The Headmaster has re-purposed this old classroom for an entirely different use. The room is larger than it should be; the fact that Tate reduced a wall into an adjoining room is obvious by the fact that it has two doors along the same long wall. Rather than leaving an empty office or reinventing the standard dueling area, the room now serves as a training facility for those with an interest in Defense and Defense related careers: Aurors, Hit Wizards, and the International Task Force (among others).
The two windows in the room face out over an inner courtyard and let in tree-filtered light throughout the day. Beside one such window, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves have been stuffed full of countless Defense texts. The titles range from ancient tomes in spidery indecipherable scripts to glossy hardcovers featuring some of the premiere Defensive authors of the day. The long table is conducive for transcribing notes from the various books, but there are also a few deep chairs pushed together for general reading or quiet conversation. There is a sign posted on the bookshelf.

Along the opposite wall, leading from the far door halfway to the window, Tate has set up various pieces of exercise equipment, intending for those interested in pursuing a Defensive career to develop themselves physically as well as mentally. A punching bag is suspended from the ceiling in the corner, sitting beside a stand of free weights and other odds and ends, mats and exercise balls and the like. Stretching along the remainder of the space to the window is an enormous climbing wall, complete with hand and foot holds all the way up to the ceiling. There are no ropes, but the floor is generously cushioned with a charm.
Between the two windows sit a series of padded dummies, perfect for any dueling practice needed for class or just to be used in the process of learning new spells. Drag one or two out and practice. Either of the windows onto the courtyard may be opened and, weather permitting, training can extend into this open space. Try not to kill and trees or squirrels in the process.

Every day with Jim was a GOOD day. So that meant Mia and Ivan would be HAPPY now because his company was epic, just as it had been over the summer when they'd spent a weekend with him leading them into, and out of trouble.
It had been epic. No surprises there.
"Always ready to show you a thing or two, Mi." He winked at her. Did she remember? He was an epic teacher.
But it was good to see she was serious about it. Wands could be dangerous. Hopefully she wouldn't set him or anyone on fire. The dummies WERE made of wood after all.

He straightened up.
"How about the curse of the bogies?" He suggested, turning to eye Mia up. He leered at her a bit for funsies. How you doin.

And then there was the famous James Wilkes look. Mia snorted. "You are incorrigible."
Was he going to teach her anything or were they going to flirt all day?
Ivan saw the wink he gave Mia and frowned. Oh no...he was not about to flirt with her that was Ivan's job damn it. He bit his tongue though not wanting to start an argument because really she wasn't his to flirt with either.
"No this is something you both need to know but I'm all for drowning sorrows," he said with a small laugh. "Want to drown them with us Mia," he said with a smirk.
Then he was looking at her again and he turned and glared at him. Eyes in your head Wilkes. Eyes in your head. He looked back at Mia and smirked at her slightly, "I'll be happy to make him stay on task. He gave James a not so nice smirk. Anything to keep his freaking flirting to himself. It was like the boy was always flirting with everyone. It annoyed him slightly.

"You know, I should start charging I reckon. That way I'd be earning royalties or something. Nik, he bloody owes me, I reckon." Jimmy mused out loud, offering a cheerful wink at Mia. He was kidding.

As for Ivan, Jim was unbothered. He had successfully distracted him yes? Yes. Huzzah.
"Curse of the bogies it is. We'll start simple, Mia." He held his wand up. "So the point of this curse is to give your opponent a really bad cold. If you do it well enough, they'll pass out. Its pretty epic, though sometimes it can get a little messy and its contagious too. So don't get too close. There IS a counter though." But counters were boring.
So its a nice and simple crossing jab." Standard stuff. "And the incantation is Mucus ad Nauseam."

Mia glanced at Ivan and raised an eyebrow. There was something he need to tell both her and James and he needed to drown his sorrows. Well this can't be good. "Well I don't have any sorrows to drown, but I can be the designated driver." Or whatever the equivalent is in the wizarding world.
She too noticed the glares that Ivan was giving James but she just shrugged it off. Those two could sort that out between themselves.
And such an ego he had too.

"That is disgusting." What kind of spell is that? Who purposely gives someone a cold? Especially when there is a threat of catching it yourself.

Mia watched the spell fire off and hit the dummy. And while James was looking happy that she seemed to have pulled it off. She was looking at the dummy with a sympathetic expression.
Aww she had made the dummy sick.
For about two seconds.
"What?" She turned her gaze from the dummy to James and her eyes widened at what he told her to do. "I can't do that. What if I hurt it." Yeah she didn't even want to hurt a dummy. "I don't even know how to hate something."
Ivan leaned against the mirror and watched as James tried to show Mia how to cast a spell. Pulling his own wand out of his pocket he started twirling it idly in his finger as he watched Mia.
"It's a dummy, Mia, not a person. You won't hurt it," he assured her with a small smile. Hmm maybe he should be productive instead of not doing anything. Though he was enjoying watching Mia. Probably to much so...yeah....
"Why don't you teach her something not so...gross," he said making a face. Seriously.
I Can Accept Failure. But I Can't Accept Not Trying
Jordan walked in to see three upperclassmen punching a punchbag. "Looks like they're training. Now I won't look like a idiot by training by myself." Jordan muttered to himself with a straight face, trying not to make a fool of himself. Although he was only a first year, his Uncle got him ready to be fit. He ran 6 miles a day, five days a week. But he was weak on strength, mainly because of his age and the fact that he wasn't exactly the greatest eater in terms of protein.
He thought it couldn't hurt to introduce himself. Besides, he was so tall that he almost looked like he blended in with the upperclassmen. "Hi. I'm Jordan. First Year in Gryffindor. How are you?"
After introducing himself, he went over to stretch before he began to do his daily dose of running. But this time, it wasn't his choice. It was an assignment, and he loved running. So it was a win win for Jordan.
He stretched out everything from his hamstrings to his neck. He definitely felt loose. "Okay, so now I can run. Should I sprint the full 5 miles, or split it up. Warm up for 2 and half, then sprint the rest? Maybe I'll just sprint. Impress him on the first run." Him was referring to Lord Borr, Minister of Magic, his Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. He couldn't afford to screw up or be lazy in his fit journal/assignment. After all, fittness was his speciality. "Alright, let's start running. Leggo." Jordan said to himself as motivation.

Why wasn't he just running outside? Well as long as he didn't get in the way of any of Mia's spells, kid could do as he pleased.

After a brief run of a little bit over 5 miles, he went over to lift some weights. He then started to switch between a set of benching, and two minutes of punching the punchbag. "I love this class already, and we're not even learning magic." Jordan thought to himself.
Emmy had wandered and wandered through out the castle in search of a good homework spot. So, the defense training room might not be what most people would think of as an ideal study spot, but to Emmy, it was great. Too many people went to the library and common room for studying, making it too crowded and loud. There weren't too many people in here.
She pulled out her Arithmancy homework and instantly realized that she had no clue on what to do. Maybe someone could help her....? Emmy reached in to her bag and pulled out the History of Magic assignment instead.

"So, do you work out often? I was looking for a training/running buddy. For the term, at least."
Fifty... forward.... rolls... *shrug* Okay! Ariana's record was 76 in a row, going around and around the floor at her gym. At least, until the gymnastics coaches yelled at her. So, she just bent her knees and leaned forward until her head touched the ground. She kept rolling 'till back on her feet. "One..." she said under her breath.
She rolled in circles around everyone. "Forty-eight, forty-nine, fifty!" Standing up, Ariana found that she was actually dizzy, something that didn't happen very often. She tottered a bit before stumbling into someone.... happened to be James Wilkes, but of course she didn't know who he was! "Sorry, sorry!" she said, blushing as she apologized.

Once again she was in gym type clothing in some part of the school. Yep she was definitely getting used to this dressing down all the time thing. But right she needed to toughen up a little bit for this quidditch thing that she had some how gotten herself into just in case she was to fall off her broom or get hit by a bluffer or whatever it was they called the thing.
She looked around the room trying to figure out where to start when her eyes fell on Jimmy and Ivan and their friend. Oh noooooooes! Just great now he might see her looking all plain Jane and lame. Figuring it was best to head to a different side of the room to avoid being spotted she did just that and dropped her bag by a punching bag. Right, all she had to do was hit it right? Swinging with all her might Cassie punched the thing but felt a very sharp pain after which left her eyes watering.

She did? Mia blinked at James a couple of times and was about to argue with him when he went on to explain and realised that what he said made sense. And the bit about Nik made her stand up a bit straighter. And while she miss him a lot, that's not what she was thinking about. It was how Sal had spoken about him last year that caused her to narrow her eyes at the dummy.
Raising her wand she made the wand movement and then said the incantation while picturing Sal's face on the dummy. "Mucus ad Nauseam."
Yeah I'll teach you to talk about my boyfriend like that.

It was how Sal had spoken about him last year that caused her to narrow her eyes at the dummy.
Raising her wand she made the wand movement and then said the incantation while picturing Sal's face on the dummy. "Mucus ad Nauseam."

Ivan rolled his eyes and pointed his wand casually at James, "How would you know what I win or not?" It wasn't like he went around dueling everyone. "I bet I could beat you any day," he said with a smirk and looked around.
Why were they being surrounded by little people? Ugh. He watched as a kid came up, introduced himself, and left. What in the... Weird. These kids were just weird.
Shaking his head he decided to lay down and close his eyes, "Wake me when this gets interesting." Because it so wasn't right now.
Maybe he should do some sit ups. Yup that sounded like a good idea. He placed his wand beside him not wanting a bruised thigh and crossed his arms over his chest and pulled himself up, held it, and slowly lowered himself back down. He looked over as Mia cast the spell again and smiled. Progress. "Okay so maybe you're not so bad of a teacher after all James," he said as he repeated his moves over and over again.

Pshhh sure. Jim nodded. "Yeah I bet you could." His grin though, made it clear that Jimmy didn't actually think so. Ivan was good but Jim had a full year on him. Ivan would give him a severe run for his money though, he was sure. And being Jim there was always the chance that he'd just throw a match up anyway, letting his opponent win. Because honestly unless it was the real thing, what did it matter?
"Whodathunk." He agreed. "But its not me, its Mia. She's doing great." Even with the millions of tiny children wandering around. What was WITH that?

"Perfect." He commented quietly as the dummy began cough!sneeze!spluttering violently. Jimmy threw the counter at it with a flick of his own wand and grinned at Mia.
"Its like anything with magic, you just have to find the right feeling to drive it."
See Mia? You were great!
"Wanna work on another now? How about this one?" He turned his attention to the dummy and his wand flicked an e shape in the air. "Anteoculatia!" The dummy sprouted antlers and Jimmy grinned at it. Ahh just like when he'd hit Lexi with it that time. Memories.

Although Mia was rather excited that she had actually managed to successully cast a spell without setting anything on fire. She was still tempted to give the dummy a tissue and a pat on the back.
The right feeling. Got it. So basically she had to hate things.
She nodded her head at James and watched avidly as he produced a rather awesome looking set of antlers. "Do I need to channel the hate in me again?" she asked as she practiced the wand movement.
Just as she was about have a go, Mia heard what Ivan had said and she gave him a mock scowl before turning her attention to James. "Think I should give Mr Vorpatril some antlers since he is so keen on seeing something interesting."

Ivan rolled his eyes as he lifted his torso up again and looked at Mia, "Now that's not very nice. I didn't threaten to give you antlers." Hmph. How rude. "Besides," up and down. "I wasn't." Up and down. "Making fun." Up and down. "Of you." He didn't know how many sit ups he'd done but he was starting to feel it in his abs.
Sitting up fully he dropped his arms and grabbed his wand off the floor. "I was making fun of James." Which he didn't care if his friend tried to pay him back because he enjoyed messing with him. "Why are all these kids in here? They're starting to cramp my style," he said with a frown.
