MEEEEEP! She was pretty. Yes, yes. Their new Divination Professor. And she was not a centaur either! She cocked her head to her right as she listened to her talking about the subject. Divination, a weak subject...Psshhh. It was not. Sure, it made her sleepy sometimes, but it was also interesting especially when pretty Professors thought it. Bleeeeh. Oh, and there's a parrot whom she heard was named Galileo. Galileo was a muggle...philosopher right? N'awww. Now, she misses her cat Davinci. Having given the first question of the lesson, Beezus' head turn to and fro as she listened at her classmates individual answers. They were just..implying the same thing. ALMOST. Having a clear and open mind, getting supplies. She didn't want to repeat those answers so she rummaged her mind for another. Still halfway through composing her thoughts, she raised her hand. "Professor, errr..aside from having a clear mind and incurring your needed supplies, I think one should also have discipline." Shruuuuug. "You..you should impose yourself to not get distracted with what's occurring around you or else your concentration on your reading might break and it'll just turn out to be a failure." Yeah, that was it. |
Professor Elwood proved to be someone the young lion believed she could actually like. They very opposite of what one other Professor was. It came as a relief to find she would actually enjoy this class. It became extremely apparent when she pointed out her lack of horse parts. Yes, someone she was comfortable with. Jezzabelle raised her hand, "Well, you should be clear as well as open minded." If you believed that something wasn't possible then wouldn't you yourself make it impossible? At least, that's what she thought was true. "Also you would want to gather the items needed." Tea leaves and what-not. That was it though. She really didn't know what else to say. |

After listening carefully to everything she was telling them, Nora raised her hand to answer the question. "We must clear our heads." That was a MUST. "It also helps, or at least it helps me, if I am in a place without any distractions," like a classroom full of students. She'd rather do the readings by the lake, for example. |
Silvia was one of those who was a little skeptical about the practice of Divination, but she said to herself that she would give it a try, and she would do just that. Wait to see how things would go and then decide what she really thought of it. She raised her hand. "Professor, I too think that we first need to clear our minds and focus entirely on the divination. If we don't, other thoughts could interfere with our divining and interpretations." |

... the question might be implying something else of course but Louisa was just practical like that. |
Tay raised her hand, "Would you need to clear your mind but also block out any distractions? Maybe also study some Astronomy before you study this so you have a better understanding?" |

Of course her thinking was getting off-topic, and she quickly blinked and refocused. "I think that before doing anything, one should make sure that there are no distractions in the immediate area. Sometimes soft, natural sounds are okay, but nothing loud and obnoxious." 'Like a little sister...' Ariana wanted to say, but she refrained from doing so. It did take great willpower. "The next thing to do would be to try and clear one's mind of unnecessary thoughts and focus on the divining or reading or whatever." Kind of a lame ending, but overall Ariana was satisfied with her answer. |
Professor Elwood seemed nice enough. Ira giggled a bit as Professor mentioned that she wasn't a centaur. Of course she wasn't! *giggle* And Ira was among the majority who believed that Divination was a weak subject filled with guesswork. Yep, that as what it was. Because in her first term of Divination, Ira had spent her whole term doing guesswork in Divination. Because she honestly couldn't see any signs or symbols or anything. Maybe this term would be different? Who knows? Ira pondered over the question. The most important thing? Ira raised hr hand up and answered, "Most important things can be... focus? Concentration?" Because she remembered what Thereos had said. He had stressed on being focused, right? "Knowing what to expect to some extent could help.. and also it would be better to first read about the subject." she added. |
SPOILER!!: Professor Elwood Alyssa thought for a while and listened as the other students gave their answers, noting them down in her journal. She remembered her times spent in Divination class the last two terms and what they were all required to do before they even considered trying to do a reading. So Alyssa raised her hand and answered. "Professor, I believe that one of the most important things one needs to do before we even think about doing a reading, is to have a clear intention of what we want to know from the reading. Yes clearing one's mind from all distractions and allowing yourself to become one with nature and to be able to feel it's life force surround you is also very important. Some people think that there can be only one answer to what they see and that's because that is what they want to see. People have to keep their minds open and allow the spirits that are around us to guide us to the right answer. We have to let out intuition be our guide. " Alyssa hoped that her answer made sense. |
SPOILER!!: Responses to student answers After Professor Elwood had spoken to each student about their answers, she cleared her throat to address the class as a whole again. She straightened up and began to walk slowly across the front of the room as she spoke. "The majority of you agree that one of the most important things you should do before attempting a Divinational reading would be to clear you mind. This is a very important thing to do. Others mentioned were: limiting distractions, sleep, good meals, connecting with the Inner Eye, and a few others." Calista came to a stop and grinned at them all mischeviously. "They are however not exactly what I was looking for. If you remember my question I asked for one of the most important things to do, not necessarily the most important thing." Yep, very tricky. "And also if you were paying attention I said that we were going to explore the boundary of the true meanings of Divination and the common mistakes outsiders have on the Art." After speaking Professor Elwood removed her wand from a fold in her skirt and flicked it at what had appeared to be just a pile of junk covered by a dirty old sheet, causing the sheet to fly off, revealing a pile of four trunks. "The answer I was specifically looking for was dressing the part." She chuckled slightly. "Now I know many of you when you think of Divination you think of mind readers and fortune tellers, right? Go on, nod your heads I know it's what you thought." Yes, this was going to be really fun. "What do you think a good ‘fortune teller’ that is in contact with people should wear?" She placed a sandaled foot on one of the trunks and she twiddled her wand between one of her hands. |
It took all his not to snort when the professor said this class was actually something serious. If it wasn't for earning points, he wouldn't have been here. Though, raising his hand, he said "I try to meditate to clear my mind." HAH! Lies. Though the professor was already asking a new question. After thinking it for a moment, he raised his hand again. "They should wear something that show they are honest people." Because really, most of them were robbers, just lying and taking money. |
Ah. A trick question. Kennedy didn't like those. He liked being right so...yeah. Still, it was good. It made him think, a great way to start out the day. He pursed his lips together as the professor continued. So, they were focusing on the attire portion of Divination? The prefect tapped his chin with the feathery end of his quill in thought. After a while Kennedy raised his hand. "They should wear...good luck charms," he said, not quite finished and trying to word what he wanted to say in his head. "For example, a necklace that balances the energy around them." To have a clear mind. Like jewelry with runes on them. He was going to go with clothing, but in all honesty, he didn't know how a fortune teller dressed. Did they wear pants or shorts? Long sleeved or short sleeved shirts? He wasn't sure. |
SPOILER!!: Pirate Elwood Clearing your mind was kinda a given, Paulie thought. OR, maybe he was just smart, ya know. heh. His blue-green eyes averted to the newly revealed trunks across the classroom. Hmm. Trunks. They reminded him of treasure chests with unknown treasure. OMG, that definitely went with her whole parrot thing, too! If Paulie were any more crazy than he already was, he would have thought her a part-time pirate. Perhaps he DID think this. Pirate Elwood, not Professor Elwood. Anyway. What did fortune tellers wear? Paulie knew this. "Professor, fortune tellers wear turbans. Usually purple or magenta ones. They also like sequin cloaks, potent perfumes, and shoes with curly tips." Ahem. And maybe Paulie's love of films was playing into his response. Just a tad.. "Maybe scratch the perfumes. They don't exactly wear it, but they do burn different sorts of herbs and such." Yep. |

Then Ira looked on as Professor Elwood revealed what Ira had thought was junk. It was trunks filled with.... clothes? So.. they were all gonna wear those clothes? Ira groaned softly. They were gonna get 'dressed for the part'? Ira smiled and nodded her head a little. Yep, she really did think of those fortune tellers and mind readers at the mention of Divination. At least, that was the way in the muggle world. Still, she raised her hand to answer the question, "Professor, firstly, light and comfortable clothing is better.." Because of course, wearing corsets and tight fitting clothes would not prove to be good, as all attention would be diverted to the feelings of discomfort. She added, "I have seen fortune tellers wear COLORFUL scarves and ties and MANY MANY necklaces and rings!" Ira had never understood why they wore so much jewelry. How was Jewelry connected to Divination? Maybe they just wanted to show-off? "I wonder why..." Maybe Professor Elwood would shed some light on this? |
Zhenya knew what the fortune teller she once saw was wearing! It was a muggle fortune teller, and Zhenya left her little tent in hysterics of laughter. It was such a Joke! She raised her hand and said, "Professor I think they should wear lots of layers of clothing, and some head jewellery, like... a string of cotton with a charm on it. And they wear their hear frizzy and curly, I guess to keep other people out of their head," she said. Well, that's what THIS fortune teller she saw looked like. She had never seen other fortune tellers. On second thought, she raised her hand and said, "Professor I don't think good fortune tellers have hooves." |
Wait, 'dressing the part?' Was that really all that important? Hogwarts students were required to wear uniforms complete with robes, but they could perform spells just as well without the uniform. Why did it really matter how they dressed, unless they wanted to stand out? Nevertheless, Silvia still volunteered an answer. "I think a lot of them wear scarves, and lots of jewelry, though I don't know why they dress like that." |
Liesel nodded at the professor. She had no idea about anything in Divination and the first thing that struck her when she heard Divination was fortune tellers. But the thing that struck her most was that dressing was the most important part! Dressing, really? Well this person did teach Divination so she should know everything. She raised her hand to answer the question. "All the fortune tellers I've seen have wore a scarf like thing tied around their head and a long cloak or something very light." she actually had no idea what she was saying. |
What did fortune tellers dress like? well, there was that old coin machine thingy he had scene at a museum. He raised his hand "I guess I think they usually ware robes, but we've already got that covered. But they also wear turbans." |
Look the part? Kurumi cocked her head to the side, eyeing Selina for a moment before turning her head forward. There was a part to look? Kurumi thought for a moment about 'fortune tellers' she had seen back in Japan. The first had been Shinto priestesses who wore simple white robes with red hakama pants underneath. Simple meant less distractions and nothing to keep them from the task at hand. There were other items involved, bamboo, paper, fire, but those were a means to invoke the kami. Not part of the dress. Kurumi cocked her head to the other side, still thinking a bit deeper, and remembered some of the street 'fortune tellers' she had seen in the city when her mother had taken her shopping before....before her illness. They hadn't worn anything like what people were describing. In fact, the shady palm reader her mother had insisted visiting his stand had been in short cut jeans and a T-shirt due to the hot Japanese summer. So...Kurumi failed to see any logic in this whole dressing the part thing based on her own experience. "Professor," Kurumi said as she raised her hand. "I think that they should be comfortable in whatever they are wearing. You yourself are not wearing any sort of elaborate costume and I have never seen a Seer who did." Cue a quick look out of the corner of her eye at Selina, but it wasn't noticeable unless you were looking for it. "I guess...what I'm saying is...that they should wear whatever they want. Whatever makes them feel comfortable and confident." |

After listening to the professor speak, Nora figured out that she'll have to pay more attention to everything she was telling them. Yup, this one was a tricky one, and Nora kind of liked it. And then... she was talking about the dressing part, which had never occurred to her. She couldn't help but giggle silently when she told them to nod their heads, because... well, she was right. She told them to nod, so Nora nodded. "How about comfortable clothes?" She suggested after raising her hand. "No one can actually relax in those elegant and never comfortable clothes." Right? "Also, I don't quite understand why, but some prefer to have a charm, either for luck, either one with magical abilities." And with that, she fell silent, because she had no idea what she'd just said. |
Jade was liking the new professor, she seemed pretty cool to her, although she was a bit worried when she had unveiled the four trunks. Was there clothes in there that they all were going to have to wear? She looked up at the professor with a worried look then back down at the trunks. She nodded in agreement as Professor Elwood guessed her thoughts correctly. She did think Divination had to do exactly with fortune tellers and so on. However... "Well I guess they would wear what they want to wear, although in the muggle movies they wear loads of jewlery and crazy outfits. Talk about a major fashion statement." She said, shaking her head at the thought. She hoped they wouldn't have to wear crazy outfits. |
Derrick looked confused at the Professor. What would a fortune teller Where?Derrick raised his hand and said''Professor,They wouldn't where something elegant like a golden dress.''He said.''They would wear something like a long dress and something over it with afew bracelets and something over their head.''Well that's how they were in movies anyway. |

Blue screwed up her nose in consentration. It had been years since she had been to a Fortune Teller and she had creeped Blue out frankly. She had rolled her eyes back into her head and whispered about Blue being "gifted" or something. Blue had just run outta there without paying, looking scaaarrrrreeedd. "Well...They were really pretty skirts with bells and little fluff balls and bright colours. And shawls. They seem to wear clothes that are WAY too warm. They usually wear pretty and nice clothes." Yes. That was an acceptable answer wasn't it? Blue grinned at the teacher. Though, her answer didn't seem very Ravenclawish. |
Dylan mused his hair, looking around at everyone else who was answering. Yes, they kept mentioning clothing...He'd been to many carnivals in his day with his parents. Those women always seem to be ancient with too many clothes on and funny smells surrounding them. Totally unnecessary if anyone asked him. ...but to answer the lovely Professor's question, the Slytherin raised his hand, "Professor, I know everyone's mentioned clothing and things of that sort...but I'd like to see them wear glasses. You know, so they can see my "future" better." With how old most of them appeared to be, it was a wonder they could see anything at all, let alone his impending doom or whatever. It was a valid answer, anyway...Yes, it was. |
OOOOOH. They were talking about costumes. Indy liked dressing up. Hmmm. She mused for a few seconds before she practically threw her hand into the air. Hey. It was her first proper divination lesson, she was excited. "Well...I think they should wear pretty jewellery. Like pretty bangles. Because well they are pretty. And I like pretty things. And it would attract people to come have their fortune read." Because really. If the fortune teller was not pretty Indy would not be approaching her...or him at all. "But then.....the fortune teller might be a man, and then wearing pretty bangles would not be an option really...." Hmmm. Complications. |
