| | | The Animal Collective On the other side of Professor Maya's cottage lies a large grassy area, surrounded by a 4 feet tall wooden fence. Here, approximately* 20 different animals, that can be found in a muggle farm, roam free in the enclosure. Even if the creatures are not your regular magical beings, it doesn't mean they are not special. So please, treat them with care.
Go ahead, step inside through the little doorway.
Spend some time with the goats and pigs. Why not give Nelson – the gentle Belted Galloway calf – a treat? Be careful of our small furry friends, the rabbits, and make sure you say hello to the cotton-soft sheep. Help feed the chickens and roosters and pay attention to the ducks – they are ever so cute. ☛ You will find everything you need to help take care of the animals in the little shed, right outside the enclosure. In there you'll find rakes and shovels to help keep the area clean, and also clean rags and buckets for various uses. The shed is stocked with food for the animals, Maya makes sure it's fresh – it's important you give them the right designated food, and nothing else or they can get sick. See the food list pinned onto the wall. Feeders are already placed out in the enclosure, and keep the different kinds of hay for the beasties to eat, so that's taken care of.
When you decide to say farewell for the day, make sure there's no litter lying around. Maya can probably wave her wand and trace the trash back to you. [insert evil smile here.] Plus, if the creatures accidentally eat your litter... No need to explain, right? Quote:

If you see anything you cannot handle, go and get Professor Saylen. If you do anything you didn't mean to do, and it all goes wrong, go and get Professor Saylen. If you do something by mistake and don't get Maya - she will get you.

To snowball or not to snowball. Well, there was a good reason for that, wasn't there? Kellen completed a circuit of the paddock and headed back in Sabel's direction, whapping the boy in the side of the head with the branch before frisking away again. As for Nelson, the calf noted the few pine needles that had remained in Sabel's hair and proceeded to goober-lick. |

The words were cut off by a sharp thwack to the head and attentive slobbering as a follow up.
Between the pony and the cow he had no idea what to do. Except for flail a bit, dump the marshmallows as an alternative distraction for the slobbering tongue and bolt after the pony. He had worked hard on getting that branch, he wasn't about to just give it up to a strange pony. Not that he had any idea what to do when he caught up, but that was besides the point.

Kellen looked back over his shoulder to see Nelson being hilarious, but when the calf got distracted by the marshmallows it left Sabel free to come after him. And he was moving pretty quickly, too. For a person.
He picked up his feet and lengthened his strides, matching Sabel's pace and keeping the branch juuuuuust out of reach of those fingers. Sure, Sabel was now running beside him, but he had more worry of Sabel stepping on his feet than the other way around. |

Sure, Sabel was now running beside him, but he had more worry of Sabel stepping on his feet than the other way around. It was all a matter of running, reaching, stumbling, and regaining enough balance to start the process all over again. The whole thing was so ridiculous he wasn't sure whether he should laugh or be frustrated by it all. Laughter was his first choice and also and unavailable one given how little air he had to spare. He didn't really bother questioning the logic of why he was doing all this for a pine branch he could easily find another of, but he wasn't about to give up now.
In all the old westerns he had seen, mounting a horse was made to look easy. A horse that was bareback always provided some problems. But this was a pony and it was right beside him. There was always the chance it would work.
One moment of pure, Gryffindor stupidity on the move. Instead of swiping for the branch again, he latched his hand closest to the pony's head onto a thick part of its mane that wouldn't hurt it if he pulled and threw his other arm over the creature's midriff. Then it was a heave-ho and he was lying on his belly across the back of the horse, hanging on for dear life. Definitely not John Wayne.

Kellen was getting entirely too much amusement out of watching Sabel flail at the branch, though he still had no idea why it mattered so much. They were surrounded by branches. Why was this one so special? Then again, this was the boy who'd named a school broom and tried to buy it at the end of his fourth year, so some things just had to be taken at face-value and not looked into too closely.
At the sudden grip to the mane and weight on his back, Kellen half-turned his head and eyed Sabel. Then he traded speed for bounce, performing an on-the-spot trot that popped his rider a good foot off his back before gravity thumped him back down again. |

One moment he was seeing snow rush by below him, the next that snow was speckled with stars and there was a great deal less oxygen in his lungs. Thankfully less air somehow equaled locked muscles which meant a grip that wasn't about to let go. It did however mean he was rendered immobile for a moment and unable to move from his draped position over the creature's back.
And then there was that slight flicker of intelligent realization. Was it going to start bucking?

Though he did take advantage of Sabel's occupied hands to poke the boy in the head with the branch, without having to worry about it being snatched out of his mouth. Poke poke. |

It took a few moments of deep breaths and panic over what he would do if he was bucked before he realized he was being prodded.
Of course instant reaction was to snap his hand holding the mane up and try to swat or grab at the branch. And as that was his only point of leverage and security, gravity had the next laugh and dropped him hard onto his back into the relatively packed snow. Getting trampled apparently didn't occur to him as a possibility as he remained sprawled on his back, staring at the sky. "You are a deranged pony. Deranged you hear me?" And he might have tossed a handful of powdery snow at the legs of the creature alongside the statement.

For a moment, he thought he hit his head hard; the melding of horse laughter into human more than unnerving and disturbing. And a familiar laughter too. But of course that was all in his head or some sort of oxygen deprivation.
With a groan, he rolled onto his side, preparing to get back to his feet to start the process over again. "Bloody ---STERN!?" Everything froze mid movement. Or rather it did before the instability of the awkward pause had him dropping back onto his back. And then he was scampering to his feet, half-surprised his eyes weren't left behind in the snow with how much they were bulging and staring at his friend. His friend where the pony was supposed to be. "How are you -- what are you -- where's the pony?!" A couple quick turns on the spot had him confirming it; the pony was gone. Just gone. "Where?!"
This was it. He had snapped. Gone bonkers. Flipped the lid. Rolled over twice. Cracked his noggin. Entered the land of the strange. All for a pine branch.

It was good to know Sabel's coordination was still lacking. Not all things changed in life. The rolling, flopping, and leaping wouldn't have looked out of place on a stage.
Kellen watched all of it with bemusement, and the first words out of his mouth when Sabel was finally upright and steady were, "Well, at least you didn't draw your wand on me. Then again, Neptune saw me going into my animagus form, not coming out of it. Still, sure made me nervous." |

"You nearly gave me a bloody heart attack!"

Oh yeah, definitely trying to repress a grin. |

Oh yeah, definitely trying to repress a grin. He had finally managed to get back to his feet, a frown of hesitant consideration locked on his friend as he dusted the snow off his pants, trying incredibly hard not to show his rising amusement. "A psychotic pony can't learn manners."
The last pass of his hand along the fabric of his pantleg had the grin full-fledged. "Is that what the repressed side of all those ettiquite lessons looks like?"

Go figure."
Nelson the calf had finished the marshmallows without choking on them, thank goodness, and was ambling toward Sabel, who was sporting a tres chic goober-hawk. Kellen wondered if he'd noticed. |

"Can't be dashing all the time, Stern." Shaking his head a little, he accepted the branch back from Kellen, running his fingers along the bark. Why he was checking it for marks he wasn't entirely sure.
Needless to say the investigation was short lived as his head seemed to become a grazing ground once again. Ducking and bolting forward a little ways from the slobber-monster, Sabel shot the creature a wary eye before glancing to Kellen. "Can we talk...outside the paddock? Maybe you can tell me where it is you've been hiding, besides in your....pony form."

He couldn't help but snicker at the calf's affectionate attention to Sabel's head, and led the way toward the fence, "Sure. Remember it's N.E.W.T. year, and I am a Ravenclaw. Not too much time for frisking around." |

"I didn't say no time." The only reason Kellen didn't turn his nose up at his friend was because he was climbing over the fence. Once his feet thumped down on the other side he continued, "Besides, if I wanted to I could call it practicing Transfiguration. And I see you're doing some Herbology work."
Hint hint what's the branch for hint. |

The term was almost over, and what better way to spend her free-time than with the wonderful creatures in the animal collective. Especially since she wouldn't be around many animals while staying in England.
Hopping the fence, she lightly jogged over to the nearest creature, who just happened to be Nelson the calf. Or almost cow she should say seeing how the cutie just wouldn't stop GROWING!!
Hehe. "Hiya, Nelly." She gave him loving strokes and hugs and a handful of hay. Nelson seemed to like the hay more than anything, and that was probably the reason he was tolerating Arya!hugs. Or maybe he was used to them by now? "Your gonna miss me when I'm gone, right?"

... It seemed like everyone in the castle had the same idea. The weather was nice and they all decided to be outdoors during their free time. Well, Destiny, being the follower that she is, decided that maybe she would do the same. She wandered around the grounds looking for someone she knew, but when they couldn't be found, she started on her way to a place where she belonged.
The animal collective.
Her brethren chicken were there and they always made her feel welcome. Unless she forgot to bring them food, then they liked to peck at her shoes and chase her around. But, that wouldn't happen because she came prepared!
With two handfuls of wheat, she made her way inside the enclosure and spotted an animal that didn't belong. Raccoon Girl. And she seemed to be getting awfully cozy with a cow. Snickering quite loudly, to make her presence known, she went straight to the chickens and was going to ignore the girl, but hearing her ask the COW a question, she couldn't help herself. "Cows don't talk. And if they did, his answer would be no."

"Cows don't talk. And if they did, his answer would be no." Arya wasn't really waiting for a response because she KNEW animals couldn't speak human. That, and she already knew the answer. Of course he would miss her, who wouldn't? Probably Chicken Girl. She wouldn't miss Arya and Arya certainly wouldn't be missing HER. "If cows don't talk, then how do you THINK you know what his answer would be?" She glared at the older girl as she fed Nelly more hay. "What are you doing here anyway?" HMM. Why was Chicken Girl ruining her last moments with the animals for the term? Certainly there was some place to keep the unwanted chickens.
If not, she was gonna have to have a talk with Saylen about getting one.

If not, she was gonna have to have a talk with Saylen about getting one. Usually Destiny would be freaked out by receiving a glare, but this glare was coming from Raccoon Girl and the only thing scary about her was her rabies. And there was nothing to worry about because there was no way she was going to let her teeth go anywhere near her.
Rolling her eyes at the LAME question she was asked, Destiny started to drop the wheat on the ground, waiting for the chickens to come near her. She wasn't going to them to feed them, pffft. "Because I know that no one will miss you." Not even a cow. And if it wasn't Raccoon Girl, she might have felt bad for her.
What was she doing there? Turning to face the Hufflepuff, she waved the little bit of wheat left in her hands in her direction. "I'm feeding the chickens. What are YOU doing here?"
Besides hugging a dirty, smelly cow.

Besides hugging a dirty, smelly cow. Arya kinda hoped that Destiny's eyes would roll right out of her head, but sadly her magical powers didn't work telepathically. She'd just have to work on that over the summer. Then she could torture Chicken Girl just with her MIND.
Frowning at the wheat being dropped to the ground, she watched the chickens as they started to gather around the girl. It was like a cult of some sort, and she was the leader of the chickens. "Everyone will miss me. Not even these chickens will miss YOU." Even if she was the leader of their cult.
Nelly made no fuss as Arya leaned against him. "Your doing a poor job of feeding them." Just tossing the wheat on the ground all will nilly. "It doesn't matter what I'm doing here, I was here first." She waved her hand towards the gate. "You should go back to that hole under the lake and leave the animals to me."

She waved her hand towards the gate. "You should go back to that hole under the lake and leave the animals to me." Arya had no idea what she was talking about. Destiny could name at least one person who wouldn't miss her..and it was herself. So no, Raccoon Girl, not everyone was going to miss you. HMPH. But, she was going to be the MATURE one for once and not mention that. "The chickens love me." Obviously. They were family after all! Scoffing quietly, Destiny tossed the rest of the wheat on the ground before turning to Arya, a smug look on her face. "They don't seem to be complaining about the way I feed them. Wish I could say the same thing about that cow. Looks a little peeved." Of course, though, that could be because Arya was all touching the animal and yeah, Destiny would be peeved if she was touching her, too.
Right. That whole 'I was here first so you leave' thing. How Hufflepuffish. Smirking slightly, Destiny plopped herself down on the ground by the chickens and just glaaaared at Arya. "Why don't you make me?"
That..she would like to see.
