn't being paranoid or overreacting at all. Better safe than sorry. And did she just tell Lex that it was a surprise. Was that supposed to be exciting? Cassia didn't appreciate surprises in here. She'd rather have a general idea of what was happening and what was going to happen. Kind of on edge. Okay, questions were good, they were very good. The longer they stayed in the theoretical part the better and safer. She raised her hand. "Learning how to keep away from the deadly and poisonous plants." At least that's why she was here. |
For the benefit of the first years?! Hmm... Sophie didn't know about the other first years...well, other than her brother..., but she'd been homeschooled before coming here, just like all the other Greingoth descendants before her. Her mom had pretty much brushed her up on the basics, so she did know a little about Herbology before coming to class. Raising her hand, she said, "My mom and grandma are both potions mistresses, and they use lots of plants as ingredients in potions." |
SPOILER!!: professor and cassia Adelaide smiled at Cassia and quirked an eyebrow at her jumpiness. She waited for her to answer, but the other girl never got the chance. No point in breaking the rules and apparently Cassia had the same idea. Okay. Rules down. Check. What is involved with Herbology? Keep from having deadly things? Way to make me feel any better about this class, Cassia. Everyone else seemed to be mentioning some useful things as well. So Herbology definitely had it's benefits. She raised her hand. "To learn about the good and bad things plants can do?" A legitimate conclusion from her classmates answers. |
Kace liked starting off the lesson easy. This was an easy question and it was common sense to use your gloves and to not eat while in Herbology. Why do you think he always comes out of this class super hungry?? Anyways back to the question. Hmmm.."Well professor Herbology teaches us which plants to take care of correctly because if you don't there could be consequences or it could die." Which is somewhat true because every plant is different. |
SPOILER!!: Responses Seren listened as a number of students raised their hand and contributed an answer to her question. It was nice to see variations in their responses too, and neither were wrong. After mumbling the appropriate "Yes, excellent!" and "Absolutely!" 's Seren clapped her hands together and paused to see if there were any last minute ideas anyone wanted to add... No? ... "Herbology, in official terms, is the study of magical and mundane plants... this is a very broad statement though, and it doesn't represent the subject justly." She paused here to give the students the opportunity to consider what she'd just said. "Herbology... may be broken into four categories, which your peers have identified. These include the identification of plants, their uses, their cautions and their care requirements." All of which were necessary for a truly apt understanding of the subject. "Marissa and Sophie touched on herbology in the field of medicine and potions... how else might we use the knowledge of herbology in our world today?" OOC: The lesson will continue in approx 15 hours. Remember, only ONE idea/thought in your response please. |
Ohh, Sophie was mentioned by name! For an eleven-year-old, this was something big! Especially for her first Herbology class. She gave the professor a grin before settling back and listening to the lesson. Hmm...another way to use Herbology besides medicine and potion? Sophie couldn't really think of anymore uses. Well, you could decorate with plants, but she wasn't really sure that was what the professor was getting at. Then a thought occurred to her, and she raised her hand. "We can use our knowledge of Herbology to keep us from getting attacked by a plant," she said. "If you didn't know what a Devil's Snare was, and you came across one, you'd be toast." |
SPOILER!!: Hera1 There was so much that Sarah did not know where to begin. Of course, she was only allowed to say one thing, so she had to pick one carefully. She thought and thought and by the time she decided on the perfect one... everyone else had covered for her. SPOILER!!: prof 2 Sarah was taking notes this year.. she had to get off to a good start. Leaving a page in her notebook as a cover page and another as index that she would do at the end of the year, Sarah moved onto the next clean page and began writing. There was a lot of things going on. Right.. another question. This time Sarah was not going to overthink it, she was going to say the first thing that came to mind. She raised her hand. "One needs a knowledge of Herbology for Wandlore. Children these days" yes, she was old "need to know that the wand does not come from Ollivanders, rather the wood comes for a tree." |
Ears all open and listening, Abbi made sure to pay attention. It was difficult though and that was clearly because she found it all very interesting which could have possibly been because this was all new to her, or maybe it was the fact that she couldn't stop wondering if fairies were somehow involved in this subject. They had to be! Awesome things almost ALWAYS involved fairies. Buuuuut back to Herbology. Miss Pretty Blonde Professor was going on about the four different categories Herbology was divided into. Their care requirements, the little firstie scratched her head at that one. Did that involve fairies looking after them? She'd have to ask! Maybe at the end of the lesson, cause again the fairy side-tracking thing was not good when Professor's were asking questions. Nope, nope. You needed to think about what they were saying, not about what was in your mind just yet. So herbology had to do with plants and why did people learn about plants. Abbi shot her hand up in a speedy fashion. "I know! I know!" Nothing wrong with being a bit too eager, right? "To know how to make beautiful fairy smelling perfumes!" Yeah, she was somehow still going on about that. |
Condsidering Lex could think of a few ways in which Herbology could be useful in today's world, she raised her hand, prepared to give an answer. Medicine and stuff was already mentioned, those were the practical things...but not the only practical ones. "It'd be good to know stuff about Herbology because it can help you get rid of evidence and take care of the...erm....problems in your life. Some plants eat people, it's important to note those because they can come in handy one day. Other plants just have reeeally unique things about them that can be harnessed but you'll never know that or which ones until you've actually learned about them." Did that make sense? It's how she saw it. If the plant wasn't gonna out the guy for you, the least it could do is give you something else to do the job. Then you had to watch for the plants that were simply pretty. They were wonderful to have around but not very beneficial in the end. |

Oh. How about... caring for plants? Because you see plants everyday in your life. At home, in Hogwarts, pretty much everywhere. There were even plants in dry places like deserts. They took that up a few terms back so Kat had a bit of knowledge on that. It was useful. "Mainly to care for the plants, especially those who have them in their homes. It's important to know which soil is suitable for them and what other things you must consider when growing them." Like brushing the teeth of Fanged Geraniums. Merlin, that was messy work. Definitely messy. |
How could they use Herbology? ... Well, THAT was an awfully good question. Benzi had been in this lesson for a total of, what, five minutes? and it was already boring. Uncle Jake had told him it had been Mummy's least favourite subject and now the eleven year old understood why. "We can use plants in food and tea, to make them taste better and to know which ones are good for you and which ones will kill you," he said, one hand raised and the other supporting his head. He swallowed a yawn, and blinked rapidly as his eyes watered. It had been decided - Herbology and mornings don't mix. At all. |
